A Tale of Countryside and City

Portfolio of Zhiqiang Ma Politecnico di Milano Msc.Arch

前言 Architecture not only exists as a physical environment, but also contains social, cultural, economic and other factors. Architecture is also an important part of the entire urban and rural human settlement environment. As the two basic backgrounds for our discussion of architecture, city and country also form the basis of my portfolio, is also a showcase of my understanding and investigation about architecture.

Project 01 Five Senses House

Renovation Of Traditional Building Competition Project, 2019 Fall Team Work 2019 TEAM ZERO International Design Competition

The Five Senses House is a reconstruction plan, which contains the thinking of the meaning of home. In the current context of the urban-rural dual system in China, how to revive the declining rural residential space is neither an empty description of the prospect nor simply radical investment and construction. Located in Huanghua Ping, Yunnan province, the Five Senses House aims to evoke people's perception of hometown from the daily life of the countryside. The integration of the five kinds of perceptual space makes the Five Senses House going beyond the basic function of housing, and becoming a bond to maintain the family affection between grandparents and children. We hope that it can become a voice to think about the duality between urban and rural areas and the kinship between family members through the way of architectural design.

Background The house owner's parents once lived here, his children and grandchildren moved into the city with the process of urbanization. For grandparents, the old house is the place where they live most of their lives, and they have a deep affection for it. For young people, although they are now living in cities, childhood life in the countryside has become an important memory in their life. Therefore the old house becomes a link between generations.

Context Although Huanghua Ping village is declining, its cultural tradition is continuing. For example, torch parties will be held during significant festivals. In addition to the intangible traditional festivals, the flue-cured tobacco tower, as a physical heritage, has become a symbol of hometown to the residents. As the most popular production space in the past, they are now abandoned, but well preserved. The old house is located in the southeast of Huanghua Ping village, close to the field. It is a typical traditional residence in Yunnan. The wooden beams and the earth walls of the old buildings are well preserved.

Concept Compared with busy cities, Huanghua Ping has its peace and leisure. Therefore, we hope to transform the old house into a home that is close to nature and has a sense of belonging. How to make the owner of the old house perceive the nature and time in the house? The picture of rural life gives us a lot of inspiration, such as children playing in the fields, old people chatting in the village, experience of the family dinner in the courtyard has become the starting point of this design. We select the five-sense experience as the clue to carry out the transformation design.

Space Design The wooden walls facing the courtyard of the old house are seriously damaged, and the rest of the soil walls can be used. This design demolishes the wall facing the courtyard and implants a new load-bearing structure. The new structure creates three boundaries: the first boundary is to create visual permeability for the surrounding environment; the second boundary creates a circular corridor system; the third boundary is open to the sky to collect sunlight and create a peaceful atmosphere. These three layers of space constitute the main structure of the new house.

Perceptual Space In this design, four new volumes are placed into the free area of the old house as perceptual space. On the one hand, meet the daily needs of life. On the other hand, the intervention of perceptual space enriches the dimension of perception, which makes the concept of home in consciousness be transformed into the objective things that can be perceived. The hig h tower in the c ourtya rd maintains the feelings of the grandparents and the grandchildren. For the elderly, the tower is more like a metaphor for the tobacco tower, which is the epitome of the times. For young people, the tower is a symbol of home, like a lighthouse to guide the way home. For children, the tower is where they play and becomes part of their memory. As an extension of the village path in the building, the ring corridor metaphors the way back home.

Project 02 University as Urban Catalysts Sharing University in Xiongan

Competition Project, 2020 Spring Team Work The Architectural Design Competition of Xiongan New Area with Chinese Characteristics Under the background of high-quality development Under the background of online teaching and interdisciplinary education, this design aims to create a campus complex that adapts to diversified teaching methods and integrates community and campus in the Xiong’an new area. Facing the popularity of on-line teaching in recent years, we propose the concept of unconventional teaching space in this design, which provides sharing learning spaces. The sharing learning space breaks through the limitation of time and space in traditional teaching methods, which is conducive to students’ on-line learning. At the same time, it adapts to the trend of interdisciplinary development and meet the personalized needs of students, this design creates a learning space that can flexibly transform functions and adjust the layout. Borderless is another feature of this campus design. With the development of information technology, the future campus will provide learning space for lifelong learners, so it is essential to build a Borderless campus for community sharing. In the spatial arrangement, this design opens up green spaces and sharing learning spaces in the campus to the community through vertical zoning.

New independent learning and research space: In the face of the emergence of mixed on-line and off-line learning modes, the concept of informal teaching space is introduced to provide a public, free, and flexible research space, which breaks the time and space limitations of traditional education and facilitates on-line learning in off-line places. The independent study and research space is interspersed in classrooms, research centers, dormitory areas and other spaces available for students and classrooms on campus. It undertakes education, study and discussion, selfstudy, office work and other functions, providing an instant service for the mixed on-line and off-line education mode.

Project 03 Print Your Own City Based on Zero-Waste Sustainable Practice Of Urban Design Competition Project, 2019 Winter Team Work Urban Public Space Design Competition 2019 ( 都市のパブリックスペースデザインコンペ 2019) Our imagination of public space in the future is to print your own city based on zero-waste. And the idea comes from changes that happening in China and also the world. With the increasingly rapid development of economy, china has been facing severe traffic congestion and parking problems in urban areas. Because of excessive car using, streets are becoming wider and wider, however, less pedestrian friendly. Besides, parking lots significantly take up a great deal of public spaces, leaving no possibility for people to enjoy city lives. Fuzi Temple, a historical district in Nanjing we choose for doing the research, is a typical case which has been suffering from these problems. Fortunately, some cutting-edge technology like automatic driving cars, which makes driving convenient, safe, and space-efficient, could change the former scenario. Therefore, those public space used to be occupied by cars will return to pedestrians and residents. What could we do for those released public spaces? How to make them an ideal place for walking and communicating? The garbage recycle policy and 3d printing tech give us more options to efficiently utilize public spaces. We set up a procedure that people can classify garbage into organic and inorganic ones. Then, organic garbage is used as fertilizer and inorganic ones are reused as materials for 3d printing. And for the activities that will happen on these spaces, they can be divided as different types like daily activities (sports, play, and reading), festival activities (Temple Fairs and Lantern Show), commercial activities (planting, street market) and so on. In this way citizens can customize the public space based on their needs.

Past

Streets, Alleys and Squares were always used by different people. In the past, You could always find different activities happened at these space in the cities.

Nowadays

The streets are getting wider and wider, the alleys, small squares and some space in the community are always occupied by the cars. They lost the human scale.

Future

With the development of technology, such as self-driving, 3D printing and the method of recycling the garbage, we can return the space of the car to human and animals and create a better public life.

Street Used for Public life

Wider Street for Transportation

Bikes Start to Change the Street

Street will be return to people

We assume that with the development of Self-drving and Maas Service, it's convenient for people to go everwhere. So people will use public transportation ,the number of private cars will decrease. The street for transportation will get norrower and the left space will be retured to people

Main Road Scale The main road will get narrower ,the left space will like the linear park that can provide some activities to people, such as street gallery, sports facilities and so on.

Alleys Scale Without the parking space, the alleys can become the space that can hold many events and commercial activities, such as planting, street market .Auto-cars can pass alleys with a low speed.

Square Parking Scale There is no more needs for cars’ parking. The square can become the space for children’s playground and some public events, such as temple fair (festivals in China)

Community Parking Scale The space in the neighbourhoods are not longer occupied by the cars, they can used for sharing kitchen, public planting, readings and so on to enhance public life.

Concept By sorting the trash, organic ones can be used for planting to create better city environment. Some other waste, such as plastic, metal, glass can be applied by 3D printing to re-design the urban space. Individuals can print their own city public space by this way.

Project 04 Miniature City

Architectural Design In Post-Pandemic Era Competition Project, 2020 Autumn Team Work UIA-HYP Competiton, Autumn 2020

In 2020, one pandemic has ravaged every city globally.During this time, the high density of Chinese population and the functional distribution system of Chinese cities which relies on a great amount of urban traffic flow to resolve people’s daily needs have posed high pressure regarding the prevention of Covid 19. To prevent further spread of the pandemic, cities were forced to stagnate. Maintaining the daily lives and urban vitality of urban residents when facing unperceivable disasters becomes a necessary topic to reflect regarding the future city brought to us under the pandemic. To tackle this topic, we propose an operation mode named “ miniature city”. It disagrees with the existing mode of seperation of urban functional areas such as CBD and CLD, shifts the monotonous theme toward diversification, and compresses the coverage of overlapping urban functions. The aim is to solve residents’ production and living problems and to acheieve balance between working and living in a miniature area, the miniature area would also include natural landscape, vertical farms, garbage recyclling and drone delivery to create a green, energy saving and self-sustaining model of future city.

The modern city is consisted of central business area, central residential area, centralized office area, industrial area, technology park area, plantation area and urban greening centralized area. All these area are mixed to create the city we know today. Each area is delicated to one single function, therefore, to satisfy both the living and production needs of urban residents, the city would have a large demand for urban traffic.

By compressing the coverage of functional areas in city, people's needs can be satisfied in a smalled area. Shifting from large settlement to small set tlement, the cit y can have reduced demand for urban traf fic and motorized traffic, and satisfy the needs of green life in a small area.

The interior of a small settlement would adopt a diversity of architectural forms and functional layers to create a self-sustaining and self-circulating system to satisfy the daily living and production demands of urban residents. The small settlements from each "miniature city" links together to form the urban system of future cities.

Sense of place and locality

The miniature city applies the usage of blend mode. Through the layering of different architectural forms and functions, the lot can satisfy the basic needs of residence, office and production in a small area. At the same time, through the implementation of green roofs, one can satisfy the desire of embracing the nature of people who are under constant pressure in a high-density urban environment. In the bottom layer, cultural media center is implemented to satisfy people's needs to pursue culture and trending media. Besides the high-rises and large-scale building forms, we have extracted forms of slanted roof from Yang Liuqing Town to apply them in buildings of the small scale commercial streets. These commercial areas would satisfy people's needs for shopping, and at the same time to create a sense of place to avoid the feeling of monotonoueness in a rapidly developed modern city. Lastly the creation of green ecology within the project responds to the call of a healthy and safe future city.

Project 05 'Urban Oasis'

Reconstruction Of Mosul Mosque

Thematic Studio Project, 2020 Autumn Team Work Prof.Chizzoniti Domenico Giuseppe

The project is about “Reconstruction of Mosul”. Mosul is the second largest city in Iraq. It was once attacked by the extreme terrorist organization — ISIS. Now it is in ruins and is in urgent need of reconstruction. The topic we chose is the reconstruction of the most important building — AL Nouri mosque in Mosul. The project starts from organization of space, atmosphere, and materials to reshape “spiritual oasis”, allowing people to regain hope after the war.

The Five Sites Of Reconstruction

Mosque After War Mosque was the worst damaged in the terrorist attack. Most of the site was in ruins, except for the remnant dome, the base of the tower and a small pavilion. The original site is composed of a mosque, courtyard and tower, and the surroundings are separated by walls. The tower is a symbol of the spiritual culture of the city of Mousl, and it is also an important part of the mosque, but it was severely destroyed in the attack. Therefore, the design needs to respond to the existing elements in the site and rebuild the mosque.

The design is based on the elements preserved in the site-domes, towers, pavilions, and the layout of the space is determined based on the orthogonal axis of the mosque. According to the characteristics of the mosque, the large central courtyard is retained, and the rest of the space is organized through the traffic space surrounding the courtyard. Taking the prayer space of the mosque as the central axis, a series of spiritual spaces are arranged along the line to form a sequential spatial experience. A visitor flow line is set around the tower. Since the old tower has been destroyed, it is envisaged to set a new tower on the other side to echo it, forming the commanding height of the city.

Project 06 Intergenerational Residence

Intergenerational Dialogues in the Milanese Peripheries Architectural Studio Project, 2020 Spring Team Work Prof.Croset Pierre-Alain

Aging is a serious problem facing Italy. Therefore, this topic focuses on the physical and psychological health of the elderly and provides them with a good living and living environment. The project site is located on the edge of the city of Milan, and the surrounding area is in urgent need of renewal. The theme of the design is to create a place to promote intergenerational communication. Therefore, the fixed topics are divided into themes such as school, library, senior apartment, gymnasium, etc. It is required to create a vertical space with mixed functions with the theme of “elderly apartment +”, so that the elderly and the younger generation can meet here. Another theme of the design is to create a mixed-structure building, and structural innovation is also one of the factors that the project needs to consider.

Other Work Sun Garden · Rain Pavilion Site Specific Micro Building

Competition Project, 2021 Spring Team Work Stream Garden Micro Building Competiton, 2021

The two pavilions are located in plot A of Garden Expo in Nanjing. They are located on the shore and the island respectively, forming a relationship to look at each other. The “garden” with the island and the canal as the core is enclosed, forming the spatial concept of “garden in garden”, providing visitors with a place for rest . The Garden of Sunshine is limited by walls . The roof is suspended above the walls with steel columns, and the walls define the space under the eaves and the patio. For the material, translucent polycarbonate sheeting is selected. On sunny days, the shadow of trees falls on the roof, making people feel like being shaded by the shadow. The pattern formed by the shadow of trees also enriches the experience of the pavilion. The patio is also flooded with sunlight and tree shadows, making it more cohesive. The Pavilion of Rain is surrounded by many trees, so it can hardly get enough sunshine, but it can be a quiet place. The structure is supported by steel columns and cables, with views open to the island and shore. For the material, the steel plate is used as the roof. In rainy days, the rain drops will make a sound by colliding with the steel plate, and then pour down the roof into the canal, forming rain curtain and rain sound. Two Pavilions with one light and one dark material, will form two kinds of experience and the duality .

Master Plan

The competition site is on both sides of the canal on the west side of the Sheep Lawn in the Binjiang Green Expo Park in Nanjing. It is planned to upgrade a section along the stream to a canal garden in the future. There is a landscape bridge and a small island in the current volume, and landscape sketches are required on the small island

Other Work Inside · Outside Reuse Urban Surplus Space

Competition Project, 2021 Spring Team Work Q CITY Tangshan Competiton, 2021

The site is adjacent to the Tangshan Research Institute of Beijing Jiaotong University and is surrounded by residential communities. The design is based on the properties of the plot, and the main service targets are school students and the elderly in the community. It is hoped that these two different groups of people can meet here to create intergenerational communication. The design concept of “onehalf” was also proposed. “One-half” is not only one-half in space, but also one-half in time. In the division of space, the concept of “half” is proposed from both the plane and the section. In space, we put in a series of functional plugins that serve both the elderly and students, and divide them from the plane and the section. In terms of time, the boundary of the playground is opened and closed by movable and flexible devices, and the elderly and students can use each other’s space together. At the same time, when the boundary is opened, the entire playground and the designed space can be shared by the entire city and become a city stage.

The site is located in Tangshan. It is adjacent to BJTU in the north, Main Road in the south, and a series of old residential houses built in the 1980s are scattered around. With the relocation of the NCUST and the deindustrial transformation, the vitality of the plot has declined. We want to create a new type of space that transforms vertical constraints into horizontal constraints. The horizontal plane contains public service facilities and soft boundaries, and a new public space is created on the horizontal plane.

1. The site is located between the community and the University, and the boundary is defined by the fence. There is a bus stop along the road, and there are many trees.

2. we planned to break the isolation between the University and the community, and put in five convenient facilities for both college students and residents. The boundary between U ni ve r s i t y a n d c o m m u ni t y i s d e f i n e d by variable wall, which becomes a more flexible boundary.

3. Put in a new horizontal floor to change the space along the street from a vertical wall to a horizontal board, and the horizontal board becomes a new public space.

When the students no longer use the ping-pong kiosk, the elderly can use this place to exercise.

People can also look at the surrounding scenery from the observation tower on the platform.

We consider different behaviors and activities from different time periods and different users as a starting point. Since the school stadium will be open to citizens in the afternoon, how to use this site more flexibly has become the focus of the design. Since there are mostly elderly people around the site, the main service groups for the design are the elderly and students. The work, rest and living habits of old people need to be considered. They prefer to gather in places with a lot of people. When they are fine, they like to chat together and read the newspaper. The students are usually more lively, they need more flexible space, and combined with the attributes of the stadium, we have set up some related functions and facilities for sports. And this site also provides some resting space for some people passing by. Therefore, different groups of people gather here to produce intergenerational exchanges.

After dinner, the elderly can go up to the roof terrace and dance the square dance.

In the evening, the surrounding residents can come to the city stage here and listen to a piece of folk music.

Other Work Reshaping Distance

Residential Design In Post-Pandemic Era Competition Project, 2020 Autumn Team Work HASEKO Residential Design Competiton, 2020

Due to the influence of the new coronavirus, questions about the functionalistic way of working and living due to modernization have become apparent. Until now, the places of life have been organized by function, efficiency has been pursued, and the frameworks and place names created there have been adapted to the functions such as long commuting, offices, living rooms, and stores. maybe. Due to the corona sickness, the boundary between the house and the office disappears when working from home using IoT, and the place where the house just returns from work becomes a place to live all the time, while face-toface communication with others. The importance of is also shared. In other words, what each person needs for a house has come to be asked. In the present age, which can be said to be a transitional period of living, what kind of proposal would you like to make a big step forward in the way apartments should be? The site is highly convenient in Osaka city, and is an area between the city center and the suburbs. Functions and historical icons such as houses, offices, commerce, schools, parks, and shrines are mixed in the surrounding area. Imagine an apartment house with 50 units (site area 1,000 m2, floor area ratio 200%).

Physical distance and psychological distance

Reshaping Distance

Physical Distance

Encounter

Highly Private

Highly Public

The privacy and public nature of apartments is achieved through the physical distances. The walls create a physical distance that can actually isolate the occupants who are very close to the room. It is possible to create an unexpected meeting place accordingly, but if the physical distance is shortened, the psychological distance cannot be shortened without interaction between people.Apartment also have a psychological distance, and the interaction between vision and other senses allows people to communicate with each other even at a physical distance. We feel each other’s existence and recognize that we live together.

Extremely Public

A typical nLDK type creates privacy by providing an isolated space, and the corridor as transportation space creates a meeting place. The nLDK type spatial composition can be understood as the family’s relatively multifunctional and relatively public LDK parts and relatively private bedrooms and other parts, as well as the most popular outer corridors.

Sensory interaction

The difference between psychological and physical distances causes different activities. It can be summarized as four relationships: encounter, isolation, assembly, sensory interaction.

The relatively public part and the relatively private part in the nLDK system were separated and arranged to obtain a symmetric part to meet flexibility. Both can be linked through a corridor and become a perceptual space as a relatively public part. The outer corridor is relatively connected to the public part, making it a gathering space. And the corridor guarantees the privacy of space.

Street

Arrangement of sensory space The perceptual space provides visual communication and at the same time acts as a transition between the basic and expanded functional areas of the house.

Arrangement of meeting space The stairs will become a three-dimensional street, connecting residents and becoming a gathering place.

Flexibility of Houses W ith the separ ation of residential areas and residential expansion areas, housing will become more flexible. First, the entrances to each of the two areas can operate independently. Using an extended area as an of fice area allows families to come to such an area undisturbed. The extended area during the COVID-19 period can reduce the chances of people meeting. There is a large buffer zone between the public corridor and the entrance area, which can usually be used as an extension of your residence, shared with your neighbors, and at the same time you can see the corridor where people gather.During the COVID-19 period, each house in the buffer zone occupies the buffer zone and can be used as a balcony. The perceptual space in the house acts as a buffer between the two parts, while at the same time having a public attribute. You can see each other regardless of the duration of COVID-19 or later times. Such a system realizes different spaces at different physical and psychological distances.

Other Work Horizon Stitching

Landscape Architecture Design In Forest Competition Project, 2019 Autumn Team Work Young Architects Competiton, 2019

“In nature we never see anything isolated, but everything in connection with something else which is before it, beside it, under it and over it.” On the site, horizontally forest and wild lawn are mixed together and also seperate clearly, vertically the mountain, forest, and lawn encounter at the horizon — which is the most obvious composition in most of the pictures on site. It is common that people always tend to stay at the edge of the space (the boundary of forest horizontally and the horizon vertically), rather than the center. The boundary of the forest, as the primary of this outside space, attracts the view, sunshine shadow and possibility of activities. This strip is set around the edge to stitch the boundary — on the one hand, it helps to connect the outside space to be more accessible, on the other hand, it emphasizes this edge, and tries to show people the possibility of the successful places which requires some degree of consistency, of clear organization, so that people have a frame of reference for the other, equally important aspect:surprise. The strip also flies through the site to link all the natural elements like forest, sky, lawn, and mountain.

The Buffer Zone MIAW Workshop, 2020 Winter Team Work Prof. Roberto Cavallo (TU Delft)

The MIAW 2021 fouces on the event of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games and urban regeneration of Milano Porta Romana rail yard. The proposal aims to connect the dense city and the suburban agricultural area as the buffer zone to create fisically-responsible, socially-sustainable and environmentally-friendly places for the Olympic and future use.

Rural Revitalization of Huangnan Village Final Thesis, 2021 Summer Team Work Prof.Croset Pierre-Alain

The site is located in Huangnan Village, Songyang County. In the design, we take the village and the villagers as the main body, combine the characteristics of the village, local materials and construction technology, through the implantation of public buildings, renew the inheritance of the context of the village, and remodel the culture, history and identity of the village.
