AFM 2014 has seen steady business on a number of indie packages, many of which came together at the eleventh hour, with plenty more on the horizon. However, market buzz has been dominated by a few must-have titles and a number of buyers have been left frustrated by the dearth of mid-range propositions. Hot sellers have included Bloom’s The Nice Guys, with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, and thriller Unlocked; FilmNation’s as-yet-untitled
Disney signs Sharks’ Papers
Woody Allen film; The Exchange’s Michael; Sierra/Affinity’s The Godmother; Lotus’s Replicas and The Crucifixion; and IM Global’s The Secret In Their Eyes remake. IM Global’s $65m Civil War drama The Free State Of Jones, set to star Matthew McConaughey also had tongues wagging. Above all, AFM 2014 will likely be remembered for the market launch of The Weinstein Company’s Quentin Tarantino Western The Hateful Eight, with Tarantino making a special appearance to
entice buyers. Lofty asking prices ($12m in Germany) did not deter would-be suitors with strong demand creating a ripple effect across the market as buyers have hung in hoping to secure the film and so been unable to commit resources elsewhere. International hot sellers include Pathé’s Florence, starring Meryl Streep; Wild Bunch’s Edward Snowden drama; Celluloid Dreams with Jacques Audiard’s new drama; and Protagonist’s diverse slate.

Sturlungar: The Viking Clan is being pitched as a 13th century Godfather-esque story, being developed as either a trilogy of feature films or a Netflix-style series. The project is now in development from Truenorth, which is known as a production services company working on major studio fare such as Noah and Oblivion in Iceland. The outfit launched its production division last year under Kristinn Thordarson. Fridrik Thor Fridriksson is also on board as producer. True North is in talks with
FilmSharks International has licensed comedy Papers In The Wind to Disney in a pan-Latin American deal. Guido Rud plans a work-in-progress screening at next month’s Ventana Sur market in Buenos Aires. Juan Taratuto will direct from a screenplay that The Secret In Their Eyes screenwriter Eduardo Sacheri has adapted from his own novel of the same name. Das Films has signed a deal with Beijing-based Yisang Media Investment to finance the $35m-$40m sci-fi Ice Moon Rising. Sriram Das and Steve Chicorel will produce the story about a return mission to Europa 20 years after a crew discovered predators below the surface of Jupiter’s icy moon. Production is set to commence in the third quarter of 2015.

Like Water Like Chocolate director Alfonso Arau is in development with Bagdad Café writer Chris Doherty on 1930s-set drama The Crime Of Love, about an illicit love affair between two Nazi officers. Carsten Lorenz is on board to produce the project, which is being executive produced by Mark Holdon with ARRI Worldwide in talks to handle sales. “I was looking for a great love story,” Arau told Screen. “Germany in the 1930s was such an intense period in history that I knew I wanted to set this love story then.” Arau and exec Mark Holdom are also developing a TV mini-series on the Spanish conquest of Mexico called Conquest Of The Sun.

The film tells the story of resistance fighter Georg Elser who tried to assassinate Hitler in 1939. Christian Friedel, Katharina Schüttler and Burghart Klaussner star. ARC hops into Barber’s chair By JereMy KAy
ARC Entertainment has acquired all US rights to Chapman Filmed Entertainment’s thriller The Barber, which The Little Film Company is selling internationally. Scott Glenn stars in the story of a father and son obsessed with a monstrous man who has devastated their lives. ARC has earmarked a spring 2015 theatrical and premium VoD release. Chapman alumnus Basel Owies directed the film from a screenplay by Max Enscoe. Chris Coy, Stephen Tobolowsky, Olivia Taylor Dudley and Kristen Hager round out the key cast. Chapman Filmed Entertainment’s Travis Knox produced and Bob Yari and William Immerman serve as executive producers. The Barber is the first to originate from Chapman Filmed Entertainment, the production company run through Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. “Basel Owies and Max Enscoe bring an extraordinary style and vision,” said ARC Entertainment’s Scott Moesta. “We’re very excited to be working with our partner and for the opportunity to expose The Barber to a wide audience.” Moesta negotiated the acquisition with Robbie Little of The Little Film Company.

The titles include Ben Younger’s Bleed For This starring Miles Teller and Aaron Eckhart in the story of champion boxer Vinny Pazienza as he recovers from a car accident.
