The ‘Wild West’ of China BY JEREMY KAY

Wolf Creek 2

Image paddles to Wolf Creek 2 BY JEREMY KAY

Wolf Creek 2 has found a US home after Image Entertainment swooped on rights at AFM. Darclight handles international sales. Greg Mclean returns to direct the sequel to his 2005 cult horror, starring John Jarratt as homicidal bushman Mick Taylor, who preys on backpackers in the Australian outback. Jarratt is back in the role and stars alongside Shannon Ashlyn, Ryan Corr and Phillipe Klaus. Mclean and Aaron Sterns cowrote the screenplay and produced with Helen Leake and Steve Topic. Wolf Creek 2 is set for a 2014 release. Mark Ward, Jess De Leo and Bill Bromiley brokered the deal on behalf of Image parent company RLJ Entertainment with Ben Weiss of Paradigm and Peter Nelson and Joel VanderKloot at Nelson Davis Wetzstein.

Cultural differences can make dealing with China feel like “the Wild West”, a senior Constantin executive advised attendees at the AFM Finance Conference. “We have done a couple of films in China and every time you branch out to a culture that’s very different to your own, you’re dealing with an entirely new population and it isn’t going to work the way you think it should work,” said Marsha Metz, senior evp, business

and legal affairs. “Deals are done on handshakes. We’re paper-intensive but it’s different there. It’s like the Wild West and it can be good if you’re willing to get your gun and go for it, but there are a lot of people crying on the sidelines.” The Weinstein Company’s evp strategic initiatives, investment and banking, David Hutkin, suggested that the rise of China as a market will create plentiful opportunities in the form of “two United States” and said India

would follow suit as a potential giant. Metz and Hutkin joined other seasoned financiers at the Fairmont for the ‘Building your global film finance strategy’ panel. The general consensus was that while banks and equity players have returned to the space, it is important for producers to secure distribution or a sales agent first. “Whatever distribution you have will dictate your capital structure,” said Metz.

Universal devours cannibal tale BY JEREMY KAY

Universal Pictures Entertainment has taken rights for the UK, Germany, Benelux and Brazil from Synchronicity Entertainment to horror comedy Cooties. Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson star in the tale of a teacher who battles child cannibals at a remote school. Cary Murnion and Jona-

than Milott directed Cooties and SpectreVision partners Wood, Daniel Noah and Josh C Waller produce with Steven Schneider, Tove Christensen and Georgy Malkov. Saw co-creator Leigh Whannell and Glee co-creator Ian Brennan wrote the screenplay and serve as executive producers. Synchronicity Entertainment

president Ruzanna Kegeyan negotiated the deal with Matthew Dysart from Sheppard Mullin for the producers and Jasper van Hecke and Felicity Harrison for UPIE. “Not since Gremlins struck a nerve have little monsters terrorised a town in a wildly entertaining take on the horror genre,” said Kegeyan.

Roadshow Films clocks Hours BY ANDREAS WISEMAN

Roadshow Films has picked up US and UK rights to apocalyptic thriller These Final Hours (pictured) from Celluloid Nightmares. Roadshow, which already had Australian rights, will sell the film on to third-party distributors in each territory. Producers are Brett Forbes and Patrick Rizzotti of Fortress Features. WME handles North America. Tom Rice and Ben Nearn from Sycamore Pictures will also be producing and arranging financing. The film follows a man who discovers the truth about his neighbour and what, or who, he is keeping in the cellar. Casting is under way.

Return of the high flyer Italian distributor and producer Stefano Dammicco has pulled together an impressive 15-film slate for his new company, Adler Entertainment, in just six months. Melanie Goodfellow reports

V

eteran Italian distributor and producer Stefano Dammicco admits to feeling exhausted in a phone interview from his house overlooking Lake Como in northern Italy, which he has escaped to for a well-earned rest over the All Saints’ Day public holiday at the beginning of November. He has good reason to be tired. After a six-year break from the industry following the sale of film distribution and production powerhouse Eagle Pictures for a reported price tag of $114m in 2007, 56-year-old Dammicco is back in business with the recently created Adler Entertainment. In the six months since its launch in Cannes, the company has put together an impressive 15-title distribution slate featuring David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars; Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups; Mortdecai, starring Johnny Depp; Ridley Scott-produced Soviet-era child-murder mystery Child 44; serial-killer thriller Solace, starring Colin Farrell and Anthony Hopkins; and the revived John Gotti biopic Gotti, starring John Travolta. “We are working on doing the Gotti world premiere in Sicily… I’m serious,” says Dammicco, ever the showman. “Films like Mortdecai or Solace really hit my personal sweetspot — they are ‘Stefano films’ if you like — but we’re aiming for a wide-ranging slate. Our line-up includes pictures aimed at a young public, studio titles and films that I wouldn’t necessarily define as arthouse, but rather with Oscar potential.”

■ 8 Screen International at AFM

The company will kick off its distribution operations with Paul Schrader’s The Canyons, which will hit some 150 screens across Italy on November 14, followed by the animation Free Birds, which will be released in 400 theatres on November 28. Dammicco has founded Adler with long-time Eagle Pictures collaborator Pete Maggi, and young entrepreneur Marco Colombo. The company has hired former Eagle Pictures head of theatrical Ernesto Grassi to oversee the line-up. The team is attending AFM. “Marco is really smart and on the ball. I see him as a future leader in this industry. He oversees the finances and strategy as well as the social media side of things, while Pete is looking after production and developing new projects,” explains Dammicco. “We are self-financed, which gives us an immense amount of freedom. It also means we can take a decision on an acquisition very quickly, in a matter of days. “The company is a start-up by definition but in reality it is the fruit of more than 25 years in the business,” adds Dammicco, who built Eagle Pictures into one of Italy’s most important film companies alongside brother Ciro Dammicco. “I can’t deny that I’d love to be 20 years younger but my enthusiasm and passion for the business are as strong as ever — it still gets my adrenaline running.” Adler unveiled its first line-up and some of its plans for the future ahead of the premiere of

Free Birds in Rome late last month, followed by a lavish party in the roof garden of the swanky Boscolo Exedra hotel. In a sign of how Dammicco’s Hollywood connections run deep despite a six-year absence from the market, FilmNation’s Glen Basner, Lionsgate’s Patrick Wachsberger and Relativity International’s Camela Galano attended the event. “They’re important figures in the business who I’ve worked with over many years, but they’re also great friends,” says Dammicco. “We don’t have an output deal at this time but rather a strong strategic relationship.” Italian guests include Venice and Rome film festival chiefs Alberto Barbera and Marco Müller as well as Rai Cinema CEO Paolo del Brocco and director Matteo Garrone. “The whole thing came together rather spontaneously. It was a fantastic evening. The theatre was full of kids eating popcorn. It reminded me of Toronto, which is one of my favourite festivals,” Dammicco says. Beyond US acquisitions, the company is developing a slate of four to five international productions and is open to acquisitions from territories around the world. Dammicco would also like to support Italian films with international scope. “We hope to open an office in London next year. It’s a key location, a crossroads between Europe and Asia. The market has changed, widened, and we can’t ignore that,” says Dammicco, whose producer credits under the Eagle Pictures banner included Save The Last Dance, Along Came A Spider and Chocolat. “There’s a lot more to come… this is s just the beginning.” ■

The Rise

Best Laid Plans

On the Rise The team behind UK production outfit MoliFilms looks for films with heart and credibility, and the new EIS-funded slate includes its biggest project yet. By Andreas Wiseman

‘‘I

t’s very difficult to get a low-budget, artistically credible but commercially viable British film away, unless you’re Mike Leigh or Ken Loach,” says Brad Moore, executive at UK production outfit MoliFilms. “And their films are not even lowbudget any more.” As the company embarks on its fourth production, Moore says: “We have picked films with heart and artistic credibility and we’re trying to build a slate of projects that have commercial legs and longevity… We’re getting films made without sacrificing to the gangster pound.” UK gangster films and artistic credibility have not necessarily gone hand in hand in recent years. But with three promising features under its belt and a diversifying slate, UK production outfit MoliFilms hopes to break the mould. The company has backed three films to date: David Blair’s drama Best Laid Plans, starring Stephen Graham and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje; Rowan Athale’s BIFA-nominated debut and Toronto 2012 hit The Rise (formerly titled Wasteland), featuring Luke Treadaway, Vanessa Kirby and Timothy Spall; and Mo Ali’s upcoming actionthriller Montana starring Lars Mikkelsen, Adam Deacon, Ashley Walters and Michelle Fairley. Each film has sold to at least 10 international territories and achieved solid UK home entertainment revenue, with Montana shaping up to be the most commercially successful of the three. Salt is screening footage here at AFM.

Taking the EIS path The company was set up in 2009 by Mark Foligno, former MD of post-production house Molinare, and city financier-turned-producer Moore. It recently

‘We felt the UK Enterprise Investment Scheme would provide a good bedrock for us’ Mark Foligno, MoliFilms

added company partner Gareth Maxwell Roberts — director of thriller The Mortician — and a stable of creative advisers including Song For Marion writer-director Paul Andrew Williams. The outfit — about to open a new London office — primarily funds its productions through the UK’s Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS), a UK tax relief for investment in small to medium-sized businesses. “EIS is a very good way of supporting start-ups,” says Foligno. “We felt it would provide a good bedrock for a company that wants to make $3m and below-budgeted, character-driven projects with commercial themes.” MoliFilms relies on a consortium of more than 100 individual financiers who invest in a slate of films: “Our investors come from all sorts of backgrounds,” explains Moore. “We try and find highnet-worth individuals who have a passion for film and who have some experience of being involved in start-up businesses. They invest in a slate of three films and we try to give them an experience in terms of getting them to set, events and screenings. It’s a hands-on shareholding in the company — it’s a lifestyle investment, to an extent.” But the company is not reliant solely on EIS: “We allocate some of our own equity on a film alongside another equity player, and maybe include a post-deal or a visual-effects deal,” adds Foligno. “We might look for mezzanine or gap financing above that. It depends on the film. And of course we add in the UK tax credit, which we’ve tapped on all our films. But the cornerstone of each film is the EIS equity.” Respected industry veteran Foligno, an executive producer on The King’s Speech and co-producer of Duncan Jones’ Moon, brings with him a wealth of contacts from his time at Molinare.

“Mark post-produced 175 films while he was at Molinare,” explains Moore. “He has an amazing network… Most of the smaller production companies working within the EIS structure don’t have the contacts that Mark has. They haven’t got 10 years at the heart of the business.”

Most ambitious project The outfit is now about to launch its second EIS slate, with grey-pound comedy Gran Theft Ortho a top priority. Written by UK TV presenter Nick Knowles with Jeremy Sheldon and John Miller, the script follows an elderly couple on a bank-robbing spree in the south-west of England after they are ripped off by a pension scheme. “We are moving towards shooting it in spring next year; it’s very well developed,” says Foligno, who describes the project as the company’s “most ambitious yet”, with an estimated budget of $8m. “It is a Full Monty for the period of austerity,” adds Moore. “The script really fights back. It’s uplifting, without a swear word in it.” Meanwhile, director Roberts is co-writing thriller Keller, about a disgraced New York City cop who becomes embroiled in a murky underworld when he arrives in London to repatriate the body of his recently deceased young son. “It’s a noir thriller,” says Roberts. “It’s in the £2m£3m [$3.2m-$4.8m] range, trying to replicate the Luc Besson/EuropaCorp model.” MoliFilms’ own model is taking shape; the next few films will confirm it. “We are evolving. If you don’t change you don’t survive, so we’ve adapted to the landscape,” concludes Roberts. “Fundamentally we just want to make good British films, whatever s the genre.” n

FEATURE FOX STAR STUDIOS

Indian audience still also demands big stars and upcoming Fox Star productions include Tigmanshu Dhulia’s thriller Bullett Raja (set for a November release), and Sajid Khan’s comedy Humshakals (June, 2014), both starring Saif Ali Khan. They will be followed in October, 2014 by one of Bollywood’s most hotly anticipated releases — Bang Bang, a Hindi version of Fox’s Knight And Day and starring Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif. The studio is also financing Anurag Kashyap’s period drama Bombay Velvet, starring Ranbir Kapoor. Singh explains that both Jolly LLB and Bang Bang, although at opposite ends of the budget spectrum, represent the latest step in Fox Star’s local production strategy as both are fully fledged in-house productions.

The studio is also enjoying success through releasing Hollywood productions — with a gross of $18m, Life Of Pi is now the second biggest US release in India behind Avatar, also a Fox release. “What we’ve learned from Jolly LLB is that the market is changing,” says Fox Star Studios CEO Vijay Singh, who has steered the studio since its 2008 launch, working with Fox International Productions chief Sanford Panitch. “Audiences are more receptive and seeking differentiated content — and it’s up to us as a studio to anticipate these trends and deliver product in tune with the changing consumer.” But he adds that the

When the studio launched five years ago, it first built a pan-Indian distribution infrastructure through releasing Hollywood pictures; then acquired and distributed Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan, which grossed $45m worldwide, to prove to the local industry that a US studio could add value both in India and overseas. “Having done that, we knew we couldn’t build a sustainable business only through acquisitions — we had to get into production,” says Singh. The studio started with co-productions, where it identified producers with strong projects and access to talent, and fully financed productions while splitting profits with the producer. “We identified like-minded producers with whom we could have a sensible conversation about risk and reward,” says Singh, adding that a cable and satellite output deal with Star helps to mitigate risk for Fox Star productions. After learning through co-productions such as Dum Maaro Dum and Force, the next step was to scale up and become a more dominant player by building creative teams and generating and managing its own productions. “We wanted to find subject matter that we believe in, and become involved right from the script stage to putting together the director and cast, and then producing the film,” explains Singh. Jolly LLB is the first result of this move and enabled the studio’s development and production teams to cut their teeth on a lower-budget film that nonetheless required careful positioning and marketing. Produced and marketed for less than $2m, Jolly LLB was released on around 700 screens and grossed $8m. “If we’d released it four years ago, it would have struggled, and wouldn’t have been released on 700 screens because the infrastructure wouldn’t have existed,” Singh explains. The studio’s next in-house production is bigbudget tentpole Bang Bang, directed by Siddharth Anand (Anjaana Anjaani), which has been filming in Thailand and Greece among other locations. Fox Star took the basic concept of 20th Century Fox’s Knight And Day, starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, and adapted it for the local market. The studio worked on the script for two years with writers such as Sujoy Ghosh, who wrote and directed Kahaani, and Suresh Nair, who worked on Kahaani and D-Day. “We have been able to put together a project of the scale that four years back we would have drooled for,” says Singh. While moving more towards its own productions, Fox Star will continue with its co-productions. In addition to Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, co-produced with Phantom Films, the studio is also working on three further projects with Vishesh »

Films. It will also continue to produce across all genres and budget ranges to tap into the on-going fragmentation of the Indian audience. The studio has also made a splash in Tamil-language production through a partnership with AR Murugadoss that has yielded three hits: Engaeyum Eppothum, Vathikuchi and most recently Raja Rani, released in September. It also signed a twopicture deal with Tamil producer CV Kumar’s Thirukumaran Entertainment. “It has been a fascinating two years working with the Tamil film industry,” says Singh. “The quality of the Tamil writers is terrific, which gives us opportunities to do [Hindi] remakes, and the other thing they do really well is launch a lot of new stars.” Singh adds that Bollywood has a lot to learn from the Tamil industry, which works on very tight budgets and produces films that are deeply rooted in their local culture. “Bollywood lost that about five years back, in my opinion, by looking towards Hollywood for inspiration, and one reason we’re having a resurgence is that we’ve started going back to our local roots in the Hindi heartland.” Outside of India, Fox Star’s international team works with 20th Century Fox International’s distribution offices in the US, UK and United Arab Emirates and has been working to increase

exports to non-traditional territories; Stanley Ka Dabba was recently released in Japan by local distributor Medallion Media. While the UK market for Hindi films has plateaued, Singh says the North American market is encouraging: “The profile of Indian expats is very young and tech-oriented but still very rooted in India. The new cinema coming out of India works well in the US and blockbusters work too.” Back at home, Singh believes the domestic Indian market will continue to grow due to the country’s young population, growing multiplex culture and, despite current economic hiccups, increasing wealth. “Even though we have a billion people, the biggest hits are still only seen theatrically by around 35-40 million people. The same film showing on Star reaches an audience of 150-200 mil-

lion. The future lies in getting those 200 million people into theatres.” And he adds that Hollywood should also be able to take a bigger slice of this expanding pie. He explains that around 50 million people in India have a disposable income and go to see movies on a regular basis — of which only around 10 million will turn up regularly to see Hollywood films. “The growth for Hollywood will come when those 10 million go up to 50 million,” say Singh. “More importantly there’s a quiet seeding programme that’s happening with young kids who are growing up with Hollywood content that is being dubbed and shown on TV. Ten years from now, when these kids are adults, we’ll have a large body of people who will be ready to move into the theatre to s see Hollywood films.” ■
