Core Bank’s search for a more efficient way to lend to small businesses led it to develop the RapidTRAC loan program, which launched in March.

RapidTRAC is a client-centered digital lending system focused on businesses. It’s a simpler, faster way for businesses to borrow and open accounts, according to Chief Administrative Officer Heather Wilderman.

“We think RapidTRAC is a game changer for small businesses in getting a business loan,” she said. “The system utilizes the decisioning underwriting algorithm so on the back end it’s also looking at several data sources to do verifications, which then allows us in most cases to do an instant approval or decline of that business loan.”

When business owners receive an instant approval, they can review the loan details and decide whether to accept the loan. If they accept, it immediately generates a fully digital execution-ready document package and emails it to the applicants for their electronic signature.

“We’re allowing term loans between $10,000 and $100,000 through this product and lines of credit between $10,000 and $50,000, and we’re also offering a competitive rate on rolling out this product,” Wilderman said.

To qualify for this type of loan, firms must have been in business for at least a year, and the owner must have a certain credit score.

Requirements and the procedure for applying are outlined on Core Bank’s designated website at rapidtracloan.com.

More Digital Offerings

“The [COVID-19] pandemic has really shifted the banking industry and moved it to a lot more digital offerings,” President and CEO John Sorrell said. “Our industry is moving this way because it’s how people, especially some of the younger clients, want to do business. We believe that this will be shared beyond the markets we serve, and go throughout the Midwest.”

Locally-owned Core Bank has five locations — its headquarters and three branches in Omaha and a full-service banking unit in Overland Park, Kansas. In 2022 the bank will expand its mortgage company and add a full-service bank — its sixth location — at 114th Street and Highway 370 at the Granite Falls Development in Sarpy County.

Although the pandemic has caused lots of turmoil, the banking industry overall has done well over the past few years, mainly because

of its ability to help businesses with the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

“Banks were responsible for getting the [PPP] money out to people in need,” Sorrell said. “Interest rates have been favorable. We’re very large in the mortgage business for a community bank of our size, so that’s been favorable. Those headwinds can change at any moment, but the industry itself has been very strong.

“One reason we got into RapidTRAC was that a lot of PPP could have been done more electronically with a product like this. That really hastened our thought process on where we’re going to offer products.”

Expanding Beyond Omaha

The outlook for the financial industry over the next 12 months is good.

Banks have built up their liquidity and their capital.

“Rates may go up,” Sorrell said. “The Federal Reserve has been talking about adjusting rates. Inflation is not transitory, we don’t believe it’s here. It’s going to be a challenge for folks in 2022, and we’re keeping our eye on that. I think we’ve positioned ourselves, at least in our bank, to weather some of the choppy waters that could be ahead in 2022 with some of the unknowns still out there, including how far the Omicron [COVID-19 variant] takes us.

“There were lots of things every company went through, not just in our industry — the whole remote work challenge, creating a safe environment and bringing people back to a safe environment. Those

challenges are ongoing, but I think we’ll fare well in 2022.”

Over the next year Core Bank plans to expand outside the Omaha market, as it did in Kansas City.

“A lot of consolidation is still going on in the banking industry,” Sorrell said. “A lot of that is smaller institutions that maybe don’t have succession planning, but they’re looking at the cost of doing business, so there are opportunities to expand through acquisitions. We’re very bullish for 2022, but we’re cautious at the same time.”

“I think what we’re focusing on is customer-centric technology offerings that make it easier for our customers and clients on both the business and consumer side, but this year we’ve really focused on the business side in getting them offerings that make it easier for them,” Wilderman said. “[For customers] to bank how they want, when they want is important,” Sorrell said. “A lot of things are happening, some things through legislation. To be able to have an end-to-end experience in the mortgage business, you would have to have what they define as a notary, which is a big change in that business, with all the e-documents. It’s kind of like tipping the way we do business on its head a little bit but it’s all positive. You have to constantly look at where these things are going and find good partners we can partner with that can make our solutions affordable.”

Simplifying the Process Colin Nabity is CEO and co-founder of Breeze, an insuretech company that aims to simplify how disability and critical illness insurance policies are bought and sold. He noted that after working in the disability insurance industry for a long time, he saw how confusing the application process was, and he wanted to streamline the process.

“There isn’t another online insurance broker out there that has simplified the application process for these products like we have,” he said. “Consumers can come to Breeze and apply for disability or critical illness insurance in just 10 minutes, entirely online. Before us, this was not possible.”

Breeze recently received $10 million in first round funding, the largest of its kind for a Nebraska-based software startup.

Nabity said there is a lot on the horizon for Breeze, and they are already

seeing rapid growth, largely in part because of the abundance of insurance talent in the state.

“We’re going to continue to look to hire the best talent right here in Nebraska because there’s no reason it should be leaving the state for either coast,” he said.

and other resources that serve as your support system will help give you the tools needed to weather whatever ups and downs come your way.

“Make sure you know the business you are interested in starting,” said Allan Hale, SCORE marketing chair.

“Find someone who has a similar business or get a job in a place that will give you a taste of what you’re getting into.

“Nothing is better than experience and observation. You need to love the business since you will be spending a lot of time there. Make sure you build in profit and pay yourself. A business is not a hobby – it’s a way to make a living for you and your family.”

2. Be Flexible Small business owners – experienced or not – need to be ready to roll with the punches. As we have seen in the last two years, we simply cannot know what will take place, but we can expect that the market will shift over time, that crises will happen, and that despite all of that – joy can be found in the midst.

Grit, grace, and adaptability should always be at the core of your business operations. Grit for the hard work that you’ll have to put into your company, grace for yourself as you learn the ropes, and adaptability to change your approach if needed.

She also recommends taking the time to learn from other business owners or entrepreneurs.

“Starting your own business is a life changing endeavor,” she explained. “It takes time, talent, passion, and resources.

Being connected through networking opportunities with other entrepreneurs can assist in preparing you for the adventures and challenges ahead.”

SCORE, an organization that offers one-to-one mentoring, small business workshops, help with business planning and identifying areas of weakness, and access to subject matter experts, has helped businesses of all kinds get off the ground in Nebraska.

In addition, Hale said having someone that you can bounce ideas off of, while helping take those thoughts and put them into action is an important part of the planning process.

“Moving someone from the idea stage to the implementation stage is the first step for any aspiring businessperson,” Hale said. “Many struggle with business plans because the information available is not very user friendly. A good mentor will walk them through the business planning process. We are living in different times coming off the pandemic and dealing with inflationary pressures.

The planning needs to keep those things in mind.”

4. Decipher Finances Understanding the financial component of your business and identifying the customer base that you are trying to reach is also critical.

“All businesses rely on customers that come to your business to solve a problem,” Lang said. “A business owner needs to be crystal clear about their customers, know who they are, and how to reach them. Equally important is understanding the financial structure of your business. A deep knowledge of your business’s financial situation is vital to a successful business.”

Information provided by the Small Business Association Business owners in these industries sought out the most loans in 2021: • $22,000 in construction • $21,000 in other services • $16,300 in health care & social assistance • There were 131,900 SBA loans in America totaling $86.3 billion in 2021 • There were 421 SBA loans in Nebraska totaling $244.9 million in 2021 SBA Resources: • The SBA offers guaranteed loan programs, including the 7(a) 504 and Express Loans, designed to mitigate the risk for banks working with applicants who may not qualify for traditional lending programs.

• The SBA connects people to a large network of resources that provide consulting, mentorship, and technical assistance for free. Low cost or free workshops are also offered.

Nebraska partners include SCORE, Nebraska Business Development Center, the GROW Nebraska Women’s Business Center, and more.

• The SBA offers contracting assistance programs such as 8(a) Business Development Program, Small Disadvantaged Business program, Women-Owned Small Business program, Veteran Owned small business program, and the HUBZone program. All are designed to help small business owners be more competitive in the federal marketplace.

Hale said that having a firm grasp on the financials is one of the best ways you can minimize stress and set yourself up for success.

“Cash flow is one of the most important issues when dealing with the uncertainties of the marketplace,” he said. “This is like having an emergency fund for your personal needs. You need to be prepared with cash or a line of credit to cover those unexpected issues. Make sure you have a reasonable budget to work from. Don’t make decisions based on emotions. Use data to help guide you to a reasonable conclusion.”

5. Keep Going When it comes to taking the leap into small business ownership, one thing is certain: it isn’t for the faint of heart. It takes a lot of work and creativity, and the willingness to dig your feet in when the going gets tough.

Reaching Goals Will Linger, CEO at Fruitful, said as the company has grown, the team has had to learn how to adapt to the various changes that continue to happen in the digital marketing industry.

Future Growth In November 2021, Fruitful Design & Strategy moved into a bigger downtown office, which was the former office of Omaha startup Flywheel. The move has allowed it to host more clients and gatherings.

It is currently completing some minor renovations to optimize the space for the team’s needs. They are also looking forward to continuing to hire and retain local people to work in the new space, and aim to keep talented people in the local area.

“This is an easy way to make a positive impact here in Nebraska,” Lueders said. “Investing in a larger, physical office space also sends a signal to the community that we’re here to stay, and we want to fill our space with amazing local talent.”

Looking ahead, Lueders noted that the company’s focus will continue to be on the design and strategy portion of their service offerings. However, they are working on growing two other areas: product management and expanded digital marketing.

“Our tagline is ‘Grow Something Good,’ and that’s what we’re about in a nutshell: growth,” Linger said. “We’re constantly expanding our offerings to better serve our growing clientele, and constantly growing our team to better serve our community.”

SAM COMFORT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ANGEL GUARDIANS

Sam Comfort always knew that the overriding theme of his professional life would be to serve others. It was the finer details that took a little while to come into focus.

Journey of Service “I originally thought about a career in ministry, and I quickly discovered that wasn’t my path,” he said. “My mom was a special education teacher for 30 years, retiring from Westside Community Schools. She said, ‘You know, Sam? I see you doing this work. You should try this.’

So, I started working as a paraeducator at Westside.”

That role led to other social service entities including stops at Goodwill Industries, Council Bluffs Community School District and Vodec.

Each stop helped him expand his experience skillset, culminating in the executive director’s role at Angel Guardians 18 months ago. Comfort knew immediately he’d landed his dream job.

“Angel Guardians is a unique place,” he said. “We focus on community integration to the greatest extent possible. We believe that everyone, regardless of disability, has the opportunity and should contribute to the Greater Omaha community. Whether it’s through volunteerism, through vocation, through employment, we help support individuals through their preferences to contribute to society.

“The one thing I would want to reinforce is all these events that we’re doing are possible not because of me, but because of the staff we have. We have a phenomenal group of people and I’m so thankful to work with dedicated professionals who invest their time and their passion in supporting the people we aim to serve.”

Immediate Challenges Of course, one of the most immediate challenges for the new executive director was leading through the pandemic in a manner that helped deliver needed services while still keeping everyone safe.

“I’m proud we only had a short-term shutdown,” he said. “We recognized that people with

intellectual and developmental disabilities are already somewhat socially isolated. We made it a priority to say we are a point that can provide community integration and we need to do that to the greatest extent possible.

“It took being creative in the provision of services, doing some online and doing smaller group meetings in locations and really working through that person-centered planning process to say, ‘OK, if transportation is an issue, can we utilize the public bus system? Can we talk about rideshare opportunities?’ It’s really taking a holistic approach to ensure success for the individual.”

Angel Guardians offers clients various programs to develop social skills, enable individual expression and contribute to the good of society. ArtWorks supports individuals desiring a lifestyle or career in art while Community Connections focuses on volunteerism, social/recreational activities and skills development in a community setting.

The Team Works vocational program helps connect clients with employment opportunities. In this area, the pandemic has actually proven to be an accelerator as more companies are scrambling to find sufficient help.

“I often refer to people with disabilities as a hidden labor pool. They’re not potentially active in a job market but everyone has a skill set they can utilize,” he said. “We’re working with one employer right now who has 37 openings and their big thing is, ‘We just need people. Can you get us people?’

I say, ‘Yeah, we can, but not like tomorrow. We’re not a staffing agency. We’re working to support people in their desire for employment.’”

An Omaha native, Comfort studied youth ministries at Midland University in Fremont before graduating with a degree in education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. A former president of the Nebraska Transition College Board, he’s also a member of Leadership Council Bluffs Class 30 and a nationally certified PRESENTING SPONSOR Work Ethic Trainer.

DaShawn McGary is a native of Omaha, Nebraska, and recent graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, conferred with a Finance emphasis. He is a co-founder and director of Divine Living, a home and community services-based agency through Medicaid, that provides assistance to community members with developmental disabilities.

Leah Whitney Chavez is the Executive Director and Founder of World Speaks Omaha, a nonprofit that remove barriers from our community by providing language access services and community education courses. With a bachelor’s degree in Foreign Language and Literature with a concentration in Spanish, she is bilingual and from an early age had an appreciation of Spanish language and Latin culture.

Theodore W. Johnson, MPA, is an Instructor within the Aviation Institute at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) who is pursuing his doctorate in public administration. He is a Pracademic Educator and DEI stalwart engaged in the integral mission of moving the equity needle in public and private sector entities. He has only been in Omaha 18 months and is already creating lasting change to broaden the horizons of racial and gender minorities within the UNO and Omaha communities pertaining to aviation/aerospace and other STEM fields.
