From the
Executive Director Dear Members and Friends, We are excited about the future of the Mazamas! With your support, 2014 was our strongest year yet, with more members and more programs than ever before. We are stronger today because we are united by our common story of personal growth experiences in the mountains. Our collective story of passion for the mountains is written through the time we spend together enjoying the mountains. The sum of these experiences, and our actions to protect the mountain environment creates the legacy of the Mazamas. Today, our connection to the mountains is threatened as the forces of urbanization, high-tech society and climate change jeopardize society’s ability to access the mountain environment, thereby decreasing society’s interest in conserving the environment we hold dear. Our primary task will always be to build a strong community of people who love to play in and protect the mountains. Today, this task and the work of the Mazamas is more important than ever. With substantial support from the Mazamas Foundation, our donors, partners, and members like you, we have committed to a five-year strategic plan to invest in stewardship, youth programs, and key infrastructure projects for the future. Starting in 2014, we began to reinvent and expand our leadership development, stewardship, and youth programs. We also began planning large investments to enhance our information systems and facilities. We are positioned to thrive in the 21st century. The 2014 Mazama Annual was delivered to your mailboxes in early March, and that publication tells the stories of our people and our activities for the last year. This, our first ever Annual Report, is designed to highlight how we’re working together—our donors, partners, and members—to better serve the broader community through our mission. Because of you, we are strong. Because of you we’re excited for the future! Thanks,
Lee Davis. Executive Director Photo: Andrew Holman

we Love As Mazamas, we believe in protecting natural areas so that future mountaineers, hikers, backpackers, and rock climbers can enjoy the same experiences that we cherish. In 2014, the Mazamas made a commitment to be a leader in conservation, outdoor recreation access, and stewardship. We created a new plan to protect the mountain environment that includes the development of an organization-wide policy agenda. This effort focuses on two areas of public policy: outdoor recreation access issues such as at Madrone Wall and Beacon Rock, and conservation issues such as logging of national forests and new wilderness designations.

The lack of a unified voice speaking to decision makers at all levels of government and the outdoor recreation industry is problematic. We need to bring community leaders together to work on a more coherent conservation and outdoor recreation policy agenda.

Forging
Last year was a foundational year for kids’ programs at the Mazamas. The Mazama Families Committee began offering hikes, climbs, and classes for families to build skills together. The Youth Outreach Committee institutionalized several programs, including a Learn to Belay camp and a partnership with the Sierra Club Inspiring Connections Outdoor program, which takes urban, disadvantaged youth on hikes and snowshoe trips. Major work was also done to explore community partnerships to best reach under-served kids

in the community who wouldn’t otherwise be able to participate in mountaineering activities. During the summer of 2014 we hired our first Youth Program Development intern to raise funds and build partnerships for an Outdoor Education program at Mazama Lodge.
We can’t do it alone. A part of our strategy in the 21st century is to develop the relationships locally and nationally to better represent our values and pursue our mission.

Planning for the
future
The Mazamas is the most important organization in the Northwest for everyone who loves to play in and protect the mountains. The Mazamas works by building a community of people that take time to help others get outside and enjoy the mountains. Ours is a community with a 120-year legacy of conserving the mountain environment and ensuring access for all forms of mountaineering. 2014 was a major turning point for the Mazamas. We adopted a revised strategic plan that focuses on expanding our program capacity, enhancing operations, and developing new programs and services. The Mazamas Foundation has agreed to support the plan with a three-year capacity-building grant that allows us to start acting on the plan immediately. Ultimately, our plan will create more shared experiences outside for everyone and help build the Mazamas of the future.
