What was your first job? My first job was at the Osmond Municipal Swimming Pool as a lifeguard.

Looking back on my experience as a guard, I acquired some great skills that I still use today such as being attentive in a distracting environment, willingness to take initiative and being able to reinforce the rules as necessary.

Who or what inspires you in your career? My mom. She is a hard-working, caring, compassionate person, who always puts the needs of others above her own. My mom also had a long, successful career (38 years) in banking. When I was little, I remember watching her come home from the bank, dressed in her fancy suits and high heeled shoes and thinking that I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. Looking back, I now recognize that my mom overcame challenges during her career, yet she always found the joy in her work.

What career advice would you give to your younger self? To believe in yourself, cut out negative self-talk and remain optimistic during challenging times. No matter how troublesome life can become, you are in control of your emotions, decisions, and destiny.

What is your management philosophy? To take chances on people. And never forget those who took chances on you.

How do you define success personally? At this stage in my life, success means being happy and satisfied with the accomplishments that I have achieved to date.

What do you find appealing about your job?

Banking is a multifaceted industry that can provide a variety of opportunities, as well as the possibility of career progression and personal growth — elements I sought in a career when returning to the workforce after being a stay at home mom for a few years. In addition to finding a career that I find rewarding, my role allows me to meet a variety

What do you feel passionate about beyond your work? The wellbeing of my children now and looking forward. As a parent, I strive to provide a loving and secure environment with expectations and responsibilities that will hopefully give them the confidence to make sound decisions as they navigate each stage of their life.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? My favorite way to spend the day off is being at home with my family hanging out poolside or taking a ski trip to the mountains.

What are you currently working on? Mindfulness and meditation. I want to be more mindful and attentive to what is happening right now and to be present in every moment especially those moments with my family and friends.

hospitality PERSONIFIED CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF THE LATE GREG CUTCHALL By the time Greg Cutchall was inducted into the Omaha Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2018 and named Omaha Restaurant Association’s Restaurateur of the Year in 2019, he had opened more than 120 restaurants and franchises since entering the sector as a Kentucky Fried Chicken manager in the 1970s.

Cutchall Management Co., which he founded in 1989, currently owns and operates 44 restaurants in five states including JAMS American Grill, First Watch Daytime Cafe, Paradise Bakery, River City Star/Dam Bar & Grill, Mouth of the South and more. Cutchall and his wife, Molly, also co-founded the Omaha Design Center.

By all counts, Cutchall was an extraordinary businessman. As they reflected on his life and legacy since his death from cancer on May 16 at the age of 69, his friends and family said Cutchall was also a remarkable person.

“He truly had a life well lived, and a life completed. Every day that he was on this earth, he made a difference… he was truly an American success story,” Cutchall’s brother, Michael Cutchall, said.

“He had an amazing capacity to honor and develop friendships. You might

have five close friends; Greg had 50 close friends. He [was] as close to his 50 as I am to my five, and the relationships he developed with each one of those people [was] different.”

“From the day I met him he was polite, kind and energetic,” John Hoich of Hoich Enterprises said. “Greg was always humble to me, treated me with integrity, always made me feel an equal.”

Hoich and Cutchall met in 1978. Hoich did residential and commercial landscaping work for Cutchall over the years, but the two men formed a lasting friendship early on.

“I will never forget the memories of the last few years he’s come to my home on Timber Shores Lake in Valley; we would fish together often,” he said.

“You couldn’t meet a more optimistic guy,” Rob Denning said. “Always a big smile. Always welcoming.”

Denning and Cutchall met over 20 years ago, Denning said. A few years later he invited Cutchall to speak to his team at the bank he was working for at the time.

He really thought about people and he cared so much. He’d build a staff and he’d build a company and he’d build a culture.

“He talked about never giving up, and walked through his story,” Denning said. “He talked about the fact that you have to keep pushing forward and keep envisioning something and modifying it and making it happen. It was almost like he expected obstacles… he talked about, basically, the will to keep going.”

Dan Williams, who described Cutchall as a friend, business partner and mentor, agreed that Cutchall had a notable tenacity, a “positive outlook on life and ‘never say quit’ attitude” that served him well both personally and professionally.

“Greg always had a ‘can do’ attitude with every venture he had,” Williams said. “In business there are many obstacles, but he always seemed to find a way to overcome them. He never looked at a restaurant that did not work as a failure, but just one concept that did not work.”

Restaurant entrepreneur Willy Theisen had a relationship with Cutchall that spanned both business and friendship.

“I don’t know the exact moment we met, but our paths crossed and it’s been 45 years,” Theisen said. “He cared. He made a difference. He created opportunities for an enormous amount of people. And he was quite an example.”

“He seemed like he was always on the right side,” Theisen continued. “Not afraid to put up a fight and challenge, but always on the team that was doing the right things. Hiring the right people, promoting them, making them part of the team, identifying them. He was a true leader.”

Fellow restaurateur Darren Taylor said he and Cutchall became friends in the late 1970s through their work in the industry.

“In 1986, Rigel Corp and Greg put together a buyout of the Omaha-area KFCs from his uncle, Bob Cutchall. Greg and I worked out of the same Rigel Office for three years until he left Rigel and began to open restaurants on his own. We continued to be friends and I’d see him at restaurant functions and media events. Numerous happy hours, too,” Taylor said.

“Greg loved to do ‘deals;’ he never met a deal he didn’t try to put together.

He was the ultimate media-savvy guy; he loved to promote and be involved in events and charities. You knew where he was coming from, he loved to talk business and he’d lay everything out on the table on how he felt things should get done. We were competitors, but that never got in the way of our relationship. We both had houses in Scottsdale and would get together there numerous times. We also went to many restaurant conferences together.”

Rod Kestel was in the advertising business when he first connected with Cutchall professionally, and a friendship soon followed. Years later, he said he had never heard Cutchall lose his temper or even raise his voice and that Cutchall was respectful to the people who worked for him.

“He was calm as could be,” Kestel said. “He didn’t have much turnover among his managers.”

Hoich agreed.

“I appreciated always how he treated his employees as peers,” he said.

“He never spoke of them as employees, he spoke to them as the team.”

“He really thought about people, and he cared so much,” Theisen said.

“He’d build a staff and he’d build a company and he’d build a culture.”

Relentless resilience

Cutchall gave generously to local nonprofits. On a personal level, Cutchall was also a “very caring and loving person,” Kestel said, and served as a source of support when he lost his wife to cancer 11 years ago. “He was right there for me. He cared about my family.”

Michael Cutchall said he remembers his brother’s “relentless resilience and passion for life.”

“It probably started with our parents. Our father instilled the belief in us that all things were possible and our mother would express to us that to have a successful path forward, it required knowledge and fearlessness. I think that was the foundation that Greg built upon,” he said. “The thought was, if we had a good idea and worked hard enough—and not that that’s always easy—we could find a way to make that happen. And certainly he proved that throughout his entire life.”

Michael (two years older) and Greg Cutchall had another brother and a sister, but the two were especially close growing up.

“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, or Maverick and Goose,” Michael Cutchall said. “We were just buddies. We grew and experienced life together.”

The brothers, whose parents divorced when they were young, spent most of the year with their mother in Tucson, Arizona. They spent summers in Nebraska. There, Greg Cutchall discovered both his love for the restaurant business and his knack for entrepreneurship.

“Our dad and uncles owned the A & W Root Beer drive-ins in Omaha in the ‘50s. We started working every day in the summer; probably from the time Greg was 7 he was working daily inside the drive-in,” Michael Cutchall said. “When he was 8, he and I went into the popcorn business.

We leased a popcorn machine from our father and then we’d buy our popcorn and oil and cook our popcorn and then we’d go around to the cars in the parking lot and sell them popcorn. So entrepreneurially, Greg started when he was 8 years old.”

The brothers ultimately went in different directions professionally (Michael is in the media business), but talked regularly, often frankly discussing business.

“I think that was something we both valued,” Michael Cutchall said. “[Siblings] know everything about you from your whole life, so you can’t slide by on those things. We were equal in providing accountability as well as supporting in challenging times.”

Both Theisen and Denning said Greg Cutchall was known for attending to several things at once.

“He was a guy who could get the job done; what a multitasker!”

Theisen said.

“He was constantly doing two or three things,” Denning said. “But I

couldn’t cite an instance when he didn’t greet people with a big smile.”

He was also a lot of fun, his friends said, or as Denning put it, “everyone will have their Greg story.”

Theisen has many, from the Nebraska Cornhuskers tailgate parties with abundant food and drink to fishing trips and motorcycle expeditions.

About a year ago, Cutchall was standing on a dock when he pulled out a new set of wireless earbuds. Theisen cautioned his friend that the earbuds could be easily lost. Cutchall put them in his ears, anyway, telling Theisen, “you worry too much.” Then he cast his fishing rod.

“The right earbud comes flying out of his ear, bounces two times off two different boards and ‘boink!’ right in the water. He looks at me and says, ‘don’t even say anything’ and he called me a name,” Theisen said, chuckling at the memory.

Amazingly, Kestel, who was with them at the time, found the earbud underwater. Cutchall’s response was nonchalant: ‘still works.’

“That was our guy!” Theisen said.

Several of Cutchall’s friends mentioned his perpetual tardiness.

On one years-ago flight, Theisen recalled anxiously awaiting Cutchall to join him as the flight was getting ready to depart.

“He comes running down the ramp, he has all this paperwork and a laptop,” Theisen said. “I say, ‘you have got to be kidding.’ He says, ‘Willy, you want to drink coffee with the pilots.’ I said, ‘No, I get here at the proper time, okay?’”

The two men had a good laugh, Theisen said.

Denning said Cutchall was usually undaunted by challenges. One of his favorite ‘Greg stories’ is from the early 2000s when he and Greg Cutchall decided they would ride motorcycles back to Omaha from Arizona.

When they arrived in Arizona, Greg Cutchall discovered he had forgotten the keys to his condominium, so he hoisted Denning onto his shoulders to get into an unlocked second-story window. The car at the site had a dead battery. One of the motorcycles had a flat tire.

“All of those things that happened? He didn’t care. We just kept on and had a great time,” Denning said. “Those curveballs, whether they were business or personal, I think he looked at them with a different perspective than all of us.”

“He didn’t complain. He was hurting. Sami Edens said that when it comes to sustainability “there’s no effort too small to make a difference.”

In essence, that is what individuals and companies (large and small) are beginning to take sight of.

Edens, who works for Bluestem Solutions as its marketing manager, said for individuals it can be as simple as leaving a small section of your grass unmown.

“For companies, planting native grasses and flowers on your property is a great first step,” she said.

But what else is possible? How can companies and individuals make changes, both large and small, in the name of sustainability?

When you think about sustainability, you might think about solar energy. As a renewable resource that relies solely on the sun, it’s one of the more accessible options for alternative energy.

It’s so accessible that a National Renewable Energy Laboratory (2016) stated there are “over 8 billion square meters of rooftops on which solar panels could be installed in the U.S.” That may be why in December of 2019 when OPPD launched its Community Solar Program, its available shares sold out in just 49 days.

“There are currently 889 households in OPPD’s service territory who are taking part in the program,” said OPPD Media Specialist Jodi Baker.

“Interest in the program has remained high, so we began a waitlist for customers interested in signing on in the event we expand our community solar offerings.”

OPPD, which is currently focused on its Power with a Purpose project to add 600 megawatts of utility-scale solar and natural gas generation, has not had the opportunity to expand the community solar program yet.

In the meantime, Baker encouraged residents and business owners to consider a customer-owned generation system.

“The utility industry is seeing price challenges across all resources given challenges such as inflation, supply chain and global events,” she said.

“Solar continues to provide benefits for customers as an on-peak energy resource.

Interested parties can start by going to OPPD.com/cog, where they can use the solar calculator to help gauge the investment and payoff. OPPD also has a list of “Solar Trade Allies” that are located across the state who are verified and certified to do the installation of a solar system.

“We strongly recommend searching solar businesses and getting multiple bids,” Baker said.

Countering Costs

Clean energy, such as solar produced at Bluestem’s solar farm in Burt County, is still harmful to the environment because it reduces the surrounding natural ecosystem and habitat, Offsetting those impacts in ways that also improve the environment is both important and easy.

For example, Bluestem worked with Conservation Blueprint in 2021 to create seed mixes of over a dozen native plants that were planted at the Burt County solar farm.

“We chose pollinator-friendly plants because they benefit local bees and improve soil quality, retention of nutrients and water quality,” Edens said.

The plants —such as clover, yarrow, coneflower and black-eyed Susans — will, in turn, help capture the excess carbon.

“The more carbon we can pull out of the atmosphere with plants, the bigger impact we can make on climate change,” she said.

She encouraged residents who have either commercial or personal properties to consider native plants and flowers when landscaping. A simple Google-search of native plants in your area can turn up resources or businesses specializing in native plants.

If you are a member of the Omaha Public Library, the Common Soil Seed Library is also an excellent place to find resources and local seeds at no cost.

Involving Employees

Additionally, Bluestem is providing opportunities for its employees to be involved in communities through organizations dedicated to protecting the local environment.

“For Bluestem team-building this fall, the Bluestem team will be planting trees with Keep Omaha Beautiful, which will benefit the local environment over the long term,” she said.

Also partnering with Keep Omaha Beautiful, Mulhall’s’ brand-new Employee Resource Group (ERG) worked

with the organization to clean the nearby park, hoping that it will in turn reduce waste in the neighboring creek.

The ERG, called SEEDS — Seriously Eco-Conscious Employees Driving Sustainability — had its first event in September and has since grown to around 20 members. All events are open for SEEDS friends and family.

“The ERG matters to me because it serves as a reminder of the real reason I do what I do,” said Sheldon Garcia, head of Mulhall’s Farms. “I’m in a position where I’m thinking a lot about things like labor efficiency, employee engagement and business financials on a daily basis, but SEEDS ERG is a great reminder of the big picture.”

The ERG has also taken a trip to see the Sandhill Cranes in central Nebraska and hosted a beer tasting/weeding party at its native wildflower garden. Its next event will focus on installing a new native planting at the entrance of the garden store, while enjoying farm-to-table ice cream from Coneflower Creamery.

“We’ve also learned more about how to recycle, then we share that knowledge with customers during an event at our store,” said Carly Rozeboom, Mulhall’s merchandising specialist.

Involving Customers

Mulhall’s has taken their commitment to land stewardship a step further by making recycling and composting easier for employees and customers.

Since October of 2020, Mulhall’s has been a recycling drop-off site for the city of Omaha. In March of 2021 it added mixed recycling. It also hosts a drop-off site for Hillside Solutions’ compost club.

“Communication and education have been the focus of our team at Mulhall’s,” said Mark Perley, head of Garden + Home. “There are many community members that want to do the right thing with their waste but just don’t know where to go with it.”

For companies in the construction field, reducing waste is even more complex and often unavoidable due to the nature of the job.

Take for example a study done by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that estimates nearly 600 million tons of construction and demolition debris were generated in 2018. That’s roughly double the amount of municipal waste generated by individuals.

But Boyd Jones representatives said a large portion of those materials can be recycled or repurposed. It launched a program in January to divert waste from the landfill.

By utilizing clearly marked, individual receptacles for recyclable materials (carpet, wood, aggregate, paint, metal, wallboard, plastic, etc.) and waste, Boyd Jones is limiting what’s sent to the landfill.

The program is currently active at 15 job sites and will be considered for new projects moving forward.

“This program allows us to continue to demonstrate our values of stewardship and continuous improvement on job sites,” said Jared Jensen, Boyd Jones director of field operations and safety.

“At the same time, we’re taking a more active role in diverting construction and demolition waste from landfills. In collaboration with subcontractors, we can create a better work environment while helping preserve our natural environment for a more sustainable future.”

LAU FINANCIAL GROUP TAKES COMMUNITY FOCUS When H.P. Lau moved to Lincoln, he had a box of lemons and a dream to make something of himself. Lau said that while he and Kreitman are running the show, there is a larger team in the backend offered through LPL Financial, which includes assistance in other daily operational areas like marketing, accounting, technology, as well long-term business management.

Currently, Lau Financial Group serves approximately $750 million in advisory, brokerage and retirement plan assets.

“We’re a small team of two and are fully focused on our core expertise and offerings,” he said. “However, we have the added layer of support from LPL Financial, which gives us robust support, yet the freedom to build the practice on our own terms.”

When asked what makes Lau Financial Group stand apart, Lau said it is simple: its history.

Both of Petersen’s children are involved in the business. Son Drew is director of strategic relationship and runs the Omaha district. Daughter Ashley is a senior account manager for health care clients.

CHAMBER PARTNERS WITH THE BUSINESS ETHICS ALLIANCE In 2020, the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce launched new workforce development initiatives starting with a collaboration of human resources managers conducting focus groups to determine the top workforce challenges of the community. High employee turnover was identified as one of our workforce development priorities.

With this in mind, the CB Chamber partnered with Business Ethics Alliance (BEA) to develop professional development opportunities for local leaders.

“According to Gallup, 75% of employees leave their jobs due to leadership or the lack thereof” says Alicia Frieze, workforce development director for the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce. “This was a driving force for the CB Chamber when developing our professional development opportunities.”

The Value-Based Leader is a focused on being an ethical leader, building exceptional teams, setting visions and goals for teams, and maximizing productivity.

Next Level Leadership focuses on the tenants of the 5-Levels of Leadership. Participants work to: • Understand the different levels of leadership and influence • Identify what their influence may be with each person they lead • How to increase their individual influence During this workshop, leaders are provided an opportunity to create an actual leadership development plan for their organization.

Since 2020, the CB Chamber has successfully conducted five professional development workshops with BEA, each with an average attendance of 30 community leaders. After each workshop a brief survey is delivered with the following two questions: 1. Has the workshop better prepared you to be a better leader?

2. Do you believe others within your organization would benefit from the workshop experience?

These surveys each had an astonishing 100% response rate of YES! The Legislature also passed an aircraft parts and maintenance sales tax exemption, that when paired with our existing property tax benefits for housing of aircraft, will make the Council Bluffs Airport and Iowa Western Community College’s aircraft maintenance training facility even more attractive.

They also passed a workforce omnibus bill that will positively impact teachers and healthcare workers across the state and made reforms to the state’s unemployment benefits system.

The Legislature was unable to pass some priority pieces of legislation for the CB Chamber, including: port authorities and medical malpractice reform to make us more competitive with Nebraska.

The Legislature also eliminated the open enrollment deadline of March 1st and the 90-day transfer waiting period for athletes. Both will create budgetary and staffing uncertainty for school districts.

The Governor also used her executive authority to provide ARPA funds for housing, broadband, placemaking, and childcare.

As we look ahead to 2023, talent attraction and retention will remain the biggest issue. The state needs to identify a consistent source of placemaking funding and will need to address port authorities and medical malpractice.

We also welcome the opportunity to discuss improvements to the state’s property tax system while maintaining local economic development tools.

ENSURING ACCESSIBLE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL

ANGELINE LARSON, DIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC AND BUSINESS OPERATIONS OF THE CRISS HEART CENTER AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL & MEDICAL CENTER.

As a child, Angeline Larson saw the challenges of the blue-collar workers through her father, a career truck driver for UPS. Providing for five children made things tight at times, but health care wasn’t a concern, showing her how vital quality, accessible care was in the life of a family.

“He was a Teamster and he had really good health care,” she said. “My mom and dad were always so thankful; had we not had access to that company-provided health insurance through the union, it would have been very difficult for mom to birth five kids and to keep bones set and medications provided. It provided for us beyond what you see at face value.”

Medicine for the Masses Larson toyed with the idea of becoming a physician, but when she got to college something didn’t seem to fit. She applied for and won a Rotary Club scholarship that sent her to Lusaka, Zambia, for a year to study public health and perform HIV research.

“It was there I found a calling in administration and it led my early career in public health,” she said.

Her career in leadership roles has sought to alleviate disparities in the content and quality of health care. As chief operating officer for Charles Drew Health Center, her work improved the electronic health records system of the federally qualified health center, as well as informed other organizations in Nebraska and Iowa to do the same.

She provided oversight for health programs serving low-income and vulnerable populations including Healthcare for the Homeless’ (HCH), two locations and 3,000 annual visits; Public Housing Primary Care’s four locations; and School-Based Health Center program’s four locations.

She also led implementation of Title X funding and compliance, including a multi-million dollar, privately funded program aimed at reducing STIs and unplanned pregnancies in Douglas County. She also spearheaded the implementation of the Adolescent Health Risk Assessment and Intervention program in partnership with the American Public Health Association.

A New Challenge Each of these roles challenged Larson’s multifaceted skillset differently, but her adaptive communication style and fearlessness facing challenges were tools she used consistently and to great effect. These are also things she’s carried over to her new role as director of strategic and business operations at the Criss Heart Center at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center.

“Effective communication is much more than just speaking. I really do feel like I am translating messages in many of my roles,” she said. “It’s really about being a good listener and a following up. I also think it really has to do with my choices to just do something different.

“In my career, I have said ‘yes,’ to experiences and jobs that people don’t normally say yes to. I’ve learned so much about listening and reading body language and not shying away from problems that I’ve never had to solve before. Experiences that other people think are either odd or not for them or too difficult, I’m sort of drawn to those challenges. I think it’s helped me today.”

In her new role, which Larson moved into seven months ago, she is responsible for all business aspects of the heart center, from financial planning and budgeting to ensuring the center is aptly represented within Children’s Hospital and the community.

A California native, Larson received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and an MBA from Creighton University. She’s also completed the Great Plains Public Health Leadership Institute at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the PRESENTING SPONSOR Health Care Executive Program at UCLA.
