Parents of a mentally challenged child do not only have to go through the anxiety of finding an appropriate special school for disabled children for their kid, but they also encounter multiple issues raising the child. It must require a lot of emotional strength and flexibility on their part for sure. The parents of a child with special needs often find themselves overwhelmed by various responsibilities like healthcare and education. Whatever be the special needs of their child, minimal or complicated, the parents will be affected all the same. Additional support from friends and family, the community or even paid caregivers becomes crucial in maintaining harmony at home.

1. Emotional Issues

Parents of mentally challenged children often go through a gamut of emotions over time. They mostly struggle with an overwhelming feeling of guilt. One or both parents may feel as though they somehow are responsible for the child’s disability. Their reasons may range from genetics, alcohol abuse, depression, or other logical or illogical reasons. This kind of guilt can be harmful for the parent's emotional wellbeing if it is not dealt with the right way. Some parents struggle with "why" and experience a spiritual crisis or put the blame on the other parent which creates

further complications in an otherwise smooth life. Most parents want their children to live up to their expectations and aspirations. Some of them may experience severe disappointment that their kid may not turn out to be whoever they had in mind. These parents must deal with the "death" of the perfect image of a child that they’ve had in their minds all along and gradually learn to love and accept the child they are blessed with. Sometimes, parents also feel embarrassed that their child is mentally disabled. 2. Education-Related Issues

The parent of a child with mental disability may encounter complex situations related to their child’s education. They would either have to hunt out a private special school for disabled children or look for an appropriate public education school that will admit their kid. Commuting may require a special bus or a van. Children with severe disabilities may need to be sent to a special education school for mentally challenged kids. 3. Financial Concerns Raising a mentally challenged child is more expensive. There are various things that are paid for at home, for example, expenses arising from medical equipment and supplies, health care, caregiving expenses, education, tuition and specialized transportation require more money as they are all necessary.
