Spring 2018 Edition

President’s Message By Section President David Abarr Greetings MBCA-PDX Members, Spring is here and I hope you are all enjoying the little glimpses of sun we have had this year. I have had my SLK out a few times recently. I am in the process of doing some refurb on it. I had the wheels refinished at Wheelkraft NW located in Vancouver and the results are amazing. These r170 wheels are machined with a clear coat finish and they did a great job. New Center caps and some Conti Extreme Contact Sport tires and the transformation is incredible. I took it out this past weekend and I am very happy. More cosmetic refurbishment planned this spring is a dent removal and some repainting to do. Sending the original radio away to Beckers in NJ as well to install Bluetooth and a aux adapter.

We have some exciting events planned this spring and summer. Germanpalooza at PIR looks to be a great first year for this all German event. This is a not to be missed event on August 4th 9am-3pm. Including car show, drags, track and swap meet. The fees are very reasonable. Still in the planning stages I will make sure the info gets out there as it becomes available.

The Shape of Speed By David Abarr, Portland Section

1936 Stout Scarab Sedan The Portland Art Museum is pleased to announce The Shape of Speed: Streamlined Automobiles and Motorcycles, 1930–1942, a special exhibition debuting at the Museum in Summer 2018. Featuring 18 rare streamlined automobiles and motorcycles. The concept of streamlining has fascinated people for generations. Beginning in the early 1930s and extending until the outbreak of World War II, automotive designers embraced the challenge of styling and building truly streamlined cars that were fast and fuel-efficient. They were encouraged by the confluence of aircraft design with the sleek shapes of fast railroad locomotives; new advanced highways such as the Autobahns; and events like the 1939 New York City World’s Fair, which showcased futuristic design.

MBCA-PDX will have a docent lead tour of this significant exhibit featuring the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Stromlinienwagen on loan for the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Keep an eye out for the email in late May for the details on this great event.

Sykart Indoor Racing & Brewpub Recap

Tulip Festival Recap By David Abarr, Portland Section

By David Abarr, Portland Section

A fun way to spend a very rainy Sunday in Oregon. The competition was fierce and the member with the best record was Byron Pace. He does have the advantage of practicing with the BMW club often at this facility. Runner up was Matt Nenninger. I was alas 3rd place although I thought I was doing better than that! In all seriousness the group had a great time. A few of us went to lunch in downtown Tigard. We would like to do this event a few times a year and it really is the perfect fun indoor rainy day get together.

Portland section members were greeted by a typical Oregon spring day on March 24th as the group went to the Wooden shoe tulip Festival. We drove through the Beavercreek area and we did have a bit of snow along the way. The scenic drive through this area leading through Molalla and down Hwy 211 is very picturesque. The farm was partially in bloom albeit wet and muddy. Still very beautiful and the food was great. It is a great venue to visit now through May and I highly recommend it. A link to a video recap here

Great turn out for the January get together at Ordnance Brewing in Wilsonville. It was great catching up with members post holiday season. The food and beverage was great here for a casual get together. We got some great feedback on 2018 events and happenings.
