HORSEPOWER TODAY HITTING A STRIDE WITH FRACTIONAL TWIST ON ADVISORY SERVICES

Horsepower Today

HITTING A STRIDE WITH FRACTIONAL TWIST ON ADVISORY SERVICES

As many small business owners know, building the right team to meet goals is challenging. Since jumping out of the gate in 2020, Horsepower Today has embodied the changing nature of work with a simple solution: fractional talent.

Missing Communication

While working in public accounting, CPA Brooke Pauley recalled how she and her attorney husband had mutual clients and a dedication to service.

“We are always proactive for our clients, not reactive,” said Pauley, CEO and co-founder of Horsepower Today. “We wanted to create something that put the clients’ needs first, and that aggregated all of the advisers that are important to a business owner.”

She explained how it’s common for business owners to have multiple advisers – CPAs, attorneys, investment and insurance advisers – who do not collaborate, let alone talk to each other.

“And the business owner then has to play quarterback, something they don’t have time to do,” Pauley said. “What we

created is the solution, allowing business owners to focus on what they do best – growing their businesses. We get everyone together for the interest of the client and ensure we are all working toward a common goal.”

She furthermore characterized Horsepower Today as a relationship-based fractional solution to a traditional staffing or recruiting firm.

“Whether it be controller or CFO services, HR and coaching services, strategic planning, IT services (just to name a few), if there is a business need, Horsepower Today can help,” she said.

“Additionally, we work alongside our clients and ‘horses’ to gain institutional knowledge of our clients’ needs. When we unearth an opportunity to help in other ways, we add that value with our clients, and they appreciate it.”

A Fresh Take on Employment

Leaving her job to grow a business was a risk.

“When I realized that there were people much smarter than me who I could bring into my ‘stable’ to provide the services to clients,

Page 4 • March 1, 2024
COVER story LEADERS
Business owners are willing to think outside of the box and try something new when it comes to staffing or finding the right talent.
BROOKE PAULEY, CEO AND CO-FOUNDER, HORSEPOWER TODAY

the company started to grow,” she said.

It is often said that challenges breed ingenuity and innovative solutions. Pauley said launching Horsepower Today in 2020 led the company to be more forward-thinking.

“We had visions of what we wanted Horsepower Today to be someday and were laying the foundation on how to get it there,” she said. “This led to the full configuration of Horsepower Today as it is now, essentially re-launched in early 2023.”

Pauley underscored the significance of increased flexibility from business owners.

“Business owners are willing to think outside of the box and try something new when it comes to staffing or finding the right talent,” she explained. “Many have become accustomed to remote work, virtual work, and outsourced work.

“As the talent pool continues to shrink, the ways we used to employ people to work (hiring full-time salaried employees who are expected to sit in office from 8-to-5) don’t necessarily work anymore.”

Pauley pointed back to how, in 2020, the organization was just her and a laptop, supporting clients on a “very part-time basis.”

“Growth was always ‘chicken or the egg,’” she said. “Do we find more clients to jump in full-time while still being capped by my single capacity? Or, find more service providers to join Horsepower Today without having solidified contracts? In 2023, my vision was shared with others, many of whom are now my partners who took the leap to join me.”

The Straightaway to Success

It was those partners’ confidence and connections that paved the path toward finding talent to come on board. This occurred as they were also selling solutions to prospective clients.

“It is still a balancing act, having horses in the stable to serve our client pipeline, but with the volume, more staff on board and connections, it’s much easier and we’re on a roll,” she stated.

The company has expanded beyond Pauley’s initial expertise

and has grown to include HR, leadership training, CFO/controller services, bookkeeping/accounting and legal and marketing consulting.

Pauley emphasized the highly tailored nature of its solutions, with each client’s unique needs front and center.

“We realize that business owners and their needs are not a onesize-fits-all proposition,” she said. “We are a relationship-driven business and we work to get to know our clients and learn about what keeps them up at night to provide a solution, whether it be project-based or ongoing, that gives the business owner peace of mind, but also provides the ‘horsepower’ to move the company forward.”

Following the new year re-launch, Pauley said her biggest source of pride has been the talent surrounding her, including COO Diana Novoselska.

“Watching her take my vision and make it into a reality has been astounding,” she said.

The Next Leap

Horsepower Today is now powering up its brand awareness and client base on a national level. Pauley’s goals don’t end there as the company is launching its Family Office Services division.

“There are more family offices controlling more wealth than ever before and our services help harness this wealth to grow through the generations,” she said. “What we offer works extremely well with this growing group of people with family wealth that needs to be managed for optimal generational wealth.”

Solutions that fall under its family office/individual office services category include family governance, asset management liaison, large asset transactions, risk management, HR and recruiting on/off-boarding, and more to help “successful families grow their assets, maintain family unity, develop family talent, and identify trusted partners who contribute to these objectives.”

Iconic Women Leaders

THE EXPERIENCES AND ACHIEVEMENTS THAT HELPED DEFINE THEM

There is no short supply of accomplished business and community leaders in the Midlands who just so happen to be women.

These leaders are not stingy in sharing their talents and experiences — lifting other women and emerging changemakers. Here, we highlight five local women who are breaking new ground and transforming their industries and our communities.

CHANDA CHACÓN PRESIDENT & CEO, CHILDREN’S NEBRASKA

Chanda Chacón currently serves as the president and CEO of Children’s Nebraska.

She has been both a fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives, and a courtappointed child advocate serving children in custody. She also maintains active membership in several influential spaces including Women of Ten, Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), Children’s Hospital Association, Greater Omaha Chamber board of directors and Project Harmony board of directors.

Formerly, she served in leadership roles at Arkansas Children’s and Texas Children’s Hospital — one of the nation’s top pediatric health care institutions.

“Most recently, my proudest professional accomplishment is Children’s Nebraska’s intentional focus on improving mental health for children and adolescents in our region,” Chacón stated. “There

has been a significant increase in mental health disorders in youth in recent years, including depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation and the statistics are sobering.”

She noted how, in any given year, one in five children and adolescents will experience a mental health condition.

“Of those facing mental illness in their lifetime, 50% begin experiencing symptoms by the age of 14; however, an average of 11 years pass before treatment begins,” she said. “While mental health challenges in children, adolescents and young adults are real and widespread, they are treatable and often preventable, too.”

Between the groundbreaking of its Behavioral Health and Wellness Center statewide initiatives, Chacón continued, Children’s is working to transform the quality of — and access to — care in behavioral and mental health for the children and families.

“Doing the right thing is not always easy and I am honored to be a part of a community and organization that takes this work to heart,” she said.

Her advice on leadership:

“Leadership can be challenging and having both grit and grace have been my guideposts along this journey. The grit is around working hard and being willing to tackle big challenges with courage. Grace is about having it for yourself and the people you lead. You are not a leader unless you inspire people to follow and caring about them as individuals is essential.”

“Koley Jessen has the breadth of talent needed to help us navigate the many legal complexities of our business - all right here in Omaha.

JAY WARREN-TEAMER

DIRECTOR OF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION, BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF NEBRASKA

An Omaha native, Jay Warren-Teamer has spent her personal and professional life serving the community. In August 2020, she was appointed director of diversity and inclusion at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, where she drives the company’s diversity, equity and inclusion strategy.

Formerly, she co-founded I Be Black Girl with childhood friend Ashlei Spivey. She leads the group’s giving circle, IBBGives, which has invested more than $150,000 in projects supporting Black women, femmes and girls in the metro since its launch in 2018.

“When I joined the company in 2020, there was already a commitment to DEI and I had the opportunity to build and execute a more comprehensive strategy,” Warren-Teamer said. “Since then, according to surveys we’ve conducted, the percentage of BCBSNE employees who agree the company values diversity and inclusion has increased steadily from 85% in 2020 to 93% in 2023.”

She also isolated BCBSNE’s Human Resources Association of the Midlands (HRAM) Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Advocacy and Leadership (IDEAL) award.

“The survey results and award are among my proudest accomplishments, because it’s a reflection of the time and dedication that not only I’ve put into building our DEI program, but that our leadership team and employees have as well,” she explained. “Our employees having a sense of belonging is at the core of this work. So, I take great pride in the fact that Team Blue feels the impact of those efforts and that it’s improved over time.”

The HRAM award was a standout moment, because WarrenTeamer said she was able to celebrate it with so many other leaders.

“I’m the only full-time employee dedicated to DEI at BCBSNE, so I rely heavily on our six, soon to be eight, volunteer employee resource group leaders, our Diversity and Inclusion Group and so many other key internal business partners to help it all come to life,” she said.

Her advice on leadership:

“Lead from where you are … Leadership is not a title; it is an action. It’s the everyday moments where we can empower others, bring life to a vision, or solve problems. That’s leadership in action. I began to focus on the impact I could have by raising my hand for internal workgroups, building deeper relationships with my colleagues and spending a significant amount of time volunteering in the community. It’s through those things that I really honed and sharpened my leadership skills – and set myself up for the role I’m in now.”

JOANNE LI CHANCELLOR, UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA OMAHA

Following a national search and unanimous approval from the University of Nebraska System Board of Regents, Chancellor Joanne Li became UNO’s 16th chancellor in July 2021. She made history in two ways; as the first woman of color to serve as UNO chancellor and as the first Asian-American in the history of the University of Nebraska System to hold an executive leadership role.

Since joining UNO, she has positioned the university and Omaha as a workforce development engine through innovative approaches to teaching, learning, working, research, affordability, partnerships, and student retention and support. A highly engaged leader and scholar, Li formerly served as the dean of the Florida International University (FIU) College of Business in Miami. In part, she is a member of the CNBC’s Financial Wellness Council, the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) Global Network Americas Advisory Board and a founding member of the International Advisory Council of the Lisbon School of Economics and Management in Portugal.

Women Leaders

In 2024, she was recognized by publication Diverse: Issues in Higher Education and its 13th annual Women’s History Month as one of the 40 leading women in higher education.

For Li, her proudest accomplishment is pursuing higher ed in the U.S. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Finance with a support discipline in econometrics and a Bachelor of Science (Summa Cum Laude) from Florida State University. She also holds a Chartered Financial Analyst designation, is a protégé in the Class of 2016 Millennium Leadership Institute co-sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, and graduated from Harvard University’s Institute for Management and Leadership in Education (MLE).

“As a first-generation student, earning a degree in the United States changed [my] life,” Li said, adding that she is “committed to pay this forward by creating accessible pathways to change the trajectory and mobility of others in the community.”

Her goal is to empower students and improve social and economic mobility, a commitment embodied by Li’s leadership in serving as a partner to strengthen the development of the future workforce.

Her advice on leadership:

“Build a strong circle of advisers and leaders who will help uplift you and your business. Step up when necessary and have no fear when doing so.”

As CEO of North End Teleservices (NET), Tapio heads the largest AfricanAmerican-owned business in Nebraska.

Under her leadership, NET has landed on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies for the past four years, injecting more than $302 million into the state’s economy since 2018.

The economic impact overshadows accolades, as Tapio is focused on job creation and community revitalization; she also established Forever North Real Estate, the largest private mixeduse development investment in North Omaha.

As Tapio humbly tells it, she made “a few phone calls” to ignite the launch of Nebraska Black Women United, an 800-strong organization empowering Black women across the state and beyond. Among numerous other leadership accomplishments, Tapio is the founder of The NET Work Spot, a coworking space in North Omaha; serves as chair of the Greater Omaha Chamber’s board of directors; is a 2022 Omaha Business Hall of Fame inductee; and

was named Woman of the Year by Inspire Awards and USA Today Nebraska Woman of the Year in 2023 and 2022, respectively.

“It’s gratifying to have a culture where many of our employees are experiencing first-time success, and reaching personal and professional goals they previously may have thought were not possible,” she stated. “Their success is the driving force that compels us to forge ahead. Their success is my success.”

The work, she continued, is all about the sustained betterment of the community for many years to come.

“What I am doing today is the culmination of everything I have done and experienced in my life to this point,” she said. “My life’s journey is what enables me to do the work that I get to do. Nothing in life is ever wasted.”

Her advice on leadership:

“Never be afraid to lead with your heart.”

“One of the best ways to change the world is by creating jobs.”

“You should be able to master the art of an effective, sevenminute meeting.”

Getting her start in marketing in 1971, Linda Lovgren has made her mark in the Omaha marketing and public relations industry. Starting Lovgren Marketing group in 1978, she led the firm until 2018, when she sold it to Emspace Group, owned by Elizebeth Murphy. The firms would merge to create a distinctive branding, marketing and public relations blend. In fact, the now Emspace + Lovgren was named Marketing Agency of the Year in 2020 by the American Marketing Association Omaha Chapter.

Her commitment to the profession is demonstrated by the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) counselor designation and, in 2020, she earned certification International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) as a public outreach facilitator.

Lovgren has also demonstrated leadership in a wide array of civic and community causes, not limited to making history as the first woman elected to chair the Greater Omaha Chamber board of directors, and as a 2012 inductee of the Omaha Business Hall of Fame. Following a breast cancer diagnosis in 2010, Lovgren organized the Nebraska program of Casting for Recovery with the help of 14 other women volunteers. This program has since served 270-plus women with breast cancer with a three-day retreat focused on the healing power of nature via fly fishing and physical and emotional support.

In addition to her induction into the Hall of Fame and leading one of the “most effective chambers of commerce in the country,” Lovgren is most proud of her work on some of the region’s mostwatched projects: the bond issue for the convention center and arena, the CSO water quality program, and the Storm Chasers Triple-A baseball stadium.

She also highlighted the continuation of her business through a woman-owned branding and marketing firm, Emspace, that as she puts it, “embraces the legacy of community enhancement and philanthropy.”

Her advice on leadership:

“I believe that leaders emerge when they recognize a need, can visualize a solution, speak up and energize the talents of others to accomplish the goal. The gift and desire to lead is about creating community, respecting diverse talents, believing in yourself and pursuing shared goals.”

ACX Cinemas Bucks National Trends

EXPANDS TO OTHER STATES AS THEATER CHAINS STRUGGLE POST-PANDEMIC

Bill and Colleen Barstow started what was to become ACX Cinemas with one single-screen theater in Plattsmouth and, in its 35 years, its entertainment venue portfolio has grown to span Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin – with more locations and concepts on the way.

Born out of Aksarben Cinema, the ACX brand pays homage to its premium, large-format (PLF) auditorium in Omaha, according to Executive Vice President Michael Barstow.

The name was also applied to the development of its theater at 204th and Q streets in Elkhorn.

“So, the name ACX Cinema 12+ came to be,” he said. “From there, we decided as a family it was time to re-brand Main Street Theatres as ACX Cinemas after our company had gone through a kind of re-birth in 2020.”

Via company information, the independent theater chain’s initial beginnings occurred while Bill Barstow was in the military, serving as a staff sergeant at Offutt Air Force Base. He and wife, Colleen, bought the single-screen on a land contract, borrowing $1,200 for the down payment over three separate credit

cards.

Following Bill Barstow’s eight and a half years in the U.S. Air Force as a weather forecaster, the couple decided to focus 100% on the “business of movies.” Today, in addition to Michael, daughter Andrea Barstow-Olson serves as EVP of marketing and partnerships.

“I joined the company officially as my sole occupation back in 2017,” Michael Barstow explained. “I was living in Chicago after working a couple of corporatetype jobs after graduating from college at the University of Michigan.”

Now leading the company’s expansion efforts, Barstow recalled: “I was getting burned out and finally asked myself why I was working for these other companies when I could be working for the family business I had grown up with.”

Beyond being in the “business of movies,” ACX Cinemas characterizes itself as an “experience-based entertainment company.”

“Whether you want to spend a couple hours catching a new blockbuster in one of our heated recliners, having a Detroit-style pizza at one of our restaurants with your family, or drinking a craft cocktail while bowling at our location in

I am not sure back then they realized what it would grow into and how it would become a full-family business with my siblings and I all involved.

Milwaukee, we want you to be entertained and walk away already thinking about your next visit,” Barstow said of this differentiator.

In fact, the Wisconsin complex is among its newest developments. The space at Bayshore Mall encompasses a half-dozen screens, gaming and bowling, and food and rink with its Backlot Pizza+Kitchen restaurant and bar concept, headlined by its Detroit-style pizza.

“Milwaukee felt like a natural growth from Omaha with our Midwestern roots,” he said. “I live in Chicago. So, it is a short commute for me to oversee project management and operations.”

Additionally, Barstow described its location in the Bayshore mixed-use shopping center as undergoing a massive transformation with opportunities to eat, work and play in one space.

Other new developments include taking over the operations and renovations of the historic Harper Theater in Chicago’s Hyde Park.

“I have been working with a broker for a few years as we had been looking at the Chicago market for a while,” Barstow said. “We stumbled upon the Harper and the family fell in love with the historic theater and Hyde Park.”

In fact, Barstow said it felt like the hometown theaters where the family got its start.

“It was a great summer kickoff for us there and we are looking forward to a holiday season that has something for everyone,” he stated.

Spotlight on Future Concepts, Locales

At a time when the company noted many other theater chains are struggling to bounce back after the pandemic, ACX Cinemas shows no signs of slowing down.

“We are opening a theater in the Blue Ash suburb of Cincinnati,” Barstow said, adding that the location will boast seven auditoriums and a Backlot Pizza + Kitchen/Backlot Taphouse. “In Chicago, we are currently under construction for an Inkwell cocktail bar in the West Loop.”

The latter location will be a sister bar to Inkwell in Omaha at Countryside Village.

“We are constantly evolving our food and beverage offerings,” Barstow said, when asked about his vision for experiences/amenities going forward. “We like to try new things and see what works. If there is a story to tell or a perfect tie-in with a movie, we love diving into that.”

The family also recently opened a new concept in the Bayshore complex, Buchanan’s, which features a UK-inspired menu.

No stranger to trying new offerings, Barstow addressed its rollout of “sensoryfriendly” viewings with brighter lights and quieter sounds for families with children of diverse abilities, such as autism and epilepsy.

“We love being able to make the movie-going experience comfortable and memorable for all of our guests,” he said, noting that sister, Andrea BarstowOlson, will connect with support groups and offer such viewings when they express interest. “We get such positive feedback on them and love being able to offer them to our community.”

Barstow said giving back has always been a “pillar” of the company.

“We have deep relationships with some local nonprofits and schools, such as Angels Among Us, JDRF, and University of Nebraska Omaha,” he said. “We are an entry-level employer and love being a kid’s first job.

“It is a great place to work on communication skills, working together as a team, and free movies are a good bonus.”

The second-generation leader reflected on the company’s humble roots.

“I am not sure back then they realized what it would grow into and how it would become a full-family business with my siblings and I all involved,” he said. “It is pretty cool to be a part of something that is so engrained in our social culture and local communities.”

Groundbreaking Sustainability

THE RIVERFRONT’S PIONEERING GREEN ACHIEVEMENT

Omaha residents have been enjoying a revitalized RiverFront ever since Gene Leahy Mall opened in July of 2022, but many might not know of its other groundbreaking achievement in sustainability.

In 2021, the Riverfront Revitalization Project received an Envision award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, the first project in Nebraska to win such a distinction. Officially completed in 2023, the project encompassed Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of America Park and Lewis and Clark Landing. Visitors can now come to the RiverFront for live concerts and recreational activities or explore the Kiewit Luminarium.

In addition to its pioneering green achievements, the project landed HDR a Grand Award for ACEC’s 2024 Engineering Excellence Awards. HDR’s engineering team helped bring the vision of a cohesive public space to reality, with sustainable principles at the forefront.

“The park was designed with green infrastructure and sustainability in mind, including recycling everything that was removed during construction,” said HDR Senior Project Manager Chris Koenig.

What is Envision and how do projects earn the distinction?

ISI’s framework for Envision ensures infrastructure projects follow its guidelines for assessing sustainability, resiliency and equity, according to ISI. Project managers wanting to follow Envision guidelines use 64 sustainability and resilience indicators in five categories: Quality of Life, Leadership, Resource Allocation, Natural World and Climate & Resilience. So, how can projects receive Envision awards? Individuals can earn the Envision Sustainability Professional credential and earn the distinction via a third party through ISI’s Verification Program. Those interested in more details can visit sustainableinfrastructure.org.

The RiverFront’s Platinum Win

A large part of the RiverFront’s Platinum status comes from its high score in the Quality of Life category. The project scored eight points, plus eight bonus points, notably for its children’s play area in the Gene Leahy Mall. Additionally, the project employed a large number of local workers, restored and repurposed existing community landmarks, added more public space, improved mobility and incorporated historical buildings and the iconic Gene Leahy Mall slides in its design. The RiverFront includes sculpture gardens, event lawns, performance areas, interactive water features, a dog park, a skating ribbon and an urban beach.

Not only did the project provide public space which has been an unmatched effort of placemaking for Omaha, but it also built the future into its vision.

“Statues, limestone blocks and removed bridges were installed at other parks. The sustainable design focused on future operations with soil profiles designed to encourage long-term tree growth, drip irrigation to reduce water usage, stormwater detention ponds woven into the landscape, and LED lights to reduce the energy footprint,” Koenig said.

A CAREER BY DESIGN

FRAYND STRATEGICALLY GROWS SUN VALLEY LANDSCAPING

Paul Fraynd knew early on that he wanted to build a career on his own terms. A typical story of any college student, to make money he bought a lawn mower for $50 and put out flyers on the Creighton University campus. A big differentiator for Fraynd was his drive to build a career out of his side gig. Omaha Friendly Services was officially started in 2003.

When an opportunity to merge arose in 2012, Fraynd joined Sun Valley Landscaping alongside Hugh Morton. Now CEO and partner of the full-service landscaping business, he hasn’t looked back.

“Since the two of us got together, we’ve grown it about four and a half times larger from when we started,” Fraynd said, noting the company employs 70 at peak season.

Sun Valley Landscaping offers commercial and residential services, with a supply yard to support landscape design and installation. During the winter months, the company provides snow removal.

Fraynd said one aspect that attracted him to the industry is the opportunity to build a career. As far as becoming an entrepreneur goes, he said he doesn’t “know any different,” and has been drawn to being involved in the community.

“I just really like being outdoors,” Fraynd said. “I like the power of growing plants and landscaped gardens just make me

happy. I just always gravitated towards it.”

Fraynd attributes his membership to EO Nebraska as a key tool to understanding how to grow his business. One of the biggest draws for him is the non-judgement zone the organization provides.

“If anybody is in trouble or just having a rough week or month, it’s kind of just in the culture that you can reach out even if you don’t know someone that well,” he said. “It’s refreshing because usually people want to give you advice or they know the answer to your problem.”

Fraynd said the unique culture of entrepreneurs allows members to both share their stressors and celebrate their successes. Additionally, the educational events provided by EO allow for individual growth.

“When you have your own business, for the most part, the business is going to go as far as the leader and so the more opportunities to grow ourselves in terms of business, the better,” he said.
