Buyers drink in Russell Crowe’s Water Diviner Gallows Hill

IFC has picked up North American rights to Victor Garcia’s genre title Gallows Hill following a strong buyer response at a recent Los Angeles screening. IM Global handles international sales at the EFM. The film screens at the market tomorrow and stars Twilight actor Peter Facinelli, the UK’s Sophia Myles, Nathalia Ramos and Colombian model and actress Carolina Guerra, part of a large Colombian contingency. Gallows Hill was financed entirely within Colombia by television network RCN’s affiliate, Five 7 Media, which produced with A Bigger Boat and Launchpad Productions. Peter Block, David Higgins and Andrea Chung produced. Rich D’Ovidio, whose credits include The Call and Thir13en Ghosts, wrote the screenplay about a widower who takes his children on a trip to their mother’s Colombian home town. En route, the family is involved in an accident and take refuge in a secluded inn, where they free a girl who has been locked in a basement, and set in motion a terrifying sequence of events.

Universal Pictures International (UPI) has snapped up a raft of territories on Russell Crowe’s directorial debut, The Water Diviner, which eOne has also confirmed it will distribute in the UK, Canada and Spain. UPI cut deals with David Garrett’s Mister Smith for France, Germany, Scandinavia, Switzerland, Austria and Benelux. UPI will now also distribute jointly with eOne in Australia and New Zealand. Meanwhile Mars Entertainment has snapped up Turkish rights. In The Water Diviner, currently
shooting in Australia, Crowe plays a farmer who travels to Istanbul four years after the First World War to discover the fate of his sons, who were reported missing in the Battle of Gallipoli. There he forges a relationship with a Turkish

LevelK has boarded world sales for Silent Heart (working title), which reunites director Bille August with Ghita Norby, who starred in The Best Intentions. The cast will also feature Pilou Asbaek (A Hijacking), Paprika Steen, Morten Grunwald and 2014 EFP Shooting Star Danica Curcic. The story, written by Christian Torpe, is about a family gathering for an unusual weekend as the terminally ill matriarch (Norby) plans to commit suicide. The Danish-language film is currently in production for producer Jesper Morthorst at SF Film Production.

Paramount picks up Plastic Paramount has secured UK rights from Cinema Management Group to Julian Gilbey’s heist film, Plastic. The studio is understood to have committed to a wide 300-screen release in early May for the thriller starring Ed Speleers and Thomas Kretschmann. Plastic is inspired by true events and tells of a group of students who are forced to pull off a jewel heist in Miami after they

The film is the first out of the gate for Crowe’s Fear of God Films and is also the first of Hopscotch Features’ four films to have been picked up for multiple territories by parent company eOne. “I thought I had the best job in the world, but I think I’ve found a better one,” said Crowe. WestEnd Films has signed on to sell Tomm Moore’s anticipated animation The Song Of The Sea, the director’s follow-up to Oscar-nominated animation The Secret Of Kells. Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Pat Shortt and Jon Kenny are among the voice cast in the family animation, produced by Cartoon Saloon. The film is due for release late this year. Like Moore’s previous film, The
Song Of The Sea takes inspiration from Irish folklore, and centres on the legend of the Selkies — mythological creatures that are part-seal, part-human. Previous deals done with producers include StudioCanal for the UK and Ireland, Haut et Court and Orange Cinéma Séries in France, O’Brother Distribution in Benelux and Svensk Film for Sweden and Denmark. WestEnd will be showing footage here.
HanWay Films has newly boarded international sales on Occupant Entertainment’s Always On My Mind, from Rock Of Ages creator Chris D’Arienzo. D’Arienzo wrote the script and will direct Nick Nolte and Glenn Close in the music-based drama in which an ageing rock star (Nolte) succumbs to dementia while his wife (Close) is left to pick up the pieces of his hardlived rock ’n’ roll life. Occupant’s Joe Neurauter and Felipe Marino will produce in association with D’Arienzo’s Hana Akami Canning Co. CAA represents domestic rights. South Korean sales agent Finecut has announced a raft of deals led by thriller Haemoo (aka Sea Fog), executive produced by Bong Joon Ho. It has pre-sold to Wild Side Films for French-speaking Europe and Twin for Japan. Bong’s Memories Of Murder cowriter Shim Sung-bo is making a feature directorial debut with Haemoo, starring K-pop boy group JYJ member Park Yu-chun and Kim Yoon-seok from The Chaser. Currently in production, the film is scheduled for a late summer release in Korea. The Russian Novel director Shin Yeon-shick’s action thriller, Rough
Bac Films has finalised a string of deals on Paolo Virzi’s Italian boxoffice hit, Human Capital. Deals have closed with Brazil (Imovision), Canada (Axia), Benelux (Imagine), Switzerland (Filmcoopi), Austria (Filmladen), China (Champs Lis), Turkey (Filmarti), Poland (Against Gravity), Portugal (Film4You), Greece (StraDa Films), India (Star Entertainment) and eastern European TV (HBO). Rai has raked in more than $6.8m (¤5m) after four weeks on Virzi’s drama, in which the destinies of two families are irrevocably tied after a cyclist is hit by a Jeep on the night before Christmas Eve. The cast includes Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Valeria Golino, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Luigi Lo Cascio and Fabrizio Gifuni. Also on Bac’s EFM slate are Rotterdam selection The Quiet Roar, El Ardor, Run, The Strange Color Of Your Body’s Tears, which was recently sold to Strand Releasing for the US, and Fool Circle.

In Berlin, Finecut is also selling Panorama section title Night Flight, directed by LeeSong Heeil, whose previous White Night and No Regret also screened at the Berlinale. Finecut will also hold market screenings for Song Kang-hostarrer The Attorney — which recorded more than 11 million admissions in Korea — and the recent Rotterdam Tiger Award winner, Han Gong-ju.

Red Sea parts for Gridlocked
Wild Side has Nightmare

Red Sea Media has come on to handle international sales at the EFM on Cuba Gooding Jr thriller Gridlocked. Allan Ungar directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rob Robol about an ex-SWAT chief and his trainee caught in a training facility overrun by mercenaries. Bruno Marino produces with Geoff Hart and Cody Hackman from Canada’s Hackybox Pictures. “We are really going to be pushing the envelope in terms of the action,” said Ungar. “It will pack a punch. You’re going to see Cuba Gooding Jr like you’ve never seen him before. It’s going to be exciting.” Ungar previously wrote and directed the MMA thriller Tapped, which Lionsgate releases in May. Red Sea Media’s slate includes two films from Los Angeles-based FX specialists Hydraulx — The Seventh Tear, produced by Brett Ratner, and Chimera — as well as Jinn, Squirrels, Dawn Patrol, The Mighty Eighth and The Borderland.
Wild Side Films has acquired French rights from Content to Rodney Ascher’s The Nightmare. Content commenced sales on the documentary from the director of Room 237 at the American Film Market last November. The Nightmare was sparked by Ascher’s personal experiences and follows a disturbing investigation into demonic visions undergone by victims of sleep paralysis.
The genre title comes from the Preferred Film & TV joint venture between Content and Ross M Dinerstein and Kevin Iwashina, who produced The Nightmare with Glen Zipper. Content president Jamie Carmichael served as executive producer and represents North American rights with Iwashina. “It is a great testament to Rodney’s talent, combined with such an original and terrifying concept,
that two of the finest distributors in the business have joined the film early,” said Content’s head of sales, Harry White. Wild Side CEO Manuel Chiche added: “We are very proud to be on board Rodney Ascher’s new feature. We were very impressed by his vision on Room 237 and his huge sense of detail.” Content is also handling international sales at the EFM on Preferred Film & TV’s The Diabolical.

Umedia International has boarded Spanish animation studio The Thinklab’s family feature DEEP, which has a script by former Dreamworks writer-director Mike de Seve of Baboon Animation. Odin’s Eye spies thrillers by Sandy George
Odin’s Eye Entertainment (OEE) has acquired worldwide sales rights to supernatural thrillers from Australia and Spain. The first is 2nd Reign Of Night, the directorial debut of Antoni Solé, filmed in Barcelona. Solé is also producing alongside Loris Curci (Hidden In The Woods). The English-language film tells of an anthropologist who unwittingly resurrects an Egyptian god who plunges the world into eternal darkness. The film is in postproduction and OEE will be screening a promo at the EFM. Writer/director David Campbell’s Lemon Tree Passage is inspired by a media report about a stretch of road that locals say is haunted by the ghost of a motorcyclist. The privately financed Australian teen thriller is produced by Jeremy Ervine. OEE head Michael Favelle sold Middle East and North African rights to Shooting Stars on the eve of the EFM and is due to screen the film on February 8.

Much like the media sensationalism around the Amanda Knox trial itself, there have been misleading reports that Michael Winterbottom’s new film, The Face Of An Angel, is a Knox exposé. “It’s not a film about Amanda Knox,” Winterbottom says emphatically about The Face Of An Angel, being sold at the EFM by WestEnd Films. “The case in our film is a fictional case.” “Once people see the film, the talk about [Amanda Knox] will stop,” he adds. It is easy to see why there is some confusion, as Winterbottom acquired the rights to Angel Face:

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) is working on several events during the 2014 Berlinale. This evening, UKTI is partnering with the British Embassy, BFI and British Council (with law firm Brehm & v Moers) to host a panel discussion about Germany-UK coproduction at 5pm at the British Embassy, with speakers including Isabel Davis from the BFI, Lee & Thompson’s Reno Antoniades and producer Jens Meurer from Egoli Tossell Film. The panel is followed by a UK film reception. On Saturday, UKTI is partnering on the ‘We Are UK Film’ EFM reception and whisky tasting, followed by a reception with Screen International at the Hotel de Rome.
Ukrainian-based distributor 1+1 Media has taken all eastern Europe rights to Global Screen’s documentary Beltracchi — The Art Of Forgery. Reel Suspects passes TEST by Wendy Mitchell
Difret success French distributor Ad Vitam has snapped up world rights excluding North America on Ethiopian filmmaker Zeresenay Berhane Mehari’s Difret, screening in Panorama. It is
goes to Italy to study the aftermath of a high-profile murder case. He meets the US journalist (Kate Beckinsale) who wrote a book about the case, as well as an English student (Cara Delevingne) living in Siena working at a bar. While abroad, he starts to question his priorities with his own rocky family relationships, especially with his daughter. “None of the main characters of the film are directly connected to the case,” Winterbottom adds. “At the heart of the film, it’s about the tragedy of what it would be like to lose a daughter.” The film will now head into editing for delivery around August.

Panorama title TEST by Chris Mason Johnson is heating up sales for Reel Suspects ahead of its European premiere. Deals have been done with Peccadillo in the UK, KMBO in France and Mayfly in Poland. TEST is based on the director’s own experiences as a professional dancer. It stars Scott Marlowe as a young dancer living in San Francisco in 1985. The film won two prizes at Outfest; Wolfe and Variance will release in the US on June 6.
This year’s Berlinale features 29 films that are UK productions or have UK involvement. “Berlin Film Festival is one of the most important international film industry events and the European Film Market in particular is second only to Cannes for the British film industry,” said Daniel Rutstein, head of UKTI Germany. “While the key priority markets for UK films are the US, Brazil and China, Germany is the most reliable market in terms of advances being paid and the number of UK films released.” UKTI is a government dep artment that helps UK-based companies compete in the global marketplace, and helps overseas companies bring investment to Britain.
UK sales outfit High Point has added Dutch rom-com Heart Street to its EFM line-up. High Point renews its collaboration with Amsterdam-based producer 2CFILM after the pair joined forces on tech thriller App. Director Sanne Vogel’s debut feature stars Berlinale Shooting Star 2014 Marwan Kenzari (Wolf), Bracha van Doesburgh (The Domino Effect) and Tygo Gernandt (Süskind). It focuses on characters looking for love in a fashionable neighbourhood of Amsterdam. Producers are Edvard van’t Wout, Robin de Levita and Kees Abrahams. Just Film Distribution will release in the Netherlands on more than 100 screens in March.
Studio Hamburg kicks off release plan with Zulu by Martin Blaney
Jérome Salle’s action thriller, Zulu, the closing film at Cannes 2013, is to be the first release of Studio Hamburg Enterprises (SHE), which has expanded into theatrical distribution in the German market. The 50-50 joint venture between Studio Hamburg Distribution & Marketing and ZDF Enterprises had already been involved in the acquisition of international feature film and TV licences for release on DVD and Blu-ray, but had used other distributors in the past to handle the theatrical releases. Booking and billing on the May 1 release will be handled by 24 Bilder.

As usual, he sets his story within a unique imaginary world of his own creation, this time shifting his tale to a fictional spa town in the imaginary country of Zubrowska in the 1930s, with the key backdrop being the elegant Grand Budapest Hotel. performers) should help boost theatrical attention. Though playful in its use of storytelling — there are stories within stories, within stories — at the core of the film are the adventures of Gustave H (Fiennes), a legendary concierge at the famous hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa (newcomer Tony Revolori), the lobby boy who is to become his most loyal and trusted friend. A vain but lovingly loyal lothario who romances older female guests at the hotel, Gustave H (or Monsieur Gustave as he is simply known) also runs the place with precision, and takes a paternal attitude to young Zero. When one of his loves, the 84-year-old dowager countess Madame D, (beautifully played by a heavily made-up Tilda Swinton) dies mysteriously, Gustave and Zero hurry by train — and through a newly militarised border — to Schloss Lutz to be at her side. But when Gustave is bequeathed a valuable painting he soon finds himself accused of her murder by her son and presumed heir Dmitri (Brody). What follows is a caper that veers into Marx brothers territory at times, as Gustave attempts to flee; is imprisoned in Checkpoint 19 Criminal Internment Camp, managing to escape after befriending underworld figure Ludwig (Keitel) and having tools hidden in cakes delivered to him; and is assisted in flight by the varied members of the Society of the Crossed Keys (a brotherhood of concierges). He eventually finds his way back to the Grand Budapest Hotel — and to Zero — for an action-packed finale (and a blazing gun battle, an unusual sight in an Anderson film) on the sixth floor of the reputable building.
It will come as no surprise there is an awful lot going on in The Grand Budapest Hotel. It would be a fair comment to say the plethora of characters make for engaging distractions rather than aiding the flow of the film — the likes of Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Tom Wilkinson, Bob Balaban and Léa Seydoux all have minor, but amusingly telling, roles — but then this is what you get when you buy into an Anderson film. That, along with a love of trains, artfully interwoven animation and a rich sense of production design and costumes all help make this journey a playful and entertaining one. Fiennes is sheer fastidious perfection as the vain but rather generous Gustave M, and his on-screen relationship with Revolori is delightfully sustained as the pair embark on a series of strange but rather wonderful adventures. The film is also a tribute to the classic image of the bell hop (maybe the best since Four Rooms) and has a lot of fun with — and a good deal of respect for — the notion of how the clichéd ‘Grand Hotel’ functions. The framing device of having the story told by both Tom Wilkinson and Jude Law — as the author of a book about the hotel at different ages — is engaging rather than necessary but once the film focuses on Monsieur Gustave and the young Zero and their great adventure, it finds its glorious momentum and takes the audience on a swaggering and delightful grand adventure that is cinematic, exciting, funny and above all intelligently entertaining.

Cuban Fury Reviewed by Mark Adams Nick Frost proves he has the silky moves to top-line this amiable and rather enjoyable dance comedy, and while his regular on-screen comedy partner, Simon Pegg, does appear for a brief cameo, it is Frost and his engagingly sincere charm that carries the film. That and some delightfully staged salsa dancing that will leave audiences tapping their toes in appreciation. Frost and Pegg have, of course, starred in Edgar Wright’s comedy trilogy Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End, and while Frost has headed several television series (such as the BBC’s Hyperdrive) Cuban Fury marks his debut as fully fledged film lead and romantic hero. The film has the potential to click with UK audiences looking for a bit of alternate Valentine’s Day comedy — it opens on February 14 — while that casting of US actress Rashida Jones (from TV’s Parks And Recreation and feature Celeste And Jesse Forever, which she co-scripted) and Chris O’Dowd (from Bridesmaids) should aid international profile. As a 13-year-old in 1987, Bruce Garrett was poised to sweep the floor at the UK Junior Salsa Championship, where he danced with his sister, but after being attacked by cruel young bullies he puts his Cuban heels away, packs up his sequinned shirts and concentrates on an ordinary life. Some 25 years later, the adult Bruce (Frost) is an out-ofshape, emotionally inept worker who finds his road to selfpity interrupted when he meets his new American boss, Julia (Jones), a smart and funny woman who happens to have a passion for salsa. His attraction to her make him re-examine his dull life, though he still figures she is way out of his league (“She’s a 10, I’m a 2!”). But when his cocky co-worker Drew (O’Dowd) announces that he aims to make Julia his latest conquest, Bruce stumbles into action. With the encouragement of his loyal sister, Sam (the always excellent Olivia Colman) he approaches his old dance mentor, Ron (McShane), for a few top-up lessons. But Ron announces that Bruce has lost his dance mojo, and must take to the dance floor and learn to unshackle his inner dancing beast, regain his long-lost fleetof-foot fury and try to claim the possible love of his life. Of course the concept of the naturally chunky Frost taking to the dance floor is a funny one, and he is more than happy to poke fun at himself — as well as prove he has more than a few dance moves of his own — as his character has to make the transition from wannabe to salsa star. His on-screen relationship with the charming Jones is warm and easy, while rivalry with the engagingly sleazy O’Dowd — and especially their ‘dance off ’ battle in the office car-park — is one of the high points of the film.

Further demonstrating why he is one of South Korea’s most consistent film directors, the first English-language film from Bong Joon Ho (The Host), Snowpiercer, takes place on a perpetual-motion train that circles the Earth after a new ice age. It is an enthralling ride that never runs out of momentum as it cleverly examines the issue of social class in a thoroughly engaging, yet complex manner. Despite its dark tone, the film’s strong premise and a great cast including Tilda Swinton, Chris Evans, John Hurt and local talent Song Kang-ho and Ko Ah-sung will count internationally. Based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette, the film takes place on a train called Snowpiercer that is powered by a non-stop engine, orbiting the globe after the planet has succumbed to an ice age following a failed experiment to stop global warming. A class system soon evolves on the train, with an elite group inhabiting the front — led by a mysterious figure called Wilford — while the less privileged reside in the back in impoverished conditions. Determined to overthrow Wilford and take control of the train are a number of revolutionaries led by Curtis (Evans), who decide to make the perilous journey to the front to try to change their doomed fate. Bong has assembled the perfect cast, with talent spreading across three continents to reflect the global nature of the film and its narrative. Evans is difficult to fault as the young leader, while Hurt is perfectly cast as the older mentor and spiritual leader. Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner and Ed Harris, likewise, deliver their best, but it is Tilda Swinton as the second in command of the train with her thick but attractive Yorkshire accent who manages to rise above this stellar cast through her energetic and eccentric performance. Song and Ko, meanwhile, are natural fits in sizeable roles as part of the gang trying to take control of the train, a fact that further boosted the film’s box-office power in its home market of South Korea. Given the size, scope and unique nature of the project, this is somewhat unknown territory for a South Korean film on the international stage, and while it poses a marketing challenge for international territories in terms of whether to label it an arthouse film or a blockbuster, its prospects remain strong owing to a terrific final product.

Yves Saint Laurent Reviewed by Lisa Nesselson A concise and frequently touching real-life soap opera fashioned from very appealing soap, Jalil Lespert’s Yves Saint Laurent does an effective job of condensing two decades in the life of the justly celebrated clothing designer into a series of pithy vignettes carried along by genuine emotion and a superb central performance. Saint Laurent’s exacting standards, fashion instincts and pioneering designs (tuxedos for women, the Mondrian dress) really did radiate out into the wider culture to lasting effect. It would be difficult to overstate how completely Pierre Niney inhabits the title role, from the impossibly lanky fashion prodigy of 1957 to the filled-out and visibly diminished figure of 1976. The voice, posture, mannerisms, slightly twisted mouth — it is all here, and all in the service of one man’s unusual destiny. Although two women would not be caught dead in the same haute couture dress, there is no reason to believe the world cannot accommodate two YSL biopics. This one — the authorised portrait with the blessing and co-operation of Saint Laurent’s longtime romantic and business partner, Pierre Bergé, still going strong at age 83 (Saint Laurent died in 2008) — hit French cinemas on January 8 and opens the Panorama section here in Berlin. That means the production was able to use authentic locations and the garments so fetchingly displayed are the genuine articles. Bertrand Bonello’s version starring Gaspard
Infinitely Polar Bear Reviewed by Anthony Kaufman When we first see Mark Ruffalo’s Cam Stuart, frolicking through the New England countryside with his two daughters, he seems like the kind of funloving dad every child would love. But the wild eyes, mussed hair and manic energy cloak a disturbing reality: he is suffering from bipolar disorder. Innocent wackiness quickly gives way to nearly naked freak-out, and the next thing you know, his wife Maggie (Saldana) is huddled inside their locked car, sheltering the kids and terrified at what he might do next. Much like its protagonist, Infinitely Polar Bear wavers between joyous hijinks and disturbing breakdowns, and the more time you spend with it, the more it grows on you. While not as laugh-outloud funny as Little Miss Sunshine or as powerful as The Kids Are All Right, this accessible dysfunctional family comedy has enough heart and substance to potentially cross over into multiplexes in the US, and possibly around the world. Based on the life of screenwriter Maya Forbes (Monsters Vs Aliens) growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the 1970s, Infinitely Polar Bear follows the Stuart family as they try to survive during a period of both economic uncertainty and mental instability. With Cam out of a halfway house and ready to restart his life, Maggie embarks on finding a way to kickstart her career. After being accepted at

Ulliel and Jérémie Renier (as well as Léa Seydoux, Louis Garrel, Amira Casar and Willem Dafoe) is widely believed to be Cannes-bound. With fame an end in itself for so many modern personalities, the picture does a very good job of conveying Saint Laurent’s pathological shyness and frustration-fuelled temper when forced to deal with anything outside of concentrating on his design work. At his first solo runway show, Saint Laurent meets Bergé (Gallienne, outstanding), a wealthy businessman from a working-class background active in the ‘major arts’ (painting, sculpture, certainly not fashion). Bergé is as masculine and pragmatically no-nonsense as Saint Laurent is easily
overwhelmed and effeminate. It would seem that opposites attract. Through entrepreneurial chutzpah, Bergé raises the financing to launch the YSL fashion house and the rest, as they say, is history. Actors playing Jean Cocteau, Andy Warhol and other marquee names — Nikolai Kinski is entertaining as the imperious Karl Lagerfeld — appear at appropriate junctures, but the effect is not one of ticking off all the boxes. Laura Smet is quite good as Saint Laurent’s muse and creative sidekick, Loulou de la Falaise, as is Charlotte le Bon as pivotal early model, Victoire. The score by much-admired musician Ibrahim Maalouf is perhaps too emphatic in places, although few will mind.
Columbia Business School in New York, Cam is charged with taking care of the kids in Boston. It may be a risky proposition for an alcoholic manicdepressive chain-smoker who does not want to take his lithium, but he is up to the challenge. While the set-up may be formulaic, and there is plenty of familiar humour based on Cam’s struggles as a single parent, many of the situations are made unique. For instance, there is a fabulous sequence in which Cam strives to sew together a flamenco dress for his youngest daughter, made all the more funny and twisted as Cam is operating on a manic high. But the film relies mostly on Ruffalo’s committed performance. Alternating between highs and
lows, fury and fragility, aristocracy and hippie, the silliness of an excitable boy and the pathetic nature of a mentally unhinged man, Ruffalo makes an eccentric character likeable and credible, despite certain script choices that seem aimed at quick laughs rather than realism. For her part, Zoe Saldana displays effectively the immensely difficult choices that working mothers must face. Near the end of the film, one such scene builds to a crescendo of tears that is undeniably affecting. Indeed Infinitely Polar Bear exemplifies a kind of US indie dramedy that may be recognisable to audiences, with its touching journey as parents and children come of age together, but it still works.

On The Edge Reviewed by Mark Adams A Copenhagen-set The Fast And The Furious-style drama/ thriller but with a message, Christian E Christiansen’s impressively made On The Edge (Lev Staerkt) is a striking film with a fine young cast and punctuated by adrenalinehigh car-racing sequences shot with real panache. The film is in truth about fractured young relationships with a terrible accident causing the protagonists to dwell on what has happened to them. And while this is familiar fare, the street-racing footage — shot in Aarhus in Denmark’s Jutland, and not actually Copenhagen — gives the film energy and thrills, and could well help it appeal to savvy distributors. Best friends Martin (the effortlessly cool Jakob Oftebro, from Kon-Tiki) and Nicolaj (Melville) work as mechanics by day, but their real passion is illegal street-racing. They dress in snappy suits to steal a new-model Audi from a showroom, which helps pay for enhancements to the souped-up Ford Focus that Martin drives in a street race. Martin is loosely involved with university student Signe (Danica Curcic, who alongside Oftebro is a 2014 EFP Shooting Star), with whom Nicolaj is also smitten but keeps away from because of his friend’s involvement. But after a fight at a club, Martin steals a high-performance car and accidentally knocks down and kills a young woman. Wracked with guilt because he lies about his friend’s street-racing involvement, which helps reduce the sentence to manslaughter, Nicolaj seeks solace with Signe, a gentle soul who is taken with his kindness, but who also has her own reason for hating dangerous driving. When Martin is released the scene is set for the pair to confront each other, with Nicolaj having to eventually face up to the lies he has told both Martin and Signe. This is street racing with a moral message that — quite simply — dangerous driving is very bad and lives are lost. Yes, the film aims to be a blend of The Fast And The Furious and Crime And Punishment, but at its core is the familiar story of young love being torn apart by lies, mistakes and recriminations. The street-racing scenes are excellently shot by Christiansen (this is his seventh feature, having made The Roommate and Where The Devil Hides in the US), and while it features the expected engine-growling, tyre-screeching scenes, with the races started by the obligatory buxom beauty in a short skirt, there is also something pleasantly European about the action, as he does not try to completely copy the visceral pleasures of Hollywood’s The Fast And The Furious franchise. What also gives the film its honesty and energy are the fine performances from the three leads, who exude charisma and are clearly talents to watch.

Australian novelist Tim Winton’s 2005 collection of 17 interlinked stories, The Turning, is the rock-solid basis for this mini-festival of short films, each with its own director, writer, cast, crew and production company. Producer Robert Connolly’s vision was for each team to have total control of the interpretation and presentation of their segment. This means the central Lang family characters — Vic, Gail, Bob and Carol — are played by different actors in each of the stories in which they appear. This can be confusing — sometimes they can be aboriginal — but will be less of a problem if you have a programme to guide you. Also varied are the directorial styles — from dialoguefilled naturalism to voiceover memories and part-dreams. There is even a mute, studio dance segment, quite a challenge at the 150-minute mark. Crucially, there are many marvellous locations — vast plains, dripping swampland, impenetrable ranges, pounding oceans — the background to Winton’s acclaimed fiction over the years. Of the internationally known actors on show, Rose Byrne shines in a ‘trailer-trash’ portrait (in Claire McCarthy’s The Turning) very different from her usual work; Cate Blanchett and Richard Roxburgh play Gail and Vic dealing with his difficult mother on Christmas Day (Reunion, written by Blanchett’s husband, Andrew Upton, and loosely directed by fast-rising theatre man Simon Stone); Hugo Weaving is Bob, tracked down by his son after many years isolated in a remote tin shack (Commission, written and debut directed by actor David Wenham). Actress Mia Wasikowska impresses as a first-time writerdirector with the fluid Long, Clear View. Also notable is Cockleshell (director, Tony Ayres; writer, Marcel Dorney), segment opener Big World (writer-director-cinematographer, Warwick Thornton) and Aquifer, a gripping contribution from overall producer Connolly. The financial backing of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation guarantees a national TV showing of this bold collaborative venture. It deserves to be seen, with all its challenges and bold complexities, on a cinema screen. At three non-stop hours, The Turning is a demanding length for any entertainment, but Connolly had equally eccentric plans for its local release. For an initial 16-screen, twoweek run the film played once a day at a special price, $22 (a$25), with a complimentary ‘limited-edition’ glossy programme and a much-needed 10-minute comfort break. This striking plan, aimed squarely at book lovers and arthouse cinema-goers, worked well at the local box office and offers an alternative distribution model for overseas territories.

A warm and fuzzy coming-of-age comedy that makes wonderful use of its 1980s backdrop, Michael Tully’s Ping Pong Summer may feel rather familiar, but there is a lot of goodnatured and very accessible fun to be had from its tale of one 13-year-old’s dream of glory on the table-tennis table. The film hits the mainstream sweetspot with its loving links to 1980s rap, video games, soft rock and branded clothes, with strong cameo casting helping to top off this well constructed and sweetly made film. Susan Sarandon is top of the cameo list — though more could have been made of her — while John Hannah and Lea Thompson (herself a heroine of many a 1980s teen film) provide extra sheen. It is a familiar and much-loved coming-of-age format. Shy and rather awkward Radford ‘Rad’ Miracle (Conte) heads to the Maryland beaches on holiday with his enthusiastic parents — Thompson and Hannah (playing an Irish cop of all things) — and permanently grumpy older goth sister Michelle (Seabrook). He is befriended by the equally mild-mannered Teddy Fryy (Massey) and the pair bond through their love of hiphop and ping pong, with Teddy introducing Rad to the delights of the Fun Hub amusement hall, replete with air hockey, arcade games and a ping-pong table. The pair are enthusiastic amateurs rather than talented players, but their good-natured game is interrupted by arrogant rich kids Lyle Ace (McCaughtry) and Dale Lyons (Riddle), who kick them off the table and warn them to keep away. Add to the plot is the fact Rad takes a shine to Lyle’s ex-girlfriend Stacy Summers (Shockley) — who is way out of his league — and you have a film heading towards a ping-pong showdown between Rad and Lyle as a chance for the bumbling 13-year-old to claim teen glory and maybe get the girl. Salvation of sorts comes in the form of his oddball nextdoor neighbour, the wonderfully named Randi Jammer (Sarandon), who, it turns out, happened to be a former tabletennis star. How handy! So she sets about training him — which mainly seems to involve her drinking and commenting, “Ball making contact,” as he practises — and giving him the self-confidence to play the vital game. Ping Pong Summer treads a fine line between being an ironic tribute to 1980s teen comedies and wanting to work as a fun, formulaic and accessible film in its own right. It lacks the edge of films such as The Way Way Back, but is made with a real warmth and affection for its characters and time period that it is easy to forgive.

The Crossing
Crossing over into romance John Woo’s romantic drama may seem some distance from the elegant action films that made his name, but its epic scale and historical sweep builds on the skills he brought to Red Cliff. Liz Shackleton reports omantic epic The Crossing appears to be something of a departure for John Woo — a director best known for inventing balletic gunplay and male-bonding heroics in action movies on both sides of the Pacific. But the key word here is epic and with his last movie, period war drama Red Cliff, Woo has already proved he can handle huge, sweeping stories set against the backdrop of China’s tumultuous history. Depicting events at the end of the Han Dynasty, the two-part Red Cliff was made for $74m and grossed more than $300m worldwide. The Crossing is another story that can only be told on a grand scale. Scripted by Wang Hui-ling (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), it follows three couples from different backgrounds who board a ship in Shanghai bound for Taiwan at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. At the time, more than a million people were fleeing mainland China after the Communists came to power. Wang’s script is based on the true story of an overloaded Chinese steamer, the Taiping, which sank after hitting a cargo boat on the way to Taiwan. Given the story, comparisons to James Cameron’s Titanic, a massive hit in China in 1998 and on its 3D re-release in 2012, are perhaps inevitable. Woo says that Wang, who wrote Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution, brought the story to his attention while he was working on Red Cliff. Woo started developing the project in 2007 with Terence Chang, his longtime producer and partner in Lion Rock Productions. “I wanted to make a film that showed a turbulent period in modern history, to show how love can overcome all difficulties,” Woo says. But their plans hit a stumbling block when Wang’s manager sold the script to a Taiwanese company. After protracted and unsuccessful nego-

tiations to recover the script rights, Woo and Chang dropped the project in 2009. Then a few years later the script was sold to Zhejiang Huace Film & TV in mainland China, which approached Chang to produce. “I then put Huace and [Beijing] Galloping Horse together,” explains Chang. “The project finally came full circle back to me.” The final budget of the film, which like Red Cliff will be released in two parts in Asia, will come close to $50m. Galloping Horse, now headed by Jin Nan following the death of her husband Li Ming last month, is providing the bulk of the budget, while Beijing-based Le Vision Pictures is contributing 20%, China Film Group 10% and Zhejiang Huace 2%. “I have to give credit to Ivy Zhong, Galloping Horse’s vice-chairman, who raised the majority of the budget,” says Chang.
A-list cast The film started shooting in July 2013 near Beijing with a cast that reads like a who’s who of pan-Asian talent. The three female leads are played by China’s Zhang Ziyi, Korean actress Song Hye-kyo, recently seen in Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster, and Japan’s Masami Nagasawa, who starred in hit romantic drama Crying Out Love, In The Centre Of The World. The male leads are played by two of mainland China’s biggest stars, Tong Dawei and Huang Xiaoming, along with Taiwanese-Japanese star Takeshi Kaneshiro, who was also a lead in Red Cliff. Most of the production is taking place at China Film Group’s Huairou studios in northern Beijing, where the ship and water tanks have been built, while additional scenes have been filmed in Taiwan and Shanghai. The team expects to finish principal photography by the end of March, barring a few scenes that
require warmer weather. Behind-the-scenes talent includes cinematographer Zhao Fei (Let The Bullets Fly), production designer Horace Ma (Drug War) and composer Taro Iwashiro (Red Cliff). While Red Cliff made most of its box office in Asia, The Crossing looks like it could have longer international legs due to the compelling human stories and disaster elements in the script. And as the film is set within the last century, it should also avoid the complexities of Red Cliff’s historical context and tableaux of characters. “This is an epic love story spanning 50 years of modern Chinese history,” says Woo. “It is about three couples whose lives are affected by the tide of history. But it’s not a heavy or sad story. It’s a romantic story of hope with a lot of action, drama and humour.” Chang is expecting to prepare an international version for delivery in early 2015 — in the case of Red Cliff, a single two-and-a-half-hour version was cut for international markets. The first part of the Asian version is scheduled for release at the end of the year. Visual-effects house Digital Domain, in which Galloping Horse acquired and sold a majority stake last year, is working on the ship-sinking sequence, an area in which it has ample experience as it also worked on Titanic. Pixomondo and other vendors are handling the rest of the VFX shots. Woo says the film has several themes that should strike a chord with Western audiences: “It’s about fate, which means that many things happen for reasons beyond your control. It’s about humanity, and how suffering brings out the best and worst in people. And more importantly it’s about hope.” Chang concludes: “This film is not just about a certain period in China’s history, but also carries a universal theme of love, compassion, sacrifice and hope, which is understood and embraced by audis ences all over the world.” n

Receiving its world premiere in Berlin Competition, Diao Yinan’s third feature, Black Coal, Thin Ice (Bai Ri Yan Huo) tells the story of a former detective (Liao Fan) investigating a series of murders, who falls in love with a woman (Gwei Lun Mei) linked to all the victims. The film is the first to emerge from a partnership between Jiangsu Omnijoi Media Corp and Boneyard Entertainment China (BEC), the Hong Kong subsidiary of Daniel J Victor’s New York-based Boneyard Entertainment. Vivian Qu and Omnijoi’s Wan Juan produced with Shen Yang and Zhang Dajun as co-producers. Diao previously directed critically acclaimed dramas Uniform (2003), about a man impersonating a police officer, and Night Train (2007), about a female prison guard.
Set to receive its world premiere in Panorama, Fruit Chan’s long-awaited return to film-making in his native Hong Kong is an intense, post-apocalyptic thriller based on a bestselling novel. The story revolves around 17 passengers on a late-night minibus, who upon exiting the Lion Rock tunnel, slowly discover they are the only people left alive in Hong Kong. Produced by Amy Chin and executiveproduced by Winnie Tsang’s Golden Scene, the film features a cast of veteran Hong Kong actors, including Simon Yam, Kara Hui and Lam Suet, along with rising stars such as Wong You-nam, Janice Man and Chui Tien-you. The third mainland Chinese film in Berlin Competition is Ning Hao’s long-delayed desert-set road movie No Man’s Land (Wu Ren Qu), which was completed in 2009 but only released in China last December following what appeared to be protracted wrangling with local film censors. Xu Zheng plays a lawyer who travels to China’s western deserts to defend a falcon trafficker and runs into a series of grotesque characters when he attempts to make the return trip by car. The cast also includes Huang Bo and Yu Nan. The edgy action drama, with its wry observations on the bestial nature of modern society, was a big hit on its China release. It did not hurt that Xu Zheng and Huang Bo have both become big stars through other movies since making this film.

BLIND MASSAGE Dir Lou Ye Also premiering in Berlin Competition, Lou Ye’s Blind Massage (Tui Na) is based on Bi Feiyu’s novel set in a massage centre run by the blind. Working with both sighted and visually impaired actors, Lou explores the emotional world of the blind through several protagonists including the masseur who falls in love with a prostitute and the doctor who gets mixed up in his brother’s illegal money transactions. The cast includes Qin Hao, who starred in Lou’s Mystery and Spring Fever, Guo Xiaodong (Summer Palace) and Zhang Lei. No Man’s Land
Dir Zhou Hao Chongqing-based film-maker Zhou Hao’s debut feature The Night (Ye) has been praised by Berlin Panorama programmers for its “rough intimacy and confident sense of style”, and described as reminiscent of Fassbinder and Wong Kar Wai. The 21-year-old writer-director also stars in the film as a narcissistic young male prostitute, searching for that elusive human connection through his relationships with a female prostitute and a client who falls in love with him. The other lead roles are played by Li Jin Kang and Liu Xiao Xiao. Zhou previously directed short films Addiction and Lust and is studying media and arts in Chongqing. THAT DEMON WITHIN Dir Dante Lam Receiving its world premiere in Panorama, Dante Lam’s psychological thriller That Demon Within (Mo Jing) stars Daniel Wu as a police officer who accidentally saves the life of the leader of a gang of violent robbers, played by Nick Cheung. When the leader is betrayed by his own men, the cop starts working with him to bring down the gang but is haunted by disturbing visions. the chase Director Yann Demange talks to Andreas Wiseman about his debut feature ’71, which plays here in Competition ann Demange is in demand. From agents, producers, financiers, festivals and now journalists. And after seeing his debut feature ’71, which plays tonight in Berlin’s Competition, it’s easy to see why. After successful stints directing UK television series Top Boy and Criminal Justice, the Paris-born London-based director is now on course to make waves with his confident and novel addition to the canon of films about The Troubles in Northern Ireland. But when he meets Screen in London ahead of the festival, the 37-year-old director is still “unclenching” after delivering his film just days before. “I only saw the film in its entirety last week,” he says. “It’s surreal.”

Connecting with the character In ’71, rising star Jack O’Connell (Starred Up) plays a young and disoriented British soldier who is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the dangerous streets of Belfast in 1971. The film’s impressive supporting cast includes Sean Harris, Paul Anderson, David Wilmot, Charlie Murphy and Sam Reid. The piece is shot through with striking visuals and genuine tension; that tension instantly caught Demange’s attention on page. “I had been looking for a film for a long time,” he says about his path to the script. “Tessa Ross at Film4 sat me down after Criminal Justice and said, ‘Make it with us.’ I felt privileged. Lizzie Francke and Chris Collins from the BFI were the same. And

Dan MacRae at StudioCanal had been sending me material for years. I’d read a lot but nothing clicked. I had to be really moved by my first film. “But when I read ’71 I immediately connected to the lead character, Gary Hook, and how the boys on all sides were humanised,” he adds. All three backers mentioned by Demange, along with producers Angus Lamont at Crab Apple and Robin Gutch at Warp, would become cornerstones in getting ’71 made. Screen Yorkshire, Creative Scotland and Northern Ireland Screen also provided funding and Protagonist boarded sales.
Careful chasing From the get-go, however, the film required a careful balancing act: a feat that Demange relished. “One of the things that most grabbed me was the chase element to this film. It’s visceral, muscular; it’s a thriller, but that’s not enough. You wouldn’t want to exploit an important time in people’s history to just make a chase movie. There was real humanity in the script too. “I wanted to make a film that was true to the politics, without being too polemical or taking people to school, but that also appealed to my niece and nephew who are 20 years old,” he explains. “From the outset we made sure we engaged with the shades of grey in this conflict.” The process was an education for Damange, who grew up in south London years after the period depicted in his film. “Writer Gregory Burke and producer Angus Lamont are both Scottish and they
taught me a lot about sectarian divides. They took me on a lot of research trips to meet people who were active on both sides. I grew up in Streatham so to an extent The Troubles were white noise for me.” Demange’s enthusiasm and talent inspired his collaborators to give the first-time director what he needed to make the film he had envisioned. And more. Not only did he get his first-choice male lead, a 44-day shoot and multiple production locations across the UK — the film’s thrilling central chase scene was shot in four different locations in two different UK cities — Demange also got a sizeable, for a first UK feature, £5m-plus budget — around $8.1m. “There was a point when the market was telling us the film’s budget was £3m [$5m], but we knew we couldn’t make this film for that.” Demange also ensured he worked with regular collaborators DoP Tat Radcliffe and editor Chris Wyatt, both of whom showcase impressive skill in the film. Initially due to shoot in Northern Ireland, Demange could not find the period housing that the film needed. So Sheffield, Liverpool, Leeds and Blackburn stepped in. The money and locationhopping was justified. Demange, like his feature debut, is an intriguing combination of raw energy and subtle intelligence. His next film could be even bigger and bolder: “I want to try something different next. I’m itching to make another film. What it will be I don’t know yet but it could be something in French, or European, s at least, something on a big canvas.” n

Next Goal Wins
The end goal Directors Mike Brett and Steve Jamison and producer Kristian Brodie make their feature debuts with Next Goal Wins, an uplifting documentary about the American Samoa football team. Wendy Mitchell meets the team f you think training for a World Cup qualifying match would be tough work, having a first practice at 5am and a late one ending at 10pm, just think of the guys who want to make a film about the process, arriving at 4am and leaving at 11pm. That was one of many challenges for first-time feature directors Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, on their quest to make Next Goal Wins, an uplifting feature documentary about the American Samoa football team. American Samoa was a laughing stock in the football world after suffering the world’s heaviest defeat in 2001 — losing to Australia 31-0. But the team didn’t lose hope, and they recruited maverick Dutch football coach Thomas Rongen to come to the island and help them on their World Cup qualifying campaign in 2011. Producer Kristian Brodie of Agile Films sparked the initial idea for the project, which he brought to Brett and Jamison’s company Archer’s Mark. They had been making football commercials for several years, and Brett says: “We felt like we were making the same films again and again. We wanted to rediscover our love of football.” The companies self funded the project.

eight weeks on that occasion, and were lucky that Rongen was happy for the filming to continue). Producer Brodie adds: “While we were shooting we had the tagline, ‘Without a win, without a goal, but never without hope.’” Rongen, recovering from his own family tragedy, starts out as a very tough coach but clearly comes to love the team members as much as the audience. Another human interest story in the film comes from defender Jaiyah Saelua, a member of what is called the third gender in Samoan culture (she lives as a woman). It’s those stories that reach beyond a football audience, Brett says. “Female audiences have loved it and men are sobbing… Because of the core football audience, we know it has a home but we hope it reaches beyond that.” Distributors agree — K5 International acquired the film just before AFM and has sold it to Icon for the UK, Bodega for France and Madman in Australia, among others. The film is now completed and will be released theatrically starting in April, just ahead of the World Cup in Rio.
Keeping hope alive The American Samoans were sceptical at first — they had been approached by film and TV crews many times since the famous defeat. Jamison says: “They said everybody had been wanting to take the mickey. We wanted to celebrate the fact they wanted to keep playing.” They went to American Samoa to prove their intentions, and stayed for about six weeks initially. After they returned to the UK, they were soon back when Rongen was hired (they stayed for another

Football organisation FIFA has seen the film and is supporting it. As Brett notes: “The film has a powerful message about sport unifying people… it’s a good-news story for football.” Despite living in London, a 52-hour-commute from American Samoa, the directors spent months embedded with the team and amassed more than 300 hours of footage. The project’s striking visuals come from a combination of stunning scenery and expert cinematography (5k resolution on the RED Epic camera). Jamison says: “We knew it had to be theatrical from the get-go.” Brett and Jamison also shot it themselves, and Brett says the pair have a “telepathic understanding” about coverage.

Archer’s Mark now has several other feature film projects on the go, including Tom Harper’s War Book with Sixteen Films, The Darkest Universe by Will Sharpe and Tom Kingsley, and the feature being developed based on Sundance-selected short Notes On Blindness. And their advertising background will also come in handy. Brett says: “There is an enormous amount of talent in the commercials world that can make the move to features… directors we’re repping want to work in the long form.” The pair plan to direct together again, next time on a fictional film — they have about six potential projects in the mix. Agile is also developing a slate of narrative features. Brodie says: “The process of making Next Goal Wins opened my eyes to finding the story under the surface.” Future projects include serial killer love story Beast by Michael Pearce, and David Stoddart’s psychological thriller Disturbed. Also ahead is the local premiere of Next Goal Wins, as the film-makers have held back the rights for American Samoa. “We want to give it back to them, and they can use it as an educational tool in schools,” Brett says. The team does show progress, and while the film-makers cannot take credit for the athletic improvements, they were very moved when Tavita Taumua, the head of the Football Federation of American Samoa, told them: “The guys kind of did it for you… When you came back [to shoot], it s made us believe we could do it.” n
