WHO’S WHO IN LOCAL BUSINESSES

DIRECTOR OF SKILL DEVELOPMENT, QLI

Jill Guenther

HOMETOWN: HOMEWOOD, ILLINOIS

Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier. - MOTHER TERESA What’s your Personal Motto? Do unto others as THEY would want you to do. What was your first job? Hostess at Baker’s Square (it was similar to a Village Inn). Biggest career break: In 2018 when Patricia Kearns, our president and CEO, approached me and asked if I would create a new version of how we bring people into our company and teach our mission and our culture. A Mentor who has helped the most in my career is: Over the last few years, my direct supervisor, Alicia Elson, and my office mate, Michelle Moragues, have pushed me to think differently and outside of my comfort zone. We have an amazing chemistry where we know we have each other’s back but are not afraid to challenge each other. Which famous person, dead or alive, would you want to spend the day with? Without a doubt it would be Jesus Christ. I would want to learn everything I could from Him in terms of forgiveness, compassion, and love. What career advice would you give to your younger self? I would have encouraged more reading and networking with other professionals. How do you create a work-life balance? Work and life are not separate, both are simply a part of my life. QLI has an amazing environment where I can talk about my passions and family openly with my team members and even our residents so I feel like they really know

my “outside of work” life. I also share with my husband, daughter, and parents a lot of what is happening with work (without breaking HIPAA), so they have a deeper understanding of what I accomplish and find value in terms of my work. Being in a 24-hour-a-day, 7-days-aweek health care facility, we all have opportunities to work directly with our residents 7-days-a-week. I love staying connected in this way, and want to help our company, so I pick up shifts on the weekend and evenings. I also want to spend quality time with my family. I always ask my husband the week before what nights and weekend times work well for us so that he and I still have our time together (we are newlyweds). This helps me feel I can give 100% when I am here and 100% when I am home.

balloon fight where Bob and I were the targets. It really brought the teams together for friendly competition. What do you feel passionate about beyond your work? I am passionate about building relationships, learning the Bible, cherishing my family and friends. What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? Absolutely with my husband and/ or daughter. It doesn’t matter what we do because I simply love being with them. Bill and I love going to live events of any kind — sports, theatre, music. Grace and I love playing strategic games together or taking long walks or hikes.

What do you find appealing about your job? So many things, but mostly the ability to build relationships that are deep and meaningful. I also work with people I truly adore. Looking ahead, what are the greatest challenges you face? At QLI, we are trying to be creative in how we teach soft skills to our new team members. We need the training to be contextual, the content to be engaging and, most importantly, a way to put what is learned into action. What have been some of the most memorable/unusual projects you’ve been involved in? One of my favorite memories at QLI is when our residential house teams had a competition. I was the campus leader for one side of campus and my dear friend Bob Davis was the campus leader for the other. We came up with challenges that ranged from physical events to trivia. It ended with a

What career accomplishments are you the most proud of? Winning QLI’s James P. O’Donnell Demonstrated Excellence Award is still my biggest accomplishment. What are you currently working on? Collaborating with other leaders in the company to gain different perspectives and grow the skill development department stronger than I could on my own. What are your most ambitious goals for the future? To own a second home in either Texas or Arizona and to retire by age 63. Favorite cause or charity and why? Anything that deals with ending world hunger — especially for children. It is more widespread than I can even imagine and everyone can be a part of the change.

FARMERS MARKET

MIDLANDS BUSINESS JOURNAL

COVER story

BY DWAIN HEBDA

A SUMMERTIME TRADITION, FARMERS MARKETS ARE BLOOMING ONCE AGAIN, BRINGING PRODUCE, FLOWERS AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT TO LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE METRO.

Vital to the Community

FARMERS MARKETS BENEFIT BEYOND FRESH PRODUCE

It just wouldn’t be summertime in the Midlands without farmers markets and its rows of local growers stocking makeshift booths or the tailgates of pickups with brightly colored garden treasures. From the familiar tomatoes, sweet corn and flowers to jams, meat, baked goods and crafts, you never know what you might find, or who you’ll meet, as you stroll through the area’s markets. Farmers markets are not only a family tradition for many but have also become a vital source for healthy food for communities from one end of the country to the other. And even though many markets were curtailed during 2020 out of COVID-19 health concerns, they’ve since emerged and have remained an important supplement to grocery stores and big box retailers, to say nothing of a tourist draw and a centerpiece of the live, work, play environment. According to The Conversation.com, there are roughly 9,000 farmers markets in the United States, and many experienced their strongest sales ever as a result of rising food insecurity and grocery shelves remaining bare during the pandemic. Markets’ fresh fruits and vegetables also play a vital role in supplementing the diets of low-income families, who often live in urban food deserts. As the Farmers Market Coalition notes, 2020 market purchases using SNAP benefits increased 40% compared to 2019 receipts.

Hollow Farm and Homebound Coffee.” Now in its 12th season, Council Bluffs’ market has grown to 76 season-long and drop-in vendors displaying their wares every Thursday evening from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. starting in May and running through the last Thursday in September. The market is located in Bayliss Park at 532 1st Ave. “New this season is weekly free yoga,” Garst said. “We’ve also added additional family tables with bright umbrellas in the

Market managers like Sheryl Garst, CEO of Council Bluffs Farmers Market, are upbeat about participation numbers and the atmosphere, augmented with different types of programming. “Farmers Market Council Bluffs is not just a farmers market, but a wonderful community event with live music, prepared food, and free kids’ activities,” she said. “The beauty of our market is it slows down time in a wonderful, national award-winning public space. It’s truly a Mayberry feel in the backyard of Omaha. “Our base is produce and baked goods, of course with gluten-free, vegan and protein options trending. It’s been nice to see more craft vendors for specialty baby items, soaps, candles, woodcrafters and jewelry. The majority our vendors are Iowa-based such as Hidden

center of our market. That’s such a simple item, but the public is really enjoying them as it encourages lingering and friendly camaraderie.” The Bellevue Nebraska Farmers Market operates on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon through mid-September in Washington Park at 20th and Franklin streets. It is enjoying heavy traffic thus far in 2022, as people flock to grab produce, grass-fed beef, farm-fresh eggs, honey, maple syrup, salt-free spices, ethnic food items, coffee, baked goods and pies, healthy dog treats and many more crafts and prepared food items. Carol Blood, marketing manager, said the 10-year-old market has flourished the past six years under volunteer management, which stayed in touch with consumer and vendor needs. Blood noted that it can be hard to compete with larger markets, but the Bellevue market is holding its own. “We are still one of the top five markets in Nebraska,” she said. “To be frank, there is one volunteer who does everything, including social media. All of our vendor fees go into marketing.” Blood said nowhere did the leadership and foresight of the volunteers shine brighter than during the height of COVID-19. “Our market was open during the pandemic,” she said. “We handed out free masks, asked people to maintain appropriate distance, had special hours for pregnant moms, seniors and those with health issues. “We also provide hand sanitation locations throughout the market. Our attendance was as good as it was prior and after the pandemic. This year, we have had exceptional traffic. People like our environment as it is very family- and dog-friendly. There is a playground, picnic shelters, a gazebo and it’s accessible for people with disabilities. Parking is also free.”

Farm Fresh

Industry watchers say there are benefits to farmers markets that go beyond access and entertainment. “Supporting your local farmers strengthens your community and local economy. Farmers who sell direct to consumers receive 80 cents of each food dollar,” wrote Tara Dunker, educator with University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources Food. “Farmers markets also offer foods that align with a healthy eating pattern […] Freshly picked, in-season produce is at peak flavor and nutrition.” It doesn’t get any fresher than Wenninghoff Farms’ market. Located onsite at the third-generation family farmstead at 6707 Wenninghoff Rd., visitors buy their produce just a few yards from where it was grown. “This is our 66th year of the on-the-farm market and we only sell here,” said Amy Wenninghoff, co-owner. “We’ve never missed a year since 1956. Through the pandemic, we were very busy as more and more people wanted to cook at home. Our bedding plant sales also saw steady growth this spring as people are turning back to gardening.” The market is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. KOMBUCHA WITH A CAUSE

“We grow most of the produce here at the farm, but we also stock items from other local vendors, including It’s All About Bees, Erick’s Enchiladas, Norm’s pork rinds, Jisa cheese, E-Creamery ice cream and cookies, Fontanelle Orchard cider and many more. “We are expanding our kid zone area with activities and animals for the kids. We also will have a sample day on Saturday, July 23, with our fresh-cooked sweet corn and lots of salsa, jellies and other items.” Depending on time of year, there are also added attractions, Wenninghoff said. We also open on Small Business Weekend after Thanksgiving and offer Christmas gift baskets with all our jar items like jams, sauerkraut, pickles and our famous corn nuts.”

Overcoming Challenges

As popular as farmers markets have been, putting them on has not been without challenges. For vendors, the cost of fuel, fertilizer and pesticide, not to mention packaging, transportation and labor, have all gone up substantially. Maggie Winton, marketing coordinator for Omaha Farmers Market, said even as the Old Market and Aksarben Village markets

return to their pre-pandemic locations, farmers are unquestionably more strained. “It’s no secret that COVID really affected local businesses, and our market is no exception,” she said. “Our vendors are all local farmers, growers, producers and artists, and they were all hit hard by the pandemic and related economic trends. “A specific challenge we’ve seen recently is that our vendors have found it difficult to find the staff to help them. We’ve even had a number of vendors who have had to cut down on the number of markets they attend simply because they don’t have the staffing to help them.”

Winton said the response from the public, which has been consistently good over the past two years at the market’s temporary location, has been exceptional thus far in 2022. The Old Market location operates Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Aksarben Village is open Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., May through mid-October. “Attendance has been very good so far this year,” she said. “Our opening weekend, we had many vendors sell out of their product, and each weekend since then has been more of the same. Even with the warm weather, people still come out every weekend to support local farmers and producers, which is an amazing thing to witness.” Page 12 • July 8, 2022

Best Is Yet To Come

Angelyn Wang, manager of the Village Pointe Farmers Market, also reported strong foot traffic, even though the season started slowly. Located at 17305 Davenport St. in the Village Pointe Shopping Mall, the market is open every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through Oct. 1. “We have had a delayed start to the produce season and overall foot traffic was slow to begin,” she said. “Farmers around the area are being challenged with a crop shortage to a certain extent, due to the weather conditions before and during harvest season. “But over the last few weeks, we have noticed an increase in foot traffic, more crowds of people and lines forming at our vendors. These are all great signs as we delve into the summer produce season.” Village Pointe’s market, which is in its 17th year, enjoyed increased traffic last summer. This uptick in 2021 numbers has

Wang optimistic for a brisk season this year. “We are a true farmers market, so we prioritize farmers, even though we do feature nontraditional vendors such as local crafters, specialty food preparers and other non-farmer vendors every first Saturday,” she said. “We saw attendance last year increase from 2020 and we saw many new customers, especially young families, shop at our market.” In addition to the usual collection of fruits and vegetables, Wang said Village Pointe has also incorporated more event marketing to attract shoppers, such as featuring live music from local performers every week. Market management has also continued to implement extra spacing to help soothe any vendor or patron jitters over health and safety. “Our market booths are spaced out so that our vendors and customers have plenty of room to shop and feel comfortable in a crowd,” she said. RIGHT AT HOME

HEALTH care MARGARET HAYNES, PRESIDENT AND CEO, RIGHT AT HOME

Home Sweet Home

RIGHT AT HOME GAINS FAMILIAR FACE AS CEO Margaret Haynes has only been president and CEO of Omahabased home health care company Right at Home for short while, but you’d never know by talking to her. The longtime executive articulates the challenges and opportunities facing her industry with the easy delivery of someone who’s been there and done that. Which, when it comes to health care, she has in ways both personal and professional. She cut her teeth in the industry over the past 12 years with the company, first as senior vice president of support services and, since 2014, as chief operating officer. But the real foundation for her new role at the helm was poured much earlier, in a way much more personal.

Mission Driven “I grew up in a family split between health care and business backgrounds,” she said. “My mom and two of my sisters are all in the medical field. My mom worked for 40 years as a visiting nurse. I watched her working on the home health side of things.” Seeing her mother embrace the vocation of nursing in home settings made a distinct impression on Haynes. Even though she confessed

joining Right at Home knowing nothing about the finer points of the industry, she already knew what kind of care she wanted the company to provide, a vision that forms her leadership platform today. “I don’t know that there is a more complex industry out there, but it has some guiding truths that keep us moving in the right direction,” she said. “One of those is our mission; we live, drink, breathe what our mission statement is — to improve the quality of life for those that we serve. When we say that, we mean a lot of things. “First and foremost, for the clients in communities where we have a presence — your mom, my mom, families going through this thing called aging — how can we make it as beautiful and graceful and as supported as possible? We use that as our guiding principle.” “Margaret approaches everything from both the large and small perspective, which is testament of her incredibly strong sense of awareness,” said Jen Chaney, Right at Home vice president of development. “She looks at the bigger picture first, then breaks situations down into the finer details to see what’s really going on underneath. It’s imperative to take that approach when big decisions are being made, and she’s so great at it.”

“I don’t know that there is a more complex industry out there, but it has some guiding truths that keep us moving in the right direction. - MARGARET HAYNES, PRESIDENT AND CEO, RIGHT AT HOME

Supporting Role

Future Challenges

Haynes said another primary focus of the company is how it tends to the needs of its franchisees. Right at Home supports 515 franchise market territories across the U.S., employing about 25,000, and another 170 offices operating in seven countries. And while the specific needs of each franchisee will vary to some degree, all are treated according to the same overriding philosophy. “From Right at Home’s perspective, we are not successful as a brand and as a corporate office if our franchisees are not successful. We don’t make money if they’re not making money,” Haynes said. “That alignment, I think, is beautiful because that keeps us focused on how we can help these owners in their local markets. What are the tools and resources and coaching and guidance that we can provide, leveraging the strengths that they as individuals bring to the table? “Then, how can we wrap additional support around them that allows them to be a successful owner? A lot of our owners aren’t coming from a background of having owned this company and that company. They may be coming from a situation where they were in corporate America and then maybe went through a layoff or whatnot and they have a heart and a passion for this thing called senior care, wanting to help people age gracefully.” “Here’s the thing about Margaret, she has the biggest heart, she’s the kindest, most compassionate person,” said Kristi Benning, who’s known Haynes since high school, worked with her at Right at Home and now owns the Omaha franchise. “Margaret is very solutions-oriented. She cares very much about the individual franchisee. We’re not just a number to her. She’s always been a huge champion of mine and has always been absolutely the most supportive. I think I can probably speak for a lot of franchisees when I say that.”

Haynes takes over at a time when health care overall is undergoing major challenges on all sides, from the tsunami of aging baby boomers to the battle to attract talent to the lingering specter of COVID-19 itself. She said the company must be both innovative and responsive in order to continue moving forward in such a business environment. “[Right at Home] just completed a study and are just starting to get the readouts of those results where we’re trying to understand the changing consumer preferences,” Haynes said. “We recognize the challenges of going from the traditionalists to the boomer consumer, who is obviously very experiential. We love to go to the theater. We love to go on our vacations. We’re a wealthy generation and we like to spend money. As a service provider, we have to understand how to enhance experiences while still following a care plan that meets a particular individual’s needs. “The other thing that’s changing is technology. The traditionalist generation wasn’t as tech-savvy. We tried a couple of different technology pilots over the years and they had lackluster results. But today, the patient’s family wants that monitoring technology, not to mention from an economics perspective and the ongoing care shortage where we’ve got all these boomers aging without an equal population to support them. “So, technology is going to have to play a role, the question is how can we do that in a way that’s not intrusive, but supportive.” A graduate of Papillion-LaVista High School, Haynes received degrees in business and accounting from Northwest Missouri State and an MBA in personnel and human resource management from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She joined Right at Home in 2011 after 18 years with First Data Corporation in Omaha.

Rocking His Role

CHRISTOPHER GORMAN TAKES UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE AT HURRDAT

CHRISTOPHER GORMAN, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, HURRDAT MEDIA

These days, Christopher Gorman’s job could almost literally bring him anything his ample imagination can conjure up. As senior vice president for Hurrdat Media, his inbox could contain a movie script for review, the next podcasting sensation and an other-worldly idea for a pop-up event during football season. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s all in a day’s work for the starry-eyed kid from western Nebraska. And it all began with a desire to make North Platte and Kearney cool when Gorman started booking bands into local venues in high school and college, respectively.

Rock ‘N’ Roll “Any success in problem-solving I have all started when we started throwing those shows in North Platte and Kearney,” he said. “Just by the nature of the business, you’re surrounded by people who have to solve problems in very creative and cheap ways. Just being around these people, I owe a lot of my success to them. “Drinking from a firehose teaches you a lot about how to solve what you need to solve when there isn’t time. You have to make quick decisions. You hope they’re right.” Gorman’s experience with bands during high school and college made him enough connections to land as tour manager for three New York-based rock bands. Among his tasks was social media manager before there was a name for it. “This was 2005, well before Instagram was around,” he said. “Hurricane Katrina hit the south, so gas prices were astronomical. We really had to be savvy on Myspace to make sure kids would come out to the shows and still be able to put food in the van and put gas in our vehicles to make it to the next city. “This was before smartphones. We either had to find some computer lab at a college or some parent who’d let us upload photos and write blog posts because it’s not like you could do everything from your iPhone or you could tether your laptop. Everything was a lot harder back then.”

The Ultimate Creative After finishing the tour manager experience, Gorman settled into a “regular” job for a period. When that ended, he started looking around and discovered Hurrdat, a marketing firm known for no-holds-barred creativity and unique projects. “With Hurrdat, there wasn’t anything that was off the table. There were no bad ideas,” he said. “There was room to create and I was surrounded by the most creative people that I had ever met. If you just started a couple weeks ago, your ideas will still be heard and they’ll be considered. I thought that was really special.” Today, Hurrdat Media includes its entertainment division, film production and Hail Varsity magazine, covering Cornhusker athletics, all of which falls under Gorman’s supervision. Most recently the company opened its own sports bar, Hail Varsity Club, in Omaha. It seems haphazard, but there’s a deft touch that ties everything together. “Especially as we’ve grown, we have to be very intentional about the projects we pursue,” he said. “Projects have to make sense on a bunch of different levels and one of those is definitely financial. One of the challenges sometimes is making the tough calls of who we’re going to make that investment in and what projects deserve to have our time and money involved. “On the other hand, as we continue to grow, one of the advantages is we work on really cool things, things a lot of people dream about, like opening a bar, making a movie and doing podcasts with huge talent. Things happen very quickly, and we need to be ready for those things.” PRESENTING SPONSOR
