EYE ON THE future KUGLER VISION HOMES IN ON LATEST TECH
People are ditching their contacts and eyeglasses in favor of corrective eye surgery in greater numbers than ever before. Until recently, LASIK was the only corrective eye surgery offered to patients, and not everyone was a good candidate for LASIK. However, today there are six additional surgeries available, increasing the field of potential patients. To meet this growing demand, Dr. Lance Kugler founded Kugler Vision to specialize in the many varieties of corrective eye surgery. After practicing ophthalmology in Omaha for four years, Kugler moved his family to Nashville for a year-long fellowship in refractive surgery with Dr. Ming Wang. “I realized what was happening in the industry and that what we needed in this part of the country was a dedication to refractive surgery,” Kugler said. After returning to Omaha, Kugler bought the assets of Dr. William Schlichtemeier in 2011, and Kugler Vision was born. “It’s an exciting time in vision correction surgery because we’re able to help a higher percentage of people than we’ve ever been able to help before,” Kugler said. “LASIK used to be the only way to [surgically correct vision], and you were either a good candidate for LASIK or you were not.”
Tailoring Tech
Although LASIK — which reshapes the cornea to change its focusing power — is still the most commonly used method of corrective surgery, those who are not good candidates for the procedure may be helped by one of six other possible surgeries. “We can tailor the technology to the patient’s needs so we’re able to deliver better results than ever before,” Kugler said. One example is Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), which uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea. The key difference between PRK and LASIK is that the epithelium, or tissue covering the front of the cornea, is removed and the laser is applied to the outer surface. Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE), commonly known as keyhole LASIK, is designed to treat myopia, or nearsightedness. Another option is Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL), which is like a contact lens implanted in the patient’s eye. Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) removes the natural lens inside the eye and replaces it with a lens. Refractive Cataract Surgery is cataract surgery that also fixes the focus. Corneal Inlays is a technology that can also fix the focus in various ways.

I realized what was happening in the industry and that what we needed in this part of the country was a dedication to refractive surgery. - LANCE KUGLER, CEO, KUGLER VISION
Upswing in Surgeries
“Omaha has always been a leader in refractive surgery, but what was happening in 2009 when I made this change was that many of the things we were doing in the field were becoming refractive procedures,” Kugler said. “Back in 2009, LASIK was the only way we were fixing vision. It was clear that new technologies were coming, and rapidly, and I wanted to be in a position to specialize in that.” People are choosing to have their vision corrected in higher numbers than ever before for several reasons, one being word of mouth. “People are hearing from friends and family about how incredible the surgeries are. Another is cost savings,” Kugler said. “People are realizing that having their vision fixed is less expensive than buying glasses and contacts over the years. “COVID has accelerated [the trend] because they have to wear masks in situations where eyewear is a barrier to them, so they’re looking for alternatives. Those things combined have led to a huge upswing in vision correction surgery over the past few years.” Early in the pandemic, when many hospitals and outpatient surgical centers closed down or limited access, Kugler Vision established procedure centers in its office to better control the environment. The biggest change was moving a large percentage of patient interactions to telemedicine encounters. “We wouldn’t necessarily have to continue that way now, but we have because patients love it. It’s also more efficient for us,” Kugler said. “We’re able to see more people in a shorter amount of time, and we’re delivering better quality because of the way we’re able to go over their test results with them.”
For Now, For the Future
With new technologies constantly being developed, Kugler Vision works hard to remain current. “We’re training optometrists to help with refractive procedure management, and we train surgeons here to become refractive surgeons,” Kugler said. “We’re adding two new people to those programs this year. We’re also adding staff because of all the patients we’re seeing.”
LANCE KUGLER, CEO, KUGLER VISION
Kugler, a Nebraska native, earned his undergraduate degree in computer science from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and attended Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland. He did an internship in internal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha where he also did his residency in ophthalmology. While in medical school, Kugler signed up for a project with an ophthalmologist who needed people with computer experience. “Most med students don’t get any exposure to ophthalmology unless they seek it out because it’s not part of the regular curriculum in most med schools,” he said. “I was blown away by the field, partly because of how much computer science and engineering there is in the field. Most of medicine is heavily technology-oriented, but ophthalmology is on a whole other plane because of all the optics and lasers and computer-guided procedures, so it was a natural fit for me.” Kugler is one of the original founders and the first president of the Refractive Surgery Alliance, an international organization comprised of over 350 of the world’s leading vision correction surgeons. He is also an associate professor of Refractive Surgery at UNMC’s Truhlsen Eye Institute.

The Cost to Be the Boss
FRANCHISING
UNCERTAIN TIMES BOOSTING FRANCHISE OWNERSHIP BY DWAIN HEBDA
KELLY CRUMMER
SENIOR DIRECTOR OF FRANCHISE DEVELOPMENT, SCOOTER’S COFFEE
In early 2020 the uncertainty of the new and mysterious COVID-19 gripped large and small businesses alike. Scooter’s Coffee was like every company, taking steps in the moment to keep people safe and from worrying over what the future held. The Bellevue-born franchise coffee chain didn’t have to wait very long. Deemed an essential business, the company’s locations kept brewing and within 90 days the phone started ringing off the hook. “We did see a dip in interest in March and April of 2020,” said Kelly Crummer, senior director of franchise development. “Then as we started to hit later in the spring, people took a look around and saw what stayed open the last two months. We got more calls every month since May of 2020 than we had the previous month.” The momentum has hardly taken a breath since. As of February 2022, Scooter’s topped the 400 franchisee mark, each store employing between 15 and 30 employees, depending on the location. In-process commitments will expand the company’s presence to 30 states. Crummer said several factors have contributed to the company’s brisk franchising pace. Drive-thru service had long been a function of customer convenience, but that built-in feature also paid off during pandemic restrictions on dining rooms and in-person ordering. “I think the best way to put it is, we were set up for social distancing before we knew that we needed to be set up for social distancing,” she said. “We put some other things in place to protect our

employees and our customers at the initial height of the pandemic and continue to practice those protocols. “It’s not a term we use, but a lot of our prospects and new franchisees have told us they sought us out because we are not only recession-resistant but also, and again this is their term not ours, pandemic-proof.”
A National Movement
Scooter’s is riding a wave of franchise interest in general that’s only beginning to pick up strength nationally. AppsThatDeliver. com reported this month that more than 3,000 franchises operate over 750,000 active outlets in the U.S., representing 300 different industries. The site also reports the franchise industry accounts for roughly 50% of all retail sales in the U.S. And as people continue to lose or leave positions in the corporate world – 69 million employees in total last year, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 47 million of whom left voluntarily – franchisers are bullish on the potential for big growth in outlets in the year ahead. Crummer said it’s a scenario the industry has seen before, only today it’s on steroids. “The interest in franchising is inverse to the health of our economy as a whole,” she said. “In 2008, 2009, when everybody felt like the sky was falling, interest in franchising rose because when people get laid off from their jobs in corporate America, or there are shifts in culture in corporate America, people tend to cast a wide net to look for opportunities to take control of their own destiny.” Blake Martin, president and franchise

specialist with FranNet of The Heartland agreed, saying the past two years have aligned perfectly for anyone who was even remotely thinking about owning their own business. “Many of those who felt insecure and unable to control their professional future have looked to the stability and predictability of franchising in order to take more control over their future through business ownership,” he said. “Those who we now refer to as participants in The Great Resignation are frequently in search of opportunities to work for themselves, and the systems and processes built into franchises often enable these ‘corporate refugees’ to fast-forward their ability to initiate working for themselves. “And frankly, sitting at home, people had more time to research such opportunities while the historically-low interest rates have offered a greater level of comfort to those who want to finance a new small business franchise.”
Pandemic Proven
The pandemic is also being viewed by many would-be franchise owners as a litmus test for business segments in general and companies in particular. Being able to watch in real time which ones survived or even thrived during a time of unprecedented challenge has become a major selling point. “With the pandemic, there has been a trend for businesses to evaluate what is essential to their business to stay profitable in the new service delivery economy,” said Greg Schreiber, attorney with Abrahams Kaslow &

Cassman. “Businesses have had to adapt to be able to deliver their products and services directly to consumers through curbside service, drive-thru or at-home delivery. “Restaurant chains, for example, adapted their business by opening ghost kitchens where they offer a slimmed-down menu to customers that is only for delivery, doing away with brick-and-mortar locations. The rise of ghost kitchens has allowed restaurant chains to remain nimble and cut down on overhead expenses.” Adaptability is one reason why, even as the restaurant industry itself took several hits in 2020, food franchises are selling fast, especially quick-service locations that performed nearly on par with corporate locations of the same brand. According to QSR Magazine, the number of quick-serve company-owned locations among the top 1,500 brands declined by 1.2% in 2020 while franchise locations declined by 2.4%, or around 4,400 units. However, take out restaurant Subway, which accounted for nearly 40% of those closures, and franchise units declined by only 1.7%. Having stabilized itself, the quickservice industry overall bounced back well in 2021, up 4.1% according to the International Franchise Association. As that story repeats itself throughout other industries – namely firms related to health care, education and retail, per RS Web Solutions – people are jumping at the opportunity. The New York Times reported Americans filed paperwork on 4.3 million businesses last year, a 24% increase from the year before, arresting a steady decline in entrepreneurship.
BUSINESS JOURNAL MIDLANDS Collaboration between franchisees and franchisors is essential to success, so this process is not for anyone who wants to make every decision without input from others.
- BLAKE MARTIN, PRESIDENT AND FRANCHISE SPECIALIST, FRANNET OF THE HEARTLAND
“Overall, it’s a good time to franchise,” Martin said. “Franchising has responded well to making their research process far more virtual-friendly, so ease of access to information has improved. Interest rates remain historically low and will remain at a historically low level even if and after the Fed hikes rates multiple times. Thus, those looking to borrow for a franchise are in a favorable position. “Furthermore, lenders are more interested in funding proven franchise concepts than ever before, given their own COVID concerns. That said, understanding the right franchise industries to explore is imperative, as there have been winners and losers through the pandemic.”
The Right Match
Aligning with the right franchise is as much of an art as a science and a big part of entrepreneurial success is understanding the difference between a solid opportunity and a passing fad. “About five years ago, we were really at a time when beauty was hot. There were facial concepts. The blow-dry bars were just going crazy. Beauty was a hot industry,” said Zach Beutler, chief development officer and co-founder of Horsepower Brands. “You started to see it shift about four years ago into fitness and for about two years, fitness just blew up until it absolutely got stopped in its tracks by COVID. “Now in today’s world home services are at the top. I just got back from the largest franchise broker conference in the country and our Mighty Dog Roofing was the top selling franchise brand of 2021. Who looks for a roofing concept? Typically, nobody. But COVID really gave home services a pedestal to slingshot that forward.” Beyond the business category itself, potential franchisees should pay close attention to the franchisor company itself, scrutinizing the fine print that separates one company from another in terms of cost and ongoing support. Culture also goes a long way; a franchisor who is just as thoroughly evaluating the franchisee to determine a good match, as well providing direct honest feedback throughout, is likely a successful operator.
“Zach and I speak openly about not being afraid to have careful conversations with people,” said Josh Skolnick, chairman and co-founder of Horsepower Brands. “We talk about our franchise development process being an awards process in a way, that we award franchise opportunities to potential buyers, we do not sell franchises. “Some people think, ‘Why wouldn’t they just sell a franchise to anybody that wants to get in?’ We do have to have that uncomfortable conversation sometimes with people who have the capital and are willing to get into the business, but might not be the right culture fit for us. We’re constantly asking, ‘Is this somebody that we’d want to pick up the phone and take a phone call from when they’re having a bad day or they’re having an issue within their business?’”
Forming the Team
Horsepower Brands leadership developed a five-point plan for evaluating potential brands, covering areas any prospective entrepreneur should explore when considering a franchise. Beutler said understanding those measurements – capitalization, experience, customer acquisition, technology and support – will save any entrepreneur hassle, money and time. “My favorite quote is ‘good decisions come from experience and experience comes from bad decisions,’” he said. “Those five things in our presentation can lead someone to ask a lot of questions and expose a lot of holes in other brands. We’ve invested quite a bit of capital, time and resources into, I would say, the most sophisticated platform of support for a franchise system.” At the same time, Skolnick said, performing due diligence shouldn’t be merely a dodge from decisive action. He advised prospective franchisees that once the data points to a good opportunity not to hesitate out of fear or expecting the timing to be perfect. “There’s always going to be a level of fear that people will have,” he said. “We get asked all the time, ‘Is now the right time to get into business?’ Zach and I always tell people, there’s never a right time, you just

a general transactional attorney cannot provide. I often advise potential franchisees on items in the franchise agreement that may be negotiable with the franchisor, such as territory, training requirements and deadlines leading up to the opening of a new franchise. “Potential franchisees should also consider speaking with a franchise consultant who can evaluate their skillset to provide a narrow selection of franchises best suited for them. And, potential franchisees should also consult an accountant for additional insight into the
franchise’s business performance.” Finally, when selecting a team of professionals, make sure you align yourself with someone who will advise you honestly as to your strengths and weaknesses. Direct feedback is the best way to avoid getting into a bad match with a franchise that once entered can be emotionally and financially devastating to get out of. “You must be comfortable being a part of an organization where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” Martin said. “Collaboration between franchisees and franchisors is essential to success,

so this process is not for anyone who wants to make every decision without input from others. “Someone researching franchises must be willing to make time over a months-long process of learning and due diligence. Don’t choose a franchise because you like their product or service personally, choose a franchise because you like the business model yourself, and because you know that you can be successful in the role that the franchise owner must play in order to achieve success.”

DAVE POOLE,
VP/GENERAL MANAGER, ORACLE AVIATION
After a lull at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, leisure travel came roaring back with corporate travel lagging slightly behind. Scott Vlasek, a lecturer at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Aviation Institute, said that although airline business is rebounding from the early days of the pandemic, there’s still a long road ahead, which will be impacted by the new COVID-19 variants. “The domestic market is certainly coming back faster than international,” he said. “On the international side, they are not expecting this segment to recover to pre-pandemic levels until late 2024 or early 2025. “On the domestic side we are seeing a faster recovery than anticipated. The leisure market should reach 2019 levels during 2022 and the business segment is expected back in 2023.”
First Priority: Support Services
Although there’s a massive need for pilots globally, an even more pronounced shortage right now is for qualified aviation technicians and mechanics. “I have a huge need for aviation maintainers,” said Oracle Vice President and General Manager Dave Poole. “That field will continue to grow and needs as many bright young people as we can get into it. Beyond that, every other support job in aviation is continuing to grow and expand and needs good talent. “Only about 10% of aviation jobs are in flying aircraft. The other 90% are all of the support services required to keep the planes and the industry afloat. No matter what someone’s interest is — accounting, legal,

medical, or general business — there’s an aviation component to those educational paths.” According to the Boeing Outlook for Pilots and Technicians, there is a worldwide need for over 612,000 civil aviation pilots, 7,626,000 maintenance technicians, and 886,000 new cabin crews over the next 20 years. The demand for these new positions comes from a mix of airlines growing their operations, retirements, and attrition. In North America, 130,000 pilots, 132,000 maintenance technicians, and 170,000 cabin crew members are needed. “The industry needs to be doing a better job of reaching out and recruiting women and underrepresented groups,” Vlasek said. “There is also a need for more scholarships and financial assistance for students going into aviation. Flight training is very expensive. Individuals can expect to spend $50,000 to $75,000 or more to get the certificates and ratings they need to become a professional pilot. “While we hear a lot about the pilot shortage, there are other areas that are in need of highly trained and skilled professionals. On the nonflight side there is a need for air traffic controllers, dispatchers for both the scheduled airlines and charter operators, maintenance professionals, airport managers and operations specialist, flight attendants, and more.”
Pilot Shortage Persists
Last year turned out to be the best year for Ultra Air, and President Scott Robertson expects this year to match or exceed that growth.
SCOTT ROBERTSON PRESIDENT, ULTRA AIR

CHIEF INFORMATION & DEVELOPMENT OFFICER, OMAHA AIRPORT AUTHORITY
“At the very beginning of the pandemic we had essentially no business for about a month and a half,” he said. “After that it recovered month to month so by the end of 2020 we were back to where we were preCOVID or maybe even a little above that.” Although the firm has been getting plenty of job applicants, many of them don’t have the necessary experience or something else in their job history that does not qualify them for the jobs for which they’re applying. “We’re seeing fewer people who meet all of our benchmarks,” Robertson said. “One of the big problems is that most, if not all, flight schools got shut down during COVID. For argument’s sake, say there was a one-year lapse in flight training. “On top of that, people decided to leave aviation, and they’re not coming back. The problem is it takes literally years to train a pilot and get them the experience necessary to [enter] the cockpit of a jet airplane as captain. Every airline is struggling with this. Even the military is struggling with it.” Oracle Aviation, now in its eighth year at the Millard Airport, has partnered with Sioux City to open a new aviation facility. The project will be going out to bid shortly and construction is expected to begin by the end of the first quarter of this year. Oracle also has partnered with Morningside University in Sioux City, which is creating a new bachelor’s degree program for flight training, and it has partnered with Western Iowa Tech Community College which will start a new program for aviation maintenance to train qualified mechanics. “The neat thing about these two locations for us is they’re close enough together that they can support each other but far enough

apart that they don’t cannibalize each other’s business,” Poole said. “Also, it will be very easy for us to reposition people, airplanes, and equipment from location to location.” Urban Air Mobility (UAM) — an aviation transportation system which uses autonomous aircraft that deliver passengers and or cargo at lower altitudes in urban and suburban areas — is using new technologies for aircraft development, operations, and infrastructure. The emergence of electric aircraft that can take off vertically and carry up to four individuals helps to reduce aviation’s carbon footprint and reduces the noise associated with aircraft operations.
Infrastructure Upgrades
“The passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will have a positive impact on the aviation industry,” Vlasek said. “We will see construction projects at airports, investment in air traffic control facilities, and promotion of career opportunities within the industry from these funds. “Airports in Nebraska will receive approximately $111 million for infrastructure development for airports over five years. There is also $5 billion in discretionary funding that airports can apply for to help with terminal projects that address aging infrastructure, expand accessibility for persons with disabilities, and improve access to disadvantaged populations.” There is a movement away from the airlines toward private aviation, but airplane prices are at historic highs, and

the labor market is difficult and expensive, Robertson said. In November 2021, over 359,000 passengers traveled through Eppley Airfield, according to Stephen McCoy, chief information & development officer for the Omaha Airport Authority. “While up from 2020 and supported by
Thanksgiving travelers, those numbers were down 7.6% from November 2019, before the pandemic,” he said. “It is anticipated that full travel recovery will still take some time.” In 2021 the Omaha Airport Authority introduced Video Relay Service (VRS) kiosks at Eppley Airfield. These seven new kiosks in the terminal aid deaf and hard-
of-hearing travelers with communications via sign language interpretation to voice telephone users. To further improve accessibility, 17 new visual paging monitors were installed in Eppley Airfield concourses in addition to those already in other parts of the terminal. “For blind or low-vision travelers, we also

offer service through the Aira smartphone app which provides access to highly-trained, remotely-located agents who deliver objective visual information including guidance through the Eppley Airfield terminal,” McCoy said. The Omaha Airport Authority is currently making a number of improvements to Eppley Airfield through the Airport Access and Parking Modernization Program. “That program includes projects such as our Terminal Entrance Roadway Expansion Project, which will include a new vehicle entrance to the Eppley Airfield terminal off Abbott Drive with stoplights and improved signage to make accessing the airport more convenient,” McCoy said. “It also includes additional traffic lanes to add capacity and provide safe and efficient access for years to come.” Eppley is also working on a South Garage Restoration Project that includes wider stalls, energy efficient lighting, improved wayfinding, and a new express ramp that will provide exclusive access to a new Premier Parking area on level three for the most convenient parking option with quick, climate-controlled terminal access. “Both projects will improve the customer experience, provide more efficient traffic flow, and enhance safety and security at Eppley Airfield,” Robertson said.

Over the past six months, Jet Linx has seen demand growth of more than 40% over the previous year, according to President & CEO Jamie Walker. “We’re running into a supply issue with having enough planes to provide all the lift to meet the demand,” he said. “The supply and demand issue is affecting the entire industry.” Some of that growth was pent-up demand from the pandemic. The firm started to see

demand spike in March and April 2021, as the COVID-19 vaccine became readily available, and by the end of June and early July the firm reached that 40% surge. “That continued through the end of the year and has not subsided,” Walker said. “Based on what we see from the ownership side, the entire industry has seen a huge surge in the number of people wanting to own airplanes, so the inventory went from 16% of aircraft available for sale to now less than 2%. “We thought by the end of the year we’d see a little lull in demand on the ownership side, but so far in January [that hasn’t happened]. We’ve seen aircraft values continuing to increase in December and January. “We don’t see this spike in demand as temporary. It wasn’t only pent-up demand from the pandemic. We see this continuing for a number of years due to the
microeconomics taking place in our industry.” At the beginning of the pandemic the firm implemented a number of new protocols regarding the cleaning of aircraft pre- and post-flight, including team members all wearing masks. “We have private terminals that sit outside of commercial airline terminals and (fixed base operators) that our competitors use, so we have a closed environment that only serves our customers,” Walker said. “So, some social distancing is already built in. We have over 20 private terminals nationwide, so many of our aircraft are now able to leave a Jet Linx terminal and arrive at a Jet Linx terminal.” Since Jet Linx started in 1999, the firm had envisioned 25 private terminals across the country. Its recent expansion into Florida gives it 20 locations from as far north as Boston, as far south as Miami, and as far west as Scottsdale, Arizona.
“The remaining five terminals we’re looking at (will) be west of Scottsdale,” Walker said. “Going into 2022 and beyond we see the continued development of new locations and growth of existing locations.” The firm recently finished remodeling its Dallas Love Field location. “We’ve been serving clients through there for over 12 years,” Walker said. “We wanted to refresh it, so we gutted it and remodeled it. We’re looking to remodel a number of other locations. In Omaha, we’re building a new 70,000-square-foot private terminal facility and hangar complex.” Millard-based Oracle Aviation saw strong growth in 2020 and 2021, according to Poole. “In 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, we had the most billable hours and flight training we ever had,” he said. “I think many people took a time out when COVID hit, reflected on things they had always wanted to do and learned to fly or looked for career
change possibilities. That was a bit of a surprise for us. It was a fantastic year in flight training.” On the corporate travel side, business has been fairly slow but has picked up in the last quarter, approaching pre-pandemic levels. “The charter world has been very busy in the last six to 12 months,” Poole said. “I think many individuals and organizations feel much more comfortable putting people in travel situations if they’re limiting and controlling their interactions with the public on an airplane. “[Also] I think we’ll see more firms and organizations rely on charter going forward because it’s an on-demand service. You’re not at the mercy of [your flight being canceled].” The firm has implemented stringent cleaning and disinfecting protocols for all of its training aircrafts, wiping them after every flight.

MEN’S FASHION
SMALL business GARY BALLARD, OWNER, HABERDASH O.N.E.

HABERDASH O.N.E. FINDS NICHE IN MEN’S CONSIGNMENT Haberdash O.N.E. owner Gary Ballard had over a decade of experience selling apparel for platforms like Grailed and eBay when he opened his own men’s consignment store in March 2018. He never considered opening a brick-and-mortar shop until he met a few young men with criminal records that were having employment challenges, needing immediate employment to satisfy their terms of parole. He took a close look around and noticed that there were plenty of consignment clothing stores for ladies, but there was a distinct lack for a shop that provided quality used clothing and accessories for men. So, Ballard decided to take the leap and open Haberdash O.N.E. The store opened in the historic 24th Street corridor in North Omaha with the support and assistance of the Omaha Economic Development Corporation.
Mentors Along the Way Ballard noted that from a young age, clothing and fashion was something that interested him. His ‘mentorship’ started with his mother Nancy and his grandmother. “My mother ritually took my sister and I on Saturdays to the shopping mall to shop for the week,” he said. “It wasn’t a stretch for us to travel to Kansas City to catch sales at Loehmann’s and other major department
stores. My grandmother was famous for allowing us to circle toys out of the J.C. Penny’s and Sears catalogs as children, which graduated into being able to order our clothing out of Bullock & Jones and Bachrach catalogs from our teenage years into adulthood. Clothing and style were just what my family ‘did’ – on both sides.”
The Inspiration The company’s name is a play on the traditional English ‘haberdashery’ creation, an establishment that houses a barber, tailor, hatmaker, whiskey or cigar bar, and more. Ballard wanted to mirror this concept, but due to the limitations of the store’s physical space, he decided to offer a partial haberdashery experience and abbreviate it to ‘Haberdash.’ “We added O.N.E. as an acronym meaning: currently the only ‘one’ (men’s store) in the Omaha metro aspiring to model a full-service Haberdashery, and we also wanted to abbreviate Omaha, Nebraska,” he said. The shop is operated by Ballard and his shopkeeper Amos Lacy. Together, they began making a name for business and revenues started growing consistently until the onset of the pandemic and shutdowns that happened in 2020. This forced Haberdash O.N.E. to think outside the box and adjust its

business model to something that could yield long-term growth. They established a strong cyber presence and employed social media strategies to survive, in addition to starting their own ‘house’ branded merchandise. The result was a soaring success. Now, customers around world are sporting Haberdash O.N.E. apparel in the form of T-shirts, sweatshirts, outwear, pants, and more. “Our branded clothing and accessories began to quickly outsell the consignment inventory, making it unsustainable,” explained Ballard. “This was a very humbling and flattering problem to have. We are the only Nebraska born Urban-Collegiate brand. Our clothing and accessories reflect just that.” Currently, there are only a few consignment pieces left in the store and online. It may always keep a few of these items available, but looking ahead, Haberdash O.N.E. plans on continuing to grow its standalone brand.
Local and National Growth “Our brand is succeeding in the local community because we offer a very unique aesthetic and brick and mortar experience,” Ballard said. “We have retained near half of our brick-and-mortar clientele and have added a burgeoning national customer base in 2021. We’re not yet back to prepandemic revenues, however, we are making enough to remain open.” Today, the company is seeing significant growth in its national brand exposure, having already established a loyal customer base with people in different parts of the country. The shop also ships to customers in the United States within two business days.
Community Focused While the reach has grown far beyond what Ballard initially set out for, Haberdash O.N.E. is dedicated to the seeing the people and the communities of Nebraska – Omaha especially – thrive. “We are a minority inspired, created, owned, and operated brand and business,” said Ballard. “We look forward to continue connecting our brand messaging with positive initiatives throughout the city of Omaha, and the state at large.” Ballard plans to do this by publicly co-signing anti-violence, teen pregnancy/STD awareness and prevention campaigns, and helping with career prep and readiness initiatives for young people in the area.
Assessing the Future Retail Landscape Looking ahead, Haberdash O.N.E. recognizes that the retail landscape is continuing to morph, especially when traditional mall models are closing or adapting to more micro or pop-up shop models. Ballard’s primary 2022 goals are to grow client base and to gain local market share on the merit of uniqueness, relevance, and quality of house-branded offerings. “Due to the overwhelming excitement about this brand and its marketing, we are so very excited to see the growth in post-pandemic traffic with the merging of our new national cyber audience,” he said. “We are a viral sensation waiting to happen. Our customer reach is at its largest ever.”

The Omaha Streetcar Project A PIVOTAL MOMENT IN OUR CITY’S HISTORY
SAVE THESE dates:
OMAHA’S STREETCAR Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert recently announced the city’s intention to build a modern streetcar as part of a total mobility system for the urban core. A streetcar is a vehicle that runs on electricity and operates on rails within a lane of a street. Omaha’s $306 million streetcar project will link the CHI Health Center, the Old Market, and the new RiverFront parks to Midtown Crossing, the Blackstone Neighborhood, and the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Beyond providing a useful transportation option, the streetcar has the potential to truly transform the way we develop land in Omaha. Paired with other transportation improvements, the project makes large-scale development possible by allowing the city to more efficiently use its public parking structures. Presently, the scale of development is limited by the need to provide onsite parking for tenants. At up to $40,000 per stall, parking structures are expensive to build and take up a lot of space. Plus, the proliferation of parking lots and garages over the past several decades has diminished the character of downtown and midtown Omaha. It can be unpleasant to walk by surface parking lots and the blank walls of garages. The streetcar allows people who drive to park at shared public garages anywhere along the route to access destinations anywhere else along the route. Office workers can use the spaces during the day, while residents and people out for entertainment can use them at night. Running every 10 minutes and requiring no fare, the streetcar will be convenient and affordable to ride. Residents of the urban core who enjoy walking to get where they need to go, will find that hopping on the streetcar greatly extends the area they can comfortably reach on a stroll. Overall, the streetcar as an urban amenity and an enabler of larger-scale development is expected to spur at least $3 billion of development within three blocks of the line over the first 15 years

of its operation. And, the increased property taxes generated by the new development will largely pay for its construction while helping meet other needs like the provision of affordable housing. But, perhaps more importantly, the streetcar will help bring employment opportunities closer to the people who need them most. The development spurred by the streetcar will house many jobs in downtown and midtown Omaha, which are easily accessible by bus, automobile, or bicycle from the neighborhoods in eastern Omaha with the highest levels of unemployment and underemployment. In these ways, Omaha’s streetcar project marks a pivotal moment in the history of the city and region.

CALDWELL HELPS OTHERS BUILD CAREERS
ROBERT CALDWELL, PROJECT MANAGER, METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
A little more than a decade ago, Robert Caldwell sat on a stoop in New York City, filling out application paperwork for AmeriCorps Vista. “I remember saying, ‘I don’t know where this is going to take me,’ but lo and behold a few months later Omaha called me,” he said. “I made that transition here.” Caldwell was sponsored by Metropolitan Community College and put to work as a veteran support specialist. It was work he enjoyed, even given the stress of the Vista program itself. “You live in poverty,” he said. “I made $600 a month and I had to pay rent. The thing about it was, [that] I was already in poverty. I felt like I needed to do something I could get up in the morning and feel really good about the impact that [I was] making. “My father is a disabled Vietnam veteran and I heard that the mission here was to help service veterans. I felt like that was something that made sense for me, knowing my father’s circumstances.”
Connecting with Students Caldwell’s commitment and rapport with people impressed his supervisors so much that after his hitch with AmeriCorps was over, he was hired on full time. A little over three years ago, he was promoted into his current role –— workforce training manager and project manager — where he continues his mission of equipping people with the skills they need to build the career of their dreams. “Some of the programs that I think are really notable would be our Project Management Academy,” he said. “We have a drone flight school that’s really cool that we put together. We also have coursework for pharmacy technicians and veterinarian assistants. We are the only ones that I know of locally that’s doing some block chain training. “It’s kind of all over the map — it really is anything from trades to IT to business. We’re constantly balancing a variety of different new programs and projects that are on the horizon.” Caldwell speaks with particular pride about the IT training programs he manages, courses that
more often than not pave the way to a better life for students. “We train people who are unemployed or underemployed or working part-time to get quickly into high-paying IT jobs,” he said. “When I say quickly, it’s a 12-week program. “At the back end of it, you get a certification from CompTIA which is a globally recognized credentialing body and we have employers at the table right now with dozens of positions open, ready to hire these individuals. “Some of our graduates start in a position and within a year’s time their salary has increased tens of thousands of dollars via promotion or just advancing in their career. You can move up quickly in IT.”
Changing Lives Through Education Here again, what makes Caldwell good at his job is his ability to relate to the students he’s there to serve. “I’m a first-generation college student,” he said. “My father was a postal worker, my mother was a stay-at-home mother. When I was in college, I had a class where everyone had to identify five people who could help [them] network when [they] got out of college and maybe help you find a position. I realized I didn’t have anyone. I mean my family, friends, everyone around me really was working class. There [was no one] who owned businesses or had connections. “At the end of the day, I feel like serving others and giving back makes an impact, whether it’s at work or just a little bit of volunteering. My personal philosophy is we should all be playing a PRESENTING SPONSOR part in small ways to help others.”

The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document to the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment options are cash or check. 3. Deadline is noon on Tuesday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5. You will receive a paid invoice copy the first week it runs.
