Small Business Week
NEBRASKA’S SUPPORT OF SMALL ENTERPRISES
As National Small Business Week kicks off on April 28, Nebraska is celebrating job creation successes as among prominent indicators of traction and growth. However, finding the right talent remains both a major challenge as well as a major achievement for support organizations and respective entrepreneurs alike.
Factoring growth
The Nebraska District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration isolated the likes of the $140.5 million in SBA Guaranteed Financing to small businesses in the state in 2023, with the 7(a), 504, and microloan programs accounting for 295, 31, and 88 loans valued at $105.2 million, $35.2 million, and $1.5 million, respectively.
The 7(a) loan is lauded for its flexibility, whereas the 504 and microloan programs are for larger-dollar purchases, such as property, and startups or those who need help securing financing, respectively, according to District Director Tim Mittan.
By the office’s calculations, Mittan said this “influx of capital” helped create or retain more than 3,152 jobs last year.
“Job creation generally signifies growth,” he stated.
Mittan also highlighted the $1.9 billion in prime contracting dollars awarded to Nebraska firms with $778 million (small business), $297 million (8a firms), $64 million (women-owned), $170 million (HUBZone) and $300 million (veteran-owned) businesses.
“Any time a business takes on additional funding, especially a contract, it generally means growth,” Mittan stated. “We always like to see the number of businesses in the state increase over the year.”
On average, Mittan said such figures are up from the previous year but remain “below pre-pandemic levels.”
“Many factors contribute to that, including higher interest rates and inflation,” he said.
Anecdotally, Mittan’s team often hears from business owners about their impact through training, events, one-on-one meetings, or resource partners from across the state.
Getting your small business up, running and soaring above your competitors takes a true financial partner. One that understands the challenges you face today and anticipates the ones you’ll encounter tomorrow. One that provides you with the resources you need to beat the competition and exceed your goals. One that is a partner through it all.
Emprise Bank is your partner in possible.
This year, the organization is placing special emphasis on rural businesses by increasing its visibility, specifically with a focus on more in-person training on federal government contract opportunities.
“We are not just about loans,” he said. “We are also about training and getting the right information in their hands to succeed.”
This year during Small Business Week, the SBA is celebrating Scottsbluff-based Bluffs Physical Therapy owner Michael Moravec as Small Business Person of the Year, and Louisville-based Lincoln Structural Solutions as 2024 Subcontractor of the Year for Nebraska and a ninestate region.
percentage find it “somewhat to very easy” to hire new employees).
Additionally, she isolated Brookings research, which noted Black people represent 14.2% of the population but only 2.4% of employer firms in 2020.
Positively, Black women-owned businesses have seen “significant growth,” with 37.2% of all Black-owned businesses owned by black women.

out trusted entrepreneurs who “get it.”
“It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” she said. “It’s also a rollercoaster ride as you aim for that proverbial hockey stick. Your squad will be your survival kit.”
Where legacy, innovation meet
Jerry Ryan Clothing and Sportswear has survived and thrived for 51 years. Now under the leadership of late founder James (“Jerry”) Ryan’s sons, John and Dan, the business is also serving the third and fourth generation of customers. Recent successes are attributed to a larger location at 7824 Dodge St.
“We moved our store two years ago,” Dan Ryan said. “We were having trouble doing the business that we did because we were in a smaller space.”
A familiar refrain, Ryan harkened back to his father’s wisdom: “One of my dad’s favorite sayings was, ‘Don’t miss the sale. If you don’t have the inventory, you might miss the sale. And if you don’t have what someone is looking for, try to sell them something a little different.’”
If that doesn’t work, go to work to get them exactly what they like.
“That was instilled in me and we rarely missed the sale,” he said.
He also attributes successes to relationships with the likes of Creighton University sports programs.
“We sell a lot of Creighton gear when they win,” Ryan said.
They’re not afraid to innovate in other ways; for instance, shifting from renting to selling wedding apparel.
“It has brought in many young men and women who wouldn’t have stepped foot inside of the store before,” he said. “Our median age has dropped. It has gone from a middle-aged, successful guy to a younger guy who is successful and likes clothes.”
Its wide range of lines resonates with a diverse range of clientele; Ryan indicated Rhone appeals to a younger demographic, whereas Hart Schaffner & Marx is a timeless brand carried throughout its history.
Merchandise is one thing; service is quite another.
“When you walk into our store, we have someone who wants to take care of you and who immediately can direct you to the right size,” Ryan said. “It’s a huge difference when people know what they’re doing and they care.”
Personnel may make a huge difference, but Ryan admits it’s hard to find employees at times. Right now, the store remains very much a family affair (with a head tailor of 32 years who is like family, Mounir Elbard). Additionally, he said the cost of insurance remains a challenge for small businesses.
Ryan encourages those just starting out or struggling to get involved with groups like Rotary that can open doors and “get your name out there.”
Flurry of entrepreneurial activity
President and Interior Designer Julie Hockney of JH Interior Design launched not one but three businesses in the past year and undertook a major remodel at the beginning of 2023.
“We opened The Winery & Deli, reimagining an Omaha institution in the same location, and connected it to a new 2,000-square-foot retail space called The Studio by JH, featuring art, home accessories, and furniture, and then connected that to Bouquet, our floral studio,” Hockney
TIM MITTAN, DIRECTOR, SBA NE DISTRICT OFFICE
explained. “The spaces flow into each other, allowing guests to meander and discover each brand.”
Here again, the “secret” to her successes has been people, mainly hiring the right ones.
“In this case, we have three smart and savvy women running each

brand, and they are backed up by great teams,” she said. “We also strive to have the right products to attract people to our spaces.”
Hockney also alluded to big opportunities presented by its presence in Clocktower Village.
“Although we’re across from Westroads Mall, we’re still a bit off the beaten path,” she said. “Once people discover us, they are delighted.”
Retail generally remains challenged to convince consumers that “in-person” is better than ordering online from their couch.
“We’ve partnered with other unique brands for pop-ups, held open houses with refreshments, created whole evenings focused on the
customer experience,” Hockney explained. “We’ve marketed a ton on social media and just try to get the word out.”
As to Hockney’s words of wisdom, it’s all in the people and surrounding oneself with like-minded ones. Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) embodies this notion.
“My entrepreneurial peers help me remain confident and feel on track, “she said. “You can do the same with a mentor or a business coach. Being an entrepreneur is full of highs and lows — it’s a journey. Taking the journey with others on a similar one makes it all the sweeter.”
THE MAKING OF A LONGSTANDING FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS
The late James G. “Jerry” Ryan opened the store that still bears his name in 1973. The legacy continues with the second generation of leadership, sons John and Dan Ryan, and with the third- and fourth-generation of loyal customers.
Fashion wasn’t always the family business. The journey could be characterized as “serendipitous.”
“The greatest story is how my family got into this business,” said Dan Ryan. “My grandfather and his family (one of those kids was my dad) were from Kearney. When they moved to Omaha, he begged Brad Ashford’s grandfather for a job, but it was during the Great Depression.”
Dan’s grandfather said he would work for free and vowed to “run circles around the sales staff.”
“He proved to be a good salesman,” Dan said. “It’s a true success story of proving yourself to someone and capitalizing on that chance.”
Dan’s father would go on to open his store after a reported 20 years in the menswear business. But only after other members of the business community took a chance on him and his dream for what would become Jerry Ryan Clothing and Sportswear.
“I can’t stress how good the community has been to us,” he said. “My dad had to beg [Midwest Bank] to get an SBA loan to start the business.”
Dan himself has established quite a history with the business that is now celebrating 51 years and its second year at a new location.
“I’m 56 and have worked here for 40 years,” Dan said. “My dad had told me as a young boy that you work very hard and there are lots of long hours, but it’s nice to be your own boss. You don’t have to answer to too many people … And I can’t wait to get up in the morning and get to work. I can’t wait for the boxes to come in, and to see what we have to sell to someone. It’s exciting.”

Gluten-Free Goodies
CONSCIOUS COMFORTS SERVES UP TREATS ACROSS OMAHA
Getting creative with vegan recipes in her home kitchen in 2019, Lauren Wright found joy in cooking for family and friends. As someone with an autoimmune disease requiring a gluten-free diet, she was not limited but rather inspired to explore different dishes. Conscious Comforts, a pop-up eatery that serves vegan, and gluten-free treats and comfort foods, opened its kitchen in January 2020.
Wright enlisted her best friend Alexis Jensen to join her on the venture. The two had previously worked in the restaurant business, Wright bartending and Jensen on the managerial side.
“We were already friends but I was always impressed with the way she handled her assistant manager job and I knew I wanted her on my team,” Wright said.
Just a couple of months after getting their start, March of 2020 to be exact, they had to pivot their business model.
“That’s how we got into catering, doing family-style meals and free delivery just to make things work when the events were ending,” Wright said.
She said making that change helped expand the menu. For instance, when a potential customer asked if they could make enchiladas, they got to work.
The duo has not gone through culinary school, rather, pulling from life experiences and experimentation has helped them build up a menu of pastries, pizza, dips, breakfast burritos and “Nunzas,” a vegan play on Nebraska’s popular Runza.
“It’s definitely something I’ve always enjoyed growing up,” Wright said. “I was messing around in my kitchen and I’d love to go down to my grandparents’ house and cook with my grandma. A lot of my memories are definitely built around food and cooking.”
They’re always super excited to be able to enjoy something that they haven’t been able to have for a really long time or have never had at all.
LAUREN WRIGHT, CO-OWNER, CONSCIOUS COMFORTS
A Feel for the Feel-Good
One aspect of the business model came as a surprise to the owners — while Omaha’s vegan eateries are few and far between, they also saw a growing need for gluten-free cuisine.
“I think that’s Lauren’s favorite thing to do in the kitchen, is find something and then ‘veganize’ it and make it gluten-free,” Jensen said. “It’s something that you can’t find anywhere else. Vegan, gluten-free tamales is one of her specialty items.”
Much of those specialties come from nostalgia, either from the co-owners themselves, or customers sharing their gratitude for finding foods they missed eating from childhood.
“There are kids who have been gluten-free their whole life who have never had a Pop Tart and their parents haven’t had them in eight years,” Wright said. “They’re always super excited to be able to enjoy something that they haven’t been able to have for a really long time or have never had at all.”
Either for the nostalgia or for the allure, Pop Tarts and cinnamon rolls remain top-ranking among customers.
They aim to provide dishes that include different dietary needs without excluding anyone or necessitating separate dishes.
“Even if you have no restrictions and you just want to get food for a friend who does, try it yourself because we make food for everybody,” Wright said.
Community and Culinary Comforts
Aside from catering, Conscious Comforts products are currently available at 13 wholesalers in the area.
“You can also order online and just pick up from our kitchen six days a week, we just ask for a 48-hour notice,” Jensen said.
During the summer months, customers can find products at farm stands and the Omaha Farmers Market. Following Conscious Comforts on Instagram and Facebook will give customers the most up-to-date information on when and where they will be popping up. Without a designated storefront, Wright and Jensen encourage patronizing their partners or visiting pop-ups to give their foods a shot.
Measured Success
Both Wright and Jensen have pulled from their experiences in the restaurant industry to make informed decisions about the growth of the business, but at the end of the day, they’re leading the charge, and like many small business owners, are taking each day as it comes.

“In our other careers before, we always had ideas to bounce off maybe a boss or someone who had more experience than us,” Jensen said. “In this company, it’s just us.”
The friends have been strategic in how they expand, not even accruing any debt or seeking out loans.
“We’ve kind of just always gone with the flow, kind of cliche, but we’ve grown as much as we could afford,” Wright said. “Almost having a lack of money sometimes was good for us because it really made us hunker down and make sure that we’re making the best decision financially with purchases.”
Onward
Looking ahead, they plan on strategically growing into different wholesalers and coffee shops around town. Partnering with local grocery stores may also be on the horizon for some of the more popular items.
Most recently Wright began experimenting with housemade Snickers bars, and as you can imagine, the much-needed tastetesting is a necessary challenge in self-control.
“It’s hard,” Wright said with a laugh.

A Q&A with Up and Coming Businesses
DR. XIAO QING XIE CO-FOUNDER, A+ BERRY
Q: What service or product does your business provide?
A: A+ Berry is a Big 10 food tech company based at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln that creates innovative & delicious antioxidant drinks for health. Our first product is AroJuice, a cold-pasteurized and delicious juice made from the super fruit Aronia berry grown in the Midwest that provides the highest antioxidant protection. The problem we are solving is that consumers want to improve their health through functional, innovative, low sugar, and delicious drinks in daily life instead of medicine, however, that need hasn’t been well met. What differentiates our solution is that we selected a revolutionary new super fruit and created an innovative process using a healthy ingredient (dietary fiber) technology to encapsulate antioxidants and high-pressure processing to kill microbes in products at cold temperatures. This patent pending green process greatly improves the taste and function of A+ Berry’s AroJuice. By drinking 8 ounces of AroJuice daily, our customers will get more natural antioxidants and soluble fiber than eating 1,000 blueberries, which is 3 times or more compared to other healthy juices, while reducing 50% or more sugar. Based on our face-to-face interview of over 5,000 consumers and sales data in one year, the key target market of AroJuice is healthconscious women, aged from 30 to 60 years old, in the upper-middle and wealthy class. It has been on the shelves of over 40 grocers in Nebraska, including more than 20 Hy-Vee stores, and sold to customers in over 30 states across the country via our online store.
Q: What made you decide to start the business?
A: Functional food has become the top food trend according to multiple food industrial reports. Consumers are extremely motivated to maintain good health in order to avoid a variety of ailments and even the effects of the coronavirus. For example, they desire more natural drinks that are rich in good nutrients such as antioxidants and dietary fiber, and avoid those high in sugar, alcohol, preservatives, etc. Products of super fruits like elderberry and acai berry that are high in antioxidants had exponential growth during the COVID-19 pandemic as consumers wanted to improve their immunity and overall health. Processors didn’t have strong research and development capability to solve the taste issue of aronia berry and then develop a successful product to meet the needs of consumers. Therefore, our mission with A+ Berry is to improve human health through innovative and delicious antioxidant drinks that utilize cutting-edge food technology and the top-ranked super fruit Aronia Berry, and bring a positive impact to Midwestern agriculture. We developed the business by leveraging the R&D resources and strengths at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the network with American Aronia Berry Association, funding support from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, and business skills at NMotion and Invest Nebraska.
Q: What makes your company unique?
A: As a Big 10-based food tech company, our biggest strength is to create innovative and high quality functional food products with scientifically proven health benefits. We also established a green, sustainable and transparent production practice. We have a deep understanding of foods and food processing, so we can provide consumers with truly healthy products, rather than mainly rely on marketing.
Q: What are your goals for the business?
A: We envision A+ Berry will be a leader in the antioxidant drinks market of USA.
JESSICA QUEEN OWNER, OMEDUS
Q: What service or product does your business provide?
A: Omedus is a medical device company focused on improving the quality of information available to medical professionals. Omedus is currently developing a medical monitoring device called the StatPatch that is designed for mass casualty situations, overcrowded emergency rooms, and monitoring military members during active combat. With automated triage technology and built-in tech to allow coordination across all active patches in the area, we have designed the StatPatch for ease of use and to provide actionable data to help save more lives. We plan to sell to fire stations, police stations, hospitals and the military.
Q: What made you decide to start the business?
A: As a travel nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic, I witnessed our health system struggle and fail to care for large groups of people. Omedus and the StatPatch were conceived as it became clear that a better solution was required. The board of advisors combines expertise from multiple health care professionals and technical specialists.
Q: What makes your company unique?
A: What sets Omedus apart is the depth of experience and knowledge from the founder and advisory board. Combining expertise from multiple medical positions and technical specialists, Omedus is equipped with a deep understanding of patient needs and health care challenges. Our technology is designed for patient comfort and to maximize provider access ensuring that the company’s focus remains centered on improving patient outcomes and experiences.
Q: What are your goals for the business?
A: Omedus will be a place of innovation. Nebraska is currently experiencing a ‘brain drain’ of its talent and having a center of this caliber of innovation and technology would encourage talent to stay in Nebraska. With many excellent centers of education available in Nebraska, it is imperative we provide as many opportunities for high-caliber employment opportunities.
DR. ARTIKA TYNER
FOUNDER, PLANTING PEOPLE GROWING JUSTICE
Q: What service or product does your business provide?
A: Planting People Growing Justice (PPGJ) publishes and promotes books that encourage and empower children to find joy in reading. We are a Black woman-owned children’s book publisher and social enterprise that seeks to increase diversity in books and promote youth leadership development. Our books explore history and culture across the African Diaspora with topics such as arts, geography, and science. Each book also supports the development of core leadership skills in these developmental areas: social-emotional learning, emotional intelligence, project-based learning, and anti-racist education.
Q: What made you decide to start the business?
Q: What makes your company unique?
A: At PPGJ Books, our work is fueled by resilience and innovation. Our mission to promote literacy and diversity remains steadfast as we adapt and expand our offerings to meet the needs of readers nationwide. In response to changing times, we’re broadening our program to include ebooks and audiobooks, ensuring accessibility and convenience for all. This expansion reflects our perseverance — we’re not just adapting, but revolutionizing the publishing industry to address pressing social issues like ending the school-to-prison pipeline. Our creativity shines through our youth author training program, empowering young voices to write their own stories and become reading ambassadors in their communities. By nurturing these budding authors, we’re fostering a love for literacy and amplifying underrepresented voices. Beyond publishing, we’re actively serving our community and combating book deserts through our social enterprise model. By donating 25,000-plus books to children in need, we’re making a tangible impact on the lives of over 6,000 children and families, instilling a love for reading where it’s needed most.
A: I decided to open my business because I am deeply committed to building brighter futures, one book and one child at a time. As a civil rights attorney, I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of illiteracy, particularly within marginalized communities. Many of my clients learned to read while in prison, which is unacceptable. This fueled my determination to address the root cause of this issue. The statistics are alarming: 1 in 4 American children are not reading at grade level by 4th grade, and those who struggle with reading are 4 times more likely to drop out of school and 3.5 times more likely to be arrested in their lifetime. This is unacceptable, and it presents an opportunity for change. Through my business, I am working to create new pathways for the future and to end the cycle of mass incarceration by promoting literacy and access to diverse books.
APRIL ROBBINS PRESIDENT, SKITOPEL
Q: What service or product does your business provide?
A: We make and produce Skitopel. Skitopel (pronounced skee-to-pel) is the combination of the words mosquito and repel. Each product contains real herbs. These herbs are grown and harvested by us. By incorporating the entire herb into each product, we are getting the maximum use out of it. Our goal is for everyone to be able to get outside and enjoy it both bug-free and chemicalfree. Our sprays have been tested and proven to be 100% repellent even at two hours. Even better is the fact that they not only repel mosquitos, but also gnats, buffalo gnats, no-see-ums, biting flies, sweat bees, deer flies, horse flies, chiggers and ticks. Our candles can be used both indoors and outdoors.
Q: What are your goals for the business?
A: Our business goals align with our mission to promote racial justice and create a more inclusive society. We aim to expand our reach and impact through several key objectives:
-Expand distribution: We plan to increase our presence in retail channels, such as Hy-Vee and other major retailers, to make our diverse books and educational programs more accessible to a wider audience.
-Deepen understanding of racial justice: Through our books and educational programs, we aim to empower socially conscious adults and corporate citizens to deepen their understanding of racial justice issues and inspire action towards positive change.
-Foster inclusivity: We strive to create a more inclusive society by promoting diverse voices and perspectives through our publications and initiatives, fostering empathy, understanding, and solidarity among individuals and communities.
-Drive social change: Ultimately, our overarching goal is to drive meaningful social change by leveraging the power of literature and education to dismantle systemic barriers, promote equity, and create a world where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive.
Q: What made you decide to start the business?
A: We started the company after we noticed the only time we encountered bugs, including mosquitos, was when we were away from home. We then did a lot of research to find the best way to do something so everyone else can enjoy the outdoors as we do in a simple but effective way that is also affordable.
Q: What makes your company unique?
A: We are unique in how our products are made and the ingredients in each. We want to make sure we are getting the most out of the herb to ensure the maximum benefit of it.
Q: What are your goals for the business?
A: Our goal is to get everyone outside and for everyone to enjoy it both bug-free and chemical-free. Too many people today are choosing to stay inside to avoid bugs and avoid having to use chemicals. The outdoors has a lot to offer with many health benefits and we just want everyone to enjoy it.
Haney Shoes
MODEL OF LONGEVITY FOR FAMILY BUSINESS
BY TIFFANY BRAZDA PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROGER HUMPHRIESHaney Shoes has seen many reiterations of downtown Benson. Founded in 1942 by Paul Haney, the shoe repair shop turned shoe retailer, is still standing strong with Haney’s three grandchildren at the helm, Doug Sorenson, Mark Sorenson and Carrie Ericson.
The three have been heavily involved with the business since childhood. It was normal to come in after a day of playing outside to help put shoes away at the age of 12.
Haney Shoes has adapted to different styles and tastes over the years, but most recently, the owners have had to deal with supply chain issues and pre-ordering shoes just to ensure they had inventory on the shelves.
Ericson noted that in order to continue growing, they have leaned into where the demand is, especially as a mainstay store for professional footwear.
“The dress shoe business is pretty minimal due to everybody who is working remotely and not dressing up even when they do go into their corporate jobs,” Doug Sorenson said. “Our industrial business has done really well and that has grown.”
Haney partners with employers to come out to worksites to sell safety footwear to workers onsite. Its mobile shoe store offers popular brands such as Keen, Timberland, Thorogood, Ariat and more. The brick and mortar store carries over 27 brands.
Old-School Customer Service
One thing that customers will undoubtedly notice when entering the Haney Shoes storefront at 6060 Maple St. is it almost feels like they are taking a step back in time.
“Everybody who comes through our door is treated like family, we sit them down and measure their feet, which is a rarity anymore,” Ericson said. “We’ll take
care of them and listen to problems they might have. We’re able to help them out with those problems and get them in proper footwear.”
Haney Shoes has two additional locations, one focused on workwear near 108th and L streets and another in Lincoln.
The owners said one thing that has been a pinnacle in the longevity of the business has been their loyal customers who spread the word about their handson service and the company’s values. Another is their loyal employees. Most recently one of their employees retired at the age of 83 after working 23 years at the store. Others worked their way through high school and college.
While small, family-owned shoe stores are few and far between, the thirdgeneration owners aren’t letting the noise of online and big box stores distract them. Sticking to what they know best and maintaining a local presence has kept them motivated.

The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal:
1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address.
Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error.
All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information
2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card.
3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday.
4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts.
5. Invoices must be paid prior to publication.
