BUILDING A legacy CREATIVE HAIR DESIGN CELEBRATES 40 YEARS

Success can be measured in many ways, but for longtime business owner John Mangiameli, founder of Omaha-based Creative Hair Design, triumph is found in helping employees meet their full potential — while also keeping client needs and community engagement in focus. Now marking 40 years of business, Mangiameli said his work is far from done. Mangiameli has never been a stranger to the cosmetology industry. In a way, he was sort of born into the field as his father was also a talented local hairdresser. It was Mangiameli’s father who taught him the ins and outs of the industry at his salon before encouraging Mangiameli to set out on his own. After gaining experience at other salons, Mangiameli decided it was finally time to open his own studio in 1982. “I thought I had wanted to go to college and study computers but following in my dad’s footsteps felt like the better option for me,” Mangiameli explained. It turned out to be the right decision for Mangiameli, who has steadily grown his salon and spa in both size and offerings over the past four decades. Today, Creative Hair Design occupies 15,000

square feet, substantially surpassing its footprint of 1,200 square feet when first opening.

Trendsetting & Trailblazing

The business opened during an era when spas were still fairly uncommon. In fact, Mangiameli was ahead of the times, as he said spas didn’t begin to really develop until the following decade. For Mangiameli, bringing new services and cutting-edge technology to the area is extremely important, and something he continues to focus on to this day. Located at 12025 Pacific St., the salon and spa offers hair, nail, esthetic, massage and special occasion services. One of the newest services offered at the salon and spa is the hydro facial. Corporate, bridal or other group gatherings can also be accommodated and special packages are offered. The spa, which is all inclusive, features showers and steamers, including a Vichy shower (a large shower with a wet bed and overhead shower bar). Additionally, a hydro tub imported from France is also available for guests.

Over the years, trends have come and gone and even cycled back around, but Mangiameli said some things never change — like a good pair of shears. “In this industry, there’s nothing original, it’s all been done before,” Mangiameli said. “From cuts to colors, to perms to texturizing, it seems like every 20 years something comes back around. “However, I will say I’m still using the same shears, combs, and clippers that we’ve been using all these years. There’s been new developments, but I can say I don’t think I’ll ever see a robot doing hair in my lifetime, thankfully.”

Promoting Health and Beauty

Life can be stressful and busy, but making time for self-care is essential. From facials and dermaplanes to stone massages and exfoliation treatments, the spa offers everything needed for relaxation and rejuvenation, according to Mangiameli. A customized experience is important, as well, Mangiameli said, and services are tailored to meet the needs of each individual client. Additionally, all technicians regularly update their skills with the latest knowledge in the industry and therapists are both nationally

Community Matters

Mangiameli isn’t shy about his love for the Omaha community, and he shows his appreciation through various efforts. For example, Creative Hair Design is involved with a number of organizations including Locks of Love, Chariots of Hope, and Angels Among Us. The business has also participated in fundraising for Children’s Hospital & Medical Center and has taken part in the Aksarben Ball, which brings together Nebraska’s civic minded families for a night of celebration and recognition of the giving community while raising money to further the Aksarben mission. To celebrate its 40th anniversary this year, Creative Hair Design gave back to its supportive community by giving away 40 prize packages valued at $250 each.

Culture is Everything

Long ago, Mangiameli vowed that he would not retire until one of his employees earned $1 million through their 401(k) profit sharing plan. Now, he said he has to revamp his promise to $1.2 million because employees are extremely close to hitting the original milestone and he’s not ready to depart from the business quite yet. “I always say that my job’s not done,” Mangiameli said. “I think the fun thing about being a business owner is being able to hire someone straight out of high school who starts working here as an apprentice or receptionist, and then they go to school, while we provide them with our culture and give them the tools, assistance, mentorship, and guidance they need until they become very successful.

“I love watching my employees reach their goals like being able to afford to purchase their own homes or be financially stable when they do get to that retirement age. The reward for me is being able to see people grow. Now, my senior staff is telling the new girls, ‘You have got to invest in your 401 plan now — don’t wait.’ They see the value now. To have a hairdresser have $1 million in their retirement account before they hit 60 or 70 years old is fantastic.” Of course, there are bumps in the road on any journey and Mangiameli said the pandemic was a hurdle that greatly impacted the salon and spa, which ultimately had to close for three months. “We lost a huge revenue stream,” Mangiameli said. “But, I paid the salaries of all my employees during the pandemic and gave them bonuses on top of their normal salaries so that this wouldn’t financially affect my team, which was very important to me. And I think we came back even stronger from the setback. We continue to help each other and our culture has become even better. I think our mental state did change a bit in the sense that we have really ensured there’s an equal balance of work and personal life. We continue to accommodate our team’s schedules to allow that. I think that was another big plus.” After spending so many years — even decades — building relationships with team members, it’s not easy to imagine saying goodbye. At least not any time soon, Mangiameli said. “I thoroughly enjoy what I do with my employees and their families,” Mangiameli said. “They’ve been part of my life for so long. I’ve always said I have two families: I have a family at home and I have a family here at work. “I still have so many new people who are starting in this career and this business and I have a huge responsibility and I don’t take that lightly. I want to make sure they’re able to achieve their goals, ambitions and dreams. Because that’s what it’s all about.”

strategic in how they allocate their capital.” Vice President and Mortgage Division Manager, Michelle Sawicki, a 18-year veteran of the bank’s mortgage department, said the growth potential in far west Douglas County and Elkhorn is ripe with opportunities for generating deposits, attracting mortgages, and making commercial loans. “They are our customers,” she said. Sajevic, vice president and loan officer, has been with the bank for seven years and transferred from the Kearney to Omaha market in 2017. He works predominantly with commercial customers. “While technology will continue to grow and will be our foundation, we as a community bank need to have a people-presence in the community,” he said. Five Points Bank has grown in the Omaha area over the past 11 years by making a variety of commercial loans ranging from $2,000 to allow a fledgling business to acquire a copying machine to a $16 million package to finance the equipment needs of a manufacturer. As a state-chartered institution, Five Points Bank can make loans up to its legal limit of $20 million. Entrepreneurial ideas are frequently pitched to Sajevic and his three Omaha loan colleagues. “We find it fun to sit down and build relationships,” he said. “Frequently we are able to provide additional insights as to what has worked in the past and we can connect them to community resources. “A trend we’re seeing is that customers appreciate the accessibility we offer to [our] decision makers.” Bank staffers, offering on average 15 to 16 years of experience, make a difference.

Coleman said an important part of the growth has been emphasizing being a “single-source for solutions” sought by customers. A mobile banking app has gained in acceptance. Customers bank personto-person via a screen. Technology enables Five Point Bank clients calling in to be identified by name when the phone is answered. “We’d like to believe we have a solution for each individual,” Coleman said. Kelley said another important differentiating factor is that Five Points Bank doesn’t believe in outsourcing. It retains the servicing rights on the mortgages it sells, a policy, which Kelley told Midlands Business Journal in a 2017 interview, customers continually tell him they appreciate. There’s a flexibility gained from local ownership and simplified decisionmaking, he added.

Community Ties Bank personnel played an important role in the past couple of years by facilitating more than 1,900 Paycheck Protection Program loans worth over $175,000,000. The bank’s consumer and community base has been strengthened by the growth of its Golden Club, which programs educational and social opportunities for those 55 or older via monthly theater trips, attractions at the Orpheum Theater and trips to the state fair. Additional activities range from cruises to paper-shredding opportunities. Coleman said the 2021 Golden Club holiday luncheon was served to 3,400 customers between the bank’s various locations. Five Points Bank was founded by William W. Marshall Jr. and William W. “Bill” Marshall in 1971. Joining Kelley on the executive leadership team is Vice Chairman Kristen Marshall Maser.

EILEEN KORTH MAKES MARK AT ARCHITECTURE FIRM Over the past couple decades, Eileen Korth learned to juggle multiple responsibilities with a deft touch. Not only did she become a mother in the interim, but more recently, she rose to the top of her firm, Jackson-Jackson and Associates. “In 2007 when I received [the 40 Under 40 honor], I was pregnant with my first child,” she said. “So, becoming a mother and learning to balance my professional career with work responsibilities was, and continues to be, challenging from time to time. “You learn you can’t have it all, so you better decide what you want. I have also learned that my priorities move and shift and I need to stay flexible. Sometimes I have to make project deadlines my top priority and other times family activities are my top priority.”

Taking the Helm Korth not only became a mother, but in 2014 she was named president of Jackson-Jackson, and three years later acquired 25% ownership in the firm. This further solidified her commitment to the company’s success and

she has delivered, growing the business considerably across various market segments. “Over the past 14 years, we have grown our architectural services in the K-12 and post-secondary education market sector, and expanded our architectural design work with numerous state agencies,” she said. Korth said this growth has led the firm to several substantial projects. Among them, U.S. Conn Library renovation and Memorial Stadium press box replacement at Wayne State College, Omaha Public Schools Gifford Park Elementary, and Elkhorn Public Schools North Ridge Middle School. For as much as these projects added to the firm’s reputation – Gifford Park and the Wayne State library were both recognized by American School and University for Outstanding Design – Korth said understanding the value of smaller projects are what really forms the foundation of the firm’s book of business. “I have also come to appreciate the importance of smaller projects that may not seem significant to anyone except our clients, but are really rewarding,” she said. “For example, we do a lot of exterior restoration, roof

replacement and ADA upgrades to facilities. “One of our clients is History Nebraska, through which I get to visit wonderful historic sites around the state. I’m proud we are a partner in protecting, preserving and making Nebraska’s history accessible for future generations.”

Passing the Torch Along her professional journey, Korth has had the opportunity to mentor many up-and-comers in the profession. Her advice reflects the well-worn business ethics that have helped her company grow. “Architecture is a service-based industry,” she said. “Listen to what the owner is telling you they want and need, pay attention to the details, always be curious and eager to learn something new every day. Most importantly, good communication is key to the success of every project.” Korth takes the unique perspective that while her firm actively seeks projects, the best and most rewarding jobs actually choose Jackson-Jackson and Associates, not the other way around. “We get the projects we are supposed to get,” she said. “I used to overanalyze each step in the process if we were not selected. I have since learned to find peace and confidence in my faith that we get the projects that we are meant to do. “Now, when our team is not selected for a particular project, I can say without hesitation ‘That wasn’t our project,’ and typically not long after

that, we are awarded a project that is the right fit for our team.”

Unrelenting Passion Success, as they say, is its own reward, but Korth also says that the same things that inspired her to go into the profession in the first place are still alive and well in her, every day. “Things that I really enjoy about being an architect and that motivate me every day are first, I work with a great group of individuals,” she said. “We all work together to support each other and have each other’s backs. “Second, every project is unique, with a unique set of challenges and opportunities to create something that will have a positive impact on the lives of those who use the buildings and spaces we design.” The scope of Korth’s work outside of the office rivals that of what she does for clients. She is currently a board member for the Nebraska Chapter of the Association for Learning Environments (A4LE) and has also served as a juror for the A4LE Pacific Northwest Region Pinnacle Award. In addition, she is past president, former secretary and board member of the Nebraska Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute, as well as sitting on several committees, including for the 2012 North Central Region Conference in Omaha. She also enjoys volunteering for youth programs, specifically 4-H, and is active in her parish, St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Blair.

DAVID ARNOLD BRINGS STARTUP EXPERIENCE TO BUILDERTREND Looking back on his collegiate career, one can immediately recognize why David Arnold was so successful at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, graduating with highest honors. The Sutherland, Nebraska, native always thrived in settings of diverse learning and Wesleyan’s liberal arts curriculum suited him to a tee. “One thing I really enjoyed about Wesleyan was the fact that we were required to take classes in all different areas,” he said. “It forced you to test things and in that process you learn well, I really didn’t like that area, but eventually you find something you love that you never would have considered otherwise. “I think that structure really helped me understand the reason you explore and do new things is to not only learn what you like, but also to learn what you don’t like. Both of those things are valuable when you’re trying to figure out how to put your time to its best use, whether that’s life or your career.” Even before he graduated college, Arnold was putting his broadspectrum mindset to use in a diverse set of professional roles. Between

2006 and 2011 alone, he served as press intern for then-Sen. Ben Nelson, finished law school, clerked in the Nebraska Attorney General’s office, served roles in three different law firms and the University of NebraskaLincoln College of Law before landing as deputy communications director for Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle. Beginning in 2013, he shifted to the startup world with MindMixer, followed by three years at StraightShot. In 2016, he joined Buildertrend, working his way up to his current role as chief strategy officer in 2020.

New Opportunities “I had a mom who told me I could do anything and at some point I believed her,” he said with a shrug. “I am really a person who likes to do new things. And I think that’s why these startups and this investmentbacked world that I’ve been in is such a good fit. There’s never two days that are the same. “As the business changes rapidly, your job changes rapidly, which means you’re doing new things, you’re testing yourself. You’re trying to

feel out where your ceiling is. I think that’s why I’ve fallen in love with high-growth companies.” With each stop, Arnold gained key components of what is now a robust set of skills that he puts into play on a daily basis. “Each role and each change, while it may not have made sense on paper, were evolutionary steps,” he said. “In the mayor’s office, I learned about communication and more specifically how leaders communicate, how they do it well, how they do it poorly. I developed an appreciation for how important speaking the right message to the right person is. “As I switched to early-stage tech, I realized this reformed planner has to be comfortable with the revision process. That’s one of the things that I now really enjoy about this world, is that the revisions are how you make masterpieces. The first drafts don’t really matter as much.”

Strategic Planning Buildertrend, a software product that helps contractors map out the various elements of a project more efficiently, took everything Arnold had learned up to that point and applied it over a much larger organization. “I joined here at 150 people and we now have about 820 across the nation,” he said. “I think what I’ve learned here is scaling requires intentionality and planning. Growth can be a crushing force unless you

plan how to handle that growth intentionally. Those are the highlighted lessons from all those experiences.” The company got an unexpected boost from the pandemic era as builders large and small looked to squeeze every bit of efficiency out of a highly fluid and highly uncertain marketplace as COVID-19 got its hooks into personnel and supply chain. But even before that, the company had been taking steps to ensure its platform was malleable to a number of different business environments, strategic planning spearheaded by Arnold. “I think the most important thing to call out first and foremost is that strategy and strategic planning is a team sport,” he said. “While it’s my job to organize a process to plan, and also to oversee teams that help different leaders execute, no one in isolation can control strategy. If they tell you that they can, then they’re misleading themselves or you or both. “The thing that’s really exciting is, if you look at the health care industry, group purchasing organizations are super-prevalent. It is how procurement happens, especially for smaller hospitals and systems. That’s essentially what we’re trying to pull our industry into. “We get excited because we’re not trying to create a brand-new business model, we’re just trying to apply it to an industry that sorely needs it. It certainly won’t be easy, but we think we’re onto something.”

Symone D. Sanders, the former chief spokeswoman for Vice President Kamala Harris and recently announced host of two national television shows, was honored Feb. 24 by the Omaha Press Club as the 167th Face on the Barroom Floor. An honor she called humbling and unexpected. “It means so much,” she said. “I have always thought the peak for a Nebraskan is getting your face on the barroom floor.” Her mother, Terri Sanders, served as the emcee and the No. 1 roaster. “She knows all the deep, dark secrets,” Sanders said. “She’s the perfect emcee.” Sanders knew as a child that she had something to say. Standing in her family’s north Omaha home, she used a wooden spoon as a microphone to “report” as journalist “Donna Burns.”

Sanders quickly found a real mic – at 16, nearly upstaging President Bill Clinton at a Girls’ Inc. event – and soon a national stage. Sanders is already working for MSNBC, where she will host two shows on the network and the Peacock streaming platform’s “The Choice.” Her activism started in Omaha with the Empowerment Network. Next, she helped then-Mayor Jim Stuttle survive a 2011 recall attempt, followed by work for Chuck Hassebrook’s Nebraska gubernatorial bid. Her campaign work throughout college led her to races in many states. By age 25, she was calming crowds at Bernie Sanders rallies as the youngest national press secretary for a presidential campaign. For the 2020 election cycle, she served as a senior advisor in the Biden campaign. “When you are putting your head down and doing the work, it’s easy to forget that a lot of young people get to do some of the things that I have gotten to do,” she said. Along the way, she served as national chair of the Coalition of Juvenile Justice Emerging Leaders Committee as a member of the Federal ADVISORY Committee on Juvenile Justice. She was a principle of the 360 Group, helping find solutions to political and social problems. She has provided political commentary for CNN and is a resident fellow of both the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School and the University of Southern California’s Center for the Political Future.

Now at 32, Sanders is in a position of offering opportunity to other young people. “I am not the youngest person in the room anymore,” she said. “I need to elevate young people because someone did that for me. I have a lot of people in Nebraska for that.” In 2020, she published what could be considered a handbook for young people on how to make their voices heard; “No, You Shut Up; Speaking Truth to Power and Reclaiming America.”

She is most proud of her time as the vice president’s chief spokeswoman. Sanders said she would remind herself and others, “We’re not just witnessing history. We are actively making it.” “I had the immense opportunity to help craft so many historic moments for the vice president of the United States.”

Like a lot of travelers, Stephen Osberg’s journey to his current role with the Greater Omaha Chamber started at a coffee shop. Having dropped out of the engineering program at University of California, Berkeley, the then-political science major and would-be law student was working at Blue Line Coffee when, cleaning up one evening, he discovered a roadmap to his future. “Someone left an urban planning journal, so I picked it up,” he said. “I ended up reading it cover to cover because I loved it. I didn’t even know it was a career option. I canceled my LSAT registration and signed up for the GRE and got ready to go to urban planning graduate school.” What followed has been a robust professional decade for the Kearny native. After completing graduate school in 2012, Osberg worked for SRS Consulting before joining the City of Omaha’s planning department. There, he worked on long-range planning projects to help envision and manage the city’s growth.

Accelerating Connect Go In 2018, he joined the chamber as director of transportation development, quickly expanding from only regional strategy development to focusing on the city’s core and how transportation and mobility issues help or hamper development. “The transportation strategy we got going is Connect Go,” he said. “The whole idea there is to reexamine our goals, moving beyond, ‘This street is congested, let’s widen it,’ to a model where we try to understand our bigger needs as a region. We wanted to do that through research, but also through public engagement.” Under Osberg’s leadership, Connect Go drew from multiple workshops, focus groups, oneon-one interviews and several thousand responses to a community survey, all of which pointed out various issues and hurdles within affected neighborhoods. “Through that, we landed on four broad goals for the transportation strategy: equitable access to opportunity, economic growth throughout the region, attracting and retaining talent and stewardship, or maintenance, of the transportation system,” he said. “With that as our motto, we went back out and reconfirmed what we had heard from the public and then translated that into

transportation strategies. “We had fewer specific projects and more broad goals and that led us to additional orbit lines for public transit, improved frequency of transit routes, broadening the regional model of transit and expanding the bike and sidewalk network, especially along elementary schools and along transit routes.”

Building Bridges Osberg said another big payoff is how Connect Go formed a common touchpoint for other relevant transportation entities as they did their own strategic planning. “Our role, ultimately, is to be a convener and a catalyst,” he said. “On the catalyst side, you can look at the streetcar and how that project was languishing. We came in and we worked with our partners to develop a more robust funding plan to get the project over the finish line. “We’ve also tried to set up partners to succeed in various kinds of projects, bringing partners together and making sure we are coming at things in a coordinated manner. We worked with a local foundation and Metro Transit to fund the K-12 transit program where students in those grades don’t have to pay to ride the bus anymore. That’s been a great success. “We also helped the City of Omaha win a federal earmark for streetscape enhancements on 24th Street. We are out there really trying to support our partners and design projects and get funding to put them in place.” Osberg, 38, graduated cum laude from University of Nebraska at Omaha with a degree in political science in 2007. He earned his advanced degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities PRESENTING SPONSOR in 2012.

She has been uniquely positioned to witness and guide the organization’s growth and evolution in a decade’s time, and though the woman herself would prefer to skip any fuss, the Sarpy Chamber team is eager to celebrate and commemorate this milestone. For Karen, the 10-year anniversary is a celebration of how far the Sarpy Chamber has come and how it’s positioned to continue that trajectory. It’s something special for a person to have witnessed 10 years of change at an organization. You have a uniquely comprehensive perspective on the Sarpy Chamber, what have you seen in that time that has surprised you? Karen: I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the continual support our work for the business community gets from bigger businesses and corporations. They see the benefit of having a healthy business community for businesses of all sizes so that tells me we’re on the right track for economic development. What has grown or developed as you would have expected? Karen: I’m so pleased to see the membership grow in the way that it has. It’s certainly not a given that if the county grows, the Sarpy Chamber grows. I’ve always maintained that if we’re doing our job right, and doing right by our business community then we can earn that trust and support and grow at a rate that is healthy and manageable. It’s never been about getting as many members as we can, as fast as we can. Growth needs to happen at a pace that allows us to maintain the quality of our service. The entire Sarpy Chamber team puts their whole heart into supporting our membership, so I’m not surprised our numbers have consistently grown. But make no mistake, that trust and growth isn’t something we take for granted. It’s extremely rewarding to work to earn that every day. As the President for many years, you’ve made an unquestionable impact on the organization, but how has working at the Sarpy Chamber impacted you? Karen: It’s helped me see the gaps in resources our small
