Frankie Muniz, Virginia Madsen and Ian McShane will star in Boris Damast’s comedy Road To Capri, set to commence principal photography in the US and Italy in the spring. US-based Mechaniks, EMovies and Rainstorm are producing with world sales agent Atlas International. Road To Capri centres on two men who learn they share the same father and have inherited the family home in Capri. Giancarlo Giannini, Maria Grazia Cucinotta and Nicolas Vaporidis round out the key cast. Blake Armstrong, Giovanni Labadessa and Damast co-wrote the screenplay. Producers are Andrea Kikot of Mechaniks, Max Czertok of EMovies and Stefan Menz of Atlas International Film. Steve G Kaplan of Rainstorm Entertainment served as executive producer alongside Carol Bidault and Andrea Giannattasio from EMovies.

It was the warmest of Berlins; it was the coolest of Berlins. As the EFM began to wind down this week, only the mild weather offered succour to the lack of heat in the market. The proximity of the holidays and Sundance routinely makes preparing for Berlin a perplexing time, and this year there were fewer marquee titles on offer than usual. Nonetheless the low number of must-haves, which included FilmNation’s The Whole Truth, IM Global’s Labor Of Love, K5’s Vice and QED International’s Rock The Kasbah, did not preclude a sustainable if unflashy volume of trade. The hottest talking points included the plight of Exclusive Media, with continued speculation to dominate conversations in the weeks to come, while The Weinstein Company swooped in a $7m pre-emptive deal for potential Oscar contender The Imitation Game. The out-of-competition screening of Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac Vol 1 director’s cut was always

going to get tongues wagging and did not disappoint. The Dane’s omerta and choice in T-shirts drew wry smiles, but it was the shenanigans of Shia LaBeouf that snatched the limelight from a talented ensemble that continued to support the film with dignity and good humour. EFM attendance was up in terms of exhibitors and visitors. Business bubbled up here and there. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions was active, licensing territories from XYZ Films to Kevin Smith’s Tusk and taking a slew of rights from fledgling Fortitude International to The End Of The Tour. Fortitude struck a key produc-
tion deal with management company Untitled Entertainment. The Exchange CEO Brian O’Shea expressed pleasure about delivering a number of titles, including two backed by its Exchange Peaks Film Capital fund, Swelter and The Last 5 Years. FilmNation CEO Glen Basner, whose sales titles at EFM were The Whole Truth, Sing Street and A Most Violent Year, said: “Arriving at the market with three very distinctive films, we anticipated having one of our strongest markets yet, and the brisk sales on all three demonstrated just that.” Many international buyers complained of slim pickings as usual, although there was plenty of interest in Altitude’s Blood Mountain. WestEnd closed deals on The Great Gilly Hopkins and Michael Winterbottom’s The Face Of An Angel. Acquisitions executives were impressed too with the fresh slates of Protagonist and HanWay. Gaumont, Bac and Films Distribution were among the French companies reporting strong sales.

Spotlight Pictures has boarded sales for romantic comedy Hit By Lightning starring Jon Cryer. The story centres on a bachelor who meets the perfect woman, except that she wants him to kill her husband. Stephanie Szostak and Will Sasso star. Ricky Blitt wrote and directed the feature, which Chantal Chamandy produced through her Chantal Chamandy Entertainment label. Mike Ades served as executive producer. “This is a hilarious film that hits all the right beats,” said Spotlight CEO Matt McCombs. “We are thrilled to be working with Matt and everyone at Spotlight as they share my belief that our film has global audience appeal since laughter is universal,” added Chamandy. Carlos Rincon brokered the Hit By Lightning deal for Spotlight with Chamandy.

Wide inks US, Canada deal on The Circle BY ANDREAS WISEMAN
French documentary specialist Wide House has sold all US and Canadian rights to Panorama Documentary entry The Circle (Der Kreis) to WolfeVideo. The 1950s-set docudrama, directed by Stefan Haupt, follows a young teacher who falls for the transvestite star of a renowned underground club run by network The Circle, a pioneering organisation for gay emancipation in postwar Europe. The busy Wide House yesterday inked an additional deal on Kenneth Elvebakk’s ballet doc Ballet Boys for Japan (Uplink) after closing France (ZED), the UK (Matchbox) and Germany (CMV Laservision) earlier in the market. The Great Museum was picked up for France (Jour2Fete), Japan (DOMA Inc) and the UK (Matchbox). Snail doc Slow has gone to Italian distributor Biograph.
FilmNation develops deal with Faliro House FilmNation Entertainment and Faliro House Productions, backed by Greek film financier and producer Christos V Konstantakopoulos, have struck a two-year development fund deal, announced here in Berlin yesterday and effective immediately. The companies expect to use the
fund to develop four to eight projects annually, all of which will be financed under FilmNation’s existing credit facility. The companies said the deal will allow FilmNation to further expand its strategy of acquiring early-stage, high-profile properties in development, while broadening

Eye on Films to add Cinecliq channel by Martin blaney
The Eye on Films (EoF) global network is to have its own standalone VoD channel on New Yorkbased Cinecliq “in the next couple of months”, the initiative’s president Loic Magneron revealed in Berlin yesterday morning. The US-based transactional VoD platform, which is integrated with many social-media sites including Facebook, had already been a partner with EoF since 2012 on its I Love Mondays initiative, which organises a free sneak preview the first Monday evening of each month before the VoD launch of a film in France, Canada, the UK and the US. The other partners in I Love Mondays are Dailymotion, LoveMyVOD and Realeyz.tv. The first season in 2013 attracted more

that would offer a selection of more than 60 films from Wide’s catalogue in simultaneous releases on VoD and into cinemas. Looking back at the first three years of EoF’s operations, Magneron noted that more than 50 first films had been selected for distribution by the network’s festival, distributor or VoD platform partners. EoF titles showing at this year’s Berlinale include Tamar van den Dop’s Supernova in Generation 14plus, in which she also stars, and Peter Krüger’s N — The Madness Of Reason in Forum.

The inaugural selection from RAM Releasing — Film Movement’s genre division — includes Moebius and Hide And Seek. Leading the 2014 pipeline are Bobby Boermans’ Dutch secondscreen thriller App on May 9 and South Korean Kim Ki-duk’s extreme family drama, Moebius, in late July. The sister labels will co-release two titles theatrically in the form of Wiktor Ericsson’s documentary about porn auteur Joe Sarno in The Sarnos: A Life In Dirty Movies in June and Manuel Martin Cuen-
ca’s romance, Cannibal, in July. Rounding out the RAM slate are Nate Taylor’s psychodrama Forgetting The Girl and Huh Jung’s South Korean box-office hit Hide And Seek on home video on April 1 and April 8, respectively. “After more than a decade in this business, we’d seen again and again these genre films of exceptional quality with no place to put them within Film Movement’s established brand,” said VP of acquisitions and distribution Rebeca Conget. “We developed RAM Releasing as our answer to this opportunity
— a home for the edgier, darker films just as deserving of distribution as some of our more mainstream titles.” Film Movement president Adley Gartenstein said he had not ruled out extra RAM releases for the rest of the year. “We’ll see how it goes,” said Gartenstein. “We know there’s an audience for these films, and if we find the right one as we continue our global acquisitions efforts, we’ll do everything we can to facilitate bringing the films to North American audiences sooner rather than later.”

Distributor Wrekin Hill is understood to have paid seven figures for North American rights to TeamTO and Haut et Court’s 3D animated feature, Yellowbird. SC Films International represents sales. Christian De Vita’s film, now in production, is a coming-of-age story about a teenage bird. Antoine Barraud and Guilhem Lesaffre wrote the screenplay with Cory Edwards. Seth Green, Dakota Fanning, Danny Glover, Elliott Gould, Jim Rash and Christine Baranski are among the voice cast. Wrekin Hill will release the film in theatres this autumn. CFO/ FOO Rene Cogan and director of acquisitions Alex Mandell brokered the deal with Simon Crowe for UK-based SC Films. “We believe Yellowbird will capture the imagination of children, teens and adults alike,” said Wrekin Hill president and CEO Chris Ball. “It is a beautifully written story about the power of self-discovery and community that will surely take audiences on an incredible emotional journey. With films like Frozen and The Nut Job showing strength at the US box office, it is clear there is a real hunger for satisfying family entertainment.”

Korea’s Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) has appointed Jangwan Pyeon, head of Korea National University of Arts’ School of Film, TV & Multimedia, as the festival’s new chief programmer. Pyeon has been a member of PiFan’s organising committee since 2010. Following the quiet exit of longtime PiFan programmer Jin Park last year, Pyeon will be handling European programming. He joins a programming team of Alice Yoo, whose focus is Asia; and Sangho Rhee, whose focus is the Americas; along with Jongsuk Thomas Nam, managing director of the Network of Asian Fantastic Films, which includes PiFan’s project market and training workshop.

Connelly flies high with Aloft BY GEOFFREY MACNAB
Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Connelly certainly gets her hands dirty in Claudia Llosa’s Competition entry Aloft, picked up early in the market by Sony Pictures Classics for the US and Latin America. The opening scene of the film, being sold here by Dreamcatchers and set to premiere today, shows the actress with her hands covered in blood as she helps deliver a piglet. Connelly plays a mother with a deadbeat job on a farm, who is doing her best for her two sons in difficult circumstances. “I was shooting a scene in the other room when the sow was in labour,” Connelly recalls. “It’s someone else pulling the piglet but by the time I got there they were hoping there was still another piglet [to be born]. I tried for one. I did have my hands in there.” Aloft is a departure for Connelly. It’s an austere drama in which her
character is tough, emotionally complex but not always sympathetic, least of all in her dealings with her sons, Gully and Ivan. Connelly doesn’t set out to ‘sell’ the character to the audience by softening her in any way. “I felt she was the type of character that might be harshly judged for her actions,” Connelly says. “Being approachable and affectionate and warm towards her son Ivan is really not her strength… It was a bold choice to put a character like that at the centre of a film.” Aloft was shot in Winnipeg, Canada, in circumstances very different to some of her bigger budget films. The schedule was tight. “Working on a movie like [Darren Aronofsky’s] Noah, you start shooting in August and you’re still filming in November. This movie I had only a few weeks to shoot.” The crew was fairly small. Nonetheless, she describes work-

ing with Peruvian director Llosa — a Golden Bear winner for The Milk Of Sorrow — as one of the most rewarding experiences of her career. “What stood out for me while making this film with Claudia was how incredibly fulfilled I felt… I felt so happy to be doing it.” Having made Aloft, Connelly went on to star in her husband Paul Bettany’s directorial debut Shelter, sold by Voltage. This film,
described by Connelly as “a love story”, was made on an even lower budget. She plays a woman sleeping rough in New York, who falls for a homeless Nigerian man (Anthony Mackie). Connelly talks of the rush to shoot a set number of script pages each day. By contrast, Aronofsky’s Noah is a film on a huge scale. She first worked with the director on Requiem For A Dream and clearly relished the chance to appear in
Noah, which she describes as both biblical epic and closely focused family drama. And, no, there won’t be any piglets for her to deal with this time round. “There were no live animals used on the Ark,” she confirms. Connelly is now between roles. “I had done a string of films back to back, [Akiva Goldsman’s] Winter’s Tale then Noah then Aloft and then Shelter. I just had to take a little break.”

The Two Faces Of January Reviewed by Fionnuala Halligan The award-winning writer Hossein Amini (The Wings Of The Dove, Drive) makes his directorial debut with a taut, elegant adaptation of a lesser known 1964 Patricia Highsmith novel, The Two Faces Of January. Amini positively embraces the spirit of Alfred Hitchcock, from content to period style to ‘the blonde’, to deliver a quiet thoroughbred for the StudioCanal/Working Title stable, which has produced both Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Constant Gardener, and should seduce exactly the same audience with smooth precision. Adapting the complex novel himself, Amini has turned its close relationship with Strangers On A Train and The Talented Mr Ripley to his advantage, pushing off from Hitchcock and Anthony Minghella to try his own hand at the double-crisscross through Europe. He knows their earlier works shadow his characters onscreen, but this film is still unpredictable and emotionally rich. This is in no small part due to Viggo Mortensen and Oscar Isaac as the Highsmith doppelgangers (with Isaac more than consolidating his star turn from Inside Llewyn Davis). Kirsten Dunst also hits all the right notes with restraint. The Two Faces Of January is certainly a looker, set in 1962 Greece and Turkey, shot crisply by Marcel Zyskind and scored with restraint by Alberto Iglesias. The locations, of course — with the opportunity for 1960s set dressing and costumes against the backdrop of the Acropolis and Knossos — are a Hitchcockian dream for the art department and immediately set the spirit of the piece.

Handsome young American Rydal Keener (Isaac) is a Greek-speaking tour guide in Athens, content with skimming money from US exchange students, when he spots the elegant couple Chester and Colette MacFarland (Mortensen and Dunst) at the Parthenon. Rydal is initially attracted to the suave, worldly Chester but also to his much younger wife. Rydal becomes willingly embroiled with the couple, and inadvertently complicit in a death that may or may not be murder. Bit by bit, Chester reveals his true colours and Rydal finds himself more and more compromised as the trio flees to Crete and across the Greek countryside in a bus in the full heat of summer. You would not wish to be part of this road trip, however, and Rydal will need to up his game to survive. It is not certain whether anyone in The Two Faces
Of January ever completely shows their cards, and it is this delicious ambiguity that propels the film across Crete and into Turkey, with the pursuit really hotting up in Istanbul. This is played out delicately by the actors, with Mortensen’s increasingly dishevelled desperation and cunning counter-balanced by Isaac’s open-faced duplicity. Originally optioned by producer Tom Sternberg (The Talented Mr Ripley) and briefly set up at Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella’s Mirage — both are acknowledged in the credits — for Amini to direct, The Two Faces Of January eventually shot in autumn 2012, premiering this week here at the Berlinale. That is quite a delay, but this project has clearly been handled with care throughout its half-century-long journey from the page to screen, and many should find it was worth the wait.

20,000 Days On Earth Reviewed by David D’arcy Nick Cave says he isn’t interested in things that he understands. Yet this distillation of the man himself — reflective, sensitive and inventive — tells you much about an artist’s understanding of his art. 20,000 Days On Earth suggests a diary of the rock tour from hell, a subject Cave knows very well. Instead, most of the hybrid doc-drama is intimate, with enough performance and fireworks to remind you of the subject, who happens to be speaking softly about his parents and his childhood. Cave’s fans all over the world are sure to swarm to this film. Once early reviews and word of mouth spreads, snobs who would never go near a rock doc will also see it. Richly textured, the portrait is also a valuable calling card for Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, both artists and feature first-timers who previously worked with Cave on music videos. The film-makers’ conceit is that they are presenting 24 hours in the life of their subject, a kid from rural Australiaturned-rock phenomenon whose skeletal frame and shoepolish black hair make him look vampiric. Cave is game for this approach, sounding oracular and refreshingly honest — for a much-interviewed celeb — as he turns the boilerplate subject of songwriting into a discourse on what makes us human. Memory, he says, is what we are, confessing that his greatest fear is losing his capacity to probe his past and draw from it. Cave is not religious, but he did believe in God when he was a junkie, or so he claims, attending services and then leaving to meet his dealers. Like the best raconteurs, he can tell a yarn without being a blowhard. Performance, he explains, is the closest thing to religious experience, in which time stands still as he shares truths about himself. In concert clips, we do not see any disagreement from the audience. It is difficult to tell whether Cave and company are engaging in documentary or docu-mythology, but each story that Cave tells — or preaches — does carry a lesson. For a rock portrait — a genre this doc seeks to transcend — Forsythe, Pollard and cinematographer Erik Wilson deployed a welcome variety of textures — studio scenes, live shows, Cave writing at a (heaven forbid) typewriter, long sequences with collaborator Warren Ellis, even a scene of Cave watching Scarface with two blue-eyed sons who look like archetypal British public-school lads. In 20,000 Days, Cave has added cinema to his expanding arsenal of modes of expression. It is difficult to believe his team will stop here. In one of his many moral appeals, Cave advises the slackers out there not to waste a moment of the day. He is probably already writing a sequel.

“What have we become?” asks Pomme, heroine of If You Don’t, I Will (Arrete Ou Je Continue). “Your parents,” sniffs her husband. That sums up one of the curious characteristics of Sophie Fillieres’ wry marital comedy-drama, and its theme of young generations settling into comfortable middle age. In the 1990s, actors Emmanuelle Devos and Mathieu Amalric were at the forefront of a wave of young performers associated with up-and-coming directors such as Arnaud Desplechin; today they are such well-loved faces on the French screen that their very presence functions as a reassuring stamp of quality. This situation will certainly benefit Fillieres’ film both at the domestic box-office and on the export market, but it also betokens a certain middle-aged cosiness and familiarity. This well-turned film from the maker of Gentille and Un Chat Un Chat is intelligent and passably witty, but not remotely cutting-edge. The leads play a Lyon-based couple, Pomme and Pierre, who after many years together are finding the magic is fading — and much tension gathering in the cracks. Life seems a routine business of meeting old friends, exercising together and taking occasional woodland hikes. But Pierre seems permanently testy, and to be spending an inordinate amount of time with young TV newswoman Mettie (de la Baume). Meanwhile, Pomme has recently been operated on for a benign brain tumour but, in between contemplating her return to work and fussing over her young adult son (Delapalme), is finding the demands of life and fading love too much to handle. When a hiking weekend does not turn out as planned, she ditches Pierre and — in an improbable move on which the film has to stand or fall — takes to the woods for an extended spell of sleeping rough among the elements. If you can believe Pierre simply shrugging off the situation while Pomme sleeps on logpiles or down holes in the ground — at one point, wrestling with a confused chamois goat — then you will have overcome the main obstacle to seeing the film as a bundle of mature wit and charm. There is certainly plenty to like besides the performances — elegant design, relaxed pace and some gorgeous, low-key outdoor visuals. There are few surprises, but the two stars are in fine fettle, if not on their edgiest form. The normally likeable Amalric gives a creepier turn than usual as the self-absorbed Pierre, while Devos — who arguably scored a career-to-date best in last year’s literary biopic, Violette — is unfailingly watchable. This is a very physical performance, with pratfalls and nude scenes alike, but she also gives a nervy spin to the less-is-more ethic, playing vulnerably deadpan to eloquent and winning effect.
