Memento flags French rights for Panahi’s Taxi Exclusive look at By Way Of Helena

Helena rides to Germany BY ANDREAS WISEMAN

WestEnd Films has sold Western By Way Of Helena to Weltkino for German-speaking territories. Liam Hemsworth plays a Texas Ranger investigating a series of unexplained deaths in a town called Helena. Co-stars include Woody Harrelson, Alice Braga (Elysium) and Emory Cohen (The Place Beyond The Pines). Directed by Kieran Darcy-Smith, the drama was written by Matt Cook who executive produces alongside Nathalie Marciano. The film was developed by David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, who are producing it under their Mandeville Films banner. Atomic Entertainment’s Adam Rosenfelt and Maureen Meulen are producing alongside Mandeville, and are also financing. WestEnd’s EFM slate also includes Benedict Andrews’ Blackbird, Jeremy Saulnier’s crimethriller Green Room and Tomm Moore’s Song Of The Sea. Weltkino is the distribution outfit of Kinowelt founder Michael Kölmel and producer Dietmar Güntsche.

Paris-based distributor Memento has signed a deal with Celluloid Dreams for French rights to Jafar Panahi’s Golden Bear contender, Taxi. It is his third feature since the Iranian authorities banned him from making films at the end of 2010, following This Is Not A Film and Closed Curtain, which was in Berlinale Competition in 2013. Panahi was also banned from travelling and giving interviews in his 2010 sentence so was unable to attend yesterday’s premiere of Taxi. In his latest film, Panahi has circumvented the ban by turning a

Dutch-German co-pro boost By Geoffrey Macnab

The long-awaited Dutch-German co-production treaty is to be ratified at the Berlinale today. Dutch minister for education, culture and science Jet Bussemaker, and German ministers Monika Grütters and Andreas Görgen will sign the treaty. The German Federal Film Board (FFA) and Netherlands Film Fund (NFF) prepared the treaty, which will boost co-production and the bilateral development of the film industry and film culture in both countries. FFA executive managing director Peter Dinges told Screen: “It is our goal to stimulate the intercultural awareness in film-making between our two countries. A Dutch-German children’s films co-development fund has also been backed by NFF with German partner Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM).

Bustamante keeps it in family BY ANDREAS WISEMAN

Ixcanul (Ixcanul Volcano) director Jayro Bustamante is plotting a return to Guatemala. The Paris-based film-maker, who makes his directorial debut with the drama playing here in Competition, told Screen: “Next I want to make a film about the relationship between a father and son, rather than a mother and daughter, as in Ixcanul. “It will be a more modern,

comfortable Guatemala than that of Ixcanul but will also reveal underlying chaos.” The director intends to reunite with a number of his Ixcanul collaborators on the as-yet-untitled project, including producer Pilar Peredo and cinematographer Luis Armando Arteaga. Barcelona-based Film Factory is handling sales on Ixcanul, which charts the life of a 17-yearold Mayan woman who lives on

the slopes of an active volcano in Guatemala but dreams of a life elsewhere. The 37-year-old director, who grew up in Guatemala, explained his motivation for making the film: “I wanted to shed light on the experience of Indian women who live in a country where the majority is discriminated against. Usually it’s the minority that is discriminated against.” » See ScreenDaily.com for more Vytenis Krisciunas

Pure Flix has faith in Do You Believe?

XLrator drives global

By Jeremy Kay

By Jeremy Kay

Pure Flix kicks off sales at EFM on Do You Believe?, its follow-up to the faith-based US box-office hit God’s Not Dead. Michael Scott, David AR White, Russell Wolfe and Elizabeth Travis produced Do You Believe? and Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon wrote the screenplay. It opens in the US via Pure Flix on March 20 on more than 1,000 screens. Sales chief Ron Gell screens Hope Bridge and Dancer And The Dame, which sold in Turkey (Sinema TV), Australia (Crossroads) and Germany (MoreFilms), and The Black Rider, which went to Sinema TV in Turkey. God’s Not Dead sold to Benelux (BBI), Portugal (Films4You), Poland (Revolution Releasing) and Germany (MoreFilms), while Camp Harlow has gone to Poland (Life Media), Australia (Crossroads) and Germany (KSM).

Barry Gordon’s XLrator Media continues to ramp up its global distribution ambitions with a production deal on three action thrillers from RNR Entertainment. XLrator will co-produce the slate, release in the US and oversee international distribution. Gordon is one of a small coterie of savvy players in US distribution who want to build a sustainable

model for films and avoid ‘statement buys’ that are liable to run out of steam after the first window. The move comes hot on the heels of XLrator’s similar pact for sci-fi thrillers with New Artists Alliance. Michael Hurst’s timetravel story Paradox kicks off the RNR slate and starts shooting in spring for a 2016 release. XLrator previously released Ironclad and Ironclad: Battle For

Blood in North America, which were produced by Rick Benattar, who runs RNR with Nigel Thomas and Robert Menzies. “We see this as an opportunity to expand our relationship with our existing partners like Netflix and Amazon and with some companies in key territories,” he said. “We have an informal conversation about creating a global releasing network.”

Landmine drama Kajaki: The True Story received its international launch at EFM with screenings at the market and British Embassy, which were attended by guests including military dignitaries. There was also a public screening hosted by Indiegogo. Metro International is handling international sales of the film, directed by Paul Katis. Pictured (from left) are guests: colonel Jose Abracos, Picard, colonel Richard Wakefield, Katis, colonel Zlatko Vehovar, executive producer Gareth Ellis-Unwin, colonel Wiebe Baron, colonel Gregory J Broecker and lieutenant colonel Uwe Brettschneider.

45 Years Reviewed by Mark Adams A gently devastating snapshot of a loving yet subtly fractured relationship in its twilight years, Andrew Haigh’s wonderfully performed 45 Years is an elegant and restrained film that dwells on how an apparently happy union can be tormented by an echo from the past. Delicate, thoughtful and moving, the film cements Haigh’s reputation as one of the leading lights of UK cinema, with him drawing out awardsworthy performances from his veteran leads, Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay. The film, which screened in Competition here and is set for release in the UK in the summer, is the follow-up to Haigh’s critically acclaimed Weekend (2011). Adapted from David Constantine’s short story In Another Country, 45 Years depicts the relationship between a couple in the few days before a party for their 45th wedding anniversary. Where Weekend was about passion and the prospect of new love, 45 Years focuses on how a bond of decades can still be threatened by irrational worries, jealousies and emotional landmines, despite best intentions all round. The notion of memories — and how photo-

graphs and imagery capture them — runs through 45 Years as this couple struggle to cling on to what held them together. Beautifully observed, gently amusing and often performed with emphasis on the small things in life rather than any major dramatic incident, its focus on retrospective jealousy is an unusual and intriguing one… and offers an absorbing story that comes up with some profound truths. Retired and living a pleasant existence, Kate (Rampling) and Geoff (Courtenay) share an easy bond. He reads, listens to the radio and always promises to finally fix their broken toilet, while she is busy taking their dog for a walk, pottering around the local town and preparing for their upcoming festivities. They have the easy verbal shorthand of a couple who know each other very well, but a letter from Switzerland throws an emotional bomb into their relationship. He receives a note that is a reminder of life before Kate. Authorities have finally found the body of Katya, his previous girlfriend, who died in a walking accident in Switzerland 50 years ago. There is no hint of foul play, but the contained and restrained Kate finds it increasingly difficult to deal with Geoff ’s emotional remembrances of Katya and his feelings for her (as she

puts it, Geoff “gets over-passionate about things”) despite the fact it all happened before they met. Kate’s initial response is measured (“I can hardly be cross with something that happened before we existed, can I?”) but she starts to fixate on slight changes in Geoff ’s behaviour; heads into their loft to look at slides of Katya; worries about what he will say in his speech at their party; and allows a vulnerability to take over. The story is set over a week and culminates at the party, where, with their friends gathered around them, Kate still has the look of a woman haunted by doubt and alone in her worries. Shot with an easy grace and a production design that reflects perfectly the lives of this ordinary English couple, the film scores well in all production aspects. A strand running through the story about them choosing the music for their party — they favour the likes of ‘Young Girl’; ‘Happy Together’ and ‘I Only Want To Be With You’ — subtly balances the romantic intentions of youth with the realities of a relationship that changes and is tested over the years.

Queen Of The Desert Reviewed by Mark Adams

COMPETITION

A lush and languid romp through the deserts of the Middle East, Werner Herzog’s elegantly mounted and at times deliriously beautiful film is part The English Patient-style drama (for its mesmeric locations and striking design) and part slushy Mills & Boon romantic tale (for its plodding melodrama and often dull dialogue). While enjoyable in parts, its episodic pacing lets down the real-life story of a bold and remarkable woman. The strong cast — Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson and Damian Lewis — go through the motions with stoical determination to look the period part, and while the core story of a fiercely independent and intelligent woman who feels at her happiest deep in the desert is an appealing one, Queen Of The Desert is weighed down by her love for two different men and an attempt to inject drama in the form of dispute for control of the region. As might be expected, Herzog comes up with some striking footage and enthralling visual sequences — though some of his camera movements feel clumsy — but this awfully big adventure lacks real dramatic drive and heads into bloated territory. Kidman gets to polish off her best English accent as the adventurous Gertrude Bell, brought up in a life of privilege but bored with the rituals of upper-class society. Her father arranges for her to stay at the British embassy in Tehran, where she soon falls for the limp charms of Henry Cadogan (a rather bland Franco, with a so-so English accent). But their romance is not meant to be, and before long she is roaming the desert, looking for peace under the open skies. Her journeys bring her into contact with a young archaeologist named TE Lawrence (Pattinson), before he finds fame as Lawrence of Arabia, and she drifts into a romantic relationship with major Charles DoughtyWylie (Lewis). Kidman is perhaps the wrong age now to play the strident younger Florence, but comes into her own as the slightly older woman at ease in the desert. She holds the film together but while her performance is impressive, it is a little one-note at times.

On paper, it looks like yet another Jafar Panahi exercise, outsmarting once again the Iranian authorities who have forbidden him from making films for the next 20 years. On screen, however, this is a delightful surprise, and though it is even more minimalistic than his last two illegal exports, This Is Not A film and Closed Curtain, it is also more mature, better calibrated and — at risk of annoying arthouse patrons who often hate this term — more entertaining than the other two. Following in the footsteps of Ten by Abbas Kiarostami, Panahi’s film is confined to a yellow cab travelling through Tehran, with two revolving digital cameras fixed on the dashboard, pointed most of the time inside the car but occasionally turned around to the street. The film is built around Panahi, who drives the cab himself, mostly listening to his passengers as he crosses the city from one end to the other. In the process he offers a priceless cinematic lesson, proving once again that if you know what you want and how to express it, the whole mystical paraphernalia of film-making and its inflated budgets is not really necessary. In a series of apparently unrelated vignettes, Panahi’s customers argue about anything from the ease of dispensing capital punishment in Iran to the flourishing black market in illegal videos. Naked greed is revealed at one point and deep human compassion at another, while a little girl is introduced as the driver’s niece and shamelessly steals her scenes with a sharp wit and an even sharper tongue. More than ever before, Panahi’s composite picture of contemporary Iranian reality puts on a satirical shape, but the melancholy smile on the driver/director’s face is more eloquent than any piece of dialogue. How this film was made, cut and put together; how it was sneaked out of Iran; and why the regime there is not blowing a fuse are questions that remain to be answered. The film, however, stands on its own merits. And if you are wondering about the missing credits, Panahi prefers not to quote any other names beside his own. No need to explain why.

Prince Reviewed by Jonathan Romney Teenage traumas in the hood, with gangstas hovering, inaccessible love objects to be won and the odd pair of luxury sneakers — it all adds up to an increasingly familiar format in European urban realism. But we are not used to seeing it in a Dutch context, nor with the kind of skewed comic approach of Prince (Prins), an enjoyably idiosyncratic debut feature from Sam de Jong. Carrying the production stamp of modish street-culture brand VICE, Prince recounts the coming-of-age travails of a Dutch-Moroccan teenager. That the setting is not the toughest estate but a neat, seemingly bland part of Amsterdam contributes to the charm. Ultimately not quite distinctive enough for serious export prospects, Prince should find appreciative audiences at festivals, especially with a youth constituency, after opening Berlin’s Generation 14plus strand. The young hero is Ayoub (Elasri), son of separated parents — a Dutch mother (Elsie de Brauw) and a Moroccan dad (Chaib Massaoudi) — seriously on the skids. Hanging out with his friends and avoiding his older tormenters, Ayoub dreams of Laura (Sigrid ten Napel), a blonde teen goddess who seems to glide in slow motion. Gauche Ayoub stands little chance of impressing her — unless, he thinks, he can get in with manifestly deranged

local dealer Kalpa (the larger-than-life rapper Freddy Tratlehner). At first, associating with Kalpa gets Ayoub what he wants — notably a pair of fancy trainers — but predictably, that is where his troubles begin. Prince benefits from an appealing stylistic disconnect, as it moves from a base note of detached minimalism to a more intense, almost surreal register, although this eclecticism finally dilutes the film’s coherence. In the opening sequences, de Jong establishes a singular tone, with static compositions, symmetrical framing and heightened rhythmic editing that suggest a cinematic cartoon strip, with touches of Aki Kaurismaki’s deadpan lugubriousness and Napoleon Dynamite’s absurdism. Later,

though, de Jong moves into a more expressionistic mode — for example, with a conventionally dynamic sequence of a gang beating. Elsewhere the film offers a gently dreamlike touch — when Ayoub acquires the crown that makes him the titular ‘prince’ — and even outright Lynchian weirdness for the scenes with Kalpa, who presides over his own private meat freezer. The film is strongest when it lets its cast, notably the younger non-professional members, to imprint their not-so ingratiating personalities on the action. Elasri in particular is a natural, with Ayoub believably turning from twerp to dysfunctional creep before excavating his inner nice guy.

episode is never mentioned, neither is the fateful Last Supper, while the Crucifixion takes place off screen. But then, Ameur-Zaimeche is not interested in an actual plot, he seems to be keener on reviving incidents in their primitive settings. When these are put together they show imperialist conquerors crushing idealist natives to prevent further risk to the security of the occupiers. Not that the religious establishment is treated any better. Any deviation from the holy traditions is considered an attempt against its authority, any cunning ploy or unscrupulous device should be used to put down such heresy. And in doing so, these so-called Men of God are willingly lending a hand to the same imperialists they claim to abhor. Shot in spectacular desert landscapes (remarkably similar to the Judean Desert near Jerusalem but deprived of any sets that might give an idea of the historical city) with Biblical robes and togas, mostly tattered when not adorning the Roman conquerors, the script is bound to raise objections for the liberal treatment of its characters and of its subject, all of them freely manipulated for the benefit of Ameur-Zaimeche’s dialectic approach. Without even one single charismatic person-

ality around, no character stands out in their own right and the whole affair remains stuck on a theoretical level. No wonder the most significant scene is the trial of Jesus Christ (Nabil Djedouani), at the end of which he is sent to his death in the best interests of the Roman Empire.

Story Of Judas Reviewed by Dan Fainaru Religion is put on hold for a while in this historical pageant, and the story of the Crucifixion becomes a political parable about Jesus being sent to the cross not because of his teachings and miracles, but for being capable of fomenting an eventual rebellion that might disturb the Roman occupation of Judea. It’s not a terribly original approach, but the subject mater is timely. Shot in what purports to be a replica of the places that served as the background to the actual events, and spinning out some of the familiar tales, without attempting to tell a fully coherent tale, this dry, minimalist version of the New Testament may well travel to some arthouses in search of esoteric items, but with Arte France’s involvement in the production, it is sure to get TV exposure. Though titled Story Of Judas (Histoire De Judas), the character that has become the eternally infamous icon of betrayal never really occupies centre stage here and when he does (played by director Rabah Ameur-Zaimeche himself ) he has nothing to reproach himself over. He is a devoted, faithful follower of the Rabbi from Nazareth, a sort of composite picture of all his apostles. The 30 pieces of silver

The Fire Reviewed by Lee Marshall

Love & Mercy Reviewed by Allan Hunter A more conventional biography of Brian Wilson would attempt to shape the vast arc of his troubled life into a pleasing mixture of highs and lows, tears and triumphs. Love & Mercy takes a different, more impressionistic approach, focusing and contrasting two key periods from his life: the rich success and optimism of the Beach Boys’ best years in the 1960s, then later when an unstrung Wilson was far from the limelight and at the mercy of a domineering, unscrupulous therapist. The result lacks some of the fine detail and context one might have liked but still emerges as a weighty, fitting salute to Wilson’s restless creativity and a touching celebration of the love that would prove to be his salvation. Lingering affection for the Beach Boys’ joyous soundtrack to the sun-kissed promise of a 1960s summer, respect for Wilson’s journey to hell and back and impressive performances from Paul Dano and John Cusack should all help to generate sufficient audience interest for a solid theatrical life, though Love & Mercy lacks the more obvious crowdpleasing elements and carefully packaged emotions of a Ray or a Walk The Line. The one thing Love & Mercy nails is the importance of the music and numerous scenes testify to Wilson’s painstaking devotion to creating the most original and multilayered pop music the world had ever heard. In the more contemporary scenes, a middle-aged, medicated Wilson (Cusack) meets car saleswoman Melinda (Elizabeth Banks) and starts a romance that places him on a collision course with Eugene Landy, the controversial therapist who has been appointed Wilson’s legal guardian and taken control of the musician’s life. Paul Giamatti’s sinister turn as this blustering, manipulative figure makes Landy one of the villains of the film along with Wilson’s callous father who seems determined to crush the spirit in both the boy and the man. Wilson quietly reveals he has almost no hearing in one ear because of the beatings he received as a child. A doughy Dano catches the look and spirit of Wilson with his wide-eyed stare, sudden passions and relentless drive to give expression to the voices in his head. He also sings beautifully. Cusack doesn’t look like the older Wilson but does a fine job with a character defined by his secret smiles, broken sentences and sweaty paranoia.

The postponement of a young couple’s appointment to sign the contract on a new apartment acts as a catalyst for catastrophe in Argentinian director Juan Schnitman’s claustrophobic relationship drama. The handheld camera and a preference for long, roving takes pile a deal of responsibility on the shoulders of leads Pilar Gamboa and Juan Barberini, but they acquit themselves well in two intense performances. Co-produced by Diego Dubcovsky’s BD Cine — something of an Argentinian indie stamp of approval — The Fire (El Incendio) has the dramatic bone structure to appeal to arthouse audiences, though the could-be-anywhere urban setting and difficulty in selling a story about an ordinary couple going through a rough patch will likely confine it to home territory, festivals and some limited play in Latin American speciality venues and seasons. Opening nicely with what seems an overhead still of Lucia (Gamboa) and Marcelo (Barberini) sprawled in bed — until the still comes to life — The Fire wastes little time sketching in the passionate, petulant relationship between the young live-in couple before waltzing us through their visit to the bank to withdraw a stack of money. They need it to pay the balance on the flat into which they are about to move, just five blocks from their current home; but as they drive to the appointment, the notary rings to tell the nervous duo the buyer wants to reschedule for the same time the next day. Around the crisp wads of pesos the couple must hold reluctantly, tensions flare and break out into rows. Marcelo resents the fact Lucia’s father is helping them to buy the new place; Lucia resents his resentment. She works in a restaurant, where the macho kitchen camaraderie has a nasty edge; he is a schoolteacher, threatened by the parents of a violent pupil. The film is so laconically edited and sparing with explanations that it takes a while to get the clever game it is playing with the spaces people live in and pigeonhole each other: from the couple’s boxy apartment, the bank vault and their cramped car, to the boxes that are ready for the removal men, or the shoeboxes that are used to hide the cash and, unexpectedly, a gun.

INTERVIEW Woody KIM

What’s NEW Woody Kim, CEO of NEW, talks to Jean Noh about the company’s track record of local hits and its multi-media ambitions with fresh investment

I

n the past few years, independent investor-distributor Next Entertainment World (NEW) has been giving conglomerate-affiliated majors in South Korea such as CJ and Lotte Entertainment a run for their money. Established in 2008, NEW has specialised in mid-range budget choices of projects sometimes passed over by other companies. It has shaped these projects into hits such as 2013’s top film Miracle In Cell No. 7, which saw 12.7 million admissions locally; and The Attorney, which attracted 11.3 million admissions, according to the Korean Film Council. In October 2014, NEW got a $53m investment from China’s Huace Film & TV and in December, the company had a successful IPO. With a mergers and acquisitions background started at Samsung, CEO Woody Kim started working at Orion Group (parent company to Showbox/ Mediaplex) in 1996, where he helped acquire and develop cable network OCN and multiplex chain Megabox Cineplex. He was made executive director at Megabox in 1999. “It was a joint venture with Loews, which was owned by Sony. I learned everything to do with running a theatre, starting with popping the popcorn. Back then, Korea only had the Gangbyeon CGV [in terms of multiplexes]. When we first opened the COEX Megabox in 2000, it was the largest multiplex in Asia, with 16 screens and 4,500 seats,” he says. After four years, Kim was appointed CEO of investor-distributor Showbox/ Mediaplex, where he oversaw top boxoffice hits such as Taegukgi, Welcome To Dongmakgol and D-War. By this time, he had been bitten by the film industry bug. “I realised working in the mediarelated field is my lifelong calling,” he says. “Media, including films, can convey a positive and happy message to society,” he adds. So when his conglomerate bosses asked him to leave the film sector and handle games, he declined. “I had to make a choice. I left the company and set up one of my own. Thankfully, a few employees left with me and we’ve been able to grow a lot in six years,” he says. Unlike rivals such as CJ, Lotte or Showbox (which sold the Megabox chain to Macquarie in 2007, but still remains part of the Orion Group), NEW has no

parent or sister companies to support it with vertically integrated businesses. The independent famously started out with $1.83m (won2bn) of capital — slightly less than the budget of an average-sized film in Korea. “Once you leave a conglomerate, everything becomes more pressing and urgent. We were more passionate. We had a small pool of human resources and had to put everything into each and every film project we chose,” he says. Acting independently NEW distributes 15 to 20 films a year, of which eight to 10 are Korean productions. “We deal with fewer films, but our success rate is higher. This business is fundamentally about the power of content, and what’s most important is what kind of content you’re going to deal with and how. I’ve always operated on the opinion that films have to be entertaining, that they should be able to communicate with the public,” he says.

26 Screen International at Berlin February 7, 2015

Asked how he chose projects such as criminal thriller New World, which saw a solid 4.6 million admissions in 2012 and was one of the projects that made the local film industry take notice of NEW, he says: “Other places had turned down the script, but we got along very well with the production company. They reflected our concerns about budget and characters in the film, and we took care of the resources and distribution methods they had been concerned about. In this way, we came up with a very new, NEW-ish kind of film that you couldn’t see elsewhere. “There are things conglomerates have trouble approaching culturally, but that we can do freely. We can concentrate more and talk more with the production companies and that is reflected in the films,” he says, addressing a common complaint among Korean film-makers that they could be involved for years with a conglomerate representative who could suddenly be deployed elsewhere in the group. “This is why we have been able to work successfully with more new directors on films like Troubleshooter, Hide And Seek, Hello Ghost and The Attorney,” he says. “Films like Kim Ki-duk’s Pieta, which won Korea’s first Venice Golden Lion, or Yeon Sang-ho’s animations, are also things we can do that bigger companies have trouble with.”

In December 2014, South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission penalised conglomerate exhibitors for favouring their respective affiliates’ films, shifting the country’s film distribution paradigm. “In a way, it’s a good thing that we aren’t vertically integrated. Fair competition has been a big talking point for a while and now that it’s being regulated, the fundamental reasoning that your content has to be good will become even more important,” Kim says. As for NEW’s deal with Huace, he says: “They are number one in Chinese drama production, and we are good in films. It’s a win-win situation where we are sharing a dream.” That dream includes becoming a “small but meaningful media group”. Last year, NEW put on its first musical, December, directed by Jang Jin, and has started producing its first TV drama series. The company is also launching its international and ancillary rights arm, Contents Panda, here at EFM. SPAIN TERRITORY FOCUS ■ OVERVIEW ■ BOX OFFICE ■ HOT FILMS

Lessons learned pain is not an easy territory to categorise. In many ways, it is a cinema industry of contrasts — as Juan Sarda points out over the following pages, Spanish films have never done better at the local box office, yet producers are struggling more than ever to finance their films. Box office admissions are up, yet piracy is still rampant. There are hit films that are extremely local such as Spanish Affair and El Nino, and then Spanish directors who are telling very international stories in very international ways — in just two examples, Isabel Coixet’s new film, Nobody Wants The Night, set in Greenland, is a SpainFrance-Bulgaria co-production. And JA Bayona is telling a fantastical family story, A Monster Calls, in the English language with US actress Sigourney Weaver and UK Oscar nominee Felicity Jones. So there certainly isn’t only one model of success for Spanish film-makers. As our hot-titles rundown attests, 2015 is set to be a year with diverse and compelling productions. And any time there is a new Pedro Almodovar film, you know all eyes will be on Spain. Wendy Mitchell, contributing editor »

Spanish Affair

A torrid affair Why are some Spanish producers struggling when home-grown titles are enjoying unprecedented success at the local box office, asks Juan Sarda

T

he headlines cheer a record-breaking year for local films at the Spanish box office in 2014: two titles, culture-clash comedy Spanish Affair ($68m), directed by Emilio Martinez Lazaro and written by Borja Cobeaga and Diego San Jose — the biggest local film of all time — and Daniel Monzon’s thriller El Nino ($20m) helped propel Spanish films to a record breaking 25% share of the total market. Also performing well were Torrente 5: Operacion Eurovegas ($12m), Marshland ($7.8m), Mortadelo y Filemon Contra Jimmy El Cachondo ($5.7m) and Argentinian coproduction Wild Tales ($5.2m). But beyond the headlines, the news remains gloomy for Spanish producers. They are struggling to survive a 50% cut in public funding compared with four years ago as the country continues to suffer from a punishing economic recession. Although producers are rightly thrilled by

the 14% increase in cinema admissions and a 3% growth in ticket sales in 2014, they are disappointed the Spanish government has levied a 21% tax on cinema tickets, the highest in Europe. They are weary of cuts that have seen public funding for film fall to $40m annually and lament the collapse of public broadcaster TVE. “We have been lucky in a very difficult situation,” says Lazona Films’ Gonzalo SalazarSimpson, capturing the mood of the sector. His credits include that huge hit Spanish Affair. “We didn’t shoot anything last year and we’re struggling to finance some of our most beloved projects. We will be shooting at least three films in 2015 but it’s not been easy.” Oscar-winning local producer Gerardo Herrero of Tornasol Films believes the government could do more to help producers. “We have been suffering real persecution from the government,” he says. “The situation is hard, not only because of the dramatic

drop in public funding but the downfall of TVE and ongoing rampant piracy. Unless something changes, producers are facing another year of struggle and the last three have already been terrible.” Piracy estimates in Spain remain among the highest in western Europe despite the introduction of tough anti-piracy legislation that came into effect in early 2014. But many believe illegal downloading of films has become endemic in Spanish culture. “Almost nothing has been done for 10 years,” says Fernando Evole, president of exhibitor Yelmo Cines, which operates more than 400 screens in Spain. “The new law is a good step but we’ve yet to see any results. The reality is it’s still very easy to see films online before they are in cinemas.” The number of films produced fell by 18% in 2014 and the average budget of a local film was $1.7m. This compares with $3.5m five years earlier. “You either do a $10m »

SPAIN OVERVIEW

Magical Girl

genre film backed by TV with a strong publicity campaign, or a very low-budget production,” says Herrero, of the choice facing Spanish producers. Few in the industry expect major changes or innovations to be introduced this year as the government prepares for the next general election in December. The 18% tax rebate for films shooting in Spain announced in June 2014 was met with resignation from many. Producers were hoping for a more competitive mechanism. Private financing remains an elusive concept as Spanish banks, saddled with a huge amount of national debt, are reluctant to Torrente 5: Operacion Eurovegas engage with the film sector. “It’s a suffocating situation,” says El Nino producer Edmon Roch, of the process of putting together budgets. His Ikiru Films is now preparing a new animation feature, Capture The Flag. Lorena Gonzalez, head of the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts, is acutely aware of the discontent emanating from the sector. Yet she tries to put a positive spin on it. “It is a very difficult moment but it can also be a great opportunity,” she ventures. “It’s a defining turning point that will lead to a better cinema industry.” From a creative point of view, Gonzalez’s optimism is not misplaced, and Spanish cinema is flying high artistically. On the festival circuit, Carlos Vermut’s Magical Girl won the Golden Shell at San Sebastian last September and Isabel Coixet’s Nobody Wants The Night opened the Berlinale on Thursday (see hot titles, page 38). Film-makers are being forced to hone their stories to appeal to local audiences, which means a focus on local stories and commercial success. “We had some opportunities to do the film in English but we really wanted to keep it very local,” says Roch of El Nino. Wild Tales “Even the way characters

talk is specific to Andalusia, where it is set. Both Daniel Monzon and his co-writer Jorge Guerricaechevarria spent time there. When you play the local ace, you have to be as specific as possible to give the film a definite personality that also makes a difference on the international market.” World cinema Of course, Spanish cinema’s key talents want to appeal internationally as well. Spanish writers and directors remain sought after throughout the world and Spanish producers are popular international partners. Some of this year’s highestprofile Spanish titles are shot in the English language featuring

international stars. These include Coixet’s Spain-France Berlin opener that stars Juliette Binoche and is backed by Elle Driver and Wild Bunch; JA Bayona’s A Monster Calls, co-produced by Apaches Entertainment with Focus Features, and starring Sigourney Weaver and Felicity Jones; and Alejandro Amenabar’s Regression, produced by Mod Producciones for FilmNation and The Weinstein Company, and starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson. “You can still do Spanish-language films with a maximum budget of $2.9m-$3.4m (¤2.5m-¤3m),” says Andres Santana of Aiete-Ariane Films, which has produced Coixet’s Nobody Wants The Night. “If you want to make a bigger film you need an international star and to make it in English, because it’s hard to find that money in Spain and you need to co-produce. Even then, it was a four-year struggle to make Nobody Wants The Night.” Obliged to invest 5% of their total income in film production, public broadcasters Atresmedia and Mediaset have become the most powerful players in Spanish cinema. Not only are their film production arms Antena 3 and Telecinco, respectively, prolific and well respected, but the marketing spend they bring makes the biggest difference. “The promotion they can give you is priceless,” says Roch, who produced El Nino with Telecinco Cinema. “They bring their expertise to every step of the process.” Ramon Colom, president of the producer’s association FAPAE, adds: “They were very upset about their obligation to invest in cinema, but now they are very happy because it makes for very good business. They are, right now, the biggest promoters of Spanish cins ema and we are thankful for that.” ■

SPAIN BOX OFFICE

Battle for the box office Spain has seen a box-office boom in 2014 but admissions were driven by discount ticket schemes. Distributors and exhibitors are looking for new solutions, Juan Sarda reports

A

t a time when admissions in many major European territories are on a downward trajectory, Spain saw a 14% increase in cinema-goers in 2014 compared with the previous year, as total admissions reached 87 million. Although far short of 2004’s record 140 million customers, the upswing is a crucial reversal of five years of plunging cinema attendance. Yet Rentrak records that gross ticket sales rose just 3% year on year, to $605m. One initiative — now in its sixth year — that has helped grow admissions but hurts the profit margins is a promotional programme called Fiesta de Cine, which sees Spain’s exhibitors offer heavily reduced ticket prices — at $3.25 (¤2.90), compared to a typical $7.90 (¤6.97). For the first time the scheme ran twice in 2014, once in spring and once in autumn; each event was three days and covered 95% of the exhibition market. In April, 1.8 million cinema-goers took advantage of the offer, followed by 2 million in October. Spain’s producers’ association FAPAE, distributors’ group Fedicine and exhibitors’ organisation FECE jointly back Fiesta de Cin. In 2014, the organisers also touted another discount scheme, Wednesday at the Cinema, again with tickets reduced by at least 50%. “We did some very aggressive campaigns to lower the prices but the margins couldn’t be tighter right now,” says

Fernando Evole, president of Yelmo Cines, which operates 400 screens throughout Spain. The industry’s profits are also being hit by the 21% tax on cinema tickets. “It’s obvious we cannot survive selling tickets at ¤2.90 but it has been good to remind people we exist,” adds Evole. Heavy hitters Local films Spanish Affair ($77m) and El Nino ($20m) both far surpassed expectations. Both were helped by heavy promotion on the channels owned by backer Telecinco’s broadcaster parent Mediaset. Evole says those results skew the overall growth. “A single film, Spanish Affair, has almost saved the year by itself. So it’s too soon to say we are on the recovery path and really nobody knows what’s going to happen in the months ahead,” he warns. US titles including X-Men: Days Of Future Past ($9m), Transformers: Age Of Extinction ($6.5m), 300: Rise Of An Empire ($9.2m) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($7.7m) all underperformed. Industry watchers suggest action-heavy Hollywood blockbusters may have suffered because of the lack of disposable income among young adults — who are either unemployed or in low-paying jobs — not to mention Spain’s infamous piracy problem. Spanish audiences responded well to a handful of international titles including French comedy Serial (Bad) Weddings ($6.5m), UK drama Philomena ($2.2m), Bille

‘Unless there are some serious legal punishments for online piracy, nothing will work’ Josetxo Moreno, Golem

August’s English-language literary adaptation Night Train To Lisbon ($1m), Pawel Pawlikowski’s Oscar-nominated Ida ($630,000), Italian comedy Viva La Liberta ($600,000) and Hayao Miyazaki’s animated The Wind Rises ($500,000). But overall, distributors are struggling. “2014 was not a good year for us,” says Josetxo Moreno, CEO of arthouse distributor Golem. “And I’m not very optimistic about 2015. The VAT on tickets has been the coup de grace for a sector deeply wounded by piracy and there’s no solution in sight. Unless there are some serious legal punishments for online piracy, nothing will work. The VoD market is growing but we are very, very far off its real possibilities.” Spanish distributors are more cautious than ever. “Every film has to be the film,” says Avalon director of distribution Enrique Costa. The company enjoyed success to the tune of $1m with Searching For Sugarman in 2012 but it had underwhelming results in 2014 with the likes of Magical Girl and Long Distance (aka 10.000 km). “Not long ago, people went to the cinema every week and you had to fill this demand. Right now you have to convince them they have to see your film for some very specific, important reason.” New films from some of Spain’s biggest directors are giving distributors cause for optimism in 2015. These include Alejandro Amenabar’s Regression, Fernando Leon de Aranoa’s A Perfect Day, JA Bayona’s A Monster Calls and Fernando Gonzalez Molina’s Palm s Trees In The Snow. ■

SPAIN HOT PROJECTS

A field of excellence A preview of some of the most-anticipated Spanish productions and co-productions of the year, from big-budget English-language dramas to Pedro Almodovar’s next women-centric tale. By Juan Sarda A Monster Calls

Nobody Wants The Night

Dir JA Bayona

Dir Isabel Coixet

After his international hit The Impossible, Bayona is completing his ‘motherhood trilogy’ with a film about Conor, a 12-yearold boy who tries to deal with his mother’s terminal illness by befriending fantastical beings. “It’s the kind of story the audience is eager to see and Hollywood doesn’t produce any more,” suggests Bayona. Sigourney Weaver and Felicity Jones lead the cast, which is adapted from Patrick Ness’s novel. It is set for release in autumn 2016 by Focus Features in the US and Universal in Spain, and is a co-production between River Road Entertainment, Participant Media, Lionsgate International and Focus Features, with Belen Atienza producing.

Coixet, who has been in Berlinale Competition previously with My Life Without Me and Elegy, landed the coveted opening night slot for this year’s festival. The drama, inspired by true events, is set in 1909 Greenland. Juliette Binoche plays Josephine Peary, whose encounter with a mysterious woman (Rinko Kikuchi) in the icy landscape changes her life forever. Berlinale festival director Dieter Kosslick says: “Isabel Coixet has created an impressive and perceptive portrait of two women in extreme circumstances.” The film is produced by Andres Santana’s Ariane & Garoe and Jaume Roures of MediaPro in co-production with France and Bulgaria. Wild Bunch France has French rights.

Four-time Goya winner Leon de Aranoa (Mondays In The Sun) has an international cast led by Benicio del Toro, Mélanie Thierry and Tim Robbins for his new film, set in an unspecified zone of conflict. The story follows a group of aid workers who try to remove a corpse that is poisoning a well’s water supply. Leon de Aranoa’s company Reposado and Jaume Roures’ MediaPro produce. WestEnd has already pre-sold to territories including France (TF1/UGC), Germany (X Verleih), Benelux (Wild Bunch), Switzerland (Praesens) and Israel (United King). The film is in post-production, and Universal is releasing in Spain later this year.

Box-office champion Molina (I Want You) reteams with actor Mario Casas for this adaptation of a bestselling Spanish novel. The story of tragic and forbidden love is set during the waning days of colonialism in Africa, as a young woman travels to Guinea. Popular local actress Macarena Garcia (Blancanieves) and Adriana Ugarte co-star. Palm Trees In The Snow is

Oscar-winning director Amenabar (The Sea Inside) returns after a six-year absence with Regression, a supernatural thriller based on the director’s original story about a man who is accused of abusing his child. Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson lead the cast of this intense English-language story set in 1990 Minnesota. Long-time Amenabar collaborator Fernando Bovaira of Mod produces along with Telefilm Canada. The Weinstein Company will release in the US in August; Universal has acquired Spanish rights. Contact FilmNation info@filmnation.com

Silencio Dir Pedro Almodovar Almodovar will start shooting his new film, Silencio, in September. The director of Talk To Her and Volver has revealed it will be a drama and a return “to cinema based on women”. “It will really knock audiences out and that’s something that brings me a lot of joy,” the director explained. Casting is now under way with Almodovar revealing he plans to cast actors with who he has never before worked.

The Spanish-language production is being produced by his brother, Agustin. Contact El Deseo eldeseo@eldeseo.es

Toro Dir Kike Maillo Spanish superstars Mario Casas and Luis Tosar lead this action adventure film set on the streets of Malaga, Andalusia. They play brothers pursued by the mafia, who try to escape their life of crime and save one brother’s daughter. The film will combine action sequences with Spanish cultural references. Barcelona-born Maillo won the Goya Award for best new director in 2011 for robot story Eva. Apaches is producing with Atresmedia Cine, Zircocine and Escandalo. Shooting began in Malaga in January and the film is set for an autumn release. Contact Film Factory v.canales@filmfactory.es

Truman Dir Cesc Gay Gay enjoyed international success with A Gun In Each Hand (2012) and he reteams with two of that film’s stars — Argentina’s Ricardo Darin and Spain’s Javier Camara — for Truman. Using the Catalan film-maker’s trademark mix of comedy and drama, Truman tells the story of a middle-aged actor who must confront a terminal illness. He reunites with his childhood friend to find a new home for his dog. Gay said: “It’s a blend of humour and emotion, irony and tenderness.” In post-production, the film is readying for an autumn release. Contact Filmax
