SHONNA DORSEY LEADS NEBRASKA TECH COLLABORATIVE

There’s a lot of important work ahead for Shonna Dorsey, the new executive director for Nebraska Tech Collaborative (NTC), an Aksarben Foundation workforce initiative. In her role, she oversees the day-to-day operations, goals and relationships for the organization.

“I basically lead all strategic initiatives for the NTC … I’m able to leverage a lot of relationships that I’ve built over the years to help move these initiatives forward,” she said.

Dorsey fostered those relationships throughout her tech career, which included positions with Mutual of Omaha, a leadership training and consultation company, and AIM Institute, among others. She received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in management information systems from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Aksarben Foundation functions as the parent organization of NTC, which serves the entire state, Dorsey said.

“They provide basically all of the administrative and other supports that the Nebraska Tech Collaborative needs to operate so that we can focus on our mission. It’s a great relationship,” she explained. “The simplest way I can describe NTC is that we are a convener and collaborator with leaders throughout the state to help advance the

state’s talent, attraction and retention goals for both tech workers and tech startups ... NTC has really big goals, which is great, and I love aspirational goals. But it’s important for us to focus.”

NTC’s focus areas include emerging talent (a tech internship program and an immersive summer program for teachers), skilled talent (connecting engineers to startups for product development support and formalizing a process to streamline the placement of laid-off tech workers) and innovators (connecting Nebraska innovators in an annual cohort to grow the startup ecosystem and connecting high-growth tech startups with Nebraska companies to pitch their products).

“One of my immediate goals, when I came in, was to get a really good data source for tech workforce trends so that we can track how we’re progressing toward our goal,” Dorsey said. “I’ve completed the first phase of that, and now I’m working with some other partners on creating a more robust solution.”

Dorsey has also taken a close look at the longer-term goals established prior to her involvement with NTC.

“The goals of the NTC are to increase the number of tech workers by 10,000, increase the number of startups by 300, increase diversity in

INNOVATORS

tech by 40% women and 20% underrepresented groups,” Dorsey said. “Lofty goals — amazing — but all to be completed by 2025. Knowing that it’s not likely that we’ll get there, which is totally fine, we are thinking, ‘How do we carve out a chunk of that?’ And so, in visiting with our leadership team, and also looking at trends in the workforce, we’ve decided to focus on engineering talent, specifically, this year. How do we increase the number of engineers here? How do we retain the engineers we have?”

Nebraska Tech Collaborative launched in 2019, and Dorsey said she’s proud of what it’s already accomplished, including supporting LB1112, a Nebraska legislative bill requiring computer technology coursework for high school graduation.

“That bill has recently been amended. So, we’ll see what happens next,” Dorsey said. “But just being a part of that process and having any influence in the outcome is incredible for the NTC.”

NTC is already finding its place in the local tech community, Dorsey said.

“There’s so much great work happening. An example is that we have a lot of local groups that are focusing on helping more diverse people get into IT like Mystery Code Society, Code Black, and Girls Code Lincoln. I have always thought it would be really great if these groups were better connected so that they can do more of that great work — and then taking those connections and helping the students they serve get into some more advanced training programs as it makes sense, if the desire is there, and then connecting that training to placement on the back end,” she said. “So, what NTC is really good at is helping to make those connections and bringing these pieces together to serve the candidate, future diverse talent, and the employers who are seeking the talent.”

Supporting the tech community’s professionals has a larger impact, Dorsey added, in a rising-tide-lifts-all-boats kind of way.

“The jobs that we’re talking about are some of the highest-paying jobs out there. There’s great work in other industries. But in tech, these jobs can easily get into the hundred-thousands, depending on the person’s skill set and the demand for the role,” she explained. “So, with that, we can really help influence the state’s economy by helping more people get into these high-paying jobs.”

Dorsey has an impressive professional background, but she calls herself a late starter.

“I had my first real internship at 28 years old. I went through the master’s program at UNO and thought I should try to get an internship. I ended up at a help desk and worked my way up,” she said. “Prior to that, I spent many years waiting tables. And I believe that that helped me tremendously as far as dealing with different customer issues that came up when I was working in tech. And it helped me become a very strong business partner; I was marrying my technical skills that I was developing with the customer service skills that I had honed over many years.”

As she advanced her tech career, Dorsey eventually was approached about starting Interface: The Web School.

“I started that company without a lot of any real business leadership background. But it seemed like a great opportunity, and I’m often a person that will just look at the situation and say, ‘What’s the risk? What’s the reward?’ If the reward seems like it could be great, that means there’s obviously a big chance that if it fails, it would be very difficult. But I just push through things constantly,” she said. “I feel like failure is possible, but I like continuing to get up and move forward. That’s how I operate.”

The AIM Institute eventually acquired Interface. Dorsey took on a new opportunity with AIM followed by consulting work and then IT leadership positions at Mutual of Omaha.

“While I was there, I helped launch a program where we took existing employees in customer service roles or other business roles, sent them through a code school program, and then placed them in technical jobs,” she said. “From what I know, the retention rate from that program is still very high. People who’ve gone through it, they’re still invested in the company and continue to grow their careers within Mutual, which is outstanding.”

Mutual of Omaha Chief Information Officer Michael Lechtenberger, also the executive committee chair for NTC, connected Dorsey to the opportunity with NTC. Dorsey was working in Florida at the time.

“I was working remotely, I had my team, I’d been promoted to a manager,” she said. “But the more we talked about it, and the more I began to understand what the NTC is and how it could impact this state, I thought this is probably the thing I need to pursue,” she said. “So, I applied and was selected thank goodness. And now I’m here and having a blast.”

Innovation in the Heartland

BALANCING INSPIRATION WITH FUNDING

TECH STARTUPS

Nebraska’s tech industry has come a long way over the past few decades, creating an innovative community spurred by colleges and universities and supported by several organizations looking to help bring inspiration to the market.

In the tech space, there have been many recent successes that have put Nebraska on the map: Spreetail, a Lincoln-based e-commerce company received a $208 million funding round in February; this past July, Lincoln’s Monolith, a producer of clean hydrogen, carbon black and ammonia, received a $300 million round.

When it comes to funding at the early stages, however, it can be hard to come by.

“Like most ecosystems, talent and funding are pressing issues, particularly available pre-seed/seed funding in the range of $100,000 to $1 million and management talent to help move early startup businesses forward,” said Brad Roth, president and executive director of NUtech Ventures and associate vice chancellor of technology development at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“Every early-stage founder or somebody that’s just starting

out, at some point sooner or later, will need access to capital and that’s a really tough thing to come by,” said Jake Burklund, president of the board of Scale Omaha.

Crunchbase reported that of the top 26 states in early-stage funding activity in second quarter/third quarter 2021, six were in the Midwest. Of these, half (Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota) were up between 500% and nearly 700% and the other three (Illinois, Colorado and Missouri) grew between 86% and 210%. Nebraska, however, was nowhere to be found.

Good Ideas Abound

With the number of ideas and innovation being brought forth by Nebraska entrepreneurs, local organizations are spurring more efforts to bring those ideas to fruition.

Nebraska Enterprise fund, which provides funding and loans to small and micro-businesses, is administering $10.5 million in State Small Business Credit Initiative funding through the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.

According to Executive Director Jim Reiff in a press release,

IN

the SSBCI funds administered by NEF will focus primarily on what are termed the SEDI populations – social, economic, disadvantaged individual business owners.

Pitch competitions are also giving opportunity to newly-formed businesses such as Pitch Black, hosted by the Midlands African Chamber, UNO’s BigIdea! Pitch Contest and Get Started Omaha. These efforts, however, can only accommodate for some of the ideas on the table.

“Nebraska has a vibrant startup community in ag tech, food tech, fintech, HR tech, sports tech, among others,” Roth said. “Additionally, Nebraska is ripe for continued development and expansion of the ag tech and food tech market verticals in view

of the existing customers in production agriculture and food manufacturing.”

Experts agree that potential has never been the problem in Nebraska, a fact that invigorates various entities set up to foster and grow the state’s startups. Burklund’s organization, for example, broke away from The Startup Grind to adjust to more local market forces and opportunities in the belief that connecting entrepreneurs and various resources, financial or otherwise, best starts at home.

“Our mission is to gather, educate and inspire local entrepreneurs and hopefully facilitate meaningful connections

through events,” he said. “As an organization, we really want to get all of the local entrepreneurs together and anyone that’s really adjacent to that as well, connecting with the investment community and supporting organizations around Omaha.

“Being our own organization, we can focus on our own ecosystem, which does have differences from Silicon Valley and even places like Austin, New York and those types of cities, which are a little bit different.”

NuTech Ventures, a nonprofit affiliate of the University of Nebraska providing technology commercialization services for the UNL and University of Nebraska at Kearney campuses, has also leveraged the power of partnerships both inside the state and with entities in other states that mirror Nebraska’s opportunities and challenges.

“Certainly, it is important for NUtech to continue to strive to maximize the opportunities we have to commercialize more university technology with the aim to provide broad, real-world impact,” Roth said. “We are committed to this mission and seek creative ways to grow our business and impact.

“Part of the solution is to partner judiciously, yet broadly, with our ecosystem partners on, and outside of, the university campus. To that end, we have existing partnerships and dialogue with most, if not all, of the entrepreneurship programs on campus, as well as with Nebraska Business Development Center, NMotion, LPED, Invest Nebraska, Innosphere Ventures in Fort Collins, Colorado, the NSF Great Lakes I-Corps Hub, Pipeline Entrepreneurs in Kansas City, Destination Startup in Boulder, Colorado, and others.”

Solutions

These partnerships notwithstanding, Roth said there are steps Nebraska leadership could take that would have an immediate and substantial impact on the startup ecosystem right here at home.

“The whole matter of pre-seed or seed capital is a really big deal. There’s a lot of money that’s on the sidelines right now,” he said. “Having a pre-seed match through the state would immediately help, having more access to pre-seed capital that could be used as a match for a lot of the state programs. And

I’m talking in the $100,000 to $1 million range, which is really a sweet spot and really hard money to get sometimes. At that point in their development, startup companies are very early, and the risk is pretty high.”

In the meantime, progress comes slowly and generally one relationship at a time. Beeso Studio, a four-year-old organization that partners and advises selected startups in exchange for a stake in each company, provides the intensive one-on-one management acumen that’s often hard for startups to hire on their own.

“We provide four main services,” said John Bunting, CEO. “First one is fundraising; we support and help our startups raise capital from angel investors, from friends and families, and when they’re at the right point, we make introductions to VCs and such.

“When you’re at the very early stage, funding is definitely local, definitely from who you know and who’s in your network. But as you get traction, revenue and growth, your audience expands, investors you can talk to also expands and we support and help with that. If you’re very early on, at the cocktail napkin stage, a VC is not going to talk to you; we help guide and support and give strategy and direction, pitch decks and everything around fundraising.”

Management is Key

Bunting said the organization’s other areas of expertise –building technology in-house, providing marketing education and support and developing sales channels – all combine to make companies more sound from an operational perspective, things prospective investors are looking for.

“One challenge for investors is finding good quality deals,” he said. “We sort of de-risk a lot of the normal challenges to investing in startups, because we apply a lot of control and guardrails for the tech startups in our portfolio. That’s one particular advantage for investors to work with us.”

Beeso Studio works with companies at all stages of development and Bunting said the challenges of funding don’t always lie at the feet of the startup. Often, potential investors need to be educated to recognize opportunities as well.

“Don’t get me wrong; these investors are very astute with

respect to business. They’ve run successful businesses. They’re very familiar with real estate investing and other types of investing,” he said. “But when it comes to a tech startup, we have to educate them around cap tables and what return they should expect, when they should expect that return and what they should expect in general with the companies over the next several years. There’s a lot of education that we’ve been doing there to get them to the point where they’re comfortable with making that investment because it is a new thing to do.”

As for the workforce that will support and advance the state’s startup ecosystem, Burklund said radical ideas are what’s needed to spark more attention to the work and opportunities that exist here already, which would help attract and retain the best minds available.

“I’ve heard this quote thrown around a few times here:

Nebraska doesn’t have a talent problem or a talent attraction problem, they have an interesting company problem,” he said. “People these days, specifically the newer generation, want to work on really interesting ideas.

“They want to work with great people and they want to do meaningful work. In Silicon Valley, there’s a ton of interesting, grandiose visions and I think Nebraska could use more of that; more founders with really crazy, big, fun ideas. I think that is the best tool that we could have in attracting talent and retaining the talent that is already here. Hiring remote employees doesn’t necessarily solve the problem of attracting and growing companies here locally as it just doesn’t have the significant impact that we would hope it to have. We really want those employees to be here and live here and enjoy Nebraska the same way that we do.”

TRANSFORMING NEBRASKA’S BUSINESS LANDSCAPE

In Nebraska, innovation can be seen far and wide across all industries. Organizations are cultivating talent and showing what a little grit and community support can achieve.

Ag Tech Disruptors

Hannah Klitz of Invest Nebraska spoke to envelope-pushing efforts through the lens of The Combine, an AgTech incubator.

“The Combine has numerous companies that range from Sentinel Fertigation, which helps farmers manage nitrogen through fertigation, to Bluestem Biosciences, which is working to enable existing infrastructure in the Midwest for industrialized synthetic biology,” the communications coordinator said.

Technologies may vary widely, but founders generally have a common goal: “Positively impacting agriculture in our state, nation and even globally,” Klitz stated.

The Combine accepts applications from food and ag tech startups in Nebraska on a rolling basis and assists on an individual basis — everything from in-person and virtual curriculum for initial goal-setting to coworking at Nebraska Innovation Campus.

“There are many innovating startups founded by Nebraska residents, but the work we are doing also attracts companies to relocate to Nebraska,” Klitz added of her team’s goals. “Our goal is to be a program that ag tech startups want to be a part of so much so that they relocate to our state, which has already been the case a few times.”

Specific “stars” on The Combine front include Grain Weevil, a robot that is transforming the industry for the better by handling an array of functions within grain bins.

“Grain bins are a dirty, dangerous place,” Klitz explained. “So, with the help of the Grain Weevil robot, farmers do not have to crawl into grain bins where they are at risk for a life-threatening situation.”

Omaha-based Scoular is powering innovation in the grains industry

and via other ag supply chain solutions.

“This is a very dynamic and exciting time in the agriculture industry,” said CEO Paul Maass in early March. “Innovations related to production agriculture (that support production improvement) give me confidence that the agriculture industry will continue to increase production, and with less inputs.”

It’s about “making more with less.”

“Investments in innovations that enable efficiency growth will continue, not only the agronomic growth, but growth in automation –which is especially important now when there are not enough talent resources available,” Maass explained.

When asked about breakthroughs in this space, Maass spoke to technology disruptions.

“ … we are pushing our organization to remain externally focused, engaging with new innovations or technology capabilities, and allowing those experiences to shape our strategic planning,” he said.

Specific examples of “transformative,” company-driven innovations span far southwestern Nebraska (Grainton), whereby Maass said Scoular expanded its capabilities to ship via 110-car shuttle trains – a marked improvement.

“This improvement will expand the market reach of grain produced in this region,” he said. “Beyond our grain facilities, we created Petsource to provide freeze-dried pet food ingredients to the growing pet food industry.”

At present, Petsource is expanding its production capabilities in Seward, tripling its size to fulfill customer demand.

“Freeze-dried pet food ingredients, produced in Nebraska, are another example of adding value that ultimately improves the Nebraska food and agriculture industries,” Maass summed up.

Evolving Silicon Prairie

TThe Managing Attorney of 402Legal, Karine E. Sokpoh, put on her Midlands African Chamber (MAC) leadership hat to address traction related to startups in the state. Sokpoh, who is the CEO and founder of MAC, isolated resources available through “various entities in the community,” with a notable caveat.

“There are a plethora of different nonprofits and for-profit companies that have programs and resources and different funding opportunities to assist startups, such as our members Nebraska Enterprise Fund and Omaha 100. There are grants such as the prototype grant, the SBIR /STTR programs through the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.”

However, Sokpoh underscored how very little of that funding went to BIPOC (Black, indigenous, people of color), or immigrants or refugee entrepreneurs.

Enter organizations such as MAC, which Sokpoh characterized as a

catalyst and accelerant within the broader ecosystem.

“The Midlands African Chamber is a Nebraska-only Black chamber, which serves primarily Black and underserved entrepreneurs,” she continued. “We connect, champion and empower small businesses, in a bid to grow economic equity. We help traditionally marginalized community members access resources and opportunities to build intergenerational wealth through entrepreneurship.”

It will have served a reported 50 small diverse businesses, funding a collective $82,000, since 2020.

“We offer many different programs and services to assist startups and entrepreneurs,” Sokpoh stated. “We are currently operating our first cohort of the Pitch Black Accelerator program. This equips entrepreneurs with vital training and resources during a nine-week program and, at the end of the program, they each receive $1,000 for startup costs – not to mention, if they win the competition, they can get up to a $15,000 equity-free award.”

Lastly, Sokpoh underscored heightened exposure for MAC members, noting their ability to connect with mentors and other companies who can assist in establishing and growing respective businesses.

The Greater Omaha Chamber Vice President, Economic Development Mark Norman further spoke to support and resources through the “lifecycle” of organizations at various stages and across myriad backgrounds.

TRANSFORMING NEBRASKA’S BUSINESS LANDSCAPE

“Omaha remains a highly competitive city for prospective businesses looking to set up an operation,” Norman said. “Corporations are drawn to communities and to specific areas within those communities that are demonstrating growth, those areas that provide the lifestyle and amenities that their workforce of the future desire.”

Norman isolated Omaha’s “urban core” as providing a lifestyle and amenities that continue to attract companies.

“But we cannot relax,” he said. “We must continue to improve and tell our story to prospective companies to build on this growth.”

Norman said the chamber is committed to aggressively recruiting companies to the area.

“We assist all the parties involved in a project, from first initial contact to final announcement, and then establish a long-term relationship to ensure continued growth through our Business Retention and Expansion program,” he said. “These activities can range from facilitation to business growth incentives, connections to workforce resources, to assistance with navigating the entitlement and regulation processes.”

Norman further isolated, within the urban core, Mutual of Omaha’s investment in the area via Project Beacon.

“It demonstrates that the value proposition of our region, and the urban core, is still strong,” he said.

More broadly, Norman noted: “The chamber has made a commitment to grow our urban core by 30,000 new residents and 30,000 new jobs over the next 20 years.”

He indicated projects like those undertaken by Mutual add to the metro’s excitement and vibrancy.

Deepening Roots for HQs

Leadership with Mutual of Omaha spoke at greater length to Project Beacon, its new facility that Chief Customer Service Officer Shannon Hite said will be a “beacon” for both the company and community.

“ … this new facility will be a ‘beacon,’ both for Mutual of Omaha and the City of Omaha,” Hite said. “It will offer our associates a new, modern workplace that will support collaboration, innovation and hybrid work on behalf of our customers. It will also add to Omaha’s skyline and urban core, standing at 677 feet with 44 floors, making it

the tallest building in the region.”

Officially kicked off in January, the project spans 800,000 square feet of amenities, conference, collaboration, and individual workspaces, with a “sky lobby” featuring food services, a fitness center, wellness service, concierge technical support, and flexconference and meeting space.

Over the next six to eight weeks, most of the construction will reportedly be below-ground, followed by construction of a 15-story parking garage through 2023, and tower levels build mid-2024.

Hite also acknowledged the redevelopment of its current Midtown campus.

“We envision new vitality both downtown and in Midtown, much of it driven by the modern Omaha streetcar,” she added.

Hite indicated its commitment further spans $6.2 million in funding to 120 area nonprofits through its foundation in 2022 alone.

In its 25th year, Omaha-born Scooter’s Coffee is growing its local and statewide commitments, while also representing one of the fastest-growing specialty coffee drive-through companies in the country – on pace for more than 1,000 stores nationwide in 2024.

“Our dedicated franchise partners have opened approximately 40 new stores in Omaha and surrounding communities over the past 10 years,” said Chief Community Officer Bill Black.

Also, its supply chain company, Harvest Roasting, launched a new Omaha distribution center to ramp up production and support systems for franchisees. Additionally, Scooter’s relocated its Sapp Brothers Drive headquarters to a new, more than 101,000-square-foot space at 11808 Miracle Hills Drive.

“Moving our corporate offices allowed us to expand our affiliated internal roasting and packing operations at our former headquarters building,” Black explained.

Such investments, according to Black, resulted from the unprecedented brand growth associated with the drive-through kiosk franchise model, which resonated with customers during the pandemic.

Beyond physical spaces, Black said Scooter’s is hosting its annual Grow Conference, which will attract 1,500-plus execs, franchise owners and coffee growers to CHI Health Center Omaha in late March.

Additionally, since 2018, Scooter’s has raised more than $154,000

for Wounded Warriors Family Support to fund services such as a caregiver respite program that helped 44 families. Current local support also extends to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands, with a portion of proceeds supporting the national organization and local chapter.

“Across our franchise network, we promote giveback programs and days of giving to support important causes in the hometown communities of our Scooter’s Coffee stores,” Black said, referring to everything from coat to blood drives.

Game Changer for Student Athletes

It’s been called the most significant change in college sports in a generation: NIL (name, image, likeness). More specifically, this transformation reflects NCAA rule changes and state legislation to afford protections and opportunities to athletes to sell their personal brand/NIL.

Nebraska Athletics announced #NILbraska in June 2021, an initiative to “prepare student-athletes to take advantage” of NIL legislation. It was touted at the time as an “example of Nebraska leading the nation.”

Former Athletic Director Bill Moos furthermore touted its status as the first athletic department to partner with Lincoln-based Opendorse. Opendorse is described as a NIL deals platform and marketplace for athletes to build and monetize their “NIL value.” More recently, in an updated blog post from late January on its site, Opendorse provided a state-by-state breakdown of NIL legislation. While the reported fourth state to enact such laws, Nebraska’s legislative language was written in “optin” fashion, meaning institutions in the state could remain under NCAA regulations until adoption of the state law, resulting in a “split.” Creighton University has decided to apply the law, while the University of NebraskaLincoln is remaining under the school’s policy. Further amendments to NIL regulations, courtesy of additional legislation, were also noted.

Teresa Freisen and Kristin Stone started SheMate in 2021, reportedly as a “response to inequities in newly developed NIL opportunities for college athletes.”

“When we started SheMate, we thought we would be an NIL business for women athletes,” Friesen said. “We quickly discovered that we could do more and we could do better if we worked in partnership with NIL companies, instead of creating another NIL business.”

Since this adjustment, the CEO said SheMate pays women (via reputable NIL companies) to hold virtual mentoring sessions for young people that look up to them.

“Consequently, we have developed great partnerships within the NIL ecosystem, while further progressing the SheMate mission to better the sports industry for women through community and publicity,” Friesen said.

In fact, during its first year, 200-plus athletes applied monthly to engage in SheMate work.

“We are now working on strengthening our community and offering more opportunities for women to connect with, learn from, and tangibly

support one another,” Friesen added.

In recognition of women athletes not getting enough paid sponsorships and the lack of access to positive role models, Friesen said SheMate solves both problems: paying women to offer virtual group mentoring for middle and high school students, while the NIL “world” is allowing SheMate to pay these athletes for their work.

“We are constantly driven by our mission to increase positive representation of women on-screen,” she summed up. “Seeing women athletes on screens means seeing expanded views of how women ‘should’ dress, act or style; it means seeing women who expand our examples of what it means to be strong, driven and motivated.”

Friesen continued: “When we increase this positive, diverse and intersectional representation of women on-screen, more youth feel seen, understood and encouraged for their futures.”

Women’s History Month HONORING

FEMALE ETHICAL LEADERSHIP

March is Women’s History Month and the Business Ethics Alliance is busy preparing for the first major Signature Event of 2023 on March 23 in which we explore Women in Leadership with two female leadership powerhouses in the Omaha business community: Karen Hudgins, President and Chief Operating Officer of Signature Performance and Aileen Warren, President and CEO of ICAN. Some of the discussion content will be taken from an article on the Glass Cliff phenomenon co-written by Dr. Regina Taylor, Assistant Professor of Management at Creighton University, Creighton graduate Olivia Moyle, and Dr. Sijing Wei, Assistant Professor of Accounting and Business Intelligence and Analytics.

The Glass Cliff phenomenon suggests that women are more likely to advance into higher positions of leadership during times when an organization is experiencing significant financial duress, cultural chaos, and/or other types of crises when failure is likely. This disappointing, fragile, and potentially harmful phenomenon may be especially true if ethical transgressions are involved. One 2019 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that “women incur greater penalties for ethical transgressions because of persistent gender stereotypes.” In honor of Women’s History Month, let’s look at a few other findings about ethical behavior among female leaders.

A 2015 study from the Pew Research Center on Women and Leadership found that “women are perceived to have an edge … when it comes to being honest and ethical” especially when it comes to “providing fair pay and benefits and offering mentorship.” This same study also found that women and men are equally capable of being good business leaders although gender stereotypes exist. A 2016 research report from the National Business Ethics Survey conducted in 2013 on behalf of the Ethics and Compliance Initiative (ECI) found that “male and female leaders act similarly when it comes to ethics.” Shared priorities include maintaining company integrity, meeting business goals, and treating all employees fairly and with dignity. However,

MARCH WOMEN

So what is the bottom line for women in leadership positions? Leadership at all levels makes a difference in organizational culture, especially when it comes to ethical behavior. Management, human resources, and industrial and organizational psychology studies all help inform ethical practices that support balanced, equitable, and healthy organizational culture practices which in turn increase positive outcomes in an organization’s bottom line.

In a world where only 10% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women, the Greater Omaha area is fortunate to have so many female leaders to look up to as beacons of ethical leadership. Our March Women in

female employees, including female leaders, “face tougher ethics environments than male employees.”

A 2020 blog from the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation suggests that “overall, women have been found to be less tolerant … of a wide variety of unethical negotiating strategies.” The blog also points out that in addition to being more socialized to be more ethical negotiators, women tend to internalize moral traits more strongly due to a more communal and relationship-driven approach toward others.

Finally, a 2020 study published in the Journal of Research in Education found that female leaders in higher education (director, dean vice-president, president) internalized and lived out an ethical framework based on social responsibility. These women saw ethical leadership as much bigger than a role or title and were most concerned with equity and fairness.

Leadership Signature Event speakers are excellent examples of strong women who provide ethical leadership to their organizations and the Omaha community. At the Business Ethics Alliance, we are fortunate to have exceptionally dedicated, capable, and strong female leadership in our founding, daily operations, Governing Board, and Trustee Partner ranks. Thank you to Dr. Beverly Kracher, one of our founders, who had the vision to collaborate with business leaders on the heels of the Enron scandal over 15 years ago to form the Alliance and provide high-quality business ethics education. Thank yous also go out to the women who provide current leadership, guidance, and support for the Alliance:

ANNOUNCING A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE FUTURE OF LINCOLN

On February 22, in a room full of over 700 business and community leaders at our Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting, I was honored to present the Vitality Lincoln strategic plan publicly for the first time. The plan, which outlines a vision for Lincoln’s economic future and how to achieve it, was launched last summer at our Economic Development Breakfast in partnership with two top consulting firms, a 42-member steering committee and 3,500 community members. Led by two top strategic planning consultants from Broad Ripple Strategies and DMOProz, Vitality Lincoln details unique pathways to execute the initiatives included in the plan. With a focus on collaboration, the Vitality Lincoln steering committee identified key areas of focus, which include:

• The development of distinctive destination assets and facilities to attract visitors and events to Lincoln, including plans for a downtown convention center, a reimagined Lincoln-based music festival and the creation of dynamic, connected mixed-use activity hubs across the community.

• A detailed focus on diverse talent and our ability to better attract, retain and grow companies by providing a sustainable base of trained talent. As a top challenge identified by our local business community, Vitality Lincoln outlines new opportunities to connect people with Lincoln’s workforce and educational programs by establishing a coordinated career pathway system.

• A commitment to providing the land and infrastructure necessary to accelerate the vibrant and balanced growth of our community. This includes creating an accelerated infrastructure investment task force, optimizing policies to address affordable housing challenges and ongoing discussions about the construction of the East Beltway, which will position Lincoln to both accelerate growth and streamline the process for developers in our community.

• The rollout of new targeted economic development initiatives that capitalize on Lincoln’s unique assets. By implementing an integrated, multifaceted business recruitment
