Who or what inspires you in your career? Working with people that are excited about what they are accomplishing and have the vision to plan for the next steps. Which famous person, dead or alive, would you want to spend the day with? Jesus. No person has had a greater impact on the world. What is something you believed early in your career that you don’t believe now? That cases are decided on the law rather than emotion. I have learned that this is not always the case. What career advice would you give to your younger self? Have incremental goals for every 3/5/10 years — but also map out what steps — introductions, networking, education, and work experience — you need to reach those goals. Then breakdown deadlines of when/how you will make progress to meet those goals. What got you interested in your current field of work? Interning with Judge Connors in the Cook County Probate division, I was present each day during her court call. I had the opportunity to observe the cases, attorneys, parties then discuss and processed the pending matters with the Judge. I found the work of protecting vulnerable people important. Judge Connors is a graceful, intelligent, generous person and an
amazing Judge. Watching her conduct court and share her expertise was inspiring. What is your management philosophy? Good communication goes a long way. Engage with everyone you work (in office/out of office/staff/colleagues/other professionals) as equal members of your team. I believe people want to do their best but also want to know they are appreciated. Empower people to feel engaged in their work, understand the big picture, and feel confident about why something is done. We may have different parts to play but each person’s work has value and is needed in the bigger picture and to be successful. How do you create a work-life balance? Some things are not negotiable. I work hard but my family comes first. There may be timing adjustments to either sphere, but you need to give full attention to the person, task or project at hand. Sometimes you have quite a bit happening at work, and sometimes it is home. There is certainly give and take, but I have a wonderful supportive husband and partner so we work hard to balance each other’s work and family obligations as a team.
What do you find appealing about your job? Goosmann Law is a very dynamic, growing firm. I have an incredibly talented group of professionals that I am fortunate to work with. There is such enthusiasm for exceeding goals and celebrating accomplishments. I am energized by the support I receive to set and reach my personal goals as well as successfully achieving the firm’s goals. What are you currently working on? Mediation & Arbitration practice in the Alternative Dispute Resolution Department at Goosmann Law Firm. Favorite cause or charity and why? Down Syndrome Alliance of the Midlands. This group is made of amazing leaders and members who provide much needed support through activities, advocacy, parent outreach, education/medical outreach. Leah Jahnke, the executive director, is constantly sharing resources, personal experiences and resources for parents, families, and persons with Down Syndrome. This group has been a wealth of resources and support after we adopted our little one.
How do you define success personally? If you are proud of who you are and what you are doing. Proud of what you would be remembered for.

Schemmer undertakes in Omaha, Council Bluffs and Lincoln are subject to stormwater management requirements, as stipulated under the Clean Water Act and to benefit communities by reducing erosion and impacts to streams and rivers. Each project, he added, is tailored to clients’ goals and budget. So, they are all unique. “Over the past few years, our communities have been a direct witness to the significant impact water from rainstorm events can have on our daily lives,” Hubel said, when asked about their importance. “Left unchecked, stormwater can damage our homes through flooding and pollute our
lakes and rivers. “The change in climate and weather that we have been experiencing are only going to increase the importance of controlling and treating stormwater.” Additionally, recent examples of broad sustainability efforts have included exceeding energy efficiency beyond “the code,” incorporating groundwater recharge into a stormwater management facility, and working with contractors to use local materials. One of Schemmer’s core values is to “utilize sustainable design in all our work, regardless of the project requirements,” he summed up.

In Darin Cielocha’s almost 30 years in the construction industry, the business development executive with Farris Engineering cannot recall a time like the present, with such an influx of new construction and renovation projects competing for resources (people, materials, time). “Usually, when new construction projects are up, renovation/rehab projects look to take a back seat,” he said. “In today’s world, that is not the case.” In fact, Cielocha said Farris has been fortunate to work with many state and local partners in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Wyoming, both Dakotas, Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma. A list of these projects included: Upgrades to UNMC’s utilities at the Omaha campus; University of NebraskaLincoln Andrews Hall HVAC renovation and fire protection upgrades; Iowa Western Community College utility upgrades; VA Omaha Hospital lab renovation and radiology upgrades; and the
replacement of a 1,000-ton chiller for global animal health company Zoetis. As he explained, there is nothing “greatly unique” about these projects. But the projects illustrate, according to Cielocha, how the firm has been faced with upgrading a lot of existing structures throughout the Midwest, including as the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs upgrades and updates five-plus facilities in the Dakotas. “We are part of design teams helping to design new schools and medical facilities in Iowa, Kansas, and New Mexico,” he added. “We are working on Department of Defense projects we cannot even talk about.” And, notably, Cielocha asserted there is “no act of sustainability” that is greater than to renovate or update an existing building. “The University of Nebraska has committed millions of dollars in upgrading and maintaining their existing buildings, without increasing a signal square foot of

occupied space on their campus over the next 25 years,” he said. “That doesn’t even include the new practice facility and other new buildings that the University looks to build new in the next several years. “There is nothing more admirable we

Even within the past 20 years, Senior Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Gina Langel, P.E., said engineering work at the Metropolitan Utilities District has changed significantly – with more focus on innovation. “This is vital to ensure the safety of employees and customers while keeping costs down,” she said. “Engineers must think outside the box to provide solutions that offer the least amount of disruption and inconvenience to customers and the community.” Project-oriented “notables” included M.U.D’s upgrade to its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Plant and its Infrastructure Replacement (IR) Program. The former project involves replacing equipment at a “peak shaving” plant that has been in service since 1975. Such facilities provide additional supply during peak demand periods, reducing the need to buy costly volumes on the spot market. Slated for completion by 2025, the upgrade will reportedly more than double the facility’s daily output. To the latter project, the IR Program addresses the aging infrastructure to support safe drinking water and natural gas – some of which dates back to the 1880s. “To replace these critical, aging gas and water mains, the District significantly increased financial contributions for an enhanced IR program in 2008,” Langel said. “Gas and water rates include monthly fees to provide long-term funding.” She added that, whenever possible, the projects are done in conjunction with road or redevelopment projects or Omaha’s combined sewer separation work to save money and minimize inconvenience. Ultimately, Langel said the increased daily output at the LNG Plant will enhance reliability and save money; a nod to the peak shaving concept, she said during the “polar vortex” last February, there were record gas prices. But plants like the LNG “shielded the District from spending an additional $100 million on gas purchase costs over a oneweek period,” Langel said. Over the near term, the IR program is

reportedly targeting the replacement of 16 miles and 40 miles of water and gas mains, respectively, in 2022. “The program is special as it’s a collaborative effort by infrastructure engineers, designers, operational staff, construction crews, with management and board support that produces our successful program,” she said. Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) Construction Management-Energy Production Manager Megan Walker highlighted how the utility is adding up to 600 megawatts each of solar and natural gas generation for “peaking purposes.” The project is known as Power with Purpose, and she said it’s needed to maintain resiliency, reliability, customer load growth and for future power generation. “PwP enables OPPD to retire our oldest North Omaha Station natural gas-fired units and refuel the remaining units from coal to modernized, more efficient natural gas,” Walker said. “It allows us to integrate more renewable energy into our system, supporting our goal of net-zero carbon production by 2050.” She also noted how OPPD is building three separate transmission lines in Sarpy County, accommodating anticipated load growth as the population grows. “We held several virtual public meetings in 2021 and continue to inform and work with our customers and other stakeholders in the vicinity of our Sarpy Southwest Transmission Project,” she said, adding construction is slated for July with completion by May 2023. Walker underscored how PwP is “one of the largest renewable investments of its kind in the Midwest,” while Media Specialist Jodi Baker reinforced how the Sarpy County project means that people don’t have to worry about keeping the lights on and their homes, schools, and businesses powered as the area grows. Meanwhile, Wildlife and Natural Resource Specialist Chris Vrtiska put a spotlight on its Prairies in Progress. Began in 2018, this process of building pollinator habitats reduces ground maintenance costs and honors its mission, partly, of being an environmentally

friendly energy services provider. “In a joint effort with the Save Our Monarchs Foundation, we initially converted 325 acres of our property to native grasses and other plants,” he said. “We’ve been steadily increasing pollinator habitat around our facilities, as practical. We added six more acres of habitat in 2021, putting us at 331 acres, currently.” Less maintenance means less mowing, using less fertilizer and other chemicals. Instead, Vrtiska referred to a combination of deep rooting grasses and pollinators,
which provides a good habitat for the likes of monarchs and birds, and represent “enormous carbon sinks” (a reference to carbon dioxideabsorbing capacity). Building Services and Operations Manager Jake Farrell noted how all of its facility lighting is being changed to LED, part of a bigger process of modernizing its building over the next 30 years. These efforts, according to Farrell, span the design of new buildings, the incorporation of sustainable efforts in remodels and “life cycle management” of equipment.

This approach shows, Baker added, in its LEED-certified Omaha Service Center. Features include solar panels, waterefficient landscaping, a water-to-water heat pump and solar tank. It’s also been adding hybrid and electric vehicles at both the Omaha and Elkhorn Service Centers and organization wide — to the tune of 70 vehicles — from hybrid passenger cars, SUVs and a pickup, to plug-in hybrid bucket trucks and all-electric cars. The likes of electric forklifts and utility carts have also been added.

In all, Baker said OPPD’s portfolio is approximately 40% renewable energy, and growing. “We’re working toward a goal of net-zero carbon by 2050,” she said. In part, OPPD is exploring various “pathways to decarbonization,” another way of referring to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions or the “carbon footprint.”
Funding Fuels Progress
The irony of President Joe Biden’s scheduled Pittsburgh visit in late January (to discuss his infrastructure spending plan, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as IIJA) occurring just hours shy of the collapse of a major local bridge, is not lost on anyone. Well before the latest headline-grabbing infrastructure-oriented disaster, local experts weighed in on the implications of what is being characterized as the “largest longterm investment in our infrastructure and competitiveness in nearly a century.” “The federal Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act will have a significant positive impact on our communities,” said Schemmer’s Hubel. “These funds are going to allow work to proceed on improvements to our roads, bridges and utilities that have been deferred due to a lack of funding. The better our infrastructure, the healthier and safer it will make our communities.” The firm, he added, is looking forward with city, state and federal agencies to see these projects to fruition. While Cielocha of Farris applauded the plan and its impact in the long run, he expressed uncertainty about “how we are going to be able to tackle all the things that need to get done in the next couple of years.” “We need to capture the wealth of experience that continues to exist in the workforce and develop the next generation of design professionals and engineers,” he said. “That is where the next ‘pinch point’ lies.” M.U.D.’s Langel approached the IIJA through the lens of Congress signaling its intention to eliminate lead water services lines through the bipartisan infrastructure act and American Rescue Plan. “Lead service lines, owned by the homeowner, may threaten water quality to individual homes,” she said. “M.U.D. is committed to working with our partners in city, county, and state government to ensure those federal dollars, intended to replace lead service pipes, are used for that purpose.” OPPD’s Baker said the funding would greatly help the power industry as a whole:

According to WhiteHouse.gov information, based on formula funding alone, Nebraska
could receive $2 billion for federal aid highway apportioned programs and $225 million for bridge replacement and repairs over five years. Within that time frame, the state would reportedly be on the receiving end of $186 million in funds for public transportation improvements. Other notable investments include building a plug-in EV charger network, broadband coverage expansion, cyberattack and weatherization protections, water safety (i.e., the aforementioned elimination of lead service lines and pipes), and airport infrastructure development.

Client: Children’s Hospital & Medical Center Project: Children’s Hospital Hubbard Center for Children

The Children’s Hospital & Medical Center is a regional pediatric hospital in Omaha, NE. The new Hubbard Center for Children doubles the programmable space of the hospital and expands the Emergency Department, the Surgery Suite, PICU, NICU, Central Sterile and Radiology. The Hubbard Center for Children also provides a new dining and cafeteria for the whole campus, new meeting space for learning and continuing education, new chapel space, a new patient check-in/check-out, new outdoor gardens, and solarium to enhance the Center’s healing environment. The construction of the new hospital tower consists of a 427,000 square feet, nine-story structural steel frame and concrete slabs on metal deck with a unitized curtain wall envelope that ties into the existing hospital and specialty pediatric clinic on seven floors. The mechanical systems include a new Central Utility Plant that services the new tower, the existing hospital and the Specialty Pediatric Clinic. The patient rooms and public spaces are mechanically tempered with new Air Handling Units utilizing chilled water, steam, heating hot water and controlled by a building automation system. The electrical systems include power, emergency power, critical power, security systems (CCTV and access control), nurse call, building automation and fire alarm. The project was procured under an Integrated Project Delivery contract. The group worked collaboratively through design and preconstruction to provide real-time estimating and target value design to create over $50 million in cost savings and 40 days in schedule duration savings with no impact to the project’s program.

Erica (Sunny) Mullen, PE, of Alfred Benesch & Company, has been named the 2022 Young Professional of the Year by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Nebraska. Mullen, a professional engineer and project manager on Benesch’s engineering team, started as a student intern in 2010. She earned her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Rutgers University and, after practicing on the east coast, rejoined Benesch in 2019. Her skills include transportation and water/wastewater engineering, hydrologic & hydraulic analysis, MS4 compliance, construction engineering and funding assistance. She leads project teams, develops solutions and is a role model to those in or aspiring to be in the industry. Mullen’s goal throughout her career has been to make a difference in communities by providing meaningful solutions. In less than a year, she contracted over $1 million in project work Mullen and grew Benesch’s Omaha civil infrastructure engineering group, including storm and sanitary sewer, water, hydraulics and hydrology work. She volunteers her time with Special Olympics, Alzheimer’s Association and the Future City Competition program where she engages with females interested in engineering and planning. Mullen says, “I’m passionate about Future City. To see the wonderment in the faces of future engineers is very fulfilling and humbling.” She is involved in industry associations and her excellence has been recognized by client nomination and election to the American Public Works Association (APWA) Nebraska Chapter Executive Board in 2021 and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 10 New Faces of Civil Engineering in 2017.
Steve D. Kathol receives Durham Award
Steve Kathol, President and CEO of Schemmer, is this year’s recipient of the Charles Durham Achievement Award given by ACEC Nebraska. The award honors Charles Durham’s leadership in the engineering profession and his community stewardship through civic involvement. Durham served as chairman and CEO of Henningson, Durham and Richardson (HDR), the Omaha-based international engineering and architectural firm. As President and CEO, Kathol is responsible for leadership, strategic vision and building corporate culture across all Schemmer offices. His leadership approach and philosophies focus on an open-book management style, encouraging every employee to understand the company’s vision, strategy and financial progress, thus creating a culture of ownership and empowering employees to go above and beyond to help Schemmer clients reach their goals. He fosters and supports a sense of community both inside and outside the walls of the organization. Kathol has served in several leadership roles since joining the firm in 1994. He was named bridge department manager in 2001, elected to the Schemmer board of directors in 2006, named transportation group leader in 2010, and elected Schemmer Kathol president and CEO in 2014. He is Schemmer’s fifth president and CEO since the firm’s inception in 1959. Steve is active in ACEC Nebraska, having served as state director in 2010, president in 2013-2014 and national director in 2015-2016. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and served as the Nebraska Chapter President in 2006. Steve is also a member of the Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers. Schemmer encourages its professionals to connect with causes they care about. Steve exemplifies this in his commitment to the Boys Town Booster Club and his work as a board member with both the Boy Scouts of America Mid-America Council and the ACE Mentor Program of Greater Omaha. Kathol is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science in Structural Engineering. In partnership with Monolith Materials, Olsson developed and calibrated a completely new groundwater flow model for the area around the proposed expansion site for Nebraska’s first commercial carbon black facility, Olive Creek. Using spatial and vertical refinement, Olsson produced an extremely detailed subregional model that accounts for the highly varied geography in the area.
For 25 years, the City of Lincoln used the biogas produced at its Theresa Street Water Resource Recovery Facility (TSWRRF) to produce heat and electricity for in-facility use. Because of its age and condition, it continually needed repairs. This project repurposes TSWRRF’s biogas into a revenue-generating asset, anticipated to produce 100 billion British thermal units of renewable natural gas annually, the equivalent of about 875,000 gallons of gasoline.
The Zorinsky Lake Water Quality Basin 2 Dam provides essential water cleansing duties while providing recreational opportunities and enhancing aquatic and wildlife habitat. The HDR team transformed the dilapidated creek into a beautiful waterway, creating a 20-acre reservoir and 70-acre parkland, surrounded by new development and designed with a holistic strategic to serve the necessary water quality functions, providing flood protection, expanding and improving surrounding watershed habitats, and creating future recreational opportunities for the community.

Farris Engineering transformed a traditional university library built in the 1960s into a modern learning environment designed for student interaction, both inside and outside the facility. The multi-story space was renovated to serve as a beacon to the campus, keeping the large amount of exterior glazing that allows natural daylight in, while allowing the interactive indoor environment to shine out to the surrounding plaza.
When water quality began deteriorating, the Village of Mead hired Olsson to conduct a water supply and treatment study. Olsson engineers looked into increasing levels of arsenic that were approaching the maximum contaminant level allowed by the EPA. High concentrations of manganese and iron were infiltrating the water supply, resulting in quality issues throughout the nearly 100-year-old system.
Omaha’s first protected bikeway, Market-to-Midtown, between 10th Street and Turner Boulevard on Harney Street, is open for an 18-month pilot period. Bike Walk Nebraska and Metro Smart Cities will collect data and feedback to determine the viability of more and longer bikeways in Omaha.

The new Hubbard Center for Children is the most visible part of Children’s Hospital, fronting Omaha’s busiest corridor and integrating architecturally with the existing facilities. The $450 million, 427,000 square-foot expansion offers a wide array of new and improved features including an expanded emergency department with seven new operating rooms, a one-of-a-kind imaging center, newborn intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, and cardiac care center.
Historic Nebraska flooding in mid-March 2019 resulted in power outages to the City of Lincoln’s well fields, which led to a loss of water production. Olsson provided emergency assistance and managed a two-year-long follow-up project to restore the well field, bring horizontal collector well (HCW) 90-1 into service, and fortify the well field against future flooding.

In 2016, the City of Omaha invested in modern traffic signal and communication infrastructure improvements and hired a team of engineers to study, design, construct, and implement improvements across Omaha. Felsburg Holt & Ullevig was part of the team, providing on-call design and operations support for a five-year citywide signal system upgrade.
This project merged the Burt Street and California Street utility plants into a single system that delivers essential capacity to the campus and other customers in the area. Expanding the California utility plant involved adding a 3,000-ton chiller, a 6,000-ton cooling tower, and additional support equipment.

The $1.5 billion, 14-mile Council Bluffs Interstate System Improvement Program includes the state’s the first dual, divided freeway; its largest construction project, first tiered environmental permitting, first robust critical path method schedule; and the Iowa DOT’s first project using a program manager. HDR developed program updates and construction alerts, monitored a construction hotline, created graphics and easy-to-understand annual reports, and briefed elected officials on progress.
This project redeveloped an underutilized urban setting property to produce a safe, orderly parking lot for the Creighton University students. The new lot helps replace on-campus parking currently eliminated by construction of a nearby undergraduate residence hall.

OPPORTUNITIES AND TALENT IN NEBRASKA Opportunities abound for young engineers in Nebraska, said Lance C. Pérez, dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering, and students receive plenty of support in their transition to work. For instance, the college has a career services department that works with students to prepare them for careers in engineering and with companies interested in hiring. “Outside of encouraging our students to attend campus career fairs during both the fall and spring semesters at UNL and on the Scott Campus in Omaha, it’s important for the college of engineering to establish and maintain partnerships with the industry whether it’s through internship opportunities, senior design and capstone courses, or campus activities to expose and educate students on various employment options available to them,” said Phillip Carter, external/community relations coordinator for the college. “We’re extremely fortunate to have great relationships with companies always looking to hire Nebraska engineers. Industry partners like Kiewit hire more engineers from UNL than any other engineering degree program in North America. Union Pacific and Valmont, to name a few additional Nebraska companies, are also heavily involved in sponsoring student success programs and hiring students for internships. Students are also encouraged to frequently engage with Handshake, an online resource dedicated to posting jobs and internships for students to apply.” The college supports engineering workforce development in many ways. Pérez said faculty and researchers have begun to move into the new Engineering Research Center that replaces the circa1984 “link” facility between the Scott Engineering Center and Nebraska Hall. This facility will contribute to developing a prominent workforce by enhancing research and development within the college, added Pérez. The new facility features approximately 87,000 square feet for research labs and will also house the Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Electrical and Computer Engineering departments. UNL College of Engineering Director of Engineering Scholar Programs Bonnie Shuda said a new program provides students with scholarship funding but also career development opportunities in the form of internships, weekly meetings with mentors and study abroad.
“The Kiewit Scholars Program is an annual investment by Kiewit, in partnership with the UNL College of Engineering, to develop Complete Engineers®,” she said. “These students, a select group of 10 per year, are chosen for the program for already demonstrating extraordinary leadership and technical skills and now as engineering students at UNL, they will have an opportunity to study abroad, take courses specifically structured for leadership and career development, and network with world-class engineers thanks to this unique program.” The payoffs are evident. Nebraska engineering students have won the prestigious ACEC National Scholar of the Year for three of the last four years as selected by the ACEC College of Fellows Scholarship Committee, said Clarence E. Waters, Aaron Douglas Professor of Architectural Engineering with UNL’s Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction. “Nebraska Architectural Engineering (AE), part of the Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction, is very grateful for the opportunity that these ACEC Scholarships have provided for our students. All three of the top ACEC Scholars were AE students. Nebraska AE is a five-year program with elevated grade requirements. These requirements draw top-quality students like our ACEC Scholars,” he said. The success of these students in being selected for these scholarships is directly related to the connection that Durham School has with the building industry, Waters said. “Industry is very involved in many ways and provides numerous and excellent internships. I am a very lucky man to be able to work with these and all of the Nebraska AE students and the industry that supports us,” Waters said. The Scholar of the Year receives $10,000. Eligibility requirements include being an entering junior, senior, or fifth-year student and pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or in an accredited land-surveying program. The monetary aspect of the award has had a significant impact this year. Graduate school comes with higher tuition rates, so the scholarship lifts some of this responsibility. This allowed me to focus more time on coursework, student organizations, and internship experience during the year. Part of the scholarship was also receiving the chance to attend the ACEC Fall Conference in Marco Island, Florida, in October to officially receive the award. At this conference, I was able to hear from keynote speakers on leadership, current industry trends and more, while also getting the chance to interact with executives at companies native to Nebraska and across the country. How was your transition from the COE to working full-time? Why did you choose to stay in Nebraska? I cannot speak fully on the transition to full-time employment, but I have made the decision to stay in Nebraska with Morrissey Engineering. There are ample opportunities in Nebraska for a valuable work experience that allows individuals to work on innovative projects alongside leaders in the industry. What advice would you give to a current engineering student about transitioning into employment in the industry? My advice to current students is to take advantage of all
resources that surround you. Student organizations are a great way to learn more about topics that interest you most and connect with current students, alumni and professionals in the industry. These connections continue as you transition out of school. I’d also recommend that students gain a variety of experiences in internships. Whether it’s different jobs or roles or different project types within the same company, the breadth of knowledge allows for more growth in the transition to full-time employment. What could you share about the hiring process? The University of Nebraska has many opportunities that allow students to build relationships with firms across the area. The Durham School career fair annually brings in hundreds of companies that want to hire students for internship and full-time opportunities. The experience I gained in a variety of internships gave me the opportunity to establish these relationships and ease some of the stress that comes with finding full-time employment following graduation. What gets you excited about engineering? Engineering allows individuals and teams to have a significant impact on the buildings around them and the world as we know it. As new technologies are discovered and invented, engineers can implement these into daily life and improve their own communities. The camaraderie of the industry improves the work done by engineers. I won the ACEC Scholar of the Year award in 2018. Receiving this scholarship gave me the opportunity to travel to the Annual ACEC Conference that was held in Las Vegas the year I went. I was able to network with engineers in many different industries throughout the United States. Receiving this scholarship allowed me to fully focus on my master’s year project without the need to take out student loans that I’d be responsible for post college or working unmanageable hours during my master’s studies. How was your transition from the COE to working full-time? Why did you choose to stay in Nebraska? The transition from college to working full time was quite seamless in my case. I had been interning with Morrissey Engineering for two and a half years prior to starting full time, which helped a lot with the transition. I chose to stay in Nebraska and at Morrissey Engineering because I am passionate about development in Omaha. Morrissey Engineering allows me to have a small part in growing the Omaha community. What advice would you give to a current engineering student about transitioning into employment in the industry? I would advise students transitioning to full time to not be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions and fully understanding the work
you are doing is the best way to learn and make you a well-rounded engineer. I was intimidated to ask questions at first but quickly became comfortable enough to understand that I’m still learning, and questions are expected and encouraged. Asking questions shows the people you are working with that you care and are eager to become the best engineer you can be. What could you share about the hiring process? The University of Nebraska/The Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction sets students up in a way that makes the hiring process extremely simple. The job placement rate from the architectural engineering program is 100%. We were guided from our freshman year on how to interact with industry and how to apply for jobs. The university made me feel like I was extremely prepared to move to a full-time position, and I had no issues discussing full-time employment with all my previous internship jobs as well as new companies that I had met at the career fair. What gets you excited about engineering? I am passionate about sustainable building design and Omaha’s ever-expanding development. My job allows me to merge those two ideas together. I’m excited to work on more sustainable projects throughout the metro and explore new technologies that will help create a healthy built environment in Omaha. I hope I can one day say I played an important role in developing our community.

The ACEC Scholarship allowed me to go back to school to receive a master’s degree in architectural engineering. This scholarship allowed me to stay focused on school and develop a passion for mechanical engineering while not having to worry about how I was going to pay for this higher education. How was your transition from the COE to working full-time? Why did you choose to stay in Nebraska? My transition from college to working full-time has been as smooth as possible amidst a global pandemic. I was lucky enough to intern for the company that hired me full time, Olsson, for the two years leading up to that transition. I chose to stay in Nebraska because I developed connections while interning at Olsson in Omaha and wanted to grow with the company and the people. What advice would you give to a current engineering student about transitioning into employment in the industry? Advice I would give to a current engineering student about the transition from employment into the industry would be to make sure you stay involved. Staying involved in activities hosted by work is
crucial to networking, and make sure you stay involved in your own hobbies and activities outside of work. Another piece of advice I would share is to not be afraid to take on tasks and learn as you progress while taking on those tasks. This is a great way to learn, but do not forget to ask questions when stuck. What could you share about the hiring process? During the hiring process, I learned that grades matter but not as much as one’s soft skills and the people you might know. Having a connection on the inside of the company can go a long way. With that said, interning at the company you want to get hired by can really aid with the hiring process. Just remember to have the conversation early with your employer about being hired on full time to eliminate surprises and reduce complications as graduation approaches. What gets you excited about engineering? I get excited about engineering when I start to think about all the communities I can help in Nebraska and in the world with constructing key buildings within these communities. Helping create school systems, community centers, or health care facilities is what brought me to engineering in the first place, and I cannot wait to give back to local communities. We are looking for graduate civil engineers with little or no experience beyond school, and also registered professionals. We have positions available in our roadway and our bridge design groups. We have a need for drafting technicians with a two-year degree and also seasoned CAD operators with expertise in civil/site design. We have openings available in our survey department and among our field inspection staff for both young and seasoned employees. Finally, our architecture practice has a need for both graduate/registered architects and technicians with BIM modeling experience. How are you hiring? HGM is utilizing a variety of methods to connect with candidates. Job-search websites such as Indeed, Monster and Handshake are our primary means of finding candidates, but we are also using LinkedIn to make connections. These sites produce a steady stream of applicants, so screening properly is critical to managing the flow. Candidates who are successfully screened are then evaluated using an assessment tool that indicates some basic strengths they possess. Two levels of online and/or live interviews are followed by an employment offer for the most successful candidates.
What skills are needed, hard to find, most desired? Typically, the most successful candidates for engineering positions will possess a high attention to detail and an ability to recognize the importance of standardized procedures and design policies. These are important traits and, fortunately, most individuals who enter a technical field possess them. HGM looks beyond this for candidates who are naturally curious and continue to ask questions and even look for things to learn and ways to help outside the boundaries of their assignment. We look for candidates who are relentless problem-solvers that will not wait for someone else to resolve their problem for them. What else are you considering when looking for the next engineer to join your organization? HGM looks for candidates who are proactive. This is an oftenused buzzword, but in our case, it refers to someone who can put themselves in our client’s shoes and understand what they need before the client does – then deliver it. We look for people who are positive and confident, who are also able to maintain a level of humility; these are the candidates who best fit the culture of our firm, which we fiercely protect as the valuable asset that it is.

JORDAN TALMON JEO Consulting Group Water Resources Intern (Lincoln) What makes you excited about your job? What makes me excited about my job is the variety of projects I have had the opportunity to work on. From dam breach modeling to designing roadways, I have been exposed to a variety of fields in engineering. I feel, as I continue in my job, that these exposures will only increase and make me more excited about the future of my career. What also excites me is the opportunity to work with and learn from other engineers. I feel like I learn a lot from them not only regarding the engineering process, but also general life experience. What makes you excited about our industry? The most exciting thing about our industry is its constant evolution and the way we can use the engineering philosophies in our personal lives. Overall, the engineering industry is changing and getting more advanced. Being able to follow that progress in real time is fascinating. The other thing that makes me excited about our industry is the ways that I, and everyone else, can apply engineering philosophies to our everyday life. This can include choosing more
efficient appliances for our homes, engineering our yards/land to reflect the more natural world to help native species, and many other ideas. Why did you choose to get your engineering degree in Nebraska? I chose to get my engineering degree at University of Nebraska-Lincoln for two main reasons: first, they have a great history in the engineering department, and second was that it was close to home. The engineering history at Nebraska is vast and covers a variety of engineering fields. The College of Engineering is constantly innovating to make classes better, expanding on facilities to use more state-of-the-art equipment, and really want their students to succeed by giving them a variety of resources. While I could have gone to Iowa State, Missouri, or a variety of other universities and gotten a great education there, I felt that I could still get a great education while staying closer to home if I went to Nebraska.

What makes you excited about our industry? The need for engineers is extremely high right now and there is a lot of work to be done. I am excited about all the future opportunities and technology improvements within our
field. Our industry has continued to advance and stay up with technology which allows us to provide solutions in clear and understandable ways. What makes you excited about living in Nebraska? The people of Nebraska are our best resource and I love that I get to work with them on bettering our state. I love the difference of working in western Nebraska versus eastern Nebraska and being able to see all portions of our great state. MYERS SUPPORTS COMPANY GROWTH THROUGH NEW INITIATIVES

Running through a list of Lexie Myers’ accomplishments, it’s hard to believe how many major projects she’s completed in just two years. The fact that much of it happened during a global pandemic is just all the more impressive. Since joining Medical Solutions, a nationwide staffing source for travel nurses, Myers has rolled out or been at the forefront of talent management, DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion), revamping the company’s core values and pandemic response. Not to mention keeping up with the firm’s explosive growth in headcount, which reached 1,300 internal positions last year alone. But ask the Papillion native about this admirable roster of wins and she merely defers the credit to her team. “For my team, it’s been about providing great support to our growing internal organization,” she said. “The business has grown a lot, which can be really awesome, but also comes with some growing pains, too. While all of our clients and nurses are the ones who have the most demanding roles, we’ve been trying to support them in the best way we can.”
Managing Growth Joining the firm in 2019 was a study in good timing as the company was bent on expanding its HR team to help deal with its rapid growth. Myers’ natural leadership skills and desire to serve all employees fairly and equitably pushed her to the forefront of developing a system by which employees could plan their careers and receive regular feedback about their development. “All of our talent processes, goal-setting conversations, talent reviews, work succession, all those types of conversations really kicked off in a kind of 1.0 version in 2019,” she said. “That initiative continued through 2020 and my team still leads that today. That’s been something that from the ground up has been a key focus in my time here.” Developing work-arounds to deal with pandemic conditions has been another major milestone in her short time with the company. Some of the adjustments made during
that time have been retained as they’ve proven to be a better mousetrap for attracting and retaining quality employees. “We already had a remote sales team in one of our divisions and we also have offices in other areas outside of Omaha,” she said. “But it was absolutely a huge shift to take our Omaha headquarters and have a lot of those team members work from home. That all feels like the normal course of business now, but it was definitely a big shift in 2020. “Staying on top of remote and hybrid workers is a huge opportunity for us, by helping leaders be great at leading teams remotely. Lots of leaders grew up with business meetings being with someone in person or observing performance when you’re all together. There’s a little spin on leading remote and hybrid teams and still being able to create engagement.”
Eyes on the Future Never one to rest on her laurels, Myers has already identified the next hill to climb in the ongoing effort to create the most ideal working environment possible. “Culture is a top priority at Medical Solutions,” she said. “Cultivating a culture people really want to be a part of is a huge focus for our team. That includes things like enhancing our capabilities around succession in workforce planning, especially as the company continues to grow. The phrase we use is, ‘Being able to put the right people in the right roles at the right time,’ and as we continue to grow, that’s going to be increasingly important.” Myers received a degree in business administration and management from Midland University in Fremont and a masters degree in managerial communications with PRESENTING SPONSOR an emphasis in HR from Bellevue University.

The frequency and severity of cyber-attacks are growing every year. Employee behaviors are still one of the leading causes of security incidents, according to Taleena Stanbrough, director of people operations at Five Nines. “Employee training is a key component of a well-rounded security strategy and one that far too few businesses actually invest in,” she said. “There is more to security awareness training than just spotting email phishing attempts.” “Train your employees on the use of password management software— [such as] 1Password, Bit Warden, and Lastpass — and mandate via policy and training that they use one,” said Blaine Kahle, director of technology at Five Nines. “Provide one to all employees as a cost of [doing] business. Compromised passwords due to password re-use is a frequent cause of initial breach entry points, and educating employees on how to address that issue is important. Combining good password hygiene with multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all internet-facing services will address a substantial portion of initial breach risk.”
Cyber Law
The reality for businesses is that a data breach or cyber incident is a matter of “when” not “if.” Beyond technical specialists and project leaders, attorneys help businesses respond to intrusions by determining their duties to their clients and ensuring they’re being responsive to state and federal laws protecting data.

Because complying with these laws is challenging, and data breaches are more and more common, these types of jobs are becoming commonplace both at law firms and in-house at companies. Juris Doctor students in UNL’s College of Law can specialize in any part of the Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law program, including cybersecurity, according to Elsbeth Magilton, executive director of the Space, Cyber and Telecom Law Program. “We also have an LLM program for practicing attorneys who return to school to specialize in a specific area of the law,” she said. “We offer a range of classes, including several classes on legal and regulatory issues in technology, as well as specific classes relating to cybersecurity law and policy issues,” said Gus Hurwitz, the menard director of the Nebraska Governance and Technology Center [NGTC] and co-director of the Space, Cyber and Telecom Law Program. “Most of our classes are geared towards law students, but we are working to increase opportunities for non-law students to enroll, as well.” Cybersecurity as a specific field continues to grow at a rapid pace, both on the technical side and the legal side. But the bigger trend on the legal side is recognizing that cybersecurity issues are everywhere so many lawyers need to have some rudimentary understanding of cybersecurity. “It’s hard to imagine being a lawyer today without occasionally coming across

a cybersecurity issue, even if you don’t specialize in the field,” Hurwitz said. “You really need to know at least enough to recognize when you need to bring a specialist in to work with you and your clients.” Cybersecurity is part of many areas of law, and it is changing rapidly in all of these areas. There are state laws dealing with data breaches and consumer privacy, regulatory rules governing how banks and health care providers handle customer data, challenging issues in criminal law involving encryption, and vast international law issues. “The role of cybersecurity in all of these areas is quite unsettled and rapidly evolving,” Hurwitz said. Businesses must be responsive to local and national consumer protection statutes and other data protection rules. “In general, as citizens, your personal identifying information is protected,” Magilton said. “If a company who holds that data experiences a breach, they have to inform you and in some cases they may have additional responsibilities to remedy the situation. There is a wide array of rules state to state, with new concerns and ideas being brought up consistently.”
Cybersecurity Careers
Five Nines’ Stanbrough said the first step to starting a career in cybersecurity is to understand what businesses expect from those who manage that segment of IT. “All businesses are ultimately focused on avoiding security incidents that expose

their clients, employees, and proprietary business information, but there are many other expectations,” she said. “Many industries have security standards with which they must comply, and are required to provide documentation for audits, and expect communicated training and best practices for their teams. Consider your strengths and how they apply to the needs of the profession.” Before embarking on a cybersecurity career, seek to better understand what educational institution will help best meet goals for the career desired. Second, stay up to date on current events in the world of cybersecurity — new methods of attack, tools for protection, and best practices are everchanging. “The experience required will largely depend on the level of the role for which you are applying,” Stanbrough said. “Don’t discount the benefit you can get from experience in a role that isn’t specifically cybersecurity-focused. The most skilled cybersecurity professionals have a vast understanding of all aspects of IT and where vulnerabilities exist within it.” Southeast Community College (SCC) offers a cybersecurity focus within the computer information technology program. “This focus was developed as part of a grant awarded by the National Science Foundation in 2014 and prepares a CIT graduate to enter the workforce as a network or security technician,” CIT instructor and cybersecurity student advisor Norman Stimbert said.

Those with cybersecurity skills enjoy an outstanding employment outlook. “Positions include security technicians, firewall engineers, data analysts, security architects, and vulnerability assessment analysts with many of these roles paying six figures,” Stimbert said. “Applicants can validate their cybersecurity skill sets to employers through education and training, certifications, and work experience.” Employers are not finding enough people to fill cybersecurity openings. “In 2021, it was estimated that the United States employs well over 1.25 million people in cybersecurity roles, but it has 300,000 to 400,000 unfilled positions due to a lack of qualified individuals,” Stimbert said. “Worldwide, that number is expected to go to over three million openings by 2025. “Those interested in a career in cybersecurity need to possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, understand networking and digital devices, enjoy the ever changing areas of

technology, and most importantly aspire for perfection. In cybersecurity, you need to be right every time. The attacker only needs to be right once.” Banks have the highest level of security among critical U.S. industries — including energy and telecommunications — and the most stringent regulatory requirements, according to Kara Heideman, director of communications and marketing for the Nebraska Bankers Association, which with its cybersecurity partner, SBS CyberSecurity, offers an online cybersecurity certification that is tailored specifically to banking needs. “This unique series of role-based cybersecurity certifications provides industry-specific information security awareness and risk management skills,” she said. The certifications prepare students and their financial institutions for cybersecurity threats and regulations and create confidence with examiners and auditors. Each course is tailored to specific roles within an institution. The Executive Learning Path prepares students to lead organizations. The Manager Learning Path prepares students to mature and manage an institution’s information security program, build a comprehensive vendor management program, and build a valuable and repeatable business continuity plan. According to a Forbes HR Council post, 74% of companies recently surveyed said that the skills shortage is impacting their business, including the ability to keep their information secure. “There is a high demand for cybersecurity professionals, so get started and ask many questions,” said Frank Hulscher, IT auditor at SBS CyberSecurity. Terry Kuxhaus, senior information security consultant with SBS, said that with the wide range of career paths in cybersecurity, the opportunities are endless. “Get an education and pursue certifications, make connections with others as they are invaluable, and stay current with trends and current events in cybersecurity,” Kuxhaus said. The cybersecurity, information security, digital forensics, and incident response fields are ever-changing, and cybersecurity professionals must evolve with them. “The advice I could give to someone interested in pursuing [a cybersecurity career] is to get comfortable with being uncomfortable,” said Kelley Hesse, information security consultant and DFIR analyst at SBS. “Take every opportunity you can to learn, even if you think it will be challenging.” “Don’t be afraid to fail or make mistakes, but make sure that you pay attention to what those mistakes or failures are teaching you,” said Jon Waldman, co-founder of SBS. “Some lessons are more significant, some smaller, but overall, they’ll always teach you an important lesson.”
Cyber Liability Insurance
According to UNL’s Hurwitz, much of the burden for cybersecurity is being placed on businesses to secure systems that often can’t be secured. “If you’re a business and you’re not
thinking about security, you’re planning to be breached,” he said. “Any business today should have commercial insurance that covers cyber incidents. Basic cyber hygiene, the term for safe online practices, is the best protection.” “Each cyber liability policy is a little different, so it’s important for people to understand what they’re buying,” said Megan Hatch, commercial risk consultant with UNICO Group. Some typical policies cover things like ransomware, extortion, social engineering, and data breach. Small companies face the same cyber threats as large corporations, the main difference being limits of coverage, depending on exposure. For instance, a health care company may need a $5 million or $10 million limit, whereas another firm might only have a $1 million limit. “We’ve seen an increase in attacks to small and mid-sized firms over the past year to 18 months because bigger companies are putting more protections in place to try to avoid some of these hacks, and that costs a lot of money,” Hatch said. What a cyber liability policy does not cover depends on the way the policy is written. For instance, some types of thirdparty losses and some business incomes may not be covered, although firms can get policies to cover them. Cyber liability insurance is changing rapidly. Not only have cyber claims increased in frequency, but the size of payment per claim has increased. “We’re [also] seeing more types of losses,” Hatch said. “Five to ten years ago you thought of cyber insurance as covering a data breach. While those still occur, we’re seeing new and different kinds of losses. Hackers have improved on how they’re getting into systems and obtaining money.” Many insurance companies have requirements firms must meet in order to be insured. The big one is multifactor authentication. Carriers also place a high importance on phishing training — training employees to watch for
suspicious emails. Roughly $2,000 to $5,000 a year is fairly standard for a cyber liability policy, but UNICO sees policies as large as
$100,000 to $200,000 a year. “It’s in the best interest of all business owners to know what risks there are and how to prevent them,” Hatch said.

A NOVEL IDEA BOOKSTORE DIVERSIFIES OFFERINGS A Novel Idea Bookstore owner Cinnamon Dokken was charmed by the Icelandic custom of reading books and eating chocolate all night on Christmas Eve. “I thought that sounded fantastic,” Dokken said. “Hmm ... we have books. How could we offer chocolate as well?” So, she set out to do just that in November of 2021. She found a small business to make a chocolate bar mold featuring the store’s logo, which includes its “feline employees.” Then she went to Gaylene Steinbach, owner of Lulubee Artisanal Chocolates. “I love working with other locally-owned businesses,” Dokken said. “Gaylene makes lovely little bars for us — both milk and dark chocolate.”
Keeping it Fresh The custom chocolate bars weren’t the only additions in 2021. Over the summer, the shop closed down for about six weeks while the team input inventory into a new custom database that integrates a point-of-sale system with inventory management. “Using the new system and the new bargain cabinet outside the shop, we’re able to manage a better flow of inventory,” Dokken said. “The stock in the store is fresher, and customers have the chance to purchase great
books from the outside cabinet at a bargain price. The system also helps us target our buying more effectively and better manage what we spend on inventory.”
Humble Beginnings Having the inventory, space and support to implement these changes was only a dream in 1991 when Dokken and Bryan Peterson opened the bookstore. Both were seniors at University of Nebraska-Lincoln when the store opened in a small consignment space in Bargain Barn on “O” Street. Both worked at The Daily Nebraskan, UNL’s student newspaper. “We put the store name up for a vote in the newsroom, and the writers went for A Novel Idea,” Dokken said. “We had the booth at Bargain Barn for a while. Then we found a space for rent that had no heat — but being college students, we were used to being poor, tired, and cold.” The new store was in a basement that had been abandoned for so long there were dead birds on the floor. Dokken and Peterson cobbled together shelves out of wood UNL had discarded. A year later, the store moved to its current location at 118 N. 14th Street. “We didn’t even have the first month’s rent in the bank when we signed the lease,” Dokken said. “We really hustled the first month, and the

second month. We were selling books as we were moving them, but there’s something to be said for having blind ambition and not really knowing what you’re getting into.” After a couple of years, Dokken bought out her business partner, who went on to pursue other interests. The bookstore has five human and two feline staffers. The felines are officially titled customer service representatives, and they are the most popular, Dokken said. “I have a great crew,” she said. “I’ve always been fortunate to have wonderful people to work with, but the staff I have now is perhaps the best I’ve ever had. Katherine Bergstrom, my store manager, has been with me for 27 of my 30 years in business.”
New Beginnings In 2001, Dokken joined with other tenants on the block to form the Parrish Project and bought the building in which their businesses were located. They renovated the second floor, which is now an incubator for startups, art studios, and other small businesses. “We worked hard to aggressively pay down the loan,” Dokken said. “Having done that, I didn’t have a rent payment to contend with last year, which helped tremendously.” When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the store closed to walk-in traffic and did sales by appointment to limit the number of people inside. It offered curbside pick-up, and Dokken began making deliveries as the
“Book Fairy,” complete with wings, wand, and a dragon on the dashboard of her Honda. The store partnered with other local woman-owned businesses to create and sell Book Bag Care Packages — reusable totes containing books and treats. Chocolate came from Lulubee, Bella Spa & Apothecary created a special blend of bath salts, local artist Sharon Ohmberger made tea saucers for the store, and honey came from Valhalla Bee Farm. “We delivered lots of those for Mother’s Day, and they’re still popular gifts,” Dokken said. A Novel Idea participates in several events throughout the year, like Children’s Book Week in May. Its Thank You Thursday program donates a percentage of every Thursday’s sales to a charitable organization. Last year, the store started a program for children in need, through which customer contributions help the store donate Kids’ Book Bag Care Packages to organizations like Friendship Home, Voices of Hope, and CEDARS. Dokken, an English major with minors in history and sociology, graduated from UNL in 1991. “The bookstore is a dream that materialized before I realized that I had it,” she said. “My dad had his own dental practice and my mom, a former English teacher, opened her own perennial plant business, greenhouse, and floral shop. I grew up with those role models, so being self-employed didn’t scare me.” Other plans for 2022 include implementing a newsletter and offering a catalog of collectable books.
