With the dawning of a new year, many people’s attention is on the impending annual tax preparation. But those who focus solely on April are missing out on key opportunities to improve during the remaining 11 months of the year.

“One of the things we see businesses forget to do is look at what are the capital expenditures they anticipate for the coming year, and make sure those are in their projections or budget,” said David Hartman, chief lending officer with

Core Bank. “Whether it’s equipment or vehicles, whatever you need to make your business run, you want to put those into the budget on the front end so you can manage your cashflow.

“If you have the ability to pay cash for an item, maybe that’s less of a planning issue. But if you are looking at borrowing, this year in particular, you really are going to have to take into account the higher borrowing costs.”

Financial experts like Hartman concur over the opening months of the year being

prime opportunities for planning and forecasting. This, they say, is even more critical in 2023 when the financial climate is still recovering from the pandemic and recession is on the minds of most economists.

“What all businesses, including us, do on an annual basis is prepare a budget for the following year or, basically, projections for the following year, based on historical performance,” Hartman said. “Right now, some historical performance is a little more difficult because of what

we came through with PPP. So, what we’ve been looking at is, where were we at prior to the pandemic? Go back to see what you were looking at for a budget and projections for 2018 and 2019 and start there.”

Uncharted Waters

The watchword in each of the past two years has been uncertainty as the world attempts to moderate the unprecedented upheavals of 2020, and 2023 dawns no differently. Per theascent.com, economists

are all over the map when it comes to economic predictions: “from OK to bad to very bad,” an article on the matter states. Depending on the source, the industry’s top priorities range from cryptocurrency to ESG to shoring up the supply chain, with seemingly no agreement. All of this is enough to complicate things as business owners attempt to grow or allocate financial resources.

Chris Bedient, partner with HBE Wealth Management, said not unlike individual New Year’s resolutions, a business should

start with tangible goals for the coming year. He recommends setting these by quarter with first-quarter planning devoted to reviewing existing investment portfolio performance as of the end of the previous year and evaluating whether the asset allocation should be changed based on financial objectives.

“Some people naively take the financial results of the prior year, apply a modest growth rate, then set their expectations for the coming year,” he said. “We advise clients to diligently review the

prior year’s financials and develop a list of 10 things impacting their business or personal situation that they didn’t plan on happening during the prior year but impacted their financial situation.”

Bedient said all business owners and entrepreneurs should pay particular attention to “what ifs” in this step, especially given the high degree of uncertainty 2023 represents. He also pointed to changes in interest rates as

a very important variable, substantially affecting the price of borrowing money.

“Business balance sheets have added significant cash since 2020,” he said. “At that time, interest rates available on cash were very low by historical standards, but significantly increased in 2022. It’s important that people evaluate the rate of interest available and continue to have an appropriate reserve for their situation.

“Larry Swedroe, head of financial

and economic research at Buckingham Strategic Wealth, always says ‘My crystal ball is cloudy,’ when asked about what he thinks will happen in the short-term. This is a helpful reminder to not be too certain about the future.”

Stick To Basics

Kim Kropp, owner of Moylan Kropp, said paying attention to the fundamentals is critical in all industries including

keeping overhead costs in line and modeling strategies for worst-case scenarios. She said in addition to looking at historical performance and goal setting, business owners should formulate plans on how to reach the goals they set. This means breaking down resources and leveraging personnel and resources department by department and category by category.

“Goals should be set for the year by the beginning of the first quarter of the year, and should include team goals, individual employee goals, new and retained money goals and marketing goals,” she said. “These are important to have set and ready to go at the beginning of the quarter because it puts everyone on the same page and at work immediately. Instead of wasting time trying to figure out goals, your business can hit the ground running Day One.”

Kropp said first-quarter activity is among the most important for the fact that it gives decision-makers sufficient time to make adjustments and shore up underperforming areas.

“Nothing’s better than planning at the beginning of the year, because if adjustments need to be made, it could

take time to get this accomplished,” she said. “In recessionary times and slowdowns, it is proactive to have extra financial reserves as a backup in case profits are less and inflation causes expenses to increase.

“As an owner, you always want to be able to pay your employees and fund their retirement and profit-sharing plans. It just makes sense to have extra reserves at the beginning of the year, especially when the economic forecast calls for a recession.”

Adversity Equals Opportunity

Ryan Swartz, partner and managing director for Creative Planning, said another goal for the work done in the first quarter is to help eliminate being unduly reactionary during the coming year, even

when the unexpected invariably happens.

“Businesses, entrepreneurs and individuals alike should be assessing cash flow needs in a budgeting process for the following year,” he said. “Any potential investments, equipment, staffing, or large cash outlays should be modeled to determine the actual allocation of funds to meet these obligations.

“It is important to have a projection in order to anticipate seasonal cash flow needs and allocate investment funds in the best way. When you move to being proactive in this regard, it allows you to be more intentional with your funds and mindful of those allocations.”

As for the uncertainty of financial times in the new year, Swartz reminds clients to not only focus on the potential pitfalls of such periods but to also be aware of the

opportunities arising out of such markets.

“Being in the middle of a market downturn, or even a bear market, may present unique opportunities,” he said.

“Consider being objective regarding your annual investment plan and cash flows to accelerate retirement plan deferrals, evaluate tax harvesting opportunities or rebalancing the portfolio to add to equities during the weakness for longterm investment time frames.

“From a business standpoint this could be a good opportunity to expand, add key employees, invest for the business or restructure long-term debt. Consider engaging a fiduciary and financial coach to help set and adhere to those plans in an objective way. Some of the best times to invest, historically, have been during the most unnerving times.”

TIPS ON MAKING THE BEST PLAN FOR YOU

Retirement life is not the same for everyone. Some people want to spend their retired years traveling around the world, others want to volunteer more around their community, and others simply want to relax at

home, surrounded by their friends and family. Creating the type of retired lifestyle that you want requires some forethought. To reach your retirement goals, there are some important things to keep in mind as you start planning.

Creating a Retirement Budget

For many people stepping into retirement, they will switch to a fixed income that will require careful

budgeting. So, before you plan to retire, look closely at your spending and necessary expenditures.

“The first tip is to be honest with yourself about your monthly expenses,” said Justin Vossen, investment advisor

Page 12 • January 13, 2023
RETIREMENT FOCUS SECTION

and principal at Lutz Financial. “Make sure you understand what those are before you decide to retire.

“Many folks have no idea. There are free spreadsheet templates online that will help you break out your expenses and remind you of many items you may forget about. The fewer fixed expenses you have in retirement, the more flexible you can be with your budget. Also, work to understand your future tax burden as it relates to your sources of future income. More than likely, your taxes paid will change as you move into retirement, obviously depending on your future sources of income.”

Planning for the Unexpected

While much of retirement is living spontaneously and enjoying life as it comes, it also requires preparing for the unforeseen.

“As cliché’ as it sounds, we need to prepare for the unexpected,” Vossen said. “I don’t think anyone guessed we’d have close to a 9% inflation rate this year.

“You must have a cushion built into your plans to absorb some of these unexpected things that happen during retirement. Other things you need to prepare for are longevity, market fluctuations, increases in expenses, health issues, and unexpected family needs that you may not have the day you decide to retire. A good financial plan builds in some level of a cushion or contingency; otherwise, you need to be able to adjust on the fly by reducing expenses.”

Health Considerations

To get the most out of your retirement, it’s important to keep both physical and mental health a priority –and this begins well before retirement. So, advocate for yourself and stay on top of preventative exams and checkups. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your medical team about creating a strategy to maintain or improve your health as you age. This might include coming up with a diet and exercise

plan or discussing medications or treatments that you will need as you enter retirement.

Retirement can also bring changes to mental health. Not going to work on a regular basis may mean social interactions may diminish, and feelings of loneliness and isolation may set in.

“While it’s important to stay physically as healthy as we can, it’s also important to remember to stay mentally healthy,” said Nate Underwood, founder and president of Heritage Communities. “This involves things like growing and nurturing a social circle, having events to look forward to, and meaningful activities.”

In a September 2022 Methodist Health article, Dr. Lindy Fields wrote: “Socializing plays a key role in keeping your mind sharp. You might not realize it but engaging in conversation requires a lot of cognitive abilities, including attention, language, memory and complex thinking. This socialization can take the form of calling a friend or family member on the phone, meeting up with someone for a meal or coffee, or engaging in local community events.”

Health Care Costs

The price of health care continues to increase, so it is critical to plan on how you will pay for those on a fixed income.

Vossen noted that long-term planning with a financial professional will help alleviate some of the stress that comes with planning for unknown medical costs.

“When we do retirement planning for clients, we actually inflate future medical expenses at a higher rate of inflation than other retirement expenses,” he said. “Understand what you will be paying to Medicare based on your modified adjusted gross income in retirement to start and then add a rate of inflation annually from 4.5%6%. It’s hard to believe that medical expenses could continue to rise at recent rates over the next 30 years, but it is probably less realistic to think they rise at only normal longer-run inflation

rates of 3% or so.”

Some retirees may wish to move to a retirement community, while others might need to live in an assisted care facility. There are many advantages that come with these living situations,

but a move like this will require additional financial planning.

“The largest [benefit] is the ‘community’ that each resident joins,” said Stephanie Grade, regional vice president of operations at Oviation

by Avamere. “Finding new friendships and engaging in social activities is so important … also reducing the stress in their living environment through the amenities, such as housekeeping services, on-site maintenance, on-site restaurants, and transportation services.

“These are amazing benefits that allow you to simply relax and enjoy your time. Make sure to visit various communities so you get a feel for how they are. When you are visiting with senior living professionals, be very honest about your

health and what lifestyle you really want as you age with assistance.”

Underwood explained that there are some health care options that can help offset the cost of assisted care facilities, and shares that research is key to making the right location decision.

“I recommend learning more about long-term care insurance, VA benefits and Medicare and Medicaid,” he said. “You will want to know what each of these financial tools will do for you and what they will not.

“Even within long-term care policies, be certain you understand what will be covered and what will not. It sounds very simple, but care is provided by people. It’s important to move into a care setting where you feel like you can build a relationship and rapport with the staff in the building. If you are able, speak to other residents and their families about their care experience. Ask key staff how long they have been with the company and how they feel they are supported. In many ways you are interviewing folks

for a very important job – the privilege of taking care of you or your loved one.”

Retirement can be some of the most rewarding years of your life. Setting goals and finding tangible ways to meet them will help you maximize your new workfree life. Plan for not only the nuts and bolts of retirement, but also things that bring fulfillment and joy along the way.

“As you step into a new chapter and phase of retirement, I believe finding purpose is of great importance,” Grade said.

Communication in Crisis

LEADERSHIP SARPY PANEL LEADS IMPORTANT DISCUSSION

“In a crisis, how do you gauge the timeline of communication? How do you decide what to communicate and when?”

“Who, at the company, should be involved in crafting a crisis plan? How often should you evaluate that plan?” “How can you analyze the effectiveness of your communication?”

These are important questions that every business should be asking, but they’re also just a handful of the questions Leadership Sarpy participants got to ask a panel of experts on public communication in a crisis. The panel included Annette Eyman, DirectorCommunications Papillion La Vista Community Schools; Jeff Calentine, Deputy Director of Public Works City of La Vista; Matt Hardebeck, Director, Innovation and Continuous Improvement at Omaha Public Power District; Captain Jeremy Kinsey, City of La Vista Police Department. All of these speakers shared valuable insight from their own experiences as well as unique insight into the numerous times their organizations needed to coordinate and collaborate.

The group also heard from Captain Kevin Griger with the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department. Griger outlined the tragic events surrounding an active shooter situation in Colorado in 2006 that lead to the creation of I Love You Guys Foundation, an organization that dedicated its efforts to creating an effective plan for schools in a crisis situation. The result was the Standard Response Protocol, a unified plan for the 4 school districts in Sarpy County. Griger has worked to adapt this plan to businesses and gave an overview of how it works. The Sarpy Sheriff’s Department will work with businesses in the county to teach SRP and help businesses implement it. The session was impactful and eye-opening for many Leadership Sarpy participants. Earlier in the day, they were given the opportunity to test their own skills and knowledge through a crisis simulation. They were tasked with making hard decisions in hard situations while also trying to communicate internally as an organization and externally to the public.

UNWAVERING ADVOCATE

We are your unwavering advocate. As business owners, neighbors and friends, we are Sarpy. Our whole hearts are into making a better future for all of us. As a connector of solutions and a helping hand to members, Sarpy Chamber provides

Crisis management is a critical organizational function for a business and it encompasses more than just violence. It should also account for weather, fire, injury or illness. Failure can result in serious harm to employees and stakeholders, losses for an organization, or even end its very existence. This is why the topic of crisis management is an integral part of Leadership Sarpy, a program that develops people personally and professionally for leadership positions not only in their place of work, but in the community as a whole. Applications for the next Leadership Sarpy class will be open soon so check sarpychamber.org/leadership-sarpy for all the latest.

Paul Fishburn

RTG MEDICAL NAMES FISHBURN VICE PRESIDENT OF HEALTHCARE STAFFING

RTG Medical (Fremont, NE) is proud to announce that Paul Fishburn has been named Vice President of Healthcare Staffing. Karna Dam, Community Engagement Representative noted that “Paul has a broad understanding of the industry and a management style that is inspiring and motivating. His experience mixed with a natural sense of mutual respect for co-workers makes him the perfect fit for this position.”

Fishburn brings an extraordinary resume to this position that will help lead RTG Medical’s Sales Team, magnifying the production of the rapidly growing company. Fishburn brings 16-years of industry experience beginning as an Account Manager, moving into leadership roles within C & A Industries and most recently serving as the Director of RTG Medical’s Major Accounts and Interim Director of the Long-Term Care Division. “I am excited and humbled to be stepping into the role as Vice President of Healthcare Staffing at RTG Medical. We have a very bright future in front of us! The sky is the limit! Onward and upward!!” said Fishburn.

RTG Medical is led by Charlie Janssen, President and CEO and Chief Operations Officer, Jeremy Guenthner. Founded in 2001, RTG Medical is a veteran-owned healthcare staffing company. The RTG Medical team works every day to alleviate the national healthcare provider shortage by matching the highest-quality traveling healthcare professionals with facilities across the country.

In addition to being a six-time Inc. 5000 recipient for Fastest Growing Privately Held Companies, RTG Medical is proud to have been recognized by Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) as a 2021 Largest Healthcare Staffing Firms in the United States, three-time Baird Holm LLP Best Places to Work in Omaha; sponsored by the Greater Omaha Chamber and two-time Excellence in Philanthropy sponsored by the Greater Omaha Chamber. Focusing on company culture and employee wellness, RTG Medical was recognized as Merit Award’s 2022 Gold Medal recipient for Healthcare.

RTG Medical’s Chief Operations Officer, Jeremy Guenthner shared that “We are in a very competitive industry driven by passionate people. If that is mishandled with a void or deficit of leadership, it can often lead to stress and chaos. When we began our process of searching for the leader of our core healthcare staffing division we were looking for someone who could execute vision, but also could bring calm to the room. We were looking for someone who brings a level of maturity that could see the big picture and lead with a steady hand. Someone with an instinct for timing in knowing when it is time to patiently wait as well as know when it’s time to act. We were looking for someone who could challenge norms and stretch others to grow in ways that they may not initially be comfortable with.

We were very fortunate to have our leader already under our roof. Paul Fishburn is a calm leader that I am confident offers a peace to potential storms, level-headed thinking, and challenges the norms that define the way things have always been done. I am very excited to watch and work with Paul to see the new heights that his leadership brings to RTG Medical in 2023 and the years to come.”
