For Omaha-based Triage Medical Staffing, the current preparation of its new headquarters building is important, but equal attention is being given to work-flow processes and the firm’s enhanced technology base. “We’re getting a pretty good handle on ins, outs, ups and downs of medical traveling, an industry that has exploded in the last few years,” said founder and CEO John Maaske of Triage Medical Staffing. Maaske co-owns the Omaha-based company with 380 employees with founder and COO Tyler Pieper. And there’s no letup planned for anytime soon. Triage, which has enjoyed three-fold growth in the past couple of years, places travel nursing, laboratory, radiology, cardiopulmonary and rehab therapy talent in facilities across the country. Triage, which was founded in Omaha in 2006 with four employees, expects to hire its 500th employee early in 2023. In addition to hiring new travel nurse recruiters and allied health recruiters, Maaske said he expects to add support staff in compliance, innovation, people and culture, marketing
and finance over the next couple years, both in its Omaha headquarters and satellite office in Cincinnati. Triage has been recognized by Inc. Magazine six times as one of the fastest growing companies in America and a top travel company for the fifth consecutive year by BluePipes, a health care management recording program. “We’ve deliberately built Triage on a foundation of not just being a traveling nursing company but rather as a traveling allied health company with most recently the addition of radiology, medical laboratory and rehabilitation therapy,” Maaske said. He said cardiopulmonary and respiratory therapists have been strongly demanded by health care institutions due to pandemic issues in the treatment of asthmatics and those with other breathing conditions. Still, nursing — which is responsible for about 70% of placements — leads other categories in growth opportunities. Contracts, on average, are signed for stints of about 13 weeks. Most medical institutions want nurses with at least two years of experience.

“We serve about 1,000 medical facilities annually,” Maaske said. “Based on demand and on-call hours, the average traveling nurse will work in excess of 36 to 40 hours a week.” Triage’s retention rate is 65 to 66%. The firm serves all 50 states, with its greatest concentration of workers on the East and West Coasts.
New Building
For the last five years Triage has been headquartered in about 30,000 square feet at 12020 Pacific St., but earlier this year the firm announced it plans to triple its space with a move to the former Medical Solutions building at 13609 California St., which takes up about 100,000 square feet. Maaske and Pieper, with the help of a group of investors, purchased the multi-story structure which they hope to move into next year. Maaske said the investment is sorely needed and qualifies as a priority because it impacts the “people, process and technology” criteria he has imposed for attracting driven and high-character people. Triage branding sets the corporate landscape for “real and ready.” The former stresses a candid, straight-forward workplace; the latter cultivates the message that employees need to be ready for what’s next. The current Triage office houses a games area that receives daily use, nap pods, retro high school bleachers and a well-stocked beer fridge. Maaske views the climate as demonstrating that the firm doesn’t always take itself too seriously. The idea is to balance the firm’s explosive growth while honoring its laid-back, employee-first roots.
Technology Investment
The newest technology — an investment of millions of dollars over the past five years — has been important to Triage’s growth, a statement Maaske said has been a “huge differential in the marketplace.” For example, one of the biggest hurdles to Triage’s growth had been credentialing — the tracking, storage and management of information on its travelers. In 2021, Triage purchased a New York-based firm Kamana, which had developed a compliance and credentialing platform. The technology enables health care professionals to create a universal digital profile that can be shared with agencies and facilities throughout the country. “We call it a digital wallet,” Maaske said. “Everything is housed in a secure location, which means that travelers can ditch the paper file they used to carry.” Maaske, an Omaha native who graduated in 1996 from DePaul University with a concentration of coursework in business and English, traces his entrepreneurial interests back to Omaha Central High School and his DECA and marketing instructor Harry Gaylor. “There was so much energy in that classroom that I found it to be inspiring,” Maaske said. “After studying how to market cookies, I couldn’t wait to start up a business.” Pieper, a Nebraska native and graduate of University of NebraskaKearney, worked with Maaske at Aureus Medical for five years before the duo set out and founded Triage. Maaske was recently recognized with a Patriot Award from the Department of Defense. He was nominated by an employee, staff sergeant Brian Tyler who is a member of the Army National Guard.

From improved medical records systems to drone delivery systems to artificially intelligent (AI) health care companions, Nebraska medical organizations are helping shape the future of patient care. Methodist Health System recently debuted its Methodist Care Innovation Center, according to Kent Sona, vice president and chief information officer. “This is a new space in our information technology department where physicians and other staff can explore new concepts and innovation efforts,” he said. Methodist has implemented Medigate — Healthcare Internet of Things (IoT), which has improved the system’s remote monitoring capabilities and enhanced its visibility, allowing it to improve security and operational efficiencies. The organization has also converted from paper faxing to Cerner Work Queue Monitor, which allows patient documents to be identified, labeled and uploaded directly into the electronic medical records (EMR). Nebraska Medicine has made major enhancements to its backup and recovery infrastructure, allowing it to quickly back up multiple terabytes of data in minutes rather than hours and recover systems in hours rather than days, according to Ron Carson,

executive director of enterprise applications. A major security enhancement was completed by creating one identity across multiple systems and provision access based on user role. “This lays the groundwork to automate the provisioning process, which will be transformational in ensuring the right people have the right access to systems when they join Nebraska Medicine or when they change roles within the health system,” he said. “To increase patient safety, we integrated infusion pumps with the electronic health record. We also invested in the infrastructure to keep patient data moving quickly and securely. Many wireless access points were upgraded, and we further built out micro-segmentation to ensure data moves securely across the network.” Boys Town has expanded capabilities in the Boys Town National Research Hospital and related clinics, according to Christopher Wren, senior vice president of information technology. “We inaugurated the Institute for Human Neuroscience, which is revolutionizing child and adolescent brain research with a cutting-edge neuroscience research facility housing two next-generation MEG (magnetoencephalography) systems.”

To support the growth of its health care initiatives, Boys Town overhauled its technology infrastructure in 2021, including the implementation of the Epic EMR system and the first phase of the Workday Enterprise resourceplanning system.

Since Encounter Telehealth president and CEO Jen Amis took over the firm in late 2015, both hardware and software have improved, and prices have dropped. Back then, the firm sent desktop computers to each senior living community it partnered with. “Now we send them all iPads, so residents don’t have to go into a specific clinical room,” Amis said. “A staff member can take the iPad directly to wherever that resident wants to be seen.” States continue to open the practice environment for nurse practitioners, allowing them to diagnose, treat and prescribe like the medical doctors. “We collaborate closely with all medical directors at the senior living communities, but this gives [the nurse practitioners] the authority to prescribe without requiring the MD’s time,” Amis said. Insurance also has changed dramatically over the past seven years, with COVID-19 driving part of this change. Originally, Encounter Telehealth was restricted to Medicare recipients only in skilled nursing facilities, hospitals or designated rural areas. Now the firm can see all Medicare recipients regardless of their location, including assisted and independent living communities. The stigma surrounding mental health has been reduced, thanks in part to the pandemic. “So many people had depression or anxiety, understandably so because it was a really scary time,” Amis said. “With so many celebrities, professional athletes and politicians talking about their own struggles with mental health issues, there’s a greater acceptance of mental health care.”
Seven years ago, Encounter Telehealth had its EMR system on a physical server in its office. Today the EMR is cloud-based, which is less expensive. The organization also uses a cloud-based video solution. “We’re developing our own platform that will integrate this video with the scheduling from the EMR component and also customize it a bit more specific to our workflow as a national telehealth company,” Amis said.

“Microservices will have a major impact on health care and our technology strategy for both the near and long term,” Carson said. “The proliferation of application programming interfaces (APIs) and the ability to connect disparate systems together is going to enable new levels of care that were not previously possible.” In the past, data contained in each of Nebraska Medicine’s niche systems would have stayed in that system or would require manual copying to get the data into the firm’s enterprise systems. Now this is being automatically transferred using APIs and Smart on Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) interfaces. “It’s much easier to get that niche data into our enterprise systems to serve as knowledge and information for caregivers at the bedside,” Carson said. Drones are an upcoming technology that can complete simple tasks and remove the burden from caregivers. Drones could deliver medications to the patients’ doorsteps, and specimens can be delivered securely to the lab. Drones could pull supplies for surgery, deliver them on time for surgical start times and the same drone could restock shelves. “I foresee that in the future, drones could be part of the first responder team delivering patients to emergency departments and bypassing traffic congestion,” Carson said. “These types of advancements will increase the quality of care being delivered and make Page 7 • July 1, 2022

Nebraska Innovation Campus (NIC) has several companies that are involved in research and development (R&D) in the health care arena, according to Executive Director Daniel J. Duncan. Companies that have opened offices at Innovation Campus include Synbiotic Health, PraesensBio, Tyreos and Virtual Incision. “Innovations range from vaccine development, food products that promote health microbiome functions in humans to a company making a surgical robot,” Duncan said. “[MatMaCorp] was doing R&D on NIC and has since relocated to another area of Lincoln. They make molecular diagnostic equipment.” Coming in the near future is
monitoring of human vital signs using wave radar, a contactless method of monitoring vitals, with applications for both hospitals and home health. “Imagine being able to sleep the whole night in the hospital without being woken up every four hours for a vitals check,” Sona said. Another anticipated advancement is AI powered health care companions for the home. “The AI companion could learn about the patients, ask them questions, engage them, detect if something is wrong and notify the family or caregivers accordingly,” Sona said.

off. Improved outcomes for patients, reduce re-admissions, stay ahead of possible issues.” Methodist is eyeing expansion of telehealth, leveraging AI — AI physician assistants, AI care coordination, AI staffing support — to assist with providing care to aid in

“We have a long history of success with glucometers in our remote patient monitoring program,” Carson said. “We also used pulse oximeters at home to check patients during the height of the pandemic to ensure respiration issues didn’t develop post-discharge. Pedometers at the bedside are an effortless way to ensure patients are getting up and walking post-surgery, which we know helps speed recovery.”

Leaders in attendance represented 323 organizations and hailed from 37 states (and the District of Columbia) and three countries. “Over 600 tuned in on conference day to participate virtually and connect with each other on ICAN’s virtual platform,” said Aileen Warren, of the first conference she oversaw as ICAN president and CEO. “Attendees continued to find value in having a virtual attendance option, whether by personal preference or being remote.” Warren said companies even invited leaders from other geographies and offices to participate virtually in the likes of live chat, topical discussion channels and online profiles.

“We even [had] a moment in the morning saying ‘hello’ to some of our virtual attendees who were participating via organization watch parties, and had them join us live on screen to wave,” she said. “It was a fun moment to connect the two audiences together.” Attendees, Warren said, have remarked on this year’s strong keynote lineup. “They really loved the speakers and thematic topics,” she said. Opening keynote, Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall, was described as a “favorite,” starting the day off with high energy around the message of being “all in” and leading with inclusion and heart. “The theme was timely to what businesses and managers are experiencing right now as a result of the new systems of work brought about by the digitalization [plus] automation, hybrid flexibility and changing employee expectations,” Warren continued.

Warren also remarked on how they brought back their larger exhibitor show area, which partly featured book signings by The Bookworm. “We also reintroduced breakout sessions and featured two locally focused conversations on diversity, equity and inclusion and Omaha’s digital landscape,” she added. Warren, who succeeded Susan Henricks earlier this year, said she was most surprised by the “amount of detail” invested into a “world-class event.” “The ICAN team has done this successfully many times before,” she said. “But it certainly gave me an appreciation for everything that needs to be in place to ensure a great experience for our attendees.”

Forging forward, next year’s conference on May 17, 2023, will also mark its 30th anniversary. “We certainly are planning to celebrate in a big way,” Warren said. She also noted they are exploring how to build on the hybrid model and: “Deliver an experience that tops itself year over year.”

BRIAN AKERT EXPANDS PORTFOLIO AT HOLLAND BASHAM

There are a lot of moving pieces that go into designing a building. For Brian Akert, associate partner with Holland Basham Architects, all projects hold one essential element in common: a galvanizing relationship between architect and client, something for which he has shown a singular skill throughout his career. “What I have traditionally done here at Holland Basham is a lot of the front-end schematic design programming,” he said. “I’m really heavily involved up front, trying to understand what the wants and the needs of the client are, taking that information and turning it into 3D space. “To understand how everything comes together on a site, you have to first look at it from a programmatic element, trying to figure out how two spaces might be able to conjoin together to create something greater than what they are separately.”
Committed to the Client Akert said this close working relationship with customers not only provides the nuts-and-bolts information and vision for the building to come, but it also helps keep his focus right where it belongs. “I’ve always taken the approach that it’s not a building for me, it’s a building for the client,” he said. “They’re the ones who are going to be inhabiting it and using it day in and day out. “Success for me isn’t a magazine cover, but that a client feels like they were listened to and that their needs were captured within that 3D space. “That’s the goal, making sure the clients are happy at the end of projects and even within the first 12 months of being within a new building. If they’re happy, we’re happy.” Akert caught the bug for architecture early. A creative kid, he was fascinated by how art and technology could intersect to make something tangible. “I always enjoyed creating as a kid, whether it was Legos or blocks. I enjoyed a lot of art classes as well,” he said. “I want to say it was about high school when I got into architecture as a field. I took
some different computer-aided design classes and 3D modeling classes that really started to spark my interest in how you can create things, create environments. Using computer software was a really fun way to create space and create environments.”
One of the Team Earning his Bachelor of Science in design from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2009 and his Master of Architecture, also from UNL, in 2011, Akert quickly found a home at Holland Basham. “We work together as a team here quite often,” he said. “I’m trying to think of any project that I’ve been in a silo on, and I don’t think it exists. We always use multiple professionals – project architect, project designer, interior designers. There’s always a team that’s around every single project. It’s a very collaborative effort.” This human expertise is aided greatly by technology, something Akert and his colleagues have steadily embraced to help spur innovation and accuracy in design. “When I was in school, these tools were kind of in their infancy, but today we are just trying to stay on top of the various visualization components,” he said. “It’s about how we can use computational design to optimize those view corridors and help make our job easier.” When he’s not working, Akert is equally passionate about being involved in community groups, through which he works to improve quality of life for all. “That’s kind of who we are as architects; we tend to look at organizations that build the community,” he said. “I really value the different partnerships that we have and the different ways we can improve the PRESENTING SPONSOR community as a result.”

OMAHA IS PARTICIPATING IN MIT’S GLOBAL PROGRAM, COHORT 9 The MIT Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program (MIT REAP) has announced that Omaha is participating in its Global program, Cohort 9. Over the next two years, through MIT REAP, the Omaha team will learn and adapt the frameworks developed by MIT to accelerate innovation-driven entrepreneurship (IDE) in their region. MIT REAP is a global initiative that engages with communities around the world to supercharge IDE ecosystems and transform economies. The Global program employs an evidence-based “team” approach, translating MIT research and insights into a practical, actionable, and strategic framework that convenes and educates key stakeholders, and empowers regional leaders to drive meaningful, long-term economic and social change. MIT REAP Team Omaha is championed by Laurel Oetken, Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation for the Greater Omaha Chamber, and includes highly influential regional leaders who represent five major stakeholder groups: government, university, corporate, risk capital, and entrepreneurs.
