STAYING AHEAD OF COMMUNITY NEEDS

Program offerings represent but one type of initiative taking shape in the local higher education landscape. Other undertakings include major capital investments on campuses. Such projects and efforts are further bridging the gaps between educational institutions and the communities that surround them.

Filling a Gap

Mental health. Education. Health Care. These topics are increasingly on the radar in the metro. Higher education institutions are accounting for them in a big way as these needs are shaping and representing new and evolving curricula.

Dr. Mary Hawkins, president of Bellevue University, highlighted the university’s launch of the Master of Social Work and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees.

“These programs will help meet two shortages in the workforce –

mental health practitioners and teachers,” Hawkins said, noting both will be offered in hybrid online and on-campus formats.

Its undergraduate teacher education program got a boost with elementary, special education, and ESL certification options and the buildout of two lab classrooms to prepare teachers to leverage technology and bridge the miles.

“We learned that there are gaps in how well schools can leverage digital capacity to reach more learners during the pandemic,” Hawkins stated. “BU is bringing its experience in digital/online learning to the forefront to make this a priority for teacher training.”

Additional launches include its Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Financial Planning, Master of Science in Supply Chain, and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.

Last month, UNO was awarded an $11 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, which marks the establishment of the groundbreaking

Center for Cardiovascular Research in Biomechanics to spur innovative materials and devices to address the health scourge posed by vascular disease.

“The establishment of the CRiB means more opportunities to recruit students from all around the world who want to be a part of this groundbreaking research,” said Chancellor Joanne Li.

College of Saint Mary Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, Kimberly Allen, noted that the college may soon add health care administration and behavioral and mental health to its programming.

“When the community asks for assistance, that’s where we’ll focus our attention,” she stated. “Our next endeavor is to work with an outside company to understand market research and determine what new programs are a must at CSM.”

In the trades department, Metropolitan Community College added a powersports and outdoor equipment repair program. Students will learn how to maintain and repair jet skis, snowmobiles, riding lawnmowers, and landscaping and construction equipment.

Building on Existing Programs

For MCC, Vice President of Academic Affairs Tom McDonnell emphasized enhancements to existing opportunities.

“In the automotive area, for example, we have a new partner program called Mopar CAP designed to train certified auto technicians to work on the Chrysler family of automotive brands,” he said. “This latest partnership is in addition to our TTEN program, which trains future Toyota and Lexus technicians.”

In construction, McDonnell said MCC is doing more with building

“We are finding this is an in-demand skill that even current architecture firm employees are interested in coming back to school to learn,” he explained.

The National Security Administration recently recertified MCC’s cybersecurity program as a Center for Academic Excellence. It was the first two-year college program of its kind to earn the designation in 2018.

“The MCC program has forged multiple transfer agreements with fouryear institutions,” he said.

Emphasis on Upskilling

An increasing segment of higher education is upskilling.

At Creighton University alone new upskill certificate programs include Behavioral Finance, Healthcare Collaboration, Conflict Management, and other certificate programs.

Creighton University Provost Mardell Wilson added that the new College of Professional and Continuing Education will soon offer courses in health informatics, health law, practice management, leadership training and tailored to busy professionals.

“These courses draw upon Creighton’s business and health sciences expertise to equip learners with in-demand skills for career advancement,” she said.

UNO also launched a series of fully online, 100% virtual, and tailored micro-credentials to meet the needs of upskilling the workforce and career advancement.

“Our offerings are authored by UNO faculty and staff and/or industry leaders, are each 15 hours in length, and are often stackable,” Li added.

On a different front, through its corporate partnerships, Bellevue

University creates modules for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and leadership, tech certificates, and industry certifications in the supply chain, project management and other degrees.

Capital Investments

Hawkins indicated two projects on the Bellevue University campus will change the makeup of the campus.

“We are remodeling the northeast corner of Harvell and Fort Crook,” she explained. “Our project really serves as a catalyst and a foreshadowing of what the city of Bellevue has planned for Fort Crook.

In addition to the new field house, planning is underway for the conversion of the old gym and Durham Administration Building. The

McDonnell said MCC is engaged in long-range planning for a new, 150acre Sarpy County campus site near highways 370 and 50.

“Possible programs to be located at the site could include programs in the health care, transportation, and public service sectors,” he said.

In North Downtown Omaha, Creighton University President Rev. Daniel Hendrickson said the development of softball and baseball complexes will enhance recreation and wellness programs.

“In addition, we are creating new green spaces and safety features for pedestrians and bicyclists that are traveling through campus,” he said.

Another notable addition, last fall the Creighton campus opened a new Jesuit residence.

Roskens Hall (slated to open later this spring).

She noted how it will support formal and informal STEM education innovations with ready-built infrastructure to enhance research impacts and team- and community partnership-building.

Additional investment includes its National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education Center of Excellence at Scott Technology Center; Research, Engagement, and Community Hub in Health and Kinesiology; and a proposed more than 119,000-squarefoot addition and nearly 72,000-square-foot renovation of The Peter Kiewit Institute to meet needs presented significant enrollment growth and other challenges.

Financial assistance

To ensure the next generation has access to higher education, financial assistance programs are needed.

McDonnell said MCC has been instrumental in securing state-appropriated American Rescue Plan Act funds to offer tuition-free education to current high school students.

Following high school graduation, several local universities have assistance programs for students at different income levels and interest areas.

Li highlighted UNO’s Nebraska Promise free tuition program (for students who meet specific criteria), as well as its Omaha Urban Rate Tuition program to enhance access for out-of-state students.

New nursing students at CSM can receive $10,000 annually, courtesy of The Harper Family Foundation.

“With the support of the [National Science Foundation], CSM offers a unique and competitive program for academically talented students who excel in STEM,” Allen said.

“Our prestigious Marie Curie Scholarship provides $20,000 annually for four years. In addition to having access to substantial financial resources and facilities,

scholarship recipients also receive tutoring, undergraduate research opportunities, and top programs like the National Institute of Health and NASA research fellowships.”

In June, CSM was awarded funding from NASA for scholarships for college transfer students who excel in STEM – to the tune of $20,000 annually for tuition for two years.

Hound HQ A JOURNEY FROM INVESTMENT BANKING TO DOGGY DAYCARE

Jacob Sarver’s entrepreneurial story starts with the dream of opening a business in his hometown of Omaha. But when he opened doggy daycare and boarding facility Hound HQ off of West Dodge Road in February, the accomplishment was much more than a business venture, it was personal — right down to childhood connections. Pulling from experience in investment banking and the mentorship he received from a former supervisor, he was able to combine his finance experience with a love for both dogs and Omaha.

Drawing Connections

Hound HQ offers daycare, boarding, and grooming for dogs of all sizes. On the surface, it may seem like a typical doggy daycare business model, but when digging deeper, careful considerations are apparent in every aspect of the business.

Sarver, who had been working in investment banking in Washington, D.C., and Little Rock, Arkansas before that, said he began to experience burnout and was “at a fork in the road.”

He weighed his options of going to business school, joining a startup, or continuing down the corporate finance road — none of it was appealing.

When laying out his options, a perhaps unlikely supporter of his decision to transition into business ownership came to the forefront — his former boss.

“I was talking to my employer in D.C., and he gave me the encouragement. He said if there was one regret that he had it would be that he did not do something like [start a business at a young age],” he said.

The mentorship he received while working with a client who owned fitness clubs became integral when drawing up his business plan.

“My job primarily was to look at acquisitions of other companies to try to grow that footprint out west and to turn around some clubs that were poorly performing. So I got to know the four-wall retail service model pretty well,” he said.

SMALL business LEADERS
I’m not a beat-around-the-bush guy. If there’s ever anything, whether it’s recommendations, suggestions, concerns, questions, I’m here every day from open to close.
- JACOB SARVER, OWNER, HOUND HQ

Taking the Leap

Sarver decided to start a dog boarding business when he and his fiancé noticed less-than-desirable conditions when boarding their two dogs Bourbon and Captain, such as collapsible crates for sleeping or no webcam to check in on their pets.

“The idea came up when I had to travel home for the holidays and we always had to board our dogs … and I always thought I could do better,” he said. “I did a couple of months of homework on whether to buy a small shop somewhere or to start my own and settled on starting my own.”

He moved back home to Omaha to stay close to family for support and began to search for a property.

Almost as though it was kismet, Sarver reached out to a friend at CBRE, who suggested he check out a vacant property near his childhood home. Seeing the potential, he purchased the building at 15721 W. Dodge Rd.

Elevated Daily Comforts

Sarver’s first order of business was ensuring the space for the dogs was safe and comfortable. Hound HQ offers large kennels, and separate spaces for large and small breeds. It also maintains a small staff-to-dog ratio to ensure safety for the pets and the employees.

Sarver said he tailors services to each dog to ease them into the new environment, whether that be a special treat in their kennel or time away from the other animals.

“Overnight is scary for dogs. You’re away from your home, you’re away from the people that you know,” he said.

Part of easing anxiety for pet parents comes in the form of report cards, text updates from staff, and webcams. Sarver wants clients to know that Hound HQ is an open book and they can come armed with ideas.

“I’m not a beat-around-the-bush guy,” he said. “If there’s ever anything, whether it’s recommendations, suggestions, concerns, questions, I’m here every day from open to close.”

Personal Touch

Now that the business has built a solid client base, Sarver isn’t just resting on his laurels. During the first three months of business, Hound HQ is donating a portion of its revenue to the Nebraska Humane Society. His connection circles back to his childhood when visiting NHS became a summer tradition with his grandparents.

“One of the things that I remember most fondly is, to kill an hour on a random Tuesday or Wednesday, we would just go to the NHS and see the dogs that are available for adoption,” he said.

His grandma, a longtime volunteer at NHS, inspired him to do the same.

“When I was in college, I would come back and do walks with my grandma. So, it’s also always been a special place for me,” he said.

Sarver plans to continue community partnerships with other organizations each quarter, whether that be animal rescues or charitable organizations in the metro.

Independent Contractor or Employee?

WHAT EMPLOYERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSIFICATION EFFECTIVE MARCH 11

Misclassifying a worker can have big implications for a business owner when it comes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). At times lines can be blurred and supervisors may be left confused about what work independent contractors should and shouldn’t be responsible for.

The Department of Labor has reversed a 2021 rule classifying employees and independent contractors, thus returning to an analysis previously used. This reset is now effective as of March 11, 2024.

John Barrett, attorney at Koley Jessen, said DOL’s economic realities test now provides a “totality of the circumstances” method of analysis, which classifies workers under the FLSA.

“The DOL’s main goal is to determine whether workers are economically dependent on the hiring party and, if so, classifies them as employees,” Barrett said.

The six factors considered by the DOL for classification under FLSA are:

• Opportunity for profit or loss depending on managerial skill

• Investments by the worker and the employer

• Permanence of the work relationship

• Nature and degree of control

• Whether the work performed is integral to the employer’s business

• Skill and initiative

Under the 2021 rule, more weight was given to two factors: the nature and degree of the worker’s control over their work, and the opportunity for profit or loss, Barrett said.

Now each of the factors is weighed evenly, as they did prior to 2021.

“The DOL will also consider the financial stake and worker’s resources invested in the work,” he said. “This additional factor was previously incorporated into the DOL’s opportunity for profit or loss analysis under the 2021 rule.

“The final rule also revises the ‘integrated unit of production’ language from the 2021 rule, which limited the inquiry into whether the work performed was part of an established unit of the organization’s business. The DOL’s clarification broadens the integration analysis, which now looks at whether work performed is an integral part of the organization’s overall business.”

Determining Classification

Bottom line, the classification is meant to determine whether a worker is dependent on the employer or is in business for themself. Barrett said the framework for determining this classification is intentionally broad.

“Not all factors may be relevant to a given arrangement, and no factors should be considered in isolation,” he said.

Independent contractor arrangements typically involve workers investing in their own equipment, setting their own schedules, marketing their services, providing services to multiple businesses, and working on project-based assignments.

Independent Contractor vs. Employee ▪ Purchases own equipment ▪ Acceptable to work for multiple businesses simultaneously ▪ Has autonomy on how tasks and projects are performed ▪ Considered already trained on job ▪ Company provides equipment ▪ Works for just one company ▪ Work is under the supervision of the company ▪ Trained on how to perform job ▪ Set work hours on company premises 1099 W-2 Independent Contractor Employee ▪ Control over work hours and location of work ▪ Often paid by job or commission and less frequently ▪ Issued a 1099 tax form, pays own taxes ▪ Cannot be fired or quit if it is a breach of contract ▪ Not eligible for employee benefits ▪ Not covered by FLSA ▪ Hourly or salary pay, typically every two weeks ▪ Issued a W-2 tax form, employer withholds taxes ▪ Can be fired or quit at any time ▪ Entitled to complete benefits ▪ Covered by FLSA *source: Internal Revenue Service

7 Brew Coffee

STEEP EXPANSION PLANS ACROSS NEBRASKA

In an industry packed with competition, 7 Brew Coffee franchisee and operator Chase Oberg said customization and kindness are helping them gain market share in Lincoln.

Strong Start in Lincoln

The first location in Nebraska, located at 5655 O St. in Lincoln, opened in December 2022. Less than a year later High Plains Brew, the franchisee holding company, opened a second location at 5302 S. 56th St. in Lincoln.

The Lincoln brand has grown fast, according to Oberg, due to the support of the community. 7 Brew High Plains decided to give back to the community by donating $2,000 to nonprofit CEDARS during the second location’s ribbon cutting. The money will go towards the Carriage House, an expansion of the nonprofit’s emergency shelter that helps homeless teens who are parents.

Comfort in Customization

One of the brand’s greatest strengths is its almost inconceivable customization options.

“We have over 20,000 customizations you can choose from,” he said.

The menu offers a variety of coffee-based options, as well as energy drinks, smoothies, shakes, teas, and a take on Italian soda, called Seven Fizz. There are 29 syrup flavors, 12 of which are available in sugar-free.

“Any of our drinks you can get one-quarter sweet, half-sweet, three-quarter sweet, or extra sweet,” Oberg said. “Really you can adapt to anything, whether you’re trying to be healthier, or just trying to get a really good, flavorful drink.”

If the options are too much, the menu lists the seven original combinations. Or, a “surprise me” option lets “brewistas” craft a drink based on your preferences.

Cultivating Kindness

Next to having a great memory for remembering endless combinations, Oberg said they look for friendly people to represent their brand. Specifically, individuals who are able to take direction.

“We’ve had some great employees that didn’t have coffee experience, but they had a knack for developing and growing, with a great personality,” he said.

For his part, Oberg also had no barista experience before he agreed to open the franchise with his father. Oberg was finishing up his undergrad at the University of ArkansasFayetteville when his father, Ron Oberg, asked if he’d ever heard of 7 Brew.

Fayetteville is just over 20 miles from Rogers, Arkansas, where 7 Brew launched in 2017.

“I always wanted to be an entrepreneur,” said Oberg, who got his bachelor’s degree in business administration. “I never thought I’d be coffee, but I love developing leaders, and I think I’ve found my passion. Coffee just happened to be the industry.”

The father-son duo is joined in the venture by Alex Carney. Together the trio has penned an agreement to open 30 locations in Nebraska and South Dakota. They hope to do so in the next fiveto-six years.

“Our next location will be North Platte, then Norfolk, Kearney, Grand Island, and eventually Omaha and Sioux Falls,” he said

High real estate costs are the biggest factor delaying an Omaha location.

As of March 2024, 7 Brew touts 192 stands in 26 states, including Nebraska’s neighbors Iowa, Colorado, Missouri, and Kansas.

What are the Benefits of Buying a Franchise?

Business ownership through franchising has proven to be an advantageous way for career-minded individuals to establish an entrepreneurial lifestyle. As a means of taking control over one’s destiny and income-generating ability, franchise ownership includes the following benefits:

• Proven business models: Franchisees are given a proven business model to follow. Refined over time, the benefit of adhering to established systems and processes greatly reduces the risk of failure.

• Training: Because franchisors provide their franchisees with comprehensive training, no prior experience is necessary to own and operate the business model.

• Support: One of the best aspects of franchise ownership comes in the close-knit, ongoing support provided by the franchisor.

• Exclusive territories: Franchise owners are granted exclusive territorial rights to operate in a specific area, reducing direct competition and protecting the owner’s target market of opportunity.

• Scalability: Franchise owners benefit from economies of scale when it comes to inventory, purchasing, operations, and even marketing and promotions –exposing franchisees to resources and services at a much lower cost than independent business owners.

• Funding: Because many franchise opportunities have a proven track record of success, banks and other lending institutions are typically more willing to provide favorable terms on finance and funding options.

• Peer network: Additional support for franchise owners also extends to the network of existing franchisees in the system, where the group’s collective advice, insight, and experience are applied to ensure collaborative success for the brand.

• ROI: Individuals who buy a franchise are investing in an asset, which they in turn are responsible for increasing in value. Once the agreement term expires, franchisees have the option to renew or sell their business – often at a handsome return on investment.

• Brand recognition: Most franchises operate under a well-known and established name, which instills trust and reassures consumers.

THE FRANCHISEE: ECOMAIDS OF GREATER OMAHA

Q&A:

Tell us about the business model of the Franchise? Ecomaids is a residential cleaning company that is eco-friendly, all-natural, and allergen and toxin free. We use a color-coded cleaning system that prevents cross contamination and leaning products certified by Green Seal and EPA Safer Choice. We are fully bonded and insured with a professionally trained staff that is screened and authorized to work in the USA. No independent contractors. We are trusted by thousands of families.

Why did you choose this industry? I chose residential cleaning company because I knew I could teach employees the cleaning process, and I was really impressed with the ecofriendly products. My passion is also engaging with people. This industry provides that opportunity with my team, customers and the community. Also, I wanted to build a team and be a woman leader and inspire women.

Why did you choose this franchise? I wanted to be a woman-owned business where I could inspire women. This franchise allows me to manage young women and teach them to not only be cleaners, but also to inspire them to be good people in the community. I have an opportunity to model and teach life skills that they can utilize in both the industry and community. This tiered model allows my techs to be promoted to higher positions.

What was the process of starting your franchise? Blake Martin from FranNet helped us explore options through figuring out our strengths and interests. He helped us identify several franchise options. We chose Ecomaids because we felt it fit our strengths. Once we decided on Ecomaids, we purchased it, went through training and opened for business in March 2023.

What challenges have you faced? Some challenges we face is making sure we stay consistent and efficient each and every day. We are improving daily and learning new techniques to help us. I also had to be okay with firing toxic employees quickly. I want a positive culture and will not have drama or negativity in the work environment. One negative employee can bring an entire team down.

What have been your biggest wins? My biggest wins have been hitting over 100 Five star Google reviews before year one. Also creating a positive culture in the work environment and teaching and modeling positive social and communication skills to my cleaning techs. Growing to 75 recurring customers in less than a year.

How have you grown? As a business we have grown quickly through customer referrals, word of mouth, and positive Google reviews. I now have three teams due to increased business. My team has grown professionally by learning more efficient techniques, building relationships with customers, and gaining confidence in the cleaning process. As an owner, I have grown in my leadership in the community and getting involved.

What does the future hold? Opportunities for the future are bright. We are just nearing year one, we are becoming more and more recognized in the community as a good and reliable company that delivers great service. As a business owner, I have been engaging with other community leaders through chamber events, women events, and social events. Continuing to grow as a leader in the community and build relationships is key.

After acquiring the Little King franchise operation in 2021, Lockwood Development is announcing that the firm’s first Omaha Little King store opened to the public on November 1, with a Grand Opening featuring the Creighton Volleyball team scheduled for Saturday, November 5. The store, located at 8602 West Dodge Road, represents a step forward for both the brand and its footprint in the Omaha area. “Our new store is very close to where the very first Little King store was located when it opened in 1969,” said Chip James, president and CEO of Lockwood Development. “That’s no coincidence. We’re truly inspired by the roots of this historic franchise, and we look forward to carrying that spirit forward to loyal Little King customers, as well as a new generation of Omaha residents.” The 1500-square-foot store combines modern design and an inviting dining area with classic Little King branding and artwork. Customers can expect to order from Little King’s beloved menu featuring subs and sandwiches made with bread baked in store and fresh-sliced meat, as well as soups and desserts, while taking advantage of a variety of conveniences, including a drive-thru. Day to day operations at the 86th and Dodge location, as well as the operation of Lockwood Development’s subsequent stores, wil be overseen by Mark Edwards, an Omaha native who grew up in the fast-food business. “It’s an honor to merge the industry I’m passionate about with a brand that means a great deal to me and so many families in Omaha,” said Edwards. “Little King has more than 50 years of rich history in our area, and now we get the opportunity to move it forward, modernize it, and highlight the very best of what it has to offer.” The new store is the first in a series of new locations James, Edwards, and the team at Lockwood Development plan to open in Omaha and Lincoln. About Little King Founded in Omaha in 1969 by Sid Wertheim, Little King Deli & Subs is known for its deli-style sub sandwiches, made with bread baked fresh on site and meat sliced to order. In 2001, Wertheim’s son Bob took over the company before its sale to Lockwood Development in 2021. INTEGRITY AS MARKET INEFFICIENCY

In 2023, the International Association of Better Business Bureaus (IABBB) embarked on a mission to uncover consumer sentiments and business preferences through an extensive survey of about 2,500 consumers from the U.S. and Canada.

Among the myriad factors consumers consider when choosing a company, honesty and integrity emerged as the most important attributes, with 59% of respondents affirming its significance. This surpassed conventional determinants like competitive pricing, good reputation, customer service quality, and positive reviews and ratings. It also underscored the enduring importance of ethical principles in consumer decision-making. Notably, this sentiment cut across all age demographics as the most important attributes of a business, from those aged 18 to 24 to those aged 65 and above.

In an era characterized by rapid technological advancements and shifting consumer trends, the enduring relevance of honesty and integrity highlights a persistent market inefficiency. Despite the convenience of modernday consumerism and the abundance of bargain-hunting opportunities, customers continue to prioritize businesses that uphold ethical standards. While these principles may seem straightforward, many businesses and nonprofits often overlook both in the pursuit of profit.

Recognizing the paramount importance of ethical business practices, the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

STUDENT: HEATHER RIENSCHE CURRENTLY STUDYING AT: UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT LINCOLN MAJOR/AREA OF FOCUS: ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING ANTICIPATED GRADUATION DATE: MAY 2026

introduced the BBB Torch Awards for Ethics program over a quarter-century ago. In 2023, this initiative expanded with the introduction of the BBB Spark Awards, aimed at recognizing leaders under 45 who exemplify a commitment to ethical conduct and customer-centric values. These awards spotlight entities that prioritize crucial attributes such as character, culture, customers and community impact.

Unlike many accolades, participation in the Torch and Spark Awards entails no financial burden or membership requirements. Whether BBB Accredited or not, businesses, charities and the leaders of both are encouraged to partake in this recognition process. It is a celebration of what our communities can be proud of: Those who do the right thing regardless of who is around. Applicants undergo an online evaluation, which assesses the organization’s leadership character, cultural authenticity, customer relationship prioritization and community engagement efforts.

The BBB Torch Awards Luncheon, scheduled for Tuesday, September 24, promises to be a momentous occasion celebrating exemplary leaders and organizations for their ethical endeavors. Further details about the application process and event can be found at bbb.org/omahatorch. The BBB awards program provides a platform for the most deserving to shine, emphasizing integrity and ethics — the most crucial attributes in the minds of consumers.

BBB STUDENT OF INTEGRITY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

What does Integrity mean to you?

To me, integrity is about upholding values at all times. Sometimes that means doing the right thing when no one is watching. Other times, that means rejecting peers when they would rather you make another choice.

When joining the workforce, what are your expectations for an employer/organization?

When thinking about the workforce, I want to join an organization that impresses me; I hope to find a company that cares about its community, clients, and employees. In engineering, this is especially important because of the lasting impacts engineering firms have on their communities. As I consider the companies I am currently hoping to intern with, I am most interested in the companies that talk to prospective students about serving and uplifting the people they encounter.

As an SOI recipient, how has the scholarship helped you with your educational journey?

The Student of Integrity Scholarship has been a blessing to my educational journey. The financial assistance has helped me pursue my dreams. Going into collage, I chose to major in microbiology. I still hoped to work with water resources, but I thought microbiology was the best fit for me. During my first semester, a few meaningful conversations caused me to consider engineering. After making the change to environmental engineering, I love my new major and classwork. I am so grateful for the assistance you provided, and I look forward to my coming semesters.
