BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER VIC GUTMAN’S HALF-CENTURY OF EXCEPTIONAL EVENTS

Bringing People Together

2024 has been an extraordinary year so far for Vic Gutman.

To start with, his alma mater, the University of Michigan, won the national title in football in January. More recently, Gutman welcomed his first granddaughter, who followed seven grandsons.

His fundraising and events management company, VGA, is also marking 2024 as a special year, beginning with its January bisection into two divisions, one with new ownership. It’s also the 30th anniversary of the Omaha Farmers Market, the 25th year of the Holiday Lights Festival, and the 20th year of the Holiday Market. 2024 also marks the 50th — and final — Omaha Summer Arts Festival.

Gutman has been a champion of the Omaha community for over half a century, but he’s actually from the Detroit, Michigan, area.

Passion for people

In another paradox, he’s heavily associated with the arts, but is not an artist or performer. Gutman co-founded his first art fair in Ann Arbor in 1971 when he was a 19-year-old University of Michigan undergrad. It was as much about bringing people together as it was about spotlighting art and artists.

“I loved doing it, and I loved the spirit of it,” he said.

Several more Michigan art fairs followed before Gutman graduated and left the area for a new community 700 miles away.

“The short answer is that I came to Omaha as a VISTA volunteer for Boys

Town in the summer of ‘74,” Gutman explained.

EVENTS

VISTA, an acronym for Volunteers in Service to America, was founded in 1965 as a national service program, comparable to a stateside version of the Peace Corps, that aimed to alleviate poverty. Gutman also entered law school at Creighton University.

Omaha Summer Arts Festival

He was intrigued by downtown Omaha. Where many others saw a decline, Gutman saw potential. In 1975, he coordinated his first arts festival in Omaha with 185 visual artists in a three-block area of the Old Market.

“The Old Market was the inspiration for starting the art festival …To me, it was an absolutely perfect site for that kind of event,” Gutman said. “And it did translate extremely well. Having the artists on the cobblestones of the Old Market, having the entertainment, having those shops and restaurants that were there just enhanced the whole environment. So, it was a perfect setting.”

In a time before email, the internet, and mobile phones, Gutman created his first Omaha event impressively quickly with support from only one assistant, who like him also worked full-time at Boys Town.

“We got it going in just three months. I got approval from the Old Market Business Association to go ahead with it in mid-March, and it [took place] at the very end of June,” he said. “We had people in the Old Market who really helped, shop owners. And it was kind of a perfect translation to Omaha.”

VIC GUTMAN’S HALF-CENTURY OF EXCEPTIONAL
It was always important to everyone involved in organizing the arts festival that it be done as perfectly as possible … We wanted to always be a high-quality event.

The 1975 version of the Omaha Summer Arts Festival was quite different logistically than the iconic affair of today, Gutman said.

“The artists were all put in smaller spaces very close together in the Old Market,” he said. “We were very primitive in the entertainment in the first year.

“We basically had a very crude sound system. We had a theater, we even had belly dancing. The music was all played on a record player, and when the wind would blow, that was really bad for the belly dancers because the wind kept blowing the needle and it was skipping the music. Almost all of the performances we got were for free or were very inexpensive.”

The Omaha Summer Arts Festival became an annual event, moving several times to new locations. The 50th festival scheduled to take place in Aksarben Village on June 7, 8 and 9 features 135 artists from throughout the country, selected through a juried process. They’ll expect to collectively sell around $175,000 worth of art, Gutman said.

The festival grounds are three times larger than the first fair, encompassing a nine-block area.

“Now, they’re much more spread out,” Gutman said. “There’s much more room to walk for the public.”

Incredible logistics

The programming from the first to the last festival also developed significantly. In recent years, the Omaha Summer Arts Festival has featured multiple visual art elements, from a local artist showcase to live art demonstrations; youth-focused activities such as a children’s fair and an exhibition of student artists; a diverse schedule of music acts on two stages throughout the three days of the festival; and food and drink from a wide selection of vendors.

“Our total budget for the first year was $4,000,” Gutman said. “In today’s dollars, that would be about $23,000. Now the festival budget is close to $500,000.”

Raising the money to support the festival, for which organizers have never charged admission, became increasingly difficult in recent years, Gutman said.

The behind-the-scenes preparation is extensive, with thousands of hours of work involved and the inclusion of event volunteers, local art galleries, nonprofit organizations, sponsors, security personnel and other professionals.

The logistics of site planning for such a large event start with pulling permits and include planning exhibitor space, mapping out the location of the various facets of the festival, constructing stages with lighting and sound systems, and even obtaining and placing barricades and signs.

Gutman chuckled as he recounted a request he’d heard over and over throughout the years: “Why can’t you do this every weekend?”

“Each year, there are unique challenges. Some years we’ve had horrible storms come through and had to pick up the pieces after,” he said. “We want to make it look easy. But people have no idea how much time and effort and the nerves and stress that are involved with producing an event like this.”

It’s been well worth the work. Gutman said that although the Omaha Summer Arts Festival has been in several locations, he feels that its Old Market debut as a large, multifaceted annual event helped reinvigorate downtown Omaha.

VIC GUTMAN, PRESIDENT OF VGA

“This was meant to show people what an exciting downtown could be like,” he said.

Ending the Omaha Summer Arts Festival after its 50th year was a tough call, Gutman said, but he sees the final festival as a celebration of a halfcentury of success.

“I feel like it was the right decision. It was always important to everyone involved in organizing the arts festival that it be done as perfectly as possible … We wanted to always be a high-quality event,” he said. “We never wanted to sacrifice that. We never wanted it to be anything less.”

Branching out

Omaha Summer Arts Festival was only the beginning of Gutman’s presence in Omaha. By the end of the 1970s, he’d expanded his events portfolio by introducing Christmas at Union Station and coordinating a Grecian Festival.

He incorporated VGA (formerly Vic Gutman & Associates) in 1978, the same year he earned his law degree. Gutman began serving as an assistant public defender for Douglas County in 1980 but left the field of law in 1986, retaining his legal credentials as they were useful growing events with VGA. In 1987, he hired VGA’s first full-time employee.

The company continued to flourish throughout the 1980s and 1990s, founding, coordinating, or managing numerous one-time, multi-season, or multi-year public or organizational events in the area and a few in Gutman’s native Detroit.

A few highlights include the Omaha Farmers Market, which launched in 1994 and continues at two sites during its May to October season; and the Millennium Lights celebration that ushered in the year 2000 and has continued as the annual Holiday Lights Festival.

Aiding the community

In addition to events management, VGA evolved to offer nonprofit services like grants management, securing more than $25 million in funding each year from public and private sources for nonprofits of all sizes.

After coordinating the grand opening of The Rose Theater in 1995, Gutman was asked to serve as interim executive director in 2004, a role he filled until 2007. After Omaha’s Tri-Faith Initiative was founded in 2006, VGA provided services from strategy planning to fundraising support, helping bring the ambitious vision of the unique interfaith project to life in the ensuing years.

At the start of 2024, VGA officially became two companies: VGA Events, and VGA Grants & Fundraising. VGA Grants & Fundraising is now owned and operated by two of Gutman’s former VGA grant writers, Mary Hubl and Shane Pekny. VGA Events continues under Gutman’s ownership and leadership, but he’s stepping away from event management.

It’s not a retirement in a traditional sense, since Gutman will continue to work on special projects.

“This is my last year of organizing; I’m bowing out of doing events … although all of the events will transition to new management; we’re working with the different boards on that transition,” Gutman said. “I’ve been doing this in Omaha since 1975. And I’ve been doing it overall since 1971.”

LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS AIM FOR LASTING SUPPORT

Safe space

Celebration. Organized events and campaigns.

Amplified support and awareness. Pride Month is all of these things and more. For many community and business leaders, it also represents much more than a once-a-year commitment.

2024 Heartland Pride is particularly special for JohnCarl Denkovich as it’s the first time Omaha ForUs will have a physical space open to the public after festivities.

“Omaha ForUs has been hard at work since our opening in July 2023 to prepare opportunities for our community and allies to engage with the center and our program offerings,” said Denkovich, executive director.

“In June, we will formally begin our volunteer training and engagement initiative, which mobilizes the power, generosity, and love in our community to support the center’s operations and improve our ability to offer more programs, services, socials, and events for LGBTQ+ individuals and families.”

In fact, Denkovich described Omaha ForUs, located at 3337 N. 107th St., as the only LGBTQ+ center of its kind located between Chicago and Denver.

“There is an immense pressure to be all things to all people,”

Denkovich noted. “Simply, we can’t do that without individuals, foundations, communities, and corporations recognizing the increasing need and joining with us to sustain these efforts.”

Denkovich underscored the heightened visibility, courtesy of the local Pride parade and festival, and the potential to engage with individuals and families who may need or benefit from their work but who still have no idea Omaha ForUs exists.

“This is an opportunity to make connections and increase the utility of our space and our programs, as well as improve the health, wellness, and belonging for our community,” they said.

Additionally, its behavioral health and wellness, community support, food and hygiene pantry, clothing closet, and educational programs continue long after the parades have ended.

“We serve members of our community who might otherwise never receive support or positive engagement within the human services systems of care,” Denkovich stated. “Of the nearly $281 million available in the United States for LGBTQ+ dedicated philanthropy each year, less than $100,000 flows to Nebraska — scarcely more than Omaha’s median household income.”

As they put it, Omaha ForUs is fighting to spotlight vibrant LGBTQ+ communities in Nebraska and western Iowa:

“We could be so much more with collaboration and support from the regional and national philanthropic community,” they said.

Open arms

The Brownie Bar Bakery is fostering community and inclusivity that also transcends a single month or initiative, according to co-owner Michael Mitilier.

“Brownie Bar offers quarterly community grants, as well as fundraising opportunities, to any nonprofit that makes Omaha a better place to live,” Mitilier said. “We also offer free, safe meeting space for any community organization that needs a place to meet.”

In June, Brownie Bar is supporting several metro organizations by advertising their programs and websites to coincide with Pride.

“We feel it is important to make sure that everyone in our community is treated fairly and with respect and instill that in our employees,” Mitilier said.

“You get more from being inclusive, as opposed to excluding others.”

Cultural fabric

Not unlike other ERGs, Cox emphasizes community and representation at the company. As a “peer-led” group, Pride promotes workplace inclusion, generates organization-wide connections, and allows employees to hear diverse perspectives.

Specific to this June, employees engage in discussion and education about the importance of allyship, and a volunteer event will span about 20 volunteers helping to prepare a neighborhood garden for planting.

“Diversity and inclusion are part of the Cox values all year long,” said Vice President Kim Rowell. “Year-round, we’re committed to a supplier diversity program. We value and encourage the use of diverse suppliers because it strengthens our communities and contributes to the economic well-being of an increased number of businesses and their employees.”

Elevating

For E Creative, Pride Month efforts will lean into what the company does best as a communications strategist firm — the likes of sharing content on its social channels to elevate related activities and amplifying the impact of LGBTQIA+ individuals in both industry and the community, according to President and CEO Esther Mejia.

“Advocating for historically underrepresented groups is one of our core objectives,” Mejia said. “Our work aims to incorporate messaging and imagery that reflects individuals from all walks of life.”

Fittingly, VP of Client Strategy Kate Revollo noted the company works with for-profits and nonprofits that provide direct impact to the LGBTQIA+ community.

“At E Creative, we are transparent about who we are and who we support,” she said. “By being visible and true to ourselves, we hope to inspire others to be their genuine selves. People have successful businesses, are leaders within their industries, and are active community members and make an impact by showing up as their authentic selves.”

Mejia also emphasized the importance of enriching the community by creating work cultures that are welcoming to people of diverse backgrounds.

“E Creative collaborates with various organizations to promote diverse leadership and advocate for increased access to resources and opportunities for individuals from all intersections, including the LGBTQIA+ community,” Mejia said. “Success also means helping people gain a deeper understanding of each other and realizing that we have more in common than we think.”

Efforts to be more inclusive don’t have to be big.

After acquiring the Little King franchise operation in 2021, Lockwood Development is announcing that the firm’s first Omaha Little King store opened to the public on November 1, with a Grand Opening featuring the Creighton Volleyball team scheduled for Saturday, November 5. The store, located at 8602 West Dodge Road, represents a step forward for both the brand and its footprint in the Omaha area. “Our new store is very close to where the very first Little King store was located when it opened in 1969,” said Chip James, president and CEO of Lockwood Development. “That’s no coincidence. We’re truly inspired by the roots of this historic franchise, and we look forward to carrying that spirit forward to loyal Little King customers, as well as a new generation of Omaha residents.” The 1500-square-foot store combines modern design and an inviting dining area with classic Little King branding and artwork. Customers can expect to order from Little King’s beloved menu featuring subs and sandwiches made with bread baked in store and fresh-sliced meat, as well as soups and desserts, while taking advantage of a variety of conveniences, including a drive-thru. Day to day operations at the 86th and Dodge location, as well as the operation of Lockwood Development’s subsequent stores, wil be overseen by Mark Edwards, an Omaha native who grew up in the fast-food business. “It’s an honor to merge the industry I’m passionate about with a brand that means a great deal to me and so many families in Omaha,” said Edwards. “Little King has more than 50 years of rich history in our area, and now we get the opportunity to move it forward, modernize it, and highlight the very best of what it has to offer.” The new store is the first in a series of new locations James, Edwards, and the team at Lockwood Development plan to open in Omaha and Lincoln. About Little King Founded in Omaha in 1969 by Sid Wertheim, Little King Deli & Subs is known for its deli-style sub sandwiches, made with bread baked fresh on site and meat sliced to order. In 2001, Wertheim’s son Bob took over the company before its sale to Lockwood Development in 2021. Language Access Week

CELEBRATING MULTILINGUAL ORGANIZATIONS

JENNIFER ADHIMA

CHIEF PROGRAM OFFICER, NEBRASKA EARLY CHILDHOOD COLLABORATIVE

World Speaks Omaha will launch the inagural Language Access Week June 10-14. This year, the organization will highlight other organizations that offer services in multiple languages.

“World Speaks is an organization that believes language access is a human right,” said Leah Whitney Chavez, executive director and founder of World Speaks.

Founded in 2016, the organization promotes and educates people about language access, provides interpretation and translation services, and teaches language courses. Today, it serves the Omaha community in about 24 languages, and to date, it has reached over 10,000 people.

This year, Language Access Week will begin with the Omaha City Council’s recognition and Language Access Week proclamation on June 11. The day prior, the organization will start a social media campaign to raise $2,000 for crucial programming.

The week is sponsored by Cox, Valmont Industries, the Omaha Community Foundation, and Kathmandu MoMo Station. Cox and Valmont Industries have

GINA TRANISI

CO-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NEBRASKA WRITERS COLLECTIVE

each provided $2,000 in matching funds.

“The work we do is important because all members of our community do not have equal access to critical and vital information, as well as additional resources when English is not their first or preferred language,” Chavez said.

“Interpretation and translation remove these barriers. The educational resources we offer help individuals and organizations look internally to assess how they can better serve their clients and constituents who would benefit from equity with language access.”

Other organizations and businesses are taking note, too, recognizing the benefits of offering their services and programs in multiple languages.

Identifying a need

The Nebraska Early Childhood Collaborative (NECC), which aims to connect, equip, and empower child care providers and parents, recently saw the need to create services in Spanish. Its programming provides mentorship, business and professional development opportunities, and more.

“Our implementation process and the challenges that came looked different depending on the area of work,” said Jennifer Adhima, chief program officer at NECC.

For example, the organization’s Parent Ambassador program was intentionally built to accommodate non-English speakers. The team sought feedback and suggestions during the planning phase. This included switching to World Speaks as its translation partner for more quality interpretation and talking to other interpreters to understand which methods would work best in different environments.

“When we provide access and equality through language justice, we are able to give all parents and all child care providers the guidance and resources they need to give all children the education they deserve,” Adhima said. “We are better serving our community when we are providing equitable services through a language justice lens.”

The Omaha Municipal Land Bank (OMLB) is another organization that saw the benefits of serving people in multiple languages. OMLB developed a Limited English Proficiency Plan and raised funds for implementation. Having access to World Speaks for translation support was crucial. Once the organization was able to provide translation services, it saw an immediate positive impact.

“Piloting live interpretation during an exclusively Spanish-speaking conference helped us reach people we previously hadn’t connected with,” said Leslie Smith, executive director for OMLB. “We saw how many people

are being left out of the current housing shortage conversation who could potentially contribute solutions. This was a validating experience, as it served as motivation to keep up the energy. Language access should not be a luxury, it should be the standard way of doing business.”

Opening doors

For other organizations or businesses considering multilingual access, Smith said they shouldn’t look at it as just a program, but instead as a necessary business function.

“Incorporating language access opens doors for inclusivity, which should justify your efforts to reach as many people as possible,” she said.

Nebraska Writers Collective uses creative writing to build community.

Recognizing that Nebraska is home to more than 145,000 immigrants, refugees, and multilingual writers, the organization identified a gap in its services to meet these people where they were.

Through freelance translators and eventually partnership with World Speaks, Nebraska Writers Collective has been able to roll out multilingual services,

LESLIE SMITH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, OMAHA MUNICIPAL LAND BANK

including translation of the Nebraska Youth Poet Laureate program instructions into the seven most utilized languages across the state.

“Language is always shifting and changing,” said Gina Tranisi, co-executive director of Nebraska Writers Collective. “In our field, we believe in creating better access and equity for all people because writing becomes more vibrant, dynamic, and authentic when people are given permission to write their stories in the words and languages that resonate most with them.”

Tranisi said that for businesses or organizations pondering how to integrate multilingual services in their business operations or outreach, it’s important to network and gain expertise from other organizations that have successfully implemented their programming. The information that you get can be practical and invaluable.

“Know where your knowledge stops and where someone else’s expertise begins,” she said. “Seek them out, be honest about your needs and limitations, and ask for help. Remember that language access for all means always, not just right now or when it’s convenient.”

SENIOR DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, NOMI HEALTH

For decades, being a corporate star meant having refined leadership skills, while companies invested significant amounts of money in consultants and personal coaches to cultivate these desirable traits. Today, many are finding the same benefit through serving on a local board, allowing them to grow personally and professionally while serving a good cause.

“Many professionals choose to work on boards that align with their personal and professional interests,” said Steve Swanstrom, president and CEO of Centris Federal Credit Union and current chairman of the board for the Nebraska Humane Society.

“Speaking for myself, I enjoy the opportunity to support the community and meet people I may not have the opportunity to otherwise meet. It also gives me the opportunity to grow my leadership skills with a diverse group of leaders from different industries.”

A BOARD OF DIRECTORS

ANNE  HINDERY

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, NONPROFIT ASSOCIATION OF THE MIDLANDS

Board service is beneficial for employers as they benefit from committed leadership and insights, while the individual can stretch their skills in new and creative ways.

“Every successful organization requires good governance, strategic direction, and accountability,” he said. “In general, board members provide the independence and support necessary to achieve these requirements. Serving on a board also gains experience that can be valuable to other organizations. It’s also a great way to network with others in the community who may be aware of other board opportunities.”

Raise your hand

Rebecca Armstrong Langle, senior director of community engagement for Nomi Health, said one of the bigger misconceptions people have is that it requires a highly specialized skill or credentials to be effective.

“People often think they need to be an accountant or that they have to be super well connected in the community, or that they need to be independently wealthy,” she said. “But boards really need all sorts of people that represent who their communities are. That’s the only way to have a truly well-functioning board — to have different perspectives and different backgrounds. And that’s really what makes a board vibrant and healthy.”

Langle, who manages the Nomi Health Foundation board and has sat on other boards, said one of the best ways for a first-time board aspirant is to begin as a volunteer.

“There are a limited number of board positions and you want to be selective as to where you go because you want it to be something you’re passionate about,” she said. “I do think volunteering for an organization or being someone who receives services from an organization or just having some sort of connection beforehand is really great.

“The biggest thing about being on a board is the time commitment and your passion about the mission. If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing when you’re there, it’s not something that you’re going to prioritize in your life. If you volunteer first, and it’s not what you thought it was, it’s very easy to take a step back. It’s kind of like testing the waters to volunteer first.”

Ready to work

This approach is all the more vital today, given the increased expectations many organizations have for board members.

“Serving on a board is more challenging now,” said Anne Hindery, CEO of the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands. “What we’re seeing in the nonprofit community are workforce shortages and so board members have to have tough conversations surrounding that. There’s a fiduciary responsibility, you know, being a steward of money that doesn’t belong to you.

“Boards have to be very strategic today. OK, we’ve survived the pandemic, now how do we reinvent ourselves? What are we looking at two, three, four years down the road? When I recruit board members, that’s the kind of brain power I’m looking for.”

interested in serving on boards and for good reason. Board service is a key networking tool and a feather in the cap of any aspiring professional.

While she discourages those merely seeking a seat to pad their resume, she did point to several professional advantages that come with board service.

“It allows someone to develop their natural leadership skills, their industry expertise, and their networking connections,” she said. “Board service can improve your soft skills because you learn about teamwork and problem-solving. You can sharpen your analytical skills. It’s a good way for people new to the community or young professionals to get a new perspective of their community as well.

“You know, we all get so stuck in our day jobs that it’s hard to realize sometimes that there’s a whole other set of things in the world going on. Being on a board of directors is just a great way to give back
