awards for Sky to overhaul ‘rules of Two Gogglebox and engagement’ with indies Broadchurch BY LISA CAMPBELL

BY ROBIN PARKER

Sky is to overhaul its ‘rules of engagement’ with the indie community after receiving feedback from more than 100 production companies. The broadcaster will respond to ideas more quickly and introduce its first major indie briefing day after admitting it had been “lax” in its communication with producers. Sky director of entertainment channels Stuart Murphy revealed the results of its supplier survey to Broadcast this week, which was prompted by the work done by this magazine and the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival last year into industrywide commissioning relationships. Sky’s survey of 139 companies, including 19 talent agencies, was produced by independent research firm Otherlines.tv. It asked what Sky was like to work with pre-, during and post-production, and found it had the biggest improvements to make in the earlier stages. Indies scored Sky highly on ‘being made to feel welcome in meetings’; ‘creative input in meetings’; and ‘overall communication’, but marked it down compared with other broadcasters on ‘information on the type of show Sky needs’; ‘speed of communicating commissioning decisions’; and ‘acknowledgement of pitches within 24 hours’. As a result, Sky has pledged to acknowledge any idea within 48 hours (excluding weekends), with a fuller response promised within two weeks for non-scripted ideas, and within six weeks for scripted.

ITV drama Broadchurch and Channel 4’s Gogglebox took home two awards apiece at the Broadcast Awards 2014. Kudos’s whodunit beat the likes of BBC2’s The Fall and BBC1’s Last Tango In Halifax to be named Best Drama Series, and also landed Best International Sales. Production has begun on a US remake for Fox. Its success also contributed to ITV’s victory as Channel of the Year. ITV performed well across all genres, gained share and demonstrated strong indie relations. Studio Lambert’s Gogglebox picked up Best Original Programme and Best Popular Factual Programme for taking fixed-rig cameras into the nation’s living rooms. Broadcast named Twofour Independent Producer of the Year for a diverse slate including Splash! and Educating Yorkshire. The latter, which was a ratings smash, also won Best Documentary Series. ➤ For a full list of winners, see broadcastnow.co.uk.

It makes the industry better if we are all open about our performance Stuart Murphy, Sky

The broadcaster will host an indie briefing day in April at Sky Studios for up to 200 producers specialising in non-scripted content, with smaller briefings earmarked for scripted. Producers will receive business as well as creative insight including audience research and strategy. “We have been lax in communication, which I take overall responsibility for; we’re

focused on getting shows on air,” said Murphy. He added: “This is the year for Sky – if we don’t land it this year, we’re never going to. That’s why we’re asking what a good creative conversation looks like. We’re not publicly accountable, but [getting indie feedback] is important. It makes the industry better if we are all open about our performance.” Murphy added that 2014 would be Sky’s biggest year in terms of content, with a £600m spend, including some of its biggest dramas to date, such as Fleming, The Smoke, Penny Dreadful and Fortitude. ➤ Visit broadcastnow.co.uk for a link to the survey in full, and analysis of Sky’s performance compared with other broadcasters.
