Scanbox scores magnificent seven selection

Scandinavian distributor Scanbox has set a company record by acquiring seven films in Official Selection.

The titles include Competition films The Homesman, Saint Laurent, The Search and The Captive, as well as opening film Grace Of Monaco.

Scanbox has also secured Un Certain Regard titles Lost River and The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby.

These acquisitions reflect a restructured Scanbox. After the departure of former CEO Mikael Modig, the firm’s new management team includes Kim Beich Christensen as head of acquisitions and general operations; Henrik Rasmussen leading the home entertainment business; and Thor Sigurjonsson as head of production.

Scanbox has built up from a home entertainment-focused company that concentrated on genre fare to have a more diverse slate with top arthouse titles. Joni Sighvatsson, chairman of Scanbox, told Screen: “We have a much more diversified slate but also we’re not abandoning our genre roots.”

Forthcoming genre releases will include A Walk Among The Tombstones and Taken 3.

“Last year was the best year in the history of the company,” Sighvatsson noted, pointing to releases such as The Butler and Blue Jasmine.

Backers lust for Iggy Pop doc from Jarmusch

Jim Jarmusch’s documentary on The Stooges has found new backing from Fernando Sulichin’s New Element Global and a sales home in UK outfit Independent, which is launching the project in Cannes.

ICM Partners, which represents Jarmusch, will handle North American rights. Carter Logan (Only Lovers Left Alive, The Limits Of Control) produces.

The long-term passion project for the Only Lovers Left Alive director is already in production. It features interviews with The Stooges frontman Iggy Pop. The currently untitled film will present the context of the iconic band’s emergence musically and culturally, and relate their adven-

tures and misadventures. Additional contributors are being kept under wraps.

Financier Sulichin, who recently produced Oliver Stone’s Untold History Of The United States, has also executive produced features including Spring Breakers and The Killer Inside Me. Jarmusch said: “I like to think of

our film as both an unconventional portrait of, as well as an open love letter to, one of the greatest and most primal rock bands of all time.

We’re very proud to work with Independent, ICM and New Element on this project.”

Independent’s Andrew Orr said: “It is no coincidence that Kurt Cobain, Jack White and the Sex Pistols all referenced The Stooges as a cornerstone influence. The combination of one of the greatest independent film-makers and one of the most explosive, dangerous bands of all time is going to be a real treat.”

Independent’s Cannes slate includes comedies What We Did On Our Holiday and Bill, as well as Carol Morley drama The Falling and animation A Bollywoof Tale.

Korea’s CJ Entertainment has scored an early deal on Un Certain Regard title A Girl At My Door, which has gone to French distributor Epicentre. Starring Bae Doo-na (Cloud Atlas), July Jung’s directorial debut is produced by Lee Changdong (Poetry). Produced by Lee’s Pine House Film and Now Films, it also stars Kim Sae-ron and Song Sae-byuk. The Weinstein Company, Focus Features, Open Road and A24 were among a small pack of buyers understood to be chasing US rights to Jake Gyllenhaal thriller Nightcrawler on Friday evening.

According to sources, Fox Searchlight was also circling. Bids were in the $4m region for Bold Films’ story of a man who discovers the nocturnal world of Los Angeles freelance crime journalism. CAA and WME Global jointly represent US rights and Sierra/Affinity handles international sales.

Main Street Films has struck a US deal for The Turning with LevelK. The Australian box-office hit, an adaptation of Tim Winton’s book, includes segments by directors such as Mia Wasikowska, David Wenham and Justin Kurzel. The cast includes Cate Blanchett and Rose Byrne.

Bridges span to Indie Sales Indie Sales has picked up international sales rights to omnibus Cannes title Bridges Of Sarajevo.

The film marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and is showing in Special Screenings here. The collection of short films from 13 European directors, including Jean-Luc Godard and Sergei Loznitsa, is themed around Sarajevo.

Ezekiel Film Productions, a new film finance body set up by Lebanese financier Antoun Sehnaoui in association with French actress and producer Julie Gayet, has boarded compatriot film-maker Ziad Doueiri’s next film, L’Insulte.

Doueiri’s latest film after his award-winning The Attack is leadproduced by Jean Bréhat and

Rachid Bouchareb’s Paris-based 3B Productions.

Well Go USA has snapped up North America and a slew of other territories on Pegasus Motion Pictures’ Ip Man 3, an ambitious 3D instalment in the biopic action franchise starring Donnie Yen. Well Go has also bought France, Germany, UK, Benelux, Nordic territories and Latin America on the $36m film, which

reunites Yen with producer Raymond Wong, director Wilson Yip and writer Edmond Wong. Production is scheduled to start in early 2015.

“This film focuses on the master-student relationship between Ip Man and Bruce Lee,” said Edmond Wong. “It also portrays Ip Man at a stage when he is searching for the real meaning in life.”

Reel Suspects enjoys its genre Angst

French genre specialist Reel Suspects has been racking up sales of titles on its slate.

It has sold horror trilogy German Angst to Alamode Film/ Pierrot Le Fou for German-speaking Europe.

The portmanteau film combines the work of three horror directors: Jörg Buttgereit (Nekromantik), Andreas Marschall (Tears Of Kali) and Michal Kosakowski (Zero Killed).

Craig Goodwill’s Patch Town, which premiered at Palm Springs this year, has been picked up by Kino Lorber for the US and Raven Banner for Canada.

The award-winning comedic fairytale revolves around an abandoned child who dreams of being reunited with his adopted mother after he is left in a cabbage patch.

Silvio Nacucchi’s Beyond Love, which was launched at Berlin, has been sold to Optimale for France and Ariztical for the US.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) has acquired UK rights to horror film The Last Showing from The Philm Company and SC Films.

Written and directed by Phil Hawkins, the plot centres on a projectionist who traps a young couple inside a cinema and creates his own horror film using CCTV cameras.

It stars horror icon Robert Englund, alongside Game Of Thrones’ Finn Jones, Emily Berrington (24: Live Another Day), Keith Allen and former Screen International Star of Tomorrow Malachi Kirby. The deal was announced by Richard Benson, SPHE UK marketing director.

Golden Network ties up 3D puppet adventure Golden Network Asia has picked up international rights to Taiwanese 3D puppet animation The Arti: The Adventure Begins, which Warner Bros will release in Taiwan next Chinese New Year.

UK sales outfit Kaleidoscope has boarded international rights to US horror Antibirth, set to star Chloe Sevigny and Orange Is The New Black actress Natasha Lyonne.

In pre-production and set for a shoot this August, the film centres on a stoner living in a barren desert community who appears to fall pregnant as rumours of aliens begin to spread.

Executive producer on the horror title is Jeff Rice (Lone Survivor, End Of Watch).

The deal was signed by Kaleidoscope director of international sales and acquisitions Caroline Stern with Traverse Media’s Cole Payne, who is also producing.

Payne said: “Writer and director Danny Perez is a special filmmaker the industry should watch. His vision for the film truly reminds me of Cronenberg’s The Fly.”

Chinese puppet theatre originated in south China, but moved to Taiwan where the puppets became bigger and costumes and sets more elaborate.

The puppets are more than a metre tall and are manipulated from below by skilled puppet masters.

Director Hyett is known for his VFX work on The Woman In Black and The Descent.

Producers are Ed King and Martin Gentles for Starchild Productions. Lee Brazier (AV Pictures) is executive producer.

Morgan Freeman will star in The Mark Gordon Company and Revelations Entertainment’s Beautiful Jim Key, which Cargo Entertainment is shopping in Cannes.

Cargo is financing with Two Ton Films. CAA, which represents Revelations and Freeman, packaged the project and represents US rights with The Gersh Agency.

Beautiful Jim Key is based on the true story of showman Dr William Key, who overcame racism and turned his trained horse into a national sensation.

Screenwriter Robert Rodat makes his directorial debut and worked with Mark Gordon on The Patriot and Saving Private Ryan.

Production starts in early 2015.

Gordon produces with Revelations’ Lori McCreary, Cargo’s Marina Grasic and Rogers Hartmann. Two Ton’s Clay Pecorin and Russell Geyser and Michele Wolkoff are executive producers.

HitchcockTruffaut doc rears its head A documentary based around the famous interviews between filmmakers Alfred Hitchcock and Francois Truffaut is in the works.

Cohen Media Group, Artline Films and ARTE are backing the French-US feature doc, which will be directed by Kent Jones and launches today in a reception at the Unifrance Pavilion.

“It is going to be a film about film-making,” Jones told Screen.

“It is about the practice of filmmaking as a translation of emotion into images.”

The film will include footage from the 27 hours of interviews between Hitchcock and Truffaut, as well as new interviews with directors such as Martin Scorsese and Arnaud Desplechin, who will reflect on themes raised by the late film-makers.

Iron Sky sequel in release shift

Iron Sky producer Tero Kaukomaa has revealed further details of the film’s upcoming sequel, including plans for a day-and-date release.

Iron Sky: The Coming Race is the $10m sequel to the Nazis-onthe-moon genre movie. Director Timo Vuorensola will return as well as original cast members Udo Kier, Julia Dietze and Stephanie Paul.

Speaking to Screen, Kaukomaa conceded the distribution strategy for Iron Sky’s release in 2012 was flawed and that a failure to co-ordinate its international rollout made the film vulnerable to piracy.

The aim is to ensure the release of the sequel is day-and-date, and distributors will be obliged to commit to the release schedule that the producers devise.

Indomina back with Pantelion

Indomina Media International and Pantelion Films have teamed for the second time after 2012’s Filly Brown to co-finance and distribute internationally a group of predominantly Spanish-language films.

The multi-title deal provides for Indomina’s Dominican-based production branch to finance up to four films a year with wide commercial appeal and guaranteed international distribution.

Pantelion, the joint venture between Lionsgate and Grupo Televisa, recently launched an international sales division, and will acquire worldwide distribution rights to all the films. It will distribute in the US while Videocine, Televisa’s film arm, will handle Mexico.

Financing comes through Indo­ mina’s new fund designed to develop and produce Dominican films targeted at international audiences. The fund’s advisory board includes Dominican director-producer Juan Basanta and WME Global’s Alexis Garcia.

Two projects in production are Complices, about a philanderer who takes his heartbroken nephew on a sexy beach vacation; and the remake of Dominican romcom Quien Manda?, about a womaniser who meets his match. Zoe and Cicely Saldana produce through Cinestar Productions and Marco Films.

Buyers are descending on A Symphony Of Summits — The Alps From Above, being sold in Cannes

by Autlook.

Following box-office success in Germany and Austria, Autlook has closed multiple deals ahead of this weekend’s Marché screening with Wild Bunch (Benelux), New Select (Japan) and KinoSmith (Canada).

The film is made up of razorsharp aerial close-ups and panoramic images shot throughout the Alps. It is directed by Peter Bardehle and Sebastian Lindemann, and produced by Andrea Mokosch for Vidicom.

Indonesian film festival and market to launch

Indonesia is launching a film festival and market, Equator Film Expo (EFX), which aims to support the burgeoning local film industry and promote the country as a shooting destination.

The first edition is scheduled to take place March 27-30, 2015. It will feature an international film festival; a film market focusing on co-productions; a locations showcase and a technology trade show; along with a conference series and networking events.

EFX, which has private backing for its first edition, will also feature a competition section for films from emerging nations.

“Indonesia has the fourth-largest population in the world but has very little soft power, so our goal is to build up this industry and give Indonesia a voice,” said Guillaume Catala, who co-founded the event with Tedy Tricahyono.

Park takes Petroleum Park Entertainment, the Londonbased sales and distribution company, has acquired international sales rights to the coming-of-age road-trip title Petroleum Spirit. Written and directed by Rob Sanders, the film blends fantasy and reality as told from the twisted world view of a teenager, who hits the road in search of his father.

Currently shooting in the UK, it stars Alexandra Weaver, Dave Legeno, Ian Virgo and Jared ElisTomas. Evangelo Kioussis is producing. Simon Alexander is executive producer.

Media Asia closes raft of deals

Hong Kong’s Media Asia has sold Johnnie To’s romantic comedy Don’t Go Breaking My Heart 2 to Magnum Films for North America.

Magnum also picked up two other Media Asia titles as part of a package — To’s Romancing In Thin Air and Gary Mak’s SDU: Sex Duties Unit.

Media Asia has also sold animated feature Monkey King Reloaded to Turkey’s Saran Media and Burma’s Golden Yellow Tree, which also acquired action thriller Helios.

Media Asia has also received several offers from Korea for Helios, which stars a pan-Asian cast including Jacky Cheung, Nick Cheung and Korea’s Ji Jin-hee and

Day of the Dryads Norway’s Producer on the Move Teréz Hollo-Klausen has confirmed that feature Dryads (working title), inspired by the 1990s cult Norwegian band, will shoot next month.

The film will star True Blood’s Allan Hyde and rising actress Alba August, daughter of filmmakers Bille and Pernilla August.

Dryads marks director Sten Hellevig’s feature debut, who co-scripted with US writer Randall Jahnson, whose credits include Oliver Stone’s The Doors.

It is being produced through Hollo-Klausen’s Anna Kron Film and Hellevig’s The King Of Popcorn. The project has been put together as a Norway-US co-production, and is being made with the support of the original Dryads. Set in the present day, it will feature original music.

Hollo-Klausen is looking to appoint a sales agent.

Making the cut Un Certain Regard entry Snow In Paradise, Andrew Hulme’s directorial debut, is a UK film made without any support from UK broadcasters or public funders.

“None of them were interested, if they even took a meeting,” the film-maker notes of the indifference with which the project was treated on home ground.

Hulme and his producer Christine Alderson of Ipso Facto turned to European backers instead, presenting Snow In Paradise in Rotterdam’s co-production market, CineMart, in 2012.

The pair eventually attracted a prestigious German sales agent — The Match Factory — a French distributor — Wild Side — a German partner in Millbrook Pictures and support from financiers Backup Media. The team also launched a Kickstarter campaign.

The New York groove Abel Ferrara’s Welcome To New York may not be in Official Selection — rumours suggest this is due to political pressure on the festival — but it will premiere here in Cannes today.

After months of controversy the picture, starring Gérard Depardieu in a role inspired by IMF chief Dominique StraussKahn, will premiere at the Star theatre 1 and 2.

The film is loosely inspired by the experiences of its co-writer Martin Askew. It is about Dave (played by newcomer Frederick Schmidt), a young petty criminal from London’s East End who turns to Islam after the violent death of his best friend. Becoming a Muslim helps him to control and channel his anger.

Hulme comes to directing having established himself as one of the UK’s top film editors. His credits include Control, The Girl, Red Riding 1974, The American and Lucky Number Slevin.

“I guess I’ve seen a lot of dirty washing,” Hulme jokes of how his experience as an editor prepared him for directing. “I’ve seen a lot of mistakes made and have been thinking about what I would do in that situation. I’ve also seen, and helped to make, successful films.”

Hulme cites working on Anton Corbijn’s feature directorial debut Control as an inspirational experience. “You’ve got a very raw, fresh talent in Sam Riley and there’s something about this that clicked in my mind. It’s an interesting route to take, casting someone who has never done it before.”

From his experience editing Red Riding 1974, featuring a young Andrew Garfield, Hulme also felt he had an instinct for faces that audiences like to watch.

“I’ve watched a lot of rushes when I can tell I want to watch somebody for a long time.”

Hulme saw Schmidt as an actor in a similar mould to Garfield.

The newcomer certainly won the lead role in Snow In Paradise in unlikely circumstances. By chance, Schmidt — then working as an art technician — was spotted having a cigarette on the street in Hoxton, London. He had just had an argument with his boss and was in a terrible mood — but agreed to come along for the open audition. Hulme immediately realised “he had the right face, the right attitude” and the emotional range needed for the part.

After winning the role, and before beginning production, Schmidt also landed a small part in David Mackenzie’s prison drama Starred Up. “We were quite pleased he went away on location for four weeks, just to get an idea of what a film set is like.”

Snow In Paradise premieres in Un Certain Regard on Wednesday.

Q&A SEBASTIANO RISO Italian director Sebastiano Riso’s debut feature Darker Than Midnight is about a gay teen living on the streets of the Sicilian city of Catania to escape a violent father who disapproves of his feminine looks. It premieres in Critics’ Week.

The film is based on the true story of Davide Cordova, a performer and co-founder of the legendary Roman nightclub Muccassassina. How did the collaboration come about?

We’re both Sicilians living in Rome. We met on a Rome-Sicily flight. He told me his story and it was so powerful — it had all the elements of a film. When writing the script, me, Stefano Grasso and Andrea Cedrola, we took out a lot of what happened because it was so extreme that people would have thought it was made up.

Why did you focus only on Davide’s teenage years?

I’m obsessed with adolescence — perhaps due to my father’s influence as a psychiatrist.

Although the story is particular to Davide, there’s also something very universal about his tale.

When you’re a teenager you’re forming your personality, your sexuality and your interests. It’s a fascinating stage. In fact among my favourite films are Germany Year Zero and The 400 Blows.

The other important aspect of the film is Davide’s sexuality. He is very, very feminine. It was a way to discuss something not discussed much in Italy. Today to be gay in Italy is a problem. Every week,

there are young boys who commit suicide because not conforming is a problem. Italy does not have an anti-homophobia law.

Davide Capone, the young actor who plays Cordova, is amazing to look at. How was he found?

We looked at 9,000 boys over two years — found on beaches, in schools, through casting calls… anywhere and everywhere. We just couldn’t find the right boy but I knew that 80% of the film’s success would rest on the performance of the main actor. I told the producer I was going to Palermo, and the second day I was there I found him in a school. He didn’t want to act. He’s into music.

He loves Nina Simone and did this amazing rendition of I Put A Spell On You. He’s a true artist.

How did veteran producer Claudio Saraceni get on board?

He loved the script. He’s better known for comedies but was prepared to get involved in a film like this. We needed someone brave like him to help make it.

The Captive Reviewed by Jonathan Romney Atom Egoyan makes light work of some intensely dark themes in The Captive, a complex and teasing drama that mixes paedophiles, abduction, video surveillance, enigmatic femmes fatales and Mozart’s The Magic Flute. It is a sometimes perplexing mix, but perplexity is par for the course with the Canadian auteur, whose best work has always been about playing games with perceptions and preconceptions.

This quasi-thriller, narratively arranged in the mosaic style of the director’s early pieces such as Exotica and The Adjuster, is his most wholeheartedly Egoyanesque work in some time, following a run of films, most recently Devil’s Knot, in which there was not always a comfortable fit between the material and the director’s sensibility.

Here, however, Egoyan is at ease both with the themes and with their handling, and is for the first time having fun with the language of the mainstream thriller. Some viewers may object on grounds of taste to such ludic — and to a degree, coolly detached — entertainment being drawn from such sombre subject matter.

But then well-respected crime novelists cross that border all the time and The Captive manages to unsettle and to convey emotional tremors even while playing its games. The film’s elegance — both narrative and stylistic — and a strong cast including less familiar names Kevin Durand (suavely creepy) and up-and-comer Alexia Fast should make this Egoyan’s most

widely appreciated film for some time, among critics and audiences alike.

The film’s first third offers us a fragmented lead-in, with Egoyan and co-writer David Fraser making it difficult to tell how the timeframes connect and how the characters relate to each other — in one scene two people meet but one remains an off-screen voice until much later. Piecing together the story, we learn that it concerns teenager Cassandra (Fast), kidnapped as a child by Mika (Durand), who has long kept her locked in a room in his house.

Thanks to an elaborate system of surveillance cameras he has rigged up, Cassandra is able to see her mother Tina (Enos) at work as a hotel cleaner. The film loops back to show us the moment of her abduction years before, when she was snatched away under the nose of her father Matthew (Reynolds).

Matthew alerts the police, but the investigators, headed by officer Nicole Dunlop (Dawson, nervy and authoritative) do not quite believe his story — especially in the case of Jeffrey Cornwall (Speedman), a bullish new recruit to Dunlop’s anti-paedophile task force. Later in the timeline — but early in the film — it transpires Dunlop herself has gone missing. In other words, do not expect to sit back and relax, because Egoyan expects us to do our share of the detective work.

There has been no shortage of anxiety-inducing child-abduction dramas recently — from Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners to the Austrian drama Michael — and viewers may balk at a degree of over-familiarity in the premise. But as

the plot thickens and, indeed, turns somewhat baroque, it is up to us to decide whether or not we are willing to go all the way into the film’s labyrinth, strewn with real and symbolic clues that often baffle the characters themselves.

Having set up a more or less realistic premise, the narrative moves into more genre-based territory, with Matthew playing manhunter, and there is even something novel for an Egoyan movie — an honest-to-God car chase. Add a mysterious bewigged woman, a druggeddrink plot device and Niagara Falls as an imposing background, and the result is a richly strange confection.

The film abounds with resonances from Egoyan’s previous work, notably in its fascination with the fetishistic dimensions of video and internet technology, and with families torn apart and identities transformed by traumatic incident. Adding to this echo effect, long-term Egoyan players Arsinée Khanjian and Bruce Greenwood turn up in supporting roles, while the hard core of the director’s regular collaborators (cinematographer Paul Sarossy and editor Susan Shipton) bring the film its nervy elegance.

With its more fanciful elements underpinned by solid research into paedophilia and police approaches to it, The Captive is a bold variation on genre tropes, but it demands a certain leap of faith from viewers willing to enter into the playful and perverse spirit of the game.

Catch Me Daddy Reviewed by Allan Hunter The relentless pursuit of fugitive lovers is a time-honoured plot, but Catch Me Daddy invests the outcome with a particularly grim inevitability. This is not a film in which anything is likely to end well. The feature debut of music-promo director Daniel Wolfe, co-written with his brother Matthew, relishes walking on the wild side as it offers a bleak vision of a postindustrial Britain and of a Pakistani family in which a father’s sense of honour is more prized than life itself.

It covers similar territory to Shan Khan’s recent UK theatrical release Honour, but with much more cinematic flair and dramatic credibility. There will be critical support for a film that shows some of the promise previously glimpsed in the early work of Thomas Clay or Paul Andrew Williams, but it could never be termed a crowdpleaser. The oppressive tone and the occasional burst of shocking, blood-spattered violence will render any critical approval hard to translate into a significant theatrical appeal.

Catch Me Daddy begins in a manner suggesting Bruno Dumont had decided to make a film in the Yorkshire moors. Robbie Ryan’s evocative cinematography is one of the film’s true stars.

There is a real feel of damp and chill, mist and mud and a silence broken only by whistling wind or the patter of rain drops on a caravan roof.

The caravan is a temporary home to BritishAsian girl Laila (newcomer Sameena Jabeen Ahmed) and her Scottish boyfriend Aaron (Conor McCarron from NEDS). There is a sense too that any moments of domestic bliss are just the calm snatched before the storm. The slategrey skies are a sign of the reckoning to come.

In true Romeo And Juliet fashion, Laila has defied the will of her family and now her brother Zaheer (Ahmad) is closing in, determined to bring her home to their father Tariq (Zakir).

Assistance in tracking her down is provided by gormless psycho Barry (Nunney) and his cokesniffing sidekick Tony (Lewis). Zaheer also has a

car-load of associates determined to see honour upheld and defiance punished. It is only a matter of time before they all collide.

The never-ending misery is wearying and some of the tough-guy dialogue hard to catch.

There are a few welcome signs of the affection and anguish felt by Zaheer and Tariq for the course of action they are following, but most of the Pakistani pursuers are little more than onedimensional thugs. The ending is also more likely to frustrate than intrigue. There are issues of tone and substance that might temper enthusiasm for Catch Me Daddy, but it still contains some real promise.

deep water — Julien, a dealer in industrial machinery who lives in the small town of SaintJustin and lives an ostensibly happy domestic life with wife Delphine (Drucker) and their young daughter. But at the start of the film, we see Julien enjoying a torrid sexual tryst in the hotel room of the title, in the company of Esther (the film’s co-writer Stéphanie Cléau), the local pharmacist, who is also married.

Precisely what has happened as a result of the couple’s secret liaison is teasingly spelled out in snippets of information, and it is not until nearly an hour in that the film reveals in full the nature of the case in which Julien is caught up — and the reason he is being interrogated by local police and examining magistrate Diem (a brilliant, hawk-like Laurent Poitrenaux).

We are in prime Simenon territory, and classic French thriller territory too, in the tradition of Clouzot and Chabrol (paid homage in the image of a single droplet of blood). But the film’s daring execution is more in the mode of the modernist fragmentation of Alain Resnais, weaving a complex network of close-ups (showing telling details of both symbolic and narrative import), while the sound design knits voice-overs, overheard dialogue, legal testi-

mony and unnervingly repeated lines of dialogue, to vertiginous effect.

Stéphanie Cléau, plucked eyebrows making her resemble a ’40s film siren, is an unnerving, seductive presence and Amalric evokes desperation and anxiety in his inimitable way. The film is elegantly shot by Christophe Beaucarne in Academy ratio — inducing claustrophobia, as well as invoking classic cinema — and the editing is a jigsaw tour de force by Francois Gédigier. A knowingly florid retro score by Grégoire Hetzel completes a delicious package.

The Blue Room Reviewed by Jonathan Romney Indefatigable French actor Mathieu Amalric has had an odd occasional career on the other side of the camera, jumping with magpie eclecticism from theme to theme — family comedy, political media, the new burlesque scene — with hit-and-miss results. However, he scores his most accomplished directing achievement yet in The Blue Room (La Chambre Bleue), in which he also stars — a tense adaptation of a Georges Simenon novel.

The film is on one hand deeply traditional — a small-town story of a crime investigation hinging on adulterous passion and bourgeois secrets.

On the other hand, this is a clipped, fragmented piece of cinematic modernism, shuffling its time frames in a staccato narrative that makes for a tense, involving experience from start to finish.

The criminal and sexual content — including full-frontal male and female nudity — echoes of a classic Gallic film noir tradition and a terrific lead performance from Amalric should make this a hot item for distributors and festivals alike, despite its unusually concise running time.

Party Girl Reviewed by Mark Adams A fascinating, raw and often powerful interweaving of fact and fiction, Un Certain Regard opener Party Girl plays like a gritty soap opera at times, slowing the introduction of its lead characters and getting more engaging as the film draws on. Playing a version of herself, the vibrant Angélique Litzenburger (the real-life mother of co-director-writer Samuel Theis) is a dominant character whose conflicted personality is the beating heart of the film.

Using non-professional actors and with a storyline loosely based on their own lives, the film’s neo-realist roots shine, with the film-makers noting an explicit link to Maurice Pialat and John Cassavetes, with films such as A Woman Under The Influence and Mamma Roma (stories of free-spirited, atypical women) a strong reference.

The film follows Angélique, an exuberant, almost 60-year-old woman living in Lorraine near the France/ German border, who has only known the nightlife, having worked as a bar hostess in ‘cabaret clubs’ in the region. She has four grown-up children but is hardly the perfect example of motherhood, still relishing her club life with fellow dancers and hostesses.

She likes to drink too much and hang out in a bar, despite the dwindling customer base. Michel (Bour), a regular client, is in love with her, and to her surprise he proposes. To her even greater surprise, she says yes.

Angélique adjusts to life in the daylight and living in Michel’s ordinary house, rather than her usual life of being carried drunkenly to bed by a bouncer from the club. She struggles to adjust — and has a drunken lapse — before her children (played by real-life children Mario and Samuel Theis, and Séverine and Cynthia Litzenburger) arrive from different parts of France to help arrange the wedding and share rare quality time with her.

The film originated with Angélique’s real-life wedding, and weaves in autobiographical elements such as her cabaret life, children and unique outlook. While the opening half — which details the cabaret and how she views her new domestic world — is quite intriguing, the film comes to life in the second part when her children arrive to try and support her, with the late arrival of youngest daughter Cynthia, who had been placed in a foster home, the most poignant. The family has a good relationship with Cynthia, but at the same time does not really know her.

The realist style of the film is what resonates as Party Girl delves into an intimate story among a group of people — and a region — seen rarely on film.

The unrelenting abuse that runs through Keren Yedaya’s That Lovely Girl (Loin De Mon Pere) is heartbreakingly difficult to bear — let alone watch — at times, but while this bleak and dour film is defined by its sense of unhappiness, the strong central performances make it disturbingly mesmeric as it weaves its sad tale.

The film, which screens in Un Certain Regard, is simply about abuse — sexual, physical, emotional and mental, and not forgetting self-abuse in terms of self-harm — and while perhaps too dark and lacking a positive moral resolution, its powerful story is told with simple rigour and a determination to pull no punches.

The film opens in relatively tantalising fashion as Tami (Turjeman), in her early twenties, spends time with the rather brutish Moshe (Grad), though initially their relationship is not clear. Soon it is evident that, while they are father and daughter, they live together in a cruel and often violent relationship from which she seems unable to free herself. Instead she is sexually subservient, given to self-harm and binge eating (followed by vomiting), and desperate to hang onto the ‘love’ he offers her.

Moshe offers a brutal kind of affection — he has perfunctory sex with Tami when he wants it — and, while calling her pretty, also criticises her for putting on weight.

When he brings a girlfriend back for Passover, Tami is mortified and walks out, heading for a Tel Aviv beach where she drinks with a bunch of guys and ends up having sex with several of them… again simply pliable as she seeks affection only to be abused in a matter-of-fact style.

When Tami loses her purse, she is helped by Shuli (Abecassis), who takes her back to her flat, lets her sleep there and tends her self-inflicted wounds, mirroring the only bit of tender care Moshe shows. The two women start to live a low-key domestic life — cleaning and cooking, smoking dope and laughing at television programmes — with Tami’s need for affection being satisfied, though there is an underlying sense that Shuli is also taking advantage of this damaged young woman.

Yedaya has adapted the story from the novel Away From His Absence by Shez, and while That Lovely Girl is consistently uncomfortable, Yedaya’s determination — and that of her actors — to never veer from its depressing and sad story is oddly admirable. Even a ‘dream sequence’ late in the film, which offers a perverse variation on ‘happiness’ for this couple, fits into the gloomy ethos of the film.

Darker Than Midnight Reviewed by Lee Marshall There’s no doubting the bravery of Davide, the androgynous 14-year-old Sicilian boy whose story forms the centrepiece of Sebastiano Riso’s debut. Based on the true early life story of a leading Italian drag queen — a connection that in this final edit is alluded to only in one blinkand-you-miss-it final credit sequence — the film charts the conflicted teen’s discovery, in downtown Catania, of a supportive alternative family of gender-flexible chancers, hustlers and performers, when he runs away from his repressive Catholic home.

If only the script and direction had the same sense of purpose. In a film that doesn’t want its hero or audience to suffer too much, and goes easy even on a paedophile pimp, Darker Than Midnight (Piu Buio Di Mezzanotte) comes across as an early Gus Van Sant film, sanitised for a young teen audience. It’s also surprisingly flatline in dramatic terms, given the material.

Released by Cinecitta Luce on May 15, after its Critics’ Week debut, the film will nevertheless rouse some audience interest at home in Italy, where the debate on freedom of sexual and gender expression still has some ground to cover, and will likely be stirred, rather than patronised,

by Midnight’s soft-shoe approach and simplistic ‘prejudice is bad’ message. Elsewhere, this is not likely to set the pulse racing, despite the admit-

tedly striking poster image of flame-haired lead Davide Capone, who has a borderline boy-girl face that compels the attention.

But looking and expressing are different things, and behind the camera, Capone’s performance lacks the spark we feel a kid who made the conscious decision to leave his family home aged 14 must have possessed. At first his passivity is interesting: there is a quiet determination behind his shy suppression of emotion, and we follow, intrigued, as the roving camera tracks Davide’s lonely exploration of a city park that takes him to a porn theatre where he runs the gauntlet of dirty old men wanting to ‘daddy’ him.

Here he meets up with La Rettore (Gulizia), a Depeche-Modish fellow androgyne who introduces Davide to his variegated group of friends — including a poor man’s Marilyn Monroe transvestite hooker (Morosini, in one of the film’s more committed performances).

A gang-of-friends support network is duly formed, while flashbacks fill in Davide’s family back story, showing him to be the victim of an authoritarian father (Amato), a conformist enraged by his effeminate son’s ‘shameful’ failure to be a good, skirt-chasing Italian son, and a fragile mother: both paying lip service to the orthodoxy that, hey, in the end everyone’s a victim.

Silvered Water: Syria Self-Portrait Reviewed by Fionnuala Halligan Silvered Water: Syria Self-Portrait is a visual poem of raw pain from exiled Syrian director Ossama Mohammed; a young Kurdish woman called ‘Simav’ (‘Silvered Water’) under siege in Homs; and 1,001 images from mobile phones and cameras across the country. It is also a scream of grief.

The agonising images on screen — from beatings to executions to the bodies of dead children — should not, in theory, be surprising: we know, or ought to know, what is taking place there, particularly in Homs. People have given their lives so that we should know. However the pixelated precision of their savage reality takes your breath away.

Silvered Water is a modern-day Shoah: a film that should be seen — a silver bullet in the face of apathy and easy judgment. The twisted hulk of Homs, its corpses lying in the streets, its animals mutilated and its orphaned children defenceless, is a terrible sight. Footage of Vietnam changed the course of the war, and the bombed ruins of the Siege of Sarajevo prompted an international intervention. There is so much more now and yet it seems to mean

so much less. Through Simav’s lens, Homs looks like an Armageddon in our midst.

Mohammed has structured Silvered Water as an elegy as opposed to a documentary, although his ode has a tough, uncompromising edge.

Exiled in France, obsessed with cinema, he comes to believe this footage being shot of the war is the beginning of a new film-making, that Syrians are reimagining film itself. He calls them “a community of dead poets”.

Footage is shot at close range by captors and killers and victims alike (with varying degrees of clarity). When he is contacted by Wiam ‘Simav’ Bedirxan, a young Kurdish woman in Homs who would like to become a film-maker, they begin an exchange: “If your camera was here, what would you be filming?” she asks.

The answer is death and despair. Mutilated bodies lying in blood, rain and filth, comrades risking their lives to hook their fallen back to dignity, under sniper fire, using wires and ropes. The film clearly has its genesis with the uprising, in the anti-Assad forces, but by the end Simav wonders whether “I will die in a basement at the hands of a rebel leader”.

Silvered Water: Syria Self-Portrait starts out shakily, its perspective unclear and its footage

grainy. The editing grows, however, to a force: credited to Maisoun Asaad with additional editing by Dani Abo Louh and Lea Masson, it must have been a painful job to assemble.

Sound editing from Raphael Girardot is nicely innovative — using natural sound but amplifying and reinforcing it in ways that work to convey chaos, confusion and fear.

Back in the saddle Kristian Levring tells Wendy Mitchell about the inspiring process of making The Salvation, a ‘Western that’s a myth about Westerns’

M

aking The Salvation, Denmarkborn, London-based director Kristian Levring says simply, “is a childhood dream come true... it’s like playing again, being a boy”.

He grew up in Denmark watching blackand-white Westerns on Saturday afternoons — films by John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, Howard Hawks and Sergio Leone. “Why on earth do a genre that everyone says is dead?” he says of his new film, which has its world premiere as a Midnight Screening tonight. “It’s to be able to play in the playground of Leone or Ford. Of course the genre’s not dead.”

Even though Levring is one of the fathers of the Dogme movement, The Salvation certainly is not a Dogme Western. “I wanted to make a classic Western; to do an arthouse Western wouldn’t make sense,” he says. It has authenticity but feels more inspired by classic films than by realities of the Wild West. “I made a Western that’s a myth about Westerns,” he says proudly, adding that fans of the genre will be able to spot about 70 references to other films.

The story, co-written with Anders Thomas Jensen, follows a Danish settler (Mads Mikkelsen) in 1870s America who sets out to avenge the murder of his family and take down a corrupt gang boss (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). And Levring reports: “ Writing the script was as fun as shooting it.”

The men on the set — Mikkelsen, Morgan, Mikael Persbrandt and Eric Cantona — seemed to also delve into their own childhood cowboy fantasies. “They loved all the boots and guns,” Levring reports. “One actor — I won’t say who — said, ‘now I understand why America won’t get rid of its gun laws’.”

Eva Green plays a tough frontier woman who is mute after having her tongue cut out.

“She had that strength,” the director says.

“It was hard to play someone who can’t speak at all.”

The Salvation’s equine stars a challenge. Not to mention getting a diverse cast into the saddle. “They did their own riding. Some were better than others,” he adds with a laugh.

The film shot on location for eight weeks in South Africa, where Levring’s team constructed their own Wild West towns (interiors and exteriors). The production also shot scenery in Montana and Utah to add more authentic vistas in post-production.

The Salvation is mostly in the English language but due to its origins it has been tagged as a “Danish Western”. “The majority of people who survived in the Wild West were European immigrants,” Levring notes. “Mads’ character is Danish but he’s an American character. People like that will never go back [home]. They may have an accent but they’re all American. It’s interesting to remember these Danes were part of American history.”

His past experience, including his Dogme work as well as decades of commercials, brought him to the point of The Salvation.

“Your past work is always in you,” he says. “I made a decision to make a clear-cut genre movie. Once you make that decision, it guides you. You have to stay true to the genre.”

Levring will again move genres with his next film, Detroit, the horror film Lars von Trier is writing for his old Dogme brother.

Details are scant on the Zentropa production so far, only that it is a horror film set in the s struggling US city. ■

oming on the back of 2013’s record high of $1.75bn (WON1.88tr), South Korea’s box office started off softly this year, up 0.5% in the first quarter year on year at $396.6m (WON408.5bn).

Meanwhile, admissions were down from 55.44 million to 54.56 million according to the Korean Film Council.

Local film market share also dropped from 69.4% to 59.1%, reflecting a lack of big local hits and the success of foreign films such as Frozen, which became the first animation to record more than 10 million admissions in Korea. US films took 44.5% of the market while European films took 4.2%, Japanese films 1.4% and the remainder less than 1% in total, marking a polarisation between local and US films.

With the nation still reeling from the Sewol ferry disaster, Korean film-maker Ryoo Seung-wan noted that films “can help heal the grief ”. In that sense, Koreans might be coming to Cannes a bit more subdued but all the more willing to take part in the sharing of cinema.

Korea has three films making their world premieres at Cannes 2014: A Girl At My Door, The Target and A Hard Day. Additionally Korean sales companies are bringing a host of debuts to the Market, spanning dramas, crime thrillers, action adventure, high-school romance s and horror. ■

rible way, when in fact it just had a different way of thinking. So that’s how I came up with the girl Dohee and our story.

How did Lee Chang-dong come to produce your film and what influence did he have?

JJ My school, the Korea National University of Arts, had an industry-university collaboration with CJ [CJ E&M] where it selected five treatments to be in a workshop with Lee Chang-dong as the mentor. Five of us developed our projects with Mr Lee, meeting all together once every two weeks. At the end of it, they selected one project to be produced by CJ. It wasn’t mine. But Mr Lee suggested that his company, Pine House, produce my film.

He was helpful every step of the way and encouraged the cast and crew on location. He told me about how he’d directed his films and how to get the outcome you want.

Produced by Poetry director Lee Chang-dong and starring Bae Doo-na from Air Doll and The Host as a police chief exiled to a seaside town, the film has Cannes regulars on board as well as young Kim Sae-ron, from hit thriller The Man From Nowhere, playing an abused local girl, and Song Sae-byuk (Sector 7) as the chief ’s visiting lover.

How did this project get started?

July Jung The idea for the script came from a story I heard somewhere about a cat whose owner loved it a lot, but then got a new cat and stopped loving it. One day, the owner is about to put on their shoes to go to work and is shocked to find a dead mouse inside one.

The owner thinks the cat is taking revenge and is frightened. So they give the cat a beating and expect it to have learned its lesson.

But the next day, they find a bloody skinned mouse in the shoe. Actually, the unloved cat was trying to give its owner a tasty meal.

When it got the beating, the cat thought, “Oh, my owner can’t eat the skin like I do,” and took it off for them the next day.

That story stayed with me for a long time. I thought about what it’d be like if it were a child thought to be taking revenge in a hor-

What was the shoot like?

JJ We shot from September 8 to November 1, 2013. The main background is a seaside town, so we went to places like Sooncheon and Geumho-do. Moving around to faraway locations was hard, but the biggest restriction was that it is set in the middle of summer and we had limited time to capture the season.

We had nothing but a script and belief about how we could get that onto the screen.

I’m so thankful to the cast and crew for their trust and the consensus about how to do better to get the film made.

How did you cast the film?

JJ This was my first feature and it is lowbudget, but I was still looking for the best actors for each character. I saw Bae Doo-na in a recent film and as soon as I saw her first scene, I thought, “Ah, she’s the one!” The film was Ko-ri-a [As One], but it wasn’t because of the table tennis. It was because she looked so different from the image of ‘Bae Doo-na the actress’. She was shooting in London at the time and they told me when they e-mailed her the script. Exactly three hours after that, I was told she’d do it.

For the role of young Dohee, I wasn’t in a position to write with a particular actress in mind, but Kim Sae-ron was the first I thought of after I finished the script.

As for Song Sae-byuk, there aren’t a lot of actors his age who can manage perfect Jeollado dialect and the role isn’t one of a charming bad guy. I needed an actor who’d look at the whole film and think about the meaning. He was even better than I expected in bringing the character to life.

What are your goals as a film-maker?

JJ I want to be able to make my next film if at all possible and to keep working steadily.

There are some directors who take one thing and dig deep into it, but I think I’m more the kind that will keep changing. I hope I’ll be s able to get better as I change. n

irector Chang is bringing The Target, a Korean remake of French action thriller Point Blank, to Cannes’ out of competition Midnight Screenings. Although released in Korea on April 30, the film was edited for a 15-andover rating and Cannes will have the world premiere of the uncensored cut. The film stars Ryu Seung-ryong from the hit Miracle In Cell No. 7 as a former mercenary who is framed for a murder. Wounded, he is helped by a medical resident at the hospital played

by Lee Jin-uk (Miss Granny) whose pregnant wife is subsequently kidnapped . Yu Jun-sang (Fists Of Legend) features as one of the men after them in this 36-hour chase.

How did this project get started?

Chang The head of Yong Film had bought the remake rights to the French film Point Blank. I’d seen the film without knowing this, but I liked the speed and how it had a wellwoven, clean finish. They offered me an adapted script and I started working with that. Originally, I directed music videos and commercials, but making films was always my dream. By chance, I was able to direct Death Bell and that was the start of my filmmaking life. The Target is my second film.

There’s something about film-making that is addictive. Once you’re taken in by its seduction, you can’t get over it.

How is it different from the French original?

Chang I wanted to take all the good things about Point Blank, but remake it with a completely different sensibility. Korea has a family-centred system where person-to-person relationships are very much about affection and attachments. I wanted to use that to make a Korean film, to have that melt into the original French Point Blank to become what The Target is.

What did you have to change to get the 15-and-over rating?

Chang The level of violence was an issue, and also concerns about the risk of copycat crimes.

We originally showed the process in which the main character builds a bomb using ordinary products like bleach and laundry detergent that you can find in real life. The ending is also slightly different. In the Korean version, it’s a nice, warm ending with an epilogue four years after the case is solved, but the villain doesn’t get punished. In the original version, the evil one drinks poison mixed in water and dies. There was the concern that there would be copycats. It’s strange because the level of violence was not that high.

So is the Cannes version the director’s cut?

Chang I wouldn’t call it the director’s cut — that will come later. The version we’re screening in Cannes is the uncensored cut, the one

we originally submitted to the media ratings board that got a teenager-restricted rating.

How did you cast the film?

Chang Ryu Seung-ryong had already enjoyed seeing the original and he was on board when I agreed to direct. He and I have known each other for a long time and worked together on a music video, too, so I knew we would share a synergy effect. The other actors I contemplated carefully. I didn’t want to be too focused on action. I think people’s gazes, the look in their eyes, are very important.

What was the shoot like?

Chang We had 45 or 46 shooting days from October to January, mostly in and around Seoul. Action films take a tremendous amount of energy; it’s tough for the actors and the crew. We were shooting in such cold weather, too. I remember a particularly cold day when we were making it rain. Ryu Seung-ryong was drenched and I wanted to capture him trembling with the cold but he wasn’t. I knew that if I asked him to do it on purpose it would be awkward, so we just kept shooting until he trembled. Sometimes, to shoot reasonably, you have to give the actors a hard time and it can’t be helped. We hardly shot any scenes that were not used. We went in with accurate storyboards for what we needed, although s there was room for manoeuvre. ■

doesn’t really fit the genre type for this sort of film, but he is certainly persuasive, and that’s why we cast him.

Now, Cho Jin-woong plays a straight-up villain. It’s not interesting when someone just conveniently plays the kind of educational, good-vs-evil villain’s role and cuts out. But we couldn’t go into a whole background story. So we needed someone who would be attractive in their behaviour, and have a sort of humour that wasn’t intentional but still penetrating.

The actors both display a whole new level of intensity. How did you direct them?

KS Trust was important. I couldn’t ask the actors to trust me just on the basis of my previous work, so we met and spent a lot of time together. The actors had to trust themselves and the script they had chosen, as well as each other, too. We put in a lot of work during pre-production so they could be freer during the shoot.

orean director Kim Seong-hun’s A Hard Day is making its world premiere in Directors’ Fortnight. Lee Sun-kyun (Helpless, Nobody’s Daughter Haewon) plays a cop who accidentally hits a man with his car and hides the body in his mother’s coffin. Cho Jin-woong (Hwayi: A Monster Boy, Nameless Gangster: Rules Of The Time) plays a narcotics cop who is looking for the body for his own corrupt reasons and the two are tangled up in a desperate battle.

This is quite a departure from your first feature, How The Lack Of Love Affects Two Men. How did the new film come about?

Kim Seong-hun You could say that what my first and second films have in common is characters that are in absurd situations. For my first feature, I was asked to adapt a serial novel. After it didn’t do so well, I realised I needed to do something I really wouldn’t regret, that I wouldn’t be ashamed of.

wanted to make a film that went ‘all the way’.

[A play on the film’s original title, Ggeutggaji Ganda, which roughly translates as Going All The Way.] Of course now that it’s done, I see things I wish I’d done better, but I did write and direct A Hard Day from scratch.

I got the idea for this film after watching Pedro Almodovar’s Volver. Penelope Cruz’s daughter kills her stepfather and they put him in a freezer and bury it by a river. I thought, “Does it not rain there?” Because in Korea, if you buried a body by a river, it would rain and the body would float up. So I started thinking about ways to conceal a burial, about the most taboo things in Korea [that would be deterrents], and those were a grave and a mother who would take your crime and hide it forever.

What about the action scenes?

KS I’m not an expert in action and this was my first action film. When I was explaining what I wanted to the martial-arts choreographer, he said, “Then Sun-kyun is going to have to get hit directly, and Jin-woong is going to have to hit him, directly.” The actors agreed to it and they went all the way, tirelessly. We shot the apartment action scene over a gruelling three or four days. I felt so sorry for them but I had to pretend not to notice. In order not to be sorry towards them once the film was in theatres, I had to make them go all the way on set.

Lee Sun-kyun fractured his ribs towards the end of that shoot, but he kept on going. He actually used the pain in his acting. I’m so sorry and so thankful to him.

How did you cast the film?

KS Our protagonist might or might not be a villain, but he continually does bad things. For something like this, it really depends on the actor to have appeal and get you to sympathise with them. Actually, Lee Sun-kyun
