Warner Bros believes the combination of US reality television pioneer Mike Darnell and Shed Media Group IP can make the UK superindie a major force in America. The US giant took full control of Shed last week and rebranded the company Warner Bros Television Productions UK in a deal intended to hand its seven indies, including Wall To Wall and Twenty Twenty, increased opportunities in the US. Warner Bros has recently reorganised its US non-scripted division, bringing together Shed Media US, The Bachelor producer Warner Horizon and The Ellen DeGeneres Show indie Telepictures Productions under the leadership of Mike Darnell, the former Fox reality chief who joined last August. The UK Shed indies will have increased access to Darnell, Warner’s president of unscripted and alternative television, and will be encouraged to co-develop ideas with the Kitchen Nightmares and American Idol commissioner. Ricochet TV chief executive Nick Emmerson has been promoted to joint managing director of Warner Bros Television Productions UK alongside Shed chief operating officer Claire Hungate. She will report to Emmerson, who will in turn report to Warner Bros Television Group chief content officer Peter Roth, and will work closely with Darnell. “We’d like to create more of a group sense and have the indies
BBC3 was the big winner at this week’s Broadcast Digital Awards, picking up five gongs including Channel of the Year. The youth digital channel beat CBBC, Dave, Discovery Channel, E4 and ITV2 to the prize, and was also named Best Factual Channel and Best Entertainment Channel. Meanwhile, its zombie drama In The Flesh picked up Best Scripted Programme and The Call Centre (below) was named Best Popular Factual Programme. The success comes as the BBC Trust weighs up whether to rubber-stamp plans to take the channel online next year. Judges praised the breadth of its output across comedy, drama, factual and entertainment. Broadcast editor Chris Curtis said: “BBC3’s multiple win at the Broadcast Digital Awards is a clear sign that the TV industry believes it is in rude health. Its challenge is to maintain that level of excellence as an online channel next year.” ➤ See broadcastnow.co.uk for details of the other winners
Styled To Rock: producer Twenty Twenty will benefit from greater US access
We’d like the indies to feel much more connected to the mothership in LA Jeffrey Schlesinger, Warner Bros
all feel much more connected to the mothership in Los Angeles,” said Warner Bros Worldwide Television Distribution president Jeffrey Schlesinger. One senior Shed source said as well as closer ties with Warner’s Burbank headquarters, there have been hints of more development investment. The full takeover also means Shed indie bosses are now “postearnout”, the source added,
meaning there will less focus on hitting short-term targets and more on creating bigger shows. This was echoed by Schlesinger, who said this was one of the reasons behind Warner accelerating its full takeover after buying 55.8% of Shed for £100m in 2010. Warner is also planning to boost the rollout of US formats to the UK. Its UK indies will now have access to Darnell’s growing slate of reality series, including I Slept With A Celebrity. The takeover was announced to 60 of Shed’s most senior staff at Warner’s London headquarters last week, where Schlesinger and Roth spoke. Shed chief executive Nick Southgate also revealed his departure and told Broadcast he may move out of TV.
