Celluloid Dreams woos Ladies’ Man BY MELANIE GOODFELLOW
Celluloid Dreams has acquired world sales rights on Matt Bissonnette’s Death Of A Ladies’ Man, starring Irish actor Gabriel Byrne as a hard-drinking poetry professor who unexpectedly finds love when he retreats to a shack in Ireland after discovering he has a brain tumour. Bissonnette, whose credits include 2009’s Passenger Side, will direct from his own script. The film is a Canadian-Irish co -production produced by Bissonnette’s long-time collaborator Corey Marr, Canadian producer Marie-Claude Poulin and Ireland’s Martina Niland. The film’s title is taken from Leonard Cohen’s 1977 album, and the script was inspired by the work of the late Canadian musician. Cohen’s music and verse will be woven throughout the film “The script literally sings with its significant messages about the ephemeral but vital nature of life,” said Celluloid Dreams president Hengameh Panahi.

Reviews edited by Fionnuala Halligan finn.halligan@screendaily.com
The Happy Prince Reviewed by Fionnuala Halligan Rupert Everett summons the ghost of the ruined and ruinous Oscar Wilde for his directorial debut, while also starring as the Irish poet, playwright and wit at the end of his tragically short life. Wilde’s struggle with himself, his heavenly talent and earthly lusts, and the meaning of it all, resonates so strongly with the direction and performance that The Happy Prince is elevated past period Victoriana to move and engage in equal parts. Wilde’s heartbreaking children’s story The Happy Prince weaves in and out of the narrative, and actorly indulgences — particularly towards the climax — should be forgiven. After all, Wilde himself would be the last to ruin a deathbed scene by cutting it short. Commercially The Happy Prince will have to carve out its own niche in the small but prestigious area between Death In Venice, Call Me By Your Name and Shadowlands. Everett’s performance marks a career best, though he is subsumed enough to be almost unrecognisable. It is his own tender screenplay, however, and a burnished combination of empathy and realism that makes the film — with its all-Europe settings and lustrous lighting and design — a strongly cinematic statement from an actor whose intelligence, up to now, has always outshone the films in which he has appeared. Everett starred as Wilde in the 2012 revival of the play The Judas Kiss, and the pair are an

immaculate fit. His clear sympathy for and identification with Wilde seems to come on many levels. Although they play small roles in comparison, Everett has guided his cast to shine. His Another Country co-star Colin Firth as Wilde’s friend Reggie Turner, Colin Morgan as Lord Alfred ‘Bosie’ Douglas, Emily Watson as Wilde’s wife Constance and Edwin Thomas as his stalwart friend and erstwhile lover Robbie Ross all deliver strong, grounded performances. This is a new treatment of Wilde — no Stephen Fry-style floppy-haired hagiography with Oscar dropping lilies as he mooches towards death. Here, ravaged and dissolute, Wilde tumbles headlong into his downfall, dying destitute in Saint-Germain-des-Prés at the age of 46. The Happy Prince sees Wilde alone and drunk in Paris, cadging money from former friends, almost willing himself to death. His soul is irreparably damaged after two years of hard labour in Reading Gaol for gross indecency and he wants to see his children, yet reunites with Bosie knowing what that will mean. “I am my own Judas,” he says. Everett, for whom this is a long-held passion project carefully patched together through an elaborate network of European finance out of Germany (with assistance from the BBC and Lionsgate in the UK), carefully modulates his performance. Parts tragic, defiant and gleefully self-indulgent, Everett coarsens his features with prosthetics to catalogue the final
years of a wandering, impecunious, drunk and nihilistic Wilde. Everett does not dial down Wilde’s darker side. It is a tough look at the sexual appetites (his “mauve moments” with street boys) and heavy drinking and druggy ways of a voracious man who was dangerous to those who came close. (“Each man kills the things he loves” — or, as his first lover and final love Ross warns, “He’ll eat you.”) With a running theme of ‘The Boy I Love Is Up In The Gallery’ (a performance Everett relishes), The Happy Prince switches moods at the tip of Wilde’s hat. The score is by Gabriel Yared, while Everett holds a writing credit on the rambunctious ‘Vive Le Trottoir’. The velour wallpaper, drapes and dark Victorian interiors may battle with Everett and Wilde, but they never win. The European light, the efforts Wilde makes with rouge and panstick, and a sequence on a beach, seem to deliberately call to mind Thomas Mann and Visconti, but The Happy Prince has further to travel in its examination of the artist and the choices he made. Quoting De Profundis — Wilde’s testament from prison — Everett tracks the end of the man who was greedy for “the fruit of all the trees in all the world”, and was viciously punished for it. The posthumous pardon for Wilde’s prison sentence, as the credits note, was only delivered last year, giving The Happy Prince an immediate point of relevance, and a poignant one at that.

Damsel Reviewed by Tim Grierson An amusing doodle of a revisionist Western that slowly accrues unexpected resonance, Damsel finds filmmakers David and Nathan Zellner hitting upon a better balance between the jokey and the poetic than their previous feature, 2014’s Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter. Throwing darts at genre conventions while honouring what is eternally mythic about the milieu, this comedy-drama draws off-kilter performances from Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska that reframe archetypes and consistently set us back on our heels. Premiering at Sundance, Damsel looks to be a more commercial offering than the Zellners’ earlier films, thanks largely to Pattinson and Wasikowska. While the Western trappings may help with accessibility, unsuspecting audiences may be baffled by this oddball film that’s neither parody nor homage. Pattinson stars as Samuel, a well-to-do young man travelling on horseback to reunite with his lover Penelope (Wasikowska), aided by a drunkard (David Zellner) who claims to be a minister who can marry them. But as Samuel nears his destination, new information complicates his romantic rendezvous.

Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter was a quixotic road movie in which the Zellners self-consciously applied a deadpan sense of humour. Here, Damsel has its own share of peculiarities, including a twisty narrative. But let it be said that the writing-directing brothers refuse to let any genre tropes be taken for granted, constantly upending our expectations about who these characters are and what they’re capable of. Initially, the film seems to be little more than a riff on the Western’s high, lonesome solemnity, with cinematographer Adam Stone shooting the Utah locations in beautiful widescreen to emphasise the grandeur of this untamed countryside. This visual majesty is impishly undercut by the characters’ foolish behaviour and the strange problems they encounter that are not known to occur in other Westerns. Guns misfire, no one can tie a proper knot, horses come in different sizes, and supporting characters end up being crucial to the narrative. In recent years, Pattinson has enthusiastically worked with auteurs and independent filmmakers in order to push himself creatively. His performance in Damsel isn’t as striking as in Good Time or Cosmopolis, but he clearly enjoys himself playing a gallant pioneer who may not have the mettle required to thrive in
the Old West. Pattinson is smart playing a not-so-smart guy, never letting his portrayal become flat. But Damsel’s real standout is Wasikowska, who’s steeliness as Penelope becomes one of the film’s driving forces. Her rapport with Pattinson is appealing, but what is especially fun is how both add a contemporary spin to their knowingly clichéd roles. The filmmakers’ long-time musical collaborators The Octopus Project have fashioned a minimalist yet haunting score. Produced on period-specific instruments such as banjos and musical saws — which were then doctored with studio effects — the aural landscape proves to be as quietly disorienting as the film’s increasingly strange and occasionally goofy odyssey. Along the way, the Zellner brothers make cheeky observations about racism, destiny and gender inequality that are so offhand they feel almost subliminal, woven into the fabric of their quirky little concoction. It’s only at the end that Damsel’s casual spell fully takes hold, leaving us as unmoored as the characters.

Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot Reviewed by Tim Grierson Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot pays tribute to John Callahan, a cartoonist, alcoholic and quadriplegic who died in 2010 at the age of 59. What’s most touching about this intimate film is the modesty with which it honours its subject. Resisting the urge to bathe Callahan’s life in superlatives, director-screenwriter Gus Van Sant focuses on the humanness of his struggles, resulting in a film that radiates compassion and sensitively, and addresses addiction, recovery and forgiveness. Joaquin Phoenix’s raw performance as Callahan never strives for greatness, which only makes it all the more affecting. Having premiered at Sundance and set for a May 11 release in the US, Don’t Worry will attract discerning viewers in speciality markets. Powered by a cast that includes Phoenix, Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara and Jack Black, this Amazon Studios production should enjoy sizable visibility, even if general audiences won’t be that familiar with Callahan. Spanning more than a decade, the film fashions a mosaic-like portrait of Callahan who, in the early 1970s, was paralysed from the chest down in a car crash. A shiftless young man mostly interested in his next drink, Callahan is emotionally shattered by the accident, battling both his addiction and his radical new circum-

stances. The mental side of his recovery is overseen by his Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor Donnie (Hill), who works to free Callahan of the pain that led him to drinking in the first place. Based on Callahan’s memoir, Don’t Worry has seemingly predictable contours for a biopic, celebrating a flawed man who overcame extreme obstacles to find his artistic voice. While Van Sant spends a little time dramatising how Callahan developed his sardonic side to become a cartoonist post-accident, the film fights to avoid genre conventions, and instead pinpoints the particulars of this man’s road to sobriety. As a result, some patience is required to get comfortable with Van Sant’s technique. Crucial moments occur out of order or off screen entirely, and the narrative sometimes digresses, devoting little time to Callahan’s love affair with Swedish therapist Annu (Mara), as well as his search for his birth mother. The audience receives pieces of the man’s experiences, but Van Sant doesn’t worry about drawing all these disparate threads together. Yet the cumulative effect has its own kind of sneaky power, presenting us with snapshots of a life rather than assuming that a straight forward narrative arc would be more illuminating. As an added bonus, Don’t Worry proves to be a richer ensemble piece than the typical biopic, especially as it develops the friendship between Callahan and Donnie, and creates a crucial
character in the form of the drunk driver (Black) who altered Callahan’s destiny. Phoenix’s skill at portraying oddballs and outcasts is well served in Don’t Worry. Callahan is a joker laid low by crippling alcoholism, and the Oscar-nominated actor gives his character’s addiction a queasy desperation with a mixture of dark humour and pathos that has a welcome lack of pretence. Working with cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt and composer Danny Elfman, Van Sant uses restraint to highlight the difficult, incremental work his protagonist must endure to regain control over his life. There are no grand monologues or big moments, and the excessive sentimentality that can detract from his other films (The Sea Of Trees being an especially irksome recent example) is largely absent. Performances are unfussy and in-themoment. Hill is especially good as Donnie, while Black perhaps overdoes his character’s party-boy behaviour early on. As for Mara, she’s little more than a cipher. A more conventional film would have devoted much of its running time to Callahan and Annu’s romance, but in Don’t Worry it’s only one piece in the puzzle — an afterthought that demonstrates the limitations of Van Sant’s narrative strategy.

SPOTLIGHT IDRIS ELBA
Elba calls the shots Idris Elba makes his directorial debut with Yardie, a crime drama set in 1970s Jamaica and 1980s London. Andreas Wiseman spoke to the first-time director about the latest addition to his repertoire
I
dris Elba’s directorial debut Yardie is an adaptation of Jamaican-born British writer Victor Headley’s 1992 crime novel. It follows a courier who carries cocaine from Jamaica to London before deciding to go it alone and disappearing into the mean streets of Hackney with a kilo of white powder. The thriller has a cult reputation in the UK, where it proved a publishing hit. Clearly inspired by 1980 cult drama Babylon (screenwriter Martin Stellman worked on both), the film is a suspenseful cat-and-mouse gangster thriller with impressive acting and great music. Yardie’s journey to screen began many years before Elba cast his lead actor Aml Ameen during a 2015 flight from London to Los Angeles. Novelist Headley had already been trying to get a film adaptation off the ground, but the project gained momentum when UK production outfit Warp Films optioned the novel in 2010 and secured backing from Studiocanal. Bronson writer Brock Norman Brock joined soon after, before Elba followed. “I read the book as a teenager,” The Wire star recalls. “It moved me at the time. “There were many touchstones,” Elba expands. “I’ve been vocal about how much Hackney and that part of east London influenced me as a young man, so making a film about someone I can relate to made it easier for me. I could put a lot of myself into it. I could almost imagine the audience who might respond to the film.” Elba’s film, much of which is acted in a lyrical Jamaican patois, has a strong musical element, with reggae and dancehall feeding the narrative. While in London, the film’s main character D (Ameen) hooks up with a soundclash crew. Elba himself has been a DJ from a young age, known on the decks as DJ Big Driis or Big Driis the Londoner. “The film’s DJing component felt autobiographical to me,” Elba confirms. “The fascination for sound systems and how sometimes being immersed in sound is like following a football team — you wear your colours with pride — that’s something I can relate to.” While casting Ameen turned out to be a relative cinch, finding the film’s female lead proved more challenging.
“Directing has made me realise that I need to be a much nicer person as an actor. It’s very hard on set when actors are difficult.” Elba has been an outspoken critic of the UK film and TV sector’s lack of diversity. Yardie touches on London’s strained race relations in the 1980s, but Elba intentionally held back from making his first film a polemic about race. “I didn’t want to make a film about race and I didn’t want to make a film that was overly politicised,” he acknowledges. “It was important for me not to send too many messages. Although this story is encased in Jamaican culture, my goal was to make this feel like a universal and relatable story.”

‘Directing has made me realise I need to be a much nicer person as an actor’ Idris Elba
Yvonne played by Shantol Jackson
Elba initially tried to cast the role out of the UK, but no one was quite right. So he flew to Kingston to find his Yvonne. One of the first actresses he met was Shantol Jackson, who had sent Elba audition tapes. “Shantol was the second or third actress I saw in Jamaica,” Elba recalls. “She won the job in the room. She was amazing.” What would his actors say was his main strength as a director?
18 Screen International at Berlin February 15, 2018
“Probably that I could communicate my ideas articulately and that I welcomed ideas,” he guesses. “I’m highly self-critical, but when someone criticises me or steers me, I can deal with that. I’m pragmatic, I’m a communicator. You could ask me a question and I don’t mind taking 20 minutes to sit down and discuss it.
Riaze Foster (left) and Aml Ameen in Yardie
That said, Elba is also aware how refreshing it is to see a commercially oriented UK film from a black director with a largely black cast being backed by industry pillars such as the BFI, BBC Films and Studiocanal. That combination remains a rarity. “I want there to be more waves in British cinema and more waves in Afro-Caribbean cinema,” he says. Following his experience on Yardie, does Elba have the directing bug? “Definitely,” he says. “I want to do a musical next. I’d like to do a musical with modern music. No orchestra. An ‘all-singing, alldancing’ musical but with dance and electronic music. I’m going to try to provide some of the soundtrack for it, though there’ll be enough talent on the soundtrack already. I’d also act in it. “The idea is complicated. I’ve given myself a development period of around a year and then I’ll be ready. I’ve got a development fund I’m working with but no other s financiers yet.” ■

n 2017, Chinese cinema appeared to recover from the malaise of the previous year when the country’s stagnating box-office growth was partly attributed to a weak line-up of local productions. Following the game-changing success of Wolf Warrior 2’s $873m haul over the summer, the hits just kept on coming right until the end of the year. Released in September, Mahua Funage’s bodyswap comedy Never Say Die grossed $350m, while Feng Xiaogang scored his biggest ever hit with coming-of-age drama Youth, co-produced by Feng’s Dongyang Mayla Media and Huayi Brothers, which has grossed $236m since its mid-December release. The success of these films helped the China box office to return to growth last year, following a flat 2016. In local currency terms, the box office increased by 22% to hit $8.6bn ( RMB 55.9bn), an increase of $2bn over the previous year. Chinese productions grossed a combined $4.6bn (RMB30.1bn), accounting for a 54% market share. And the hits have continued into 2018. Huayi Brothers enjoyed another major success with romantic comedy sequel The Ex-Files 3: The Return Of The Exes,
which grossed $320m in January, while Forever Young, a star-laden drama produced to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Beijing’s Tsinghua University, took $111m later that month. While December usually sees a string of big releases, January is considered a quieter month, so the recent hits were unexpected, especially as they’ve come several weeks before China’s biggest boxoffice period, the Chinese New Year holiday, gets underway from February 15-21. High-profile sequels As the Berlinale kicks off, four bigbudget live-action films, all of them sequels, will be opening at the China box office: Edko Films’ fantasy adventure Monster Hunt 2, which is also receiving a Special Gala premiere in the festival; Wanda’s action comedy Detective Chinatown 2; Bona Film Group’s militarythemed action drama Operation Red Sea; and The Monkey King 3, the latest instalment in Filmko’s hit franchise based on Chinese classic Journey To The West. Animated feature Boonie Bears: The Big Shrink, also part of a successful film series, is likewise joining the fray. While the jury is out on which film will win the biggest audience share over »

HOT PROJECTS HONG KONG & CHINA
Continued from previous page
the family-oriented holiday, two major trends have emerged at the China box office over the past year — the popularity of overtly patriotic films, evident since Wolf Warrior 2 stirred national sentiments, and the expanding youth audience in third- and fourth-tier cities. Powered by the disposable income of the ‘xiao zhen qing nian’ (small-town youngsters), The Ex-Files 3 held down Star Wars: The Last Jedi on its opening weekend, perhaps not such a surprising feat, considering most of this audience wasn’t born in the late 1990s when The Phantom Menace was released. Meanwhile, films such as Youth and Forever Young tap into slightly older audiences with nostalgia-drenched stories, which have particular relevance in a country where society is changing at such a rapid pace. While not a new trend — it can be traced back to Vicky Zhao Wei’s college-set drama So Young in 2013 — it seems to be an enduring one. History lessons However, peering further back into the past with big-budget historical dramas, once the bedrock of Chinese cinema, does not seem to be working so well. Chen Kaige’s China-Japan co-production Legend Of The Demon Cat is a visual feast, but with a December gross of around $88m is not considered a major success. Much is now riding on the film’s Japanese release in February. China’s current preoccupation with patriotism, nostalgia and slapstick romantic comedy may not motivate international audiences, but there has also been a surge in the breadth and quality of arthouse filmmaking over the past year. Films such as Vivian Wu’s Angels Wear White, Zhou Ziyang’s Old Beast, Dong Yue’s The Looming Storm and Liu Jian’s Have A Nice Day, which premiered at Berlin last year, have encouragingly all recently managed to secure a Chinese theatrical release. The new wave is also in evidence at the Berlinale and European Film Market (EFM) with films such as Yang Mingming’s debut feature Girls Always Happy, which premieres in Panorama, and Cathy Yan’s recent Sundance winner Dead Pigs, which is being sold by Media Asia at the EFM. Also noteworthy are two titles from start-up Beijing-based sales company Rediance: Cai Chengjie’s The Widowed Witch, which won the Hivos Tiger Award in Rotterdam, and Berlin Forum entry An Elephant Sitting Still, from 29-year-old director and novelist Hu Bo who tragically took his own life in October 2017 after completing the film.

Another major Chinese New Year release, this action drama is loosely based on the Chinese Navy’s evacuation of Chinese citizens from Yemen’s southern port of Aden during the civil war in 2015. Despite being postponed from its original China release date, this period drama went on to become Feng’s biggest ever hit, grossing $236m since its release in mid-December. Written by Yan Geling, the film revolves around a group of young people in a military dance troupe during the turbulent 1970s and 1980s, an era of drastic change in China.
