The Civic Center and the Pet Shelter divide the site into two open spaces, one is larger, more public, and is primarily for civic center’s user. The other one is more enclosed, private, and is primarily for pet shelter user. These spaces, (or rather the users who occupy these spaces and their circulation paths) serve as the connection between the two contrasting programs. The diagonal bar that physically divides the two open space contains the main vertical circulation, the lounge, and the library. On the other side of the courtyard is a cafe. These programs were intended to attract users from two courtyards and activate the circulation from one to the other. The skin is a system of mesh that wraps around the civic center. The system control sun and view from and to the civic center, as well as allow for ventilation. It undulates vertically and horizontally, more traumatically at the entrance area and died out at the two ends. The skin gives the building two identities during the day and night. During the days, it appears solid, and civic. At night the building becomes a lantern, activate the big open space in the front, and attract users. Louver is used on the south facing facade for sun shading

|PROJECT NARRATIVE|

The site is located at the intersection of Venice Way, S Venice Boulevard and N Venice Boulevard. Different from Santa Monica area, Venice has a fairly complicated system of urban grid. The site is located where these grids meet each other, and thus created a very interesting urban condition. Located as such central location the civic building has the potential to reach out and connect to the different neighborhoods around the site. It is to become a place for the community to gather, meet people, have fun, and relax. The building would generally be open and bright, welcoming all kinds of people who visit the center. The additional program would be a Pet Shelter. Venice is a pet friendly area. There are also a few animal care organizations in the area, however no pet shelter, where one could go to get a new pet, or just to be with the animals. My concept is to utilize the exterior public space of the civic center as an animal park, where people from the neighborhood could bring their pets over, or volunteer to walk the pets from the center. Pet could be the ice breaker, the bridges between people.
