For her part, Watson formerly worked in the federal government (both defense and health and human services). Her pursuit of the project was motivated by the opportunity to “make positive change.” “Food is a basic need that is often taken for granted when you have access and seemingly an abundance,” Watson added. “The global COVID experience has shown the world how quickly commodities can become scarce and basic needs can easily not be met.” In travels abroad and domestically, she has seen the disparities firsthand. “The USDA contract was an opportunity to be a part of shaping the future of the monetization of food commodities, to ensure the integrity of the program remains intact,” she said.
She would go on to parlay her formal corporate finance and accounting education and training into work with several industry groups and disciplines — financial, marketing, purchasing and ops, and in consumer beverage, defense, health care and transportation segments. “I never worried about the title of the job I held,” Watson said. “I was more focused on what I would contribute and what I would learn from each experience.” In 2008, when confronted with relocation yet again, Watson took a leap of faith. “I was not opposed to the move,” she explained. “I had relocated several times before, which is how I arrived in Omaha, but this time I just did not feel a move was right.” Watson followed her instincts, and pursued more of what she loved by founding the consulting firm that bears her name. In the beginning, most of Watson’s clients came from speaking engagements and satisfied customers. Now, she is known within the industry, acquiring notable projects and contracts. Today’s generation of women leaders are a force to be reckoned with. Even amid the pandemic and the incredible upheaval that the economy has experienced in the last few years, women in various industries are doing life-changing work in Nebraska and beyond. Their ability to step into their calling as leaders is admirable and shows that there is nothing holding them back. Aspiring female leaders are seeing this great work and are following in their footsteps.
Accelerating Growth
Today’s business climate is unlike any other. The world is working its way out of a pandemic that temporarily halted business growth for companies around Nebraska, and the world. Businesses both large and small are still grappling with large numbers of people who have exited the workplace for the short or long-term. Yet, despite those challenges, leaders – regardless of gender – have had to rely on some similar core leadership qualities: effective communication, responsibility and the ability to see the big picture. Women are showing that they can bring their full authentic selves to the workplace, and this is part of the recipe Page 8 • June 17, 2022
of accelerating company growth in a distinct way. Nancy Williams, co-founder of No More Empty Pots and advisory board member for GROW Nebraska, said she believes that there are a few key things that female business leaders should rely on in today’s business landscape. “The most important quality for me is trust,” she shared. “Empathy is huge. Love is paramount. Treating people with dignity and respect makes a difference in your relationship with yourself and others. If I cannot trust someone, then it is difficult for me to be vulnerable, share, delegate and work with them. “In my opinion, we cultivate more women leaders by being our whole selves authentically everywhere, where we can see that it is okay to learn from things that are not going as expected, and that we can celebrate our wins and each other’s wins…that we can take up space and that we can hold space for each other.” At the Institute for Career Advancement Needs (ICAN), Amy McLaughlin, vice president of programs and operations, explained that they teach four key qualities that leaders should possess: collaboration, compassion, confidence and creativity. “Leaders who possess [these traits]

for those that have their eyes set on the C-suite of a corporation, it is no secret that it will take hard work and dedication to make it there. In fact, a 2020 Pew Research Center statistic showed that only 7.4% of women hold CEO positions at Fortune 500 companies. But that doesn’t have to hold back anyone with a vision to get there. “My advice for aspiring women leaders is to get engaged and show up,” Kerrigan said. “Be a reliable committee member who attends all meetings. Be a responsive co-worker who completes tasks on time. Be a volunteer who does what she says she is going to do. At the same time, be honest with your limits and commit when you know you can deliver.” McLaughlin encouraged women to be fearless and take ownership of their careers. “Don’t be afraid to move laterally in your career and go after or create stretch assignments that show your range and desire to move ahead,” she explained. “Be sure to get exposure to as many parts of the business as you can, and network both in your community and internally across your organization. “If you have a broad understanding of your company dynamics, along with a deep understanding of yourself and your strengths, the sky is the limit. I had a mentor that always told her staff to take your career in to your own hands – only you can own and create your career trajectory.” Williams speaks from experience as an entrepreneur and dedicated changemaker. “I would say start with being a leader where you are,” she recommended. “Trust yourself. Every person whether working alone, within an organization, on a team or within a community has the opportunity to lead. Take the steps to know for yourself what you love and what you have to offer and the impact that you want to see.

A 2014 Hewlett Packard report pointed out that women only apply for a job if they believe they meet 100% of the qualifications. Men, it stated, would apply for a job even if they only met up to 60% of the qualifications. In 2022, this study is still being cited as an unfortunate fact. Kari Foote, director of leadership development for Leadership Resources, said this might be because women may feel unprepared for the gravity of the job. But she also said, pushing beyond those doubts is important to not only growth within a company, but also individually. “Being ready to put yourself into uncomfortable situations where you’re deliberately stretching beyond what you think you’re capable of can be really important,” she said. Finding the confidence to push those boundaries can come from a variety of experiences, from mentoring to leadership courses.

Since it began in 2010, Women United has raised more than $2.1 million to support school readiness and family development, according to Michelle St. Clair, advisor at Prospective Planning Partners and volunteer chair for Women United. “When we look at the building blocks of a quality life—health, education, and financial stability—we can see how those three things are related,” St. Clair said. “If one of those areas is negatively impacted, so are the other two.” For instance, a big focus for the organization is mental health by addressing behavioral and emotional barriers to learning through the support of school-based therapists at two Lincoln elementary schools. “Together we’re working to identify and address these disadvantages children and their families face to ensure that the children, regardless of their situation, have the opportunity to succeed at school,” St. Clair said.

Some companies may already have leadership programs in place. Some companies may still need to decide if an internal or external leadership program or coaching is necessary. Either way, Foote said it’s important to be your own advocate. “You might be in a situation where your employer isn’t pouring development dollars into you,” she said. “Advocate for your own growth and make sure you’re creating your own opportunities wherever you can. Be involved in your community. Find ways to serve. Build a network of women because sometimes we have to own our own career paths.”
