Fortissimo reunited with Warmerdam BY MICHAEL ROSSER
Fortissimo Films has picked up rights to Alex van Warmerdam’s upcoming project, Schneider Vs Bax (working title). The project is the first from the Dutch writer-director since Cannes title Borgman, which vied for the Palme d’Or in 2013. Fortissimo has secured worldwide rights on the new feature, outside Benelux and Scandinavia, and is commencing pre-sales immediately. The deal was brokered by Fortissimo Films’ MD Nelleke Driessen and Graniet Film’s producer Marc van Warmerdam. Schneider Vs Bax revolves around two men, a contract killer and a writer, battling each other for survival. Schneider, the contract killer and a devoted family man, is offered a quick job on the morning of his birthday to kill Ramon Bax, a 50-year-old writer living in his secluded cabin by the lake. But what seems to be a simple assignment proves more challenging than expected. Fortissimo Films’ long-time partner, production company Graniet Film, is now casting, with principal photography scheduled for this coming summer and a theatrical release set for spring 2015.
Jean-Christophe Simon’s German sales house Films Boutique has seen strong demand for its slate of festival and market titles. Sundance award-winner Difret, directed by Zeresenay Mehari and executive produced by Angelina Jolie, has been acquired during the EFM by Cinéart for Benelux, Agora Films in Switzerland and Golem in Spain. Based on a true story, the film centres on Meaza Ashenafi, a young lawyer who operates under the government’s radar helping women and children in Ethiopia until one young girl’s legal case exposes everything, threatening not only her career but her survival. Films Boutique is licensing for French outfit Ad Vitam, which picked up world rights last week and will release in France. French rights on Competition title Macondo by Sudabeh Mortezai
The Match Factory has boarded international sales on Remainder, visual artist Omer Fast’s thriller currently in pre-production. Soda Pictures will distribute in the UK and Ireland; Piffl Medien has German rights. Tom Sturridge is set to star in the story, adapted from Tom McCarthy’s

Olivier, Leigh mini-series in the works BY ANDREAS WISEMAN
Legendary film couple Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh are the subject of a TV mini-series, which is being executive produced by the acclaimed actor’s son, Tarquin Olivier. London-based production company Ten Cent Adventures is in development on the four-hour series The Oliviers, about the life and love of the iconic British actors. Radioman producer Paul Fischer has written the scripts and will produce alongside Radioman director Mary Kerr under their Ten Cent Adventures banner. According to producers, a portion of the budget has already been raised through private investors while talks are under way with broadcasters and an A-list cast. A director has yet to be attached. Fischer has optioned books about the couple including Love Scene by Jesse Lasky and The Oliviers by Felix Barker. Multi-Oscar-winning stage and film actors Olivier (Rebecca, Hamlet) and Leigh (Gone With The Wind), who were married between 1940-60, were famed for their tempestuous relationship. “They went from matinee idols to national treasures together, from obscurity to gigantic fame, through jealousy, passion and illness,” Fischer told Screen. “What their love for one another brought out makes them even more engrossing.”

Sales agent Esther van Messel of First Hand Films added that “with bureaucratically closed borders, the future looks dim for the

Life Of Riley Reviewed by Dan Fainaru If the point of a film is to put a big smile on your face and have you walk out of the cinema feeling a bit better, having learned just that little bit more about your fellow men and women, then Alain Resnais’ latest film Life Of Riley (Aimer, Boire Et Chanter) does a splendid job. Granted, it is targeted first and foremost at cinephiles and adult audiences, who are most likely to recognise themselves in the film’s six characters or even maybe the seventh, Riley, who is at the heart of the story but never actually puts in an appearance. At the respectable age of 92, Resnais has the uncanny knack of reinventing himself with every new film, while working with the same basic material as well as many of his regular cast and crew. He never really departs from themes that have been close to his heart in recent years — whether it is juxtaposing life and art to the point where you cannot tell them apart, or the changing perspective on life as age settles in with the inevitable shadow of death lurking in the background. Once again, this is an adaptation of a play — for the third time in his career by UK playwright Alan Ayckbourn. It is set in the Yorkshire countryside, where three middle-aged couples are told that a dear friend of theirs, George Riley, might have only a few more months to live. They are Colin (Girardot), a not particularly astute country doctor, and his wife, Kathryn (Azéma), who was Riley’s lover in her youth; the philandering Jack (Vuillermoz), a businessman who considers himself to be Riley’s

oldest friend, and his spouse, Tamara (Silhol), who may be having an affair with Riley; and finally Riley’s ex-wife, Monica (Kiberlain), who had left him for a rustic farmer, Simeon (Dussollier). The action moves constantly between the gardens of four country houses. From a distance, the houses are just sketches, designed by comic-strip star Blutch, but up close these gardens look like stage sets with plastic curtains, allowing theatrical entrances for all six characters. No wonder, since Colin, Kathryn, Tamara and the never-seen George are rehearsing for an amateur stage production and it is never quite clear whether their dialogue is part of their rehearsals or for real. Or, more likely, whether it is both at the same time. George had been drawn into the play to keep his mind off his health, but whether he is dying or not, he is certainly capable of working his charms on all
three women, to the point that by the third act, all of them are keen to accept his invitation to accompany him on holiday to Tenerife, whatever their partners might think. Resnais, a master of form if ever there was one, combines elements that should not normally be put together, and shows how they can work despite all expectations. His camera observes his characters with great sympathy, whatever their foibles, without ever missing out on the slightly ridiculous, stagey edge of each part, particularly in evidence with the hyperactive, assertive Kathryn or in Jack’s theatrical despondency when he learns of his friend’s disease. An editor at heart, even after all these years Resnais never allows the action to linger needlessly, and with the same precision with which he has always developed his characters, never allows any of them to make a false step. The cast is all on top form, with Caroline Silhol offering a beautiful study of the worldly French wife who knows how to handle her husband’s fickleness, without relinquishing the possibility of a little fickleness herself. For all those who are tempted to shrug at the sight of the film and say it is nothing more than filmed theatre, Resnais’ intention is to look at all the things on stage that one never has the opportunity to focus on — one of the real achievements of this film. Incidentally, the French title is taken from the Gallic name of a famous Johann Strauss waltz, which accompanies every one of the film’s visits to Riley’s garden.

In Order Of Disappearance Reviewed by Mark Adams
Blind Massage
CoMpetition
Reviewed by Fionnuala Halligan Tui Na, the Chinese title of Blind Massage, is a form of therapy often practised in China’s medical massage centres for the blind. There are more than 50,000 licensed blind masseurs in China, and Bi Feiyu’s bestselling novel, which Ma Yingli has adapted for the big screen, focuses on the lives and loves of the practitioners in one such Nanjing centre. It is not difficult to figure out why Lou Ye (Mystery, Suzhou River) was technically attracted to this project, and his rich use of light and darkness helps create a strong visual ebb and flow, from jarring moments of high melodrama to the more gentle, blurred edges of love. With the book well-known in China, coupled with some bravura performances from his actors, Blind Massage stands to perform well in the local marketplace. International reaction may be more divided, however, with some likely to want a more coherent piece. While on the one hand, Lou abandons restraint to push the envelope visually in an exciting — if occasionally confusing — way, Blind Massage also has a tendency to trip over into high melodrama. With so many of the ensemble cast given a bloody resolution to their stories, Lou’s screenplay can often seem careless, throwing away the credibility he has worked so hard to earn. Blind Massage fields an ensemble cast including some sighted actors, notably Lou Ye’s regular collaborators Guo Xiaodong and Qin Hao. Spring Fever’s Huang Xuan and Huang Lu play the angry young blind boy Xiao Ma, who kicks off the film with a botched suicide attempt, and his prostitute lover, Mann. Mei Ting is Du Hong, the centre’s beautiful masseuse. They share scenes with blind actors including Zhang Lei, who has a natural ease. Guo and Qin play old college friends who are reunited at the centre. Dr Wang (Guo) has arrived in Nanjing with his partially sighted fiancée Kong, but their relationship is troubled — her parents will never accept a blind man as her husband, while his brother and parents are in trouble with loan sharks. Dr Sha (Qin), a hopeless romantic and poet in a fruitless search for love, falls hopelessly for Du Hong, who is attracted to Xiao Ma in a slightly soapy scenario. All stories will come to a violent resolution, though, as Lou’s camera drifts in and out of focus. “The blind are in the light, while the sighted hide in the shadows,” concludes the screenplay, and it is indeed a poignant observation. Lou’s camera illuminates and shades their existence in all their heightened emotions.

A delightfully droll tale of bloody revenge, Hans Petter Moland’s dark and funny In Order Of Disappearance (Kraftidioten) may well fit loosely into the much-hyped Nordic Noir bracket, but thanks to a series of nicely oddball performances and a plethora of killings it could even fall into Coen brothers or Tarantino territory. While perhaps not to all tastes — and possibly too mainstream for a Berlin Competition film — it is a delightfully sustained and engagingly absurd film that demands wide distribution and could just as easily be acquired for remake rights alone. The film marks the fourth collaboration between Moland and his lead actor, Stellan Skarsgard and, while hyped as an ‘action comedy’, it is far more a darkly funny crime tale that teeters on the edge of being a fully fledged underworld blood fest. Skarsgard plays his role of a snowplough driver out for revenge pretty straight, allowing those around him to revel in a series of nicely leftfield characters. The rather heavy-handed English title quite simply relates to the lengthy list of those who are killed during the film, which Moland cleverly — and rather amusingly — celebrates on screen with an intertitle of a cross and the dead character’s name each time a new one is bumped off. While funny for a while, it rather overstays its welcome, but is indicative of the often-playful nature of this quite bloody crime tale. In wintery rural Norway, mild-mannered, hard-working Nils Dickman (Skarsgard), who has recently been voted the community’s ‘man of the year’, is mortified when his son dies of a drugs overdose. But when he finds the young man was murdered by a drugs gang because of his inadvertent involvement in a drugs scam, Nils opts to take revenge. His investigations bring him into contact with a series of lackeys for a gangster, the Count (Sverre Hagen), a longhaired vegan eccentric who make juices for his henchman and provides them with take-away coffee when they are torturing a rival. As the body count rises he gets closer to the Count, but after a botched attempt to hire a hitman to kill him, Nils decides to kidnap the Count’s son as a way of forcing him out into the snowy countryside that Nils knows best. While Skarsgard plays his role admirably straight — which suits his quiet, straight persona — around him there is a lot of dark fun to be had. Whether it is the gay relationship between two of the Count’s mobsters; the local policemen who cannot stand the sight of blood; or the Serbian mobsters frolicking like children in the snow, dark humour permeates this playfully droll crime film.

A Long Way Down Reviewed by Mark Adams For a film about suicide, there is a whole lot of warmth and heart to Pascal Chaumeil’s comedydrama, A Long Way Down, a charmingly played film about how life can offer up a second chance at the most unlikely of moments and unexpected friendships can offer fresh perspectives. The film offers engagingly complex roles for Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots and Aaron Paul, and while a tough sell to audiences (suicide comedy, anyone?) it is well worth the cinematic ride. Adapted from Nick Hornby’s bestselling novel, which may help marketing profile, the film is nicely structured as it tackles the doom-and-gloom surrounding its four lead characters, delivering a subtle blend of genres as its tragic and comic aspects combine while some of the big issues of life are played out. Quite how the four deeply dysfunctional individuals become the most unlikely of support groups is the rather tender core of A Long Way Down. The film opens with Martin Sharp (Brosnan), a disgraced television presenter, seeing his life fall apart after he had sex with a girl a few months shy of her 16th birthday (“She looked 25 to me”, he insists). He straps a ladder to the roof of his car on New Year’s Eve and heading to Toppers Tower, an anonymous London office block notorious as a suicide hotspot. The ladder — which he has to walk up to the roof — is to lay across three feet of barb-wire netting around the outside of the roof. He lights a cigar and heads to the edge of the ladder. The Dark Valley Reviewed by Jonathan Romney There’s trouble up in them thar hills… except the hills are the Tyrol, and this Western happens to be Austrian. But The Dark Valley (Das Finstere Tal) isn’t quite such a bizarre proposition — not when you think of the geographical similarities between Austria and classic oater terrain such as Colorado — or indeed, when you think of the Austrian tradition of mountain films, of which Andreas Prochaska’s feature provides a genre variant. Intermittently entertaining, The Dark Valley scores highly on magnificent photography and atmosphere, but loses on limp storytelling and an overall stolidity in its prestige-costumer ambitions. Despite some elegance, the film is unlikely to travel much outside German-speaking territories, and it lacks the swagger to score at fests as a midnightmovie favourite. Set in a distant high region of the Tyrol in the 19th century, The Dark Valley begins with a precredit sequence in which a young couple in hiding are hunted down by a malevolent posse. Thereafter, a young local named Luzi (Beer, a candid ingénue) takes up the narrative in a portentous voiceover. Things kick off properly years later when a mysterious black-hatted stranger rides into Luzi’s village and requests digs for the winter. He announces himself as Greider (Riley), over from America and supposedly in the area to take photographs. Moving in as a lodger with the girl and her

Sadly their story makes the press, though their desire to stay bonded is not helped by Jess’s comment that up on the roof a naked angel that looked
just like Matt Damon had decreed “thou shalt not die tonight” and stopped them from jumping. To escape attention the four take a trip to Spain, and gradually get to know each other better, though it all ends badly when it is revealed JJ’s reasons for wanting to kill himself are more deep-rooted than he first explained. It is a bold story about fractured individuals, with suicide and depression the unlikely subjects for dark comedy. Playing a self-pitying paedophile is a brave choice for Brosnan, and while he is the ‘star’, the film is very much a four-hander, with each actor delivering intelligently nuanced performances. Thoughtfully directed, A Long Way Down defies expectations and delivers an impressively life-affirming message.
mother, Greider quickly incurs the dislike of the clan of thugs — old man Brenner and his six boys — who rule the region with, it turns out, more than just your average rod of iron. It is not long before two Brenners die mysterious and bloody deaths — one of them in the film’s best sequence, a tense and atmospheric snowbound scene involving tobogganing logs. It is pretty easy to guess who is responsible — and it is not long before Greider enters the local church like Gary Cooper striding into the Dodge City saloon, and insists on confessing to the priest. The film is certainly handsome enough — the stranger-in-town theme played out in visuals that
suggest High Plains Drifter with a dash of painter Caspar David Friedrich. There are also some intriguing thematic overtones that are not brought out to full advantage — the Catholicism, a strong streak of Freud (this is an Austrian film, after all), as well as echoes of 20th-century history in the picture of a community in sway to a Nazi-like tyranny. But the drama barely breathes, not least because of flat characterisation. And, while British lead Sam Riley exudes a candid straight-arrow quality reminiscent of Kyle MacLachlan, he somewhat lacks the sheer steeliness you look for in a blackhatted man on a mission. Some of the musical choices, too, are misguidedly anachronistic.

REVIEWS
The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came To Eden Reviewed by Mark Adams
Things People Do Reviewed by Fionnuala Halligan The end credits on film editor Saar Klein’s directorial debut pay “special thanks” to his mentor, Terrence Malick, but the tribute is not really necessary: Klein’s debt is writ large on-screen throughout Things People Do, a seductively flawed tale of the middle-class American dream gone adrift in the desert. The film’s finely calibrated rhythms, impressionistic visuals and repeated motifs pray an attractive hymn to the man Klein worked with on The Thin Red Line and Tree Of Life, and the result is an intriguing, occasionally haunting work of some power where the ethereal visuals ultimately threaten to overpower a more grounded narrative. Israeli-born, German-national Klein sits his film on the arid edges of the New Mexico desert, where his isolated characters maintain a tenuous grip on their lives. There, in the quasi-wilderness, he switches between the oblique visual style of his mentor and the more linear pursuits of a morality play, but the two components do not always gel. Much rides on the shoulders of Wes Bentley as nice guy Bill Scanlin, a debt-ridden insurance adjustor and father of two who, we learn, has been let go from his job — although he keeps up the day-to-day pretence of normality in front of his family. A key motif in the film is a swimming pool that Bill has installed in this drought zone, for which he borrowed $40,000; it is a stunning, repetitive visual, emblematic of Bill’s poor decision-making. Bill is a straight-up guy, too nice for the dog-eat-dog world in which he is trying to live (in fact, he seems to identify with a stray dog in the desert). With a complicated family background — his father, a cop on the take, committed suicide, while his rich father-in-law considers him inferior — Bill places great emphasis on honesty. He wants to be a stand-up man, but is being tested to the point of no return in a society where there is no quarter given to those who stumble. A chance meeting with a police detective in a bowling alley gives Bill a friendship that is a little more shaded. Frank (Isaacs) says, “I don’t make judgments,” which is helpful, because a suicidal Bill is about to make a series of very bad choices, starting with an accidental hold-up in a show home and escalating to armed robbery. Producers Sarah Green and Hans Graffunder, like Klein, have worked extensively with Malick, while cinematographer Matthias Königswieser makes a noteworthy feature debut here. Music, from Marc Streitenfeld, also calls to mind Malick, with Chopin, Bach, even Bizet featuring in a string-based score. Locations are vividly memorable — even though they are shot through Königswieser’s bleached lens — and Chad Keith’s production design is also a star.

At the highly charged dramatic core of Dayna Goldfine and Dan Geller’s intriguing documentary, there is a dramatic feature-film version crying out to be remade. Sex, violence, bitter conflict and an unresolved murder mystery are the defining aspects of its story of how a plan to set up a new life in a idyllic island location goes so badly wrong. The film, which has been shorn of some nine minutes since its first screening at Telluride Film Festival, may be rather too padded with tangentially linked contemporary interviews, but at its heart is some wonderful material and a gripping real-life story. The film should interest buyers (it has been picked up by Zeitgeist for the US) as well as other film festivals. The voice casting of top talents such as Cate Blanchett, Thomas Kretschmann, Diane Kruger and Connie Nielsen will also be appealing. Goldfine and Geller — who made acclaimed doc Ballets Russes — focus on an idealistic plan in 1929 by 43-year-old Berlin physician Friedrich Ritter, who left his wife and brought his younger lover, the also married Dore Strauch, to live in isolation on Floreana, one of the Galapagos Islands. He was determined they should live off the land, though she was not as physically able to cope with the rigours of their new life. Home-film footage, photographs and newspaper accounts of their new life provide a vivid glimpse into this Eden — a solitary paradise that was interrupted by new arrivals. First were rather staid married couple Heinz Wittmer, his pregnant wife Margret and their teenage son, Harry, who appeared three years later, inspired by what they had read about Ritter. Ritter just about managed to put up with them, but the relative harmony of island life was thrown into disarray with the arrival of the so-called Austrian Baroness Eloise von Wagner Bosquet and her gigolos, Robert and Rudolf. She was a personality of epic proportions, and while hardly beautiful she brimmed with sensuality and relished her unconventional sexual arrangement. Following a drought in 1934, there were a series of fatal incidents and people vanished from the island never to be seen again — prompting one interviewee to say it would take Sherlock Holmes to solve the mystery. The fact the character voiceovers are handled by actors such as Blanchett (Strauch), Kretschmann (Friedrich Ritter), Kruger (Margret Wittmer) and Connie Nielsen (the Baroness) gives the film an additional edge. It veers into melodrama at times, and there is a niggling sense that modern-day interviews with tangentially linked locals provides rather distracting padding when what the viewer wants is the story of Ritter, the Baroness and their fractured Eden.

INTERVIEW WIM WENDERS AND ROBERT REDFORD
TEAM BUILDING Wim Wenders and Robert Redford speak exclusively with Martin Blaney about their 3D architecture film Cathedrals Of Culture
The Salk Institute in La Jolla, California (Robert Redford)
Berlin Philharmonic in Berlin (Wim Wenders)
hree years ago, Wim Wenders presented his homage to legendary choreographer Pina Bausch in the 3D feature documentary Pina as an out of competition screening at the Berlinale. He returns here with another 3D project, Cathedrals Of Culture, in the Berlinale Special sidebar, in collaboration with five other filmmakers who pose the question: “If buildings could talk, what would they say about us?” While Wenders did not have far to go to portray the Berlin Philharmonic in his film, Austria’s Michael Glawogger travelled to St Petersburg for the Russian National Library and Denmark’s Michael Madsen picked the ground-breaking Halden Prison in Norway. The Salk Institute in California’s La Jolla came under the spotlight of actor-directorproducer Robert Redford, while Norwegian film-maker Margreth Olin chose the Opera House in Oslo and Brazil’s Karim Ainouz — in this year’s Competition with Praia Do Futuro — followed a day in the life of the Pompidou Centre in Paris. As Wenders explains, the choice of directors was made by the producers Gian-Piero Ringel and Erwin M Schmidt at Neue Road Movies and the editorial line for the six films was defined by a 3D video installation, If Buildings Could Talk, Wenders had made for the Architecture Biennale in Venice. “With Cathedrals Of Culture, we wanted to reverse the traditional narrative perspective of architecture films and develop a new access to these amazing buildings by letting them speak for themselves,” he says. “We

’[Shooting in 3D] was to complement the basic concept rather than being the sole reason’ Robert Redford
wanted to explore their soul, not architectural facts. “One of the main goals of the project was to explore 3D as a visual language, and to allow a group of different film-makers to make use of this medium in their very own way. If there were any particular challenges, then [they were] mostly the conceptual difficulty of creating six different films by six directors about six different buildings, and still let them share a basic idea and belong together and form a unity.” Deciding on the Berlin Philharmonic for his episode was “a short and sweet process”, he recalls. “I wanted to cover a building in Berlin. And I wanted to have an emotional access to it. I wanted to do justice to the building. But the more I got to know it, the more complex it became. Every day, I saw new aspects of it and in the end, after five days of shooting, I felt I’d only scratched the surface.” When Wenders called Redford to join the project, the veteran actor-director was “obviously intrigued by the idea of making a film about a building that speaks to you”. Initially, Redford says, he considered the IM Pei-

designed National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, “but then everything came together when I thought of the Salk Institute [of Biological Studies] because I’d grown up nearby and remember seeing the building being constructed. “When I looked at the archival footage of the architect Louis I Kahn and Jonas Salk, I could see what brilliant men they were and how they came together to create this iconic building,” Redford explains. “That became the heart of my film; and the fact that the building is full of geometric angles except for the space going through the middle into infinity in the sea. I wanted to try and romanticise these angles and also see how the inside and outside of the building came together. “When I started interviewing the scientists, the project took on a life of its own because I realised the connection between them and the building was much deeper than I ever expected. I could see there was an organic relationship.” Apart from Wenders and Madsen, the other film-makers on Cathedrals Of Culture had no prior experience of filming in 3D, but Redford stresses that, for him, shooting in 3D was “to complement the basic concept rather than being the sole reason”. He adds: “I chose Ed Lachman as cinematographer because he has an experimental side, he’s not afraid to try anything and this would be a challenge that he would jump at. Being a challenge for both of us would be a good adventure and it was a very s productive relationship.” ■
