Match Factory wooed by Gomes’s Arabian Nights Nanni Moretti
Mia Madre goes to Films Distribution BY MELANIE GOODFELLOW
Films Distribution has acquired worldwide rights to Nanni Moretti’s upcoming dramedy Mia Madre about a film director juggling her contrasting public and private lives. Margherita Buy, John Turturro and Moretti lead the cast in the film, which is currently shooting in Rome. Buy plays a successful film director whose powerful on-set persona is at odds with her private self. On set, Buy’s character takes command; at home she is at the mercy of her ailing mother and taciturn adolescent son. Turturro plays a US actor in a film she is shooting; Moretti plays the film-maker’s brother. The $10.9m (¤8m) production is lead-produced by Domenico Procacci’s Rome-based Fandango, with Moretti’s Sacher Film, France’s Le Pacte and Germany’s Film Boutique on board as co-producers. Moretti wrote the script with Francesco Piccolo, who also worked on We Have A Pope and Paolo Virzi’s Human Capital, and Valia Santella.

German outfit The Match Factory has begun talking to buyers at the EFM about Tabu director Miguel Gomes’s latest project, Arabian Nights (As 1001 Noites). Gomes’s film transposes contemporary Portugal — beset by the economic crisis — into the structure of the famous collection of folk tales, One Thousand And One Nights (aka The Arabian Nights). Stories will be based on real events taken from news and press in Portugal during the production period. The one-year shoot started in early December 2013 and will con-
tinue throughout 2014. The cast includes Adriano Luz, Carloto Cotta, Rogerio Samora, Diogo Doria and Crista Alfaiate. Co-writers include Tabu writer Mariana Ricardo and Tabu editor Telmo Churro. Uncle Boonmee cin-
ematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom is also on board. The production has also created an online blog (www.as1001noites. com/en) for the film featuring contributions from Portuguese journalists and illustrators. O Som E A Furia produces with Shellac Sud, Komplizen Film and BOX Productions. Arthouse sales firm The Match Factory, which has four films in Competition at the Berlinale and one in Panorama, previously repped Gomes’s Venice 2013 premiere, Redemption, and his 2012 Berlinale Competition drama, Tabu.

McNamara believes in Santa

Soul Surfer director Sean McNamara has signed on to Young Santa, an adaptation of L Frank Baum’s The Life And Adventures Of Santa Claus. Joel Smith, Gudrun Giddings, David Brookwell, Daniel Wagner and Christian Arnold-Beutel are producing the live-action feature film and Stuart Pollok is on board as executive producer. David Casci adapted the screenplay about how a little boy became Father Christmas.
Vertical Entertainment has struck a deal at the EFM with VMI Worldwide for US rights to the family film A Fine Step. VMI has also licensed rights in Canada (Mongrel Media), France (Zylo), Germany (Capelight Pictures), Australia/New Zealand (Umbrella Entertainment), Africa (M-Net Channel) and eastern Europe (Daro Film Distribution). Luke Perry, Armand Assante, and Leonor Varela star in the story of an injured horseman who recovers with the help of a girl. “This film is core to our content strategy — a great story that will inspire audiences and families,” said a Vertical spokesperson. “We believe Vertical is the perfect partner for releasing this picture in the US,” said a VMI spokesperson. “Their expertise in family film is well established and we have great confidence in their distribution plans for A Fine Step.” Rich Goldberg and Peter Jarowey of Vertical negotiated the deal with Andre Relis of VMI Worldwide.

Wildcard strikes for duo by Andreas Wiseman

Steph Green’s Run & Jump, picked up from Global Screen, stars Will Forte, Maxine Peake and Ed MacLiam in the tale of a US doctor who travels to Ireland to investigate a family after one of its members suffers a stroke that changes their personality. Wildcard will release in May. IFC already has US rights. Also new to the slate is Brendan Muldowney’s Love Eternal, currently being sold at the EFM by Reel Suspects. Based on the Japanese novel In Love With The Dead, the film centres on an isolated and death-fixated young man who tries to make sense of the world by getting closer to death. The well-travelled drama stars Robert De Hoog (Skin) and Pollyanna McIntosh. Wildcard has also recently picked up Dublin skateboard doc Hill Street.

Weingartner heads Underground by Martin Blaney
Hans Weingartner is set to make his English-language directorial debut with an adaptation of Larry Orbach and Vivien OrbachSmith’s bestseller, Soaring Underground (Der Taucher). The true story of Orbach as a young German-Jewish teenager struggling to survive in Berlin during the Second World War will be produced by Hank Levine Film, one of the producers of Competition film Praia Do Futuro.
Weingartner, director of The Edukators, told Screen: “The story personally appealed to me because the protagonist isn’t a victim, he shows resistance to the Nazi regime, and this theme of resistance is one that has run through almost all of my films. Everything you need for a film is in the story — emotions, humanity as well as a lot of humour.” Levine is now in talks with US investors to board the international co-production.

Beloved Sisters Reviewed by Fionnuala Halligan Dominik Graf ’s handsomely mounted Beloved Sisters (Die Geliebten Schwestern) is an in-depth exploration of an unconventional love affair in a highly conventional society — the affair being that between the 18th-century German philosopher and poet Friedrich Schiller and the sisters Caroline von Beulwitz and Charlotte von Lengefeld. Graf (The Red Cockatoo) has long been intrigued by the dark corners of a love triangle, and Beloved Sisters probes its angles fully. While the characters in the story clearly existed and enjoyed a particularly close relationship, Graf has coloured in his screenplay to award them a passionate 13-year love affair with all its twists and turns. It is a challenging prospect at almost three hours in length and set largely among the French-speaking aristocracy of Weimar, Jena and Rudolstadt in the late 1700s, but Beloved Sisters can occasionally thrill with its confident mise-en-scene, splendid craft credits and solid characterisation, particularly from the sisters. With its more accessible focus on the love story rather than Schiller per se, it could perform solidly in Germany, where audiences will be more familiar with the milieu and prepared for its demands. But Beloved Sisters is still a tricky international prospect for the more rarefied end of the cultural spectrum, gaining Germany’s Graf more admirers,

if not quite the commercial rewards that have so far eluded the director at the box office and seen him work successfully in television for the last eight years. Bright Star or Immortal Beloved may be the parallels, but Beloved Sisters is a little more remote than even those literary screen romances. Later to become the star of Weimar literary society and friend of the writer Goethe, Friedrich Schiller (Stetter) is introduced to the two sisters as a penniless young poet who has been exiled from his native Württemberg having made a controversial debut with his play The Robbers. Certainly it is known that Schiller enjoyed a close friendship with the impoverished aristocrat Caroline (Herzsprung) and married her sister Charlotte (Confurius), although speculation as to the nature of their relationship remains just that. Although the sisters are members of the aristocracy and surrounded at all times by servants, they have fallen on hard times and the rebellious Caroline has had to make an unhappy marriage to provide the family with an income. Charlotte, meanwhile, has been sent to the Weimar court where her godmother (who is enjoying an affair with Goethe) is expected to make a similarly profitable match. Her failure to achieve this is a public humiliation from which the young girl never fully recovers. Of the two, Caroline is fiery and, it is hinted, mentally unstable, while Charlotte is more docile and reserved. Between both well-drawn characters, they can provide the youthful Schiller — who
enjoys delicate health not to mention precarious financial prospects — with everything he needs, and the sisters form a pact in which, to put it simplistically, Charlotte marries the poet and Caroline sleeps with him. Sex, of course, is the force that will bend the triangle out of shape. The story framing Beloved Sisters does not have much space to move — there are three corners after all, and by the end it is bouncing off all of them in a repeat pattern. But where the affair runs out of steam, the film itself comes alive. Graf ’s sense of period, the lighting, the interiors (rooms, carriages, courts) and bucolic exteriors are all a pleasure and almost justify the extended running time. Baroque shots of opulent and more cramped living quarters are framed obliquely, through half-open doors, making the viewer a voyeur of this decaying society. A member of the Berlin school, Graf draws heavily of the talents of his leading actresses, Herzsprung and Confurius, who deliver nuanced and credible portrayals of characters from a longgone era who might otherwise feel inaccessible. The focus is much less on Schiller, who remains at a slight remove, although Stetter captures his delicacy well. Technical aspects are top-notch, from score to camera, costumes and flawless production design from Claus-Jürgen Pfeiffer.

Two Men In Town
Competition
Reviewed by Fionnuala Halligan In Two Men In Town, Rachid Bouchareb takes José Giovanni’s 1973 French film of the same name to a small town in New Mexico, where Forest Whitaker, in a role played originally by Alain Delon, is an ex-con trying to go straight but dogged by an Inspector Javert-like figure played by Harvey Keitel. It is an awkward graft in which none of the players look particularly comfortable, despite a typically powerful central performance from Whitaker which should, along with Bouchareb’s well-defined arthouse pedigree (Indigenes, London River), command attention although mainstream play will prove a challenge for this stilted work. Working with writers Olivier Lorelle and Yasmina Khadra, Bouchareb has upped the dramatic stakes from Giovanni’s film — originally a bank robber, the central character is now a violent cop killer. He has converted to Islam during his 18-year stretch, leading to expectations that Bouchareb may be using Two Men In Town’s premise to examine smalltown America’s relationship with the Muslim faith. The New Mexico milieu, with its vigilante border patrols, also promises a rich dramatic seam. However, it is not entirely clear what Bouchareb is shooting for with Two Men In Town; is it a latter-day Western, an archly iconic morality tale? Some of the film veers towards the anachronistic — Whitaker’s costumes, for example. His character, William Garnett, is the great outsider in a land that doesn’t much like the outsider. Brenda Blethyn’s appearance as an overweight, plaintalking parole officer (the Jean Gabin role) is initially incongruous. She is charged with helping Garnett take his faltering first steps back into society, and the UK actress soon beds down to make the most of the part. Garnett has been a criminal since the age of 11, and this is his fifth prison stretch, for murdering Sheriff Agati’s (Keitel) deputy. Agati won’t let go, although Keitel never seems fully convinced by his mission, and neither will Willie’s former partner in cross-border crime, Terence (Guzman). And despite his desperate attempts at religion, Garnett always seems too fragile for even himself, never mind his adversaries. Dressed like a Nation of Islam follower in his suit, tie and Malcolm X glasses as he drives across the desert on his bashed-up motorbike, Garnett is a peculiar sort of native child with not much in the way of backstory to call home. While French-born Bouchareb shoots New Mexico with a sympathetic eye, there is a lack of ease to this production that can lend a tension to the central plight of Whitaker’s doomed Garrett but also fatally hinders the film’s already erratic flow.

Prolific Québécois film-maker Denis Coté explores the world of work in Joy Of Man’s Desiring (Que Ta Joie Demeure), a poetic and hybrid study of industrial life, factories and the meaning of labour. After the fiction of his Berlinale entry last year Vic + Flo Saw A Bear, Coté returns to the poetic documentary-essay mode of his Carcasses and Bestiaire in a film that uses factories and workshops as the setting for a formalised, sometimes theatrical and entirely mesmerising study. The abstraction and austerity of his approach mean commercial prospects lie only in the artiest niche sectors, but festivals are a natural home for this distinctive and involving, albeit minor-key, piece. The film begins enigmatically with a close-up of a woman talking over her shoulder, making a seemingly amorous pact with someone who may be a lover, and whom she warns she might one day destroy. It soon becomes apparent that she is effectively an embodiment of the workplace itself, and that the potential lover is every worker. The film kicks in with a series of shots of different pieces of industrial machinery, hammering away, crunching, punching holes and, as it were, bumping and grinding — the sexual undertones very evident in all this machine activity, parodying the movements of the human body. What follows is for much of the time a wordless montage of different workspaces and the people who inhabit them — heavy industry at first, then a variety of locales where people do either highly mechanised and automatic work, tuning their bodies to machine rhythms (as in a hospital laundry) or more personal, precise work, such as assembling furniture or organ keyboards. For the most part, we seem to be watching actors perform highly composed, impersonal dialogue about the nature of work and its satisfactions, or lack of it: sometimes identifying themselves openly by stereotypical titles, such as ‘depressed worker’, ‘unemployed woman’. These scenes are sometimes fragmentary, sometimes more expansive, as in an African worker’s droll parable about the pleasures of work and the dangers of exploitation. Despite the Brechtian lessons seemingly offered by the film — which contains as many images of entrapment and enclosure as Coté’s disturbing zoo documentary Bestiaires — the film does not lead us towards any strict conclusion. Rather, it offers a stimulating poetic montage of ideas about labour, leisure and — as suggested by the Bach composition heard sporadically — humanity’s higher satisfactions and aspirations. The music is part of a terrific sound design, by Frédéric Cloutier and Clovis Gouaillier, that turns mechanical noise into a rhythmic score as mesmerising as anything by Kraftwerk and their ilk.

Last Hijack Reviewed by David D’Arcy Somali pirates are the screen villains of the year, and they get another 15 minutes in the documentary, Last Hijack. Seen from a pirate’s point of view and shot in Somalia, it is an effort to have you share the pain of at least one pirate. Getting to an actual pirate — even a former one — is a huge coup, and filming in Somalia to tell that story involves genuine courage, yet Last Hijack is one part of the picture, rather than the definitive documentary on these contemporary buccaneers. The film is likely to find a berth on European television after a round of festivals — and perhaps somewhere small in the North American market, which is fatigued with conflict cinema. But the film could also be overtaken quickly if a documentary with better access to the gunmen emerges. Mohamed is the name of the former pirate spoken to by film-makers Femke Wolting and Tommy Pallotta. From certain sides, the pudgy, affable gent can look a bit like Forest Whitaker (now we will know who to cast in the remake), and he explains on-camera that trawlers plying the east African routes started the hijack business by destroying fishermen’s nets and firing on fishing boats. We see the armed men in action in animated sequences, opening with an attack on a container ship by an angry eagle that looks straight out of a recruitment advert. The animation chronicles the storming of ships, the seizing of hostages and the receiving of ransoms, yet it would not be needed if
Concerning Violence Reviewed by Mark Adams A powerful, illuminating and visually arresting documentary that offers a fresh perspective on the African liberation struggles of the 1960s and 1970s, Goran Hugo Olsson’s striking Concerning Violence makes for compulsive and at times disturbing viewing as it tackles colonial rule head on, benefiting from singer Lauryn Hill’s striking narration — also repeated on the screen — taken from psychologistphilosopher Frantz Fanon’s anticolonial text, The Wretched Of The Earth. This intelligent and provocative film cleverly weaves archival footage into an at-times searing treatise on the terrible impact of colonialism, at the core of which is Fanon’s theory that the violence must be met with greater violence to be defeated. Director Olsson returns to Sundance after The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975, which played in the World Cinema Documentary Competition in 2011, with an impressively produced and structured film that will tick plenty of the right boxes for intelligent audiences and arthouse distributors, with television sales also likely to be strong. As the film’s full title, Concerning Violence: Nine Scenes From The Anti-Imperialistic Self-Defense, suggests, the film is structured in nine chapters, covering a series of different colonial struggles in

the film-makers had obtained mobile phone or other footage the hijackers themselves had taken. Under the vivid Somali sky, always extraordinary to see, we listen to Mohamed tell of breaking with the pirates, as foreign governments fight back and local anti-piracy pressure also builds. His betrothal to wife Muna is based on a pledge to her family — and to his father — to give up piracy. We get a rare look at a Somali wedding, but we are not sure at the end if Mohamed’s promise has been kept. Yet the focus of Last Hijack is micro rather than
global. After epic sagas such as A Hijacking and Captain Phillips, much of the doc has the look of a home movie, despite the piercing light of the region. Last Hijack is limited because it is the account of one man, albeit a fascinating ethnographic portrait at times — complete with scenes in Mohamed’s SUV that look like visits with rappers on reality TV. Despite the window that it opens, the doc points to how much we do not know. After yet another Somali pirate film, we still need one to tell us more.
Africa, some more brutal and bloody than others, but all linked by Fanon’s intelligent prose and a call to embrace a more creative and humane society. The segments — often footage from television companies in Scandinavia who are backers of the film — include extensive material from a Swedish mine in Liberia, where a strike leads to miners being thrown out of their homes by the army; a shocking image of a young woman with her arm hacked off feeding her baby, which itself has a leg cut off; a Swedish couple doing missionary work in Tanzania, intent on building a church before a school; a night-time attack on a Portuguese base in Angola; bombastic farmers in former Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) talking about their lives; and an
interview with a rather young president Mugabe of Zimbabwe. The quotes from Fanon — who fought in the Second World War and later in Algeria against the colonial power — run up on screen as read by Hill (or Ms Lauryn Hill, as she is credited in the film), which helps reinforce the power of his words. His language is lucid, angry and potent, and is the glue that binds the film together. Beautifully assembled, the film also benefits from a strikingly jazzy score that helps the images move along with dark ease. The film premiered at Sundance, but the Berlin screening features a new preface about Fanon by professor Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak from Columbia University.

Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter Reviewed by Mark Adams A delightfully mannered and eccentric delight, Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter is a cult film in the making, with Rinko Kikuchi (Norwegian Wood) striking as the oddball Kumiko, whose quest for ‘treasure’ takes her from Tokyo to snowy Minnesota. The film will delight lovers of filmic quirks, but perhaps will bemuse those expecting a more traditional treasure-hunt movie. The third film from brothers David and Nathan Zellner (Goliath, Kid-Thing), could easily sell well to indie distribs with an attitude, especially given Kikuchi’s growing stature. In the opening scenes Kumiko follows a treasure map to a cave overlooking a beach, where she unearths an old VHS tape, which we soon discover is a copy of the Coen brothers’ 1996 film Fargo. She watches and rewatches the scene in which Steve Buscemi buries a briefcase full of cash deep in snow next to a fence, making notes and equations to work out where the actual spot might be. Unhappy at work and browbeaten by her mother, who complains that she isn’t married yet, Kumiko continues her research into the whereabouts of the case and plans a trip to the US. This means — in perhaps the most delightful and sad moment of the film — she has to abandon her beloved rabbit Bunzo. And so, midway through the film she arrives in the US, speaking minimal English and through the kindness of equally oddball strangers slowly makes her way to Fargo. The film spirals towards a surreally happy ending that might have been just an oddball step too far if it were not for the fact Kikuchi’s warm-hearted oddball charm is so winning, the concept so quirky and the delivery so proficient. It is a strange, but rather wonderful film.

Three wounded creatures need healing in this attractive Australian feature — a broken-winged eagle; the reluctant prisoner given responsibility for its rehabilitation; and the officer in charge of the raptor programme. Though the three outcomes are hardly in doubt, the heartfelt tale is told with plenty of soaring nature shots around Victoria’s photogenic Macedon Ranges. Academy award-winning cinematographer Andrew Lesnie (The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit films) adds much visual panache to the otherwise plain narrative. There are market screenings here in Berlin this week, and a local release is due in April. This is director/co-producer/co-writer Monahan’s third feature with actor Hugo Weaving; their 1998 collaboration The Interview won the Australian Film Institute’s best picture award. There is a brooding masculinity and a constant threat violence about the low-security inland prison farm community in which Healing is based. Iranian-Australian Viktor (Hany) is in the final 18 months of a 16-year sentence, having committed a drunken crime for which he has no excuses, only self-loathing. Deliberately aloof, he antagonises his fellow inmates (“He may have been a hard man once,” says one, “he’s just an old man now”) and he seems a hopeless case until officer Matt (Weaving), himself unable to recover from a family blow, initiates a programme to assist the nearby bird sanctuary. This introduces Viktor to various falcons, owls and Yasmine, a magnificent wedge-tailed eagle. Performances are strong. Tough and wounded, both Weaving and Hany hold our attention throughout. Also fine are Viktor’s two young assigned helpers — the brooding Xavier Samuel and the twitchy, darting-eyed Mark Leonard Winter.

Dhoom: 3 is the biggest Hindi film ever, grossing $64m in India and $27m overseas
Local films race ahead in India Hollywood has yet to maximise the potential of the Indian market, where 2013 saw some record-breaking Bollywood hits despite a slowdown in box-office growth. Liz Shackleton reports lthough the Mumbai-based, Hindi-language film industry produced some record-breaking hits in 2013, overall boxoffice growth appeared to slow again last year, following a bumper year in 2012. Bollywood hits included Yash Raj Films’ action adventure Dhoom: 3, which became the biggest Hindi film of all time on its December release, grossing $64m in India and $27m overseas. Other heavy hitters included Disney UTV’s Chennai Express and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which grossed $44m and $38m respectively; superhero sequel Krrish 3 ($38m); Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram-Leela ($24m); and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag ($22m), backed by Viacom18 Motion Pictures. But the success of these films was not enough to sustain the previous year’s growth in the overall market, about half of which goes to Tamil, Telugu and other regional-language productions and just under 10% to foreign films. Although figures were still being compiled at the time of writing, theatrical box office was thought to have increased by 15%18% in 2013, compared to growth of 24% to $1.35bn (RUP85bn) the previous year. Hollywood also had some successes in India in 2013: Marvel’s Iron Man 3, distributed by Disney UTV, grossed $12.3m, while Universal’s Fast & Furious 6 took $10.3m. Other big films included Warner

Bros’ Gravity and Man Of Steel, which grossed $6.7m and $5.9m respectively; Fox Star Studios’ The Wolverine with $4.8m and Paramount’s GI Joe: Retaliation with $4.2m. However, the US studios did not have as strong a year as in 2012 when five films grossed more than $10m.

Ship Of Theseus — all of which performed relatively well. “What made last year special was that audiences were appreciative of specialty genres, firsttime film-makers and new talent,” says Amrita Pandey, vice-president and head, theatrical, television & digital distribution — studio, Disney UTV. “Content and storytelling took precedence more than ever before.” Non-studio foreign films also continue to make inroads. PVR Pictures, the distribution arm of leading exhibitor PVR Cinemas, scored last year with Now You See Me, which grossed $900,000, Riddick ($600,000) and Jobs ($370,000). The company is currently capitalising on awards buzz to roll out several of this year’s Oscar contenders, including The Wolf Of Wall Street, American Hustle, 12 Years A Slave, Dallas Buyers Club and Her. “The Oscars have a big influence on Indian audiences and media — even the Golden Globes had an impact this year,” says PVR joint managing director Sanjeev K Bijli. “There’s a lot of goodwill that comes when a film opens in the US and the rest of the world. Day-and-date is critical — a lot of independent films are opening here just one or two weeks after the US.” But niche product will not reach its full potential while the market remains under-screened. Local studio chiefs point out that even the Bollywood films are still reaching only a small portion of the total audience. One problem has been the weakened economy and political uncertainty that has dogged the end of the current government’s fiveyear term. The local industry is hoping that investor confidence will return following general elections in May. “One good thing is that all the multiplex companies are now listed entities with access to corporate finance, so they’re in a position to fund their growth more aggressively,” says Viacom18 Motion Pictures COO Ajit Andhare. PPI’s Marcoly adds: “After several years of very slow progress, there

‘There is still a big need for more multiplexes and digitisation’ Anthony Marcoly, Paramount Pictures International
now appears to be some traction in the development of new multiplexes, which is critical to see this market really grow.” Indeed, India’s leading exhibitors — PVR Cinemas, Inox Movies and Big Cinemas — are all finally starting to expand their footprint into tier 2 and tier 3 cities. PVR, now the biggest chain with 408 screens following its acquisition of Cinemax, plans to open 70-80 screens this year, across markets of all sizes, including a five-screen complex in the southern city of Chennai.
Going south Cracking the south is crucial to growth, as this region has high levels of cinema-going, but has proved the most resistant to the multiplex revolution and other forms of change. Two of the south Indian states — Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh — still have government-imposed curbs on raising ticket prices. There are also big structural changes taking place in the cable TV market that could lead to more ancillary revenues for film. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is currently digitising the
cable industry, a move that is expected to stem piracy and increase subscription revenues for broadcasters. This should eventually lead to the introduction of a pay-per-view window for movies. Cable digitisation is moving more slowly than anticipated, but should be more or less complete by the end of 2014. Elsewhere, the industry may also be looking to overturn an unpopular ruling by India’s health ministry that made it mandatory for all films to flash up intrusive anti-smoking messages whenever a character lights up on the big screen. The legislation prompted Woody Allen to pull the Indian release of Blue Jasmine last year, and local director Anurag Kashyap has delayed the release of his latest film, Ugly, while he fights the ruling through the courts. But whichever way the political wind blows, India’s film market is unlikely to stop growing. It is just that, unlike some of the other BRIC markets, it will grow at its own uneven pace, thanks to its unique and at times eccentric characteristics. At the end of the day, this is still a market of 1.2 billion consumers whose favourite pastimes are s cricket and film. n
FICCI Frames convention tackles india’s issues Celebrating its 15th edition this year, the FICCI Frames convention (March 12-14) will be discussing many of the issues that affect the Indian film industry, including regulation, new business models for digital cinema, box-office tracking, intellectual property and shooting in 3D. Organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the conference also covers the wider Indian media and entertainment industry, with different tracks focusing
on film, broadcast, digital entertainment, animation, gaming and visual effects. This year, the organisers expect around 2,000 Indian and 600 foreign delegates. In a year when the world’s largest democracy heads to the polls, the major theme of Frames 2014 will be Media and Entertainment: Transforming Lives, highlighting the role of media in social change. Discussions will cover policy reform and regulatory changes, as well as how to produce socially meaningful content.
Speakers confirmed so far include producers Andy Paterson (The Railway Man) and Lydia Dean Pilcher (The Darjeeling Limited ), author William Dalrymple, Rentrak Corporation CEO Bill Livek, Reliance MediaWorks chief creative officer George Murphy, Celestial Tiger Entertainment CEO Todd Miller, Asian Animation Summit chairman Kim Dalton, and Roger Fisk, the communications guru on both of Barack Obama’s presidential election campaigns.
