Generational Turnover
YOUNG professionals
ORGANIZATIONS ADJUST TO ATTRACT, RETAIN YPS BY DWAIN HEBDA
DARIUS CHRISTENSEN
YP SUMMIT CHAIR, GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER
Young Professionals (YPs) entering the workforce are bringing about a revolution that is changing how the modern workplace operates. Every generation experiences the process of bringing talented fledglings into full professional adulthood, but that development process is much different with the millennial generation, the biggest socio-economic disruptors since the baby boomers.
ANDY WEST
BRAND COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, DLR GROUP
Change is Constant As these professionals take leadership roles throughout the business ecosystem, they bring with them a sea of change in how work is done. It’s a generational turnover of perspective as profound as it is inevitable. “Change is going to come and that’s why I think ‘YP’ is actually a scary word for some people,” said Darius Christensen, 32, account executive at Albireo Energy in Omaha and chairman of

both the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Young Professionals Council and its YP Summit. “My advice to CEOs is get comfortable being uncomfortable.” Part of what makes the entrance of the millennial workforce so profound is the sheer number of individuals. No generation since post-World War II has as dramatically shaped the marketplace with their buying power as millennials, or reconfigured society’s institutions — business, higher education — with their

mastery of technology and seeming imperviousness to risk. According to WhatToBecome.com, millennial YPs are as ambitious, if not more ambitious, than their predecessors, but more motivated to achieve their dreams on their terms. Surveys show 35% of millennials plan to retire before age 65, yet more than one in five have changed jobs over the past 12 months and less than 30% currently feel engaged in their work, making them liable to jump ship at any time. Of those looking to change jobs, more than 60% are considering freelancing versus full-time corporate work where they don’t feel valued or connected. In past eras, such attitudes were written off as petulant outliers by corporate employers. But the sizeable ranks of millennials — an estimated 56 million currently, expected to grow to represent 75% of the workforce by 2025 — means institutions and companies must adapt their operations to have any hope of attracting and retaining the best and brightest young minds. “We see cool things other people are doing in other towns or what other organizations are doing in our own community, and we want to be a part of something like that,” Christensen said, noting such elements don’t have to be sizeable to make a difference. “Management often assumes YPs want the moon and the stars when overall, YPs

just want to be heard. They want to feel that if they’re asking for something that’s reasonable, that everyone can sit down and have a conversation about it. Or, after you’ve listened to what they’re saying and it’s not something you’re willing to do at the drop of a hat, that you’re at least willing to compromise by making a solid plan going forward.”
Develop Talent to Retain Talent
Andy West, senior associate and architect with DLR Group agreed, and said YP development programs must keep all three of these themes in mind to be effective. “YP development distills down to building a trusting relationship with a shared common purpose, regular meeting times and well-rounded discussion topics beyond work,” he said. “A healthy connection is one that is reciprocated where the mentor-mentee line is blurred, and impactful learning flows both ways. Another key is allowing YPs to talk about the source of their goals and motivations, the highs and lows of their experiences, and how they’re balancing work with their personal lives.” Assigning a mentor is good, even essential, but that alone does not guarantee results, West said. The process must include intentional steps to ensure the relationship is a fruitful one on both sides. “Once goals are established, the responsibility shouldn’t be shouldered by one individual. Rather, mentors and mentees should brainstorm solutions together in real time. That’s when the magic happens,” he said. “It’s important to understand that mentoring is not just important for each individual’s growth, but also for the company’s growth and beyond as a form of community-building. For YPs, a sense of belonging and empowerment from day one brings results earlier in the mentoring process.” West also noted YPs want to be
acknowledged for their individual strengths and how these lend themselves to the team, rather than be a faceless part of the collective. Therefore, while certain components must be met with any successful YP development program, the actual delivery of those programs should offer a high degree of flexibility. “A flexible approach to mentoring — where it can be group-focused, oneon-one or a hybrid — is important,” he said. “While some individuals don’t want one more thing to track or one more program to monitor, others desire a type of framework that can jump start a mentoring relationship or relationships. “And, remember individuals use mentoring for different outcomes — some
are looking to expedite opportunities to build experience and relationships, and some are simply looking to learn more about new programs and tools to assist in their daily roles.” Michaela Proper, director of operations for planit inc., said YPs today also tend to gravitate to jobs where the impact is bigger than the company balance sheet. Companies that underscore that link, therefore, stand a better chance of retaining these workers long-term. “Young professionals are looking for a variety of ways to bridge their professional lives with their personal values and missions,” Proper said. “We are fortunate to have opportunities through our events to assist non-
profits for a great impact on the community, as well as offer fresh ideas to clients to meet their mission of sustainability or supporting other causes. We encourage our employees to be active in the community, following their individual passions.” Proper said one common mistake companies often make is painting with too broad a brush, which can lead them to assume what YP employees value. By contrast, planit seeks to discover what makes the individual employees tick when it comes to work satisfaction. “The best policy is that there is not a one-size-fits-all mentality,” she said. “Young professionals bring a variety of talent and interests to our team, therefore we look for a

variety of ways to grow and connect within a company.” “We take a personal approach to mentoring at planit by spending a great deal of time looking at and evaluating the talents and interests of our individual team members. Our goal is to align our team with roles that best fit their strengths as well as challenge them to expand their knowledge and understanding of the events industry. We partner newer team members with tenured event producers to provide on-the-job training, development and guidance.”
Colleges Take Note
Companies aren’t the only entities refining their approach when it comes to developing YPs to take their place in the corporate world. Connie Kreikemeier, executive director of Career Studio at Midland University in Fremont, said students in general today have clearer expectations for what they want out of their college experience and if they don’t get it, will take their tuition dollars elsewhere. “Students are seeking relevant, hands-on learning experiences
that connect them in very practical ways to real-world opportunities,” she said. “They want their college education to prepare them with not only knowledge, but the skills to successfully navigate their career.” Midland’s approach to meeting these demands employs several components. As a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the school stays abreast of what employers desire most. They then use that data as the basis for its DRIVE model that intentionally provides opportunities for all students,

regardless of major, to develop their skills in relevant areas. “Through this curriculum revision, a new career development course was implemented for all sophomore and transfer students,” Kreikemeier said. “This course helps students at a critical time in their college career to explore degree and career options, build foundational resumes and social media profiles, learn how to search and apply for internships and ultimately, create their own career strategy plan to achieve their goals. “Midland also uses the CliftonStrengths assessment to help students understand their strengths and what comes naturally to them. The DRIVE model and use of CliftonStrengths has helped our students know what employers want and need and how their personal strengths and skills, courses, internships, job experiences and extracurricular activities are giving them relevant experiences.” University of Nebraska at Omaha students are also connected to the community through the vast network of relationships the school maintains within businesses and nonprofits in the community. “Eighty percent of our students have work experience through internships and jobs, and we offer guidance on how to connect those work experiences with what students learn in the classroom,” said Levi Thiele, UNO’s director of career development. “It is not enough to have the skills; students applying for jobs must also be able to articulate how their experiences align with the position requirements. “Another important skill for postgraduation career success involves

Perhaps the most visible display of YP development is the Greater Omaha Chambers YP Council and its signature annual event, the YP Summit, scheduled for March 31. “The goal of the council is to retain, develop and attract YPs. That’s our main goal,” said Christensen, who has been involved with both groups for multiple years. “From a development point of view, the YP Summit is fantastic because everyone needs to be a little bit better, whether that’s how to ask for a raise, how to email more professionally or knowing your worth on the job. It’s very important to hone those skills as we have a lot of leaders in this community who want to do great things. We give them the tools to do so.” Christensen said one thing that makes the Chamber’s approach particularly effective is its ability to consistently serve a fundamental purpose while remaining flexible enough to adapt to the changing face of its YP audience. Page 8 • February 11, 2022
“Through a big event like the Summit, I think the most important thing is to give people options and make it relevant to today,” he said. “When I first started, our big thing was what does transportation look like? It was a huge issue and still is kind of an issue. Now, five years later, it’s about DEI and understanding how you can be an ally in that space and help your employer get to the place where you want it to be.” The payoff for addressing such issues in the local workplace has a wider impact for the business community as a whole, Christensen said. “Local events like a cocktail hour or meeting at a brew pub, that’s never going to change; people like to have a good time and enjoy a fun setting and shaking hands,” he said. “But how do we attract people from Central and Western Nebraska and other places, like Des Moines or Wichita? How do we get YPs there to say, ‘Hey, Omaha’s a dynamic place’? That’s the big challenge. “I think YPs now, as a generation, we’re very much go-getters. I think we’re very much a generation that sees a space or an opportunity for great things to happen. And if someone gives us the tools or the opportunity to make that happen, we’re going to go make it happen.”

TRENDS TO WATCH FOR IN 2022
BY BROOKE STRICKLAND
BEN JACKSON
VICE PRESIDENT, WP ENGINE
Nearly every week, an issue with compromised data at a company occurs. When it comes to running a business, data security is a huge issue that is at the forefront of almost any major business decision or discussion. Getting a handle on a company’s specific data – especially those companies that continue to make space for more remote workers – is key to ensuring that valuable information is kept as safe as possible.

Making Security a Priority
PRESIDENT, AVITURE
Mark Griffis, Aviture president and CEO explained, “The pandemic created an environment where seamless remote interactions are not just critical for reaching and delighting customers, but commonplace. “As more and more business operations move to the cloud, companies are taking a look at their legacy systems and realizing they need a more secure, accessible way to store

their most important information. That means cloud migration is immensely popular right now, and that goes arm in arm with cybersecurity, data analysis, and integrating systems to safely share important data between silos.” Chris Vilim, president of CoreTech, reiterated the importance of having a strong security setup. “The number one thing we are seeing from clients right now are questions about security,” he said. “They are concerned about a breach or ransomware that may impact their
business. It’s more of a ‘when’ not ‘if’ they will get hacked, so they are looking for protection.”
The Rise of E-commerce
Staying home became the mantra for many during the past two years. Because of this, the world of e-commerce has taken off, giving people an avenue to create, sell, and earn income. This new trend is likely here to stay for a while. Ben Jackson, vice president of WP Engine said, “E-commerce is skyrocketing, particularly with easy-to-use templated content management systems like Shopify and WooCommerce. In just a few clicks, you can set up a digital storefront, upload pictures of whatever you want to sell – from sock monkeys to software – and publish within minutes.”
Integrating Digital Solutions
Jackson explained that his business is now a virtual-first company, using their offices as collaborative spaces for innovation when it is safe to do so. The business also uses video conferencing and builds its own intranet for their teams. This has given the company the expertise needed to grow and ultimately, offer enhanced solutions to its client base. He shared that one of the most Page 10 • February 11, 2022

common things that his company is seeing is more businesses that are focusing on website innovation that will better capture the target market. “The rate of innovation is likely to continue to accelerate. We’ve seen a rising trend in virtual education, health care and mental wellness sites, and a number of new platforms created to fight social injustice,” he said. “As more and more small and midsized businesses innovate to take advantage of digital to complement their physical goods or services, they are seeing a need to make searching their websites ultra-simple, hosting dynamic content needs to be flexible and run fast.” Josh Kolar, founder and CEO of
driverDOC, explained that in his industry of automating paperwork and documentation in the transportation and freight industry, having an effective digital data sharing process has been a major component lately. This is especially important now, as the world’s supply chain proves to be dismantled and disrupted. “The pandemic significantly impacted the supply chain and logistics,” he said. “Arrival of supplies and the ability to predict shipments based upon past experiences completely disappeared. “Also, drivers were quickly required to find touchless ways to share paperwork and communicate upon dispatch and delivery. Our customers
need technology that replaces manual paper process that also ‘speak’ digitally to parties in the supply chain. “It is good to have an internal database, but it is excellent to automate data sharing across an ecosystem. Automation is key to reducing the steps required to communicate and there should be fewer touch points for each user.”
Here to Stay
Remote work is another large piece of the puzzle that businesses continue to roll with right now. While this may have initially been considered temporary at the beginning of the pandemic for many companies both
locally and nationwide, remote work is now proven to be an effective method for many operating businesses. “Some of the primary questions companies are asking technology professionals are: how do they set up employees for remote work for the long-term and ensure data stays secure in multiple locations, as well as what software or technology is needed to,” Vilim said. “We have certainly seen companies that were once staunch in their ideas of no-remote work change their ideas about it. That has really been a big shift that has not just impacted computers, but companies that had older phone systems, too,” Vilim said.

One side effect of the pandemic is that every business now competes in a global market, making UX (User Experience) a key differentiator. - MARK GRIFFIS, PRESIDENT & CEO, AVITURE
“To some extent, we have seen the amount of reliance on phone systems dwindle a bit and have seen a huge increase in people communicating through their computers. Our clients have embraced remote technology overall.” He also shared that he has been working with clients to utilize the tools that they already have at their disposal, such as Microsoft Teams. He said using new technology that they already
have access to is something that is very useful, but many times it feels intimidating to learn. But, he said the ability that technology like Microsoft Teams has to help employees collaborate, share documents, and even extend their reach to incorporate outside vendors or clients can end up being one of the most useful applications that they have at their fingertips. “It requires people to learn how to use

it and their success is based on how well they adopt it for their unique business,” Vilim said. “We work on educating them on the capabilities of the system, then help them apply it, so they can be impacted in a positive way.” Ken Moreano, president at Scott Data Center, discussed not only the tools needed for a remote workforce, but the connectivity that comes with it. His company has been working to provide clients with large bandwidth capacity, in addition to flexible workspaces that are reliable and offer scalable bandwidth. “The collaboration tools needed for effective remote work continue to develop and their high adoption rate resulting from the pandemic has accelerated the innovation in that space,” he explained. “There appears to be an increased need for mobile devices as the workforce does not seem to be using workstations in a defined location. The remote workforce has also placed pressure on the network and bandwidth connectivity. Students and working professionals alike have expressed the need for remote flexible work environments. “In 2022, we anticipate continued pressure on network connectivity, the need for IT support, remote work locations, and services that either augment or replace IT staff.”

for quite some time, but there will likely be a resurgence of what this means for small and medium-sized businesses looking to establish themselves in an already competitive marketplace. Griffis said that UX is something to keep an eye out for in 2022. He said, “There’s going to be a renewed focus on the user experience. One side effect of the pandemic is that every business now competes in a global market, making UX a key differentiator. “You need to affect current customers and reach new ones based on research, defined personas, usability, and accessibility. UX is a science, not an art, and you need to treat it as such, with proven processes that achieve your strategic goals.”
Local Innovation
While a lot of the big technology trends to watch for may be coming from the large, well-known global companies of the world, it is important to keep a local perspective. Nebraska is full of innovators and creators that are playing a part in changing the face of technology and how it can benefit users everywhere. Griffis shared, “The big thing I hope people understand is that exciting, innovative technology isn’t only available to the Amazons and Apples of the world. “You would be amazed by the array of start-ups right here in Omaha that are launching products and services with the potential to change the face of their industries, or the number of organizations quietly putting forward world-class applications that could compete with the most well-known tech companies.” Jackson agreed and said, “Since the pandemic, we’re seeing the rate

of innovation seemingly increase at a much faster rate, as both consumers and businesses are investing more and more time to create digital experiences that look and feel more human. “Optimistically, we’re excited about how much we’ve learned in nearly two years of virtual work. Whatever comes next, we’re excited about how much we’ve learned to depend on each other, even if only virtually, to make things better.”
Investing in the Future As with any new advancements in technology, there comes the discussion of what is needed to spend in order to stay on top of the latest and greatest tools. Vilim said that more businesses will be discussing bigger jumps in overall budget so more can be invested in the technology that keeps data secure. “It is always important to remind people that as they utilize more technology and it becomes a part of their business, that they have to understand the budget that is involved in that,” he said. “It is key to recognize that it is not just a necessary thing, but that it is really an investment in better efficiency and productivity for their team.” For businesses that are not sure where to begin when it comes to keeping up with the ever-changing world of technology, Griffis suggested identifying key problem areas that need to be solved. He recommended, “How do you start? First, fall in love with your problem, not your potential solution. From there, you can begin to work back towards the right solution. Anyone can take their moonshot, and they can do it from anywhere.”

RESTAURANT SCENE
NATIONAL reach CORPORATE EXECUTIVE CHEF TONY GENTILE, PRESIDENT TOM ALLISMA, CEO NICK HOGAN AND COO ANTHONY HITCHCOCK
Dishing Up Unique Concepts
FLAGSHIP RESTAURANT GROUP EXPANDS NATIONAL PRESENCE In the 20 years since Omaha-based Flagship Restaurant Group opened Blue Sushi Sake Grill with a fun and new way to experience sushi, the four owners of the steadily growing corporation have expanded their creative dining experience mantra far from Omaha to include ventures in nine states, with 1,100-some employees, and all coordinated from a growing corporate office staff of 35 operating out of 8,200 square feet at 14450 Eagle Run Drive, Suite 100. Even those quarters are being remodeled in a $550,000 initiative that will include a 2,200-square-foot test kitchen that will employ five. Tony Gentile, corporate executive chef and one of Flagship’s four owners, said the meticulously designed test facility will invite even more creativity and menu development. “It will aid us in developing beverage and food programs for future [restaurant] concepts,” said Gentile, a Houston native who selected studying the culinary arts at the University of Houston over the other option his parents gave him after making messes on the kitchen floor at home. “The other option was joining the military,” he remembered.
Gentile is joined in Flagship Restaurant Group by Omaha native and CEO Nick Hogan, who has a law degree from the University of San Diego; Millard native and President Tom Allisma, who has architectural credentials from University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and COO Anthony Hitchcock, an Austin native and graduate of Houston’s Conrad Hilton College.
Expanded Reach At present, Flagship Restaurant Group operates 24 full-service locations and six fast-casual restaurants in nine states. In addition to Nebraska, the firm does business in Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Texas, Colorado, Ohio, Kansas and Indiana. Hogan, who first tried sushi while at the University of Arizona, said the opening of Flagship’s first Blue Sushi Sake Grill in 3,100 square feet above what is now the firm’s corporate offices in 2002 was quite memorable. “We were 27 or 28 years old at the time and it was wildly successful,” he said. “After 14 years in our original location, we moved just a few doors

east of the original — with twice of the space.” Additional Blue Sushi Sake Grill locations have been opened in The Shops of Legacy and the Old Market. Plans for 2022 in Omaha include three new restaurants at 10th & Harney streets where two buildings have been acquired and will be developed. Additional expansions are planned for Kansas City, Birmingham, Tempe, and Phoenix. “Our plan is to open five or six restaurants a year,” Hogan said. Hogan said Blue Sushi Sake Grill’s relatively fast growth led the group in 2004 to debut its second concept: Roja Mexican Grill and Margarita Bar in The Shops of Legacy. Gentile said the menu is founded in Tex-Mex basics, including homemade flour tortillas, refried beans, chile con carne, fajitas, and cheese and onion enchiladas. Lime margaritas are a specialty. In 2012 the four partners rolled out their third concept: Blatt Beer & Table, immediately north of Downtown Omaha. “It’s a hub for those who appreciate craft beer and curated pub food,” Gentile said, noting that additional locations have been added in Shops of Legacy and Flagship Commons at Westroads Mall. The location at 610 N. 12th St. captures many fans at TD Ameritrade Stadium, nearby Creighton University athletic facilities, and events at CHI Health Center. The Blatt plays on the name of Rosenblatt, the name of Omaha’s former city stadium and the one-time home of the NCAA Men’s College World Series. In 2013 Flagship Restaurant Group opened Plank Seafood Provisions, an oyster bar and seafood grill at 1205 Howard St., near two of its other restaurants in the Old Market. Specialties include New England clam chowder, oysters and anchor steam drafts.
Unique in Omaha In 2015, Flagship Restaurant Group garnered considerable media attention when in partnership with General Growth Properties on a
22,000 square foot “blank canvas” at the Westroads Mall into a Flagship Commons food court. Allisma, a licensed architect and tenured teacher at UNL, said the 430-seat facility with an interior wrapped in red barn wood was the first of its kind in the Midwest. It has a variety of seating styles including booths, banquets, lounge chairs, counter seating, and a patio. “The project and its concepts were born in Omaha and are being operated by Omaha folks,” he said. “It’s a Disneyland for people who love food with something for everyone.” Hogan likened it to introducing existing and new local restaurant concepts while bringing a new entertainment element to food court dining. “It presented a brand-new vision,” he said. “It was spurred by us and our desire to evolve creatively as (a group of) restaurateurs and to drive innovation in Omaha.” Eight concepts currently occupy space in the venture on the second floor of the Westroads. In 2020, Flagship Restaurant Group rolled out its seventh and most recent concept Revival House, an exotic cocktail bar in downtown Des Moines. Within the past year, Flagship has partnered with New York-based Ivan Ramen — a noodle shop — to offer Ivan Ramen’s menu for delivery and takeout only through a ghost-kitchen-style operation set up in the kitchens of Blue Sushi restaurants. Regarding growth, Hogan said Flagship Restaurant Group is targeting its growth on the Omaha market. “With five new facilities in the downtown area, we’re developing some new concepts for this market,” he said. “There’s not that many groups out there doing what we’re doing at our level.” Gentile noted that the Omaha-based firm’s seafood products such as tuna, eel, and salmon are purchased at a cost of about 25% more — often because the business adheres to a strict policy that the sourcing of seafood be raised responsibly and sustainably. Last year, some 120,000 pounds of tuna, 15,000 pounds of eel and 90,000 pounds of salmon were bought.

FRANCHISING
RESIDENTIAL remodeling JASON KRUEGER, FRANCHISE OWNER, KITCHEN TUNE UP
KITCHEN handyman KITCHEN TUNE-UP PLANS RETAIL STOREFRONT
Since Jason Krueger bought his Kitchen Tune-Up franchise in Lincoln three years ago, which operates out of his home, he has concentrated on growing his business enough to open a retail space. Aberdeen, South Dakota-based Kitchen Tune-Up has been in business for more than 30 years. Krueger bought the franchise for Lincoln in early 2018 and serves customers in a 40-mile radius of the capital city, including some work in Omaha. The firm does kitchen and bathroom remodeling, which can range from a complete remodel to a basic tune-up such as replacing aging hardware — like handles and drawer pulls — painting, custom cabinets, and cabinet refacing. The firm will have to grow a little more to make a retail space commercially feasible. “If I can hire a full-time crew member, I might be able to hire a full-time salesperson,” he said. Including Krueger, there are six part-time employees. “One guy who just turned 74 built houses and cabinets all of his life,”
Krueger said. “He works three days a week for me. I have a couple of college kids who work around their class schedules and other work schedules. If I get much busier, I’ll need a full-time project manager.”
Hands On
Krueger is still highly involved in all of the projects but hired a parttime salesman about two years ago. He is working to grow the company steadily but is wary of growing too fast. “[Growing] is easier with a franchise because [the franchiser] helps you out, but it’s easy to get ahead of yourself if you’re not careful,” he said. The firm is facing the same supply chain issues as other companies, which makes it difficult to get the right supplies when they are needed. “I’d figured out how to solve the problem, but I couldn’t get the part I wanted, so I had to do something different,” he said. Krueger credits the company’s success to “under promising and over delivering.” He does extra things his customers don’t expect at no charge. “I’ve fixed screen doors and steps,” he said. “We have one customer

who is getting new flooring — not from us — be we have an extra trailer, and I put that in their driveway so they could put their furniture in the trailer. Sometimes they don’t even notice some of the things I did. I just think it’s the right thing to do, especially for older people who don’t have kids or a handyman and don’t know how to find that kind of service. Sometimes they’ll just mention something, and I’ll take care of it.”
The Right Fit
Krueger grew up in Hebron but left in 1985 at the end of his junior year in high school when his father, who was a rural mail carrier, moved the family to Kearney so he could get a bigger route. He finished high school in Kearney and did one year of college in Sidney but didn’t like it, so he left to work in a variety of jobs. In 2002, at the age of 35, he had an opportunity to return to college through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and in December, 2007, graduated with a degree in mechanized systems management from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
“I always tell people that [mechanized systems management] is a cross between mechanical engineering and ag engineering,” Krueger said. After college he mostly worked in the grain industry. He was a job coordinator for a millwright company for two and a half years, then he did project management on projects up to $25 million for ADM in Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota and Missouri. Then he worked for about four years for a farm-based ag company in Henderson where he built grain bins, center pivots and other projects for farmers. “I’d been looking for a franchise to supplement my income, then the owner [of the Henderson company] decided to make some management changes, so I had to restructure my focus to something I could make a living at,” Krueger said. He talked to several different franchises including a lawn company, a technology company, and a vending company. “I really like the people at [Kitchen Tune-Up’s] home office in Aberdeen,” Krueger said. “They have great Midwestern values and a great work ethic. A lot of other companies I talked to were on the coasts.”

CREIGHTON LAW GRAD LEADS FIRM TO NEW MARKET
I got done with my [undergraduate] in business and knew that probably wasn’t going to satisfy my desire for the goals I had professionally. - J. DANIEL WEIDNER, PARTNER, KOLEY JESSEN
J. Daniel Weidner, partner with Koley Jessen, has spent more than a decade developing and growing the firm’s construction practice, while giving back to the community. He’s been so busy, in fact, that he was named a Midlands Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree just in time for his 40th birthday.
Never Settle Even his decision to get into law reveals the plans he had for himself both personally and professionally; plans he’s brought to fruition over 16 years with the firm, the first two while still attending Creighton University School of Law. “I got done with my [undergraduate] in business and knew that probably wasn’t going to satisfy my desire for the goals I had professionally,” he said. “I still am a little bit of a bleeding heart and also wanted the opportunity to be able to help people by developing a very specific skill set. I knew regardless of what I ended up doing, obtaining a J.D. would allow me to help people and open a lot of different doors.” Weidner established himself in the firm’s talented roster of attorneys for both his legal acumen and his business instincts. By 2009, he’d launched Koley Jessen’s construction law practice group, seeing a valuable opportunity in the marketplace to broaden the firm’s focus in this area. Despite stiff competition from other firms, he’s led Koley Jessen to carve out a profitable share of that market. “We knew how to do litigation really well, so it became how do we translate to be topnotch in the construction industry and give people the confidence that when you’ve got a multi-million-dollar construction dispute, you want us in your corner,” he said. “People in the construction industry, a lot of them, really want the good, the bad and the ugly. They don’t want a cheerleader attorney. They want you to just talk straight with them so they can make a business decision and move on. And that works great with my personality and I love the work.”
A Drive to Give Back Weidner has been equally ambitious in community service work. He’s dedicated nearly a decade of service to Completely Kids in various capacities, including the group’s board and Executive Committee. Other organizations that have benefited from his participation include Robert M. Spire Inns of Court, Brush Up Nebraska Paint-A-Thon and Grant’s Cause for Spina Bifida. He said the example set by his mother and grandmother while growing up fuels his passion to serve today. “My grandmother – we called her Non – would have a bag full of extra gloves and extra scarves and hats in the car for when she was driving around south Omaha. If she saw a kid walking to school who didn’t have a hat, she would stop and ask, ‘Can I give you a hat?’” he said. “My mom will drop anything she’s doing for anyone who needs help at a moment’s notice, whether it’s through the nonprofit that she works for, with the church or just people at the school where she’s the school nurse. “Seeing two of the most influential women in my life always willing to do that ingrained in me that I have an opportunity to give back. It’s my moral obligation to do it and I really enjoy doing it.” Weidner graduated from the University of Nebraska Lincoln with a degree in business administration in 2004, before graduating magna cum laude from Creighton’s law school in 2007. In 2014, he became an equity shareholder in Koley Jessen. He and his wife Brenda have four children, ages 3 to 11. PRESENTING SPONSOR

Gogetap was named President when her father and company founder, Wayne Simmonds, handed the responsibility to her after serving as President since 1960. Mr. Simmonds passed away in June of 2019 at the age of 80. Gogetap said of the company’s third president in over 60 years, “My dad was instrumental in bringing Andy on board five years ago. His focus is on delivering a true sense of transparency and speed to resolution for our clients. Petersen believes the future of FBG looks very bright, saying, “Like many industries, FBG was deeply impacted by COVID-19 in 2020, but we had an advantage in that we were ready to clean and disinfect our customers facilities at the level they needed to stay in business and serve their customers.” Andy and his wife, Fran, have two children: son Drew and his wife Whitney are expecting twin boys soon, and daughter Ashley and her husband Evan have one daughter, Quinn. The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document to the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and there for only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment options are cash or check. 3. Deadline is noon on Tuesday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5. You will receive a paid invoice copy the first week it runs.
