Should the driver fail to respond, PRE-SAFE® Brake1 engages automatic braking to minimize the risk of impact. Standard COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with Adaptive Brake Assist ensures that the correct amount of braking pressure is applied in all emergency situations. Innovation is as much a Mercedes-Benz hallmark as safety: in the GL-Class, ACTIVE PARKING ASSIST both determines suitable parking spaces, and facilitates hands-free parking. The 2014 GL-Class delivers impressive power with modern efficiency: Take the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC™, whose diesel engine – combined with the ECO Start/Stop function – delivers excellent fuel economy with minimal emissions. Or the GL 450 4MATIC™, with its mighty 4.6L Bi-turbo V8 engine which boasts 362 hp – or 429 hp on the GL 550 4MATIC™. Together with the smooth or sporty gear shifting afforded by the standard 7G-TRONIC PLUS Transmission, the GL-Class is where forward thinking meets forward moving. The GL 63 AMG sports an even more powerful hand-built AMG 5.5L biturbo V8 engine with 550 hp. High tech innovation – like direct injection, twin turbochargers, and air to water intercooling – means performance and efficiency like never before. The GL 63’s AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission features four drive modes – “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport Plus) and “M” (Manual), controlled by steering wheel mounted gearshift paddles. Self-levelling AMG sports suspension keeps the ride height constant (and smooth) at all times. Working in tandem with AIRMATIC to optimize ride quality, the Adaptive Damping System allows a choice between Comfort and Sport suspension settings at the touch of a button. (‘Sport’ firming up the suspension for sporty drivers.) Taken together, these make the GL 63 AMG a dynamic performer that delivers greater handling safety – not to mention a pure adrenalin rush.
