Q&A with Timothy Mittan SBA

U.S. Small Business Administration celebrates its National Small Business Week April 30 through May 6 this year. Timothy Mittan, district director of the Nebraska District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration, reflected on his first year as director and looks to the future of small business in the Metro.

You’ve been district director for over a year now, what has been the biggest highlight so far?

It has been a fun and exciting year for me that included a sizable learning curve. I have learned so much about working in the SBA and in the federal government as a whole. The biggest highlight for me has been traveling around the state, meeting our resource partners, lenders and small businesses. I love getting out and visiting small businesses, talking to entrepreneurs and hearing their stories.

What would you say are the biggest values of the SBA?

We are here for the small business owner. We all have experience in the fields we represent such as lending, contracting and business development & training. We pride ourselves on doing what we can do to help small businesses in Nebraska. It is impossible to anticipate all the needs of every business but do our best to get people what they need to succeed.

What challenges are you facing right now and how are you addressing them?

Our district is the State of Nebraska. That means there are over 77,000 square miles we get to cover with a team of six. The challenge is ensuring every small business owner in this state knows we are here for them. Thankfully we have several resource partners across the state that help us carry out our mission. We could not do all that we do without the help of the Nebraska Business Development Centers (NBDC), Apex Accelerators, the Center for Rural Affairs, GROW Nebraska Women’s Business Center, SCORE, Nebraska Enterprise Fund, Community Development Resources, and all our partner banks. We thank them for all they do to help us help small businesses in Nebraska.

What is an SBA program you are especially proud of?

This question is like asking a parent to tell you which child is their favorite! I like and am proud of all our programs. I am especially proud of the work we do with veterans. The SBA has recently taken over the process of certifying veteran and disabled veteran businesses. This certification helps in the lending process and vying for local and federal contracts. Also, in the very near future, we will be sharing more about something new and exciting for Veterans.

What is your best advice for someone looking to start a small business?

When someone gets the next great idea for a business or has the opportunity to take over a business. I encourage them to take a minute… take a deep breath ... then ask for help. There are so many free services available to new entrepreneurs. If being in business is new to the individual, then they need to do some research on the industry and competition. They should also seek out a class or some training with one of our two Women’s Business Centers, NBDC, SCORE or from the SBA directly.

What small business success story has inspired you the most?

Every story I read is inspiring. No two entrepreneurs take the same path in business. It is fascinating to hear how they all get started and what they have done to get to where they are. Our Small Business Person of the Year, Rachel Daily of Innovative Rx in Kearney, Nebraska, started her business right before the pandemic hit. She was able to maintain during that difficult time by shifting her business model to create bulk hand sanitizer.

Then when able, she continued with her mission and started growing.

Who is someone that has made a big impact on your career?

My mom was a businesswoman. She was a vice president in a local bank here in Nebraska and always had that drive to succeed. My two siblings and I got that from her. Mom did not care what we did in our careers. She just wanted us to be the best at what we did and have passion for it. Over the years, I have had many people who have helped, guided and given me opportunities along the way, but my career would not be what it is today without Mom.

What excites you most about the future of your career?

Small businesses are the backbone of our country. I know that the SBA will do everything it can to make sure there is support for them now and in the future. We have been around for almost 70 years. I anticipate we will be around for another 70 and beyond.

What destination do you want to travel to that you’ve never been to?

I still have 10 states in the US that I need to get to. We have a large, beautiful country. I want to see it all. I also want to travel overseas. There is a trip to Italy in the very near future, and I cannot wait. There is so much history to explore there. And the food!! After that, the German Christmas markets are next on the list.

What is something about you that not everyone knows?

I was a music major when I first started college. I received a scholarship in vocal music. Then the realist in me set in and I switched to business. I still sing, but mostly in the shower.

CELEBRATING small business

Small But Mighty

Midlands small businesses at all life stages are making mighty marks on their respective industries and communities. Via U.S. Small Business Administration data, each year 1.5 million jobs are created by 32.5 million small businesses. Small businesses can go on to become fixtures that are immediately recognized in their respective markets and industries – and much farther afield.

Closer to home, take Lawlor’s, the custom sportswear business whose roots can be traced back more than three decades. The family’s retail roots go back much further – to the 1890s when current owner Pat Lawlor’s great-grandfather, Irish immigrant Nicholas Lawlor, set up a bicycle shop in Lincoln.

Lawlor’s Custom Sportswear is one of the oldest family-owned sporting goods businesses in the U.S., established in 1896.

“We quickly and reliably can produce extremely high volumes of custom apparel for any organization that needs customized apparel. We don’t miss deadlines. We stand by our product,” Lawlor said.

Additionally, when asked to define what makes the company tick, Lawlor stated that they are a supplier of fan gear locally – for Creighton University and University of Nebraska at Omaha athletics – selling merchandise in-store, online, and notably at the games.

The more things may change, the more they stay the same; as Lawlor put it, the family has remained in the sports business in some way throughout the company’s 127 years. Lawlor’s sister, Ann, has worked in the business since 1989 handling payables and taxes. Three other family members, niece Jamie Lawlor Carlson, sister-in-law Shari Lawlor, and partner Darcey Christian, serve as embroidery operations manager, work in embroidery, and are tasked as retail general manager, respectively.

“Our greatest strength is our family’s resilience,” he said. “We are not the flashiest. But we do understand satisfying customers is our No. 1 job and have committed ourselves to that for more than a century.”

His goal is for Lawlor’s to get “1% better every day” in all parts of the business.

“So, we can serve our customers better,” Lawlor explained.

Additionally, Lawlor spotlighted diverse investments in another automated T-shirt press, improvements to its website, and upgrades to its headquarters at 84th and J streets.

“A family business is, first and foremost, a family business,” he stated, when asked for “words of wisdom.” “Everyone’s livelihood is dependent on the business generating a profit. Family members need to lead by example and never ask someone to do a job they would not be willing to do themselves.”

Cultivating a Legacy

Medical Maize, LLC/Maize Consulting is a bio-tech startup and business development consulting agency, according to founder and CEO Amy J. Thompson.

“I founded this company to help solve our nation’s health care supply chain challenges, by creating sustainable and more environmentally safe solutions to medical sterilization [and] by leveraging Nebraska-grown agricultural products,” Thompson said.

Since starting late last year, Maize Solutions carved out a strategic partnership.

“Recently, our company’s concept was selected by three chemical engineering students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for their senior capstone project,” she said. “The objective of the project is to design, simulate, optimize and perform a feasibility analysis for Medical Maize’s unique, open-ended chemical engineering process design problem.”

Thompson said this research will help to validate and support the company’s path forward, and has been an opportunity for students to gain experience and apply their knowledge to an emerging company.

Over the next 12 months, Thompson hopes the completion of the feasibility study will further inform plans toward commercialization, accruing local and national partnerships and investors.

She offered advice to entrepreneurs looking to enter the agriculture technology and medical technology industries.

“Give yourself grace. You’re not going to hit a home run the first time at bat, and that’s OK,” Thompson said. “Take the time to listen to the people who have had the success you want, learn from your mistakes, and let go of what doesn’t serve you.”

Shaking Up Senior Care

When asked to describe the heart of Superb, founder and CEO Molly O’Neil referred to its “turning the applecart upside down.”

“Superb came to fruition after I had experienced unsustainable pricing for ancillary nursing staff in the senior care space,” O’Neil stated. “It became my mission to ensure that technology was created to advocate for senior care facilities as well as health care workers.”

Superb, she said, allows health care workers to have the same “gig economy freedom” as an Uber driver.

“We believe in providing options and transparency for all parties involved, all while utilizing technology,” she said. “It is important for us to

be innovative with the technology and still make sure we are prioritizing customer service for the health care workers.”

While a startup, Superb has managed to “hit the 2% club,” with O’Neil referencing a Forbes article that stated “only 2% of female founders will ever break $1 million in revenue.” This milestone occurred within the first

15 months of its product going into the hands of its first customer, which she credits to its partnership with Hillcrest Health Services.

Together, O’Neil said they have significantly reduced agency costs and are “shaking up” an industry ripe for innovation. In all, its month-overmonth growth has averaged 30%.

“We are anxious to bring more clients onto the Superb platform and see how we can customize our technology to fit all senior care facilities,” she said.

Over the next year, Superb is poised to triple its business and is taking on new customers, courtesy of a recently-launched version 2.0 of its product and with a significant increase in hires.

defined by the care and how the team “shows up,” according to co-founder and CEO Nancy Williams.

“NMEP knows that we cannot do all that is asked of us, but we do all that we can in collaboration with our partners,” she stated. “So, that each person we encounter is served equitably and with the intention of helping them articulate and reach their own goals.”

Threads bind those entrepreneurs who have achieved considerable success within NMEP’s operational model. They, too, Williams said, “show up.” They are also not afraid to be vulnerable and open, to take advice, work together, and put in the work.

“These behaviors and actions also attract attention and more support from others,” she said.

When asked about specific “success stories,” Communications and Engagement Manager Amy Zeller pointed to Sarah’s Southern Comfort Foods.

Zeller said founder Sarah Wells-Britt started in 2019 by renting out commercial kitchen space. Since then, Wells-Britt has taken advantage of networking and coaching opportunities through NMEP, growing her business to include catering, pop-up events, and meal pick-up in Lincoln and Omaha.

“No More Empty Pots is my sanctuary,” Wells-Britt said. “I have seen my dreams come to live in that place. I go to the kitchen there to create and to pray. The kitchen and people there have been the place I come to safely operate and prepare food.”

To date, NMEP also represents Wells-Britt’s largest customer, having carved out a unique six-month partnership to prepare hundreds of plantbased meals each week in 2022 as part of its Community Harvest program.

“The partnership with No More Empty Pots gave Sarah a learning

Earnings will reportedly go to purchase a new grill, with plans in the works for a food truck and in the long term, a brick-and-mortar space.

Williams said NMEP plans to activate Seventy Five North’s 17,500-square-foot greenhouse in the Highlander Accelerator by fall 2023 to accommodate the year-round production of fresh produce and botanicals. The facility will feature a commercial kitchen, research lab, classroom space, and a “micro-market.” Its rebranded The Entrepreneur Journey program is also actively seeking entrepreneurs in both food and non-food industries.

Pivoting to Move Forward

Owner of Innovative RX, Pharmacist Rachel Daly was named SBA Nebraska’s Small Business Person of the Year.

“In a small business, you tend to put your head down and just keep putting one foot in front of the other,” she said. “So, receiving a recognition of this sort was very unexpected and humbling.”

Internally, Daly has chalked the compounding pharmacy’s successes up to multiple opportunities to collaborate with new providers and to help new patients.

“Whether it be feeling overwhelmed with which multivitamin is best for them, or struggling with a family member who is no longer able to get a medication they need from the commercial market, we’ve

been able to remain busy helping to find the answers these people are looking for,” she said.

Daly, too, has remained flexible and open to pivoting. For instance, the business was less than six months old when the pandemic hit. Without the medication refills to rely on, Daly began making her own hand sanitizer. With no employees at the time, Daly’s friend temporarily pitched in while she made batch after batch of sanitizer in the lab.

“At every point of growth, there has been another person to help take over some responsibilities that I could no longer do myself,” Daly noted. “Not only have those people helped with the actual workload, but they have also brought along with them some great ideas to incorporate into the business.”

These ideas, she said, ranged from ways to boost provider/patient relationships to new in-lab ideas to help with medication issues.

Continuous Improvement

Appsky co-owners Taylor Korensky, Jade Jensen and Spencer Robinson represented the 2022 SBA Nebraska Small Business Persons of the Year, and Jensen recently spoke to the health of the custom software development company.

“Two of our clients were able to launch their apps to their initial users and start to get traction in the market, which is always a great milestone to be part of,” said COO Jensen, of notable first-quarter successes.

Jensen herself was named a 2022 Midlands Business Journal 40

Under 40 winner, and Appsky rounded the quarter with one of its best performances to date. She attributes these successes to the ability for their talented team members to work together to deliver projects in an “engaging way.”

“We have a great portfolio of clients that have strong visions and passion for their projects and work collaboratively with the team to bring that vision to life,” she added. “Finally, Appsky strives to continuously improve its processes through direct feedback from our employees, clients, and community partners.”

Looking to the future, Appsky is slated to refine and expand its services into areas such as product consulting and discovery offerings.

“Our goal is that this leads to working with more startups in Nebraska through the Department of Economic Development prototype grant that we have specialized in over the past few years,” Jensen said. “The last major development is that Appsky is now able

EMPLOYERS ACTIVATE UNIQUE PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT EMPLOYEES

By the time the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska closed the second round of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding on April 10, 2023, it had received 137 applications requesting almost $22 million in funding, vastly outweighing the $3.3 million in available funds.

While funds are being deployed to help train more behavioral health professionals, employers and organizations are stepping up to meet residents in the present.

Accessible Care

Some may not know that laws have been passed in the last 10-plus years to ensure access to behavioral health, which includes mental health care and substance use disorders.

With the enactment of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, insurers became federally required to offer coverage for mental health and substance use disorders. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction

Equity Act of 2008 requires that insurers provide behavioral health services at the same cost as other physician services.

Ron Rowe, chief revenue officer at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE), said with BCBSNE most employer-sponsored plans include office visits with no copays, something that Leah Vetter, Gallagher area president, said is becoming more popular.

“Over the past year we’ve seen a lot of employers start to decrease the cost of copays, or make the cost of out-of-network providers the same as in-network providers,” she said.

Of note, in Gallagher’s 2022 U.S. Benefits Strategy & Benchmarking Survey, 58% of Nebraska employers reported offering telephonic mental health counseling, either as part of insurance or as a standalone service.

Eighty-six percent offer an employee assistance program (EAP). EAPs typically include a limited number of counseling sessions for free for employees or family members.

Some companies, such as those with large numbers of remote

Page 14 • April 28, 2023

employees spread out over the country, cannot offer some EAP services. To that end, BCBSNE Chief Medical Officer Dr. Josette GordonSimet noted that BCBSNE employees and customers have access to BCBSNE’s nurse case managers.

“Nurse care managers are behavioral health nurses by experience,” she said. “They are also available for members to have confidential discussions around what other support services they may need.”

Peer Support

The challenge, however, comes back to a lack of providers. One initiative gaining momentum is training individuals on how to identify if someone is going through a mental health challenge, and how to address the challenge with kindness and resources.

The National Council for Wellbeing, which has trained and certified 2.9 million individuals in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), administers the internationally recognized training.

In May 2022 the United Way of the Midlands (UWM) received a $25,000 grant from The Molina Healthcare Charitable Foundation to support its Mental Health First Aid initiative.

Matt Wallen, SVP of community impact and analytics, said the need became obvious after conversations with the community.

“As a community organization, we said it’s incumbent on us

to step up and do what we can to help support the community,” he said.

UWM, which works with over 600 corporate partners and 40,000 donors, decided it could have the most impact by bringing awareness to the training Region 6 Behavioral Health was already offering. Internally, Wallen said all UWM staff members have been trained.

“On any given day, anybody can be going through something,” Wallen said. “I would say as an employee, it’s comfortable to know that everybody has training and understands how to help if I’m handling a difficult situation.”

The training is free, and organizations and individuals can sign up online or by calling UWM’s 2-1-1 helpline.

Organizations such as Scoular and BCBSNE have participated in such training, with employees from all levels participating. Other organizations, such as Nebraska Methodist, Best Care EAP, and Children’s Hospital have created their own mental well-being training.

“The beauty of [peer support training] is there’ll be more support on an ongoing basis throughout the entire health system,” said Jean Faber, Best Care EAP corporate director.

Laurie Willburn, Children’s VP of total rewards & people strategies, said that just about 10% of its employees volunteered for training and are easily identified by their badge.

Flexible Options

Monitoring how employees are engaging with various initiatives through surveys and data can help employers determine the gaps.

For example, BCBSNE HR Operations Director Molly Billings said that during COVID-19 the onsite fitness center wasn’t getting much use. Even as things have stabilized the usage remains average due to a hybrid work schedule.

Seeing this BCBSNE promoted two apps to engage with employees and encourage mental health through exercise. Vitality for tracking goals, and Well Beats offers a variety of exercise classes as well as nutrition and mindfulness advice.

BCBSNE also shares how it utilizes these apps with its corporate partners who can then elect to share the apps with their employees.

For Children’s Hospital & Medical Center and Methodist Hospital, it became apparent the medical staff needed a space to decompress after difficult situations. This meant creating relaxation rooms for employees that include items such as aromatherapy and meditation music.

In another effort to further support frontline workers, community leaders Diane Duren and Drew Collier donated funds that allowed

Children’s to bring on a chief morale officer – Howie, a service dog. “In pediatric hospitals, service dogs are not uncommon; we have two service dogs that serve our kiddos,” Willburn said. “Howie is unique in that he is a service dog for our workforce and is solely dedicated to our team.”

Create a Waterfall

When it comes to communicating resources and benefits, employers need to consider what their employees’ schedules are.

For example, Willburn noted that nurses on the patient floor aren’t going to be checking their email, and therefore might not see a wellness newsletter.

With that thinking in mind, Children’s will launch a quarterly magazine in May that will be mailed to employees’ homes. The first issue of Thrive will feature one provider’s mental health journey in line with Mental Health Awareness Month.

“Physicians are not necessarily known for raising their hands and saying, ‘I’m in trouble here. I need some help,’” Willburn said.

“There’s even a misperception that if they say ‘I’m in trouble, and I need some help,’ their medical license may be at jeopardy. There’s just a lot of stigma around it and we’re trying to get rid of that stigma.”

Lori Thomas, director of workplace culture and wellbeing for The Wellbeing Partners, said sharing and incorporating positive messages like this is important to reducing stigma. Another example is Scoular providing employees a mental health day or a lifestyle spending account.

“We hosted some virtual forums and co-workers actually spoke about specific stories about either their or their loved one’s personal struggles,” said Kelli Eickhoff, SVP, chief human resources officer. “It was really impactful, and, actually, people are still talking about it a year later.”

Making sure intentional language and messaging are carried out at all levels of management will help foster a psychologically safe environment for employees.

“A lot of times you’ll see the C Suite or the executive leadership have a plan laid out but for whatever reason that information isn’t being communicated all the way down,” Thomas said. “So, instead of being a waterfall, it’s like a trickle.”

Thomas said a good place to start is by providing training to all managers, whether it be mental health first aid, emotional intelligence, conflict management or something else.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, The Wellbeing Partners is making its Mental Health Toolkit available online for everyone. The kit includes sample policies, graphics, action steps and data and can be found at thewellbeingpartners.com.

Q&A with Anthony J. Gould AUTHOR

Summary:

Omaha author and life coach Anthony J. Gould, recently released his book “Can I Live Again.” It can be purchased at Barnes and Noble, Amazon and tonyjgould.com

Who do you look up to and why?

I have always been inspired by my parents and the strong family values they instilled in me. My children are also a huge source of inspiration, motivating me to be a better dad, brother, and friend. Above all, I am driven by the desire to positively impact the lives of others.

What inspired you to write this book?

I never imagined writing a book about my experiences. To be honest I didn’t want to write this book, I couldn’t imagine sharing my pain let alone trying to deal with it. However, my journey has been a process of understanding and healing, and as I began to hear from others who were struggling with similar challenges, I felt compelled to share my story. Ultimately, I realized that I couldn’t ignore my passion for making a positive impact on others, and that sharing my experiences was one way to do so.

Why do you feel this content is important?

Life is a journey that we all share, and this book reflects that journey. My hope is that readers will come to the realization that their past experiences do not have to define them, and that they can move forward and embrace all that life has to offer.

Who is your ideal audience?

My message is for everyone because everyone experiences pain and challenges in their lives. Whether you’re struggling with a difficult relationship, dealing with loss and grief, or simply trying to navigate the ups and downs of everyday life, my hope is that you will find something in this book that resonates with you. I believe that we all have the capacity to overcome our struggles and find a sense of peace and fulfillment, and my goal is to inspire and empower readers from all walks of life to embrace their own journey of healing and growth.

Why was including space for reflection at the end of each chapter important? For me, this book is about provoking thought, conversation, and self-reflection. I believe that taking time to process our thoughts and feelings is an essential part of the healing process, which is why I wanted to include a space for reflection at the end of each chapter. My hope is that readers will use this space to journal their own thoughts and feelings, and to explore how the themes and ideas in the book relate to their own lives. By engaging in this process, I believe that readers will be better equipped to navigate their own challenges and find a path towards healing and growth.

In the book you talk openly about the abuse, trauma, and addiction you’ve experienced. At any point did you think “maybe I shouldn’t include this?” How did you find the courage to continue?

There were moments during the writing process where I questioned whether I should include certain details of my story. It was difficult to be so vulnerable and open about the abuse and trauma that I had experienced, especially knowing that some of my family members were unaware of what had happened. However, I ultimately decided that my story would not be complete without sharing all aspects of my journey, including the difficult parts. I knew that my healing and continued growth required me to have courage, and that by sharing my story I could help others who may be going through similar challenges. It was a difficult decision, but I am glad that I found the strength to continue and share my story with others.

Did you learn anything new about yourself while writing this book?

Yes, I did. Writing this book was a deeply introspective process, and it helped me to see myself in a new light. I realized that I am stronger than I thought and that there is strength and healing in vulnerability. My hope is that through my writing and teaching, I can help others to find the courage to share their own stories and embrace their own journey of healing and self-discovery.

What is the message you hope readers receive?

They can live past the experiences and your past is not a death sentence.

What advice can you give to someone who knows a friend, co-worker or family member who is going through a particularly hard time. How can they offer support?

First and foremost, listen and not judge. Then give them my book. (Tony chuckled)

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF THANK YOU to our Conference Partners. View full list of conference partners at icanconference.com

Welcome, 2023! I love the New Year. New beginnings, new adventures, new possibilities, new choices. A blank canvas for us to perhaps choose something different and create another masterpiece along the journey of our lives.

As I look back over the past 30-plus years I’ve been in the publishing/media business, I realize where I am today is largely because of the choices I have made. Some of them created more ease and more joy in my life and business, and some of them did not.

We are all a work in progress and constantly evolving. There are hundreds, thousands—make that millions—of choices we can make at any given time.

We all are making choices. Every moment in every day there are choices to make. We are choosing what we wear, what we eat, what we do, who we do it with, where we work, how we nurture our bodies or how we don’t. We choose happiness and joy and we also choose sadness and struggle.

What I love about CHOICE is that you always have a CHOICE. If you choose something and it doesn’t work out or you change your mind, you can choose again. When I hear myself saying, “I have no choice,” that is a choice.

Gary Douglas, founder of Access Consciousness, encourages us to choose in 10-second increments. There is no right or wrong choice, good or bad choice. There is just CHOICE.

Ask yourself, “If I choose (fill in the blank), what will my life be like in a year, five years, ten years? (Or perhaps, in keeping with the above admonition, in the next 10 seconds?) Will this choice create more in my life or less?”

Only you can answer that question. My life continues to change by asking such questions. What are you choosing in 2023? And remember: If it isn’t working out or feeling light—choose again!

What else is possible (in the next 10 seconds, 10 minutes, months, years?) That begins with your next CHOICE!

What else is possible? ~ ANDEE

It’s All Smiles

PRACTICE FOCUSES

ON

COSMETIC DENTISTRY

Dr. Christina Pruitt recently achieved accreditation by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), making her one of only two cosmetic dentists in Nebraska. She was honored by her peers and the AACD at the Annual Scientific Session in Grapevine, Texas, April 26 through 29.

A Growing Practice

Pruitt had been practicing dentistry for 11 years when she opened All Smiles Family Dentistry in Omaha’s Dundee neighborhood in March of 2021. She had three employees then. Today she has five — two receptionists, two assistants and one hygienist.

She is the only dentist in the nearly 1,300-patient practice, but she hopes to add another dentist, at least part-time, and another hygienist over the next few years.

“That would give our patients a little more flexibility when scheduling so they would not have to wait too long for appointments,” Pruitt said.

The practice has room to expand. Over the past year, All Smiles has added two new treatment rooms.

Pruitt started her practice from scratch.

“I had been a dentist for 11 years, so I had a number of people who knew me, who I’d treated in previous practices I’d worked in,” she said. “So that was a small start. Most of what we did was word-of-mouth. I did a lot of marketing campaigns in the Dundee area — mailers and things. We use social media pretty heavily, and we use a company to help us with our online presence and being located through Google.”

Pruitt’s biggest challenge with running a successful practice is the number of hats she must wear. Being an experienced doctor is a big responsibility, but she is also a business owner, an administrator and the HR department.

Insurance in Nebraska is tricky.

“Our state doesn’t receive very good reimbursements for in-network insurance providers, so we have elected not to be in-network with a lot of insurances,” Pruitt said. “We’re an experience-based practice. We don’t have insurance driving decisions. We treat patients based on the research and what we know is best for them. We spend a ton of time with each patient.”

DENTISTRY SMALL BUSINESS
DR. CHRISTINA PRUITT, OWNER OF ALL SMILES FAMILY DENTISTRY.

Specializing in Cosmetic Dentistry

Pruitt does mostly restorative dentistry for all ages. Her focus of training is on cosmetic dentistry. She had been pursuing AACD accreditation for the past five years.

Born and raised in Gordon, a tiny town in Nebraska’s panhandle, Pruitt had originally planned to attend medical school, but her uncle — who was a dentist in Northern Minnesota — encouraged her to try dentistry.

“He said: ‘I really think you’ll like it’ because he knew I was interested in art and liked to work with my hands,” Pruitt said. “I think he knew more about what I was looking for than I probably did.

“So I went and spent a week with him, and I fell in love [with dentistry]. I knew that was what I definitely wanted to do. I got to take care of people the way I would in medicine, but I also got to work with my hands. I always had a passion for art and leaned into that growing up so it’s a beautiful combination, especially in cosmetic dentistry, of sculpting and creating things but also healing.”

After receiving her undergraduate degree in psychology from Creighton University, she attended UNMC College of Dentistry on a United States Air Force Scholarship, graduating with high distinction in 2010. She was then accepted into Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency (AEGD) through the Air Force, where she spent four years in active-duty service caring for service members and veterans. The AEGD allowed her to work alongside all dental specialists and hone her dental skills.

Pruitt spent hundreds of hours at the prestigious Kois Center in Seattle learning advanced evidence-based dental diagnoses and treatments, which encourages primary dental care practitioners to look for and apply available evidence to everyday clinical problems.

She also did lots of continuing education in the cosmetic dentistry realm as well as digital processes.

“We’re really tech-centric here,” Pruitt said. “We don’t do traditional impressions; we do all digital scans. We can design and digitally manufacture the prototype for someone so they can see what their smile would look like before we actually do anything.”

Pruitt met her husband, Chase — an oral surgeon — in dental school. When she finished her service in the Air Force, he was training at the Mayo Clinic, so she moved to Rochester, Minnesota, to join him. She worked in a corporate dental office for two years while he completed his residency. When they returned to Nebraska, Pruitt became an associate doctor for a high-end cosmetic practice where she worked for four and a half years before opening her own business.

Business Ethics Alliance Trustee Spotlight

SUPPORTING THE BUSINESS ETHICS ALLIANCE’S MISSION

On March 27, 2023, I was offered the opportunity to step into the role of the Business Ethics Alliance’s next Executive Director. Without hesitation, I accepted and began diving deeper into the work I started when I joined the Alliance in December 2022. As part of my “onboarding,” I began having as many conversations as possible with our founders, Governing Board members, Trustee Partners, and the greater community to honor the past and envision the Alliance’s future.

For this Trustee Partner Spotlight, I share a look at the personal impact a Trustee Partner had on me as I begin this Executive Director journey.

A. I try to consider all angles of the issue we’re solving, as well as all stakeholders involved, potential consequences, and corresponding probable impact…I find it’s more effective to do this in a team setting or with 1-2 other trusted advisors so I can listen to diverse perspectives; otherwise, the process is likely to be limited by my own echo chamber.

Q. What are some of your most ethical qualities and why?

A. I’m trustworthy, authentic, respectful, and known as a truth-teller. With a high “say-do ratio,” I deliver on promises and lead by example... I’m developing greater patience and learning to listen better, particularly to those who have different perspectives than I do.

Partnership with the Business Ethics Alliance as a Trustee creates opportunities for me to directly support the mission. As a purpose-driven and mission-centric person, I desire to play an active role … advancing the ethical landscape in Omaha and beyond.

I first met Amie Gamboian in a “past life” when both shared independent consulting paths. Fast forward five years to now when both are following different professional paths yet share a connection in the Alliance. When Amie congratulated me, I immediately asked to share some coffee and conversation. What follows is some of that conversation- both in person and virtually.

Q. How would you define ethical behavior?

A. Ethical behavior is fair, just, equitable, honorable, and respectful. It’s doing the morally right thing, especially when it isn’t convenient or self-serving.

Q. What do you consider when moving through the ethical decision-making process?

TRUSTEE SPOTLIGHT CONTINUED

Here’s the part of the conversation with Aime that resonates strongly with me.

Q. Why is it important for senior leaders to reinforce ethical behavior?

A. Senior leaders are responsible for building healthy and ethical cultures… [that] reject toxicity, unethical behavior, and dysfunctions...Few things are more important to the health of an organization than being a leader aligned with who we say we are and how we actually behave.

Q. How does an organization prove it is ethical and worthy of trust to the community it serves?

Q. What are some ethical issues businesses need to keep in mind?

A. Many significant ethical issues consistently hitting headline news have become politicized and weaponized. I’d like to see businesses doubling down on what they can control - their internal ethical culture. Create experiences that align with those [core] values and manage performance to those behaviors. If you’re unwilling to do that, then it’s time to take a fresh look at your core values and make some adjustments.

Q. What does the idea of business ethics represent to you?

A. Upholding business ethics is about holding ourselves and one another as business leaders accountable to high moral standards as we conduct business in fair and equitable ways. It’s about leveraging success achieved

A. Organizations prove they are ethical and worthy of trust by first taking care of their internal customers, the employees… Businesses do much of the same with customers to establish trustproviding clear and accurate expectations,… overcommunicating,… transparently sharing…, …and treating all with respect and dignity.

Q. How do you stabilize your work culture through ethics?

A. Stability is experienced with consistency…choosing to show up and treat one another ethically on a daily basis does far more to advance ethics in our workplaces than most programs or mandatory training

Q. Why do you continue to partner with the Business Ethics Alliance?

A. Partnership with the Business Ethics Alliance as a Trustee

ethically for the good of the entire community by giving back, filling areas of need, and creating impact that goes beyond our own company walls. In communities where ethical standards are collectively upheld and trust anchors business transactions, people, relationships, and businesses all flourish.

creates opportunities for me to directly support the mission of the organization. As a purpose-driven and mission-centric person, I desire to play an active role…advancing the ethical landscape in Omaha and well beyond.

My time with Amie (and many other trustees and Governing Board members) is energizing, informative, and inspiring. Refocusing on our core mission and values as the premier ethics education provider is crucial as is periodically re-examining our mission, vision, and values to ensure relevance for the next part of our journey. Please reach out and drop me a line, call, or an in-person nudge at an event to share your ideas, insights, and suggestions so that we collectively sustain the Business Ethics Alliance for many years to come! Best, AnnMarie

April Showers Bring Financial Literacy?

HELPING FINANCIAL KNOWLEDGE BLOOM AND GROW

Two things recently caught my eye about finances and financial literacy. A recent article in Yahoo Finance recently caught my eye. The headline read “1 in 3 Gen Z and Millennial Adults Are Still Financially Reliant on Their Parents, Study Finds.” For as large a part of the workforce as this population comprises, a lot of workers struggle with finances. The second thing to catch my eye was a proposal written by a student to provide financial literacy education to high school, college, and university students.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/1-3-gen-zmillennial-200020790.html

April also brings urgency to finish filing taxes and checking financial status through this process. Some people better understand what it means to be financially literate and reach financial goals, while others struggle to become financially independent. In Omaha, we are very fortunate to have several programs and resources to teach financial literacy, starting at a young age and moving through any stage of adulthood. Here is a sampling of some of them; there are more than this article has space to mention:

Public K-12 School Systems:

Nebraska has been leading the way in financial literacy for K-12 for a while now. LB452 is a bill passed by the Nebraska Legislature requiring financial literacy standards and instruction in K-12 public school districts. After the bill was passed, several stories were written to show how LB452 was implemented across the state.

https://waynedailynews.com/local-news/nebraskak-12-implementing-financial-literacy-for-studentsrequirement-for-graduating-seniors/

COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS:

Several community organizations also provide financial literacy education, especially for youth. For example, organizations like Junior Achievement of the Midlands and Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands offer financial literacy programs for teens. Financial Beginnings is a national organization that provides financial literacy education to youth through a large network of volunteers, and they have a Nebraska group. LendingLink “provides responsive financial coaching coupled with affordable, alternative loans.”

Higher Education:

Many colleges and universities use Inceptia for financial literacy education. Inceptia started by providing education primarily about student loans, but they have expanded to some other student levels. They are based in Lincoln, but their programs are online.

Although not specifically for college and university students, The UNO Center for Economic Education is based out of the UN-Omaha campus and provides economic education for K-12 students. It is one of five centers overseen by the Nebraska Council of Economic Education, which operates out of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. The UNO center is accredited by the national Council for Economic Education.

Financial Institution Programs:

Several financial institutions offer free financial literacy programs to the community. The Nebraska Bankers Association provides statewide financial literacy education to youth. Centris Federal Credit Union has also provided financial literacy education to the community for several years.

There are many more financial literacy programs to mention than space in this article. What is heartening to the Business Ethics Alliance is to see so that most of the organizations listed above which provide these programs are also Trustee Partners of

Ethical financial practices, and knowledge of them, contribute to financial success for individuals and the community.

Centris’ partnerships with the Financial Hope Collaborative at Creighton University teach single moms and young adults financial literacy skills, while programs like Mad City Money teach youth financial literacy skills. Another financial institution offering financial literacy programs for youth is First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO).

the Alliance. Additionally, other programs (and some individuals from) these organizations listed above provide service to the Alliance through Governing Board membership, attendance at Signature Events, and other forms of support.

Ethical financial practices, and knowledge of them, contribute to financial success for individuals and the community. Ultimately, this translates to financial stability and success for future generations. When you consider the many types of learning that take place over a lifetime, please make sure to include financial literacy as part of that education.

90 YEARS OF SERVICE

SPIN LINEN SEES CONTINUED GROWTH ON THE HORIZON

For nearly a century, Spin Linen, formerly Spic & Span Linen Supply, has been servicing the Omaha metro and surrounding area. Originally founded in 1932 as a dry cleaning and shirt laundry company, Spin Linen has evolved into a full-service linen supply company servicing the health care and hospitality industries. While the industry is sometimes considered a slow-growth sector, Angie Ringling, who purchased the company from her father in 2005, has overseen tremendous growth over the past few years and doesn’t anticipate this trend slowing any time soon.

“It is a complicated business and there are a lot of moving parts to it,” Ringling said. “We have production, delivery, service — there are a lot of balls in the air always, but it is exciting to watch the company grow.”

Now servicing more than 800 customers, the business is looking to expand its geographic footprint. This begins with moving into a larger facility within the next couple of years.

As one of the first females to join EO Nebraska, Ringling said the organization has served her well over the years.

“I’ve gotten a lot out of the forum experience and have taken some really great trips over the years with other members who are really great people,” Ringling said. “I have found some really good travel companions as a result.”

As a business owner, Ringling said EO has been instrumental in helping the company continue to grow, thrive and advance to the next level as a company.

“I don’t know if we’d be where we are without EO,” Ringling said. “It was a great business investment. My advice to newer members is to participate in as many of these networking opportunities as possible because it will make their experience even more fruitful.”

After acquiring the Little King franchise operation in 2021, Lockwood Development is announcing that the firm’s first Omaha Little King store opened to the public on November 1, with a Grand Opening featuring the Creighton Volleyball team scheduled for Saturday, November 5. The store, located at 8602 West Dodge Road, represents a step forward for both the brand and its footprint in the Omaha area. “Our new store is very close to where the very first Little King store was located when it opened in 1969,” said Chip James, president and CEO of Lockwood Development. “That’s no coincidence. We’re truly inspired by the roots of this historic franchise, and we look forward to carrying that spirit forward to loyal Little King customers, as well as a new generation of Omaha residents.” The 1500-square-foot store combines modern design and an inviting dining area with classic Little King branding and artwork. Customers can expect to order from Little King’s beloved menu featuring subs and sandwiches made with bread baked in store and fresh-sliced meat, as well as soups and desserts, while taking advantage of a variety of conveniences, including a drive-thru. Day to day operations at the 86th and Dodge location, as well as the operation of Lockwood Development’s subsequent stores, will be overseen by Mark Edwards, an Omaha native who grew up in the fast-food business. “It’s an honor to merge the industry I’m passionate about with a brand that means a great deal to me and so many families in Omaha,” said Edwards. “Little King has more than 50 years of rich history in our area, and now we get the opportunity to move it forward, modernize it, and highlight the very best of what it has to offer.” The new store is the first in a series of new locations James, Edwards, and the team at Lockwood Development plan to open in Omaha and Lincoln. About Little King Founded in Omaha in 1969 by Sid Wertheim, Little King Deli & Subs is known for its deli-style sub sandwiches, made with bread baked fresh on site and meat sliced to order. In 2001, Wertheim’s son Bob took over the company before its sale to Lockwood Development in 2021. Today, there are six independently operated Little King stores serving Omaha, Nebraska, including the new location at 8602 West Dodge Road, which is the first owned by Lockwood Development.
