COVER story CHRIS SUND, PRESIDENT AND COO OF UNITI MED.
Uniti Med FOCUS ON EMPLOYEES LEADS TO IMPRESSIVE GROWTH When Chris Sund joined the Uniti Med leadership in 2022 the fledgling health care staffing firm was only a year old. His very first hire, and No. 1 priority, was a director of culture. “People thought I was nuts. Like, what about HR and compliance and finance?” said Sund, who became president in April 2023. The decision has paid off. Since then the company has grown from around 20 support staff employees to 89. “Even more important is that we’ve increased our traveler count to where it is today, over 500% or so of revenue,” Sund said. “[In 2021] we had around 60 travelers. We have north of 300 right now.” The company has been recognized with a slew of awards for its culture, both for its support staff and health care workers, including Staffing Industry Analysts’ 2023 Best Staffing Firms to Work For, and ClearlyRated’s 2023 Best of Staffing Talent Award. Locally, Uniti Med was named by Baird Holm as a 2023 Best Place to Work in Omaha. The awards, administered and analyzed by Quantum Workplace, are determined using employee surveys from applying companies.
Ninety-five employees from Uniti Med participated in the study in 2023, and the results indicated that 97% of employees felt it was a great place to work. According to the Great Places to Work 2021 Global Employee Engagement Study, on average only 57% of employees at U.S.-based companies say their company is a great place to work.
Culture: It’s Personal
At the core of Uniti Med’s culture is a simple philosophy: keep it personal. “It’s taking the time to realize that we’re people, first,” Sund said. That means asking employees what they value. For Nursing Client Manager Casey French, it was important to have time off to accompany his wife during doctor visits. “My wife and I had to go through IVF to grow our family, which meant a lot of appointments throughout the week for a few months,” French said. “When I asked to take time off to be at the appointments with my

Adding those layers and continuing to grow within our company, which in turn grows new career opportunities. CHRIS SUND, PRESIDENT & COO, UNITI MED
wife, they didn’t bat an eye and immediately told me to be there for my family. My work would be covered while I was away.” Beyond being given time off, he said co-workers and team members followed up, offering support and help where they could. “Life can throw a lot of curveballs your way, and Uniti has a way of stepping up when someone needs help,” French said. “Co-workers and managers stepping in to assist, without skipping a beat, is something I haven’t experienced before.” For Benefits Specialist David Bontz it’s the investment in his professional development, as well as his mental and physical health. “Such as providing a gym, having multiple wellness programs, making mental health coverage a priority in our benefits,” he said. “They even paid for personal development coaching which really helped me understand myself and utilize my strengths more effectively.”
The Chik-Fil-A of Staffing
As a company, Sund said that what Uniti Med does isn’t particularly unique, but, where it excels is the employee and client experience. He often uses the analogy of chicken nuggets from three chains: Burger King, McDonald’s, and Chick-fil-A. In the analogy, the Burger King model relies on low overhead to bring the customer an almost unbeatable price. “They’ll do whatever they can to minimize their overhead to pay the traveler more,” he said. McDonald’s, while slightly more expensive, has figured out how to utilize technology. In the analogy, those companies have replaced recruiters with technology. “Now, here’s the issue. If something goes wrong, you don’t know who to call,” he said. “There’s nothing wrong with that model; a lot of people love that experience. “I compare us to Chick-fil-A. For the same chicken nuggets you’re probably going to pay more, but we feel it’s a good quality.” The quality is in the level of support each traveling health care provider receives. From helping nurses find a home away from home on assignment to walking them through the required certifications in each state, the support team is there.
The same is true for the facilities Uniti Med employees are contracted to. For example, if a Uniti Med travel nurse is late to their shift consistently the facility can call Uniti Med and Uniti Med will work with the nurse to resolve the issue. Another example could be a missed paycheck.
Needed But Not Desired
Often, Uniti Med works with rural facilities that desperately need health care professionals in their communities. “That’s probably the hardest thing because when people think of travel nursing they want to go somewhere cool,” he said. The silver lining is that often those popular areas aren’t in immediate need of assistance. Or, in some cases, licensure might require a longer timeframe. This allows Uniti Med to suggest a rural hospital until a space opens up. “These are good places,” Sund said. “So many small town hospitals, everyone knows each other’s names and when you walk in they thank you for joining the team because they need you.” In rural areas, another factor is housing. Nationally, affordable housing is at a deficit and rural areas often don’t have short-term rentals available. This is another space where Uniti Med steps in to help its travelers. “We’ve brokered deals with a lot of the hotels to get better rates because we want to make it as affordable as possible,” Sund said. “In rural areas, we might need to call the hospitals and ask if they know who is renting in town. We might have to call a bank and ask if they know renters that aren’t advertising.” Housing, rightfully so, is a major stress point. As such, Sund said he could see Uniti Med building out a department dedicated to finding and maintaining housing contracts for travelers. “Adding those layers and continuing to grow within our company, which in turn grows new career opportunities,” he said. Soon, statistics show that the aging population will drive demand, dictating a need for more long-term care nurses as well as general hospital nurses. “We still have a long path to go in health care staffing,” Sund said.

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in financial planning may leave investors wondering how it will impact the wealth management industry. “The introduction of AI is in its introductory phases in the framework of software for planning projections, modeling for hierarchy of savings or where to save or pay down debt, and modeling for long-term planning goals,” said Ryan Swartz, partner, and managing director at Creative Planning. “There are other advancements in portfolio and investment management and trading software, which can take advantage of scale and trends while providing more customized outcomes for investors.” But as wealth advisers suggest, it’s not going to replace human interactions anytime soon.
However, Andrew Hunt, partner at Hiley Hunt Wealth Management, said AI may help wealth managers serve more clients. “A proactive financial planner and proactive wealth manager can serve 100, maybe 150, households to really anticipate those client needs,” he said. “After that, you just run out of capacity to serve people if you’re doing a good job. What AI is going to do is it’s going to increase the capacity of a good wealth manager to be able to serve more clients at the margin.” Consider when Turbo Tax emerged in the mid-2000s, he said. Rather than disrupting the industry, it helped tax preparers serve more complex clients.

Prepare For Uncertainty
There are plenty of issues that will likely dominate the financial headlines in 2024. Unrest in Ukraine and the Middle East, the U.S. presidential election, and thorny questions about the nation’s economic health are primary among them. “No one knows the future, but there is still significant economic uncertainty,” said Matt Munyon, retirement plan administrator at Swartzbaugh Farber. “Inflation is lowering but still elevated, there is a possible recession and there seems to be an increasing amount of geo-political uncertainty by the day.” Munyon suggested making sure an emergency fund is set up. Consider household expenses, spending habits, and personal budgets. “Build up a short-term savings account that is easily accessible and has between three to six months of living expenses in it,” he said. Starting slow and building that fund will help shield against the unexpected. CONTINUED

Are You Saving Enough?
David Stevens, founder of Stevens Capital Partners, said the new year is the ideal time for savers at every stage of life to examine their strategies for retirement. “The first thing I advise my clients to review from the previous year is their cashflow worksheet. How much did they spend and how much was essential versus nonessential spending,” he said. Next, he has clients look at their dividends and interest, followed by how the portfolio grew and appreciated. Finally, how tax-efficient were they? “One of the best practices when entering a new year is to frontload any contributions to your accounts,” he said. “Many believe that they should spread contributions out over the course of the year, but you can actually contribute a larger deferral earlier in the year. “Over time that can create a time value advantage as more compounding of assets can occur over many years. This would apply to gifts or even contributions to education accounts.”
Additionally, consider planning for taxes by “adjusting withholdings or paying estimated taxes.” “Finally, review your annual spending budgets and add the difference in savings to automated savings,” he said. “All of these practices can make a substantive difference over the long run.”
Remain Disciplined
At the same time, investors and savers shouldn’t make changes simply for the sake of making them. A long-term approach means minimizing volatility and Swartz advised against substantially altering a strategy just because the year turned over or due to prolonged challenges in the market, such as high inflation. “Generally, investors should be taking the long-term approach with investing and many of the best times to invest historically have been during the most unnerving,” he said. “To that extent, long-term investors can look at setbacks and economic uncertainty CONTINUED

as opportunities for the future.” Hunt said not only should investors not panic in challenging times, but they should maintain discipline in times of prosperity and opportunity, following the guidance of their financial adviser. “With the market reaching all-time highs on January 19, we get a lot of questions from people about, what does that mean? Should I reallocate my investments?” he said. “What I like to remind people of is history; when we go back and look at what happens to the S&P 500 after a bear market, what we see when we study this back to the 1950s is the go-forward returns, with just a few exceptions, are overwhelmingly robust.” The exceptions? The period directly after the dot.com crash, which was propelled by September 11, and the oil crisis in the
1970s. “Panicking rarely leads to good decision-making,” Munyon said. “Don’t abandon your portfolio’s diversification to chase short-term performance, no matter how tempting it can be. He said just because an asset class performed well one year, doesn’t guarantee it will perform well the following year. “Over time, diversification has been proven to reduce a portfolio’s overall volatility swings while increasing return potential,” Munyon said. “A diversified portfolio can help ensure access to better-performing asset classes while limiting exposure to those which are underperforming. Don’t abandon your long-term focus.” For example, savers who have steadily contributed to fixedincome, low-risk investments.

WILL I HAVE ENOUGH? “For the last decade, savers have really been penalized for owning bonds or fixed-income instruments,” Hunt said. “Now, for the first time, due to all the pain of 2022 and rising interest rates, savers are getting paid for the safe portion of their portfolio. “That shouldn’t be ignored, especially for folks in retirement or approaching retirement. If you can get a nice yield off your lowerrisk, fixed-income investments, that’s going to really change the game for folks. All of a sudden, a very diversified, modest portfolio is going to get a real yield.”

NONPROFITS 100 BLACK MEN OF OMAHA EMPHASIZES NURTURING FUTURE LEADERS. (COURTESY OF MENTOR NEBRASKA)
The Power of Mentors NEBRASKA MENTORING MONTH SHINES LIGHT ON IMPACT This time of year Nebraska organizations are bringing awareness to the benefits of mentoring. From National Mentoring Month in January to Nebraska Mentoring Month in February, business leaders are finding value in mentoring to attract and retain employees. In addition to mentoring on a professional level, local nonprofits recently were awarded nearly $5 million in annual grants, to be used toward the funding of programs to improve reading skills in elementary students.
Lasting Impact
According to MENTOR Nebraska, 74% of adults who were mentored as children said their mentor contributed significantly to their success later in life. But mentorship isn’t just about guidance, as Susie Owens, director of strategic partnerships at MENTOR Nebraska puts it.
“It’s the cornerstone of employee retention and fosters lasting professional relationships,” she said. Owens cited a Deloitte survey, whereby millennial employees with mentors were twice as likely to stay with their employer for five-plus years (68% versus 32%). “Employers that want to attract and retain talent are missing a big opportunity if they don’t tap into the power of mentoring,” she said.
Approach Matters
Christopher McCroy, executive director of partnering organization, 100 Black Men of Omaha, also cited 2022 research from Julia Freeland Fisher of the Clayton Christensen Institute, which noted how positive and diverse relationships in young lives can “buffer risk, boost academic performance, and ultimately expand professional opportunities.”

He said the biggest developments in mentoring include a “holistic, multi-generational” support angle. “We acknowledge the importance of family engagement and we work to keep caregivers up-to-date on the progress of mentees; however, we are also working to provide more wrap-around support for the youth we serve and their families by connecting them to support in the community,” McCroy said. For instance, he highlighted engagement events, “Real Talk with The 100 – Parent’s Edition,” covering education planning, and health and wellness topics. Candias (Candi) Jones, executive director of fellow certified partner, Girls Inc. of Omaha, highlighted mentoring’s expansion beyond professional development to emotional health and wellbeing elements. “Now, we see more mentees, especially children and young adults, seeking more support in not just addressing their professional skills, but also their personal qualities, values, and overall character,” she said. Girls Inc. is leaning into this by offering more holistic development within mentor/mentee pairings, encouraging mentors to help mentees think about their sense of purpose and talk openly about their setbacks. Lisa Buckentine, president of the Junior League of Omaha, highlighted how the organization has seen annual retention rates increase for members participating in its mentorship program – at times as high as 96%. “During COVID we pivoted our mentor-mentee meetings and now allow for check-ins via Zoom and encourage regular checks-in via phone call and text,” she said. “A mentor-mentee connection does not always have to be done in person. “Virtual connections can be just as impactful, which lends itself to branching out to those who may not live near you, but would make a difference in your leadership journey.”

MENTOR Nebraska Executive Director Melissa Mayo encouraged would-be mentors to visit the “become a mentor” button at mentornebraska.org to discover mentoring programs nearby. “You can also advocate for your workplace to implement career mentoring initiatives and flexible scheduling to support mentoring activities,” she said. Mayo suggested establishing a mentoring culture with workplace programs for new hires, flex-time to engage in youth mentoring, and partnering with MENTOR Nebraska to “provide CONTINUED

leadership training that nurtures a mentoring mindset.” For those interested in mentoring, McCroy said it’s imperative to identify an organization whose mission, vision and values align with their own. “I recommend getting involved in spaces where there are already shared experiences, shared perspectives and shared goals for the future,” McCroy said. Jones said mentors can also start from where they are. “Mentoring is all about sharing your insights and guidance in a field or aspect of life,” she added. “It isn’t about perfection, it is about your heart and willingness to share your knowledge and build a supportive and collaborative relationship.” Owens suggested that professionals seeking mentors should intentionally map out opportunities within their network, as “likely someone in your network can serve as a mentor or introduce you to someone who could be a mentor.” Buckentine recommended reaching out to those inside and outside of one’s network – someone you admire personally or professionally. “Send that LinkedIn invite, send a direct message to someone you follow,” she said. “You never know who will be open to creating a connection with you.” Once connected, Buckentine underscored establishing clear expectations for mentor-mentee relationships, formal or informal. “For example, we set minimum check-in expectations, understand each other’s communication preferences, and ask that members attend events together,” she said.

Scoular Partners with Regrow
NEWS brief
REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE PROGRAM MARRIES TECH WITH TRADITION BY SAVANNAH BEHRENDS
BETH STEBBINS
SUSTAINABILITY DIRECTOR, SCOULAR
February 1 marked the launch of Scoular’s regenerative agriculture pilot. The initiative merges technology with traditional farming practices to determine how these practices can impact the environment.
What is Regenerative Agriculture?
Beth Stebbins, director of sustainability at Scoular, described regenerative agriculture as practices that focus on soil health, which in turn can lower CO2 emissions.
“These practices can promote biodiversity by introducing different species in the soil and attracting different wildlife,” she said. Regenerative farming is not the same as organic farming since regenerative farming does not follow the same strict requirements.
BILL SALAS
CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER AND CO-FOUNDER, REGROW
“So it can be delivered to a third party for independent review,” Salas said.
Providing Financial Support To incentivize producers to get started with regenerative practices, Scoular will be providing participating producers with a credit back for each service. “We recognize that we’re not necessarily covering the cost of each practice, but we’re helping them adopt those practices,” Stebbins said. “In the long term, producers should receive benefits from introducing these practices. “For instance, if they plant a cover crop they might not need to put as much fertilizer down, or they will get higher yields [from healthier soil].”
Starting Point
“Regenerative practices can include things like planting cover crops, integrating livestock, and reducing tillage,” Stebbins said.
Scoular is starting with grain contracts at three facilities: Fremont, Nebraska; Coolidge, Kansas; and Adrian, Missouri.
Where Tech Meets Tradition
The first year will be focused on assessing the effectiveness of the program.
Scoular is teaming up with Regrow Ag, a technology company specializing in helping producers measure, report, and verify (MRV) the impact of their regenerative agricultural practices.
The process starts when participating producers upload their field boundaries and farming information into the custom software Regrow has built. Producers also record what type of regenerative agriculture they’ll be pursuing. “Regrow’s Agriculture Resilience platform verifies farmer practice adoption by aggregating data from several sources, including farmer reports, farm management systems (FMS), and remote sensing imagery,” said Bill Salas, chief strategy officer and co-founder of Regrow. Regrow’s DeNitrification DeComposition Soil Carbon (DNDC) model then estimates the environmental impact generated.
“Our goal is to enroll 20,000 acres in the program, and we’re hoping about 40 producers will be involved,” Stebbins said. She said Scoular is excited to step into a connecter role, providing insight into the process and market for both consumer and producer. “Downstream customers are looking for commodities that are produced using regional practices and [they] want to know how it’ll help positively affect their climate footprint,” she said. By measuring the output of the regenerative practices for producers, Scoular will be able to confidently explain to the consumer how their purchase is impacting the environment and economy.

COUNSELING
TECHNOLOGY JOANNE SEBBY, CHIEF RISK OFFICER AT FISERV.
Fiserv LEADING INNOVATION IN PAYMENT PROCESSING TECH Fiserv, a financial services company that offers fintech and payment solutions globally, saw 12% organic growth in the third quarter of 2023. According to Chief Risk Officer Joanne Sebby, its merchant business has seen the most growth, with the company as a whole on a trajectory for continued growth. “Our growth is a result of our ability to put our products and services together in a way that helps consumers and end users to make their lives simpler, to help our clients grow their business and grow their client base,” she said. Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Brookfield, Wisconsin, Fiserv has offices in over 20 locations globally and customers in a significantly higher number of countries. It has more than 40,000 employees around the world, 5,000 of which are in the Omaha and Lincoln offices.
Acquiring First Data
Fiserv acquired First Data in 2019, and Sebby said the combination has been transformative for the two companies. The company serves two segments, merchants and financial institutions. Assisting over 6 million merchants globally, Sebby said it provides services from online banking to embossing credit cards. Offering complementary services, Fiserv and First Data are seeking ways to integrate them in ways that meet customers’ needs. Embedded finance, for example. “We’re bringing multiple parts of our organization together to help businesses deliver financial services via a non-bank channel, such as a merchant’s app or wallet,” Sebby said. “[This] streamlines the customer user experience and is likely where the future of money movement is probably headed.”

Also, as the world marches toward digital, Fiserv is working to maintain its user-friendliness, which involves moving its infrastructure to the cloud and creating application program interfaces (API) that simplify how its developers can integrate with clients. Fiserv is continuing to improve its Clover platform for the 700,000 small businesses that use it. In addition to helping clients accept payments, it helps them manage some of their back-office operations like payroll and accounting. “[Clover] simplifies operations so small to medium-sized firms can focus on running and growing their businesses,” Sebby said.
Innovation and Security
The company’s strategy department keeps track of what’s happening in the payments industry and with some of its competitors. “Within each of the businesses and products we have a group of project managers,” Sebby said. “We have application developers that are making sure that our products are not only safe and secure and function as we want them to, but also that they’re advancing as the world advances, like moving into digital and moving things to the cloud and making sure they’re meeting all compliance and regulatory requirements.” Fiserv’s cybersecurity department establishes the overall programs. It defines the tool sets it will be able to use to create multiple layers of security in all of its products and services. “The group of product developers are responsible for adopting and implementing the security programs,” Sebby said. “We’re making sure that only people who need to be in the systems have access to the systems, making sure we’re monitoring for things that shouldn’t be happening in the systems, and fully protecting the data in a number of different ways. [Also] we’re moving money, so we have the right level of encryption and security around that as well.”
Fiserv’s People
The company offers leadership programs and employee resource groups like the Women’s Impact Network and the Asian Leadership Council. Sebby said these groups allow employees to meet other employees they might not meet during their normal day-to-day responsibilities, and also allow them to work on projects they might not otherwise work on in the course of their jobs. “We also have our community investment programs — like Back to
Business, which is our commitment to supporting small business,” she said. Additionally, Fiserv offers a military and veteran hiring program that assists the military community and their families. Recently it hired 100 individuals in Nebraska and is putting them through a training program to help ensure a smooth transition to their first job outside of the military. “We have an initiative to grow in Nebraska,” Sebby said. “We are very focused on hiring people here and getting them into our development programs.” Fiserv processes over 12,000 financial transactions per second. Sebby attributed the company’s success to its employees. “Everything we do, our people are at the heart of it,” she said. “We’re processing transactions around the globe. It takes a lot of people and a lot of great programs they run, and a lot of great work they do to keep us safe and keep us moving forward.” Sebby holds a bachelor’s degree from Buena Vista University. She is a certified public accountant and certified information security manager. Sebby served as an audit manager at Deloitte before joining First Data. She held several risk management positions during her tenure with that firm before its acquisition by Fiserv. Prior to being named chief risk officer she served as chief audit executive at Fiserv, the same position she held at First Data prior to its combination with Fiserv.
