Tangerine’s Taylor to make TV transition By Andreas Wiseman

Transgender Tangerine star Mya Taylor is developing a TV series based on her transition. Her performance in Sean Baker’s Sundance hit has helped generate awards buzz around the film, which Magnolia and backers the Duplass brothers are hopeful will connect with Academy voters.

Taylor revealed the TV project in an interview about Tangerine due to run in Screen tomorrow. “My experience was way more dramatic than that of the characters in Tangerine,” said Taylor. “I have a team working on a TV series that will cover the struggle pre transition, during transition and after. I would be an exec producer.”

Meanwhile director Baker is looking to change tack on his next project, a children’s film set in Florida that would reunite many of the behind-the-camera team on Tangerine. “It will hopefully have a bigger budget,” he said. Magnolia clocked a number of international deals on the festival favourite and took $700,000 at the US box office.

Canadian businessman Ian Ihnatowycz will be at AFM this weekend to meet potential buyers for Bitter Harvest, the $20m period epic he fully financed. Max Irons, Terence Stamp, Barry Pepper and Samantha Barks star in the English-language tale about the Holodomor, the genocidal famine that killed millions in Ukraine. Ihnatowycz, whose par-

ents fled post-war Ukraine, commissioned Richard Bachynsky Hoover and George Mendeluk to write the project; Mendeluk (Lonesome Dove: The Series) also directed. The president and CEO of Toronto-based private investment firm First Generation Capital formerly founded investment firm Acuity, which was sold in 2011 for $7.6bn. “This is a historical event

that’s virtually unknown in the west,” said Ihnatowycz. “I wanted to make this story understood more widely so making it English language with a known cast will hopefully make it more appealing to a western audience.” Los Angeles-based Spotlight Pictures will be shopping Bitter Harvest at AFM. Stuart Baird, Mendeluk, Chad Barager and Jaye Gazeley produced the film.

INTERVIEW KANG HYE-JUNG

From learners to Veteran Korean producer Kang Hye-jung of Filmmaker R&K discusses her long collaboration with director husband Ryoo Seung-wan — including their local box-office smash Veteran — and the challenges of finding new Korean directing voices. Jean Noh reports

K

orean producer Kang Hye-jung still can’t believe the massive success of her latest film Veteran, directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, her husband and partner at Filmmaker R&K. With more than 13.4 million admissions, it is now the third most-viewed film in Korean box-office history, after Roaring Currents and Ode To My Father. “When the film’s release was postponed, well… we wrapped the shoot July 1, 2014 and it was supposed to open in early October, but CJ said that it was too good to release in the slow season,” says Kang. “That’s when I realised this film was getting acknowledged. I was hoping the total admissions would be a little more than The Berlin File — it was hard to hope for more. At the time, 2.8 million admissions would have been enough to hit the break-even point. Now that this has happened, it doesn’t feel real.” Film-making couple Kang met Ryoo at a workshop in 1993. Like many who had been student democracy activists in college, she wasn’t going to be able to join the mainstream workforce and was teaching at a tutorial school when she happened to see a flyer for a 16mm film-making workshop. “I paid KW350,000 [$300] and as if by fate I became a student again after graduating college, and my husband was the teaching assistant,” she says. “We met and did a film together and then dated for about five years.” Although Kang had gone to one of the top universities in Korea, Ryoo was a high-school graduate who, from his early teens, had raised his younger brother Ryoo Seung-bum (who features in his films including Die Bad and The Unjust). “People tried so hard to pull us apart that we became even more solid in the process,” she says. Ryoo worked as a director’s assistant to Park Chan-wook while Kang learned the ropes of marketing and producing. In 2000, she produced Ryoo’s feature debut Die Bad, which grew out of a short that so impressed the industry that a number of professionals gave their time and effort almost for free to help him expand it into a feature. “I always say it would be hard for a married couple even if we were running a street cart together,” says Kang. “Ryoo Seung-wan wants things that a director wants. I’m a producer and our roles will clash, as well as our

“Instead, it totally flopped. You have to add something new and different each time, something you can get excited about.” “We thought long and hard about why it is we want to make films and how,” she continues. “The Unjust was what saved us, and we made that film with our teeth gritted. We know now that if ever there’s a worst-case scenario where we can’t make films again, we will until that day make films that give happiness and are worthwhile and valuable. We decided this then and we won’t abandon this because back then we really thought it would come to that — having to quit.”

personal tastes. But those are difficulties you have, whoever you work with.” R&K’s first production, The City Of Violence, did reasonably well at the box office, sold to The Weinstein Company and garnered critical acclaim. But their second production, Dachimawa Lee, flopped. The bubble had burst on the rush to finance Korean films, investors wouldn’t take their meetings, and the couple’s production house was in danger of shutting down altogether. “Dachimawa Lee was a big hit in 2000 [as a medium-length film that became a cult favourite] and we arrogantly thought if we remade it like this as a feature, settling for a safe bet, it would do well,” Kang recalls.

Moving on and up With 2013’s The Berlin File, Kang and Ryoo set out to make a thrilling espionage adventure, although the task proved difficult, leading to a change of focus for their subsequent project, Veteran. “Director Ryoo was thinking that in order to talk seriously with a lot of people, you have to make a film light and mainstream,” says Kang. Veteran, about an incorruptible police detective going up against the scion of a bigbusiness family whose wealth and connections have protected him from criminal prosecution, struck a chord in Korean society. “It became a commercial hit that people come out of saying they had a good time but also found something that stayed with them,” observes Kang. “It wasn’t didactic, it was fun, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the confidence Ryoo has gained from this is reflected in his next film.” Ryoo is currently working on the script for Gunhamdo, about forced Korean labourers who escape from the titular island during the Japanese occupation. The film is about to go into pre-production with the intention to start shooting next spring. “Director Ryoo has declared it has to be completely different from Veteran, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how it turns out,” Kang says. “It’s about history so it will be earnest, but he won’t make it heavy.” When it comes to working with other »

Kang agrees the international market for Korean films has changed. “It’s not like when buyers were picking up Korean films like hotcakes and of course not like the climax of the bubble of 2005-06,” she says. “But I think Korean films are recognised abroad for their quality. SPOTLIGHT GRANDVIEW

Jeff Silver

Matt Rosen

Time for talent

With writers such as Bridge Of Spies’ Matt Charman on their books, former CAA agents Matt Rosen and Jeff Silver have LA-based management firm Grandview off to a flying start. Andreas Wiseman reports

S

ince launching last summer, Matt Rosen, Jeff Silver and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones’ Los Angeles-based management firm Grandview has grown its client base to almost 100. While Rosen and Silver focus on repping film and TV writers and directors, Automatik Entertainment president Kavanaugh-Jones advises on packaging. Clients include screenwriters Matt Charman (Bridge Of Spies), Mark Heyman (Black Swan) and Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel (Race). Roughly 20% of the expanding outfit’s client base is international and that percentage is growing; more actor representation could follow. Screen caught up with former CAA agents Rosen and Silver to discuss the company and the talent landscape.

One year in, what are the most important lessons you’ve learnt? Matt Rosen Focus. We’re one of the only management companies in the US that has a complete separation between representation and production. Our clients know their managers are not thinking about anything other than their needs. What’s your client split between film and television? MR I would say it’s 50/50. Jeff Silver Something we look for in all our clients is diversification of creativity and ambition across different genres and

platforms. Mark Heyman, the writer of Black Swan and The Skeleton Twins, is a perfect example. He’s writing the feature How To Catch A Russian Spy for director Marc Webb and also a project for AMC called Marvel. Michael Mitnick is another. He started out writing great theatre. A couple of years ago he wrote a script called The Current War, which is going into production this fall with Alfonso Gomez-Rejon directing for TWC and Jake Gyllenhaal and Benedict Cumberbatch on board to star. Off of that, he wrote an early version of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Pinocchio at Warner Bros. But we wanted to make sure he was exploring other pursuits as well so he just wrote on the new series of HBO’s Vinyl and he sold a feature idea to Big Beach Films for him to direct. There’s a lot of stuff to juggle, a lot of stuff to focus on. We need to make sure all the trains keep running. What is Brian’s role in the company today? MR We started the company with the belief there would be a complete separation of church and state, which has remained. We do not have a first look with Brian on films. If the client wants to show Brian film scripts, we’re happy for them to be doing that. But we advise that they should show it to a couple of people and get a sense of what they feel is the best fit.

26 Screen International at AFM November 6, 2015

Brian KavanaughJones

which has been really fun. He sold a book series that he’s going to be working on [A Foreign Country] to Colin Firth’s company Raindog. He also sold an original idea to Studiocanal. Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse are among the most high-end, undiscovered talents in the UK. They wrote the Jesse Owens biopic Race. We’re hopeful for Berlin for that. Their range is incredible — they’ve just written Circle Of Treason at Focus Features, which is about the two women who took down one of the CIA’s biggest moles, Aldrich Ames. Christian Contreras is an American actor-writer living in London. His script LAbyrinth is being packaged now, and he came out about eight months ago to pitch an idea called Principia, a sort of Isaac Newton detective-type tale. He sold that for six figures to Warner Bros.

Is the demand for UK-originated content growing in the US? JS There has always been that association of British writers and film-makers with elevated content. That’s now been crossbred with a global access to every piece of content that you could want. MR I think the biggest headline is that creativity and talent know no borders. JS There’s something exciting and challenging about breaking a voice in the States. Nothing beats the face-to-face meeting so we’ve tried to pick the right time for our clients to come out here and plan the best strategy for them.

How about the rise of Matt Charman? MR We’re hopeful Patriot’s Day with Peter Berg will shoot next year. He is writing a pilot called Lethal at CBS. Carl Beverly and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones are producing.

Who are the UK names you have recently signed? JS The writer Charles Cumming is one of the premier spy novelists in the world right now. We’ve worked with CAA to help bridge him into the feature space,

What’s the biggest challenge facing management companies today? MR There’s a very blurred line between management and production. Clients want to know that their agenda is their s manager’s agenda. ■

SPOTLIGHT WWE STUDIOS

‘A wider audience will look at a movie like The Call and not realise there’s a guy from WWE in it. So the movies have to come first’ Michael Luisi, WWE Studios

Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery

Wrestle mania

President Michael Luisi has expanded WWE Studios’ roster beyond its typical action fare to include animation and indie pick-ups. Jeremy Kay reports

A

n animated Scooby Doo feature and Oculus may not seem the most obvious stablemates, but they share genealogy. Both productions arrived on screens bearing the mark of WWE Studios, the Los Angeles-based producer-financier that for the past four years has been quietly building a name for itself. The portfolio is a little more catholic than one might expect from a film division offshoot of global brand WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). Since Michael Luisi arrived as president in 2011, the former Miramax and Disney executive has nurtured the company’s ability to cast its net widely and be opportunistic. “I grew up with the brand when I was a kid and went to see matches in Madison Square Garden,” says Luisi. “This gave me a chance to refocus on what it had become.” The executive did his due diligence and was inspired by what he saw: half a billion dollars in annual revenue, number one shows on networks, more than 500 million socialmedia follows… the list went on. “The movie business made great sense to them and was a great brand enhancer,”

he says. “The Rock [Dwayne Johnson] was starting to hit his stride in film, and since then you’ve seen people like Dave Bautista and John Cena. I saw an opportunity to develop and nurture talent and have them cross over. “But what I thought was really holding them back was they were making a certain type of movie starring a WWE talent in the lead role,” he adds. “I felt that was a narrow way to execute in the movie business.” It meant scouring for high-grade screenplays that could result

28 Screen International at AFM November 6, 2015

in a quality production with possibly a WWE superstar in a supporting role. “[A wider audience] will look at a movie like [Halle Berry thriller] The Call and want to go see it and many of them will not realise there’s a guy from WWE in it [David Otunga]. So the movies have to come first.” Luisi also pulled WWE Studios out of distribution; previously it used Samuel Goldwyn for theatrical while Vivendi was the home entertainment partner. These days the emphasis is on the

producer-financier role, such as the Erebus Pictures joint venture with Kiss cofounder Gene Simmons (see below). Leveraging the platforms and fanbase to assist marketing efforts is crucial, and any P&A split on a film would most likely come on the smaller titles that WWE Studios gets involved in. The milestone year was 2013. While Dead Man Down fell below expectations via FilmDistrict, it was the first wide release after Luisi came on board and served as a statement of intent. The Call, meanwhile, opened via the Sony fold and was the first in-house production to achieve what Luisi calls “significant” success ($68m worldwide). Besides obvious action-oriented titles such as The Marine 4: Moving Target, Vendetta and 12 Rounds 3: Lockdown, WWE Studios acquires films even if they do not contain a WWE star. It partnered with Relativity on the 2013 Toronto pickup of Mike Flanagan’s horror Oculus and Luisi was back at the festival last month for a private buyers’ screening of the director’s micro-budget Hush. A collaboration with Warner Bros on Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery, one of the studio’s biannual direct-to-home releases, allowed the WWE superstars to hone their voice work. More importantly, the film is understood to have outsold the live-action titles by a three-to-one margin. That kind of return could keep the muscle-bound cohorts of WWE Studios s in voice work for many years to come. ■

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO GENE Gene Simmons has thrilled rock fans for Vendetta (above); decades and wants to do the same for The Marine 4: Moving Target followers of a certain type of cinema. “The basic premise is to do higher-end horror, sci-fi and genre films,” says the Kiss co-founder of his WWE Studios joint venture Erebus Pictures. A three-film deal starts this autumn with Temple, while Voltage Pictures handles international sales on the slate. “It’s too easy to show a close-up of a knife opening up a human body… that’s the lowest common

denominator. Some of my favourite films never showed a knife entering a human body. Psycho comes to mind.” Simmons readily cites Nosferatu, The Most Dangerous Game, Poltergeist and The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari as other genre films he holds dear. Erebus will make elevated genre for a price via the independent funding model of equity investment, tax incentives and international sales.

“Then you pay attention to the important stuff, which is how good is the script and can the action express itself in a way that’s believable,” he says. That is just how the man known occasionally on stage as The Demon wants it — so long as the gore quotient stays low. “I can’t even watch a chicken get killed,” says Simmons.
