SCOULAR SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF FINANCE OFFICER, ANDY KENNY, AND CEO PAUL MAASS
New Home for Legacy Business AG GIANT SCOULAR EMBARKS ON NEXT CHAPTER Scoular, an employee-owned agribusiness spanning 100-plus offices and 1,200-plus associates in North America and Asia, is embarking on its 130th year within a new global headquarters at 13660 California Street in Omaha. The headquarters is home to around 130 employees – roughly double the local headcount reported five years ago – well, at least on a Monday to Wednesday schedule anyway. “We felt it was important to create enough space for all employees to be in the office at the same time,” said Kelli Eickhoff, senior vice president and chief human resources officer. “Our hybrid work schedule provides for three days in the office … and employees can choose if they’d like to work from home or at the office on Thursday and Fridays.”
predates the Spanish-American War and the sinking of the Titanic. The supply chain giant got its start in 1892, by George Scoular, as Scoular Grain & Lumber Co. of Superior, Nebraska. Through the years, the company has acquired several terminal and country elevators, expanded its footprint across the country and around the globe, shifted to merchandising and distribution, entered into the feed ingredients and byproducts marketing space, and established itself as an early adopter of clean label solutions by beginning to trade identity-preserved grain and soybeans, and receiving its organic certification in 1994.
Eickhoff continued: “Having all of us together on Mondays through Wednesdays enables all the benefits of working side by side. The back part of the week allows for personal flexibility, with technology enabling productive virtual offices and teamwork.”
The creation of new business units in food and pet food ingredients, the purchase of a river terminal and entrance into the renewable fuels market, the expansion of its global capabilities in special crops, pulses and associated specialty food ingredients would follow between 1998 to 2015. More recent notables include the launch of Petsource in 2019, a strategic focus on Asia-Pacific with new leadership in the region (also in 2019) and the launch of Roger in 2020. Described by Scoular as an independent technology company that provides digital tools to shippers and carriers in the dry bulk truck freight industry, Roger is reportedly the brainchild of several major agricultural forces partnering with Scoular.
Now a $6 billion employee-owned organization with self-described “solutions for customers at every step in the agricultural supply chain,” Scoular’s history

the expertise of local partners Sampson Construction, Ervin & Smith, and Sheppard’s Business Interiors. For instance, the new office features a 35-foot backlit wall showcasing George Scoular and growth and innovation over time. “We started to evaluate options for a new global headquarters in February 2020,” Chief Financial Officer Andy Kenny recalled. “That endeavor was prompted by our company strategy, specifically two of our five strategic pillars: collaborating to drive stakeholder value and evolving our culture.” Additionally, Kenny noted, Scoular’s strategy aspires to achieve double-digit growth each year resulting in increased talent needs, particularly in Omaha. This led to the need for a new and expanded space to accommodate such growth. A nod to its engagement with employees in the design of the new and expanded space, Eickhoff said they heard four key things from employees about what they wanted in the headquarters: a welcoming and collaborative environment, open and visually-connected surroundings, incorporation of the latest in smart technologies, and an embrace of the Scoular heritage and brand. Chief Executive Officer Paul Maass also highlighted how Scoular employees demonstrated inclusion, collaboration, and perseverance in the planning of its new headquarters space.
100% remote work. Creating a great common space enables those things, making a difference in employees’ work satisfaction and having a direct impact on the bottom line.”
A robust future Its record performance and future growth plans have driven the need for new employees, and Eickhoff said Scoular’s hiring outlook continues to increase with growth. “At Petsource by Scoular, an independently-operated subsidiary headquartered in Seward, Nebraska, we recently announced a $75 million expansion and investment in Nebraska,” she said. “With this, Petsource is expecting to hire an additional 80 employees. “Across Scoular,” Eickhoff continued, “over the past six months, we have increased our staff by over 10% and we anticipate continued hiring in the near- and longerterm future.” Going forward, Kenny said, though Scoular is not in a position to predict the outcome of the fiscal year, the organization is half-way through FY22 (ending in May), and has exceeded last year’s midpoint annual sales milestone.
“I am so proud of not only what we’ve all accomplished throughout our 100-plus-year legacy,” he said. “But, especially during the significant disruption of the pandemic.” Maass largely referenced how the building represents a commitment to invest back in the organization. “It’s important to provide a high-performance, collaborative and flexible space where everyone feels included and can do their best work,” he said. “I’m also proud that Scoular continues to call Omaha home and that we’ve made this investment in our community.” Maass continued: “Scoular, like other inspirational business leaders in Omaha, works passionately and tirelessly to make Omaha a vibrant place to work and live.” When asked about words of wisdom for those readers who are considering reinvestments in spaces to support existing and future talent, Eickhoff said “smart employers can’t go wrong investing in their people.” “Hybrid work environments are here to stay, and they mix the best of both worlds,” she said. “The pandemic taught us to think creatively and innovatively in how we work, including regular work from home. There’s also huge benefit in face-to-face collaboration, building relationships, and culture creation that would be lost in

“Our industry is going through a dynamic time and the growth strategy we established has guided us,” he explained. “Our strength comes from our strategy and our talent, which has resulted in achieving strong financial results to date.” When asked about key takeaways, Eickhoff emphasized the value Scoular places on its employees; for instance, while building its new space, significant resources were allocated to ensure health and safety. “We significantly upgraded the HVAC system, which is equipped with hospital quality filtration, which includes ultraviolet light in the ductwork,” she said. “Scoular values our employees and prioritizes their health and well-being.” Chief Legal and External Affairs Officer Megan Belcher also emphasized how the new space has provided the team “with a new and expanded opportunity to bring Scoular’s refreshed brand to live — whether it be in the distinct décor, or the large mobile version of our logo hanging in the lobby.” She also revisited Scoular’s partnerships, referencing both Alley Poyner Macchietto and digital marketing agency Ervin & Smith.
She explained that the foundation leverages a set of key guiding principles to drive its giving decisions.
“We were very deliberate to partner with other strong Omaha community leaders,” she said, “bringing that refreshed brand to our space. And we think their support of our historic legacy has paid fabulous returns, bringing the refreshed face of the strong Scoular brand to life in our employees’ workspace.”
“And we have also set goals around our community engagement through our sustainability program,” Belcher said. “In Omaha, our employees and the Foundation have strong partnerships with the Food Bank for the Heartland, inCommon, the Women’s Center for Advancement and United Way of the Midlands.”
Belcher also highlighted another dimension to the organization, The Scoular Foundation, which was reportedly established in 1983 in direct response to its founders’ commitment to support the communities its employees and customers call their home and/or workplace.
Belcher also noted that, in 2021, Scoular established a nonprofit board development program for its senior leaders, officers and other interested leadership which, she said, “is paying great dividends.”
“Scoular has a deep commitment to investing in the communities where our employees live and work, around the world,” she said. “We make that investment through the time, treasure, and talent of our employees, our company leadership, and through The Scoular Foundation.”
She referred to Scoular’s engagement with nonprofits and around the country. “We look forward to expanding and strengthening our strategic community relationships in 2022,” she said, “and continuing to achieve against our related sustainability measures.”

INDUSTRY LEADERS WORK TO MEET PRESSING CHALLENGES BY MICHELLE LEACH
RICHARD J. BAIER
PRESIDENT AND CEO, NEBRASKA BANKERS ASSOCIATION
Widespread societal shifts are driving innovations to address needs that were well-established long before volatility and uncertainty characterized day-to-day lives – needs only underscored during challenging moments. State and local banking, transportation, education, nonprofit and business leadership are embodying the forward-thinking that supports stronger industries and

communities in 2022 and beyond. “Clearly, COVID has forced all businesses to adapt and engrain more flexibility into their company cultures and operations,” said Richard J. Baier, president and CEO with the Nebraska Bankers Association. “Businesses are using these pandemic lessons to better meet the needs of their customers.” Baier noted statewide gains in successful entrepreneurial ventures and small startups

(with record levels of venture capital investments), as well as ag’s continued performance through the pandemic. “The main challenges going forward include finding and retaining a skilled workforce and ensuring that all residents benefit from Nebraska’s strong economy,” he said. On any given day, Baier said there are 500-plus bank job openings in the state. The

industry is responding with “creativity and technology” – interactive teller machines to enhanced digital banking platforms. In fact, as banks have pivoted from keeping customers afloat (with the likes of the Paycheck Protection Program), there is a renewed focus on increasing one’s personal savings, planning, and financial education opportunities. “Inflationary impacts, coupled with continued supply chain challenges, will clearly be important for Nebraska businesses to keep in their sights,” he said. Baier expects continued M&A activity to decrease the number of charters in the state. “But the number of local bank branches and bank employment should remain steady,” he said. Unprecedented low interest rates are limiting future profit potential, Baier said, while “historically-elevated” levels of deposits are coupled with constrained loan growth. Fraudulent activity has also escalated to new levels. “Nebraska banks are ramping up customer protections and fraud detection efforts,” he said. The NBA’s public policy and advocacy team is responding to these and other challenges; for instance, Baier isolated its involvement with crafting new digital asset legislation – allowing banks and consumers to more easily and securely enter the cryptocurrency space. Its education department has moved

some of the 40-plus training programs to the virtual environment, while Baier said the NBA is working proactively with members to address workforce shortages (i.e., internship placements, financial literacy training in schools).
Moving Transportation Access Forward
The Greater Omaha Chamber’s Stephen Osberg heads up ConnectGO, a partnership with the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency, Metro Smart Cities and Metro Transit to build a new, forward-looking transportation plan. “Our goal is to reexamine our transportation system to make sure it’s meeting our region’s greatest needs now and into the future,” said Osberg, director of transportation and urban development. Osberg said ConnectGO’s outreach and research resulted in four main goals, starting with equitable access to opportunity. “Everyone should be able to access the goods and services they need, especially employment, education, food or health care,” he said. Turning to goal No. 2, having lifestyle options that make the metro an attractive place to attract and retain talent. Its third objective of economic growth is a nod to transportation as the vehicle to support more efficient freight movement and real estate development. Lastly, stewardship of the system was isolated to adequately maintain current infrastructure and ensure future maintenance-oriented investments. Osberg said its transportation strategy document is setting forth the long-term vision for a more walkable Omaha in the coming decades. In early January, he said ConnectGO is setting the stage for large-scale implementation with the creation of a Regional Transit Authority; $0 Metro Transit fares for K-12 students; a package of projects to be submitted for federal funding; a forthcoming Omaha bicycle and pedestrian plan with Metro Transit’s MetroNEXT strategy; employer-based alternatives to driving programs; and a protected bikeway along Harney Street in partnership with Metro Smart Cities, Bike Walk Nebraska and Omaha by Design. Moving into its third year this summer, ConnectGO is weighing in on proposed
zoning changes to complement ORBT’s transit service, and conversations around public health and racial equality to address long standing inequities remain its central motivation. Notably, Osberg said pockets of the metro have significantly higher unemployment rates (up to 16%) than the region as a whole. These census tracts have greater concentrations of black or Latinx people. Osberg said disparities surfaced repeatedly during outreach, a portion of which is explained by lack of access to vehicles – limiting access to employment, health care and education. “We need to do better in providing high quality options to driving,” he said Business competition used to be centered around natural resources. Now, competition is about talent. And Osberg said people around the country are increasingly seeking places where it’s easier to move via transit, bike, or walking. “Until we can meet that need, we risk missing out on talent,” he stated.
Accelerating Educational Access
Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Sacha Kopp, Ph.D., summed up the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s mission as “one of access.” “Online learning creates an avenue
for so many people in the greater Omaha community, region, state and even across the country to access higher education at UNO while also tending to other responsibilities in their life – their families, local communities and jobs,” he said. Kopp attributes UNO’s success over the past 20-plus years in this space to focusing on the right things: quality, access, flexibility and affordability. “We have grown online in a way that complements and extends our on-campus tradition and reputation,” he said. The university is considering new and enhanced ways to support students and workforce development; for instance, by partnering local corporations to offer employees continuing education, college or advanced degrees. “Thus far, nine corporations, including several of the area’s largest employers and Fortune 500 companies, have made this resource available to their employees,” Kopp stated in early January. “Approximately 98% of the courses have reached these employees, thanks to online learning.” As an example of UNO’s growth in online learning, its first program in public administration started in the late 1990s and now spans 12 and 7 undergraduate and graduate programs, respectively. “But online is also part of the fabric of
the UNO campus, with the vast majority of students taking at least one online class before they graduate,” he said. The “workplace of the future” requires strong digital competencies. So, Kopp said, their experience at UNO builds transferrable skills for careers. There is balance, which accounts for how students crave campus life after a year of remote learning, while they also enjoy the flexibility of online courses. Assistant Vice Chancellor for Curriculum and Programs Sarah Edwards, Ph.D., also harkened back to UNO’s established infrastructure for digital learning, mix of academic technology, core online coursework, and faculty experienced with technology well before 2020. “Our biggest need as the pandemic began was to scale our effective practices to all faculty and students,” she said, “and make resources and support available 24/7.” New tools weren’t necessary to navigate this shift; rather, she said they extended efforts by expanding the likes of laptop and MiFi portable internet device checkout programs. “More of our students had the technology they needed readily available to them,” Edwards said. Working through the third academic year impacted by the pandemic, UNO is exploring ways to support students with economic,

personal, and public health stressors; for instance, Edwards referenced how digital learning is offering workshops to faculty and staff where best practices. Also, she said much UNO’s professional development and training at present focuses on “humanizing the digital environment” — creating meaningful connections through digital tools. “Our goal at UNO is to have a highly engaging, robust digital learning environment where students feel extremely supported as they pursue their academic goals,” she said. More academic programs are moving into online formats (in addition to campus offerings), including high-demand areas of
cybersecurity, business, IT and social work. Chancellor Joanne Li is excited about UNO’s partnership with Open Educational Resources, which offers free or reduced-cost digital course materials in lieu of standard textbooks, as she said the costs of textbooks have gotten so high that many students “can no longer afford to purchase them.” “By working with instructors to adopt OER and integrate it right into the learning management system, we save students money but also increase their ability to be successful,” she said. In all, OER and first day access eBooks have saved UNO students $2.2 million over

the past few years. To prioritize workforce development, Li said UNO is creating “microcredentials” and high-demand certificate areas critical to the metro economy to enhance skill sets in less time than traditional undergraduate and grad programs. Reportedly, launches are planned in entrepreneurship, leadership, and equity and inclusion.
Supporting Communitywide Needs
The Omaha Community Foundation highlighted grassroots grant programs to support those corners of the region faced with persistent needs, and encouraged nonprofits and neighborhood groups to apply for this year’s Community Interest, resident-led funds: African American Unity Fund, Equality Fund for LGBTQIA2S+, Futuro Latino Fund, Omaha Neighborhood Grants and the Refugee Community Grant Fund. Grants valued at $822,000 were awarded to 76 nonprofits and neighborhood groups last year. Program Manager Katrina Adams said resident-led programs give everyday people opportunities to be decisionmakers about services and activities in their neighborhoods. “They are truly focused on building up the applicant organizations,” Adams said. “So, they can be more competitive with other potential donors and funders.” Strategic investments are designed to elevate access and equity, and committees that lead the grant process include residents who come from or identify with the population being served. They review proposals and decide the projects to fund based off of firsthand experience. OCF is also partnering with the city of Omaha to distribute $10 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to reportedly provide enhancements to existing programs in historically-challenged areas of crisis intervention, violence prevention and

workforce development. These challenges have been compounded by the pandemic and recession. Omaha’s Community Grant Program focuses on Qualified Census Tracts where 50% or more households have incomes lower than 60% of the Area Median Gross Income (or poverty rates of 25% or greater). CIF and ARPA application windows close March 1 and April 1, respectively.
Big Picture Economic, Workforce Needs
“We spend a lot of time with our donors and members,” said Greater Omaha Chamber SVP of Economic Development Todd Johnson. “They want to talk about three things: workforce development, workforce development and workforce development. It is the most critical opportunity that we have in our community.” The Chamber’s efforts are embodied, partly, by internship partnership with the likes of Aksarben Foundation and universities. “Everybody is talking about internships and how to create an environment where juniors and seniors in high school have an opportunity for workforce experience,” he said. “We know anecdotally and qualitatively that [internships] have a direct correlation to attraction and retention.” Omaha’s ecosystem attracts talent from away, and Johnson said individuals stay, because they see economic opportunity locally. “They don’t necessarily stay with the companies that created the internship, but with the overall business community,” he said. “We have an important coalition with chambers from across the state. So, everybody is rowing in unison and creating exponentially more internships opportunities than we have today.” Senior Director of workforce Development Ana Lopez Shalla indicated the Chamber and its partners are looking at the quality of internships, diving deep

into pain points that have characterized an old concept, and past barriers to scaling such programs. “We are having those conversations now,” she said. “Some [challenges] are logistical … or issues with support, best practices and diversity.” The key to getting outsiders excited about Nebraska and Omaha, Johnson said, are experiences that transcend signature events (like the CWS). “There is a tremendous amount of research and data around having an experience in addition to having a relationship,” he said; for instance, strategies may involve leveraging individuals who grew up here, or local young professionals to re-engage with college roommates. Shalla said the focus is on the “largest
outmigration” (18- to 35-year-olds). Models should be flexible enough to account for “every facet and every corner of the workforce.” Johnson added that great membercompanies have remote interns who may not currently have to move. But can “still be impactful and productive from wherever they reside.” “There is a pretty massive disruption in the workforce that doesn’t just apply to internships,” he said. “I know a number of folks who live in West O and work for larger companies in California. They benefit from the cost of living and quality of life here. But they’re currently employed elsewhere around the world. That’s an opportunity for those folks to get plugged in to some local companies.”
Shalla spoke at greater length to Workforce Council efforts. A targeted Chamber council, it spans a strategist (“think tank”) arm to refine ideas, and a champion arm to amplify them. “Workforce development is a noisy space,” she said. “It’s even noisier now, because tens of millions of dollars are being pumped into it. So, we’re getting folks coalesced around strategies and doing a bunch of little things with one-off groups in a moment like this. To feed every bit of talent into a system in a reliable way requires engaging in common, scalable workforce strategies.” At the time of this writing, a bill was being introduced to the Nebraska legislature to reportedly provide $50 million to fund internship program staff, related
Page 11 • January 28, 2022
reimbursements (such as housing), and flexible, responsive entities and programs themselves. Aside from the considerable discussions around internships, Shalla noted in the second half of the year the Workforce Council is looking at hidden talent pools and job sharing. Underutilized talent pools include caregivers, formerly incarcerated, differently-abled and military veterans. Lastly, Shalla highlighted “clearing pathways” to increase diversity, equity and inclusion; for instance, supporting companies’ leadership development efforts. This “moment,” she said, calls for active engagement, rather than passivity. “In the past, an employer might post a job and get 20 applicants for it and only half were qualified,” she said. “There wasn’t an incentive to play a role in pipeline development.”

SCHILLINGBRIDGE CORK & TAP HOUSE After eyeing several options for a second location, SchillingBridge Cork & Tap House has had to hit pause. The restaurant, which opened in Lincoln’s Fallbrook development on the northwest edge of the city in 2014, has been battling the current talent crisis. The Cork & Tap has about 20 employees, but like many restaurants it is short-staffed. “Everyone’s feeling it,” President Kelly Bletscher said. “We decided to stay closed on Monday and Tuesday, which we started during the pandemic. We want to take care of the staff we have and make sure they have a solid two days off to spend with their families and aren’t overworked or stressed.” Last year The Cork & Tap received a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which helped the firm give raises to its staff.
True Scratch Kitchen Almost everything on SchillingBridge’s menu is made in-house. “We cook with an infused wine and beer in almost all of our menu items,” Bletscher said. “French fries are the exception. We have a passion
for creating higher-end comfort foods, infusing them with beer and wine. Our beer cheese is one of our most popular things. We have beer bread and caramel beer bread pudding. We make our own caramel sauce with our Scottish ales.” All of the pork is farm-to-table. Bletscher and her husband, Mitch, live on a farm near Falls City where they raise purebred Berkshire hogs. The hogs are quartered and transported to the restaurant where they are broken down. “You can choose whether you want pork or beef on any of our burgers,” Bletscher said. “One of our most popular appetizers is drunken nachos. We make our own tortilla chips, then top them with either brisket or pulled pork, beer cheese, and our beer barbeque sauce.” The Cork & Tap is a spinoff and expansion of SchillingBridge Winery and Microbrewery in Pawnee City, which Bletscher’s parents, Mike and Sharon Schilliing, opened in 2005. “We planted a huge garden at the winery and were able to bring up a lot of fresh vegetables [to the restaurant] and that really decreased our cost for food and also created a better product,” Bletscher said.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?R
40 under 40 ITZEL LOPEZ, VICE PRESIDENT OF ADVANCEMENT AND COMMUNITY, AIM INSTITUTE
AIMing High
ITZEL LOPEZ HELPS FUND AIM’S MISSION Itzel Lopez is living proof that it doesn’t matter where you start in a career, it’s what you do from there that counts. Joining the AIM Institute in 2014 in an entry-level role, she’s enjoyed nearly one promotion a year since. Today, the 2013 40 Under 40 honoree heads the nonprofit’s fundraising efforts as vice president of advancement and community relations, a role she was promoted into last year. “In my role as the lead fundraiser, my work is to cultivate relationships with local funders to secure sponsorship and membership support for our organization,” she said. “Basically, I’m responsible for all the revenue and maintaining the revenue at our organization. I’m also responsible for the majority of the revenue outside of federal grants.” Lopez, who was born and raised in Mexico until the age of 12, said she developed her sales chops by watching her family while growing up. “My parents were entrepreneurs, and so I think I have an entrepreneurial spirit just by nature,” she said. “I grew up in an environment where entrepreneurship was very instilled in our
childhood because my entire family, both on my mom and my dad’s side back in Mexico, they all were business owners. “So, I was always surrounded by business and when I was young, I saw my dad making deals. I know for sure that impacted my life and inspired me. Donations are not sales, so in general I think it’s not a sales process, it’s more of a relationship process. And I think people trust me and trust our organization to be good stewards of their financial support. When you have a good mission and when you have a good person representing that, those go hand in hand.”
Philanthropic Message Even if she doesn’t see soliciting donors as the same thing as sales, Lopez admitted there is competition for donor dollars, given the number of worthy causes that exist in the community. She said getting AIM’s share of philanthropic funding takes consistent, powerful messaging. “In Omaha alone, we have over 2,000 tech jobs that go unfilled every year,” she said. “When someone joins the tech workforce, for every one

software developer there are five new jobs added in our community. So, this shortage will just continue to increase even though technology careers are stable, rewarding career opportunities. “Despite this shortage, our existing tech workforce is currently very white and male-dominated. There is not enough access to quality technology education for people of color and females, honestly. Females only make up about 20% of the tech workforce and only 10% of that are females of color.” On this latter point, Lopez is particularly well-versed, relating her own journey from undocumented immigrant to an American success story. She said using that experience to illustrate how others can be helped by AIM’s mission is a story worth telling. “When we arrived, we lived in a basement that was overpriced, over $900 rent and that was like, 20 plus years ago, in not the best living condition,” she said. “So, I understand what the journey is of someone who has lived in poverty, who has seen their parents work two jobs and still not make a living. “AIM’s mission is to provide access to free technology education that would not otherwise be available for this population. Once people get into this field, it’s really a good job opportunity because it’s stable, and it’s in high demand in our community. As a person of color who was once undocumented, I see how an organization like AIM can literally impact someone’s life and end the cycle of poverty.”
Going the Extra Mile Marcos Mora, executive director for Cinco de Mayo Omaha, has known Lopez for nearly 20 years. He said her unique combination of determination and personability are what makes her effective in her role. “I think the magic thing about her is that people like her. She’s just one of those likable persons,” he said. “She carries herself well, she’s professional. She’s very likable and that makes it easy when you’re networking. People just gravitate towards her because she is such a great person. “The other thing is she’s just driven. She’s a hard worker and has really strong work values and ethics. You don’t always see people who want to go the extra mile, but she’ll give you 110%. Not many people want to do that these days but she does.” During her rapid rise through the AIM organization, Lopez has had a chance to collaborate on some noteworthy projects. She points to the group’s coding academy for high schoolers as a point of particular pride. “Two years ago, we launched a code academy partnership with Omaha South High School. Since then, we have graduated over 20 students and have assisted them into getting into higher education and their first job in tech,” she said. “It’s a real passion program for me, as a graduate from South High who wasn’t exposed to this and also knowing that South High has the largest diverse population in the whole district. It’s a great feeling to see how your work to end poverty in those families is actually happening.”

FORMER MENTEES SHARE THE BENEFIT OF MENTORSHIP BY DWAIN HEBDA
LADAZJA IVORY PARTICIPATING IN AMERICORPS SERVICE
Few volunteer activities provide as many positive payoffs than adults mentoring children and youth, a fact borne out by study after study. But what does it actually look like in real-life terms to have the attention and participation of an adult mentor? Midlands Business Journal interviewed two former mentees to discover firsthand how their relationship with an adult mentor helped set their feet on a path for success in life.
Ladazja Ivory, 25
It takes a special kind of person to face a room full of 9th- and 10th-graders on a daily basis, talking about academic success and life skills. Ladazja Ivory, program coordinator with Partnership 4 Kids, who leads an afterschool program at Omaha South High School, is one such person.
One reason she’s so at-home here is she knows what many of these kids are going through and she knows the impact that a positive adult influence can have. In fact, she was at this age when she was paired with her mentor, Teresa Sullivan, also through Partnership 4 Kids, a relationship that’s stayed intact to the present day. “Teresa is a lovely lady; I still talk to her,” Ivory said. “She’s always been kind of like a mother figure. She’s been awesome.” Ivory was already a good student and had a loving, supportive family, but Sullivan quickly found a key niche in her life nonetheless. “I am the oldest of three kids and I didn’t have guidance as far as going to college because I am a first-generation college student,” she said. “Once I got to sophomore year and they were talking about a mentor, I’m like, ‘Okay, it’s an

actual adult. They’re going to give me those tools to succeed in the future and give me that extra guidance.’ “[Teresa] helped me a lot on the college side of things because at the time, she had a daughter who was actually starting her journey into college.” The impact was so profound, it inspired Ivory to return to Partnership 4 Kids as a professional to pass along the same kind of positive influence that was given to her. Many of the kids in her class will seek her out for advice or to talk through something one-on-one and she gets to model the behavior demonstrated by her own mentor. “I would tell anyone considering mentoring to just think about the possibilities,” she said. “You can honestly be the one person to change someone’s life. There are so many kids out there who don’t have a good support system. So many kids just need that little extra push and one person can honestly do it.”
Jammal Hunter, 18
Three years ago, Jammal Hunter felt the absence of a positive male role model in his life. Connecting with 100 Black Men, he found the one-on-one guidance and support that made all the difference in navigating the pressures and challenges of high school. “I was, like, 15 or 16 at the time,” he said. “I was not troubled, but didn’t have that father figure I was looking for. My mom found 100 Black Men and she signed me up for it. I got matched with my mentor, Marcus [Bell].” Hunter said after a breaking-in period, he came to rely on Bell, who’s executive director of the 100 Black Men organization. “We found out we had a lot in common,” Hunter said. “He graduated from the same school. He was like a father, like a brother, and he taught me what to do, what not to do. We just kind of opened up to each other as time went on.” Hunter said the two connected through various events the organization held as well as informal conversations many youths take for granted.
“We got to hang out usually once a week,” he said. “He also had my phone number to where we could hang out outside of that. We would go get my hair cut or go to the mall or go to the movies or stuff like that.” Conversations also ran the gamut, from direct help with homework or sports coaching to general conversations about life and confidence. “Just talking to me about football or coming to my games or saying, ‘I’m proud of you,’” Hunter said. “It’s a different feeling than hearing it from your mom. It’s just a way different level of communication, you know what I’m saying?” Hunter urged adults to get involved in mentoring, saying most don’t know the substantial impact they can have just by showing up. “It’s not what you can bring to the table, it’s going to be your presence,” he said. “Just be yourself. Treat it like you’re making a new friend, but a friend where you’re also trying to be that father figuretype person. Just give it time and get to know each other.”

The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document to the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment options are cash or check. 3. Deadline is noon on Tuesday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5. You will receive a paid invoice copy the first week it runs.
