COVER story MARY WURST, ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL AT ALVINE ENGINEERING READS “LUCY’S ENGINEERING ADVENTURE” TO 2ND GRADE STUDENTS AT DISNEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO BUILD AWARENESS FOR ENGINEERING CAREERS.

Welcome to the Future ENGINEERS WEEK SHOWCASES OPPORTUNITIES Aimed at inspiring the next generation of innovators, Engineers Week 2024 takes place February 18 through February 24th. Started in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, professionals and educational institutions participate in events throughout the week to tout the engineering profession to students. The industry is evolving quickly, largely driven by advancements in technology, a greater focus on sustainability and shifting demands. This year will likely bring new trends, but one thing is certain: introducing the next generation to engineering careers is a perennial need as demand grows.

Nebraska Career Outlook

Lance C. Pérez, dean of the College of Engineering and Omar H. Heins professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, said the outlook is bright for those considering a career in engineering. “Projections by the Nebraska Department of Labor through 2030 indicate an 11% growth in STEM (science, technology, engineering and

math) related occupations by the end of the decade compared to less than 8% growth in non-STEM occupations,” Pérez said. “Nationally, it’s an even larger disparity with an 11.2% growth rate by 2030 in STEM jobs compared to a 7.2% increase in non-STEM jobs. Companies in Nebraska and nationally are hiring our graduates and we know the demand for qualified professionals in engineering, computing and construction remains high.” Bill Epp, west regional manager for Benesch, said there are over 150 current openings at the company. “The demand for talent is creating a lot of opportunity for engineers, which makes the industry’s future especially bright,” he said. “There is no better time than now to pursue an engineering career. “The spectrum of work is extremely broad with opportunities in the office, field and remote. The significant number of job opportunities is creating demand and driving competitive salaries.” Epp said building an early foundation for students can be beneficial for a career in engineering. Mary Wurst, P.E., associate principal at Alvine Engineering, highlighted opportunities that a career in engineering provides.

An engineering degree shows you are a hard worker, and trains you to be a true problem solver. This makes you an ideal candidate for a successful career in a variety of fields. MARY WURST, ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL, ALVINE ENGINEERING

“Because of the growth and demand for great engineers, we are seeing engineers of all experience levels having the ability to ‘shop’ for the right employer, and truly find the right fit for their career aspirations,” Wurst said. “Employment is very competitive right now. My specific area, architectural engineering, has had 100% job placement for graduates of the Durham School [of Architectural Engineering & Construction at UNL] for as long as I can remember. Architectural engineers are highly sought after right now.”

E-Week Activities

Celebrated as one of the largest STEM events of the year in the United States, E-Week’s theme this year is ‘Welcome to the Future.’ DiscoverE, the organization behind E-Week, is working to inspire innovators through hands-on engineering activities, lesson plans and other information about engineering education and the careers available. Local engineering firms, schools, and universities plan events to coincide with the national event. Pérez noted that the UNL College of Engineering has celebrated an Engineers Week of its own since 1913. “The College of Engineering hosts several events with industry partners for students to participate, including industry mixers where students meet with engineering professionals; an engineer’s night out that’s popular with students and industry sponsors because it provides a unique engagement opportunity in a less formal setting; and industry CONTINUED

and professional panels and workshops that focus on professional development and career growth,” he said. This commitment to building up the next generation of engineering professionals is evidenced by the university’s current $190 million multi-phase facilities project, including the completion of the $115 million Kiewit Hall. “Funding from the university, the state, and corporate and private donors illustrates the dedicated commitment to helping position the college as a leading source of engineering, education, research and engagement in the nation while serving our statewide land-grant mission,” Pérez said. The team at Alvine Engineering is also using E-Week to promote their profession. “We do a lot of outreaches during this week and throughout the year,” Wurst explained. “We focus on promotion through partnerships in our communities, and through a social media campaign where we feature our employees and their unique engineering career paths and perspectives. “Last year I personally had a great time reading an engineering storybook to second graders at a Ralston elementary school. They had so many good questions about what I do as an engineer. I also spent a class period at the Millard STEM Academy discussing engineering as a career and presenting some of my work.” Alvine has had a longstanding partnership with the Durham School at the Peter Kiewit Institute on the University of Nebraska Omaha campus, not only through E-Week but also throughout the year. “Our employees do a lot of mentoring and networking through events and classes,” she said. “This fall, I spent time reviewing resumes with students ahead of the career fair. We also have multiple employees volunteer with engineering classes at the university, specifically, an introductory class and a capstone class that Alvine Engineering has been involved in for years providing industry mentors.” Benesch dedicates time for engagement throughout the year to conferences, career fair participation, and collaborations with local professional organizations. During E-Week, the firm’s team takes a more targeted approach to promote and celebrate the profession. Sunny Mullen, a project manager for Benesch’s Omaha division, has been involved with DiscoverE’s ‘Future City’ competition for more than a decade, which is featured on day two of this year’s celebration. Future City is a hands-on cross-curricular educational program for students in grades six through eight and teaches them to use the engineering design process and project management skills to find solutions for citywide sustainability issues. City of South Sioux City, NE | South Sioux City Wastewater Treatment Facility

The City of South Sioux City has a large industrial sector and the city needed to identify a new way of treating wastewater that provides necessary infrastructure, self-reliance and continued economic viability. HDR and the city completed a feasibility study to determine treatment options for a new direct discharge plant that serves industrial and potential domestic wastewater sources from the city. It was determined that the best alternative was covered anaerobic lagoons followed by Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS), which is a novel treatment approach for high-strength industrial wastes and was the more economical option over other technologies. In addition to improved economics, the proposed technology was selected due to its compact footprint, energy efficiency, capacity for modular expansion to meet future growth and nutrient removal potential. The 2-million-gallon-per-day facility provides additional treatment solutions to the industry and is the first of its kind AGS to Nebraska. The facility is flexible and scalable and offers options for future nutrient removal, planned integration, and future industrial growth.

Nebraska Department of Transportation | NDOT Culvert Inventory & Inspection Tool

Felsburg Holt & Ullevig (FHU) proposed the NDOT Culvert Inventory & Assessment Tool project in response to challenges NDOT faced in managing culverts across the State highway system. This is an overwhelming task considering there are most likely 40,000+ culverts along Nebraska’s roadways. FHU partnered with NDOT to develop the State’s first centralized database of highway culverts providing quick access to size, type, material, condition, history, and maintenance activity. After a comprehensive study of national best practices, FHU outlined a culvert inventory and management program that included recommendations for inspection frequency, detailed a culvert component rating system, and outlined implementation costs and benefits. FHU also developed a Culvert Inventory and Inspection GIS tool, building out the geodatabase framework, and provided it to NDOT for replication within the State GIS database. Finally, FHU provided guidance, internal testing, and training assistance for the Culvert Inventory & Inspection Tool as it was implemented within NDOT.

The Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District collaborated with Benesch on an 80-acre stream and wetland bank instrument project near Big Papio Creek. This venture was in alliance with the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), which owns the neighboring Allwine Prairie. Using historical survey data from 1856, Benesch aimed to restore the creek and wetlands to their natural state. Three tributaries of Big Papio Creek on the site were degraded due to channelization and headcutting. The team leveraged the 1856 data and stakeholder ambitions of reviving prairie streams to frame a restoration strategy. Experts assessed watershed hydrology, studied channel hydraulics and designed two-stage winding channels that overflowed into adjacent wetland pools. These raised stream profiles are safeguarded against further erosion through baffled chute drop structures. The design phase wrapped up in Spring 2021, with construction slated for Fall 2021. The Nebraska Stream Assessment Protocol was employed for stream evaluation, with annual checks planned for the next five years. ACEC NE 16 • February 16, 2024

JOSH WILSON P.E.,

ALVINE ENGINEERING

Josh Wilson, P.E., an electrical engineer and project manager with Alvine Engineering, has been selected as the 2024 Young Professional of the Year by the American Council of Engineering Companies Nebraska (ACEC NE). The award recognizes accomplishments of Nebraska engineers under age 35 who have contributed to the engineering profession in the state and made a positive community impact. Josh graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) with a Master of Science in Architectural Engineering. Josh’s crowning achievements include critical infrastructure design work for the Omaha Airport Authority, which has been a vital piece in keeping Omaha’s Eppley Airfield a high-performing facility that continues to fuel the city’s growing economy. Josh’s architectural lighting and electrical design for the Creighton University School of Dentistry were recognized with an Award of Merit from the Illuminating Engineering Society in 2019. The electrical infrastructure also contributed to earning the 2019 Higher Education Project of the Year award from Engineering News-Record Midwest along with the American School & University Architectural Portfolio Award (Special Citation).

When Josh isn’t mentoring our firm’s young professionals or coordinating projects, he enjoys mentoring students at his alma mater: the UNL Durham School of Architectural Engineering & Construction. As an industry mentor, his leadership skills contributed to the student design teams’ submission to the 2016 National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Engineering Award competition. The submission received grand prize honors and was also submitted and accepted to the Architectural Engineering Institute’s 2017 National Conference. Outside of the office and the classroom, Josh is an honorary American Red Cross 6-gallon platelet donor and Council vice president at First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Oakland, Nebraska. In his spare time, Josh likes to volunteer and donate through the United Way of the Midlands, Together Inc., and participates in Durham Museum events.

HELPING NEBRASKA BANKS WITH HR BY SAVANNAH BEHRENDS

I would encourage banks across the state, as well as other businesses, to begin to think about this shared services model. RICHARD BAIER, PRESIDENT, NEBRASKA BANKERS ASSOCIATION

RICHARD BAIER

PRESIDENT, NEBRASKA BANKERS ASSOCIATION

STEPHEN STULL

CHAIRMAN AND CEO, NEBRASKA BANK

Nebraska banks of all sizes are facing an increasing amount of compliance challenges that can come with steep costs. Stepping in to aid member banks, the Nebraska Bankers Association collaborated with Zelle Human Resource Solutions to create resourceHIVE, a subscription-based solution for varying complexities.

Challenges = Innovation

When Stephen Stull’s family decided to purchase Farmers State Bank in Dodge (now Nebraska Bank) it was a singular location with 12 employees and a management portfolio of $43 million. Twelve years later the bank has grown to nine locations, 62 employees, and over $430 million in managed assets.

The steep growth has meant more reporting challenges, especially as the bank inched over the 50-employee mark. “We needed help,” said Stull, the bank’s chairman and CEO.

That’s when bank leadership contacted Zelle Human Resource Solutions. Zelle, which grew out of Nebraska-based Union Bank, stepped up, helping the growing community bank complete the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) report, updating the employee handbook, and standardizing job descriptions and pay. At the same time, Sull was chairman of the Nebraska Bankers Association. “I said, it’d be nice if we had a virtual HR person, similar to the virtual compliance officer program the NBA is a part of,” he said.

With that, the NBA got to work with Zelle to build what NBA President Richard Baier described as “a retainer model” that has tiers.

Accessible to All

Baier said association members across the board have expressed human resource challenges similar to Nebraska Bank.

“Larger institutions said they would like to have a fallback in case there are very specific issues that their HR teams aren’t comfortable answering,” Baier said. On the other end of the spectrum, small community banks often don’t have an employee whose sole job is human resources. “They may have an individual on staff that has three of four different roles, and quite frankly they don’t have time to keep up with the newest rules and regulations,” Baier said. Banks with less than 50 employees also face fewer compliance requirements that may require an HR professional, making hiring a full-time HR employee cost-prohibitive. At the base level, resourceHIVE can help small banks with some of the basic HR tasks, such as drafting policies, job descriptions, and exit interviews. Larger banks can subscribe to the higher service tiers, which include help navigating through the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and worker’s compensation. Regardless of the tier, banks have access to human resource experts, staffed through Zelle through a live chat feature. The subscription became available for banks in early January, and more information can be found at thehivehr.com. “I would encourage banks across the state, as well as other businesses, to begin to think about this shared services model,” Baier said. “You gain access to a highly professional, highly skilled staff member that you might not be able to afford otherwise.”

EVERY MONTH SHOULD BE CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH BY JOSH PLANOS

BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU OF THE MIDWEST PLAINS Address: 11811 P St, Omaha, NE 68137 Phone: 402-391-7612 Website: www.bbbinc.org Social Media: @BBBMidwestPlains

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is celebrated each October and serves as a valuable reminder of how imperative it is that we safeguard our digital lives. Late January brings National Data Privacy Week, which reintroduces the sentiment. In response to the ever-growing threat posed by cybercriminals, I propose an adjustment: Every month should be Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Every week should be National Data Privacy Week. Cybersecurity must become a year-round priority for consumers and business owners alike — the threat is too real to couch these conversations but for a handful of times each year. In today’s digital age, it often feels like we’re in a perpetual race to keep up. New technologies emerge daily, and we frequently find ourselves navigating uncharted waters without proper guardrails. Cybercriminals exploit these vulnerabilities for profit before conversations about protective measures even begin. Unfortunately, this leaves businesses both small and large as prime targets for cyberattacks. The financial losses incurred by a hack or data breach are just the tip of the iceberg. Reputations are tarnished in the process. Businesses can close as a result. Small-to-medium-sized enterprises are particularly vulnerable due to their limited resources for safeguarding their operations. On the consumer end, a personal data breach can result in a yearslong pursuit to remedy the impacts of identity theft. Many of these attacks take the form of phishing scams, which rely on prize offers, threatened punishments or sheer curiosity to compromise user accounts. These schemes prey on

human psychology, making even the most cautious individuals susceptible. While Cybersecurity Awareness Month and National Data Privacy Week provide a quick, concentrated burst of attention, the truth is that building strong cybersecurity defenses requires more than a few weeks’ worth of energy. The digital threat landscape is dynamic and constantly evolving. Our response must evolve in tandem. It’s encouraging that BBB. org’s search directory saw a considerable uptick in inquiries for cyber insurance. But it requires a collective effort to make cybersecurity an integral part of our daily lives. Password management is an essential component of cyber hygiene. Strong, unique passwords that are updated quarterly is a great place to start. Password managers can be extremely helpful to generate and secure these complex passwords. Regularly updating your software to ensure efficient operations is another crucial step to take, as is providing regular employee training to ensure your workforce is prepared to protect your systems. The war against cybercriminals must be waged on numerous fronts. The cost of complacency can be astronomical. Vigilance can’t be allowed to expire at the end of the month. The Better Business Bureau has built an entire landing page dedicated to protecting businesses and consumers in the digital realm. It contains valuable tools, tips and content to help you and your business manage cyber risks and to stay up to date on best practices. Access it today at www.bbb.org/all/cybersecurity-resources.

In my life, my teachers and parents have shown me how integrity can change my outlook on life. Knowing that they’ve made such an impact on me to carry integrity with me, makes me confident and motivated to continue to impact those who come after me and may be struggling with finding who they are as I was. When joining the workforce, what are your expectations for an employer/organization? As a future speech language pathologist, it is crucial that my employer understands the meaning of a team. Speech Pathologists work with teachers, parents, and other specialists to achieve the end goal. I would love for my employer to place emphasis on teamwork as well as integrity within the collaboration of numerous different specialists.
