JOHN HEASTON SHARES HISTORY OF THE READER Looking back on his 30-plus years in publishing, John Heaston readily admits that he had no early ambitions to be in the media business. After studying finance in college, he relocated to Omaha in the 1990s. As a military brat, he had previously lived in Omaha during high school. His stint here was meant to be temporary. “I wanted to go work for World Bank,” Heaston said. “I was ready to move to Connecticut and then go to school at Fairfield University, where I’d been accepted.” He wasn’t idle in Omaha, however. He was among a group of fellow University of Nebraska Omaha students who had been renting venues to host area bands when they decided to present their biggest event yet, a New Year’s Eve show at Sokol Auditorium in South Omaha. “The other halls held maybe 300, 500 people,” he said, adding that Sokol, now named The Admiral, could hold several times that capacity.

Heaston was stunned to discover that closure was imminent for the circa-1926 venue. A fire inspection had called for repairs and upgrades estimated at more than a million dollars. Word on the street was that a fast-food restaurant would replace the historic building. “My family comes from that neighborhood. And so, for some reason, I felt some ownership here, even though I really didn’t grow up in Omaha,” he said. Heaston’s efforts to find preservation funding were unsuccessful, but he chipped away at a solution, involving several friends, pitching coverage to the Omaha World-Herald and appealing to city authorities. The result was a new inspection considering standards for historic buildings. “It ended up costing $1,800,” Heaston said. Helping save the Sokol also sparked Heaston’s interest in journalism. He and other young locals decided to create a publication focusing on the area’s music scene, arts and culture. Sound News &

Arts came out in 1992. “I really enjoyed it, and I thought it mattered,” he said. “At the time, it was so much about culture and kind of alternative culture that had no place in the usual media outlets.” A group of Creighton University student journalists helped produce the first monthly editions. “We did them in the Creighton journalism lab at night. We would hide when security came by,” Heaston said. The community was ready for an alternative newsweekly, and advertisers were also taking notice as the local arts and culture scene began to flourish. “There was never a grand plan. It was just kind of an idea,” Heaston said. “The reception and support it got is what made everything else happen.” In 1994, The Reader was launched as a tabloid alternative

newsweekly with a focus on arts and culture, distributed free throughout the city and soon supported by a solid cohort of advertisers. Heaston had enough faith in the publication to quit his night job two years later. Over time, The Reader published tens of thousands of articles, reaching an estimated peak audience of 100,000-plus through various channels. It received numerous industry awards and outlasted multiple competitors. Heaston and Dan Beckmann were among The Reader’s handful of founders, but the others departed for other careers within a few years. Beckmann and Heaston had different visions for the publication. In late 1999, Beckmann bought out ownership from Heaston and sold controlling interest shortly after to Alan Baer of the Brandeis family, who was in his late 70s. Baer took up the position of publisher in May 2000. By then, Heaston was publishing the Omaha Weekly, a new

alternative newsweekly distributed via direct mail. After Baer’s November 2002 death, Heaston accepted an offer to buy back The Reader and assume ownership of its parent company, Pioneer Publishing. He merged The Reader and the Omaha Weekly into the Omaha Weekly Reader. He also began TheReader.com. By 2004, Heaston’s print publication resumed its former name. “The Reader was a bigger brand and had been around longer,” Heaston said. “So, we retired that extended name.” The early 2000s were also a period of growth and evolution for Pioneer Publishing as Heaston adjusted to the changing media industry and sought to diversify. By 2010, the company included El Perico, a

bilingual Spanish/English publication; internet-based omahajobs.com; and PioneerMedia.Me, which offered digital marketing and media consulting. Heaston also co-founded the Omaha Entertainment & Arts Awards and joined the board of the Mildred D. Brown Memorial Study Center (associated with the Omaha Star). In 2019, Heaston began serving a three-year term as board president of the Association of Alternative Newsmedia (AAN). His accomplishments included spearheading collaborations with national Black and Hispanic press organizations, and in 2021/2022, Heaston was board treasurer for NAHP (National Association of Hispanic Publications). In 2015, The Reader went from weekly to monthly distribution and expanded its online presence. In 2020, it changed from a tabloid

format to a magazine size. In May 2023, Heaston announced that the now-combined The Reader and El Perico would cease publication in September. A farewell party took place in December, fittingly, at The Admiral — the original inspiration which inspired the whole enterprise. “In the grand scheme of things, I’m probably most proud to see where our alumni have gone and what they’ve done,” Heaston said. “I’ve heard from more than a few that we gave them a place to start when there weren’t many places around, particularly in journalism or design or in business.” Heaston said one of his biggest professional accomplishments was to find a sustainable revenue model. At the same time, he said, he failed to fully “future-proof” the business. Like the career he stumbled into, the end of The Reader did not come about the way Heaston had envisioned. “I figured they’d bury me with my fingers on the keyboard. I never considered retiring, never thought about not publishing,” he said. Cancer changed his perspective. Heaston was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in 2020. In his typical forthright manner, he blogged about the experience and his 2022 bone marrow/stem cell transplant in a blog called “Lick My Leukemia” (thereader.com/lick-myleukemia). His treatment is ongoing. “I thought I had seven to 10 years to totally future-proof [the business]. I guess the biggest role that I have in this whole thing is

making it rain, making sure we’re bringing in the money … So, to find somebody that could do it as well as I was doing it … it was going to take years to kind of reconfigure that team.” PioneerMedia.Me continues. So does Heaston’s advocacy work, which began with Reader coverage of systemic inequities and other social issues and his later involvement with El Perico and the Omaha Star locally and AAN and NAHP at the national level. “There’s a bigger conversation happening nationally about funding local media and the future of local media. Fortunately, I’ve got a seat at that table,” he said. “And along the way, [I am] doing what I can to kind of help this emerging new media ecosystem going on.” He added, “I think that’s one of the biggest contributions I can make to the industry, is to help others find the type of revenue streams that are very sustainable, very measurable, and really insulate local media against the vagaries of advertising and the challenges of membership.” Looking back, Heaston said he’s glad he took part in shepherding a “creative and cultural explosion.” “It’s a real honor to be able to work with people who love what they do,” he said. “I know I’m dealing with cancer, but I still feel like I’m one of the luckiest guys.”

TIMELINE:

1992 Sound News & Arts, a monthly nonprofit

publication focusing on local arts and culture, is launched by a group of college students including John Heaston. Heaston’s inspiration for publishing began with his investigation of rumors that the historic music venue Sokol Auditorium was closing and his subsequent efforts to find a way to keep it open.

1994 The Reader, a free alternative newsweekly distributed locally, is co-founded by Heaston, Dan Beckmann and others.

1999 Beckmann buys out Heaston for ownership of The Reader in November.

2000 Beckmann sells controlling interest in March to 77-year-old Alan Baer, who becomes the new publisher in May. 2000 Heaston begins publishing the Omaha Weekly, a

new alternative newsweekly with direct mail distribution, in March.

2002 After Baer’s November death, Heaston buys back

The Reader, assuming ownership of Pioneer Publishing, and merges The Reader with the Omaha Weekly to create

a new publication called the Omaha Weekly Reader. TheReader.com is established.

2004 The Omaha Weekly Reader is reestablished as The

Reader.

Heaston purchases ABM Enterprises/El Perico from Marcos Mora, who started the bilingual publication for the Latino market in 1999.

2015 The Reader changes from weekly to monthly distribution and augments online content. 2019 Heaston begins serving a three-year term as board president of AAN (Association of Alternative Newsmedia) after previously holding other leadership positions. 2020 The Reader changes from tabloid to 8” x 10” format.

Heaston co-founds the Omaha Entertainment & Arts Awards, also serving as an executive officer and board member over the years.

Heaston is diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. He blogs about the experience and his 2022 bone marrow stem cell transplant in a blog called “Lick My Leukemia” (thereader.com/lick-my-leukemia).

2005 Omahajobs.com, an online employment site, is purchased by Heaston.

2021 Heaston serves as board treasurer for NAHP (National Association of Hispanic Publications).

2007 Heaston is invited to join the Mildred D. Brown Memorial Study Center Inc. board by Omaha Star publisher Dr. Marguerita Washington. He serves as vice president 2009-2010/ 2018-2019 and president 2011-2012, and helps the Omaha Star become a nonprofit in 2019.

The new year is bringing positive changes for Midlands taxpayers. From incentives for energy efficiency to provisions aimed at the historic spike in inflation, favorable tax changes may lead to that nest egg snowballing in size – with a little help from your financial adviser friends, of course.

The SECURE Act 2.0

Ross Polking, lead advisor-business development at Foster Group, highlighted legislation introduced last year designed to bring income tax relief for Nebraskans. “Individual and business income state tax rates will begin dropping progressively over the next few years,” Polking said. “Social Security benefits will no longer be subjected to state income tax as well.” Additional child care and property tax credits are down the pike.

The SECURE Act 2.0, which requires most employers to enroll eligible employees in the company’s retirement plan, brings new changes in 2024. More notably, the required minimum distribution age has increased to 73. “Across the country, SECURE Act 2.0 included many provisions that will be effective in 2024,” Polking stated. “Individuals and businesses need to check in with their CPA on how these changes impact their situation, and plan accordingly. Here again, he emphasized maneuvering change with proactive, consultative advisory teams. “Most every decision individuals and business owners make have some tax ramification associated,” he said.

decrease in 2027 in the top corporate income tax rate from 7.5% to 3.99%. “Retirement plan contribution limits are being increased, which allows for further sheltering of income for employees and owners alike,” he said. “One of the most celebrated tax law changes for business owners comes via the pass-through entity tax (PTET) law.” The PTET change reportedly allows for “pass-through” entities (businesses taxed as partnerships or subchapter S corporations) to voluntarily elect to pay state income taxes on behalf of their owners. “This avoids the impact of the SALT (state and local tax) cap by shifting the tax from the business owner to the owner’s business, effectively creating a deductible business expense that is not impacted by the SALT cap,” Polking said. Brian Klintworth, partner at HBE LLP, noted that PTET is top of mind for many businesses. “Due to the tax changes from 2017’s Tax Cuts & Jobs Act (TCJA), individuals generally lost the ability to benefit from deducting state income taxes on their personal return. So, this can lead to some significant savings,” Klintworth said.

The ABCs of Tax Planning 2024 BRINGS NEW TAX RELIEF IN NEBRASKA

Most every decision individuals and business owners make have some tax ramification associated. ROSS POLKING, LEAD ADVISOR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, FOSTER GROUP CONTINUED

Both Nebraska and Iowa passed PTET laws this year, he said, and both have a “retroactive component,” with Nebraska from 2018 to 2022 and Iowa for 2022. “Nebraska also will be lowering the top tax rate between now and 2027, ultimately reducing the top rate from 6.84% in 2022 to 3.99% in 2027,” Klintworth noted. “A possible change that is coming is the sunset of many of the beneficial tax provisions of the TCJA after 2025.” He listed the following potential changes: • Estate limitations being cut in half • Tax rates going up • Tax brackets getting smaller (so, a taxpayer hits the higher tax rates with lower income) • Elimination of the QBI Deduction (currently, allows for most business income that flows to an individual return to have 20% of the business income not subject to federal tax) “Not only is this currently scheduled to happen, but uncertainty about what will or will not happen following the 2024 elections means there is a lot of uncertainty about what tax policy will look like in the coming years,” Klintworth summed up. While PTET does require a bit of planning, he emphasized how it

can yield major tax benefits. “While this will help increase the benefits to many business owners, it does add some filing complexity and cash flow considerations to be thinking about,” he said.

Savings Opportunities

Kimberly Kropp, partner at Moylan Kropp, isolated new tax law changes such as the lowest rate of 10% will apply to individuals with taxable income up to $11,600 (and joint filers up to $23,200). “The top rate of 37% will apply to individuals making above $609,350 and married couples filing jointly earning $731,200 or more,” Kropp said. “The standard deduction will increase by $750 for single filers and $1,500 for married.” The alternative minimum tax (AMT) exemption, too, will be higher. “The earned income tax credit has been boosted,” she added. “Monthly limitation for the qualified transportation fringe benefit [is] increasing by $15.” Changes spanned allowable flexible spending account (FSA) contributions, increased foreign earned exclusion, and how beneficiaries can exclude more of a “decedent’s” estate – from $12.92 million in 2023 to $13.61 million. Likewise, the annual exclusion for gifts is increasing from $17,000 to $18,000. And, lastly, she noted how

On the business front, she isolated the SALT deductions and in-state pass-through entity change, noting how this can offer significant benefits to owners. But, she cautioned: “complex determinations [depend] on a variety of factors that involve both federal income tax rules as well as state tax rules.” CONTINUED

Business owners, too, he indicated should be aware of the decrease in bonus depreciation on capital expenditures – from 100% of the asset’s cost in 2022 to 80% in 2023. “Another change that came into effect in tax year 2022, but is a large change that is in effect in 2023, is the requirement that businesses capitalize and amortize their research and development expenses, rather than getting to deduct them immediately,” Donovan stated. “Finally, more businesses are being impacted by the business interest limitation due to interest expense being higher in 2023, leading to greater limitations.” Businesses are also being impacted potentially by the energy-efficient credits for individuals; for example, he referred to credits for building energy-efficient structures or housing, both single and multi-family, as well as energy-efficient investments in vehicles, and solar, geothermal, and wind power updates to one’s operations. “Tax laws related to businesses are very nuanced,” he stressed. “Consulting with your tax adviser can help you plan for tax law changes and ensure your business is taking advantage of applicable benefits.”

with tax law changes and taxes, in general, is to give yourself and your business adequate time to plan and react instead of trying to do a full year’s worth of planning in the last month of the year.” Klintworth said now is a great time to close the books, get data in order, prepare for tax season and for ’24 and beyond. “The more on top of your information you can stay throughout the year, the better off you will end up,” he said. “It’s much easier to start on track than to try and catch up later. Also, if you’ve been looking at making changes – maybe a new bank, accounting software, or other items – the start of the year can be a great time to make a switch.”

Strategy Above All

Amid all the change, there remains some time-tested wisdom. “Meet with your advisory team and strategically plan for the year ahead,” Polking said. “Better yet, have a pre-meeting in the fourth quarter of the year prior.” Kropp, too, emphasized year-end and beginning-of-year meetings with accountants to understand tax law changes that have occurred or are in the works and to address “if all goals were met and what to look ahead to for improvement in the next year.” Get ahead by creating a plan, Donovan stressed. “Once you have a plan, it should be reviewed quarterly with your advisor so you can adjust as you go,” he stated. “The best way to deal

COUNSELING

LOCALLY owned MEAD LUMBER PRESIDENT DAVE ANDERSON AT AN APARTMENT PROJECT NEAR 148TH AND D STREETS, OF WHICH THE COMPANY PROVIDED LUMBER FOR.

Mead Lumber A LEGACY BUILT ON RELATIONSHIPS At first glance, the lumber industry may seem stagnant, but industry veteran Dave Anderson said it’s anything but. Anderson became president of Mead Lumber, a 113-year-old Nebraska-based company, in 2020. “If you think about it, the improvement in efficiency gains over the years is unbelievable,” he said. “From a technology standpoint, from an equipment standpoint, even the products, are different today than they used to be.” And, he said, there is still plenty of room for growth.

Strong Roots

Since Morton Mead founded the company in Ashland, Nebraska, it has strategically grown across nine midwestern states and accumulated 53 operating locations. The company recently purchased Component Manufacturing Company and Reaves Buildings in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Like

many of the companies Mead Lumber acquires Component and Reaves will maintain their historic names. “People that live in Nebraska for a long time, especially in small towns, know Mead Lumber because we have 16 or so lumber yards across the state,” he said. “But, in other states, we’ve acquired companies and when we go to the market we don’t want to lose the culture or [name recognition.]” In a bid to safeguard name recognition, Mead Lumber has gone a different route: matching branding through color, logo and tagline. For example, the Reaves Building logo will be rebranded to match Mead Lumber’s signature red font. This is a fairly new strategy for the company, which recently completed a branding strategy overhaul to align all assets. While general admin work and big-picture strategy decisions are made by a lean team based out of Omaha, a lot of decisions are made by store and regional managers.

We have hourly, non-management employees that have worked with us for 20-30 years and will retire millionaires. - DAVE ANDERSON, PRESIDENT, MEAD LUMBER

MEAD’S LUMBERYARD IN LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.

“We’re selling the same products across different markets, but the markets themselves are different; the customers are different, so what might work in one market, might not work in another,” Anderson said. Store managers are also in charge of ensuring that employees understand the company’s core values, a major component being an investment in the employees themselves and their communities. “We support local events and organizations and we leave that up to each location because every community is different,” Anderson said.

Planting Tenure

Many of the companies Mead Lumber has acquired were originally family-owned businesses. And, in a similar vein to Mead Lumber, had arrived at a generation that did not want to continue. In 2014, Mead Lumber’s leadership decided the solution was to convert the company into a 100% employee-owned company, a strategy that has, and continues to, attract companies with similar values. Mainly, companies that put people first. “There are big, national players that are very aggressive from an acquisition standpoint … and they have the ability to cut the check,” Anderson said. “But we can compete with them because of what we bring as an employee-owned company and that culture.” Because of Mead Lumber’s reputation, selling companies know that their former employees will be taken care of, and will have a chance to prosper through the employee stock program. Mead Lumber employees who have worked 1,000 hours — for example, 40 hours per week for 25 weeks — are eligible for an allocation of the company’s stock. That stock grows each year and is valued by an outside company. “We have hourly, non-management employees that have worked with us for 20-30 years and will retire millionaires,” Anderson said. The caveat is that it takes time to see those changes; about three years according to Anderson. That’s a major challenge for employees in the lumberyard or truss plants where retention numbers are lower. “Our industry is still hands-on, and even though technology has improved things it’s still hard work,” he said. In addition to stock options, the company has a 401(k) plan — which over 90% of employees participate in — medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, holiday pay, and flex spending accounts.

Branching Out

Not all work is done in the lumberyard or truss plants, though. Mead Lumber also hires engineers, architects, and designers to help cater to customers who wish to design custom homes, either newly built or renovated. For example, contractors and DIY customers can receive guidance with everything from cost estimates to blueprints and material orders. That requires professionals who know the market, know the product, and have the technical knowledge to execute a customer’s vision. “We work with a lot of technical colleges because we want to show what it is you can do, especially on the design, engineering, and architecture side,” Anderson said. It also needs employees with Class A or Class B licenses to transport goods, as well as employees to install products, such as insulation, gutters, soffit and fascia, and garage doors. The company also operates some retail hardware stores and considers its “comfort zone” to be “from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River, North Dakota to Oklahoma.” “Because we’re across nine states, and each community is different, it provides us a lot of diversification,” Anderson said. “We stay pretty even keel.”

Participating in the Offutt Angel Tree program, the SAC Foundation, Cobalt Credit Union’s charitable arm, allocated $600 to fulfill the holiday wishes of 10 families associated with Offutt Air Force Base. For those airmen and women who are not with their families during the holidays, Cobalt donated $500 to the Greater Bellevue Area Chamber of Commerce “Operation Holiday Cheer.” An additional donation of $500 was made through the credit union’s partnership with the Sarpy Chamber. Remembering the children who could not be with their families, Cobalt contributed $2,700 to the Boys Town Holiday Pasta Dinner.
