KIM WHITTAKER WANTS MORE WOMEN IN TECH

First National Technology Solutions (FNTS) president Kim Whittaker is a Silicon Prairie player. A subsidiary of First National of Nebraska, FNTS is a managed IT services provider for hundreds of clients.

Locally, it earned the Greater Omaha Chamber Business Excellence Award for Leadership. Nationally, it’s been named a Rising Star by tech research and advisory influencer ISG (Information Services Group). Whittaker joined FNTS, a then-startup, in 1996. She worked in finance, then sales, before managing the entire sales team.

Notable gains

She assumed the presidency in 2017, becoming FNTS’s first female president. The company has experienced robust growth since then.

“Our revenues have doubled over the past five years,” Whittaker said.

She said the company recently launched a five-year plan and expects to double again, averaging 20% annual growth.

FNTS works nationwide, counting Fortune 100 organizations among its customers.

“We work with clients across all industries,” she said. “For most, we support their most critical applications.

“A lot of our clients are in heavily regulated industries. So we have a very strong security posture that helps differentiate us. Probably 45% of our business is within financial services or insurance. We do quite a bit with the public sector (including state and local government clients), health care, manufacturing, transportation-logistics, retail.”

New client growth last year drove the onboarding of two dozen new employees, increasing the FNTS payroll to 130. Most employees work at the company’s 201 N. 16th St. headquarters.

The north downtown campus includes one of two FNTS data centers. The second is in Lyle, Illinois. Whittaker anticipates more employee growth to follow the expected new client growth.

“We’re also investing, like everyone else, in automation and tools. Where we can gain greater efficiencies by leveraging tools, we’ll do that,” she said.

Setting FNTS apart

FNTS struggled early on in building name recognition and brand awareness in the competitive, fluid, and West Coast prevalent IT industry. It’s since made significant strides in increasing visibility.

“We’ve really invested a lot the last five to eight years from a marketing perspective,” Whittaker said. “Building partnerships with name IT brands has helped in getting our name out there. We’ve got extensive relationships now with the biggest players in this space — IBM, Microsoft, Dell-EMC, Ensensor.”

Whittaker leverages FNTS’s Midwest roots.

“That Midwest work ethic and culture really shine through with our delivery and how much our people care about that end result,” she said.

Customizable solutions

Greater efficiencies and cost savings are two value-adds FNTS prides itself on.

Something that I loved about FNTS and technology from day one is that it is always evolving and changing and very fast-paced.
KIM WHITTAKER, PRESIDENT, FNTS

“We’ve got multi-cloud capabilities,” Whittaker said. “We really try to work with clients on where they are at with their IT infrastructure and in adopting the cloud and trying to determine what cloud offering and solution is the best fit. It might be a multi-cloud approach or a hybrid approach that includes Microsoft Azure, utilizing our data centers and infrastructure, and the customer having some equipment.”

Far from a one-size-fits-all scenario, FNTS finds the right mix depending on individual customer needs.

“We look at what is going to optimize their environment and drive the performance they want and do it in the most cost-effective manner,” she said. “The benefit customers get by leveraging our capabilities is that we have this capacity from a hardware perspective, so there’s economies of scale they get just by coming onto our infrastructures.

While technology is evolving, FNTS remains committed to helping current clients who have legacy technology. FNTS created a mainframe apprenticeship program with Franklin Apprenticeships.

Two individuals are currently in training to become mainframe system administrators, allowing them to help organizations needing computing power and stability when it comes to legacy technology.

Relationship over transaction

Whittaker appreciates what her background in sales and client relationships has given her as president.

“I still to this day love spending time with our clients and learning their business models and understanding where their challenges are and ultimately how can we help them solve those challenges,” she said.

She takes pride in the company’s high customer satisfaction and retention scores.

“Even as technology gets more complex we continue to deliver at a super high level for clients day in and day out,” she said.

FNTS recently launched a professional services consulting practice whose team helps clients early on with their cloud journey — identifying the right cloud solution and helping design and implement it. That same team also helps mainframe clients running on legacy IBM technology modernize their applications.

“We’ve also launched a software advocacy practice that leverages our skill sets and capabilities to help clients negotiate the best terms for the software licensing they subscribe to,” she said.

Encouraging new leaders

The business and home digital technology markets were still only a whisper when the Kearney, Nebraska, native graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and finance.

Her first real introduction to IT didn’t happen until she worked at Principal Financial Group and First National Bank, along the way earning her MBA in

business and information technology from UNO.

Whittaker has thrived in the patriarchal and prescriptive tech industry without a technical background.

“I’ve seen that with female leaders, whether they’re CIOs or CTOs within companies or heading up infrastructure or applications, not all of them have an actual technical degree,” she said. “But they’ve been able to move up within their companies and advance in their careers because of their leadership skills.”

She attributes part of her intuitive leadership to the sports she participated in as a youth. She captained most of the teams she competed on.

“Sports has definitely played a big part in shaping who I am and I think that definitely correlates from a business perspective. A lot of people at FNTS participated in college or high school sports,” she said.

The experience of working with teammates to achieve a collective goal, she said, is highly transferable.

“You’re used to working and communicating together towards the same goals. You want to win. All of those characteristics apply to the business world,” Whittaker said. “I try to bring that same kind of culture to FNTS. We’ve really invested the last few years in our culture and building that team environment, collaborative approach, and open, transparent communication.”

Because she believes leadership can be nurtured, she makes it a point to seek and support leaders at FNTS.

“We say leadership exists everywhere. We truly empower our people and value their opinions and insights,” she said. “I think a lot of that comes back from sports and being part of a team. I rely very heavily on our team here at FNTS. Everything we accomplish is because of the team we’ve built here. Collectively, we can get a lot of things accomplished.”

In addition to supporting employees in staying current on compliance and certifications, FNTS also brings in leadership development programs, speakers, and additional resources.

FNTS is also partnering with the University of Nebraska Omaha’s College of Information Science & Technology to give students job shadow experiences. FNTS and UNO plan to launch a new mainframe curriculum next year for undergrads. The company is also engaging with MBA candidates at UNO on how to bring new services to market.

Disrupting status quo

With women still outliers in IT, Whittaker endeavors to bring more women to the field.

“It is a huge need. Any way I can be an inspiration and share with girls what the career path is, I try to do,” she said. “I participate in girls/women in tech events.

“When kids see someone that looks like them doing that job or role they believe, yeah, I can do that, too. We’ve increased the number of women within our organization. They’re in technical, account management,

KIM WHITTAKER, PRESIDENT, FNTS

marketing, and finance roles. We have more diversity in general throughout the organization.”

Using her own experience as an example, she said, “You don’t necessarily have to have a technical education to advance to a very high position within an [IT] organization.

“To work in tech doesn’t mean you have to have a programming or engineering degree. You can still advance within a tech organization. There’s a lot of opportunity in the industry. The technology space is very rewarding — just because of the challenge. You’re always learning. You’re able to solve problems.”

In-house, she said, she often does one-on-one coaching with women to be a sounding board. She’s also worked with the Nebraska Tech Collaborative and the AIM Institute, on whose board she serves, supporting initiatives to build the state’s tech pipeline.

“I’m encouraged with the number of initiatives underway right now to really address this issue,” she said.

“To me the key is really at a very young age getting kids more introduced to technology and programming and all the different eventual career paths that technology can provide. On a personal note, it’s about getting more girls excited about exploring that career path and telling them they have the capabilities.”

FNTS has funded a Women in Tech Scholarships program that awarded scholarships to Omaha area high school students planning to pursue a college degree in an information technology-related field. FNTS hosted a Women in Tech initiative to inspire young women to consider tech careers.

“A group of our employees identified that as a great way for us to give back and encourage more girls and women in technology,” Whittaker said.

The efforts are making a difference with more women taking CTO and CIO positions. But the percentage of U.S. women in tech still hovers around 27% and the percentage of women CEOs in IT is barely over 5%.

“I think we’re making progress but there’s so much more to be done,” she conceded.

From startup to established

Post-college Whittaker never imagined she would be at the same company for three decades. She feels fortunate to have started in FNTS’s management trainee program.

“It was awesome because by working in different divisions it gave me a very broad understanding of all facets of the bank,” she said. “That’s where I got introduced to FNTS. Something that I loved about FNTS and technology from day one is that it is always evolving and changing and very fast-paced. That to me is what makes it fun because I like to continue to learn, to be challenged.”

Heading a company at the nexus of so much change means watching and anticipating the potential impact.

That’s why security is even more top of mind. According to IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report, in 2023 the average cost of a data breach reached an alltime high at $4.45 million in 2023. To help combat a potential breach, as well as other security challenges, FNTS added new offerings, including SOC-as-aService, Virtual CISO, and Cyber Incident Response Planning.

“Things don’t always pan out the way you planned and you have to make pivots,” Whittaker said. “That’s what creates some of the challenges, and you learn a lot and you improve from those experiences.”

Although far removed now from its startup days, Whittaker appreciates the “tremendous number of lessons learned” during FNTS’s formative journey.

“It goes back to getting the right talent and the right people and having the right culture within the organization,” she said. “Making concerted investments in the culture drives additional success. It’s focusing on where we are the best … what sets us apart.

“Sometimes that can be hard in technology, where there’s always new things coming. We want to evolve our technology and capabilities, but we also don’t want to be distracted and lose focus on where we can really deliver the best results.”

Leading the Charge PERCENTAGE OF WOMAN-OWNED BUSINESSES SOARS

Business growth over the past few years may not be impressive. However, for small business advocacy and support organizations, the number of women starting businesses represents an undeniable bright spot.

Since 2022, over 1,000 women have started businesses, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy. This means that nearly 62,000 woman-owned businesses exist in Nebraska, making up 43.3% of statewide businesses.

Lisa Tedesco, deputy district director at the SBA Nebraska District Office, specializes in federal government contracting programs and small business contracting strategy and regulations.

“Although the pandemic has still slowed growth overall, we are seeing a trend of women starting businesses in Nebraska at a pretty fast rate,” Tedesco said.

The latest U.S. Census data indicates that women’s business ownership grew by around 3% between 2018 and 2019.

“In 2020, SBA implemented Congress’s changes to the Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Federal Contract Program by making it a full certification program,” Tedesco explained. “These changes have made it easier for qualified small businesses to participate in the WOSB Federal Contract program by improving the process and strengthening oversight and ensuring the integrity of the program.”

Its Dynamic Small Business Search profile database for small businesses interested in federal work spans 60 woman-owned businesses that are certified in the program, with another 400-plus such businesses registered, but not certified.

Furthermore, for fiscal year 2023, a reported $66 million in federal contracts were awarded to woman-owned businesses, primarily in construction, facilities support, and manufacturing — representing a yearon-year increase of 30%.

Likewise, the value amount of SBA-guaranteed loans for woman-owned

businesses in Nebraska was also up by 30% between 2022 and 2023, which equates to a quarter of all such loans. Activity in this area reportedly centered on businesses in the food, arts, entertainment, and recreation industries.

“The SBA Nebraska District Office attributes a lot of this growth to the outreach and education of our partner organizations — the GROW Nebraska Women’s Business Center that focuses on urban businesses, the Center for Rural Affairs Women’s Business Center that focuses on rural businesses, the Nebraska Business Development Center and the Nebraska Apex Accelerator,” Tedesco stated. “[The accelerator] helps small businesses that want to do business with the federal government and assists with market strategy and the WOSB certification process.”

For Jillian Garry, A Local Collective (ALC) has proven to be a “wonderful tool” for The Anastasia Co. Garry founded the stationary and home goods business in 2013, following previous work experience in corporate marketing for home décor and restaurant brands.

“We were both small business owners, and early in our businesses we realized that small business ownership on your own is overwhelming and somewhat lonely,” explained Lakin, who owns Little Mango boutique.

The co-founders said they met through Instagram and, early on, would discuss their struggles, and share best practices and events.

“Quickly, we realized many other small business owners felt the same as we did and the idea for A Local Collective came to fruition,” said Dudzinski, owner of Hello Ruby, a mobile boutique.

In addition to networking, education, and events, ALC strives to bring

more awareness of local small businesses in the area. It recently launched an online directory to provide a platform for shoppers this spring.

When it comes to deciding whether or not to leap into business ownership, Garry took a “just do it” approach.

“Action creates clarity,” she said. “Life will always be busy, and it’s easy to want to wait until things settle down or until you have more time.”

She said if you wait, chances are you’ll always be waiting.

“Take small — even tiny steps — towards your goal in the middle of the busy,” Garry continued. “You can always pivot down the road, but taking action now will make the next step more clear.”

Likening the process to a journey that unfolds over time, she said as long as you’re doing something to support your goal, you’re on the right track. She said never lose sight of how “relationships are everything.”

“Prioritize people, provide excellent customer service, and always follow through with what you say you’re going to do,” she said.

Resources for all

When asked about new or priority initiatives, SBA leadership emphasized its focus on the agency’s strategic plan: to further deepen outreach efforts with existing resource partners and to build relationships with new partners as a means of strengthening the small business ecosystem.

“Women business owners are an important source of economic growth and job creation in urban and rural Nebraska,” said District Director Tim Mittan. “By making viable resources available through partnerships, we are helping to create stronger, more resilient businesses. If we support women business owners, we support the entire economy’s growth.”

To specific efforts, Jo Eckert, economic development specialist with the SBA, is spearheading a series of roundtables for women-owned startups and businesses to have open discussions about achieving success, mitigating roadblocks, and best practices.

“[I call] this SWAG — Stellar Women Achieving Greatness,” Eckert said. “Women in business or thinking about starting a business are welcome.

“It strengthens the community by bringing together those who are so focused on working on their business that don’t have the opportunity to collaborate as a community and realize that their neighboring companies are having the same issues they are.”

Eckert also noted how, in a world where everyone is looking down at their phone, it gives participants a chance to look up and see other women facing the same challenges.

With the SBA as a facilitator, women are provided with insight into free resource partners to assist every step of the way, as well as free training opportunities and the framework for SBA loan programs.

Talent Pipelines

SUCCEEDING IN MALE-DOMINATED INDUSTRIES

JULIE  SIGMON DIRECTOR, NEBRASKA WOMEN IN STEM/ OMAHA STEM ECOSYSTEM

Two local organizations are doing their part in building a talent pipeline for girls in fields traditionally dominated by males.

Omaha STEM Ecosystem

Founded in 2016, Omaha STEM Ecosystem is a collaborative partnership between education, government, nonprofit, and business entities to provide science, technology, engineering, and math learning initiatives for students, especially those underrepresented in STEM careers.

Omaha STEM works closely with more than 1,200 organizations to provide events for women and girls in these fields, including UNO’s STEM Trail Center, Nebraska Women in STEM, Intern Nebraska, and more.

Some of these events include ‘Dinner with a Scientist,’ which offers high school students the opportunity to engage with a scientist and learn about their research and potential careers.

There are also science and engineering fairs, panel discussions, and networking opportunities for women professionals and college students.

“At Omaha STEM Ecosystem, our goal is to transform the region into a robust STEM community; to grow the talent pipeline by providing opportunities needed to be successful in learning, scientific thinking, examining potential career paths, and exploring opportunities to extend educational achievement,” said Director Julie Sigmon.

KIMBERLY THOMAS

EPIC for Girls

EPIC for Girls was established in 2017 out of an observed disparity in sports accessibility for girls, especially girls of color in North and South Omaha.

EPIC (Equal Play: Inspiring Confidence) is on a mission to provide access and resources for those girls.

Last year, EPIC provided nearly $300,000 to 23 program partners to provide sports access to girls of color across Omaha. Over 1,800 girls were able to participate in sports such as volleyball, basketball, dance, golf, boxing, cycling, softball, and more.

EPIC for Girls also launched three paid internship programs in basketball officiating, sports marketing, and instruction/coaching.

Kimberly Thomas, executive director for EPIC, said that there are several benefits to sports, and creating a pipeline for girls of color to discover their abilities and advance those skills, can help them in the future.

It’s time to put aside this notion that we need permission to be our best selves.”

“Nebraska is a sports state,” she said. “Nearly 90% of women CEOs participated in sports as a youth/teen. Sports teaches many life skills and prepares children and teens for the workforce and adulthood.

“This approach ensures that students have the opportunity to learn and are more likely to remain in Nebraska, contributing to the state’s future workforce. Additionally, it offers increased opportunities for women and girls in traditionally maledominated industries and promotes greater diversity in STEM fields.”

To make these types of events and opportunities available, Omaha STEM partners with a variety of organizations, such as Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, the University of Nebraska Omaha, Clarkson College, Metropolitan Community College, and the AIM Institute.

Sigmon said there is continued momentum for STEM fields, but it will require hard work to ensure equality for women and girls.

“I look forward to the equal opportunity that will be available,” she said. “While we are seeing a positive increase, there is still a long way to go in terms of achieving equal pay and breaking the glass ceiling.”

KIMBERLY THOMAS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, EPIC FOR GIRLS

“Sports is also a pathway to a better life for many individuals; however, sports opportunities have not been equally distributed across communities, specifically leaving out communities of color. Girls need to see themselves in these positions and this is a great opportunity to create a pipeline of talent and introduce girls of color to careers in sports in a low-threat, highly supportive environment.”

Looking ahead, Thomas said that while women and girls have, and continue to be, restricted from participation in many of the spaces where men have had access for decades, there have been many great strides made.

“It excites me to see how women are finally entering those spaces and making progress, closing the gap, and having a greater financial and social impact than anyone ever expected,” she said. “It’s time to put aside this notion that we [women and girls] need permission to be our best selves.”

When Danielle Eby became a first-time, stay-at-home parent to twins, it wasn’t just overwhelming, but it was also isolating. Leaving the house became a major planning feat and forget about finding a place to meet a friend with two small kids.

Enter her dream of a children’s bookstore, where parking was bountiful and children could be easily entertained with books, games, puzzles and events. In 2022 that dream became a reality when she opened Elleinad Books, Lincoln’s only bookstore dedicated to children.

What caregivers need

Located in just over 1,000 feet of space at 5930 S. 58th Street in Lincoln, the bookstore features hundreds of books for kids up to the age of 12.

“I curate every book that’s in the store,” Eby said. “I don’t carry any licensed character books because you can get those at Target [or other big box retailers]. We only have 800 square feet of retail space.”

Carpet space, as well as child-sized chairs and a table, provide spaces for kids to play games and read books.

Eby said it’s common for caregivers and parents to meet up at the space and talk while kids play together, which was the intended purpose.

“I know there are 1,000 parents and caregivers looking for something to do with their kids, whether it’s too cold, too hot, or too windy outside,” she said. “The zoo might seem like too much, but you also can’t go to Target because you’ve probably already done that twice this week.

“I live that life. I know exactly what these moms and caregivers need.”

Small reminders, big impact

While recognizing a need was easy, learning how to run a business was not.

“I have a business degree in marketing, but did I know anything about opening a business? Absolutely not,” she said.

Eby said she was lucky she knew Stasi Grenfell, owner of Reach Business Consulting and co-owner of Victress MVMT, who told her to rip the Band-Aid off.

“The biggest challenge was not knowing where to even begin,” she said. “A lot of people have dreams and ideas for businesses, but I think a lot of people jump back because they don’t even know where to begin.”

Beyond guidance in the formation process, Eby said having someone to bounce ideas off of and lean on when things get tough is invaluable.

“On days when things are very slow, I can call her and say ‘I need you to talk me off a ledge and tell me I’m not failing,’” she said.

“I forget the bigger picture. One day isn’t going to define the bookstore. [I have to remind myself] that I have slow days, but I also have super busy days.”

Unique events, such as the stuffed animal sleepover party, are the perfect reminders.

“I think we get rid of childhood too fast; kids want to be older, bigger and more independent, but if we can let them be children for as long as possible, we should. Let them believe that their stuffed animals come to life at night,” she said.

Stronger together

Understanding how hard it can be for small, specialized businesses like her own, Eby has developed relationships with local businesses to offer complimentary events.

For example, Connect Pediatric Therapy does two sensory storytimes each month, and Kindermusik of Lincoln does musical storytimes.

“I don’t pay them, they don’t pay me. It’s just a space that they can gather, lead a storytime and we can both get our names out,” she said.

In a similar spirit, she spearheaded the Independent Bookstore Crawl for Lincoln and Seward to help raise awareness and celebrate local bookstores. In the two weeks leading up to Independent Bookstore Day, seven independent bookstores participated: Elleinad Books, A Novel Idea Bookstore, Francie & Finch Bookshop, Indigo Bridge, Badgers Bookshop, Chapters Books & Gifts, and Sower Books.

“We designed a passport and all of our stores were able to do a different promotion,” Eby said. “I did a promotion that if you spend $30 you got $5, some stores offered a free advanced reader copy if you spent a certain amount.”

The event culminated on Independent Bookstore Day when several participating stores held author events. Eby said they plan on continuing the bookstore crawl, which will return at the end of April 2025.

Celebrating two

In June the store will celebrate its second anniversary and will add Sunday hours, a big step for a small store with only two employees.

As a parent of now three small children, finding a balance between business owner and parent is challenging.

“I’m proud of myself for letting it go a little bit,” Eby said. “I can’t be there on Sundays because I’m already there on Saturdays, which

United Way of the Midlands NEW LOCATION, STRATEGIC PLAN PROVIDE EXPANDED SUPPORT

Thus far this year, United Way of the Midlands moved into its new headquarters in Millwork Commons, announced a new strategic plan and has been tasked with assisting victims of tornado damage from the April 26 storm. While the organization has had its plate full, the social services nonprofit has equipped itself for further growth through its new plan, which was announced in the spring.

UWM updates its strategic plan every three years to stay aligned with community needs. Since 2012, the organization shifted from focusing solely on fundraising to operating through a community impact model. Now, this year, the strategic plan includes strategy to mobilize a new generation of philanthropists, engage business leaders and preserve a neutral policy position on legislative interests, among others.

“UWM’s executive committee and senior leadership team developed new strategies to extend UWM’s mission and purpose, and provide actionable work for the years ahead,” said Shawna Forsberg, president and

CEO. “Unlike other organizations, UWM has the power to unite across the nonprofit, business and government sectors to address challenges across the metro.”

Also detailed in the strategic plan is guidance for direct service programs such as Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG Nebraska) and 211, a health and human services hotline.

These programs are now positioned to expand as UWM has moved into its new space in Millwork Commons. Web development company WP Engine sublet the space to the organization and provided an in-kind contribution toward rent and the furniture and technology available in the space. Forsberg also credited Lamson Dugan & Murray, HDR, JE Dunn, Integrated MSP, Renze, E Creative, Interstate Printing and AOI for providing support for the buildout of the space.

“Thanks to a partnership with Google, we have a training space that other nonprofits and partners can leverage for meetings and events,” she said.

Unlike other organizations, UWM has the power to unite across the nonprofit, business and government sectors to address challenges across the metro.

It’s no secret that quick support from the business community has enabled UWM to continue to expand its reach. For businesses looking to get involved in UWM initiatives, Forsberg said they can start by exploring different areas of focus including healthy communities, youth opportunities, financial security and community resiliency.

“Companies can get involved by participating in campaigns, sponsoring events and programs, volunteering and much more,” she said. “We work in partnership with companies to meet their philanthropic objectives and help build engagement with their employees.”

The community relationships built through UWM’s programs, from government, business and individuals alike, were on full display when tornadoes ravaged parts of the metro area. The 211 Helpline assisted in fielding questions following the storm and the organization began to raise funds to provide essentials such as temporary housing, legal support and mental health support.

“To date, we have raised more than $1.2 million — this is testament to our amazing community and to national partners who wanted to lend a hand,” Forsberg said. “In fact, we received funding from 45 states and as far away as France, India and Spain. Also, 100% of all money raised through the Fund will be invested to help those in need of assistance due to the tornadoes.”

The store, located at 8602 West Dodge Road, represents a step forward for both the brand and its footprint in the Omaha area. “Our new store is very close to where the very first Little King store was located when it opened in 1969,” said Chip James, president and CEO of Lockwood Development. “That’s no coincidence. We’re truly inspired by the roots of this historic franchise, and we look forward to carrying that spirit forward to loyal Little King customers, as well as a new generation of Omaha residents.” The 1500-square-foot store combines modern design and an inviting dining area with classic Little King branding and artwork. Customers can expect to order from Little King’s beloved menu featuring subs and sandwiches made with bread baked in store and fresh-sliced meat, as well as soups and desserts, while taking advantage of a variety of conveniences, including a drive-thru. Day to day operations at the 86th and Dodge location, as well as the operation of Lockwood Development’s subsequent stores, will be overseen by Mark Edwards, an Omaha native who grew up in the fast-food business. “It’s an honor to merge the industry I’m passionate about with a brand that means a great deal to me and so many families in Omaha,” said Edwards. “Little King has more than 50 years of rich history in our area, and now we get the opportunity to move it forward, modernize it, and highlight the very best of what it has to offer.” The new store is the first in a series of new locations James, Edwards, and the team at Lockwood Development plan to open in Omaha and Lincoln. About Little King Founded in Omaha in 1969 by Sid Wertheim, Little King Deli & Subs is known for its deli-style sub sandwiches, made with bread baked fresh on site and meat sliced to order. The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal:

1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address.

Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error.

All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information

2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card.

3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday.

4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts.

5. Invoices must be paid prior to publication.
