The BIG Re-Think Interior Techniques in Interior Design Practices Master Tutor: Prof. Kireet Patel Studio Tutors: Rishav Jain and Aparajita Basu Assistants: Shail Sheth and Paramdeep Singh Dayani

Brief Outline: The intention of this studio is to develop a multitude of notions, approaches, positions and arguments with reference to interior techniques and its implications on the interior design practice. Here interior technique is defined as “A method, tool and medium that modifies, alters, conceals, exposes an interior element, thus transforming the transformable quality of the space.” The studio offers an opportunity to develop a design position in different contexts by questioning preconceived notions of interior design. It emphasizes the relationship between Interior techniques and its expression, identity and design outcome. The first four weeks are part of the common foundation program, where students from all streams work together to develop common skills and abilities. The later part of the studio is largely divided into two modules: the first module builds an argument on interior techniques through existing projects and the second module intends to develop a systematic approach to the application of the argument in three different contexts. It is an opportunity to develop an individual design position for disparate sites keeping the program constant.

Learning Outcomes: After completing this studio unit, the student will be able to: • Ability to develop a systematic argument/position/ approach on the interdependence between interior techniques and practice. • Ability to translate/represent the design argument/ position/approach through 3- dimensional and material based outcomes. • Ability to organize and evaluate the programmatic and pragmatic potential of derived design position. • Ability to build a design vocabulary and test it through the selected context (site/program).

(As per the studio proposal*)

Week 01-02 | FD PG Common Exercises

Objectory Objectory is an exercise where we were allowed to choose any object which could be easily dismantled and the anatomy of the object can be studied.

CCTV Camera Mounting Bracket A CCTV Camera mounting bracket is an important component of CCTV enclosures and fittings. The bracket can be wall or ceiling mounted. Various types of brackets are available to mount cameras in market. The Aluminum Alloy parts are powder coated with white color giving a smooth finish to bracket. Assembly 1. The 6mm thick bottom base is fixed to surface(wall or ceiling) where the camera is mounted using screws. 2. The tube bracket rod has threads which helps in fastening on bottom base. 3. The pivot base support is also threaded and gets fixed to tube bracket rod. 4. The pivot base support and pivot ball screw are placed together by fixing valve. 5.The fixing valve has plastic knob at side to tighten the pivot ball in place. 6.The camera base has threads and gets fixed on pivot ball screw and wheel helps to fix camera in place.

Stage 01

Week 03-04 | FD PG Common Exercises

Factory Magazine Stand Design The factory exercise is an attempt to design a magazine stand which can hold the domus magazine. The stand is designed considering the usability such that the person can stand in front of it and see and browse through the magazine. The legs of the stand are designed in wood and the magazine holding space is made in sheet metal and perforated sheet. The MS rod and L-Angle Section hold the legs together. The base is designed to support the legs with the help of tenon-mortise and dovetail joint. The sheet metal and perforated sheet are riveted together and fixed to legs through slit. Edge bending is done to finish the edges of the sheet metal and perforated sheet. The stand is designed within the volume of 600 X 600 X 1500mm and shaped from following kit of parts. - Wood- 75 x 40 x 1000 (1piece) - Wood- 40 x 40 x 750 (2 piece) - Metal- M.S. Sheet- 600 x 450 (18 gauge/1.2-1.5 mm thk); (1piece) - Perforated MS Sheet- 600 x 450 (18 gauge/1.2-1.5 mm thk); (1piece) - M.S. rod- 10 dia & length of 750; (2 piece) - M.S. L angle of 25 x 25 x 750 (3mm thk) (2 piece) Mechanical fasteners such as screws, bolts etc

Week 05 | FD PG Module 01

Developing the Argument Brief: The projects are studied and analyzed by identifying the different interior techniques used in designing those projects by the designer. Following types of projects are studied : - Historical era centered projects - Standardized mass customized projects - Individual identity-driven projects

“Articulating spaces within the built environment, by using interior elements in varied proportions, becomes the identity of an interior space.” To ‘articulate’ is ‘to express’. Many interior components are either integrated, downplayed or articulated to bring out the best of a space. Articulation can be using programmatic elements, structural elements or interior elements. To articulate interior spaces is to define spaces using various interior elements like furniture, walls, ceilings, openings etc. Articulation emphasizes each space independently. Articulation is the geometry of form and space. Articulation generates movement and circulation. By using one module to form interior elements in varied proportions, creates an unique spatial quality. The modules in different sizes synchronize with each other harmoniously, becoming the identity of the interior space.

Ideating Roles of an Interior Designer

Week 06-07 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 1 of Interior Designer Brief: For the idea of Developing an image, Mill Owners Association Building was selected as site. With its connect to history and understanding importance of the building, it is essential to retain the building’s existing character and design the exhibition space within. The design focuses on transforming the interior space by intervening with surfaces (floor & wall) using different elements in repetition and varied proportions, but not disrupting the existing building. Each module translates itself into an opening/ entry-way, a partition, an exhibit display unit and as a seating. The use of material was such that it merges with the site and yet defines the interior identity. Focus was to create an interior space complementing the existing built environment.

Interior Techniques : - Modularity of elements - Repetition of elements in varied proportions - Achieving visual connections - Volumetric Interplay

Week 08-10 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 2 of Interior Designer Brief: The design focuses on creating an exhibition space which is based on modularity to achieve a unique perceptional quality by using interior elements in varied proportions. These proportions are derived from the study of ‘the Modular’ by Le Corbusier. It is based on anthropometric scale of proportions. The modules continuously form different exhibition zones which guides visitors throughout the exhibition. The varied sizes of modules combine together to form a display unit or a partition/ceiling or an interactive pod. These elements come together to create a cohesive exhibition space which enables human interaction. As visitor moves from one space to another, one can experience the spaces converging and then further opening into larger spaces, which is a result of playing with spaces with same modules. The material palette is kept muted with using IPS flooring and concrete textured finish walls as surface finishes. Also, perforated sheets and MDF boards are used to make modules to create a play of solid and void. Such monochrome palette allows to highlight the DaVinci machines in the exhibit area. The displays are designed along the site periphery so as to keep maximum central space for human movement. The versatile sizes of modules create a light fixture for exhibit to an informal seating space for visitors. Such play and repetition of different modules generates rhythm and movement throughout the exhibition space further becoming identity of the space.

The Process :

Week 11-14 | FD PG Module 02

Ideating Role 3 of Interior Designer Brief: The design focuses on using interior elements with varied proportion which were previously developed and are further enlarged to become an interior space which combine and intersect with each other to articulate spaces. These spaces are partly elevated from the ground to explore volumes. The central double heighted space connects the various exhibition zones visually. The circulation becomes peripheral while connecting the spaces. As visitor moves from one space to another, one can experience the spaces converging and then opening into larger spaces. Further, the one module expands & intersects with another to form envelope which intervenes with central space. Various openings at envelope enables light to enter into the space. The skylights accentuate the central area. Permeability of light through these punctures and the vertical screens creates different shadow patterns in the interiors. The material palette is kept muted with using IPS flooring and concrete textured finish walls as surface finishes. Such monochrome palette allows to highlight the DaVinci machines in the exhibit area.
