The biggest of its kind in Asia, the Hong Kong Entertainment Expo brings together the worlds of film, TV, music and digital entertainment at the same time in the same enterprising place. A key component of the Expo, of course, is Filmart (March 23-26), the place to be for every international buyer looking for Asian product and every sales company keen to sell to Asian territories. Fitting snugly between Berlin’s European Film Market and Cannes, it’s a place where conversations are started and new contacts are forged. Check inside these pages for a first glimpse of the hot titles at this year’s Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), including new work from up-andcoming directors that’s being produced by some of the region’s most dynamic figures, from Terence Chang

echnology may have made the world smaller, and online viewing platforms and Skype should in theory have limited the need for buyers and sellers to troop around the world each year to expensive trade fairs and film markets. But Hong Kong Filmart (March 23-26) is one of those events people want to attend in person. If you need to do business with the fastemerging Southeast Asian markets, it makes sense to go to Filmart. One of the companies you would not be able to meet anywhere else is Singapore-based producer and distributor Clover Films. It distributes 25 Asian titles a year for Singapore and 12 for Malaysia, and produces two to three features a year. “We have not visited Berlin or Cannes for the past five years and do not intend to do so as Filmart serves all our purposes,” says Lim Teck, managing director of Clover Films. “Filmart gives us the opportunity to meet sellers of Asian content as well as buyers of our productions.” For many years, access to the huge mainland China market has been the headline reason many international — particularly western — buyers and sellers attend. But China’s strict distribution quotas on foreign films that are not official co-productions means much of the actual business done at Filmart with Chinese companies tends to be TV and library content acquired by broadcasters and online companies such as Youku and iQiyi. In fact, where working with China is concerned, Filmart can be more about intelligence gathering and making contacts. So nascent is China’s entertainment market that Filmart attracts many would-be Chinese investors and film producers, new to the film business,

who are keen to introduce themselves to international sales agents. “Lots of new Chinese companies have started attending Filmart so it’s become the place to meet new people for me,” says Emico Kawai, head of international sales at Japanese studio Nikkatsu, who attends under the UniJapan banner. “But not much business may come from that. It’s more about introducing our product or the company itself.” Filmart has established itself as a vital Asian market for Asian film companies buying and selling film, TV, digital entertainment and animation. Strategically placed between the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin around six weeks earlier and Cannes six weeks later, it gives the opportunity for bigger Asian sales companies to focus on those regional relationships. “Asian buyers are our biggest buyers, particularly those from Chinese mainland, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong,” says Jamie Shin, assistant manager, international department, at South Korea’s United Pictures. Many smaller Asian buyers and sellers do not attend EFM in particular, due partly to its proximity to the Chinese New Year holiday. “Filmart is the first market in the year for us and has become very important,” says Amy Iamphungphorn, executive director and head of international sales at Thai studio Five Star Production. “It has films and TV together so we can sell a lot of our content all at once.” Five Star, which sells mainly its own productions, is renowned for its horror titles. But censorship and quotas make it virtually impossible to sell horror theatrically into China itself, although there are opportunities to sell the less violent horror titles to online mainland buyers.
‘Lots of new Chinese companies have started attending Filmart. It’s become the place to meet new people’ Emico Kawai, Nikkatsu
“I go to Filmart because of all the other Asian countries we can sell to,” says Iamphungphorn. “Our biggest buyers are Japan, Korea, the Chinesespeaking territories of Hong Kong and Taiwan, and Russia and the CIS, which is always looking for 3D horror titles. The growing market for us is Indochina, the territories of Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Vietnam.” Five Star always brings new product to Filmart, as it will to Cannes. For Iamphungphorn, Filmart is too short and she always finds herself overbooked. “We don’t attend TV markets so we have a lot of business to do at Filmart.”
The big draw According to the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), which organises Filmart as part of Hong Kong’s umbrella event Entertainment Expo, more exhibitors (over 770) and visitors (about 7,000) than ever will attend Filmart. Projects from some of Asia’s leading film-makers have been selected for the 13th Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum. By Liz Shackleton Terence Chang, Philippe Bober and Naomi Kawase are among the producers of the 30 projects selected for this year’s HAF (March 23-25). Bober, one of Europe’s most respected producers and distributors, is teaming with award-winning Chinese director Lou Ye to produce Riddle from Zhou Hao, whose debut The Night screened at Berlinale 2014. Chang, the longtime producing partner of John Woo, is co-producing coming-of-age drama That Summer, to be directed by new mainland Chinese talent Zhou Quan. Meanwhile, Kawase is serving as producer on a project to be directed by Cuba’s Carlos Machado Quintela, which is being made in collaboration with Nara International Film Festival. The HAF line-up also includes five projects from Hong Kong film-makers of different generations. Following Doomsday Party, Ho Hong is returning to HAF with suspense drama Lost In Border, while Gilitte Leung is attending for the first time with

inspirational sports drama Breathing. Among other established industry figures nurturing projects from new talents are Subi Liang, Pang Ho Cheung’s producing partner, who is producing Luk Yee-sum’s directorial debut, Lazy Hazy Crazy ; and Academy Award-winning documentary film-maker Ruby Yang, who will co-produce Stephen Gurie Woo’s documentary The Last Stitch. Award-winning Hong Kong New Wave director Yim Ho will present big-budget epic Nanking Xmas.1937, which will be produced by industry veteran Ng See-yuen and is one of the biggest projects selected for HAF. The line-up also includes the three finalists of the HAF/Fox Chinese Film Development Award: Leon Sun’s drama My Last Wish; suspense drama Unexpected And Ambiguous from Zhou Hongbo; and Yu Sen-I’s comedy My Beauty Queen Mom, which has also been selected for the main HAF line-up.
exhibition space than ever and a growing industry events schedule will feature more than 70 programmes including six conferences focusing on film, TV, digital entertainment and music. Through its 44 branch offices around the world, including 13 in China, HKTDC has reached out to new buyers from emerging markets for Asian films including India, Indonesia, Russia, South Africa and United Arab Emirates. “One of the key deliverables is bringing quality buyers to our show. That is critical to our exhibitors,” says Jenny Koo, director, service promotion for HKTDC. “While we have to keep our loyal buyers returning each year, we have to identify new buyers from new distribution platforms or channels and enlist them to attend.”
action packed For Hong Kong companies such as Universe Films Distribution, Filmart is the time to meet those key Southeast Asian buyers. This year, Universe’s senior distribution manager Alice Leung hopes to use Filmart to pre-sell the company’s new $30m action title to key territories such as Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and, hopefully, India. “Indian buyers are quite picky and looking for big action titles with a big cast,” says Leung. The untitled project, to be directed by Benny Chan, is being made as an official Hong Kong-China co-production. Although Hong Kong companies can easily visit their counterparts in Beijing and Shanghai throughout the year, Leung believes Filmart plays a vital role in bringing together the two, still very distinct, markets. “Filmart is becoming more of a brand-building event for the Hong Kong studios,” she says. “Chinese companies come to introduce themselves to Hong Kong buyers and sellers and studios, to a very local market.” And significantly, Hong Kong provides an enduring allure. When asked if Filmart is a pleasant place to do business, Tow Yung Kow of Malaysian distributor Golden Screen replies simply: “Oh yes.” He is one of many who point to the appeal of this relatively safe and compact city. “Frankly speaking, it’s very easy to go,” says Nikkatsu’s Kawai. “There’s great food, glamorous premieres, fun parties and the market is well-contained and convenient at the convention centre,” points out Clover Film’s Lim Teck. “Work-wise and entertainment-wise, it’s all great in Hong Kong,” smiles s Iamphungphorn. n March 2015 Screen International 3

Dragon Blade
Triple threat How do Hong Kong film-makers retain their identity when they are trying to please three very different audiences? Liz Shackleton reports his year’s Chinese New Year holiday was another box-office bonanza in mainland China thanks to hits including historical action epic Dragon Blade, gambling caper From Vegas To Macau 2 and fantasy adventure Zhong Kui: Snow Girl And The Dark Crystal. As usual, Hong Kong talent featured prominently in many of the big hitters, even if they were not all financed by Hong Kong companies. Jackie Chan starred alongside Adrien Brody and John Cusack in Dragon Blade and Chow Yun Fat returned for sequel From Vegas To Macau 2. Both films also had Hong Kong directors, as did Zhong Kui, which was co-directed by Peter Pau. But all these films were made with the mainland market in mind. With China’s rise, the Hong Kong film industry finds itself in thrall to three distinct audiences: censorship-friendly co-productions for the mainland; edgier action films and thrillers for global export; and smaller films that cater to the tastes of Hong Kong audiences, who aren’t usually captivated by mainland fare. As if that were not complicated enough, industry dynamics at home and abroad mean none of these markets are risk-free: not all Hong KongChina co-productions work on the mainland; western buyers have become much choosier in recent years about acquiring action titles; and Hong Kong audiences need

coaxing to visit the cinema for anything other than Hollywood 3D tentpoles. The only local films in Hong Kong’s top 10 in 2014 were Chinese New Year comedies Golden Chickensss and From Vegas To Macau. And yet reports of the death of Hong Kong cinema have been exaggerated. Last year saw quirky, imaginative films such as Fruit Chan’s Midnight After and Pang Ho Cheung’s Aberdeen, along with a bold experiment in Ann Hui’s The Golden Era. There is also fresh indie talent such as Adam Wong (The Way We Dance) and Philip Yung, whose Port Of Call will close this year’s HKIFF (see interview, page 10). The real issue is sustainability, as the future of Hong Kong cinema is not assured unless new talent enters the industry and a thriving cinemagoing culture is encouraged and supported. The government is helping to a certain extent — pledging a further $25.8m (hk$200m) for the Film Development Fund and mulling plans to reserve space for cinemas, which are threatened by the city’s sky-high rents. It remains to be seen whether such plans will scrape past legislators but as the list of new productions here demonstrates, Hong Kong producers are not waiting for help; they are working hard to serve their three audiences, without losing hope that some projects will prosper s across all three. n

Hong Kong International Film Festival’s Roger Garcia tells Liz Shackleton about the efforts made to woo younger audiences
s executive director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS), Roger Garcia oversees both the festival and the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF). Along with the Busan and Tokyo film festivals, HKIFF is also a joint partner in the Asian Film Awards Academy, which organises the Asian Film Awards (AFA) and is embarking on a year-round programme of activity. HKIFF aims to showcase Chinese and Asian cinema as well as bring the best of world cinema to Hong Kong. This year the festival opens with Taiwan-born film-maker Sylvia Chang’s Murmur Of The Hearts and closes with local director Philip Yung’s Port Of Call. The line-up also includes Abderrahmane Sissako’s Oscar-nominated Timbuktu and recent Berlin winners such as Jafar Panahi’s Taxi (see sidebar). But in a city of super-fast broadband speeds, where residents are glued to their smartphones and cinemas have to battle sky-high rents, Garcia knows he can’t take cinema audiences for granted.

‘We’re showing a lot of good films and want to make the whole thing more accessible and affordable to everyone’ Roger Garcia, HKIFFS
He has made it a personal mission to contribute towards development of the territory’s cinema-going culture, not just during the two weeks of the festival but year round. In 2013, the festival launched HKIFF Cine Fan, a monthly repertory programme that has screened showcases based around themes such as Russian studio Mosfilm, actor Marlon Brando and film-makers Chris Marker and Jacques Demy. What’s new at HKIFF this year? RG I’ve been occupied by audience development and community outreach for the last few years. It’s really important because we’re working in an environment where people are not going to the cinema as much as they used to. We need to develop an audience at a young age that will form the habit of continuing to go and support that communal viewing experience. With support from Create Hong Kong, the Arts Development Council and other sponsors and partners, we are
putting on 11 free community screenings at HKIFF this year and also making an effort to have more Chinese subtitling on our films. In the past, we had only around 25% Chinese subtitling in our programme and this year we’re making an effort to push that to 50%. It’s quite a challenge but we need to have audiences discover other types of film-making from different countries and Chinese subtitling does help in that regard. We’re also offering student tickets at $3 (hk$25) across the board, except for films that are classified out of their age range. We’re showing a lot of good films and want to make the whole thing more accessible and affordable to everyone. What has the reception been to Cine Fan since you launched it two years ago? RG It’s exceeded our original targets. We were hoping for an admissions rate of 45% to 50%, which is reasonable for a rep programme showing 18 to 30 films a month. But we’ve been reaching an admissions rate of 65% to 70%. Some of www.screendaily.com
the better-known films such as Apocalypse Now and 2001: A Space Odyssey have been extremely popular — we sold out four houses for 2001. These films are available on DVD so this demonstrates to me that people do like to see movies in theatres. How do you feel about the state of Hong Kong cinema? Is it being eclipsed by the rise of the mainland film industry? RG It’s a bit of an unpredictable future but it’s important for us to maintain an industry in Hong Kong and encourage young people to enter that industry. Our films still have the ability to travel overseas and we have versatile film-makers like the Pang Brothers who have made films in Hollywood, Thailand, China and Hong Kong. Our film-makers also win awards overseas. We also have Pang Ho Cheung and Dante Lam who are making films in mainland China but that doesn’t mean they won’t make films in Hong Kong as well. What we need to do is tell young people that Hong Kong cinema is not dead and there are opportunities here to cut your teeth on a first feature and make films that relate to Hong Kong people. If they think Hong Kong cinema has no future, that’s a real disincentive to go off and make films. We need to correct the picture. It’s not as bad as some people make out. Are there specific measures that need to be taken to support Hong Kong cinema? RG I’d like to see more independent filmmakers. Film industries really start to move forward when you have activity in both commercial and non-commercial film-making. The indies are like an R&D unit that feeds young, imaginative filmmakers into the mainstream. Johnnie To has been helping to do that through the Fresh Wave initiative and we do have some forms of funding through the Film Development Fund. But you can’t artificially force these things, they need to find their own momentum. And maybe we need to rethink Hong Kong’s role in cinema anyway. We are an [international] financial and trading centre and should really try to develop more as a centre of film financing and packaging. People could come here with projects and try to get them financed without coming under all the constraints of shooting in China. If we had a successful film fund in Hong www.screendaily.com
‘The indies are like an R&D unit that feeds young imaginative filmmakers into the mainstream’ Roger Garcia, HKIFFS
Kong, then that would be another vehicle for investment from China and other parts of Asia. How are the Asian Film Awards evolving since the AFA Academy was established last year? RG We are gradually developing the structure, image and brand of the Asian Film Awards and that’s been helped by setting up the Academy. We’re also developing the Academy’s year-round activities and have received some local funding for that as the secretariat is based in Hong Kong. We’re also developing a programme where we can send young professionals overseas for exposure and networking.
The idea is that we send them to other places in Asia or Europe or the US so they can understand how things like music recording or production design are done in other countries. We’re also looking at putting together a package of half-a-dozen films from the AFA that we can send to different places around the region. There are many places where people may not have the opportunity to see films from the Philippines or Japan. Or they’ve seen Hong Kong kung-fu movies but not the romcoms. Again it’s an audience development exercise. There are emerging economies like Myanmar and Cambodia that haven’t had the opportunity to s see a broad range of films. ■
FILMS AT HKIFF 2015
My City
The Taking Of Tiger Mountain In addition to Philip Yung’s Port Of Call, which closes this year’s HKIFF, the festival features the world premieres of Hong Kong films including Lau Ho Leung’s Two Thumbs Up, starring Francis Ng, and Fruit Chan’s documentary My City, about well-known local writer Xi Xi. The festival is also screening a retrospective of films from this year’s Filmmaker In Focus, Taiwan-born actress and director Sylvia Chang, including That Day, On The Beach (1983), Queen Of Temple Street (1990), Tempting Heart (1999) and her most recent work Murmur Of The Hearts (2015), which opens the festival. HKIFF has also collaborated again with Youku on omnibus film Beautiful 2015, which this year includes short films from Iran’s Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Taiwan’s Tsai Ming Liang, China’s Huang Jianxin and Hong Kong’s Yim Ho. In addition to Jafar Panahi’s Golden Bear winner Taxi, the line-up also includes several other Berlin winners
Ixcanul such as Jayro Bustamante’s Ixcanul (Ixcanul Volcano), Radu Jude’s Aferim!, Malgorzata Szumowska’s Body, Sebastian Schipper’s Victoria and Alexey German Jr’s Under Electric Clouds. Several Oscar-nominated films will also play at the festival, including Wim Wenders’ documentary The Salt Of The Earth, Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu and Tomm Moore’s Song Of The Sea (pictured below). The festival also features a sidebar of German cinema; a retrospective of Japanese director Mikio Naruse, marking the 110th anniversary of his birth; and a series of masterclasses with Makhmalbaf, the UK’s Peter Greenaway and Portugal’s Pedro Costa. Makhmalbaf will also serve as jury head for the Young Cinema Competition. Tsui Hark’s 3D action adventure The Taking Of Tiger Mountain, which recently grossed more than $140m in China, will be screened at the awards gala night.

INTERVIEW PHILIP YUNG
The art of discovery Philip Yung talks to Silvia Wong about socially conscious storytelling and his HKIFF closing film Port Of Call
fter winning the HAF award for a Hong Kong project in 2011, Hong Kong writer-director Philip Yung’s Port Of Call suffered a false start. An investor had committed to the production but pulled out at the 11th hour due to creative differences. Fast-forward to April 2015 and Port Of Call is the closing film of the 39th Hong Kong International Film Festival. Based on the real case of a 16-year-old mainland call girl who was murdered and dismembered by a truck driver client in Hong Kong, Yung says he has made the film he wanted to make. “It was a sensational front-page story when the news broke in 2008,” Yung says. “The local press didn’t spare any graphic details of the murder. What interested me wasn’t the blood and gore but the motivations behind the crime. He killed her; was it simply because she told him she wanted to die? But why would such a young girl want to die?” In the film, Yung uses the detective played by Aaron Kwok to represent his own perspective. “Aaron’s character is not portrayed as a hard-boiled detective hero but an ordinary police officer who becomes obsessed with the backstory of the dead girl and her killer,” Yung explains. “His investigation is about what made them who they were and made the society what it was.” Yung is inspired by Hong Kong directors Fruit Chan and Ann Hui for their ability to tell socially conscious stories in artistic, original ways.

Like his previous two films, which were both about teenagers, Port Of Call looks at how the young generation feels confused by and lost within society. Yung’s debut feature, Glamorous Youth, was well received at festivals and won a Film of Merit prize at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards in 2009. His second feature, May We Chat, was a reboot of 1982 classic Lonely Fifteen about teen prostitution.
‘Art films have been marginalised in Hong Kong, except for some documentaries’ Philip Yung, director
Crushed creativity Although Yung is one of the few independent directors from Hong Kong in recent years who has the opportunity to cross over to the mainstream, he says it is crucial for him to keep his creativity alive and intact. He wants to think beyond what the audience wants and what suits the market in mainland China. “‘Art films have been marginalised in Hong Kong, except for some documentaries,” says Yung, a former film critic for local publications City Entertainment, Wen Wei Po and AM730.. “We can still see fresh ideas in student short films but creativity is crushed in the commercial mainstream.” With a $3m budget, Port Of Call is Yung’s biggest film to date. It is fully financed by Mei Ah Entertainment as a local production — not as a Hong KongChina co-production, which has become the norm. The Hong Kongbased Mei Ah is also handling international sales and will release the film in Hong Kong.
(Below) Philip Yung’s Port Of Call will close HKIFF
Yung was well supported by a strong team, including DoP Christopher Doyle, editing adviser Liao Ching Song and Tu Du Chih for audio post-production. Doyle is one of three members of the original team that has been involved in the project since 2011, along with Kwok and actress Elaine Jin. Next up for Yung is The Sea, a HAF 2014 project based on a real-life massacre on board a Chinese fishing boat. With production scheduled to start in the second half of this year, Yung is fully aware of the challenges ahead. In addition to filming in the confined space of a ship, there will be water scenes and an ensemble cast of more than two dozen actors. He will team up again with Port Of Call producer Julia Chu with whom he has a director’s contract through her company Golden Gate Productions. Chu is a renowned local producer, whose credits include the regional boxoffice hit As The Light Goes Out (which Yung co-wrote), Lau Ho Leung’s directorial debut Two Thumbs Up, which will have its world premiere at HKIFF, and Jeff L a u’s u p c o m i n g s comedy Kick Ball. ■

US stands at Filmart 2014
US falls for Filmart appeal Filmart offers US sellers the chance to establish and maintain relationships with Asian buyers outside the frenzy of the bigger markets in the calendar. Jeremy Kay reports ne of the more commonly heard refrains from international sales companies at Berlin’s European Film Market in February was how few Asian distributors were walking the halls of the Martin-GropiusBau and nearby hotels. This is nothing new — Berlin’s chilly embrace and proximity to the Chinese New Year holiday has seldom drawn hordes of buyers from China, Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia. Yet such is the allure of Asia, and in particular the promise of China as a potentially game-changing commercial prospect, that US sellers were concerned by the absence of many of the region’s buyers. The arrival of Filmart just five weeks after the conclusion of business in Germany offers a chance to redress the balance and a healthy delegation of US sales companies will make the trip to Hong

Kong, as they have done for many years. US sellers have long seen value in Filmart, which offers a change of pace from Berlin and a more focused environment in which to forge or consolidate relationships with the Asian industry. “Filmart is a great opportunity for our Beijing-based sales executives to get in front of Asian buyers, many of whom don’t attend Berlin a few weeks earlier,” says Stuart Ford, whose IM Global opened a Beijing office in 2013. “We use the IFTA [Independent Film & Television Alliance] pavilion — it’s well organised and the spirit of Filmart doesn’t require elaborate office set-ups.” The “spirit” Ford refers to is the common practice among attendees of sending small teams of representatives, which means Filmart is largely a pavilion-based event. This is the fifth year IFTA has operated an umbrella stand, although for the

first time it will not be dedicated solely to US companies and is open to the organisation’s global membership. “Most companies who are not based in Asia find they only need to send one person, maybe two,” says IFTA executive vice-president and AFM managing director Jonathan Wolf. “If you are only sending one person you don’t need more than the space we provide.” Wolf first visited Filmart eight years ago and recalls being impressed by what he saw. “All in one place, easy to move around and well organised,” he says. “You didn’t have to be there for more than three days to get business done — and it was easy to travel to.” Discussions with membership made it clear to Wolf and IFTA president and CEO Jean Prewitt it was time to establish an on-site presence. Wolf had heard about a programme run by the US Department of Commerce and secured www.screendaily.com
a partial underwrite from the government for IFTA’s first American Pavilion. “Non-US members were right next door to us and could take advantage,” says Wolf. “That deal sunset last year and now we’ll attend with the IFTA pavilion [for members of all nationalities].” Some US companies inevitably opt out of the pavilion’s suite of administrative services, preferring to attend under their own steam, while non-participating IFTA members of other nationalities who operate their own stand include the Hong Kong contingent. IFTA says there will be 50-55 IFTA members exhibiting in Hong Kong, of which roughly half will be on the IFTA pavilion. For IM Global, which has benefited from the pavilion for several years, Filmart presents an opportunity among other things to sell premium Chineselanguage content via its Anthem label. “Filmart is an important trading post for that content,” says Ford. “I personally attend Filmart too because it’s a good chance to put in face time with senior figures from the Chinese industry.” IM Global is hoping to tempt buyers with The Ghouls, which is financed by Wanda and Enlight, and close Asian deals on its slate of US titles including Mel Gibson’s upcoming Second World War drama Hacksaw Ridge, which is set to star Andrew Garfield. Filmart is not the place where US sellers tend to launch sales and, Prewitt notes, neither is it a forum for screenings. This gives rise to a specific profile
‘Filmart is a great followup market because there are noticeably fewer Asian buyers in Berlin’ Katie Irwin, Fortitude International
to the type of business activity that happens in Hong Kong. “Filmart is a great follow-up market because there are noticeably fewer Asian buyers in Berlin than there are at Cannes or AFM or Toronto,” says Katie Irwin, Fortitude International’s Los Angeles-based vice-president of international and a fluent Mandarin speaker. She points out a Hong Kong trip offers several strategic benefits not found at larger markets on the circuit. “There’s more access to Asian buyers because there are fewer US companies attending Filmart, although that’s changing,” Irwin acknowledges. “It’s been a good place to get in front of people, get to know each other, find out how they do business and get to know other Asian companies they work with.”
Unique access As business with the leading Asian theatrical buyers can take place at Cannes and AFM, this creates a worthwhile entry point to other types of buyers. “There are several distributors,” says
Irwin, “who started out as sub-distributors for the major buyers and would not [initially] buy off us directly. They know the TV and home-video space and are looking to get into the theatrical or allrights side of things very early. “They have been around for ages and none of us know them and they use Filmart to acquire content directly. This has been happening for the last several years and [now] they’re getting more access to us. They’re getting into the market more directly.” For those buyers at Filmart who do not specialise in theatrical releasing and show no interest in broadening their skillset, Hong Kong can be useful for a certain type of deal. “It’s good for companies selling libraries,” says one US executive. “There are a handful of all-rights distributors in Thailand who might be good to sell to.” For Sam Eigen, executive vice-president of Shoreline Entertainment, the market is ripe with possibility and enables access to virtually every Asian territory. “China, of course, and a good sampling from all other Asian markets,” Eigen explains. “We have mostly done TV and/or VoD deals as the theatrical distributors from the region generally attend other markets such as Berlin and Cannes.” Filmart’s key strength, believes IFTA’s Wolf, is as a place to make new contacts. “It’s hard to do a productive sales trip in Asia. Filmart offers a somewhat unique opportunity to connect to these emerging markets and people are making use s of that opportunity.” ■

Expo’s top 10 Entertainment Expo Hong Kong (March 23-April 19) returns with its 10 signature events related to global film, TV, music and digital entertainment
E
ntertainment Expo has grown from its three founding events — Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART), Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) and Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) — to include six more core events: Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), Hong Kong Asian-Pop Music Festival (HKAMF), IFPI Hong Kong Top Sales Music Award, ifva (Incubator For Film & Visual Media In Asia Festival), the Asian VFX and Digital Cinema Summit and the Digital Entertainment Summit, as well as the affiliated TV World International Forum. The ninth edition of TV World will include TV screenings, discussions and networking events. TV World’s International Forum will have the theme of ‘The Rise of TV Streaming’, with industry experts sharing insights
about how to leverage spin-off opportunities and rise to future challenges. TV World’s 300 exhibitors include TVB, CCTV from mainland China, Public Television from Taiwan, Tokyo Broadcasting System Television (TBS) from Japan and Fairchild Television from Canada, among others. To further engage the public, the Expo plans special promotions — under the banner ‘Enjoy Great Movies, Enjoy Special Offers’ — with cinemas, retailers, bars and restaurants. Leon Lai (pictured) returns as ambassador for the Expo, and shot a new photo campaign for HKTDC with Cheung Man-wah to promote the event. Lai also directed the Expo video (with Cheung as cinematographer) that was screened across more than 40 Hong Kong cinemas before the Expo.

Digital entertainment companies will have a larger presence, representing the boom in the digital side of the film and TV worlds. About 150 digital companies will come to FILMART — that includes 40 Hong Kong companies joining under the Animation and Digital Entertainment Pavilion funded by CreateHK. Other reflections of the changing digital face of the industry include the March 26 presentation of the fifth Hong Kong International Mobile Film Awards, which continues to be held at FILMART to recognise outstanding films made for mobile phones. FILMART also continues to host the popular Locations World, promoting location shooting and related services across the globe. About 10
exhibitors will be present, including Cambodia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and more.
Conference themes The thematic conferences at FILMART will be: ‘Find Your Opportunities in the Media Convergence Age’ (March 23, chaired by Screen International Asia editor Liz Shackleton and featuring Power To The Pixel’s Liz Rosenthal and Gravitas Ventures’ Michael Murphy); ‘TV World 2015 International Forum: The Rise of TV Streaming — Opportunities and Challenges’ on March 24, featuring Peter Lam of the Hong Kong Televisioners Association, Jonathan Ding of the Multiscreen Internet Access Standard Group, and Kim Jin-kwon of KBS-Media; and, on March 25, the
