FROM LEFT, KATIE LAKIN AND JILL DUDZINSKI, FOUNDERS OF A LOCAL COLLECTIVE.
Beyond Competition A LOCAL COLLECTIVE BUILDS COMMUNITY FOR BOUTIQUES
After meeting through Instagram and forging a friendship over shared business struggles, Katie Lakin and Jill Dudzinski decided to create a collaborative network. Now in its sixth year with 140-plus members, A Local Collective (ALC) is a multi-faceted business resource offering three signature events.
The co-founders have set their sights on expanding not only beyond the Omaha and Lincoln metro areas but also beyond the state borders.
“Our goal with A Local Collective is twofold,” said Lakin, who owns Little Mango boutique. “Primarily, we strive to connect small business owners through networking, education, and events. Secondly, we aim to bring more awareness of local small businesses to consumers in our area.”
The genesis of ALC can be traced back to the duo’s respective challenges in similar spaces as boutique business owners. They recalled the overwhelming and somewhat lonely nature of small business ownership.
“Quickly, we realized many other small business owners felt the same as we did and the idea for A Local Collective came to fruition,” said Dudzinski, who owns Hello Ruby, a mobile boutique.
ALC launched in 2018, with its membership offering to follow in December 2022. More recently, the pair announced the official debut of ALC’s online directory in March.
“The online directory inadvertently started in 2020 during the pandemic,” Lakin explained. “Our focus until then had really been on in-person events. But, in 2020 when everything closed down, we realized the need to help these brick [and] mortar and online businesses in a different way during that uncertain time.”
From there, they developed online shopping events.
“We essentially built out our online directory at that time and held weekend events where consumers could shop 50-plus local small shops online in one spot via our online directory,” Dudzinski said. “It was also a one-stop shop to discover small businesses locally.”
As the founders developed their membership opportunity, they indicated the directory was positioned as an “added bonus” to becoming a member.
“We aim to get eyes on our small shops in as many ways as we can and the online directory serves as a way for anyone — not just locally, but regionally and nationally — to discover Nebraska-based businesses,” Lakin noted.
“In addition, we have set up the directory, [so] that you can locate shops alphabetically, by location, by storefront, and by category.”
The duo can quantify progress in each of their offerings/services, isolating more than 140 members at the time of this writing.
“Some of our members have met their business ‘besties’ through our membership, which is ultimately one of the pillars of A Local Collective,” Dudzinski said. “We believe the networking component is such a big piece of the membership; being able to meet other small business owners who are going through the same things as you, maybe not at the same time, but to build relationships with others and bounce ideas off of each other and just be there for each other.”
Lakin added that these connections and idea-sharing may not have occurred without joining ALC as members.
“So many of our members have made business relationships with each other, which as a small business owner, means a ton,” she said. “Small

business ownership can be very lonely, and you often feel like you’re on an island and don’t have contacts or people to connect with. One of the major goals of our ALC membership was to change this.”
Safe space
The founders also discussed strides made on the rental side of ALC.
“This idea came from wanting to offer small business owners a space they can rent out for their own pop-ups, for photoshoots and branding shoots,” Dudzinski explained. “There weren’t a lot of available places to do this and a lot of small business owners work out of their homes.”
From there, ALC expanded offering its space for other events, be it for birthday parties, graduations, baby and wedding showers, or diaper kegs.
“We even have a few photographers who use it for photoshoots,” she said.
“It’s unique in that it is a very clean, blank canvas that features a beautiful glass garage door and a fenced-in parking lot that easily can be used for additional seating or outdoor games, or food trucks. Plus, you can bring in your own food and drink, which is not always the case at rental spaces.”
The location at 302 North Front Street in downtown Waterloo hosts ALC’s signature Modern Market event. Such ALC events, too, originated from a chance that they took back in December 2018.
“We rented out a bay in Westroads Mall and turned it into a small business market during the holiday season,” Dudzinski said. “We had approximately 12 shops in one spot. It was a risk we took spending money on the space, on marketing … but out of the gate, we had tremendous support from the community, and that helped us carve the way for our signature events which are becoming locally recognized.”
In addition to its holiday Modern Market in November, Lakin referred to its Fall Modern Market in September and its Boutique Warehouse Sale in late July and early August.
“These are our three signature ALC events that wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t bite the bullet that year and just tried it,” she said. “And these events have become staple events for local business owners annually.”
Lifting up members
Dudzinski and Lakin indicated it’s not unusual for members to say they learned more in one day than they did in the past several years.
The Retail Roundtable, for example, is a day dedicated to learning, networking and collaborating, with a focus on essential topics for business owners, as well as tips to tricks from experts in the areas of accounting, branding, social media, and marketing.
“Long term for A Local Collective, we would love to continue growing the membership outside of the Omaha/Lincoln area, which is primarily where our members are located currently,” Dudzinski said.
“We are also looking for local businesses to become sponsors of our
signature events. We feel like this is a great opportunity for local businesses to be a part of a growing community of small business owners and gain exposure as an event sponsor.”
ALC Nebraska is also serving as a model for potential expansion beyond the state’s borders.
“We feel this is a concept that so many other communities could benefit from and would love to help it grow in other areas around the nation,” Lakin said.
“Local businesses help keep communities thrive and keep them diverse,” Dudzinski stated. “But these businesses need the support of people in their communities to keep them afloat.”

NOTABLE PROJECTS DRIVE SUNNY OUTLOOK FOR OMAHA METRO
BY MICHELLE LEACH
MARK NORMAN VP, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER
GOSS
PROFESSOR AND MACALLISTER CHAIR IN REGIONAL ECONOMICS, CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY
Omaha’s urban core is poised to make a tremendous, lasting impact on the health and vitality of the metro, as the Greater Omaha Chamber commits to adding 30,000 new residents and 30,000 new jobs over the next two decades. Yet, the role of agriculture and the rural economy as the state’s backbone remains undeniable, and this symbiosis shows in economists’ references to regional research and in small business leaders’ statewide priorities and initiatives.
Continued investment
While upbeat, Mark Norman, vice president of economic development, indicated the Greater Omaha Chamber is not resting on its laurels.
“Continuous effort is needed to attract new projects and support our existing businesses,” Norman said.
TIM MITTAN DISTRICT DIRECTOR, NEBRASKA SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
Assistance ranges from initial contact to long-term relationships through its Business Retention and Expansion program.
“Corporations are drawn to communities, and to specific areas within those communities, that are demonstrating growth; those areas that provide the lifestyle and amenities that their workforce of the future desire,” he said.
“Omaha’s urban core can provide that lifestyle and amenities to continue to attract companies, but we cannot relax. We must continue to improve and tell our story to prospective companies to build on this growth.”
The story at present is partially colored by the likes of the hundreds of millions of dollars in investment that Norman referred to in the city’s downtown parks, like Kiewit Luminarium and Steelhouse Omaha. Norman also highlighted NuStyle Development’s recent announcement to convert the Central Park Plaza buildings into apartments.

Labor force growth is a critical component of economic expansion as talent attraction and retention are frequently mentioned as the top concern from local companies.
MARK NORMAN,
VICE PRESIDENT OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, GREATER OMAHA CHAMBER
“Of course, Mutual of Omaha’s new headquarters building is rising several stories into the air now,” he said.
Investment isn’t limited to downtown; for instance, Norman referenced growth such as West Omaha’s Avenue One “live, work, stay and play” center, and warehouse and industrial activity in southwest Sarpy.
Showcasing statistical data
The Chamber’s research team put some numbers to the current and historical growth that is influencing prospects.
“Douglas County’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) grew 9.2% from 2021 to 2022 — the fastest growth of any county with at least 500,000 residents in the United States for that time period,” Norman said. “One of the main drivers of this growth was the finance and insurance industry, which saw growth of 28.1% compared to a 1.6% decrease for the U.S.”
The industry has a large impact, because of Douglas County’s high concentration of employment among insurance carriers, reportedly almost 3.5 times the concentration compared to the national average.
The GDP for the Omaha Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) as a whole grew during the same time period but at a slower rate at 6.3%.
Following finance and insurance, professional and business services experienced the next-largest growth as a percentage at 11.5% for the MSA.
“The potential projects that the Chamber sees in our pipeline reflect the larger macro-economic climate,” he said. “In 2021 [to] 2022, we saw a lot of warehouse/distribution projects, as companies rushed to strengthen their supply chains.”
While the segment has slowed over the last 12 months, Norman said manufacturing is strong as companies “re-shore” and those in consumer

products experience increased demand. For commercial offices, demand is mainly local.
“I do feel that we will see a gradual resurgence in office demand,” he said. “But the space requirements will be smaller.”
This year, Norman said the chamber is focusing on key metrics of the labor force, primary job and wage growth when monitoring the economy.
“Labor force growth is a critical component of economic expansion as talent attraction and retention are frequently mentioned as the top concern from local companies,” he stated.
He said the labor force surpassed pre-pandemic levels last year.

On average, we are up from the previous year but still below pre-pandemic levels. Many factors contribute to that, including higher interest rates and inflation.
TIM MITTAN, DISTRICT DIRECTOR, SBA
“Primary jobs are critical because they inject new money into the local economy, which can then circulate and support secondary jobs in retail, hospitality, and other local services,” he said. “Prior to the pandemic, primary job growth in Omaha was slower than the U.S., but it had similar trends.”
In 2020, Omaha fared better than the U.S., with Norman remarking that primary jobs have been on an upswing since then at 1.6% growth between 2022 and 2023.
“Wage growth is a vital component of a healthy local economy, driving consumer spending, improving living standards, attracting talent, reducing inequality, increasing tax revenues, and sustaining overall economic growth,” he said.
Similar to labor force data, Norman said wage growth has been slow when compared to the U.S., with 4.1% in 2023 versus 5.2% nationally. During that time, construction, education, health services, leisure, and hospitality represented the fastest-growing industries, all at around 5%.
All in all, Norman said higher interest rates have temporarily slowed “some initiatives.”
“But we are starting to see more activity this year,” he added. “While my answer a year ago would still have been positive, my impression is that things are improving and more projects will come off the shelf moving forward. We are talking to a lot of companies right now who feel the next 12 [to] 18 months are the right time for an expansion.”
A regional perspective
When asked for the most timely research to quantify the metro’s economic health, Ernie Goss referenced the Rural Mainstreet Index (RMI) and the Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index. The former assesses 10 states characterized as “agriculturally- and energy-dependent.”
The survey presents an early snapshot and real-time analysis of the region’s economy.
Released in May, the index sunk below the 50.0 reading for “growth neutral” for the ninth consecutive month, falling from 45.8 in April to 44.2. The index accounts for farming and ranching land prices, farm equipment sales, banking, hiring, confidence, and home and retail sales.
Overall, Goss, the MacAllister chair and professor of economics at Heider College of Business who also serves as director of Creighton University’s Economic Forecasting Group, attributed “higher interest rates, weaker agriculture commodity prices, and higher grain storage costs” to the persistent below-growth neutral reading.
“For the first time in more than four years, Creighton’s survey is detecting weakening farmland price growth,” Goss said. “Only 4.2% of bankers reported that farmland prices expanded from previous levels.”
Confidence was at its lowest level since November, dropping to 28.8 from 37.5 in April.
“Weak agriculture commodity prices and farm exports combined with

downturns in farm equipment sales over the past several months continued to constrain banker confidence,” Goss explained.
Nebraska’s RMI dropped from 42.7 to 41.8, with farmland prices and new hiring indices dropping under the 50/neutral reading to 46.7 and 48.2, respectively. Exports of ag goods and livestock, however, were up Year-to-Date (YTD) by 19.4% since 2023, according to International Trade Association data.
The latter Business Conditions Index, released in early June, is characterized as a monthly survey of supply managers in nine states. Conducted since 1994, the survey produces leading economic indicators of the Mid-America economy, and its methodology aligns with the National Institute for Supply Management; here again, “50.0” represents “growth neutral” on a “0” to “100” scale.
“The overall index, much like the U.S. reading, has vacillated around growth neutral since December of 2023,” Goss said. “Additionally, supply managers remained pessimistic regarding the 2024 outlook, with approximately 42% expecting a downturn in economic activity for the remainder of 2024.”
The index reportedly dropped from 52.5 to 48.2 between April and May.
Partly, Goss isolated jobs gains of .4% and hourly wage gains of 4.8% in the regional manufacturing sector as “exceeding the rate of inflation by almost two percentage points,” as well as a six-month outlook that remains decidedly pessimistic, albeit improved to 33.2 (from April’s 32 reading).

conditions over the next six months,” Goss added. “However, this is a slight improvement from April’s 45% of supply managers expecting slowing economic growth.”
Nebraska’s overall index reading had increased above the growth-neutral threshold but fell again in May to 45.4 from 50. New orders, production or sales, and employment are all under growth neutral at 41.7, 47.4, and 34.9, respectively.
Delivery lead time and inventories were above growth neutral, at 50.2 and 53.1, respectively. Citing BLS manufacturing sector employment data, the survey reported gains in jobs of 3.3% — the highest increase out of all of the states surveyed within the 9-state area — and hourly wage gains of 1.8%.
Supporting growth
Asked to quantify business activity in the metro area, the Lender Relations Specialists at the Nebraska Small Business Administration, Debbie Wilson, and Mike Marsh, provided a list of approved loans by congressional district in Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 (October to May).
Year-to-Date (YTD), Nebraska’s first congressional district spanned 92 approved loans. The second congressional district, encompassing the core of the metro, stood at 106 loans YTD, while there were 51 loans for the third congressional district spanning the rest of the state/outside of the metro areas. When comparing total 7a and 504 loan approvals, by month and YTD, the most recently available figures at the time of this writing were for May, at 30, 29, and 46 in FY 2022, FY 2023, and FY 2024, respectively.
YTD figures stood at 272, 221, and 249 for each of the past three years, respectively. Likewise, the total loan amount in May was nearly $26 million, with an average value of $564,226, compared to FY 2023 and FY 2022 figures for the month of around $12 million and $416,000, and $16.5 million and $550,000, respectively.
YTD totals for the past three fiscal years were reported at just north of $107 million, about $102 million, and nearly $131 million, respectively. For FY 2023 as a whole, the value of SBA guaranteed financing exceeded $140.5 million across 326 loans. FY 2022 there were 384 loans totaling almost $199 million. Pre-pandemic, FY 2019 saw 329 total loans valued at $143.6 million.
“On average, we are up from the previous year but still below pre-pandemic levels,” said SBA District Director Tim Mittan. “Many factors contribute to that, including higher interest rates and inflation.”
Via figures provided by Wilson and Marsh, the average fixed and variable rates YTD ranged from 8.16% in January to 8.96% in December, and 9.4% in

“All small businesses across the entire state of Nebraska are a priority,” Mittan said. “This year we are putting special emphasis on businesses in our rural communities. Many small businesses are familiar with our resource partners like the Center for Rural Affairs, the Nebraska Enterprise Fund, and the Nebraska Business Development Centers.”
He said these partners reach areas they sometimes cannot.
“However, we are trying to be more visible in communities all across the state,” Mittan said.
“One specific area we are focusing on is the contracting arm of the SBA. There are so many opportunities to contract with the federal government that many small businesses need to learn about. We are doing what we can to conduct more in-person training on this topic. So, business owners can learn more about it and where to get help.”

VICE PRESIDENT OF STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS, LUEDER CONSTRUCTION
In January when Eppley Airfield announced the nearly $1 billion renovation that will completely transform the state’s largest commercial airport, it kick-started construction growth in Omaha.
Now, six months in, experts say opportunities in the construction sector are still running high, even as serious challenges nip at the industry’s heels.
“New construction continues to be strong in the Omaha metro area,” said Sheila O’Connor, executive director of the Associated General Contractors Nebraska Building Chapter. “Recent approval for the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s western campus expansion, along with Eppley Airport and Mutual of Omaha’s ongoing construction, indicate Omaha continues to be a growing and vibrant metropolitan area. There is also an increase in housing — both new construction and conversions of older buildings — dining, retail and mixed-use across the metro.”
Ron Weis, vice president of strategic partnerships with Lueder Construction, said he would rate the current construction market a 6 out of 10.
“Our backlog is strong, with great owners and design teams, but the marketplace has some uncertainty,” he said. “We have seen startup delays on several of our projects, causing challenges with staffing our project team.”
Omaha fairs better
Nationally the picture has been a muddle. In May, constructiondive.com reported construction backlog dropped 1.2% to 8.3 months, following two months of gains, in a year already trending below 2023. High interest rates continue to take their toll, resulting in higher construction spending even as activity has slowed.

THE PROJECT IS SCHEDULED TO BE COMPLETED IN EARLY 2025. (COURTESY OF HAWKINS CONSTRUCTION)
Labor is another big hurdle. LBM Journal reported in June the industry started the year with 400,000 job openings nationally for skilled labor and cited stats from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that projected an annual need of 723,000 workers to keep up with industry demands.
We are seeing pricing stabilize and become more predictable over the past year or so.
Weis said his company has done a good job of managing the tight labor market, which is one reason for its better-than-national-average market performance.
“Our operations team has increased our field staff accordingly and has had great success bringing in talented carpenters,” he said. “As for the subcontractors, we rely on strong communication and planning to navigate any labor shortages. When we work with our trade partners and give them ample time to prepare for our pricing exercises, we see strong bid coverage, resulting in a more competitive environment.
“The same applies to the job site; planning is more critical than ever. Our operation teams implement several different scheduling types, allowing our trade partners time to plan for success.”
Two of the major ongoing projects the company is building include the first phase of Southside Terrace, a multi-unit housing project located at 5701 South 30th St. in Omaha. The $22.9 million project will feature multiple floor plans for up to five bedrooms and community space, encompassing a total of 112,000 square feet. The project, which broke ground in May, is expected to take about a year to complete.
Another current project, H+H Kia, is going up at 10902 South 150th St. in Papillion. That project, expected to be finished this fall, will offer 63,000 square feet of automotive space. The $24.5 million project offers several unique features including HVAC fixtures installed within the light fixture boxes.
Multi-family leads pack
Zak Olsen, president of Ronco Construction, said of the four markets his company serves — multi-family, distribution, manufacturing and office and historic renovation — multi-family construction continues to see the highest demand.
“Multi-family is the one that’s been hot and remains hot. Across the Midwest we’ve got about 1,600 units under construction right now, about 800 of them in the Omaha metro area,” he said. “The need for good, quality, affordable housing, whether it’s new commercial market-rate stuff with all the amenities or true affordable housing is high. We’ve got a good mix of both of those project types going on the multi-family side right now. There’s a lot of market reasons behind that. Interest rates being the way that they are, the affordability of home ownership has diminished.”
Case in point, one of Ronco’s current projects of interest is a 160-unit multi-family project, The Grant, which broke ground last summer and will be completed early next year. That project repurposes the site of a former health club by building the apartments and parking around it.
“The developer out of California that owned it partnered with a local developer and said, ‘Hey, let’s find a way to use some of the amenity components of this facility, such as the indoor swimming pool, spa, et cetera,” Olsen said. “The finished project will have a swimming pool, pickleball court, bar, meeting room space. It’s amenity rich. It was a great way to see new life come back to an urban infill site that was otherwise sitting dormant.”
Good things on the horizon
Both Weis and Olsen said they had a lot of optimism for the future of the construction market, despite the challenges of cost, labor and interest rates.
“We are seeing pricing stabilize and become more predictable over the past year or so,” Weis said. “The pricing hasn’t decreased as much as many want, but we are having more success planning long-lead materials. We aren’t seeing the spikes in raw materials like in 2021 and 2022. The market has somewhat stabilized with an increase of three or four percent.
Olsen noted a large amount of civic projects.
“Look at the downtown library, which we just finished here last year, the Riverfront just got completed, the Luminarium that got built last year, the addition of the performing arts center,” he said. “There’s a lot of civic projects that are really good for the city and are helping us grow as an industry. That in turn is helping us create the Omaha that we all want to have.”

CELEBRATING
Honoring John Heaston FACE ON THE BARROOM FLOOR EVENT UNPRECEDENTED MEMORIAL
Since 1971, The Omaha Press Club’s “Face on the Barroom Floor” has honored nearly 200 individuals who have made their mark in the community and beyond. It’s a diverse group consisting of politicians, athletes, entertainers, business leaders, members of the media and other newsmakers, all honored with a caricature unveiled during a public toast/ roast and displayed in perpetuity at OPC.
John Heaston, known best in the community as co-founder and longtime publisher of the former alternative newsweekly, The Reader, was named as the 178th “Face,” with his caricature unveiling and celebration scheduled for the evening of Friday, May 31. The event was expected to be a little unconventional; Heaston had been fighting leukemia for four years and due to his compromised immune system was planning to greet attendees from a safe distance as they entered the lobby of the venue. Instead, Heaston’s “Face on the Barroom Floor” event was unprecedented, serving as a memorial of sorts following the news of his death that morning.
“The event was to start at 5:30 p.m.,” OPC board member Roger Humphries said. “I asked (OPC event coordinator Christine Jones) to call John’s family to see what they wanted to do. Knowing John’s background in the arts and entertainment field, I felt that he would have wanted the show to go on. And that’s exactly how the family felt.”
Ben Heaston, John’s brother, had been tapped to serve as emcee for the event’s original format. He said his mother Dorris and sister Rita insisted — while still at the hospital (a second sister, Eileen, lives in Alaska) — that the Face on the Barroom Floor event continue in some way.
“I told them… ‘The mood of this whole thing tonight, it would be very, very tricky given the circumstances. I don’t know if we should move forward with it or what we should do.’ And they immediately snapped back that we had to do it,” Ben Heaston said.
His brother would have appreciated, he added wryly, that he was able to find humor in the situation.
“I wasn’t really given much of a choice in the matter of my mom and sister, who did not have to be on the microphone. I did mutter that a little under
my breath: ‘That’s easy for you to say.’” Nevertheless, he agreed that the family should give the okay for the event honoring their son and brother to still take place.
“Thus, we decided to move forward with the Face event. That’s the way John would have wanted it. It was a perfect way to celebrate his outstanding career and his loving and caring spirit,” Humphries said. “John loved the Face on the Barroom Floor events. In fact, he was a longtime member of the Face on the Barroom Floor committee. I said that evening, ‘I have no doubt he will be smiling down on tonight’s festivities. He carved out a unique niche in the Omaha news media. Now, he’ll be honored at the most unique event in the Omaha Press Club’s 53 years of Face on the Barroom Floor celebrations.’”
Heaston’s sister Rita Heaston-Clark said that her brother had been most looking forward to the roast at the hands of his brother, friends and colleagues.
“Knowing John, he would have had some really great remarks to each of them, and they each knew that. This is what John would have considered the perfect farewell to him,” she said. “While I feel horrible that some people had to find out about John’s passing when showing up for the event, he always maintained positivity around his illness and never wanted it to be something that was cause for sadness. I think we all — his mom, siblings and partner — hoped he could have held on for one more day just to be able to see/hear the roast. But, like Ben said during the roast, John liked to throw curveballs at you when you were helping him with something. There was always a ‘Yeah, about that ...’ to every event or project you helped him with, so it was a total John move.”
Chris Bowling, who worked for The Reader as an investigative reporter for several years, said he was impressed at the diversity of the crowd at Heaston’s Face event.
“All kinds of different people. And the common thing is that they all cared about John,” he said. “John was able to bring people together and see that we all did believe in something, or that there was a way where all of us could bring our different skills together to work toward a bigger goal.”
Summer Miller, who worked for Heaston in several roles for more than a decade including as editor-in-chief of The Reader, said Heaston was

deserving of the Face on the Barroom Floor honor for a multitude of reasons from his persistent curiosity to his faith in the community.
“He was the best of us. He is what every person should strive to be: deeply committed to doing what is right, ruthless supporter and champion of the underdog, truth seeker, and hopelessly optimistic. I judged every person I’ve ever met — and even myself — by the standard he set,” she said. “He was imperfect, terribly disorganized and messy, but he made you believe in the best version of yourself. He could organize people into accomplishing big things with very little, and I don’t believe he ever saw a roadblock he couldn’t figure out a way to remove … He also believed in the best version of our neighborhoods, our communities and this city. If it didn’t exist, he created it. I will forever feel honored to have called him
Heaston’s accomplishments in the media sector included establishing Pioneer Publishing with The Reader and adding bilingual Spanish/English publication El Perico, omahajobs. com, and PioneerMedia.Me (digital marketing and media consulting) to the group. He also served on the board of the Mildred D. Brown Memorial Study Center associated with the Omaha Star. Heaston’s advocacy work began with Reader coverage of systemic inequities and other social issues and his later involvement with El Perico and the Omaha Star. He eventually served at the national level for the Association of Alternative Newsmedia and the National Association of Hispanic Publications.
Heaston also co-founded the Omaha Entertainment & Arts Awards and helped found Earth Day Omaha.
“John worked tirelessly and oftentimes thanklessly over the years in varying capacities,” Heaston-Clark said. “He held city, county and state officials’ feet to the fire through his newspapers, always allowing his writers the freedom to ask the hard questions. He stood up for his principles, never once buckling under pressure from anyone.”
“He built something that was very different, that was very unique, that really challenged things. There are a lot of people who get recognized for doing really good work, but they don’t go out on a limb, they don’t really
try to take the risks that I think he took to build something that was truly unique and special,” Bowling said. “Everything that The Reader stood for is everything that people want to do in news now… they want it to be diverse, they want to report on communities that have not typically been reported on. John was doing that in the mid-to-late ‘90s when nobody was handing money out for people to do that. It was just always the right thing to do. And time has proven that he had the right idea.”
Heaston-Clark said her brother left behind a bigger legacy than he would have imagined.
“John’s partner, Lori Umstead, coined it perfectly when talking about all the connections John had: ‘Omaha isn’t that small, John is just that big.’”
“If you had that shared connection, if you were friends with John, then we’re friends with each other,” Ben Heaston said. “Really, his greatest legacy was the massive amount of love being created between tons of people who otherwise probably would have never intersected in life.”

Omaha Summer Arts Festival
THE EVENT’S FINAL YEAR ENDS ON A HIGH NOTE
Members of the Omaha community gathered in Aksarben village to celebrate the 50th and final year of the Omaha Summer Arts Festival on Friday June 7 through Sunday June 9.
Not only did the event feature booths from 135 artists from across the country, but guests also got to enjoy food and beverage options from various vendors as part of the taste fest and listen to live music from dozens of local musicians.
“Personally, I like just the interaction between people. We get just an array of people,” said kindergarten teacher Maggie VanRooyan. “So it’s fun to just see people, and I think that most people are just enjoying themselves and enjoying the artists and the food and the beautiful weather.”
While the festival had an abundance of entertainment opportunities for attendees, it also served as a lucrative event for the artists that set up a booth during the weekend.
The Omaha Summer Arts Festival and others like it have provided an opportunity for vendors to connect with customers and showcase their work to a large audience.
“This is the vast majority of my business. I make almost my entire income from arts festivals. It’s a really great way to connect directly with customers as opposed to trying to connect with them online,” said Trevor Graybill, an artist from Michigan.
In addition to providing a space for artists to set up shop, the Omaha Summer Arts Festival worked to encourage local talent through its Homegrown Artists’ Village, which provided a space for up-andcoming artists who otherwise might not have had the resources to do the full three-day event.
Not only did the festival help attract local artists, but many artists traveled to the area for the event such as traveling artist Jodi Burton who returned for a second year.
“I had such a fun time in Omaha last year that I wanted to come back and explore. We actually put an extra day into our travels so we could walk around and check out Omaha too,” Burton said.
Although the weekend marked the close of the festival after half a century of being an Omaha tradition, many agreed that the event certainly ended on a high note.
“It’s been an Omaha tradition for 50 years so it’s just heartbreaking that it’s ending, but I’m glad that it’s ending kind of with a bang after 50 years,” VanRooyan said. “So, it’s unfortunate, but also let’s celebrate the last 50 years.”
Q&A with Art Patrons
What’s been your favorite part of the festival?
“We come every year. And so, being that this is the last year, you know we could not miss it. But, the music – we love the music – we’ve been turned on to a lot of different bands. So, that’s really nice. But we also just love the art that the artists put out,” said Barb Blohn.
“We’re art people, so we’ve been coming here for forever,” said Salvo Blohn.
“Seeing all the art from all the other states come in and seeing what they bring to the festival,” said Rachel Slavik.
“Seeing all the arts and seeing different styles of art that people do,” said Zoey Annin.
“Just coming out to explore something different,” said Melissa Annin.

The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal:
1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document to the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information
2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment options are cash or check.
3. Deadline is noon on Tuesday for a notice to start publishing that Friday.
4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts.
