Modern Vision Centers COLLABORATION FOCUSES ON INNOVATION
Since its launch last month, Modern Vision Centers (MVC) is setting a new standard for vision care for patients in the Omaha area, as well as in Phoenix, Arizona, through a collaborative, patientfocused partnership.
Growing network
Kugler Vision, Modern Vision Solutions, and ilumin now comprise an integrated network that combines clinical excellence with a personalized experience that serves patients of all ages at the highest level, said Lance Kugler, MD, of Kugler Vision.
“The idea is to address visual needs for every patient. The three different centers provide that,” he explained. “Modern Vision Solutions provides family eye care, glasses, contact lenses, pediatric eye care, and myopia control, and they have a Dry Eye Center of Excellence there as well. ilumin is the medical expertise; they deal with primary eye care as well as eye disease and they are experts and specialists in cataract surgery.
“Kugler Vision is the refractive surgery center. We specialize in procedures to reduce the need for glasses and contacts including LASIK, lens implants, SMILE, ICL, and refractive lens exchange. So, we have every aspect of what people need for eye care covered within the system, and yet we can maintain expertise and focus at each of those centers.”

surgeons boast over 150 years of combined clinical experience.
The growing physician-owned MVC network in Nebraska includes Modern Vision Omaha partners Kugler Vision with Drs. Lance Kugler, Drew Dickson, Kelly Kiser, Cassandra Jordan, Dusty McIver, and Mollie Hiatt; and Modern Vision Solutions’ Drs. Meagan Anderson and Sara Petska, also of ilumin; ilumin’s team includes Drs. Dean Arkfeld, Michael Goldstein, Brandon Menke, and Peter Simone.
Carrot LASIK & Eye Center (Drs. Matthew Hammond and Michael Herion) in Mesa, Arizona, is also part of the MVC network.
Modern Vision Solutions’s practice is located at 103rd and Pacific streets. Kugler Vision is located at 17838 Burke St., near Village Pointe. ilumin’s Lakeside office is at 16820 Frances St. and its Regency office is at 450 Regency Parkway. The practices operate independently.

According to Kugler, MVC plans to expand to several more states in the coming months. MVC doctors are committed to matching each patient to the right care at the right time, and to offering thoughtful education on all options at every appointment, ensuring each patient receives the best possible care and understanding of their eye health.

If you think of it as a support system, the net is a lot stronger and a lot wider.
“We have a medical advisory board, which consists of all the doctors. That advisory board is tasked with ensuring that our standards of care are consistent across the organization,” Kugler said. “That allows us to elevate the standard to the highest possible, and we work together to maintain that consistently across the organization.”
Convenience
Individual practices can also refer patients to their trusted MVC peers when needed.
“We can refer patients within our system and know the continuity of care will not be affected. We know the experience that the patient is going to have will be as consistent as possible,” Kugler said. “Patients like that, because they will know what to expect.”
“The medical information is in the same system, so we’re not having to repeat testing [for] a patient; visits are very efficient,” said Brandon Menke, MD. “And we’re able to lean on each other because we have a wider net, a wider support system for each pathology. For example, ilumin and Kugler Vision do not necessarily do a lot of pediatrics, however, Modern Vision Solutions does. If you think of it as a support system, the net is a lot stronger and a lot wider. We’re also able to give patients a better experience, and that also benefits the clinics.”
Existing patients who’ve established a relationship with any of the individual practices within the network will not be inconvenienced by the MVC partnership, Kugler said.
“For a patient that has been with Kugler Vision for years, or ilumin for years, it would be very difficult for them to tell the difference when they come in; the only thing they may notice is that we’re hoping that the experience gets even better,” he explained. “Because the more that we work together, the more we can improve the experience for everybody across the organization.”

Another advantage is that MVC partner practices are owned by physicians — not private equity — and thus prioritize the doctor-patient relationship over corporate interests, Kugler said.
“If you ask patients, they want their physicians to be the ones running the organization. They don’t like the idea of private equity or other business concerns running medical practices,” he said.
“That’s exactly what we did here: create a company that is completely and solely run by physicians to deliver comprehensive care from top to bottom at a scale that previously was only doable from private equity or something like a health care network. So, we’re not that; we’re physician-owned but providing the benefits of a larger system to the patients.”

A decade or two ago, the word sustainability in business would have been relegated to the corporate lingo mulch bucket by many companies.
Today, however, sustainability is a prevalent mindset in many corners of

the community, particularly among businesses and organizations working in the agricultural and food service industries. Driven partially by consumer demand for eco-friendly products and partially by a labor force that values a green workplace, sustainability is a hot topic throughout the Midlands business community.

“Sustainability is trending, it’s cool,” said Shannon Kyler, north programs manager with City Sprouts.
She said she thinks it started with climate change, and it “really doubled down” during COVID-19 when individuals weren’t able to get items, especially food, in the store.
“There’s a lot of conversation on the government level and society level around ‘Hey, we need to make changes in these systems.’ Climate change and then COVID really brought it to the forefront, which is awesome. It’s always been important, but now it’s gotten a little scarier where we’re like, oh, we really gotta band together.”
City Sprouts, a 501(c)(3) charity, contributes to the discussion through programs that teach individuals of all ages how to garden, cook, and preserve food. It works with Omaha-area residents, volunteers, and interns on growing vegetables, flowers, and herbs using environmentally responsible and sustainable gardening techniques for urban farms and communal gardens.
Reintroducing these time-honored skills to an urban audience is both fulfilling and useful in combating food insecurity and bringing neighborhoods together.
“Community building is the thing that ties it all together and kind of happens naturally,” Kyler said. “Whether that be directly with our neighborhoods or volunteers who come in and work here. Yes, they’re doing work, but they’re also learning.
“We try to frame it as service learning, so they’re learning about how to grow the food and how to take care of the soil and identifying weeds and pests and that kind of stuff. Education is throughout everything that we’re doing.”
Learning is key
In addition to directly working in the soil to grow food, the group also shares its expertise with businesses and other organizations through lunch and learns and webinars on how to start and sustain a community garden or similar venture.
We want people to have the experience of picking a fresh strawberry or tomato and understanding the value of that through hands-on experiences.

“We have so many people who come here and volunteers and other folks who are just like, ‘I don’t have a green thumb. Gardening is so complicated. It’s hard,’” she said. “We try to show them how easy it is to just get out there and do it, starting small. Another organization seeking to expand gardening is No More Empty Pots. The group not only addresses urban farming but also extends the sustainability message to entrepreneurs and existing companies seeking to operate more sustainably.
“Sustainability is often viewed in two ways. It’s either from an environmental perspective of sustainability, what people think of as ecofriendly, and then there’s sustainability on the other side, which is strategic. How do I make something last for a long time without wearing it down or overusing it?” said Talia McGill, president and CEO. “We practice both things, often in doing nonprofit work or even helping startup businesses.”

It’s one of those rare instances where doing good for the planet is also good for business.

McGill said one underappreciated element of sustainability is the potential to help businesses or nonprofits in an operational sense, defined as strategies for lowering overhead or extending the reach of services.
“I’ll give an example of why we use volunteers,” she said. “As a nonprofit, we started very lean and grassroots. When I got here seven years ago, there were maybe five people on staff. There are 30 now and that’s still not enough to do what we do.
“So, volunteers not only help us from a financial bottom-line standpoint, but they also offer us the opportunity to build relationships and educate not only about what we are doing but problems we’re solving in the community. By incorporating volunteers, we’ve now created five to seven more touchpoints for us to open new doors or speak to more people.”
Embrace change
Deploying sustainable practices — whether in the environment or in the workplace — are often subject to choppy waters. McGill said while there are resources to assist with virtually any challenge a company encounters, learning about them is often a steep challenge.
“If I had to name a challenge, it’s silos of information and skills,” she said. “There’s a lot of organizations, businesses, and individuals out there who are doing something CONTINUED
meaningful and impactful, but oftentimes others don’t know about it or there’s not a good network to understand where the people or the resources are.
“I think one of our biggest challenges, and I think a lot of people are noticing this now, is networking and leveraging other people’s strengths. We all have some of the same problems, we just don’t know it.”
Plain old fear of change is another substantial hurdle for many organizations.
Brent Crampton, director of partnerships for Hillside Solutions, said many firms don’t even attempt to explore sustainability practices due to the size of the task and the many challenges that exist.
“The hardest part is just getting over the mental barrier that change is hard. We’ve partnered with enough organizations to know what to do and what to avoid,” he said.
Hillside Solutions established itself with an innovative approach to landfills, departing from the conventional, profitable yet unsustainable trash collection model.
“In addition to getting paid to transport material, most trash hauling companies double their income sources by owning a landfill and collecting tip charges, which are the fees people or companies pay to drop off material,” he said. “Here’s the problem with that business model — once you own a landfill, you’re economically incentivized to landfill more material.
“We started composting with businesses in 2017 whereby instead of opening our own landfill, we started the Omaha area’s first industrial composting facility, Soil Dynamics, which means we’re incentivized to compost instead of landfill.”
The strategy was not only novel but well-timed. As market demand for composting and recycling grew exponentially, Hillside Solutions became a very attractive alternative to other trash-hauling options in the market area. Crampton described the outcome of the gambit as the ultimate win-win.
“Climate change is an existential threat. Businesses used to skip over green practices because it can cost more money. But as we’ve seen with the effects of climate change, doing nothing is becoming far more expensive,” he said.
“We’re seeing new businesses join the movement every day in Omaha because boards, employees, and customers demand it. As in our case, it’s one of those rare instances where doing good for the planet is also good for business.”

DO SPACE CREATES FILAMENT RECYCLING COLLABORATIVE
With the use of 3D printers more and more common, even in homes, Do Space has come up with a solution to keep scraps from filament, the plastic material used for printing, out of landfills.
The nonprofit technology library, currently located in the Omaha Public Library’s Milton R. Abrahams Branch, recently initiated its Filament Recycling Collaborative, partnering with organizations including Metropolitan Community College, Nebraska Innovation Studio, Made New Makerspace, Omaha Maker Group, Makeshift and Kiewit Luminarium.
To start the program, Do Space and Kiewit Luminarium contributed a total of 20 pounds of filament.
“At Do Space, we recognize the importance of sustainability in technology and innovation. By establishing the Filament Recycling Collaborative, we’re not only diverting waste from landfills but also building a culture of environmental responsibility within our community,” said Michael Sauers, technology manager at Do Space, in a press release.

PUSHING SUSTAINABILITY
U.S. GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL
Since 1994, a driving force behind sustainable building practices has been LEED certification. Standing for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, this standard has been utilized in 197,000 projects worldwide. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, the rating system helps guide architecture, engineering and construction firms to achieve more sustainable building projects and green status such as LEED.
For A/E/C firms looking to build to these standards, or individuals looking to be credentialed in green practices, USGBC is a nationally recognized hub for green building. Locally, the USGBC Nebraska Flatwater Chapter brings together individuals in the industry for networking events and educational opportunities. On a corporate level, many Nebraska companies are members of the national organization.
“Many of our members have a LEED Green Associate credential or they have a LEED Advanced Professional (AP) credential,” said Julie Peterson, director, marketing transformation & development.
USGBC provides education both in-person and via webinars to help professionals obtain credentials. A Market Leadership Advisory Board gives input from leaders in each market to the national organization and builds local programming and advocacy for the organization.
One of the most recent buildings to receive LEED certification in Nebraska, Kiewit Hall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln received Gold certification for its HVAC and mechanical systems. Peterson said members tour projects like Kiewit Hall to see how the building achieved its credits and get insight into the challenges associated with achieving the certification.

Off 18th and Dodge streets sits one of Omaha’s most iconic structures. Some call it “The Flying Saucer” and some call it “The Cupcake.” For those who work at Astute Coffee, formerly The Bike Union, it has another name: home, or safe space.
The coffee shop hires individuals impacted by unforgivable systems, such as foster care, providing them with a paid job and life skills programming, from financial literacy to nutrition and cooking. Along the way they build relationships with mentors and other participants, many experiencing a support system for the first time.
Breaking the mold
Miah Sommer, executive director, had spent time working with similar populations while managing a TREK location in Omaha. While he loved teaching individuals how to troubleshoot and repair bikes, it was
disheartening that the emphasis was on profit, rather than the individual’s development.
“That makes sense; that’s how you run a successful business,” he said.
A nonprofit social enterprise, however, would eliminate those limitations.
“Then you have funders who understand that we’re not going to be selfsupporting because we’re running the business the ‘wrong way,’” he said.
“We’re hiring the wrong people and we’re hiring more people than we need.
It’s top heavy.”
In 2014 The Bike Union was opened, billing itself as a social enterprise.
In another example of “doing things the wrong way,” it was a mere coincidence that a coffee bar was added. Sommer admits to buying the remnants of a coffee shop on a whim, but it’s a whim that changed the trajectory of the organization.
Coffee is commonplace in most communities, ensuring that individuals can move and still find work. Additionally, it provides participants an

opportunity to learn interpersonal communication skills, register skills, and basic work ethics, like showing up on time.
“Those skills can be transferred to any job, not just in the coffee industry,” said Tavionna Freemont, program manager and shift supervisor. Freemont frequented the coffee shop when she was attending nearby Central High School, even volunteering there per her senior requirements. She would eventually go through the programming before becoming a fulltime team member.
Making room for change
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, the demand for bike repairs went through the roof as Omahans grappled with ways to leave their house and exercise safely. The demand for bike repairs began to outweigh the demand for coffee, reducing the frequency of interpersonal communication for participants.
“We were in a situation where we were going to need to hire multiple fulltime people who had nothing to do with the programming. That didn’t make sense; it wasn’t mission-focused,” Sommer said.
In August 2022, the bike program was retired and the coffee shop was renamed Astute Coffee. The switch allowed them to open a second location in 2023 at The Atlas near Creighton University.
The second location offers participants another level of responsibility and ownership.
“People want to be held responsible,” Freemont said.
“We don’t do charity and we don’t do pity,” Sommer said. “You come here, and you work on yourself. Everybody gets out of it what they put into it, and we’re here to support it.”
Familial support
The cornerstone of the program, and what’s at least partially responsible for the positive outcomes, is the staff’s ability to create meaningful connections with participants.
“It has to be familial … you’re going to have to be vulnerable and cross lines,” Sommer said. “I think there’s a certain vulnerability to just say ‘I trust you, and I trust this is a safe space to work on myself.’”
Josey Tiemeyer, a program graduate and current full-time team member, said she was shocked by the level of care staff gave her while she was in the program. Tiemeyer, who recently celebrated two years sober, relapsed twice while participating in the program.
“These guys were calling my Oxford House, my family, and friends, trying to figure out where I was … it wasn’t like I was just their employee, I was someone they cared about.
“I will never be able to thank them enough for giving me the chance to come back. I felt guilty. I felt shameful and insecure. I felt like a dog with my tail between my legs. It was really uncomfortable to learn how to take the grace and compliments and believe that I was forgiven and that I am worth it.”

and moved into her first apartment. Her relationship with Freemont, whose nickname is Tursh, has helped her understand healthy relationships.
“Tursh has an amazing fiancé and she talks about their healthy discussions around realizations and the goals they have together,” Tiemeyer said. “I’ve never seen that before; all I’ve had is violence and abuse. It’s really cool to see what it should look like and what’s right and wrong.”
Tiemeyer also said Freemont has helped “lead us through difficult conversations.”
“I’ve struggled with that,” she said. “Tursh is the definition of ‘do it scared.’”
Freemont, for her part, is incredibly proud of Tiemeyer’s growth, saying that she’s become a leader and mentor for other participants.
Showing up
To make this program successful, Sommer said the organization partners with other nonprofits like Youth Emergency Services, Micah House, the Women’s Center for Advancement, Rescue AIDS Project, Mentor Nebraska, and CASA.
RISE Reentry Program also hosts its Friday Rise and Shine event at Astute Coffee, bringing in new individuals and introducing them to the mission.
And that exposure is what’s critical to the organization’s success, and the best way to fuel it.
“There’s a donation button on our page, and we always want people to do that,” Sommer said. “Really greater than that is we would like people to just come in, buy a coffee, and talk to staff.”
Astute Coffee offers teas, smoothies, and a variety of coffee options.
“We just started pour-over tastings,” Sommer said. “We had a few sessions of about eight people come in and we did a little pour-over where we offered some specialty coffees that are on our menu and even some offthe-menu stuff.
“It gets people excited about coffee trying new things and coming back to support us.” CONTINUED

A: Fibrenew is a business where we restore and repair plastic, leather and vinyl.
Q: Why did you choose this franchise?
A: I chose Fibrenew because of the versatility that it has in every market. I don’t want to say it’s recession-proof, because I don’t think anything is, but it’s definitely recession-resilient. A: Meeting with an incredible, knowledgeable broker like Blake Martin with FranNet. It wasn’t all just about dollars and cents. It was really about what I wanted to accomplish with my time and in my lifetime.
Q: What challenges have you faced?
A: Just making people aware that this is an option. A lot of people don’t realize it. More often than not, they tell me they wish they knew about our service. So that’s probably the biggest hurdle.
Q: What have been your biggest wins?
A: One thing that I really like about this company is that we save things from landfills. So, every time we’re able to restore a couch, a chair, a seat in a car, or door panel in a car, not only does it save the user money, but it also saves it from hitting a landfill. Q: How have you grown?

HOW A LEARNING EXPERIENCE LED TO GROWTH

Despite his beginnings as a mechanical engineer, Pat Moran became increasingly interested in owning a business of his own. That’s why in 2019 when his friend introduced him to Lincoln Coin & Bullion, which was put up for sale by previous owners Scott and Deb Olson, Moran jumped at the opportunity to purchase it.
Lincoln Coin & Bullion is a precious metal bullion dealer that works with those both buying and selling three to seven figures of gold, silver, platinum, and other precious metals. The company also provides quotes and appraisals for historic currency collections.
Coming from an engineering background, the coin and bullion industry was new territory for Moran before stepping into the role of owner.
“I didn’t know anything about it. I really didn’t,” Moran said. “I’m not a coin person. I didn’t know that many people did this.”
From transition to growth
Although there were some learning curves with transitioning into a business owner role and figuring out the coin and bullion market, Moran said he has been able to almost triple the volume of business from what it was when he started.

the website as far as what we actually have and then bigger listings,” Moran said. “So, instead of buying one ounce of silver or one ounce of gold, you can buy a 20-ounce listing of gold. I mean, you still could have done it, but it’s the fact that we show that ‘hey, you can buy it.’”
This, he said, helps show people the value of the coin and bullion business.
“Overall, it’s been kind of showing that we’re not messing around as far as we’re not just an on-call coin shop type of thing,” Moran said. “And I think that of course has been well-received.”
Another factor that helped Moran grow as a business owner was becoming a member of Entrepreneurs’ Organization Nebraska. He said EO events have allowed him to learn from more experienced business owners.
“A lot of these guys started on their own, and I’m one of the few that purchased a business with not much experience. And so, a lot of them have way more experience so there’s a lot for me to learn,” Moran said.
Moran said that there were many aspects of owning a business that he wasn’t aware of, so it’s been helpful to have the support of the EO through various challenges.
“It’s almost an entirely different mindset as far as working for someone versus owning a business,” Moran said. “And so, that group of folks, it’s people that are all on the same boat so to speak.”

A year ago, I was studying politics in Illinois. I had an epiphany and decided to change my major. This scholarship helped make it possible to afford changing schools and moving across the country for the second time.
