On the Rise HER COMPANY EMPOWERS, SUPPORTS WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS

In a twist of fate, Andrea Rae discovered that her passion wasn’t flipping properties, or even for her own business, Healing Foods; it was helping other women grow their businesses. It’s why Her Company, the co-op space Rae opened a year ago at 153rd and Q streets, has grown to 40 vendors.

In fact, it was also a twist of fate that Healing Foods came to be. Rae began cooking healthy meals for herself about seven years ago, and after requests from friends and family, she began to build her own business.

“I started taking cooking classes and nutrition classes,” she said. “Then I began servicing some gyms [in Lincoln], and I was delivering to homes in Omaha.”

When she finally needed a larger kitchen to complete orders, she began looking for a space.

“I thought ‘I wonder if other women would want to share this space,’” she said. “I posted it in a women’s group and people came flocking.”

The ‘Pink Store’

Her previous career flipping properties for a Kansas Citybased property management company meant that she didn’t

necessarily have to look for a “move-in ready” place. With her experience, she could take any property with good bones and flip it into her vision.

What was the vision? Girly.

Specifically, baby pink walls with a black and white checkerboard floor.

“I wanted people to remember it,” she said.

She landed on a former Papa Murphy’s location at 15330 Weir St. in Omaha.

“It had pretty much everything I needed, but was dirty and ran down,” Rae said.

She went to work and on December 28, 2022, the co-op opened.

Growing Space

One of the most important decisions prior to opening was deciding on a payment structure for vendors. Rae wanted to ensure a fair and flexible structure that would allow women to grow at their own pace rather than be tethered to a space.

She decided that rent, rather than a contract, would provide enough flexibility for women to test their market and decide if

their product is profitable and scalable.

“If you really believe in yourself and your business, it’s 30 days,” she said.

The drive to put people first almost killed the business before Rae could get started.

“I remember the bank saying I couldn’t get funding because I wasn’t requiring contracts,” Rae said. “They didn’t look at rent as income, but I felt that requiring contracts would change the business plan.”

The rent, set at $500, covers more than just access to the commercial kitchen and display space. It allows Her Company to staff the store, deploy marketing initiatives and provide customer feedback and suggestions.

Charging rent also allows vendors to take a “pause” when needed. For example, someone might be moving, or in the summertime, some women need to, or choose to, spend more time at home with their children.

While Rae encourages women to keep their business consistent for customers, the ebb and flow creates a “revolving door” that brings fresh finds to customers on a regular basis. It’s a model she believes can be replicated. In fact, she already has four bakers signed on for a Kansas City expansion, with staff lined up.

“If I find the space, and I can negotiate it and make it work, then that could start,” she said.

Other markets she’s considering in the near future include Sioux City, Iowa, or Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

“Some places within a three-hour driving distance I could start with and then expand to bigger cities like Chicago,” she said.

Unfortunately, Lincolnites will not be getting their own location but may have a shorter drive as Rae is considering a Gretna location in the near future.

Added Benefit

Part of what makes the concept so replicable is the versatility provided. From home goods to personal care items, to workout gear, to desserts and healthy meals, Her Company has an astounding variety of options. No vendor has product exclusivity, meaning multiple vendors can sell candles or cookies, etc.

“And, it comes from someone with a story,” Rae said. “You could go to Bath & Body Works and get a candle with all the CONTINUED

toxins in it. Or, you could come here and get a really beautiful organic candle and support someone.”

Part of Rae’s job – her favorite part, in fact – is helping vendors gain exposure and grow their businesses.

“I get more excited about other people and their companies than I do about my own,” she said. “We ultimately care about their businesses. Our job is to make them money.”

Rae is quick to note, however, that the line of responsibility is clearly drawn.

“I had to learn that the education part [upfront is important],” she said. “We don’t work for you, you work for you within our space, and then we help you with specific things.”

Specific things like social media exposure and events. Her Company has over 4,000 followers on Instagram and over 7,000 followers on Facebook.

In May, Her Company hosted the second installment of the Summer Festival.

“It gives the women an extra boost in times when we’re not busy,” she said.

In addition to Her Company vendors located in the store, the festival also included 100 other women-owned businesses as well as food trucks and live music.

“If you can’t afford to be in the store, I still want you to be a part of [the community],” Rae said. “It’s only $60, and I’ve accepted every business that applied.”

Vision for Accessibility

Through conversations with women entrepreneurs, Rae learned that a large demographic of women struggle to start and scale a business due to child care expenses.

“Right now most of the women can’t come to a space outside of their home because day care is so expensive,” she said.

Ambitious and compassionate to her core, Rae is in the planning stages of how she can create a space for women entrepreneurs that includes on-site day care. In addition to on-site day care, the space

would have a reception hall for events, rooms for estheticians and hair stylists, and a kitchen for cooking classes. She hopes to open it in about a year.

Again, funding is the biggest obstacle due to the rent structure. “I can’t grow until this location becomes established,” she said. “I could help hundreds of women at such a low price [if I had the space and funding].”

Readers can support Rae’s vision by shopping at Her Company and attending events. The next Summer Festival to showcase women entrepreneurs is Sunday, June 18.

Midlands organizations are not standing still and waiting for others to pick up the torch that ultimately leads to lifting women within their respective businesses, industries and communities.

Thirty-three percent of Jet Linx’s team, for one, is made up of women.

“Given that less than 10% of the pilot population is comprised of women, having 33% of our leadership team make-up be female is something we are quite proud of,” said Vice President of HR Yvette Sumodi. “Jet Linx goes after the best and brightest in the industry. Locally in Omaha, that number climbs to over 40%.”

When asked about the efforts behind such bright spots, Sumodi referred to Jet Linx‘s investment in Omaha‘s Aviation STEM Day (STEMaha) and the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s aviation program.

“Programs like these are instrumental in garnering and cultivating interest from a young age to combat the shortage of pilots already being felt,” she noted. “Specific to women, Jet Linx supports Women in Aviation International as members and sponsors of its conference each year. We also encourage our local base operations to foster partnerships with their local chapters of this important group.”

Industrywide, Sumodi noted special interest groups – such as the NGPA (National Gay Pilots Association) and OBAP (Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals) – among others that she said Jet Linx supports and fosters relationships with to “attract and bring a diverse talent group to the company.”

“Each of our female leaders is active in their community and field

of expertise,” she added. “We recognize the importance of connection and influence outside of the aviation-specific industry groups.”

The ‘Can-do’ Spirit

For more than 42 years, the Institute for Career Advancement Needs (ICAN) has focused its efforts on dialogues and uplifting issues related to the development and advancement of female leaders. This has been accomplished through leadership development programs, services and events.

On the heels of its 30th ICAN Women’s Leadership Conference, in early June President and CEO Aileen Warren stated that the organization has created environments and spaces for authentic and impactful conversations on topics ranging from value-based leadership and quotas on boards to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace, male allyship, and pay gaps and pay audits.

“Recent years have increased the need for ICAN to impact evolving and timely leadership needs within organizations surrounding unconscious bias, digital age leadership,

management of a multi-generational workforce, leading change, and post-pandemic hybrid team management and activation,” she said.

Statistics seem to bear out the considerable need for such discussions and movement on these fronts.

“ … less than 20% of women are in Congress and at the top levels of business,” Warren said. “So, this is a human issue – not women’s issue – and it is critical to continue investing in efforts leading to progress in order for us to truly have a reflective democracy and workplace.”

For the first time in history, Warren said that females make up 10% of CEOs on the Fortune 500 list.

“Ten percent may not seem like a noteworthy statistic, but it represents something so much greater: Where we’re headed,” she explained. “It may not be a leap, but it’s an important step toward having more women in C-Suite leadership.

“The visibility of female leadership is also paramount. It is

important for there to be female role models via being ‘seen and heard’ at the highest levels of leadership for young girls – our next generation of leaders – for them to value their own voices and visions, which could lead to themselves one day as an executive leader.”

Similarly, there is the issue of transparency, as organizations are facing more pressure on this front – especially from the Millennials and Gen Z’ers, according to Warren.

“Transparency helps to build employee trust, feelings of

inclusion and a heathier work culture,” she remarked. “Companies who are willing to not only share more information with employees but also engage them in meaningful and collaborative discussions around critical topics could potentially have a competitive advantage when hiring and retaining talent.”

Furthermore, Warren cited recent ICAN conference research, a poll by VitalSmarts, which revealed that 80% of employees are “avoiding a difficult conversation at work.”

“While at times uncomfortable, critical conversations can

be refreshing and lead to a better understanding of the needs of others, personal leadership growth, and transformational development for teams and organizations,” she said. “At ICAN, we celebrate the deeper awareness, stronger connections and business success that bold conversations, transparency and genuine employee engagement and development can spark.”

Funding Change-Making Research

The Women’s Fund of Omaha relies on and uses available research to inform its policy stance and grant-making efforts. Executive Director Jo Giles referred to its collaboration with UNO’s Center for Public Research.

“We are gathering data right now … related to women and girls across our state and will have a report featuring those research findings available later this year,” she said. “Additionally, we’ll have an update on our 2019 State of Domestic Violence report, also out later this year.”

When asked about research-supported strides and areas for improvement, Giles addressed the good news first.

“Incremental change has been made toward gender equity,

especially as it relates to representation in leadership positions,” she said. “For instance, the Nebraska legislature currently has the most women state senators ever.”

Regarding the lasting effects of the pandemic, Giles referred to how this public health crisis was unlike previous recessions – in that it impacted industries more likely to employ women and less likely to provide paid sick leave and other benefits.

“Also, women have had disproportionate caretaking responsibilities while schools, day cares and senior centers were closed,” she added.

She cited research that suggests women’s employment will not recover to pre-pandemic levels until 2024.

“And even ‘recovering’ to that level means Nebraska women being paid just 78% of what men are paid with an even bigger wage gap for women of color and LGBTQ individuals,” Giles stated.

Pay equity in the workforce remains a persistent, economic opportunity-diminishing challenge for women, especially, Giles said, for those female-led households and households with children aged 18 and younger.

a staggering 4.2 million women across the country leaving the workforce – a full million more than men – setting women’s labor force participation back more than 30 years, in addition to their lifetime earnings potential,” she said.

Best Practices, Inspiring Action

When asked for examples of unique approaches to effectively lift women’s representation and equity, Warren said ICAN’s partnerships address talent pipeline and women’s advancement by providing transformative leadership development experiences.

“[Experiences] not only inspire the individual leader, but develop the skills needed to serve as a more effective and empowering leader for their colleagues – which translates to greater contributions and organization-wide impact,” she explained. “We are proud to have over 1,300 graduates of our Defining Leadership program and engage with around 400 leaders annually in our custom programs, Emergenetics workshops and coaching services.

Additionally, Warren said that ICAN works with organizations

that take a “comprehensive approach” and that invest “recurring resources and frequent development experiences that allow their leaders the freedom of time to dedicate to their own development and career path.”

In turn, they can “make the greatest strides in representation and display their commitment to their leaders’ future growth within the organization.”

She said it is critical for leaders to learn how to work most

effectively and collaboratively with others – honoring the team’s and organization’s authentic and unique thinking, working, living and values.

“It is important to engage all leaders in the process — across roles, leadership levels and demographics — to foster mentorship and sponsorship relationships internally and cultivate allyship for those leaders seeking to advance in the organization,” she said. “Organizations with corporate cultures that value working women and families, in general, will increasingly stand out in the postCOVID workplace.”

Warren said this notion is represented, through the following elements: progressive family leave policies, child care options, pay equity, community engagement, and development and visibility across hybrid workforces.

She encouraged being mindful of what you read, view and hear.

“The narrative of women in the media will become an increasingly important topic, particularly as the mental health of women and girls continues to make headlines,” Warren explained. “We all need to be conscious of what we consume

and support in terms of articles, news, entertainment media, advertising and social media outlets. It not only impacts a woman’s self-perception, but it also impacts how women are viewed.”

Giles of the Women’s Fund of Omaha also encouraged businesses to do more to implement some of the aforementioned policies, such as pay equity and flexible workplaces.

“There is an economic case for all the issues we work on and having the business community stand up and advocate alongside with us will have a bold impact on the work we are doing to advance gender in our state,” she said.

It is only when businesses implement policies like pay equity, when communities are free from gender-based violence, when women are supported in workplaces and community, and when families can be safely housed and fed that gender equity in the state is reached, Giles emphasized.

“And it will take all of us, nonprofits and for-profit organizations, working together to create communities where everyone can reach their full potential,” she said.

ECHO COLLECTIVE UPLIFTS IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE WOMEN

ECHO Collective, which stands for Empowering Communities through Her Opportunities, is connecting immigrant and refugee women with lifechanging opportunities.

The organization was founded in August 2020 by Nebraska native Kelly Ross. Prior to founding the organization, she worked and volunteered for various Lincoln organizations serving the immigrant and refugee population including Southeast Community College, El Centro de las Américas, Lutheran Family Services, and Lincoln Literacy.

After listening to the stories of people that were starting new in America – specifically the Lincoln area – Ross developed a passion for helping these individuals overcome the unique barriers they face. She launched ECHO Collective with a strategic goal in mind: to give refugee and immigrant women the opportunities they need to grow personally and forge cross-cultural relationships while giving them the tools they need to establish a successful business.

“Through working in the community, I became friends with many women who were born outside of the USA and moved here as adults,” Ross explained. “I noticed significant barriers that were prohibiting them from enjoying the same opportunities that I have.

“Their primary barriers to entrepreneurship were English language acquisition, understanding applicable laws and regulations and finding a supportive community. Through our programs, we provide education at an intermediate English level, sometimes using interpreters, to ensure that women can pursue a better life without waiting years to develop an advanced level of English. We present information on following guidelines, rules, and laws in a way that’s easy to understand, and our community is well-known in the area to provide enriching and stable support.”

On average, ECHO Collective serves about 40 entrepreneurs and 35 artisans each year. There are 11 community members

that serve on the board of directors, and in the organization’s first year of operation, it raised $25,000 from individuals who believed in ECHO’s mission. Now, it is about to finish its third fiscal year with a budget of $165,000, which is comprised primarily of individual donors and grants.

program, ECHO Collective selects a cohort of women to attend a four-month intensive business education course and participate in a community-driven learning environment. The team looks specifically for women who are still learning English, own a business, or have an idea for one, and were born outside of the United States. In addition, ECHO offers refined coaching, which is one-on-one personalized business coaching for refugee and immigrant women-owned businesses.

Creative Programs

ECHO Collective provides educational and enrichment opportunities in the textile arts, like sewing, knitting, textile weaving and bead weaving. For example, the Afghan Maker

Circle began in April 2022 through a partnership with the Asian Community and Cultural Center and provides Afghan women a safe and nurturing space to use their existing skills to create items for their new homes in Lincoln. ECHO Collective provides materials and equipment to sew, embroider, weave, knit and crochet.

Another example is ECHO Collective’s launch of a bead weaving class in partnership with the Textiles, Manufacturing & Fashion Design department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr. Claire Nicholas helped create the program and Venn Jemkur provides weaving expertise and continued instruction to its female participants.

Changing the World

It is evident that ECHO Collective is not just transforming Nebraska’s small business landscape, but it’s also helping change the world – one woman at a time.

“We are all looking for somewhere to belong and ways to make meaning out of life,” Ross shared. “Our programs enable selfsufficiency and capability while building a social infrastructure to make space for the refugee and immigrant women who seek our support. ECHO Collective helps them as entrepreneurs and artisans, but we also motivate and inspire better relationships in all other areas of their lives – as wives, mothers, daughters, and friends.”

Looking ahead, the organization is marking its third year of business this August. The team will host a birthday party celebration that’s open to the public, featuring family-friendly activities, a market supported by Refinery entrepreneurs, food trucks, and more.

“ECHO Collective’s strength lies in community building,” Ross said. “After the graduates finish our programs, they continue to play an important role in our community by planning events, mentoring others, and offering peer support. This ensures a tremendous, long-lasting impact by instilling and fostering the feelings of welcome and belonging, which contribute to a happier life and greater sense of well-being.”

The store, located at 8602 West Dodge Road, represents a step forward for both the brand and its footprint in the Omaha area. “Our new store is very close to where the very first Little King store was located when it opened in 1969,” said Chip James, president and CEO of Lockwood Development. “That’s no coincidence. We’re truly inspired by the roots of this historic franchise, and we look forward to carrying that spirit forward to loyal Little King customers, as well as a new generation of Omaha residents.” The 1500-square-foot store combines modern design and an inviting dining area with classic Little King branding and artwork. Customers can expect to order from Little King’s beloved menu featuring subs and sandwiches made with bread baked in store and fresh-sliced meat, as well as soups and desserts, while taking advantage of a variety of conveniences, including a drive-thru. Day to day operations at the 86th and Dodge location, as well as the operation of Lockwood Development’s subsequent stores, will be overseen by Mark Edwards, an Omaha native who grew up in the fast-food business. “It’s an honor to merge the industry I’m passionate about with a brand that means a great deal to me and so many families in Omaha,” said Edwards. “Little King has more than 50 years of rich history in our area, and now we get the opportunity to move it forward, modernize it, and highlight the very best of what it has to offer.” The new store is the first in a series of new locations James, Edwards, and the team at Lockwood Development plan to open in Omaha and Lincoln. The 2023 Legislative Session

The 2023 legislative session wrapped up its 90-day session two days early, ending on June 1. Several pieces of legislation integral to the Lincoln Chamber’s 2023 policy agenda were passed into law, many of which are important to our longterm Vitality Lincoln strategy.

Tax competitiveness has been a top business advocacy objective for the past several sessions. In fact, state elected leaders had made great progress previously at the urging of business advocacy groups on both individual and corporate income tax relief and property tax relief. Additionally, the exemption of social security income from tax has been a central objective of our tax reform agenda.

This year, under the leadership of Governor Jim Pillen, Speaker John Arch, Revenue Committee Chair Lou Ann Linehan, the Revenue Committee members and many other senators, our state leaders found a way to work through ardent opponents of tax cuts to deliver tax relief in a more accelerated fashion to the people of Nebraska. The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce testified in support of LB754 through expert testimony delivered by local CPA and tax expert Brian Klintworth of HBE LLP.

As noted in the Midland’s Voices piece (5-14023) from Lincoln Chamber president and CEO Jason Ball, Nebraska Chamber president Bryan Slone and Omaha Chamber interim president Tim Burke:

“Governor Jim Pillen’s tax plan will put Nebraska on the map of lower-tax states at long last, with a top income tax rate of 3.99%, exemptions for social security and military retirement income, and finally addressing high property tax in a serious way. Passing these bills must be a priority for our legislators. Why? Because the economic future of our state for our children and grandchildren is dependent upon remaining competitive for talent, jobs and economic growth. We still have a way to go before reaching our full growth potential. But think how far we’ll get if we give those extra tax dollars back to Nebraskans. After all, it’s their hard-earned money, and our consistently high revenues show that they have been over-taxed for quite some time.”

Securing funding for a secondary water source for Lincoln and the region was proposed by Senator Eliot Bostar in the original form of LB506. LB506 was introduced with the intent of creating a grant program for the design, construction and implementation of water treatment, transmission and distribution, land acquisition, permitting, water wellfield construction, pumping and transportation of water over 25 miles for the purpose of providing potable water. The proposal, while amended into a state budget bill (LB814), remained true to this original intent and secured

$179.2M in ARPA funds for this purpose.

The Lincoln-region secondary water source proposal was the result of extensive review and study by the Mayor’s Water Source Advisory Council. The final recommendation of the Water Source Advisory Council was to secure a wellfield to draw ground water from the Missouri River. The Lincoln Chamber Board adopted a support position for this recommendation shortly after it was announced, and the secondary water issue was a priority issue of both our 2023 State Policy Agenda and the collaboration meetings we hosted with Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and members of the Lincoln/Lancaster County delegation of state senators. This is an incredibly important issue for the long-term growth and sustainability of our community. It is worth noting that when the Lincoln Chamber testified in support of this legislation in front of the Appropriations Committee, we were speaking on behalf of the Lincoln Chamber, the Lincoln Independent Business Association and the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

State funding assistance for building a downtown Lincoln Convention Center was another key objective driven by the Lincoln Chamber, Visit Lincoln, the Downtown Lincoln Association, Downtown Lincoln Rotary #14 and many other community partners. One of the proposals, seeking a direct appropriation of a total of $71M in state cash reserve funds, was strongly supported by Visit Lincoln Executive Director Jeff Maul and Downtown Lincoln Association President and CEO Todd Ogden, as well as Matt Anderson from the Branched Oak Observatory. Senator Anna Wishart of Lincoln was the driving force and champion behind the state appropriation proposal. A complementary effort championed by Senator Eliot Bostar sought to re-activate and enhance the Convention Center Facility Financing Assistance Act, often referred to as turn-back funding. Turn-back funding, which returns a significant amount of state sales tax revenues derived by sources near the new development, has been successfully utilized by Lincoln and other larger communities to build facilities such as Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Other positive items from this legislative session included language for affordable housing adjacent to qualified census tracts that will facilitate the use of affordable housing funds, language to help bolster our mega-site development strategy, the re-instatement of R&D tax credits, and the Appropriations Committee committing slightly higher state appropriations for the University of Nebraska.

We thank all local and state elected officials for their commitment to growing our great state and our Lincoln Chamber membership for their engagement on policy issues.

WHAT ELSE IS possible?

Welcome, 2023! I love the New Year. New beginnings, new adventures, new possibilities, new choices. A blank canvas for us to perhaps choose something different and create another masterpiece along the journey of our lives.

As I look back over the past 30-plus years I’ve been in the publishing/media business, I realize where I am today is largely because of the choices I have made. Some of them created more ease and more joy in my life and business, and some of them did not.

We are all a work in progress and constantly evolving. There are hundreds, thousands—make that millions—of choices we can make at any given time.

We all are making choices. Every moment in every day there are choices to make. We are choosing what we wear, what we eat, what we do, who we do it with, where we work, how we nurture our bodies or how we don’t. We choose happiness and joy and we also choose sadness and struggle.

What I love about CHOICE is that you always have a CHOICE. If you choose something and it doesn’t work out or you change your mind, you can choose again. When I hear myself saying, “I have no choice,” that is a choice. Gary Douglas, founder of Access Consciousness, encourages us to choose in 10-second increments. There is no right or wrong choice, good or bad choice. There is just CHOICE.

Ask yourself, “If I choose (fill in the blank), what will my life be like in a year, five years, ten years? (Or perhaps, in keeping with the above admonition, in the next 10 seconds?) Will this choice create more in my life or less?”

Only you can answer that question. My life continues to change by asking such questions. What are you choosing in 2023? And remember: If it isn’t working out or feeling light—choose again!

What else is possible (in the next 10 seconds, 10 minutes, months, years?) That begins with your next CHOICE!

What else is possible? ~ ANDEE
