A study from Expedia predicts that travelers won’t be setting their sights on international locations, but rather 59% say they will travel domestically.

Deb Ward, executive director of Visit Omaha, highlighted a study done by STR, a company specializing in analyzing hotel data.

“STR … predicts Douglas County hotel revenue will total $245 million, exceeding 2019 revenues by $26 million,” she said.

That prediction has already been realized by Council Bluffs and Sarpy County.

in Sarpy County.

“In 2021 we closed out our second-best year,” he said. “We just had our best March ever — 48% over March 2021.”

Council Bluffs Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Mark Eckman said he’s seen incredible gains in the first half of its fiscal year — which runs from June 30 to July 1 — with an 87.6% increase in hotel/motel tax collections.

“That demonstrates a strong recovery in the travel business,” he said.

With the numbers indicating a busy summer, businesses may not yet be ready to accommodate the influx.

everywhere,” Eckman said.

Staffing shortages could mean that restaurants and hotels adjust their services to make ends meet.

For hotels this may mean reduced housekeeping, shorter check-in periods, or condensed breakfast options or hours. For restaurants this may mean cutting days or times that are not as profitable, such as the beginning of the week or lunch time.

All three challenges could potentially wreak havoc on major attractions that need a high volume of employees as well as retail and food items.

“One of our area attractions was telling me that getting hot dogs is becoming a challenge, so you just never know what’s going to be on the list,” Uhe said.

3 Easy Tips

While some of these challenges may be unavoidable, communicating with the customer can go a long way toward keeping visitor traffic and customer satisfaction high.

1. Let customers know when you’re open If your hours have been adjusted at any time in the last year, make sure that your Google profile, website and social media channels reflect current hours.

local chambers or visitors’ centers.

Eckman said his organization has provided area hotels with a QR code sign that when scanned takes the visitor to area information, which includes events and attractions.

Visit Omaha can also help promote local businesses to out-of-state visitors with free promotions on its website, VisitOmaha.com.

“We are targeting consumers in

Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Des Moines, and Sioux Falls, pushing them to go to VisitOmaha.com to plan their trip,” Ward said.

2. Take a minute to “lift the curtain.”

“Just explaining that because of labor shortages, hours have been cut back or that because of price increases things are more expensive,” Maly said. “We’ve seen it work out well when [customers] can see behind the scenes.”

maintaining a schedule.

“Once you start posting fluff just to hit five posts or 10 posts a week, the customer will notice and start to skim through your content,” he said.

With various customer acquisition studies noting that it may take between 16-20 interactions for a customer to consider purchase, it’s important to keep branding consistent. This means both the visual and messaging components.

“It’s very important to say the same thing over and over again so it breaks through,” Maly said. “If you’re saying different things all the time then people will lose who is saying what.”

What to Say

To break through to customers, businesses need to pinpoint what makes them most unique, and then find a creative way to market that.

Maly described a campaign that his firm ran for Visit North Platte that featured Buffalo Bill riding backwards on a horse. North Platte is home to the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, making Buffalo Bill a local icon.

The tagline read: You don’t have to be a master horseman to experience everything North Platte has to offer.

“You want your customers to stop and think about what they’ve just seen,” Maly said. “Is there something crazy you can hang your hat on?”

Another approach is looking at what experience you can give a customer, and what the lasting memory will be.

“People are looking for firsts, whether it be a child catching their first fish or a foul ball at Werner Park,” Uhe said.

Shaking up Logistics

NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR THE TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY

Regulatory requirements, infrastructure, and other investments have been designed or recently deployed with the safety of travelers in mind. Notably, these initiatives are supporting or affecting the talent that drives the movement of citizens and goods from point “A” to point “B.”

CDL Requirements Change

In a February press release, the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) stated that entry-level drivers subject to Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) must complete required training from a registered training provider before obtaining a CDL for the first time.

At the time of the announcement, the

administration had launched its training provider registry as the “final step in implementing new entry-level driver training standards for individuals seeking to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or certain endorsements.”

Executive Director and Chief Safety Officer Jack Van Steenburg was quoted as saying: “With an increasing number of people applying for CDLs over the past year, there has never been a more important time to implement minimum uniform training standards that ensure new drivers have both the knowledge and skills to operate safely.

“The ELDT regulations were developed with input from driver and training organizations, motor carriers, state licensing agencies, safety advocacy groups, and insurance companies. The Training Provider

Registry will efficiently connect training providers, entry-level drivers, and State Driver Licensing Agencies to promote compliance with these essential safety regulations.”

When asked about the impact the requirements will have on the industry, Luke Busskohl, president and CEO with Arrow Stage Lines, noted that “in a market where it is difficult to hire new motorcoach operators, this regulation makes it even harder (and more costly) for an individual to obtain a CDL license.”

Leadership with the Nebraska Trucking Association expressed similar sentiments to local media outlets, with President and CEO Kent Grisham reportedly questioning the effect of the entry-level CDL training amid persistent driver shortages.

The association has developed a micro-

site with a list of commonly-asked questions about ELDT and answers to aid new drivers getting registered.

CDL Process Clarification

Upon consulting with team members at the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, Public Information Officer Nick Gebhart said its offices have “received significantly more questions” about the ELDT rule as compared to other federal regulation changes.

“It seems to have caused a lot of confusion for both new and veteran drivers,” he said. “Many mistakenly believe this is a new state initiative,” he said. “It’s important to remember that this is a new federal regulation; thus, the Nebraska DMV

can’t answer most questions about this federal program.”

Back in December, the Nebraska DMV got ahead of the rule that would go into effect a few months later with its own announcement about the federal rule. Partly, the DMV noted that training providers (required to become approved Driver Training Schools) should begin applying as soon as possible due to an approval process of up to one month.

Administrator of the Driver Licensing Services Division, Sara O’Rourke, said “this new rule will make a significant impact on those who want to obtain a CDL as well as CDL training providers.”

“It is important to remember that anyone who currently has a CDL will not be required to receive this training, unless they someday apply for an upgraded CDL class or a passenger (P), school bus (S), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement,” she said.

When asked about other adjustments the Nebraska DMV has had to make, Gebhart said CDL skills test appointments

can’t be made unless the driver has met ELDT requirements.

“So, new programming had to be set up to verify a driver is eligible to test,” he said. “So many training providers were approved on a federal level that the Nebraska DMV has had to devote significant man hours contacting to determine if they also would fall under state requirements for Driver Training Schools that charge a fee in return for services.”

He also explained that additional procedures had to be put in place to assist drivers taking the hazardous materials knowledge test for the first time.

“An email address was created and placed on our website (dmv.nebraska.gov) for these drivers to request checking for proof of ELDT before they came into one of our testing offices,” he said.

As expressed by the FMCSA, Gebhart said that the intent of ELDT regulations has been to improve traffic safety and to have bettertrained truck and bus drivers operating on the public roadways.

“Clearly the biggest misconception involves when the Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) can be issued,” he said, when asked about the biggest areas of confusion that have been encountered by the DMV.

Preparing for EV

When asked about other broad industry changes slated to have the biggest effect on the company and industry over the nearer term, Arrow’s Busskohl responded with “the electrification of vehicles.”

As reported by the International Energy Agency, electric vehicles (EVs) are hitting growth milestones with each passing year, with global sales doubling in 2021. Electric utilities have responded in kind with the likes of grid modernization and charging infrastructure investments.

Yet, still the talent to power such vehicles has been described by Busskohl as “limited at best.”

“We have a high need for motorcoach

operators and it’s hard to hire to keep up with demand due to a shortage of qualified applicants,” he said.

To creatively address labor challenges, Busskohl said the company has focused a lot on “culture” — building a good environment for its team members — and on increasing pay.

“All the team members at Arrow Stage Lines strive every day to be safe, humble, hungry (always growing), and people smart,” he said.

Airport Improvements

Following a two-year suspension (due to the impacts of COVID-19), Chief Information and Development Officer Steve McCoy said the Omaha Airport Authority resumed design efforts on the Terminal Modernization Program (TMP) for Eppley Airfield.

Modernization Program will expand and modernize the terminal facilities for travelers flying out of Eppley Airfield,” he explained.

“Components of the program include a new centralized security checkpoint, expanded and enhanced terminal concessions, and a single unified concourse.”

Design, he added, will continue into 2023, with some early construction possible by the end of that year. Significant TMP-related construction could begin in 2024, with a roughly 48-month construction timeline.

Expanded Travel Options

Formerly, in May 2021, McCoy had highlighted how the U.S. Customs and Border Protection opened a Global Entry Enrollment Center at Eppley Airfield, which he described as a “big win for business and leisure travelers throughout the whole state of Nebraska.”

“Global Entry allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon entering the U.S. and also gives travelers access to the TSA PreCheck program,” he

said. “Since the opening of the Global Entry Enrollment Center at Eppley Airfield, demand for the program has remained high, as this service has proven quite popular with the local travel community.”

Late last year, McCoy said American Airlines added their seventh nonstop destination from Omaha with new flights to LaGuardia Airport in New York City.

“American becomes the second airline to fly nonstop to LaGuardia from Eppley Airfield, joining Delta Air Lines in connecting Omaha with New York City,” he said. “These flights increase the availability of access to one of the most important business markets and a popular tourist destination.”

In general, McCoy indicated the metro has been an attractive destination for airlines as “Omaha’s economy has always been very stable, driven by the local business climate.”

“As a result, demand for both outbound and inbound travel has historically proven relatively strong,” he said. “Airlines have continued to invest in our community with nonstop flights, larger aircraft and increased schedules.”

As of March, a reported 371,000 passengers flew in and out of Eppley Airfield, supported by the spring break travel period.

“While 44% higher than March of 2021 when COVID-19 vaccines began to become available for travelers, that total is still 16% less than pre-pandemic levels from March 2019,” McCoy said.

For the first three months of the year, Eppley has seen 950,000-plus passengers.

“Year-to-date passengers are outpacing 2021, although it still lags what was experienced in the first three months of 2019,” he said. “As post-pandemic travel demand continues to recover, we anticipate passenger activity will increase over time.”

Gearing Up for Summer

At the time of this writing, the airfield was gearing up for one of its peak travel seasons.

“Passenger activity is boosted locally by summer vacation travelers along with visitors arriving in Omaha for key events in our community, such as the College World Series,” he said. “As people get used to traveling again, we expect strong travel

McCoy reminds readers that as demand continues to recover from the impacts of COVID-19, the terminal is seeing higher activity, especially during peak times. So, the Omaha Airport Authority is encouraging travelers to arrive no less than two hours prior to their departure to allow time for parking, check-in, and the security screening process.

“The flyOMA.com website and the flyOMA smartphone app both include parking availability, flight information, and security checkpoint wait times to assist passengers in planning their travel experience from Eppley Airfield,” he said.

He also mentioned that work is continuing on airport access, parking modernization and terminal entrance roadway expansion projects.

“Later this summer, a new roadway entrance to the Eppley Airfield terminal will open off Abbott Drive as a part of this project,” McCoy said. “Additionally, the South Garage Restoration Project continues with a modernization that includes wider parking stalls, improved lighting, and enhanced signage and wayfinding for vehicle circulation. A new express ramp will provide direct access to Level 3 of the South Garage where the Premier Parking area will be relocated for the most convenient access to the terminal.”

And, last but not least, while McCoy said the federal government no longer mandates the wearing of face masks in airports such as Eppley Airfield, masks remain optional for all travelers.

“We would encourage our customers to continue to check on health guidelines with their airline and at their final location,” he said.

There is no doubt about it: the last two years have caused a significant disruption in what we once called the ‘traditional’ work environment.

With people forced to work remote for an indefinite amount of time, workplace safety was put on the back burner for many companies.

But now, as more and more people are heading back into the office for in-person work, businesses of all sizes in varying industries are finding that the topic of workplace safety needs to be re-addressed and tailored to the ‘new’ environment that 2022 has brought.

“As we reenter the workforce and see what’s going on, we should be thinking about retraining not only for our jobs, but for what is new in the workplace … reset and retrain, whether you think you need it or not. Shake off the cobwebs,” said Greg Holder, vice president of risk control services at Lockton Companies.

New OSHA Standards

With the world operating in a new normal, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has recently released some new guidelines. In April, it launched the National Emphasis Program on heat, which aims to protect workers from the threat of heat-related illness.

The nationwide enforcement mechanism will be able to inspect workplaces for heat-related hazards, both indoors and Page 14 • May 27, 2022­

outdoors. The program also provides heat priority days when temperatures are expected to reach over 80 degrees.

Also in April, OSHA renewed its commitment to agriculture worker safety in and around grain bins. Some of the focus points that were discussed included adding safety harnesses and anchored lifelines, placing a trained observer outside of the bin in case of an emergency, and testing the air in the bin before entering.

There are also still a variety of emerging issues in the health care field that OSHA will continue to look closely at. In June 2021, OSHA published an interim final rule that put an emergency temporary standard in place for health care workers to be protected from exposure to COVID-19.

Training Protocol

Now that more people are back in the office, it is critical to take the time to re-train employees on what safety means.

If that is neglected, businesses can expect more injuries and worker’s compensation claims to skyrocket.

“During the pandemic we saw a decrease in traditional training, both online and in-person. As employees transition back to work, we believe that it is crucial for companies to return to pre-pandemic training protocol,” said Eric Koeppe, president and CEO of the National Safety

With a renewed focus on wellness and safety guidelines at work, there is greater attention to keeping workers not only productive, but safe. That’s why having a written safety protocol outlined and distributed to each employee is key.

If creating guidelines is something that you don’t have experience in, talking to a private safety and health consultant is a good first step.

Michael Connett of Connett Safety Solutions said the benefits of working with an experienced consultant will save time and ensure you have proper safety guidelines in place.

“This is a great way to ensure that your company is covered regarding these issues,” he said. “It is imperative that we remember the basic safety rules that your company had

had in place prior to the pandemic.

“In addition to those previous ‘old school rules,’ we now should also observe and follow the new rules that will be in place at most businesses … we all want and deserve a safe and healthy workplace.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 48 individuals in Nebraska were killed in workplace incidents in 2020. Of those, 26 of them were from transportation incidents. Nationally, falls, slips, and trips were the second-most common fatal event, making up 17% of all fatal workplace injuries.

“In the state of Nebraska, roadway incidents should not be the leading cause of workplace fatalities. The data shows we are not doing enough to protect our workers,” Koeppe said.

“Workplace fatalities should never

be considered a cost of doing business.

Employers need to take a methodical approach to safety that includes having training, policies, and risk assessment techniques in place to address causes of fatalities and injuries.”

The techniques don’t need to be complicated, either.

Chris Cameron, director of occupational health for Makovicka Physical Therapy, recommended that business owners consider implementing a stretching/ activity program for all employees to participate in during the day.

“Most employers in manufacturing and production have these programs in place, but more and more office-based employers are embracing the idea,” he said.

as weight loss/dietary plans and exercise competitions. The employer can use these initiatives to help lower health insurance premiums by showing that they have certain percentages of their workforce involved in healthy lifestyle behaviors.”

“A close relationship between employer and provider allows the provider to make better recommendations for job rotation, restrictions, and accurate returnto-work planning because the provider has full-scope knowledge of the employer’s operations and the demands of each of the jobs.”

Positive Work Culture

People from all walks of life are continuing to grapple with the fallout of the pandemic. In addition, there are a host of other world events that are causing people stress and anxiety. Learning to process the many feelings and emotions that come can be difficult. Because of this, more and more employees are experiencing mental health crises that are impacting how they complete their jobs.

In fact, the negative impact on mental well-being is causing a lack of focus, which unfortunately can lead to accidents

or fatal mistakes at work.

“We are seeing a mental reshaping and that can manifest itself in a lack of focus.

Without question, injuries have happened more because the employee’s focus was off. In the last 90 days alone, we have seen more reports of fatalities and more severe injuries,” Holder said.

“As they head back to in-person work, employees might recognize that they are different than they were before. Mental health is a huge thing.”

He shared that it is important for employers to recognize the struggles that their workers may be facing transitioning from remote-only work, and that it may take time to rebuild the company’s culture.

“Company cultures have taken a hit,” he explained. “And now, with the ‘great resignation,’ employers are struggling with the fact that they may only have a limited amount of time with their employees. So, they are working hard to ask themselves how they can get their culture back.”

Chapter is currently partnering with the National Council for Mental Wellbeing to offer Mental Health First Aid training to assist companies with the skills to respond to mental illness and substance abuse.

“Mental health concerns in the workplace may have been caused due to an increase in workload, a change in the work environment, or simply the change in one’s regular routine,” Koeppe said.

“Mental health challenges affect all organization levels. Our goal is to work together to combat the issue.”

Safety Begins with You

Cameron said that as employees find their rhythm back on-site at work, take things slowly.

“Slowly introducing new, or slowly resuming old activities is the safest way to prevent overuse injuries,” he said. “I tend to have people increase their activity levels by no more than 20% each week to help their bodies gradually accommodate new stresses.”

And, if you do happen to be injured on the job, reporting it in a timely fashion and getting medical help is not only helpful physically, but financially for the employer.

“The biggest complaint I hear from employers about soft tissue injuries is, ‘I wish our people would report injuries sooner,’: he said. “There has been a drastic shift in the last 10 years from employers resenting employees reporting minor injuries to now embracing (and often thanking) employees for reporting soft-tissue injuries early so they can be treated earlier. This reduces the financial impact on the employer in the long run and benefits the employee by making them healthier and more productive while at work.”

“We all have someone in our lives that loves and cares about us and is expecting us to walk through the door at the end of the day,” Connett said. ”Our actions during the day shouldn’t be the cause that person doesn’t see you walk through that door. Safety is easy if you just think about it.”

The LCBAA board named our Alumni of the Year award after Doug Goodman, who was a member of Class 1 and exemplified community leadership and involvement. He served on numerous boards, including Iowa Western Community College, Iowa West Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, SWI Education Foundation, Pottawattamie County Development Corp., and Leadership Alumni. He was also active in many other civic organizations and fundraisers such as Rebuild Bayliss Park. His 2018 passing was the loss of a true community leader.

To qualify for the award, nominees must be a graduate of Leadership Council Bluffs and be a current, paid member of the LCBAA. Each nominee is judged on the quality of their leadership performance and/or the extent to which they have made a meaningful contribution to the community.

Carol Wood has dedicated her lifetime career to serving children and families and the Council Bluffs community for over four decades. Carol led a successful capital campaign for Children’s Square that built new residential cottages to provide a better space for the children in their care to feel safe and comfortable. If Melanie Phelan’s original career plan had held up, she’d be spending her days planning one corporate soiree after another. Instead, life led her down a curvy professional road that led to co-founding Evergreen Enterprises, a real estate development and restaurant management company, of which she is president.

Do What You Love “The original plan was not to be doing what I’m doing now,” she said with a laugh. “I planned on being the event planner that could do, basically, fundraising events — where my true passion was. I focused on that quite a bit. Those were super fun.

“Really, the way that this worked out was essentially I was researching a potential wedding venue in a town outside of Omaha and that didn’t pan out. It was then I thought, well, why don’t we open up a brewery and then a restaurant and then another bar and then another bar.

Creating and hosting could become an everyday experience, not a one-time thing.”

Phelan co-founded Evergreen Enterprises with three partners, each of whom brings a different strength to the table, and began developing stand-alone commercial projects including Sunnyside on Center, Site-1 Brewing and The Bull Moose. In each of these, Phelan handles design work as well as lends her trained eye for enhancing the customer experience, something honed by her time in the events business.

“As an event director, it’s your job to make sure that the client and everyone in the room is experiencing what you want them to experience and that they are not distracted, that they are being taken care of and being served,” she said. “It’s the same when we open doors to a new spot and I’m training the team. I stress that every detail matters.

“If the sound is too loud and you notice that a couple seems irritated by the sound, you turn it down or you say, ‘It’s pretty loud over here; there’s another table just three seats away that’s the quietest in the house. We’ll be happy to move you.’ When you approach things like

that, it really is just every detail building into the experience.”

Besides the technical aspects — learned both on the job as well as during her time at Iowa State University where she studied event management — Phelan has also become adept in the art of managing people. This means the company’s 30 employees as well as the many vendors with whom she interacts on various projects.

Managing More “This might sound a little silly but on the Gallup top tech strengths, one of the five that I have is ‘woo,’” she said. “I had no idea that my woo would be so useful in the construction world. When I am on the phone or email or even in person with vendors or landlords or something and things were not going right, just being a decent human is pretty powerful and people take note.”

As the projects get bigger and more comprehensive, Phelan expects her people and project management skills to play an even more critical role in the company’s success.

“We started out as just one-offs; one empty building, how do we develop it? As we’ve grown, we see how important it is to be vertically integrated,” she said. “Over the next three years, I will be learning a lot more about land development and making sure first floor rental spaces work well together.”

“I don’t need to open 10 restaurants a year.

That’s not the goal. One or two do really well. But owning the building from the very beginning, from the dirt, is really where we’re headed for the future.”
