What career advice would you give to your younger self? To not be afraid of not knowing everything. There’s nothing wrong with not knowing everything and asking for help. It’s not a sign of weakness, but strength.

What is your management philosophy? To treat everyone with respect and to recognize the value each person brings to their role. It’s important to let people do what they’re good at, don’t force them to do what you want.

What do you find appealing about your job? I get to talk to, and work with, a wide range of people. No conversation or issue is ever the same, so that keeps things fresh.

What do you feel passionate about beyond your work? I am passionate about sports, both playing and coaching. It helps develop people in many ways beyond the obvious physical ways. It teaches teamwork, competition, having a positive attitude, and dedication.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? I like to read a good book, take my dog for a long walk to clear my head, get a good workout in, and meet up with some friends for some good conversation.

FIRST NEBRASKA LOCATION PRESENTS A PIVOTAL GROWTH PERIOD Previously working in corporate finance, Rob Schlueter decided to look for new opportunities and transition to franchise ownership by opening the first Nebraska location for Metal Supermarkets, a supplier of small-quantity metals, trademarked as the “convenience store for metal.”

“I began looking for other opportunities, specifically in franchising,” Schlueter said. “I came across Metal Supermarkets in my search and thought that it perfectly fit the need for a small-quantity metal supplier in Omaha.”

Founded in 1985 by William “Bill” H. Mair in the Greater Toronto Area, Metal Supermarkets has expanded to almost 110 brick-andmortar stores in Canada, the U.S., and U.K. The franchise operation sells and distributes a variety of metal types and ranges, including hot and cold rolled steel, aluminum, copper and brass, and stainless steel in bars, tubes, angles, channel, sheet and plate.

Backed By Experience

“We have no minimum order, we can cut to length [and] sell it full

size,” Schlueter added. “As an Omaha local, the people who walk through our doors are neighbors, friends, other businesses owners … I want to make sure we provide them the level of service I would want from a company like ours.”

Schlueter said the amount of support the corporate team provides franchisees helps ensure each branch can “do our jobs and do it well.”

When asked at greater length about franchisor structure and support, and the relationships among franchisees, Schlueter said there are plenty of people he can call from the corporate team.

“And I’ve never had a question or concern that someone hasn’t been able to answer,” he said. “I’m also on a group text chain with other franchise owners across the Midwest, and they’re all very receptive, answering any questions or thoughts I may have.

“It’s nice to have that safety net and the support network of both the corporate team and franchisees who have been through all of this before.”

Relying on Customer Experience

The Omaha location, near Interstate 80 and Giles Road, boasts access to a reported 8,000 types, shapes and grades of metal, cut to each customer’s specifications. The Metal Supermarkets at 13239 Portal Dr. opened February 7.

Since then, the firm’s breadth of product and abundance of service has resonated, according to Schlueter.

“Our customers have been so enthusiastic and appreciative that we’re here,” he said. “We’re problem-solvers. We provide them with the metal that they need and we do it with customer service as our focus.”

Schlueter furthermore noted that customers comment on the new concept, and go on to spread the word to friends, family members and colleagues.

“The best way for us to grow is through word of mouth,” he added. “So, we’re grateful that people have gone out of their way to help support our business.”

Serving hobbyists, homeowners and professionals alike — from local manufacturers and machinists, to repair folks, tool and die shops, artists, hospitals, hotels, and schools — the debut and

expansion of Metal Supermarkets arguably could not come at a better time.

In an early February release, the company reported 10 franchise locations were in development. To the latter point, the magnitude and widespread nature of pronounced supply challenges throughout the pandemic have almost taken on a life of its own.

“In the current normal, you have to put in more work to find what you’re looking for,” Schlueter said, when asked for his “take” on current supply constraints, and how his team is stepping up.

“I experienced that when setting up my store and having to buy equipment and inventory … we’ll do everything in our power to make sure we’re servicing our customer’s needs and get them the metal supply they may not be able to find elsewhere.”

In the near term, Schlueter said the team is focused on solving specific customer problems as word spreads in the metro region.

“We’re 100% focused on customer service and taking care of the basics,” he said. “Eventually, we want to donate metal to local trade schools and nonprofits in the area.”

And, eventually, Schlueter said if Metal Supermarkets in Omaha continues to function as the “easiest place for customers to buy their metal,” then “business growth will take care of itself.”

“Right now, the bond market is actually down more than the stock market,” she said. “For those who are entering retirement and need income from their portfolios, it’s important that [they] look at what their allocation is to fixed income versus equities and make

sure they still meet their retirement goals and withdrawal strategies.”

There seems to be a lot of momentum in Washington D.C. to help retirement savers, according to Justin Vossen, investment adviser and principal at Lutz Financial. The new Secure Act 2.0 already passed by the House, but not yet the Senate, allows for autoenrollment with escalators each year

up to 10% of pay. Auto-enrollment in 401(k) for employees has dramatically aided overall savings rates of America’s workers.

“Other incentives are now permissible via the Secure Act to aid in getting employees to contribute,” Vossen said. “They also proposed stairstepping the starting age for required minimum distributions over the next

The House legislation aims to increase the amount individuals can save for retirement, and it plans to increase the number of people who have access to a retirement plan through their employer, according to Matthew Munyon, retirement plan administrator at Swartzbaugh-Farber & Associates.

“Part of the plan will allow for employers to give a matching contribution to employees within a retirement plan for those repaying high student loans which may impede their

ability to defer salary through their employer-sponsored retirement plan,” he said. “This will hopefully get more people to start having contributions made on their behalf earlier in their life, and lead to increased account balances, which will hopefully leave them more prepared for retirement.”

In addition, Environmental, Social, and Governance [ESG] investing will continue to increase. Inflows into ESG investing doubled from 2020 to 2021, and total investment in these funds is predicted to reach $30 trillion by 2030, according to Broadridge.

“[ESG funds] have demonstrated a strong staying power and competitive returns,” Munyon said. “The importance of these funds can be demonstrated by this point: 77% of all ESG funds that have been around for 10 years have survived and are still open for investment, compared to 46% of traditional funds.”

Best Strategies for Those Over 60

Investors over 60 should diversify their investments and re-evaluate their strategy periodically.

“Make sure that you have your assets spread across the market sectors that are appropriate based upon your individual risk tolerance,” Munyon said.

“Modify or re-affirm your strategy to suit your situation.”

Everyone’s investing strategies will be a little different depending on what kinds of income sources they’ll have in retirement. For instance, will they have a pension — which are becoming scarce — or will they rely only on Social Security?

Impact of Inflation

Many people are worried about putting cash in their savings accounts to work in the stock market because of the uncertainty. Also, because this is an election year, there’s always some concern about what will happen with

investment strategy based on what they need and not just their age,” Bruno said. “A lot of investors nearing retirement have little to nothing in Roth IRAs because they weren’t funding a Roth IRA for years. The closer you get to retirement, the less time you have to fund something like a Roth IRA or a health savings account (HSA). Those are two containers (part of your bucket strategy) you should be looking at.”

“The best thing for folks to remember at age 60 is that they still may have a long life expectancy even after retirement,” Vossen said. “Investment

policy and how that will affect personal finances.

“If you look back over the history of the stock market, look at the different assets [such as] fixed income, stocks, and oil prices going back to the 1920s, stocks have always had the highest return,” Bruno said.

“If you’re in inflation, historicallyspeaking, the only way to outpace inflation is to be invested in the stock market. But that’s not to say your entire portfolio should be in stocks; you have to have a diversified portfolio.”

One advantage of investing in the stock market amid rising inflation is to preserve your portfolio’s buying power. As inflation rises and the dollar buys less, you’ll need more dollars to purchase goods and services, so trying to achieve a higher return on your portfolio will help.

Another advantage is that inflation may be a wake-up call to diversify your holdings and spread them out among different asset classes to mitigate the risk of concentrated holdings in a particular area that may be sensitive to higher inflation.

One disadvantage of investing in the stock market is that you may be taking on increased risk exposure to achieve the gains you feel are necessary to get the returns you want. Also, your longerterm bonds may lose some of their value as inflation rises lead to interest rate hikes.

If you have a long-term investment strategy in place, it is important to weigh your options carefully.

“It may not be a good idea to let short-term conditions alter your strategy too drastically,” Munyon said. “Stay on the path you have chosen, or re-visit your risk tolerance to determine if it is the correct path. If the potential for large short-term losses is too high of a pain threshold for you, then make some adjustments so you can have some peace of mind. If you can tolerate it, stick to your path.”

Long-term inflation is bad for most investments as real rates of return are reduced by the increase in the inflation rate, and stocks are no exception.

“Rising costs can hurt profits for companies if they cannot maintain their profit margins by increasing prices; however, stocks that produce cash flow regularly are less affected by rising inflation.” Vossen said. “Other stocks, such as growth stocks, that produce less dividend cash flows tend to struggle more.”

“Think about what you’re trying to accomplish with your investments and how far into the future that is,” Bruno said. “If you’re planning to make a purchase or fund a goal within the next year maybe the stock market isn’t the right place for your money. Maybe it’s better being preserved in a Money Market or your bank account for safety purposes.

“If you’re talking about funding goals that are five, 10, or 20 years out, you have to drown out the noise going on right now around inflation. Inflation is real, but 20 years from now this is going to be a blip.”

Pandemic Influences

Munyon believes that many people saved a lot of money over the past two years.

“With so many events, restaurants, [and] cultural centers closed for the pandemic, a lot of people saved money they may have otherwise spent on entertainment or travel,” he said. “I know a lot of people who invested their stimulus checks into Roth IRA’s or other investments. I also believe that we learned the importance of having a short- to intermediate-term savings account due to the COVID lockdowns.

“Everything can change very quickly, and having six months or longer of your expenses saved up in a safe, liquid place is vital.”

The pandemic did two things for Americans, Vossen said. It slowed

the spending rate for a period of time as everyone stayed home, and the government stimulus provided additional cash.

“Savings rates skyrocketed for much of 2020 and part of 2021,” he said. “This is moving in reverse as we emerge from the pandemic and begin some more normalized activities, and Americans are spending more. Perhaps many are reprioritizing things they spend on and save for? Time will tell.”

Right now Americans have more cash than they had pre-pandemic, largely because of the stimulus and Paycheck Protection Program [PPP] loans, Bruno said.

“You see baby boomers who maybe had originally planned to work until they were 68 or 70 years old [retiring] in their early 60s,” she said. “I think that certain jobs such as health care and teaching are more stressful. They’re realizing that they can retire earlier so they are.

“There’s a lot more awareness around investments because we’ve have the most volatile 36 months of stock market ups and downs, and I think it’s caught peoples’ attention more than it has in the past 10 years.”

INVESTMENT STRATEGIES We live in a country where changes in the tax code come often, so having different types of accounts like Roth IRA, Traditional IRA, and taxable accounts provide flexibility for retirement income.

“The future of income tax, capital gains, and qualified dividend taxation is uncertain,” said Justin Vossen, investment advisor and principal at Lutz. “Thus, having flexibility in where you distribute your future retirement income will be very important to minimize taxes as things change.”

A Roth IRA is funded with after-tax money, so you won’t have to pay taxes on money you withdraw.

Many investors need to look at the options available to them for Roth IRAs and Roth 401(k)s and even after-tax contributions inside of 401(k)s.

“Employees should demand from their employer Roth availability inside of their 401(k), which provides for future tax-free growth and tax-free distributions,” Vossen said. “Normal taxable investment accounts are also beneficial as a diversifier to future tax rates.”

With a Health Savings Accounts (HSA), you can get a tax deduction today, and the invested money will grow tax-deferred.

“The moment you use it for medical expenses it’s tax-free,” said Katie Bruno, financial advisor at Morey & Quinn Wealth Partners. “I don’t think enough people are taking advantage of them. [If] you continue to fund it so when you retire you’ll have a substantial amount in the HSA which you can use to pay for several of your retirement expenses, including Medicare premiums.”

A 529 College Savings Plan can be used to save money for a college education. Contributions to a of up to $10,000 are tax deductible in Nebraska, and the earnings aren’t taxed if they are used for education.

“I think people get caught up in not funding an HSA or a college account because they [are concerned] about what happens if they don’t need it,” Bruno said. “The reality is you would have paid taxes if you’d just invested the money without doing it in this kind of vehicle or container.”

If you give to nonprofits, consider making the contribution in a more tax beneficial way through charitable trust or taking the money from your retirement account.

“At age 72 you’re required to take money out of an IRA, which is called a required minimum distribution,” Bruno said. “You could give that money to a charity and avoid taxes on it altogether. Often I see clients who are giving to a charity, but they aren’t doing it in a way that’s best for their tax situation.”

HY-VEE SUBSIDIARY SIMPLIFIES PHARMACY BENEFITS There’s a new player in the pharmacy benefits management market and its origins are perhaps not what you’d think. Vivid Clear Rx launched just over one year ago with the goal of helping companies gain insights into the cost and utilization of prescription benefits.

But it didn’t spring from a drug store chain, big pharma or even the insurance marketplace.

“Vivid Clear Rx is a subsidiary of Hy-Vee,” said Michael Agostino, president. “One of the things we’d talked about pre-COVID was what would be a good fit for Hy-Vee’s strategic approach to expanding into health care services. A natural next step was to develop our own pharmacy benefit manager.”

Agostino, who’s simultaneously Hy-Vee’s senior vice president of pharmacy business development, was asked to develop the startup, with a built-in first client to show proof of concept.

“Being at the time at 89,000 employees and a self-insured company on the health care side, we said let’s start taking care of our own folks and minding our own management of employees under our management model,” he said. “We formed the cultural background of the company, which falls perfectly in line with our parent company, which immediately makes us a market differentiator. It’s

a very straightforward, simplistic approach in the very complicated environment that’s health care.”

Making Sense of Prescriptions Prescription medication has become one of the more confusing elements of any benefits plan, Agostino said, making the market ripe for a company that can make sense of things and ensure plans are optimized from cost to customer service. He said current events such as COVID-19 and employee turnover have only added to the importance of this function.

“Within health care, one of the things that really stands out is companies needing to offer elevated health benefits within their employer base,” he said. “It’s tough right now to hire someone and it’s tough right now to retain somebody. So, offering the best health care benefit possible is key. But, that’s not inexpensive; in fact, it can be very expensive for companies.”

ensure health care dollars are being spent efficiently. It also provides individual employees and dependents – “members” in Vivid Clear Rx-speak – with various resources for navigating the often-choppy pharmacy channels.

“We created a model that is very group-centric all the way down to member-centric,” Agostino said. “What that means is, not every employer group needs the same thing. What we see in the marketplace is a lot of the benefit offerings sold out there that tend to be the same ones, offered again and again.

“But if you take a good, hard look at what the employer group has experienced in the past, and then put your heads together from a financial standpoint or from a clinical standpoint, you should be able to look at what’s ahead for the year to come. To bring that planning and strategic mindset, specific to an employer group, is an immediate differentiator.”

Specialty Pharmacy Agostino said another major benefit applies to new drugs, which are so prohibitively expensive they can skew the cost of prescription benefits nearly out of feasibility.

“We call that market ‘specialty pharmacy’ and right now, it’s 2 to

3% of the U.S. population.” he said. “But today, we have groups where over 50% of the drug spend is coming from that 2 to 3% population. There are some groups carving this out of coverage, which is catastrophic to someone who needs these critical medications.

“Companies have to be very sensitive with this approach and they have to be smart about it. You have to be strategic and you have to have a subject matter expert. There are not a lot of PBM’s out there that have that expertise and we’ve got it. As far as a differentiator goes, that’s a big deal.”

Finally, the company helps clients make sense of the myriad regulations covering prescription medications, varying widely from state to state and only multiplying in the age of at-home drug delivery.

“The sheer understanding, or lack thereof, of [prescriptions] can be a mixed bowl, that has your head spinning,” he said. “I’m a pharmacist, I’ve been in the industry for 30 years, and sometimes even helping my parents I take a step back going, ‘This doesn’t make any sense,’ “That’s the one thing we’re very proud of with our staffing model; if any of our members call us, we leverage our channel partners and our expertise and make sure we guide them through where to get their medication, how much it’s going to cost and what is best at managing a specific condition. We’re just trying to make all that easier; that’s as simple as this model is.”

Communications and Community LINDA LOVGREN’S EXPERTISE FUEL POSITIVE CHANGE When Linda Lovgren launched Lovgren Advertising, Inc. in 1978, there were only two women owned businesses in the field locally. Lovgren has since seen many women successfully own and lead advertising, PR, design and media firms, and has inspired at least one former intern to start her own marketing company.

Far Reach The Emspace + Lovgren strategic counsel and accreditation in public relations-designated professional also represents other “firsts,” including the Greater Omaha Chamber’s first female chairperson.

The real career highlight for Lovgren, though, has been elevating Omaha’s landscape via her communications expertise and considerable experience. She isolated involvement in the group that developed what is now CHI Health Center downtown, work with the Omaha Storm Chasers ownership to keep the AAA baseball team in the metro (and to build a new home stadium), and her role recruiting defense contractors to support the growth of Offutt Air Force Base and Strategic Air Command.

Additionally, Lovgren has played a role in everything from a billiondollar water quality infrastructure program to the Nebraska State Fair’s relocation to Grand Island.

In retrospect, the path was laid well before Lovgren embarked on a career of communicating newsworthy stories.

“From the time I was about 10, I entered writing contests, speaker competitions and in high school joined the debate team, speaking competitions and took roles in plays,” she said.

Unexpected Change At Iowa State University, Lovgren was poised to earn a teaching degree.

She ended up taking a communications course in the English department and the rest is history.

“My undergraduate degree is from Indiana University in what was then telecommunications and encompassed journalism, advertising and public relations,” she said.

Originally, Lovgren aspired to be a news director. Her first job was as a writer, advertising producer and news reporter at a small radio station.

“The job put me in touch with many area ad agencies and I was offered a couple creative writing jobs,” she said. “I accepted one of those.”

Seven years later, the opportunity to start her own company presented itself.

“I jumped at the chance to be my own boss with a 1-and-a-half-year-old at home and five months pregnant,” she said. “It honestly didn’t occur to me that this might not work.”

Clearly, Lovgren was influenced by her parents’ work ethic, and her husband’s support.

“Knowing ‘I’d regret it if I didn’t try’ made the decision easy,” she said.

As Lovgren Advertising’s expertise grew and clients requested additional services, the firm underwent its own rebrand to Lovgren Marketing Group.

“Then, closing in on 40 years in business, it was important to me for the business to sell, if possible, to another woman,” she continued, “to build on the business with new, exciting work and to preserve the careers of our team.”

Fortuitously, Lovgren and Elizebeth Murphy knew each other casually and had engaged in a project that required joint communications.

“As we worked through the situation we began talking about our businesses and goals,” she said. “The match was perfect. Elizebeth, herself well-established, made an offer to buy the company, merge our businesses and the Lovgren staff to the new entity.”

On June 1, 2018, Emspace + Lovgren was born.

Inspiration is Everywhere Lovgren distinguished between knowing one’s craft and learning all aspects of running a business – from legal to insurance needs. She recalled the words of former ad agency exec, Bob Riley: “‘Do what you do well and hire people to do what you don’t know.”

She borrowed some money from her parents, complete with a payment contract (“less red tape than the bank,” she said).

Lovgren further characterized Omaha as an “open door,” allowing her to prove the company’s value.

“And I saw a quote once that said, ‘You’ll always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,’” she said. “That’s how I look at problem-solving and business development.”

The firm’s growth necessitated a Colorado Springs office in the late1990s. Over the next five years, Lovgren said this experience taught her about people management, distance and the importance of trusted relationships.

“As technology’s capability became greater and more sophisticated, two physical locations weren’t necessary,” she explained.

She credits her success to many things; partly, others who gave Lovgren the “shoulders to stand on” while growing up, in business and life. She acknowledges her competitive nature – sports, 4-H or academics – and her parents as “beacons who instilled values, work ethic and life lessons.”

“On our farm there was no gender, everyone pulled together, worked hard and respected each other,” she said.

Lovgren’s husband and children respected that the work invigorated her. Business leaders who served as mentors also made “remarkable opportunities possible.” Lovgren gives a final nod to professional and community passions to create what she calls a “world-class place to live and work.”

Lovgren hopes to hoist others up on her metaphorical shoulders through her experience pursuing professional and volunteer opportunities.

A fixture of the Midlands Business Journal through the decades, Lovgren’s first business story was featured in the fall 1978 issue. MBJ’s late publisher and founder, Bob Hoig, interviewed Lovgren as the business launched.

“It was the beginning of a long business relationship,” she recalled. “I learned a lot from Bob over the years.”

Lovgren further combined passions for fly fishing and volunteerism; a Nebraska volunteer for Casting for Recovery and national board of trustees leadership, the nonprofit holds fly fishing retreats for women with breast cancer.

The mother of two and grandmother of seven looks forward to working on special projects with Emspace + Lovgren and to turning the tables on the percentage of time spent working versus time spent fly fishing, traveling and with family and friends.

Although he’s quick to share the credit with his team of employees, the simple fact is Highway Signing Inc. wouldn’t be where it is without the grit and leadership of its CEO, Matt Fatka. Starting with the firm in his early 20s, Fatka worked his way up the company ladder to owner of the firm in 2007, weathering numerous challenges all along the way.

Today, with a highly diversified roster of services, an experienced and committed team of employees and the promise of millions in forthcoming federal infrastructure spending, the company’s fortunes have never looked more promising.

“When we purchased the company, all they did was mainly traffic control,” Fatka said. “We are still the largest supplier of concrete barrier rail in Nebraska. But we also do temporary traffic signals, striping, rumble strips. Pretty much, if it’s anything in a construction zone, we now supply it.”

The company performs its work throughout a regional footprint that has included work in Kansas, South Dakota, northwest Missouri, Iowa and, with a few projects in Kentucky and Indiana as well. About 90% of the company jobs, however, are in Nebraska and all are managed from Highway Signing’s Council Bluffs headquarters.

Broadening Services Fatka’s decision to diversify the company’s services, which took considerable investment in equipment and training, has made the 50-employee company an anomaly in an industry known for service silos where competitors focus on just one or two specialties. Offering a one-stop suite of solutions, by contrast, is paying off big for Highway Signing.

“Investing in durable striping, like what the state of Nebraska uses, and in a rumble strip trimmer has given us a huge boost providing one big package of services for everybody,” he said. “It’s landing us more jobs and generating more revenue just by diversifying what our company offers.

“We’re putting a lot back into the company and into our people. As a result, we’ve doubled revenue, we’ve doubled personnel and it positions us as the leading company in Nebraska that

provides a full package for everything.”

Young Achiever Fatka was just 23 years old when Highway Signing bought the assets of Omaha-based Hi-Way Barricades and put him in the role of general manager. Within five years, he’d risen to vice president with ownership stock.

Under Fatka’s leadership, Highway Signing has performed and then some. In 2019, the year he became president and majority shareholder, Fatka led the firm to 42% year over year growth.

Despite COVID-19 challenges, he did even better during 2020, the same year he bought up the outstanding ownership shares.

Throughout this journey, Fatka has been known for an engaging leadership style and a seemingly bottomless appetite for learning. These qualities enabled him to form a vision for the future and hire staff to match that vision, a strategy that has withstood changes in the economy and encroachment by competitors.

“The competitive landscape has changed,” he said. “There’s a lot of companies always wanting to move in on your area. We’ve continued to be successful because of the relationships we’ve built and maintained through the years. Relationships are everything in this business, as is your performance on the job. If you can’t perform, talk is cheap.

“The other thing I stress all the time is it’s not me, it’s our team. It’s our guys in the field that show up every day, the guys working 12, 14, 16 hours a day. It’s our team in the office. It’s everyone we have here. They’re all part of the success we’ve had, and I want to make sure all of them get the credit that they deserve for everything that we’ve done.”

Legislative Session Recap IOWA TAX REFORM TOP PRIORITY As we headed into the 2022 Legislative Session, we were focused on tax reform, talent attraction and retention, and placemaking as our top policy priorities. All of these have been addressed this session, but I would be remiss if I did not start by recognizing the historic tax reform the Legislature passed and Governor Reynolds signed into law on March 1. Iowa’s corporate rate will incrementally drop to 5.5 percent. Personal income tax will incrementally decrease in subsequent years until it reaches 3.9 percent in TY2026. Corporate and individual income tax reductions of this magnitude make Iowa one of the most competitive states in the nation. Site selectors and businesses have already taken note.

Dan Dawson, Council Bluffs senator and chair of the senate ways and means committee, is working on a very important piece of legislation that will allow for the funding of the Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund. The fund was approved by Iowa voters in 2010 but has yet to be funded since the sales tax has not been increased in that time. His proposal would fully fund the trust with 3/8-cent in sales tax revenue (around $250 million annually) and provide additional resources for quality of life and recreation projects, which have major impacts on talent attraction and retention.

While it remains unknown if this proposal will pass this session, we appreciate the work Senator Dawson has done on it, and the attention it has drawn to the critical issue of quality of life and place investments.

Placemaking is being addressed in a major way with a $100 million grant program fittingly called, Destination Iowa.

This appropriation of American Rescue Plan Act funds from Governor Reynolds can be used for one of four purposes: - Economically Significant Development - Outdoor Recreation - Tourism Attraction - Creative Placemaking With placemaking being such a major issue throughout Iowa, this funding will directly impact our ability to attract and retain talent, as people want to live in vibrant communities with premier amenities and arts, culture, and entertainment options.

ELECTION LAWS Providing our members timely and pertinent election information is a key role of the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce.

As such, we are doing all we can to educate and prepare our members for the June 7 primary election and November 8 general election. One important piece of doing so is making members aware of the changes to Iowa’s election laws over the past few years, especially pertaining to absentee voting.

Those wishing to attain an absentee ballot for the June 7 primary election can do so as of March 29, with distribution of official ballots to requesting individuals starting May 18.

For the General Election on November 8, the first day to submit an absentee ballot request form is Tuesday, August 30, with ballots starting to be mailed on Wednesday, October 19.

The voter pre-registration deadline for the primary election is Monday, May 23, which is also the last day to have an absentee ballot mailed. For the November 8general election, the voter pre-registration deadline and the last day to request/mail an absentee ballot is Monday, October 24th.

Voters can register at their registered polling place the day of the election but must provide proof of identity and residency for their registered address.

Of course, voters wishing to vote in-person for the

primary or general election may do so from 7am-8pm at their registered polling place. One item to note, however, is that voters will be required to show ID on Election Day prior to receiving and casting their ballot.

As of October 1, 2019, voters will have to provide their driver’s license, non-operator’s ID number, or their four-digit voter PIN when requesting an absentee ballot be mailed to them or when voting absentee at the Pottawattamie County courthouse.

After more than a decade at its previous location, Youth Emergency Services (YES) has moved its administrative offices one block east. The move was effective April 4.

YES’ new address is 2566 Farnam Street, Suite 301, on the third floor above Site-1 Brewing in the Quarters neighborhood. The entrance to the building is at Hank & Ax salon.

The move was made to accommodate staff and case managers in more efficient and secure offices.
