Congratulations, Ying Zhu!

Ying Zhu and Mays Dean Jerry Strawser

Congratulations to Kelly Haws: “Keeping It All without Being Buried Alive: Understanding Product Retention Tendency” by Kelly L. Haws, Rebecca Walker Naylor, Robin A. Coulter, and William O. Bearden, has been accepted at The Journal of Consumer Psychology. Abstract: This research introduces product retention tendency, a consumer lifestyle trait characterized by an individual’s propensity to retain consumption-related possessions. We develop a parsimonious measure of product retention tendency. Next, we report on the results of two studies designed to contrast product retention tendency with clinical compulsive hoarding,

At the May Faculty Staff meeting, doctoral student Ying Zhu received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Doctoral Student at Mays Business School. Ying’s students are full of praise for her work: “She was a fabulous teacher that genuinely loves what she does. That is so hard to find. Her class was so fun. I came all the time even @8:00am.” “She was a great instructor! Very engaging, and she really cared about her students and whether or not they understood the material.” “Professor Zhu is very enthusiastic about the material, which made me want to learn it. She always had examples that were relevant to our lives.” Congratulations to Ying for a welldeserved honor and thanks for a job well done.

examining the relationships between these different types of keeping behavior as related to waste avoidance and product attachment tendencies. Three experimental studies examine the relationship between product retention tendency and the decision to retain versus relinquish different types of possessions, including used and in-need-of-repair durables, as well as perishable possessions. The Journal of Consumer Psychology is included in the Financial Times list of top 45 business journals. It joins JCR, JMR, JM, and Marketing Science as the only marketing journals on this list: http://library.mcmaster.ca/find/ft-research-rankjournals

The newlyweds will honeymoon in Antigua (south of the Virgin Islands).

Center for Retailing Studies CRS Summer Road Show Connecting with Sponsor Partners During the summer, CRS directors invest significant time renewing current company relationships and building new ones. As our partners plan their university relations strategy for the next year, we ask them what more CRS can do to serve them. It’s also a great time to provide updates on successful campus programs from the previous year and share optimistic stories of recent grads beginning their careers in Texas and beyond. This summer’s CRS Road Show began locally at Reynolds & Reynolds (R&R), the provider of

Jennifer Pratt of Reynolds and Reynolds with Dr. Charles Futrell, congratulating Katherine Eichhorn for winning an R&R Scholarship at the 2011 Awards Ceremony.

automotive retailing solutions for car dealers. R&R recently funded a marketing scholarship and is expanding its recruitment efforts to staff a nationwide professional sales program. R&R is registered for the Retailing Career Fair, and Sarah Stratta, Manager of Recruiting, eagerly

volunteered her team to participate in any classes or organization meetings that would like professional development topics discussed. Houston called next with stops for CRS Assistant Director Kelli Hollinger at Chevron HQ to participate in the Network of Executive Women’s inaugural meeting. This national organization will facilitate building connections with retailers and the consumer packaged goods industry. Kelli along with CRS Director Cheryl Bridges returned to Houston a few days later to visit Love Advertising at the invitation of Aggie grad Mike Albrecht. Love Advertising has partnered with Gallery Furniture for more than twenty-five years, and the CRS team had the privilege of chatting with Jim McIngvale, who was also at Love that day. He praised CRS to advertising firm founder Brenda Love. Blocks away, CRS toured The Container Store and Gallery Furniture’s Post Oak locations. The Container Store recently renewed its sponsorship of CRS and hired May graduate Nina Smith for a PR coordinator position at the Coppell HQ. Nina joins other marketing grads and Zale Scholars Lauren Rambo ’07 and Carol Lacey ’08. On June 8, Cheryl goes to Chicago for the Customer Relationship Management Conference where she meets leaders of current and potential sponsor companies including Acxiom, Chico’s FAS, Saks Fifth Avenue, Hallmark Cards, Gap, Inc., Lane Bryant, Sears, Macy’s, and more. Cheryl will also promote Retailing Summit to attendees. The CRS Road Show then travels to Fort Worth to visit with RadioShack and Pier I Imports, both previous sponsor companies that are renewing their university relations strategies. A few days later CRS has a major meeting with CEO Theo Killion and other top management, including Continued next page

CRS Road Show (cont.) Aggie grad Ken Brumfield, VP of Credit Services, at Zale Corporation in Irving, Texas. Zale Corporation remains a loyal sponsor but many senior executives are new to the company and may not know the many benefits of sponsorship or how Mays Business School can be a valuable academic partner. On June 27 the Road Show returns to Dallas to meet with The Powell Group to review marketing plans for the Retailing Summit. The team will touch base with the events management staff at The Ritz Carlton Hotel to finalize plans for the conference. Three days later it’s off to Corpus Christi, Texas, for the

annual planning meeting with premier sponsor H-E-B. This session confirms plans for the upcoming academic year, including H-E-B Day. July brings a connection with long time sponsor JCPenney at their corporate headquarters in Plano, Texas. JCPenney’s Group VP over jcp.com, Tom Nealon, will be a featured speaker at the CRS Retailing Summit. While the CRS Road Show is heavily booked for summer, we are grateful to be able to personally thank the many corporations who invest in Texas A&M University to help make CRS the nation’s premier retailing education institution.

News & Updates Internships

From New York City to Los Angeles, Colorado to Kansas, and in every corner of Texas, twenty-eight students began internships for credit over the past weeks. In many cases these learning experiences fulfill requirements for the Department of Marketing’s expanded certificate programs in retailing, sales and advertising. In all cases, students are investing in their personal and professional development. Unlike internships of long ago, where fetching coffee and making copies busied days, today’s students are held accountable for major client or corporate projects that teach them the ins and outs of the dynamic and competitive fields they hope to enter after graduation. The following companies hired students enrolled in MKTG 484, taught by Kelli Hollinger: Alli Sports COCAT Restoration (CO) Conoco Phillips Cummins Direct Energy Door Number 3 Elsey & Associates Insurance

First Choice Power GSD&M Hallmark Cards (KS) Jet Blue (NY) Lopez Negrete Communications Macy's Merrill Lynch NBC Nestle (CA) Schlotzsky's Seismic Exchange Sewell Shell Oil Sherwin Williams Southwestern Book Sales Target TOMS (CA) Toys R Us Union Pacific Railroad W Magazine (NYC) Walgreen Co. Many other marketing majors are interning without credit. We wish all summer 2011 interns great success.

On a Personal Note… Glenda Bessler’s son, Todd, was married recently to Anne Varisco. Both Todd and Anne are marketing graduates from Texas A&M, though they graduated four years apart and didn’t meet until several years later. Todd received his bachelor’s degree in marketing in 2002 and his master’s degree in land economics and real estate in 2005, both from TAMU. Anne received her bachelor’s degree in marketing in 2006 and her master’s degree in agribusiness in 2008, also both from TAMU. They met in the spring of 2009, began dating immediately and were engaged in October 2010. They were married on April 9, 2011. Todd works at Halliburton in Houston as a real estate manager (where he has worked for five years since receiving his master’s degree). Upon completion of her master’s degree, Anne worked at Texas A&M Health Science Center up until the wedding. Anne joined Todd in Houston where they reside after spending a wonderful eight days in Belize on their honeymoon.

MS Marketing student and TA Alison Chabannes and MS FINC student Bryce Moody were wed on May 21 at Miramont Country Club in Bryan. Glenda & Kaeli Bessler and Laurie & Karl Marshall attended the joyful event. The couple honeymooned for a week in Estes Park, Colorado (where they had a great time, and were surprised to discover the town is overrun by elk) before starting their summer internships at Pratt and Merrill Lynch, both in Houston. The bride and groom will be graduating in Dec ‘11 and Dec ‘12 respectively.
