China, market shifts dominate quiet AFM BY JEREMY KAY
While China’s high-level forays into Hollywood have monopolised the conversation, the view at ground level at a quiet AFM is of a market in flux where lower-tier companies are locked in a fight for survival. Heading into Santa Monica there was a handful of must-haves led by Insiders’ Enzo Ferrari, IM Global’s In Sand And Blood, FilmNation’s The Silent Wife, Protagonist’s The Discovery, Studiocanal’s The Commuter and TWC’s The Current War. Sierra/Affinity’s Liam Neeson-starrer Felt and Mute from Lotus Entertainment dropped into the market once proceedings got underway 2 Night Till Morning
and Lionsgate took US rights to The Commuter and Our Kind Of Traitor. That, however, did not abate the anxiety that continues to permeate proceedings. The growing allure of TV and the challenges posed by digital have brought buyers’ chronic concerns about high prices and lack of product into focus. Even well-capitalised distributors are looking over their shoulder at the digital titans such as Netflix, Amazon Studios, Hulu and iTunes, whose deep pockets and original content rosters have been wooing consumers in a new direction. Sales companies outside the A-list that do not enjoy frequent
and direct lines of communication with the major US agencies are struggling to get scripts, while even those that can offer full financing on a project report difficulties securing talent. Still, the treacherous terrain of theatrical distribution makes long-term contracts and high fees in the Golden Age of Television more compelling to stars, writers and directors. On the other hand, Participant Media CEO David Linde, the former Universal Pictures chairman who knows the business as well as anybody, predicted a drop in TV production that could see film bounce back within a few years.

Wide inks Lat Am, Korea deals French sales outfit Wide Management has inked a number of deals here at AFM, including an all-rights deal in South Korea with Bluebrick for Mikko Kuparinen’s romantic drama 2 Nights Till Morning. Marie-Josée Croze stars in the Montreal World Film Festival premiere about a onenight stand that takes an unexpected turn when a volcanic ash cloud prevents flights from taking off. Kuparinen took Montreal’s best director award for the film. Meanwhile Cordline has picked up TV and VoD rights in Latin America to titles including Pavle Vuckovic’s Cannes entry Panama, Joanna Coates’ Hide And Seek, Simone Scafidi’s Italian drama Eva Braun and Spanish LGBT romantic drama Hidden Away by Mikel Rueda. The Paris-based team also reported strong interest in San Sebastian title After Eden. Andreas Wiseman
Magnolia reigns with Last King BY ANDREAS WISEMAN
Magnolia Pictures has picked up North American rights to Nordic action-adventure epic The Last King from TrustNordisk. Directed by Nils Gaup, the film stars Jakob Oftebro and Kristofer Hivju as medieval warriors who embark on a perilous journey through the Norwegian mountains to take their dying king’s infant son to safety. The deal was negotiated by Magnolia SVP of acquisitions Dori Begley and Magnolia VP of acquisitions John Von Thaden with Susan Wendt of TrustNordisk. “Nils Gaup has crafted another sweeping adventure with The Last King,” said Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles. “The thrilling performances and high stakes of this incredible true story will reso-
That could be too long to wait for standalone sales companies in the middle-to-lower echelons without ties to a capital source. “There’s going to be a contraction,” said Fortitude International co-founder Rob Barnum. “Being just a foreign sales company without a production arm is going to be nearly impossible going forward.” Drastic change does not mean extinction for those willing to study the new environment and adapt their models. “There are big shifts in the way people are consuming entertainment,” said head of Verve Ventures Amy Beecroft. “But in these shifts there’s opportunity.”
nate with audiences.” Magnolia is set to release the film in 2016. Written by Ravn Lanesskog, The Last King was produced by Stein B Kvae and Finn Gjerdrum for Paradox Film 3 AS, co-produced by Nordisk Film, Newgrange Pictures and Proton Cinema+Theatre with support from the Norwegian Film Institute, Irish Film Board and Eurimages. It was developed in collaboration with The Media Programme, Film3 and Midtnorsk Filmsenter. A Norwegian release is set for February 12. Previous deals include Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Koch Media), Italy (Minerva Pictures Group), Czech Republic (Film Europe Media Company), Middle East (Gulf Film), India (Pictureworks) and Estonia (Estinfilm).
Toronto-based Raven Banner has closed AFM deals on The Dead Room led by Falcon Films for the Middle East. Deals also closed for South Korea (Line Tree Entertainment), Philippines (Pioneer), Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia (Mundo Film) and Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Cambodia (Sahamongkol). The Neon Demon
Amazon lands Neon Demon Amazon Studios has acquired Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon for a US theatrical release next summer. It is being handled by Gaumont and Wild Bunch, who co-financed the film, which centres on an aspiring model (Elle Fanning) who moves to LA where her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women. Amazon Studios launched in June to acquire original movies for theatrical release and early-window distribution on Amazon Prime Instant Video.
Insiders goes 20,000 Leagues BY JEREMY KAY
In another bold statement of intent, Insiders has dropped 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea into the market, an independent rival to at least one Hollywood version of the Jules Verne classic in the pipeline. The Wild Bunch offshoot has set Christophe Gans to direct the $55m (¤50m) English-language adventure inspired by the timehonoured underwater tale. Pathé produces alongside Richard Grandpierre, who produced Gans’ 2014 fantasy romance Beauty And The Beast starring Vincent Cassel and Léa Seydoux. Currently in talks with cast, CAA
packaged 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and represents US rights. Pathé will distribute in France. Insiders has been courting buyers throughout the market with Enzo Ferrari, the $80m drama about the motor racing pioneer that will see Michael Mann direct Christian Bale. Paramount swooped on US rights before the market. Bryan Singer recently announced on Instagram that he is preparing his own adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Further details remain unclear but a likely home for that project could be Fox, with whom Singer enjoys close ties through his X-Men series.

Youth, The Lobster, Pigeon lead the pack in EFA nominations BY WENDY MITCHELL
Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth leads the nominees for the 28th European Film Awards (EFAs), which will be presented on December 12 in Berlin. Youth has five nominations including best European film, best director and best screenplay, as well as acting nominations for Rachel Weisz and Michael Caine. Close on its heels with four nominations each are Roy Andersson’s surreal Swedish comedy A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence and Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Lobster. Both films are also nominated in the European film and director categories, as is Sebastian Schipper’s thriller Victoria, which has three nominations. Also with a trio of nominations is Andrew Haigh’s 45 Years, which took the best actor and actress prizes in Berlin earlier this year for stars Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay. Rampling and Courtenay received nominations for European actress and actor while Haigh was nominated for European screenwriter. The nominations for European film of the year are rounded out by Deniz Gamze Erguven’s Mustang and popular Icelandic drama

Joining Courtenay on the European actor shortlist are Michael Caine in Youth, Colin Farrell in The Lobster, Christian Friedel in 13 Minutes and Vincent Lindon in The Measure Of A Man, who took the best actor prize in Cannes. Documentary nominees are A Syrian Love Story by Sean McAllister, Amy by Asif Kapadia, Dancing With Maria by Ivan Gergolet,
The Look Of Silence by Joshua Oppenheimer and Toto and His Sisters by Alexander Nanau. Roy Andersson’s Swedish Oscar submission is also nominated for European comedy alongside Eric Lartigau’s The Bélier Family and Jaco Van Dormael’s The Brand New Testament. The nominees were announced at Seville European Film Festival yesterday. The ceremony’s biggest cheer was reserved for Spanish actress Costa, nominated for her role in Victoria. More than 3,000 EFA members will now vote on the winners. All six European film nominees have US distributors on board. Adopt Films acquired US rights to Silver Bear winner Victoria in Berlin (The Match Factory is handling international sales), while Fox Searchlight, Alchemy and Cohen Media Group struck deals at Cannes for, respectively, Youth, The Lobster and Mustang. Magnolia Pictures released Venice 2014 Golden Lion winner A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence in June, and Cohen Media Group acquired all North American distribution rights to Cannes’ Un Certain Regard winner Rams in August.

MUBI’s global online rights deal for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Junun speaks to their ambitions and seismic market shifts. CEO Efe Cakarel tells Andreas Wiseman about curating an alternative to Netflix
M
UBI CEO Efe Cakarel couldn’t believe his eyes when an e-mail dropped into his inbox early this year with the subject line ‘From Paul Thomas Anderson’. The six-time Oscar nominee, one of Cakarel’s favourite directors, had got in touch to compliment the Londonbased executive on his curated subscription service and to ask if he was free to meet for a chat. “I literally fell off my chair,” beams a still incredulous Cakarel. “We had no idea he was a subscriber.” While the Turkish cinephile and entrepreneur knew the service had some bigname subscribers — the Coen brothers among them — getting Anderson’s e-mail was a watershed moment. “It was incredible because Paul Thomas Anderson and the films he makes is the reason MUBI exists,” he says. “We have so much respect for what he does. And to do it in Hollywood, that is so hard. Michael Haneke is amazing, but try to do that in the studio system. Paul is a true auteur.” Cakarel travelled to Los Angeles some weeks later, where he met the director of There Will Be Blood and The Master for the first time. The two got on well. But better was still to come. During subsequent cor-

respondence, Anderson revealed to Cakarel a previously unannounced and very much under-the-radar documentary he had shot in India: Junun. The documentary tracks Radiohead musician Jonny Greenwood’s efforts to make an album with a host of international artists. Sealing the deal Cakarel politely proffered that the indie film service would be happy to carry the film at a later date, not thinking for a minute he might be able to get it firstrun. He was duly surprised when
avowed celluloid junkie Anderson made it known he would be happy for his first documentary to debut on the digitalonly service, following its New York Film Festival world premiere. Anderson’s CAA representatives cut the deal with MUBI in August. It is uncertain whether other deals were sought for the film although Netflix is rumoured to have put a considerably larger offer on the table. To Cakarel’s delight, however, MUBI secured exclusive digital rights for a 30-day period from mid-October, after which it may be sold to electronic sell-
through services such as iTunes and Netflix. Mostly positive reviews may help with an event theatrical release. Deal points and structure are being kept under wraps but the outlay for MUBI was far higher than anything it had spent before. The marketing campaign alone was close to $1m — five times the cost of the company’s biggest brand push to date earlier this year — and included a sizeable London Underground campaign matched by full-page print adverts in outlets including The New York Times and Time Out. The company consulted several highprofile advertising executives including Richard Flintham, who helped design the posters for the campaign. “If we’re going to blitz the adverts, this is the time,” Cakarel told Screen International just before the release. “Exclusive online premieres of Paul Thomas Anderson films don’t happen every day.” According to Cakarel, the campaign paid off handsomely. “The uptick has been vast,” he says. “We are adding double the number of subs we would normally see each day across the world.” While the theatrical prospects were always likely to be limited on the niche »

SPOTLIGHT MUBI
documentary, considering Anderson’s standing the decision to go with an online platform first (and one other than Netflix or Amazon Prime Instant Video) was unusual. But the decision correlates with a number of industry trends: the growing ties between talent and platforms, the challenges in finding theatrical homes for even well-heeled independent films and the growing allure of online subscription services. It also speaks to MUBI’s stamp of approval among indie-film aficionados and the growing ambitions of former Goldman Sachs banker and MIT computer-science graduate Cakarel (who holds an MBA from Stanford to boot). Formerly known as The Auteurs, the company is swiftly expanding its acquisition ambitions and operational footprint. MUBI has active subscribers across 158 countries and this year closed its first studio library deals with Sony and Paramount. Out of Cannes it also picked up its first film for all-rights distribution: Miguel Gomes’s Directors’ Fortnight entry Arabian Nights, which it will release jointly in the UK with New Wave Distribution next year. “In Cannes, there were only two online platforms negotiating to buy all rights on official selection films outside of the traditional distributors,” says Cakarel. “Netflix was one; we were the other. We talked to two or three distributors about potentially collaborating. We were competing to buy Son Of Saul. We won Arabian Nights.” MUBI is lining up a second exclusive premiere with another well-known director for 2016, and is increasingly looking to pick up films earlier in their cycles. It recently closed deals to screen BFI London Film Festival titles Nicola Costantino: The Artefacta from Coccinelle Film Placement and Lucifer from NDM Sales during the festival. “Next Cannes we’ll be a lot stronger,” adds Cakarel. “We’ll be deploying more capital and we’ll see films and scripts much earlier. My team was at MIPCOM and they’ll be at AFM and Berlin. But Cannes is really our port.” Dollars and sense After eight years, and three adhering to the current curated model, the financials are improving. “We’re growing our revenue at 2% per week,” says Cakarel. “We doubled revenue last year, we’ll double again this year.” But while revenue may be close to a couple of million dollars per year, the company, which charges subs around $4.99 per month, is yet to see profit. Inspired by the strategy of its super-scale rival Amazon, Cakarel is thinking long-term growth ahead of short-term gain. With only 100,000 subscribers, MUBI pales in size compared to its behemoth rivals Amazon and Netflix, with the latter listing an impressive 65 million subs worldwide. Netflix is spending about $4bn a year on film and television content. MUBI, by contrast, spends just a few million dollars.

Despite that, Cakarel still sees his company as the site’s biggest rival. “It’s about asking where the attention of my audience goes,” he says. “Forty percent of our subs are Netflix subs; I am one. The TV offering is great but the film diversity is terrible.” Unlike Netflix, the cheaper MUBI goes for a less-is-more approach. The 30 films on its site at any one time are predominantly arthouse and it shows no TV, a strategy it will not be deviating from any time soon. “We’ll focus on movies, and will provide the best movie experience globally,” Cakarel says. “That’s how we’ll complement Netflix, which is skewing heavily towards TV. The only way to win against Netflix is to have a clearly differentiated model.” So despite the 2015 studio deals, do not expect to see Transformers on the site any time soon. “If Michael Bay had a film he wanted to show on MUBI, the answer would be no,” he says. “That’s when you start losing the brand. That’s when the Coen brothers and Paul Thomas Anderson leave MUBI. Transformers 4 was a bad
film. We say it loud and clear.” The CEO’s call is being heard by industry suitors. In its latest round of funding, MUBI raised an impressive $15m from individuals including Working Title co-chair Eric Fellner, Access Industries head of TMT Jorg Mohaupt, former co-president of Goldman Sachs Jon Winkelried and former CEO of Apple EMEA and Vivendi board member Pascal Cagni. The company has staff in London, San Francisco, Munich, Mexico City and Istanbul. It is now eyeing an office in China and wants to grow its footprint in North America, particularly New York. For the industry, the Junun deal represents a small but noticeable development in the global digital revolution, but for MUBI the acquisition is understandably a big deal. “If it’s a success, we’ll share the numbers,” promises Cakarel. “‘This is how many saw it, this is how much revenue we made, etc.’ This will make us even more interesting to film-makers as a platform for releasing their films.” MUBI’s ceiling is expanding. Time will tell s how far it can stretch. ■
