Planning well for taxes and a solid financial future can feel overwhelming. Where should you start? What are the best strategies to ensure you are set up well? Several Nebraskabased financial professionals weigh in on what tactics are most effective to safeguard your money and establish practices that help you reach your financial goals.

Set Goals Mike Egermier, Certified Financial Planner at Egermier Wealth Management Group, noted that before meeting with a financial adviser, it is important to know your financial situation as much as possible.

“Getting your financial life organized prior to meeting with a professional is a good first step,” he said. “By this, I mean making a list of assets, debt and future goals and obligations. Maintaining financial wellness is an ongoing process and something that will need to be reexamined with regular ‘checkups.’ In order to achieve and maintain financial wellness, you must have a roadmap in place, so you know what you are trying to accomplish.” Brian Klintworth, CPA and tax director for HBE, noted that thinking about your goals is one of the most important steps you can take when it comes to planning for your taxes or financial future. “You don’t need to have all the right

answers, but you have to take the time to formulate your goals and work with your team to achieve those goals.”

Find a Financial Team You Trust Talking about finances is personal, so finding someone that you trust is key. Spend some time researching local financial experts in the area to determine which company is the best fit for you and your unique financial situation. Finding the right team of advisers to support you and the goals that you’ve outlined is a critical part to your success in sticking to a fiscal plan. “Having good tax and financial advisers can help with the little

decisions and the big decisions but focus overall on ensuring that you’re putting yourself on a firm footing for your future and for your family,” Klintworth said. “There are so many nuances to consider that it’s important to have that right team. “Note that I talk about team, because it’s not about having a good investment adviser or tax adviser, but having both of those relationships, along with others such as attorneys and insurance brokers, to ensure that they all are looking out for your best interest. It is not always fun to start the process, but once you have a good financial plan in place, you’ll end up feeling so much better and more confident.” Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to the basics of financial wellness, is to prioritize saving. “My advice would be to start with a strong foundation by focusing on saving as much as possible while maintaining a good life balance,” Egermier said. “The earlier you start, the better your chance you will have of your savings goals being successful. Having financial wellness

is a lot like having health wellness. We all know how to stay healthy (diet and exercise). In the world of financial wellness, boiled down to its simplest form, is to save more then you spend.” When it comes to taxes, it’s important to plan well, too. That means, you should make sure you assess your withholdings every year to determine if it’s what works best for your family. “Our standard jumping off point is withholding 15% federal and 5% state taxes, but it will vary based on the individual’s income,” Egermier said. “Taxes are very fluid and seem to change regularly. “For example, earlier [last] year

we anticipated the passage of new legislation that would increase taxes, especially on high-net-worth individuals. That legislation never passed, but it still could in the future. Since the tax environment is constantly evolving, I always recommend we review tax withholdings annually, and making adjustments as necessary.”

Tackling these issues head on can help make things less stressful and allow you to focus on the more important items – like family, hobbies, and those around you.”

we learned that we all need each other. If that’s not a call to action to become a mentor, I don’t know what is.”

Responding to Change For more than 20 years, MENTOR Nebraska – an affiliate chapter of MENTOR, The National Mentoring Partnership, based in Boston – has assisted in the mentor ecosystem statewide by providing training, no-cost consulting, recruitment and advocacy. The organization supports and collaborates with more than 200 programs, serving more than 14,000 youth. And yet for all of that, the organization finds itself in uncharted waters as groups struggle to reignite mentoring programs decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic. “The number of mentors, even yearover-year over the past two years, has decreased and a lot has to do with how we’ve responded to the pandemic,” Mayo said. “Programs had to, for all intents and purposes, stop recruitment because they were responding to community mandates

and health mandates. “Now that we are on the other side of understanding how we adapt and shift when there are changes and whether we can be in person or social distance and things like that, things are picking up again.”

True Value There’s a good and simple reason why organizations are not throwing in the towel on reviving their mentor programs – such efforts pay off with youth who are far more likely to engage in positive activities and steer clear of trouble. According to MENTOR Nebraska statistics, children and youth who have a mentor are 52% less likely to skip school, 55% more likely to attend college, 81% more likely to participate regularly in sports and other extra curriculars and 130% more likely to hold leadership positions within these activities. Yet despite these numbers, many youths are still left without the positive interaction that lies at the heart of the mentoring relationship. “Everyone, especially every young person, deserves to have someone in their corner who’s outside of their family,” Mayo said. “But we know that not every young person grows up with a mentor in their life. In fact, nationally, about one in three young people are growing up without an adult mentor outside of their immediate family.”

Recruiting Founded by Michael Yanney and Dr. Tom Osborne in 1999 as Midlands Mentoring Partnership, MENTOR Nebraska takes an active role in helping organizations recruit more volunteers in ways that go beyond mere sloganeering. And it provides training and guidance to ensure those

volunteers are equipped to interact with a mentee with the proper mindset. “I think it’s important for organizations and volunteers to think about how to normalize mentoring so it’s not looked at as something that is ‘fixing’ something,” she said. “Somehow, when we think about young people and mentoring, it’s always looked at as fulfilling a need or a deficit. “It’s not necessarily what that young person is lacking, whether it is a parent, income or other factors like that. It’s about creating equitable access. Some young people have these support networks that are just embedded in their families and their communities, while others don’t. Our challenge is to reimagine what mentoring is about and who it’s for.” Organizations that can shift this mindset are also better positioned to overcome objections that prospective volunteers have to getting involved. Mayo said while time commitment is generally the mostcommon reason people give not to volunteer, the real reasons often run deeper to issues of mentors not seeing what they have to offer a young person. “We have to demystify all that you have to have accomplished to be a successful mentor,” she said. “Really, this is a relationship-focused activity where we take the approach of being a developmental mentor. What that means is the relationship is at the core, as opposed to being prescriptive about ‘I’m going to help you improve your grades,’ or ‘I’m going to help you get a job.’ “It’s really important for mentors to learn the things their mentee may be unfamiliar with because of the way they grew up or where they grew up. It’s much more important for mentors to just really show up

for a young person through the good, bad and ugly. Most of the time things are great, but life is life. Even as adults we don’t all have good days; we

have hiccups and struggles and so do kids. We stress the mindset that you’re not there to fix anything, you’re there to help navigate.”

LEVELING THE playing field DVLP BASKETBALL ELEVATES ACCESS FOR ATHLETES

Leveraging experience as a college basketball player, coach and the power of social media networks, Dvlp Basketball is metaphorically running circles around the basketball training and mentoring space. Since its launch at the height of the pandemic in May 2020, Dvlp (pronounced “Develop”) has grown from serving around four studentathletes to serving more than 100 student-athletes each month. “We have received some amazing feedback from parents and directly from student-athletes, letting us know how much we’re impacting them — on and off of the court,” said Chevelle “Coach Chevy” Saunsoci, Dvlp Basketball founder and CEO. “That is, no question, the most fulfilling thing about what we do.” Of course, as a provider of varied training and coaching opportunities, the Omaha-born Dvlp is naturally helping its student-athletes become better basketball players. “But our real goal is to impact student-athletes in a way that shifts their mindsets [positively], builds their confidence as young people, and

to give them tools that will apply to more aspects of their life than just basketball,” Saunsoci said. “So, when we receive those messages, it reassures us that we are on the right track.” And feedback from other coaches and programs has resoundingly focused on the team’s collaborative prowess. “Coaching teams is very time-consuming,” she said. “Many coaches not only have full-time jobs, but also have families. So, running their program and trying to support their athletes individually with skill development, for many, isn’t realistic.” Many readers may be familiar with Coach Chevy. Before she embarked on Dvlp, Saunsoci played and coached at the D1 level. Three or four years into her coaching career at Creighton University (around 2016 or 2017), she was inspired to embark on what would become a thriving mentoring and advisory concept. “My favorite part of being a college coach was the relationships that I was able to build with our players,” she recalled. “It was important to me to have an impact on players outside of just basketball … I realized

that a lot of the athletes who reach the college level had great corners [or] support systems at home — whether it was their family, their youth coaches, or other supporters who set them on a path to be successful.” Saunsoci reflected on her personal experience, realizing how lucky she was to have a support system as a player growing up in the area. “Both of my parents instilled discipline, they understood the value of showing up and consistency,” she said. “When we were stationed in Nebraska, I lucked out with a coach who really understood what I needed to do to make it to the college level, and I always had somewhere to go to play whenever I wanted.” Saunsoci kept seeing players on the recruiting trails with high potential – but no opportunities. “I wanted to give back what was given to me, which were support systems and resources that gave me the best chance to be successful,” she said.

Creating Opportunities

The aforementioned reference to being “stationed” in Nebraska harkens back to Saunsoci’s roots in a military family, as well as her entrepreneurial spirit and foundation. “When I was younger, I lived in Japan on the Air Force base and I’d always look for ways to earn money,” she said. “One was a lawn mowing business where I would go around our cul-de-sac with my ‘briefcase’ (a backgammon case) and ask if we could cut their grass. I dabbled in lemonade stands back then, too.” She got more serious about entrepreneurship following her college career. “I tried to start a company called Bookbag where I wanted to make it simpler for teachers to communicate to parents,” she said. “After struggling with the tech aspect of it, I let it go and got a regular job. But I’m thankful for that failed experience because it has prepared me a lot for where I am now.” And she intimately appreciates the opportunities in seemingly the bleakest of situations, the ability to make lemonade from lemons. “It’s been a steady growth for us,” Saunsoci said. “Starting in the pandemic seems to be more of a blessing in disguise, because it allowed us to refine who we are and how we are different in small group settings. “Now we are able to provide high-level training for larger groups, which I don’t know if it would have gone as well had we been able to take on

more athletes right away.” More to this evolution, Saunsoci said as Dvlp continues to grow, there will be a better understanding of the most effective training processes for athletes at different development stages. “We are working on a few pilot programs that I think are going very well,” she said. “I’m excited to continue testing and learning things to help more student-athletes as we go.” Saunsoci, who is surrounded by a team of collegiate coaching and player standouts, summed up that people appreciate their expertise and honesty. “That experience also gives us a unique lens to where we are not only able to tell the athletes we work with the truth, but we are also able to set them on a track to get them where they want to go,” she said, adding that, “We tell student-athletes and parents the truth, even if it means losing them as clients. It’s what helps athletes improve the most. I know that us staying true to that has resulted in a lot of referrals through parents and student-athletes.” Using Facebook and Instagram has also contributed to Dvlp’s growth, as a means to consistently showcase work through videos and pictures. “It allows people to get a look into the cool things we are doing,” she said. Going forward, the organization’s priority is to bridge the “access gap” to elite resources. “We want to build something that will allow all student-athletes to have access to elite facilities, people and resources, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds,” Saunsoci said. In fact, she characterizes Dvlp as a for-profit business with a nonprofit arm – the latter of which is designed solely to support athletes who would normally not be able to afford its services. “In order to achieve that, it is going to require us to continue building partnerships with organizations and facilities in the communities that we want to impact the most, which are North and South Omaha,” she said. Partnering organizations such as Abide, Milford Real Estate and Nissan of Omaha have all responded to the call for community support. “This is about more than just basketball. Sports gives us a different way to influence and mentor young future leaders,” she said. “While we feel we will have a major impact on the court, we’re even more confident about our impact off of it.”

Postponing the rebranding gave the Sarpy Chamber the bandwidth to oversee a range of community initiatives like a food drive, relief grants for businesses, and developing programs to offer membership at no-cost for small businesses. “Ultimately this delay served to sharpen our focus and perspective on who we are to our community, which gave us a strong clarity of purpose when the time came to reignite our rebranding process.” It was spring of 2021 when the chamber returned to the task of rebranding. worked with KidGlov, a marketing, branding, and advertising agency, as well as a Marketing Committee made up of six Sarpy Chamber board members. However, it was the Sarpy Chamber’s members and supporters who were the most important voice in the process. “From the start, we knew this branding needed to come from the perspectives of the people we’re committed to serving,” Gibler explained. As part of the branding process, KidGlov conducted survey research to determine the qualities of the Sarpy Chamber that resonate most with the community. The initial discovery session gathered feedback from the board of directors and continued with follow-up surveys completed by community partners and engaged members. “We were really honored to get the effusive feedback we received,” said Gibler. Survey results indicated

members most valued the Sarpy Chamber’s ability to create connections, its commitment to inclusion, and empowerment through leadership. “Our stakeholders lead us to a new look with updated messaging that best reflects who we have always been; your unwavering advocate.”
