A Reunion That Demonstrates The True Power Of Partnership
From peers to partners, trust is the bond that brings CEO and founder, Mary Vandenack and managing member Rachel Truhlsen to practice together as part of Vandenack Weaver Truhlsen. Early in their careers, Mary Vandenack and Rachel Truhlsen had the opportunity to work together, at the law rm owned by Vandenack’s father. Since then, they have been on parallel paths – establishing their own law rms; focusing on estate planning, wealth preservation, business, tax planning, and more; sharing a client-rst philosophy; and pursuing philanthropic and leadership experiences with other women. Now the two are united again, practicing together at Vandenack Weaver Truhlsen.

NEW beginnings
ZAISS & COMPANY OPENS NEW HEADQUARTERS Approaching 33 years in business on April 1, Zaiss & Company has established itself with a unique “hybrid marketing research firm and advertising agency” niche. President and Chief Creative Officer Wendy Wiseman indicated that the Omaha-based firm is positioned to “grow exponentially” in the next five years by leveraging its legacy, and within fresh digs at Blackstone Plaza (formerly Kiewit Plaza). “The new space is breathing new life into our culture of trust and respect, and the joy we have when we’re together as a team and with our clients,” Wiseman said. “These true partnerships are gold, and together we will continue to do great things.”
An Innovative Approach
Founded in 1989 by Tracy Zaiss, the eponymous Zaiss & Company is self-described as a “full service customer-based marketing and communications firm.” Its team provides strategic planning, creative development, media services, web design, social media and production from its headquarters at 35th and Farnam streets. When Zaiss launched the firm, Wiseman said there were few agencies run by women.
“Though women were rising in the agency management ranks locally and nationally then, there hasn’t been significant traction in more women achieving executive leadership positions,” she added. Wiseman brought experience as a director of marketing or advertising at two global brands when she joined Zaiss & Company in 1997. And, while the veteran creative brand strategies leader remarked that she wished she could say there have been “great strides” with women in leadership in the last three decades: “ … statistics state otherwise.” Citing data courtesy of the nonprofit policy institute, The Center for American Progress, Wiseman said it took 20 years – 1980 to 2000 – to go from zero women in top executive ranks of Fortune 100 companies to just 7% today. “Only 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women and women occupy just 10% of top management positions in S&P 1500 companies,” she said. “It’s illogical when you know that women comprise 50.8% of our population and have a higher rate of earning college degrees.” With that being said, Wiseman emphasized that she never approached the notion of leading in her career with her “gender’s strengths in mind.”

The new space is breathing new life into our culture of trust and respect, and the joy we have when we’re together as a team and with our clients. - WENDY WISEMAN, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER, ZAISS & COMPANY
“I’m not a big fan of sweeping generalizations of how a certain gender or other identifier behaves or possesses attributes more suited for one job title or another,” Wiseman said. “It’s passion for what you’re doing, a depth of knowledge and respect for those around you that works. “I gravitate toward those who demonstrate this and with whom we click as a service firm.” In a similar vein, when asked about the firm’s staying power as it approaches yet another milestone, Wiseman noted how the key to its success can be summed up by their clients’ feedback and impressions. “One,” she said, “they are impressed that we know their business as well as they do. And, two, they appreciate how responsive we are in meeting their challenges with ideas and solutions, and with timely implementation.” Its Customer POV (Point of View) has played a role in Zaiss & Company’s sustained growth because it presents the firm’s “unique footing,” according to Wiseman, for their work with clients – its deep dive into their business and position in the market among their prospects. “It keeps us mindful of the core messaging to relay across channels,” she added. “This is what makes the difference.” Similarly, Wiseman said “there really isn’t another firm like ours.” “We’re a hybrid marketing research firm/ advertising agency with strategy at the forefront of all we do,” she explained. “We call it ‘smart marketing’ and all points lead to reaching our clients’ goals — period.” The difference, she expanded, is the depth Zaiss & Company goes to understand the product, service, and/or task at hand, and how to tell the “brand story” in the most compelling manner to spur prospects to action. “We’re the marketing partner clients count on to embrace their goals as our own — offering ideas, leveraging the latest channels and delivering results year after year,” Wiseman said. “That’s why clients stay for the long term. There have been instances where clients have left to ‘try something new.’ Most come back and tell us they just didn’t get the results they did when they were with us. It’s not easy, but it is fun.”
The Next 33 Years
In addition to “fun,” it’s also an exciting time for the company, courtesy of its new location, the genesis of which can be traced back roughly three years. “Available space is more plentiful since COVID hit and all the workfrom-home policies blossomed,” Wiseman said. “So, we ended up with the luxuries of time and selection in our favor.” In fact, after working from home for “several intervals” in 2020 and 2021, Wiseman indicated the collective team’s thought was “it’s simply better to be in a space together to collaborate on our work for our clients.” After all, two of Zaiss & Company’s core values are “better together” and “all in.” “John Lund and the Lund Company brought Blackstone Plaza to our attention, got us into our prime, first-floor location, and together we embraced a vision for the future,” she explained. If there’s one thing women are undeniably known for, it’s their strong work ethic. Over time, business women across the globe have continued to grind, gain influence and make a positive impact in their communities despite any roadblocks that have stood in their way. For many local women leaders, the path to success has involved trials, triumph, and wisdom — which they say is all part of the journey.

Over the years, more and more women have entered what are often referred to as “male-dominated” industries — such as engineering, tech and law, to name a few. Undoubtedly, these women are shifting the dynamic and diversifying these fields. As a woman in the tech industry, Puja Kandel, principal owner of CMIT Solutions, said she got to where she is today by believing in herself first and stepping out of her comfort zone by having a variety of mentors — including men. “I have also embraced challenges by being patient, determined and focused, which has been a critical key to succeed Member FDIC and avoid any obstacles on my way,” Kandel said. “My advice to women aspiring to be in similar roles is to be confident in your decisions and surround yourself with a network of highly successful people and learn from your mistakes. Be realistic and stay positive.

Good things will happen if you make great choices.” Doreen Blakely, owner of Modern Matriarch Distillery, has been inspired by family and guided by faith throughout her journey as a woman in the business of distillery. “I was not raised with a male vs. female mentality,” Blakely said. “When I was very young, my mother told me I could achieve anything I set my mind on. It wasn’t because I was a female, it was because she believed in me. I graduated valedictorian because my mother believed in me. Unfortunately, she died of cancer the prior year. God gives me the talents and I just use them to the best of my ability.” Blakely said everyone faces challenges regardless of sex, and it’s important to approach obstacles as an opportunity to learn and grow. “When one door closes, another opens,” Blakely said. “If you want it bad enough and it is meant to be, it will happen. The greatest lesson I learned is to be patient.” Establishing a career is challenging for everyone, but being a woman can add an extra layer. Karen Goracke, president and CEO of Borsheims, said it can be intimidating to walk into a room and be the only woman present. “I am lucky enough to work in an organization, industry and community that welcomes my perspective, work ethic and curiosity,” Goracke said. “I am

fortunate Warren Buffett has such strong regard for women in the workplace. When you are surrounded by positive people, it empowers you to showcase your best.” Working hard and building relationships with teammates, competitors and clients has helped Steph Guy, principal at Alvine Engineering, navigate working in a male-dominated industry. In fact, she said these bonds have turned out to be just as rewarding as the technical aspect of most engineering projects. “For me, making professional connections started early, and some of those connections led to internships in college and even job offers,” Guy said. “You just never know when those connections will change the entire projection of your career. That’s what happened with me – I met Doug Alvine while in college, but it wasn’t until eight years later that I decided to work with him at Alvine Engineering.” It’s a common saying that “they don’t teach law students how to become a lawyer in law school,” and Amy Lawrenson, partner at Baird Holm, said this statement couldn’t be more true. Instead, she said she owes a great deal to both men and women, attorneys and others who mentored and sponsored her throughout the different stages of her career. Lawrenson has certainly overcome her share of obstacles throughout her timeline — like when she first tried
breaking into the real estate industry in 2007, which turned out to be terrible timing. However, this turn of events caused her to move to the insurance and investment world for several years, which ended up being a great background when she moved back to real estate.
Find a Mentor
Success does not happen overnight. Instead, local women say it’s an experience that involves diligence, hard work, confidence and positivity, among many other important factors. Whether a woman is just starting out or they are established in their career, one fundamental step is seeking out mentors who can advise and support them in their professional endeavors. “It’s important to find people you trust and admire, whether inside or outside of your organization,” Goracke said. “My next best advice is to be inquisitive — immerse yourself in the business or industry you want to be in and learn as much as you can about every aspect of it. Knowledge is power.” It is also true that traditional leadership training, while important to learn industry trends and best practices, cannot alone prepare one to lead people who bring complex experiences and expertise to teams. Women’s Fund of Omaha, said listening and learning from a variety of people and perspectives prove critical to navigating relationships and challenges. More so, it’s a good idea to create one’s own “personal board of directors” who can serve as trusted mentors, connectors, and critical thinkers to guide career preparations. “Network, network, network to expand your circle of opportunity,” Giles advised. In addition to learning from others, it’s vital for women to focus on being their own person, too. It’s equally important to ask questions, follow one’s heart, persevere, let one’s spirit shine, and keep showing up everyday, Blakely said. While it may also sound cliché to some, Blakely said success is often in the eye of the beholder. “Unless you walk in my shoes, you truly don’t understand my journey,” Blakely said. “People see what they
want to see. I am exceptional because I am a child of God. Most don’t want to hear that success comes from the Father, but it is true. We are all unique and have a part to play. My best advice to women is to listen to your spirit, follow your heart and always ask questions.” Angie Ringling, president of Spin Linen, has never looked at her gender as making her an underdog. Rather, she’s put her head down and worked really hard to pave her way. “I’ve felt respected by both genders because I just never made a big deal about it and showed that I was good enough based on my merit,” Ringling said. While not always easy to do, asking for what one needs is necessary to advance toward goals. As a woman, and especially a working mother, Guy said she sometimes has to remind her male counterparts that her needs may be different from theirs — and that’s OK.
“Don’t be intimidated to take a seat at the table,” Guy said. “Share your ideas. Women have great ideas and different perspectives and shouldn’t be afraid to share them. Be firm, but respectful.” Additionally, she said finding a good mentor and confidant, whether it is someone in the industry or not, to share experiences and seek advice when needed is essential. Lawrenson’s advice to women is that they don’t have to trek the most difficult path. Alternatively, it’s important to learn from other women and ask for their help and guidance whenever needed. “You don’t have to take the same path as them to your ultimate goal, but you can still learn from them,” Lawrenson said. “Also, don’t treat the women beside you or behind you as your competition. For true equity and equality of women in the workplace, the advancement of women can’t be treated
as an exclusive club. Pass what you learn around and back.”
Empowering Women
It goes without saying that business leaders must create a culture where women feel valued and have the support and tools they need to succeed. Without offering these tools and support, organizations are disregarding the basic needs of their women employees, and therefore, are at risk of losing talent. Goracke said she’s very fortunate to lead a company that’s dedicated to developing female leaders and promoting from within, but its commitment to female empowerment extends beyond its four walls. To this point, Borsheims has recently announced several partnerships with strong, inspiring women. “We were the first Nebraska brand to endorse a Nebraska university female athlete as part of NIL,” Goracke

said. “More recently, we unveiled a collaboration with Rachel Balkovec, an Omaha native who’s breaking down barriers as the first female manager in affiliated professional baseball. Sales from ‘The Rachel Balkovec Collection’ at Borsheims will benefit Omaha’s Women’s Center for Advancement.” Another critical way that businesses can support women in the workplace is by offering paid leave, as it allows women to stay in the workforce and recognizes women as committed employees and primary caregivers. According to Giles, most parents unfortunately have zero days of paid leave. By offering paid leave, Giles said businesses will benefit from reduced turnover and increased loyalty and productivity, not to mention a competitive advantage in recruiting new talent. “Business leaders also can support affordable, quality child care in their communities, so workers are not forced to take time off the job, scale back to part time, or drop out of the workforce altogether,” Giles said. “Due to Nebraska’s tight economy, many employers have difficulty finding workers. Increasing access to affordable, dependable childcare brings more eligible workers for our businesses.” Ringling said it’s important to develop good leaders in the workplace — regardless of gender. “I’ve seen some great employees come out of both and I love working
with hardworking and determined people who want to better themselves,” she said. It’s also true that a women’s resource group can be a huge asset to recruiting, supporting, and advancing women. Lawrenson currently chairs Baird Holm’s Women’s Initiative, which includes all of its women identifying attorneys. The group provides personal and professional development through programming, mentorship, and networking. The women meet on a regular basis and discuss everything from effective communication styles to business leads. “This group offers an important sense of community and has been a key to engaging and retaining our women attorneys,” Lawrenson said. Every aspect of society is better when women are able to participate authentically, and Ashlei Spivey, co-owner of Best Burger and founder of I Be Black Girl, a community initiative helping Black women connect in Omaha, said women, especially Black women, have been at the helm over every movement — leading change, innovating and creating. Women have transformed the landscape of business for the better and continue to bring positive change to the communities they live and work in. In the end, when it comes to empowering, being empowered, and reaching success, Spivey said the best bet a woman will ever make is on herself: “So, take the risk always and do it — whatever that ‘it’ is.”

LEADERSHIP TRAILBLAZER
WOMEN who ROCK SUSAN HENRICKS
A New Journey
ICAN LEADER SUSAN HENRICKS EMBARKS ON NEXT CHAPTER For the early part of Susan Henrick’s more than 45-year career, she was the only woman in the department, let alone the room. “I was the first female VP at one company and the first female president at another,” Henricks, former president and CEO of the Institute for Career Advancement Needs (ICAN), said. “Now, there are so many women in the business workforce. But, still, there are too few women at the top of organizations, too few women on the boards of organizations.” Henricks, who retired at the end of January after around seven and a half years in her most recent role, noted that only 38 women lead Fortune 500 companies at present. “That is 7.4%,” she said. “I truly believed that by the year 2021 there would be many, many more women in executive leadership positions.”
From Education to IT Before Henricks embarked on a career in IT, the Northwestern graduate (Bachelor of Science, English and Education; Master of Business Administration, The Kellogg School of Management) aspired to teach high
school English – that was, until she student-taught in Chicago. “[I] was determined that this was not the path for me,” she said. “So, I graduated and began my business career in an entry-level IT position at a large insurance company. “I learned how to code, how to be a systems analyst, how to be a project manager, and this early training has aided me greatly in my career.” Henricks – whose notables include the Direct Marketing Association in New York’s Direct Marketer of the Year honoree – recalled how she progressed from being a trainee to being a project manager of major new system development projects. Next up, she would lead multiple project managers, teams and projects. “IT was truly just starting to evolve at this time: COBOL and mainframe computers were the technologies,” she said. “PCs were not even invented yet!” Post-mainframe system projects and immersing oneself in the intricacies of big corp operations, Henricks craved learning how to run a business. “I was very lucky that I had a CEO who was an incredible mentor and

sponsor for me,” she said. “He gave me the opportunity to lead IT, to lead operations, to lead sales and marketing, and to then become the president of this direct marketing services business when he retired.” Several years later, she noted the business (owned by a large global corporation), spun off and Henricks guided it through a successful Initial Public Offering. “I then had the opportunity to lead two very large businesses,” she explained. “First at RR Donnelley in Chicago, where I had the opportunity to travel all across the U.S. and internationally – to many countries in Europe, to numerous cities in China, Thailand and Mexico. “And then the credit card processing business at First Data in Omaha. What amazing experiences these were in terms of leading a business, working with really wonderful and smart people, and developing and creating teams to achieve results.”
Making Her Mark In Henricks’ latest incarnation, she guided the Omaha-headquartered ICAN as president and CEO. “ICAN is a leader development organization focused on helping people become even better authentic leaders,” she said. “And transforming organizations through inspiring, values-based, and skills-building leadership development experiences, programs and events.” ICAN is known for its annual Women’s Leadership Conference – the largest event of its kind in the Midwest. “I have always been passionate about developing my employees, empowering them in their careers, and investing in their potential,” Henricks said, adding that she was an ICAN customer and board member
before joining the team. “This position has allowed me a capstone on my career of focusing on that passion of developing leaders and teams – that has been a gift. It has also been meaningful to me to devote effort to the advancement of women in business through my work at ICAN, something that has been a constant in my career.” Together, she said the ICAN team, faculty and board have expanded the organization’s reach, developed new programs, elevated its services, responded to the evolving business world, served growing numbers of leaders, and made a difference through its work. In partnership with business leaders and organizations throughout the region, Henricks noted ICAN has developed “inspired, authentic leaders who transform the organizations and communities they serve.” “[I’m] anxious to see what new experiences and challenges retirement will bring,” she said. Henricks credits her success to three factors: “I always act with integrity – it is my No. 1 value.” “Second,” she said, “I truly value teams and the people on those teams. And, third, it is these teams that achieve the results in business.” But, the three words she lives by are quite literally emblazoned on a plaque in her office: Be Here Now. “It reminds me that when I am meeting with someone in person, on Zoom or on the phone, that I must focus my attention only on them and really listen and discuss the topics at hand.” In another nod to a thread that weaves through Henrick’s work, she summed up: “Integrity is the most valuable and respected quality of leadership. Always keep your word.”

While the event itself is a tradition now on its 29th installment, programming has never been more prescient – revolving around the theme of “Blaze: Forge Ahead, Rise Stronger.” “Our theme came about as a natural result of the collective journeys that we have all been on the past few years: #MeToo, #TimesUp, Black Lives Matter, digitalization and, of course, the seismic impact of COVID-19 in all aspects of our work and family lives,” said Aileen Warren, who joined ICAN as president and CEO in January. “We all know the world is a different place, particularly the way we work. Leaders must create solutions to help our businesses, customers, and employees through these unusual times.” Furthermore, Warren noted that research shows this “disruption” presents challenges to traditional definitions of what it means to be a leader. “More than ever before, emotional intelligence is at the forefront of effective leadership, which many of ICAN’s customers know is a tenet of our programming,” she explained. “At our Women’s Leadership Conference this year, ICAN wants to shine a spotlight on not just how work has changed, but how leaders can effectively support their teams to become resilient and agile amidst the changes we are experiencing.” Programming includes keynote presentations by futurist and business consultant Seth Mattison, and Eve Rodsky, an experienced mediator who will discuss the need for equitable caregiving responsibilities at home and equitable systems and processes at work to “make allowances for the diverse needs of its team members,” Warren said. Leadership expert, author and entrepreneur Erica Dhawan is also set to teach attendees how to communicate and collaborate with teams in ways that account for both digital and in-person constraints. “We are excited to offer two breakout sessions that highlight the transformative trends in the workplace,” Warren said. The first session will feature local leadership exploring the importance of “upskilling,” particularly in STEM, while she said the second breakout will revolve around gender equality and diversity, equity & inclusion as attributes of workplace cultures. Mattison himself pulled back on the curtain on his exploration of “The Emerging Future is
… Flexible!,” a presentation dedicated to the future of work and top trends for leaders who are successfully navigating the pathway changes, consciously and with empathy. “Simply put, the future of work is a projection of how work, workers and the workplace will evolve in the years ahead,” Mattison explained. “In this regard, there is no one future of work, there are only futures of work as no two organizational paths forward will be the same. As a result, the stakes have never been higher for leaders to claim their own unique version of a more free, equitable, purpose-driven, human-centered, and heart-led world of work.”
Fountains of Knowledge
ICAN is also recognizing individuals who live and lead authentically, such as Carmen Tapio, the recipient of the sixth ICAN Leadership Award, extended to those who embody the “4 C’s” of collaboration, compassion, confidence and creativity. “Two words that make such a difference: ‘I. Can.,” remarked Tapio, CEO of North End Teleservices. “As an organization, ICAN epitomizes and enables everything needed to lead. So women can confidently say, mean and do those two simple words.” Another nod to the conference’s combination of “tradition” and the “leading-edge,” organizers referred to new opportunities to interact, as well as new vendors. “The past two years we have successfully engaged our virtual audience on our conference day and provided our content for 30 days after our event,” Warren explained. “And last year we were able to provide a hybrid experience at the CHI [Health] Center, with a limited exhibit hall. We are excited to expand our exhibit hall experience this year, with our corporate partners and several nonprofit organizations eagerly participating.” With many speakers serving dual roles as authors, Warren said ICAN is pleased to once again welcome The Bookworm as its “bookstore-for-the-day” to sell works, and she said speakers have generously given of their time to participate in book signings in the exhibit hall. Additionally, the hall is getting “livened up” with the stylings of well-loved female jazz standards, courtesy of local artist Camille Metoyer Moten. Registrants can visit ICANConference.com for speaker bios, online exhibitor links, conference agenda, and to view speakers’ welcoming messages.

Leadership for All
AILEEN WARREN CHARTS FUTURE OF ICAN PROGRAMS BY DWAIN HEBDA
AILEEN WARREN SUPPORTED ICAN BEHIND THE SCENES THROUGH BOARD LEADERSHIP AND CONFERENCE PLANNING FOR YEARS. NOW SHE IS LEADING FROM THE FRONT AS PRESIDENT AND CEO.
AILEEN WARREN
PRESIDENT AND CEO, ICAN
MAYOR JEAN STOTHERT CITY OF OMAHA
Aileen Warren has only held the office of ICAN president and CEO for about 90 days, but she’s hardly a novice to the Omaha-based organization. Warren was involved with ICAN for years prior to taking the top job in January and is already leveraging ways the organization can be even more effective at leadership development in the future.
Being Proactive
SHASTA WRAGGE
ICAN BOARD CHAIR
It starts, she says, with greater access and expanded inclusion. “One of the things that’s important when it comes to leadership is being aware of what’s going on around you,” she said. “You cannot operate in a microcosm. “You have to be aware of what’s happening in the world and what’s happening in your community. When ICAN started, it was more focused on leadership development for women, but it’s definitely grown from that. Now everything we do is open to everybody. But we must continually examine how to be more deliberate and more intentional in making sure everyone is having the opportunity to be developed as a leader.” Warren, who served on the ICAN board of directors, board executive committee, Leadership Award selection committee and co-chaired the 2010 ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference, has a clear vision for where ICAN and its programs go from here, from programmatic elements to training delivery. “Leadership has evolved from simply the ability to manage and evaluate the performance of employees who carried out particular tasks, to the ability to lead with resiliency, agility and emotional intelligence,” she said. “Lifelong learning for our workforce is here to stay and delivering training and development to remote and in-person employees requires organizations and leaders to find new ways to deliver systems and processes equitably.”
Everyone Can Lead
Mayor Jean Stothert noted the future of leadership lies in blending foundational elements with new tactics such as intentional one-on-one interaction and formal mentorship. “We all come to positions of leadership in different ways, at different times in our lives,” she said. “When we think of leaders we admire, we might think of people in high-profile positions in business or government or community service. You might also think of a boss or a co-worker as a leader. But the fact is, anyone can lead and create change. Leadership is learned; it’s important that we learn from each other and mentor one another to develop leadership skills.” Shasta Wragge, ICAN board chair and Omaha regional manager and SVP with Bank of the West, added that institutions have a pivotal role to play in the development of employees’ leadership skills. “Without the development of our employees and teams, the future of our business will become stagnant or even obsolete,” she said. “The diversity of thoughts and ideas is what keeps us relevant. We must allow our teams to learn new skills, challenge them to think differently and get them out of their comfort zone. The Women’s Leadership Conference is a great way to complement the work many of our organizations are doing organically and take our employees to the next level.” Warren said the confident way the conference came through the challenges of the pandemic demonstrates the continued importance and relevance of leadership development at all levels in the community. It also provides a lot of confidence and momentum heading into the challenges of the future. “We feel well-positioned to meet the challenges that have come with this workplace disruption, as the core of our leadership development is around the importance of authentic leadership and emotional intelligence,” she said. “We have a saying at ICAN, ‘In order to understand leadership, you must understand people. And in order to understand people, you must understand yourself.’”

Future of Leadership
INDUSTRY EXPERTS TOUCH ON EVOLVING WORKPLACES BY BROOKE STRICKLAND
KANDACE MILLER
PRESIDENT AND CEO, AIM INSTITUTE
JULIE SIGMON
DIRECTOR, OMAHA STEM ECOSYSTEM
Business leaders from all sectors likely never could have predicted the host of changes that have taken place in the last two years. While the pandemic has spurred many adjustments in business operations, there are other trends that are re-shaping and changing workplaces.
Digitization, Automation & STEM
Kandace R. Miller, president and CEO of the AIM Institute, explained that digitization and automation is something that continues to evolve, and it brings up a variety of issues that could be discussed at length. “Digitization is helping to increase equitable access to information that was previously the purview of the privileged few,” Miller said. “It has also opened the door to remote work and virtual learning, which have been vital to keeping some semblance of sanity throughout the past two years. “While automation is helping companies increase productivity and efficiency and creating more high-tech career opportunities along the way, we see some traditional jobs being replaced by more technical positions. Employees are not necessarily running the same processes but instead are overseeing and implementing the automation of those processes.” Julie Sigmon, director for the Omaha STEM Ecosystem, which often partners with AIM on many projects including the STEM Community Platform, explains that more women are seeing opportunities to pursue careers in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. “In terms of leadership, we are seeing more women leading IT teams,” Sigmon said. “More women will have the opportunity to lead and shape the trajectories of companies large and small. There is an incredible opportunity for them to advocate and hold the door open for more underrepresented individuals to enter leadership roles.”
Building DEI
As a leader, it is important to remember that each person on your team is unique. By getting to know them and discovering what makes them tick creates an environment that fosters respect, trust, and empathy. Over time, this creates space for a more inclusive workplace that celebrates diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) rather than squelching it. “DEI impacts all facets of leadership and workforce,” Bianca Harley, vice president of human capital and inclusion at Omaha Performing Arts, said. “Successful organizations integrate it into every aspect of how they do business.
EVE RODSKY
NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF “FAIR PLAY”
BIANCA HARLEY
VICE PRESIDENT OF HUMAN CAPITAL AND INCLUSION, OMAHA PERFORMING ARTS
“It is imperative to treat your DEI initiatives like other business initiatives. Be sure to conduct careful strategic planning, make a financial/resource investment, and understand that your business results are a secondary positive outcome to the basic needs of respect and dignity and well-being of the people who ensure our organizations are sustained and successful. This isn’t a trend, and we want to avoid being performative. This is a muchneeded shift in the way we do business.” Eve Rodsky, New York Times best-selling author of “Fair Play” and the newly released, National Bestseller “Find Your Unicorn Space,” explained that creating this type of environment must come from the top down. “In the past, DEI was happening at the HR level or the informal employee level. Now it has to be at the C-Suite level,” she said. “I believe employers will have to understand that the emotional labor of DEI is deserving of pay and promotion … leaders deserve to be paid and promoted. This invisible work can no longer stay invisible.” Miller noted, “Companies are more attuned than ever to increasing representation of historically excluded populations in leadership roles. You can’t have a very good orchestra if everyone is playing the same instrument. Why should only one type of person dominate the STEM workforce and the C-suite? “Thankfully, companies are increasingly coming to the light on this issue as the country has grappled with social justice movements. That said, there is a long way to go.”
Focus on Communication
Good communication is the foundation of almost every successful business. Without keeping the lines of communication open between leaders and team members, you risk creating an inaccessible divide that could feel impossible to bridge. This is especially true in the case of telecommunicating and video conferencing. While this adds convenience for businesses and employees and opens the talent pool to areas beyond traditional geographic boundaries, placing a strong focus on one-on-one discussions and check-ins are an important part of establishing company loyalty and bolstering longterm job satisfaction for your team. “The Wall Street Journal had a cover story headline recently with the question many are asking ourselves now: how can we make our lives a lot better now? If employers are not asking that question too on behalf of their workers, they are missing the boat,” Rodsky said. “Studies show that check-ins with greater frequency when emotion is low and cognition … leads to employees being more likely to tell their leaders the truth and not just what they want to hear, but what they need to hear to allow their organization to succeed.”

LEADERS NEED TO FIND THEIR “BEST SELF” BY DAVID KUBICEK
LEADERS RARELY FAIL BECAUSE OF FUNCTIONAL OR TECHNICAL INCOMPETENCE. USUALLY THEY FAIL BECAUSE THEY AREN’T AWARE OF THEIR IMPACT, THEIR TONE, OR THEY MISREAD THE INTENTIONS OF OTHERS. ICAN’S AFTERNOON SPEAKERS SHOW LEADERS A PATHWAY TO GET BACK TO THEIR “BEST SELF” AND USE IMPROVISATION, INNOVATION, AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE TO LEAD.
LISA KAPLAN
LIAISON-AT-LARGE, ICAN
KATIE GOODMAN
COMEDIAN, AUTHOR, LIFE COACH
With this year’s BLAZE theme, ICAN organizers reflect on the collective journey we’ve traveled as a society as well as a leader’s personal journey. “Specifically, [we’re focused on] how the defining characteristics of leadership change according to the needs and goals of the individual, the organization and industry, and the world at large, especially in times of activity, crisis, or despair,” said Lisa Kaplan, ICAN’s liaison-at-large. “Research shows that the best leaders, those who forge ahead and rise stronger, are those who can navigate frequent pathway changes consciously and with empathy, with a high degree of emotional intelligence.” Each of ICAN’s speakers were selected to address a different thread of the Blaze theme, to offer a comprehensive understanding of the leadership journey and the new talent landscape. “Our afternoon agenda will take us ‘into the weeds’ of an individual’s leadership journey,” Kaplan said. “Each speaker’s insights will be focused on the impact on women, including the pandemic’s impact on women. “The pandemic did not create new gender inequalities in the workforce, but it did substantially worsen existing inequalities. Our speakers will address the importance of organizations and its leaders to be able to rethink the employee experience, particularly as it relates to women.”
Improvising and Innovating
Comedian, author, and life coach Katie Goodman will speak on improvising and innovating your way through change. “Everyone must innovate and stay relevant as things change more and more quickly these days,” Goodman said. “Innovation can be anything from creating a new product to devising a new way of working together. “We all had to move over to Zoom, work from home, support our kids while we worked in the same space, and learn to lead and connect our employees in ways we hadn’t had to

before. Doing anything in a new way that better serves your mission and goals is innovation.” Attendees will learn how to excavate their authentic selves, cultivate flexibility and gain confidence. “Improv teaches profoundly important skills for leaders and teams in a fun and easy-tolearn way,” Goodman said. “The goal is to practice improvising throughout life so you become flexible and courageous and can handle anything. I will give them a hands-on experience where they see themselves capable of handling the unexpected. They will take home the confidence and skills to put this into practice at work and the rest of their lives as well.”
Emotional Intelligence
Susan MacKenty Brady, first CEO of the Simmons University Institute for Inclusive Leadership, will speak about emotional intelligence, which she said is the ability to identify and manage one’s own emotions, and the emotions of others, and respond correctly. “Emotional intelligence is a moment-to-moment process,” MacKenty Brady said. “There’s no arrival; you can get better. In life, emotional intelligence shows up in relationship to people. “Leadership is a social construct, a relationship. Where we get stuck is in relationships to people. Very rarely do I see leaders derail because of functional or technical incompetence — it’s always [because] they’re not aware of their impact, their tone, and misreading the intentions of others. I want people to walk away with [the knowledge] of how to get themselves back to their center best self where emotional intelligence is possible.” Other afternoon keynotes will be given by resiliency expert Dr. Robyne Hanley Dafoe and Cynthia ‘Cynt’ Marshall, who became CEO of the Dallas Mavericks in 2018 after a 36-year career with AT&T. She is also president and CEO of Marshalling Resources Consulting. “[Hanley Dafoe] will help us set a research-informed and steady course for ‘re-entry readiness’ in this post-COVID-19 world,” Kaplan said. “[Marshall] will share her own leadership journey, and her time-tested rules for the road to successful leadership.”

ONEWORLD’S LUNA STEPS UP DURING PANDEMIC
NANCY LUNA, COVID-19 SERVICES MANAGER, ONEWORLD COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS
One of these days, Nancy Luna might actually get the chance to finish the nursing degree she started, but you never can tell. The Omaha native has been delayed for good reason, pressed into service as the tip of the spear charting OneWorld Community Health Centers’ pandemic operations. “I had been supervising a walk-in clinic at OneWorld,” Luna said. “We would handle minor illnesses and procedures. When COVID hit, we realized we didn’t have enough support, so we started hiring more people, coming up with different processes and plans to accommodate COVID testing when the pandemic hit. “It slowly started falling onto my plate where they were like, ‘Nancy, can you help with this? Nancy, can you do this? Can you come up with a process so we can do testing? Come up with a workflow.’ It slowly started falling in my hands until it became a bigger team and basically a separate thing.” OneWorld formalized her position as manager of COVID services in 2020, a position she embraced with quiet strength and unyielding resolve. “It was really difficult for me to make that decision, just because I was happy where I was,” she said. “I was comfortable with my team and it made me a little nervous to change. But I said, ‘OK, let’s do this. They believe in me. I’m already doing the work so why not take the challenge?’”
Leading the Charge Overnight, Luna went from being an engaged team member to heading up a crew of 30 staff and 20 volunteers. She said she managed to navigate the first few hectic months through a natural sense of priorities and modeling the kind of behavior she wanted to see in others. “I think people realized I’m a hard worker and saw that if my team needs help, I will jump in,” she said. “I was stepping in not only to train people, but also do the job myself. I will make sure things are being done properly, patients are being taken care of and that we’re providing the services they need.”
Luna’s grit and can-do attitude was balanced by an even-tempered leadership style that brought calm to even the most chaotic situations. “I would say the toughest part of the experience was to come up with a plan that we could have in place,” she said. “So many people were coming to us and we didn’t have the capacity, so it was overwhelming. We didn’t have enough resources that we needed in order to accommodate everyone who was coming over. Many of us got really overwhelmed, but we never gave up.” Today, when Luna looks back over what’s been accomplished, she said it gives her goosebumps and little wonder. Under her direction, more than 18,000 community members accessed COVID-19 testing. Under protocols she helped develop, more than 5,000 people who tested positive received the proper care. She also led OneWorld’s efforts to vaccinate more than 16,000 patients.
Ready for More Accomplishments such as these have instilled a renewed sense of confidence in her, even as the battle against variants and other pandemic-related challenges continues. “I am very happy with what I am doing now,” she said. “I am passionate about COVID services. It’s something I do want to continue to do, and I feel like this is going to open even more doors for me, not just COVID in general, but maybe something in infectious diseases or something along those lines.” And as for that nursing degree, Luna has completed medical assistant training from Vatterott College, pre-nursing studies at Metro Community College and is currently in the PRESENTING SPONSOR nursing program at Clarkson College.

Discover your perfect career The “Discovery” platform offered by YouScience paves the way for individuals to consider not only who they are, but also what careers might be their perfect match. The platform is a psychometrically validated set of brain games that measures aptitudes and interests. It offers a robust snapshot of nearly 500 different careers and utilizes data to match ideal careers for everyone. Once an individual completes the Discovery brain games, they not only learn more about themselves and their natural strengths, but also the potential they have to pursue in-demand careers. Positively impact the community The Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce is working locally to help our students and residents establish a rewarding career. This is one of the best ways to show individuals the careers available in our community. It helps retain current residents and turn them into advocates for prosperity in our area. School systems are also starting to use the platform to get students certified skills in career and technical courses to help prepare them for future careers.
BROWNFIELDS PROGRAM As we all know, company culture is important now more than ever. With more job openings than individuals to fill them, talent attraction and retention efforts are key. However, an organization’s culture is what can truly set them apart. At the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce, we know this is the case. That is why we are doing all we can to ensure our company culture is second to none. One tool we use to assist in this endeavor is a software called Motivosity. Motivosity’s mission to help people be happier at work is exactly why we have implemented the platform.
